anecdotal stories

Genesis 39:10, As she spoke to Joseph day after day, he did not listen to her to lie beside her or be with her.

Genesis 40:6-7, When Joseph came to them in the morning and observed them, behold, they were dejected. He asked Pharaoh’s officials who were with him in confinement in his master’s house, “Why are your faces so sad today?”

Acts 12:6-7, On the very night when Herod was about to bring him forward, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and guards in front of the door were watching over the prison. And behold, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared and a light shone in the cell; and he struck Peter’s side and woke him up, saying, “Get up quickly.” And his chains fell off his hands.

It’s Natural After a While

The people of Thailand break wild elephants to domestic use by chaining them to banyan trees. The pain the elephants experience by pulling against the restraint gradually breaks their will to resist. When an elephant finally refuses to lift its massive leg in an effort to free itself, the workers release it from the tree and secure it to a circus stake. The beast could pull the stake from the ground like a toothpick, but it remembers the pain and isn’t smart enough to realize that circumstances have changed.

Although Christians are freed from Satan’s power, we sometimes act as if we are still imprisoned by it. He lies, telling us we cannot escape. But we are not elephants; we are intelligent enough to see the shackles laid aside, to feel the freedom Christ brings us. He has entered our dungeon and set us free! Why continue to be chained to a spiritual stake when Jesus has freed us to soar?

Christ Will Rule – A.W. Tozer

Aiden Wilson Tozer (April 21, 1897 – May 12, 1963) was an American Christian pastor, author, magazine editor, and spiritual mentor. Self-taught theologian. Fearless preacher. Gifted writer. Man of the inner life. A.W. Tozer, called by many a “modern-day prophet.” Observing contemporary Christian living, Tozer felt the church was on a dangerous course toward compromising with “worldly” concerns. He was a man who was obsessed with the glory and the holiness of God and making it known to others.

I am not surprised that I still meet people who do not believe that Jesus Christ is going to return to earth. In fact, some of them, armed with their own Bibles and interpretations, are insistent on setting me “straight.” One gentleman has written saying that I have it all wrong, and that Paul did not mean what I had said he meant, as I applied Paul’s statement to everyday life. I took time to write a reply: “When it comes to saying what he meant, Paul’s batting average has been pretty good up to now. So, I will string along with what Paul plainly, clearly said.”

I did not figure I needed someone to straighten me out-particularly someone who had decided the Bible does not mean what it says. No one is going to argue me out of my faith in what God has revealed and what God has said. As far as I am concerned, it is a fact that Jesus is coming again! The question I do raise is this: Are we prepared spiritually for His coming? Are we tolerating conditions in our midst that will cause us embarrassment when He does come?

Prayer of Intercession

*Pastor’s Note: This is adapted for today from a prayer found on the internet a long time ago as an example of intercessory prayer.

Heavenly Father, God Who is Almighty,

It saddens our hearts to see the great suffering of Your beloved children in the world. We bring to mind all those locally, family, friends and neighbors who find themselves in a hard place. We especially pray for those who suffer physically with illness or mentally with depression or anxiety. There are so many today that are filled with such hopelessness and suicidal thoughts.

Lord, come into the hearts and shine Your light on all these with Your Holy Spirit and bring great love, hope and joy through us Your church, the Body of Christ. Help us to minister as You have gifted each of us and help us to serve others in the strength of Your Spirit and to work in unity together and in the bonds of peace. May we shine Your light and glory into the darkness and remain steadfast and true to You.

Lord, it disturbs us when we see world leaders embracing division instead of unity, pursuing wealth instead of justice and concealing lies instead of speaking out the truth. We lift all those in significant leadership to You. Though we may not agree or condone all their actions and words, Lord guide their thoughts, cover their actions and renew their minds. Protect them from the influence of the realms of darkness and sweep away any corruption. Cause them to realize You are the only hope for the nations.

hope of the nations

We pray that You would lay out new paths of righteousness in troubled nations and lands. Lord, Your Word says that You raise kings and depose kings. You alone are sovereign throughout the world.

Father, it is also disturbing to see the difference between rich and poor ever widening. We lift all those in poverty, in ALL nations, to You. Come bring miracles of provision, healing and restoration. Speak into our personal lives so that we might play our part in changing the world and showing forth Your glory and unfailing love.

We ask all these things in the wonderful name of Jesus Christ, Your Son and our Lord. Amen and AMEN!

Jude Verses 5-7

Jude 1:5-7, “But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day; as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.”

In the previous verses Jude explains what kind of person and leaders turn into apostates. Apostasy, the turning AWAY from the truth back into the darkness willingly is a serious circumstance that has eternal consequences. This is the reason Jude is writing this letter, this Epistle to the church body at the time and why the Holy Spirit inspired him for all posterity. The ongoing church, even up until today needs to be vigilant and take heed.

apostasy of churchNow I am not going to go in depth in the circumstance of apostasy at this time. I am going to let Jude speak his mind as written under inspiration of the Holy Spirit and am not going to delve into what men following him through the ages have done with the concept of apostasy. Right now, we will avoid the controversies and let the Bible stand upon its authority!

Jude goes on from the previous verses to explain three distinct examples of what he is talking about. He uses these examples to confirm the eternal significance of falling away, once walking in the truth.

There is absolutely no question as to God’s attitude towards the sinful nature of apostates. The first example is based upon the children of Israel in the wilderness after their escape and salvation from the Egyptians. We see the Apostle Paul write in 1 Corinthians 10:11, “Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.” So these things were recorded as examples that we are to regard until Christ Himself returns!

You can see the full story in Numbers chapter 13 and 14, but it involved a rejection of God’s promises concerning the land of Canaan, in which God told the children He would go before them and give them the land. Rather than the Lord’s Word, they chose to believe what the Word describes as an evil report, by the spies of Kadesh concerning the inhabitants of the land and the children of Israel rebelled.

Now think of this. These men and women had just been witness to some of the greatest miracles wrought by the hand of God in their escape from Egypt! They had seen the waters of the Red Sea part and allow them passage on dry land only to witness the waters envelope the chasing Egyptians. Yet when God tells them that He will go before them into the land He promises to give them, they believe the testimony of the cowardly spies of Kadesh! As a result of this all those who were twenty and older when they left Egypt perished in that very wilderness without being witness to God’s promise EXCEPT the faithful warriors, Caleb and Joshua! These people in their rebellion, after witnessing the strength, might AND promises of God Himself perished without ever seeing the promise fulfilled. They were truly saved from Egypt, but yet rejected God’s promise of a new home!

fallen angelsThe second example that Jude gives is of the angels that rebelled. Now in truth there are at least a couple of instances of this and I don’t want to get into the controversies of what is being implied other than to point out that God did NOT condone the rebellion that went on in Heaven.

Jude tells us there were angels that “left their own abode” and they “did not keep their proper domain.” Because of their actions being so immoral and horrific to the Father, He has reserved them, restrained them “in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day.”

These angels are the ones thought to be in reference to the angels of Genesis 6:1-7, though they were identified in the Word as angels, but rather as “the sons of God.” They are assumed to be the angels that Jude describes for they left their heavenly abode and came down to mate with human women which was an abomination to God. Where the thought that these “sons of God” were angels actually comes from the Semitic language as found in Job 1:6 and 2:1.

Now understand, these are not the fallen angels, the demons that are left unbound to roam freely, tempting man. Whatever the historical incident that lies behind verse 6 does not belie the point that these angels left their assigned posts and heavenly home to do what God found horrific in rebellion and thus He chained them in darkness awaiting their final judgment. Even the very angels do not escape from the sin of apostasy and what makes it even more chilling is that they were in the presence of the Almighty and KNEW first hand His glory and yet turned their backs on it!

The third apostasy that Jude uses as an example is what happened to Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities. So often we believe that it was JUST Sodom and Gomorrah, yet the immorality was so widespread that it infected the cities around Sodom and Gomorrah as well. This example can be located in Genesis 18:16-19:29.

sodom and gomorrah

Now notice how Jude starts the 7th verse with the Word in the NKJV, as. In the New American Standard Bible the word is translated just. This is tying what he is writing about to verse 6 and the plight of the angels. In fact he goes on to say plainly that these people had “given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh” and he mirrors the Apostle Paul’s comment from 1 Corinthians 10 that they are “set forth as an example.” It was gross immorality that was utterly against God’s nature and thus absolutely abhorrent to Him!

The Apostle Paul goes in depth into the specific sin of perversion in Romans 1:26-27. The people, especially the men of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, as the Bible goes into detail were particularly addicted to homosexuality.

I will most definitely not be very popular by saying this but it seems that many of our modern day apostates are in the forefront of those who publicly defend this lifestyle and don’t just want it legalized but they DEMAND that it be accepted by the churches and other religious institutions or face the verbal charge of being hateful and divisive, harsh and unloving!

You would think that the historical example of Sodom and Gomorrah and the other cities would be enough to recognize the nature and character of an Almighty God. These cities, the angels that rebelled and the children of Israel that perished in the wilderness due to rebellion are all examples of what is in store for the eternal future of those who reject but especially those who have seen and walked in the light and turned their backs on it; and that is what Jude went on to write, “suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.”

The fire and brimstone that Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim experienced was a natural fire sent from above to destroy them cities as an example to generations that would follow, but the eternal fire that Jude is describing, is a death that will last for eternity. Separation from God’s Light AND Love forever and ever. What an eternal tragedy.

Apostasy is spoken of in the Bible by several writers, not to put fear into the saints, but to remind us that we constantly NEED the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit to walk in the spirit and to lead a holy life. We CAN’T do it on our own, no matter how well-meaning we are. We are given these warnings so that we may remain vigilant and that we may continue to keep our eyes on our TRUE salvation, God, our Heavenly Father through Jesus Christ, our Lord and our King of Kings!

The Transformed Life

Those in the world today believe that the practice of religion can make them worthy of God Almighty. Yet the Word tells us that only Jesus Christ through His Holy Spirit can give us the ability to truly “walk in the Spirit!”

Prayer of Faith

Dear Heavenly Father, be glorified and exalted in us, Your children. You are worthy to be exalted for Your majesty is from everlasting to everlasting and we cannot praise You enough! Let us be a mirror, a reflection of Your glory so that the world may see only You! Let Your light shine in brilliance through us, Your servants, Your children.

Father, let the world see and experience Your Kingdom through us. Allow us to show the world the Kingdom of Heaven as it is meant to be and as it WILL be. Lord, we truly pray that we will be invisible and that You will be magnified through our lives. Let us truly decrease as You alone increase.

O Lord, if we have transgressed against our Brothers or Sisters, forgive us we plead. Forgive us for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ. If we have transgressed or sinned against our neighbors, we ask the same. Lord help us to forgive our Brothers and Sisters if they have transgressed against us and don’t hold those things against them that we might be free in You. Forgive our neighbors and even our enemies from their transgressions and sins against us that we might remain free in You.

Lord, we thank You exceedingly and in fact we can’t thank You enough for the many blessings, both natural and spiritual that You give to us so graciously. Help us to be ever conscious of the fact that You ARE our source of need and comfort. We are blessed with the assurance that You are the source of that comfort and peace and our strength comes from the joy that You have in each of us individually. Help us daily to not misplace that assurance.

O Lord, we truly look to You each and every day, every minute of those days to continue to be our Rock and our Shield in the face of what is going on in the world. Again, help us to portray Your light in a world that is quickly embracing the darkness. Let Your light so shine through us and help us to continue to fervently and effectually pray for the lost that they might escape an eternity of darkness. Let Your unfailing love work through us for the sake of the lost, those that are our neighbors around us and those of our loved ones trying to live a life without you, for the sake of Your Son, our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ.

Amen and AMEN!

Esteem — Yourself?

*Pastor’s Note: This is one of the articles I wrote and posted for my very first website in the mid 90s soon after I got my first computer. I know, I was a slow up and comer! I thought it might interest my readers to read some of my first posted writings. I HAVE updated some of the Scripture references, but all in all, it is pretty much as I posted them on my very first website. The pictures were added for this posting, though.

One of the most popular teachings that has cropped up within the church over the last several years has been the teaching on self love, or, the importance of esteeming one’s self in today’s hectic world. The theory behind this is that we need to learn to love ourselves before we can ever begin to love God. This has caught on so much that some of our major religious organizations even hold seminars on the subject for Pastors, teachers and other church workers and leaders so that they can be more attuned and “correct” in their teaching when those teachings start to touch on the subject of “love.” Self-esteem as taught even in our public, and yes, Christian schools today among our children bolsters this notion and conditions them for the future.

But let’s look at what the Bible tells us in Philippians chapter 2 verse 3, “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.”

Now that’s just the opposite of this new (old) teaching. In actuality the Bible continually warns against thinking too highly of ourselves. Rather, we are to esteem OTHERS more highly than ourselves. This does not mean we are to be door mats under the feet of others, no far from it. But rather, we are simply to put others first. We are to allow others the better place at the table and the better seats at the ball game. We are not to have or indulge in a ‘Me First’ type attitude.

If you have a tendency to think too highly of yourself in the things you do and the way you live life, if you tend toward the selfish, then generally you have a tendency to neglect your responsibilities and especially in the area of how you relate to others and their needs.

A person with predominate selfish tendencies may think the work they have been assigned is beneath their dignity, whether it be ministry (as in service to others) or on their everyday secular job; and so the assigned tasks go either undone or way beneath acceptability.

What’s the result? You get bad reports. You are reprimanded by your peers and employers. You develop a bad reputation. You don’t get the raise you were wanting and especially the ones you expected. You start to feel bad, but only to the degree that others don’t understand you. You believe you are picked on which further boosts your thoughts of superiority over others.

Now let me clarify something that is often so very much misunderstood. Most people think that “hate” in and of itself is the opposite of love, but hate actually derives from another characteristic; it comes from SELFISHNESS, and selfishness is actually the opposite of REAL love. Real, agape, Godly, love, is unselfish. Real love is what carries this thought, this characteristic of esteeming others above ourselves. The Lord truly knows the nature of man.

self love

When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment in the Bible was and is, this is what is recorded in Matthew 22:37-40, “Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ “This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ “On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

Now understand something in what our Lord spoke in this paragraph; Jesus isn’t condoning loving yourself as a character trait to develop, rather He is telling us that our love for those around us should be as the love we already give ourselves! Because He knows the nature of man and that the nature of man will not change without spiritual help and guidance, He can state the command like He did.

So, if we choose to see the needs of others as MORE important than our own, we are more likely to work hard to accomplish those things we know we must do for the benefit of others. Then, when our work is completed, and only then can we feel “good” about the job that we have accomplished; not however in a prideful way, but in the sense that we HAVE accomplished something worthwhile for someone else without thought of any further gain on our part!

I challenge you, if you haven’t walked in the attribute that I have just laid before you for some time, then try it; I guarantee you’ll see what I mean and you will develop a totally different perspective toward everyone around you!

“But Jesus looked at them and said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.” – Mark 10:27.

Thank You and God Bless You Richly!

Pastor Roland

A Silent God

When you’re going through some trials

The burdens are hard to bear

You call out to God

But it seems He isn’t there.

In the presence of a silent God

There’s nothing you can do

But put your faith in Jesus

And know He’ll see you through.

If He answered plain and clear

Every time you called His name

You’d never soar to heights unknown

Your faith would stay the same.

We know that it’s the wings of faith

That carry us above

The lonely, hurting trials of life

To God’s perfect peace and love.

a silent God

Saints, Be Encouraged!

Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”

It is so easy to be discouraged and even perplexed when we look around us in this day and age. What was prophesied long ago in the Word of God is unfolding right before our eyes and many of us didn’t think we would live to see such BLATANT corruption and outright wickedness. But God’s Word is always true as promised.

We need to remember though that these things HAVE to take place according to prophecy for God’s end-time plans to be fulfilled. Remember, He warned His children out of love and compassion for them and with longsuffering is thinking about the lost. We don’t need to agree or like what is going on around us for sin is abhorrent to God and thus it should be to followers of Christ Jesus as well. BUT, we need to understand though our Lord hates the actions of sin, He still loves His creation and as the Word reminds us, “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” – 2 Peter 3:9.

Yes, I have been quoting this a lot lately, but we need to be reminded over and over again that if the Lord loves like this, even for the lost, shouldn’t we, as TRUE followers of Christ be the same way. The greatest act of love we can show to the lost is to fervently and earnestly pray for their salvation. Yes, we know that many, many will choose to take that broad path leading to destruction, the easy route, but each and every soul won to the Kingdom of God is precious beyond gold or silver!

Don’t forget that the Father has promised with these words:

“For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: “The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” – Hebrews 13:5b-6.

Yes, we are going to continue to see corruption and wickedness around us, but remember, we are in this world, but we are not OF it (John 17:11-16) and that should give us a great amount of peace and comfort. So pray for those around you, your Brothers and Sisters in Christ, but the lost and fallen as well. Demonstrate your love for the Lord and others by interceding for the lost.

Do not be dismayed or perplexed, but stay vigilant for the signs are telling us that our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus is coming back very, very soon. So be encouraged as Luke reminds us in his Gospel:

“Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” – Luke 21:28.

So saints, my word to you today is be blessed, but be encouraged in the Lord. He is STILL sitting on His throne and STILL our Sovereign Lord and King!

Jude Verses 3-4

Jude 1:3-4, “Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ.”

After Jude’s salutation, he starts out straightforward and to the point not mincing words. He explains that his initial intention for writing was to reiterate the doctrine of salvation and yet found that it was more important to remind all believers our responsibility to “contend earnestly for the faith” and to remember that it was delivered ONCE for all time and not just once UPON a time!

During the time of his writing, attacks were already being made on the gospel and the doctrines of salvation and of Jesus Christ’s deity were being perverted. The body of doctrinal truth is complete in the Word of God, and the canon of our faith is complete. It’s been said, “if it’s new it’s not true, and if it’s true it’s not new.”

Today we live in a society where every so-called leader is presenting the church with a “new” revelation which is not necessarily found in the Word of God. When you hear something like that being presented, I’m sorry, but contending for the faith demands that it is rejected right off the bat. In truth, the Faith has been delivered to mankind and we do not need nor dare we heed anything other than what is found in the Word of God. Too many leaders of false cults are trying to convince the church that their books and writings are on equal with the given Scriptures. It just isn’t so.

contending for the faith

Speaking of “contending earnestly for the faith,” I would like to point out that it is our responsibility as Christians to do so WITHOUT being contentions or argumentative. This is one of the very reason why myself and even some of my peers do NOT like to debate. It is not because we are fearful of not knowing the Word, but rather the Bible’s authority does not have to be defended. It IS the Word of God, no ands, ifs or buts about it.

The Apostle Paul wrote this to his protégé Timothy:

“But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife. And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.” – 2 Timothy 2:23-26. This is the Christian formula for contending without being contentious.

Jude then goes directly into the nature of the threat, pointing out in no uncertain terms what to look out for and why we need to be vigilant. Certain men had crept into the church unnoticed. The Holy Bible, New Living Translation says they “wormed” their way in. It was back then and is especially today, done with stealth and deceit. It is intentional and planned and it is done by those with loose morals, truly ungodly men who resort to lewdness and at the same time deny the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ and the ONLY Lord God. These men speak “religious” things and they use the Holy Word of God for their own desires, twisting and perverting its truths to make it say what they want it to say, rather than allowing it to change them.

The Word states, “who long ago were marked out for this condemnation.” Do not misinterpret the meaning of this phrase. This is where a knowledge of the Bible and the Character and Nature of God Almighty is so very important. At first glance it would seem as if God has selected these people for damnation, which couldn’t be further from the truth. Remember, the Character of God is Omniscience. He KNOWS all things already, nothing takes Him by surprise, but that does not mean that He goes against a person’s ability to choose according to an individual’s free will. When men are finally lost, it is because of their free choice to sin and walk in disobedience rejecting God’s truth and gift of salvation. What this statement is showing is that the fate of those who reject God and apostates are condemned already because of their choices. They are not foreordained to be damned or to fall away, but their punishment is predetermined according to the choices they make.

Remember what the Apostle Peter wrote:

“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” – 2 Peter 3:9.

The Lord’s DESIRE, the cry of His heart, is that everyone that He has created would come to repentance as He does NOT want any to perish. But again, He will NOT go against an individuals freedom to choose their own destiny, no matter how much it pains Him! This should be a sobering fact to every true believer and cause us or motivate us to earnestly and fervently pray for the lost.

false teachers ungodly menNow if you notice in verse 4, there are two very prominent characteristics to these “ungodly” men. Number one is that they turn the grace of God Almighty into an avenue for lewdness, in other words, they engage in depraved conduct, and secondly their corrupt doctrine. They deny the One and Only Lord God and they deny the Lord Jesus Christ. In denying Christ, the deny His absolute right to rule, His death and resurrection and they deny absolutely every essential element of Who He is and of His work!

Just who are these people? The scary fact, even today, or especially today is that they ARE in positions of leadership within the Christian Church. They can be elders, bishops, teachers, preachers, or they can be church council members or seminary professors, but the one thing they all seem to have in common is an invented liberality to the “concept” of Christ which ultimately denies His glory, majesty, dominion and authority. They are like the Gnostics of old who believe that since the flesh is evil and it is already condemned, there is nothing you can do with the flesh, so let it have it’s way, while you concentrate on the spirit. They completely ignore AND deny the transforming power of the Holy Spirit of Christ.

Next post we will begin with Jude verse 5.

Prayer From Psalm 51

This is adapted from Psalm 51, a Psalm of David:

Dear Father in Heaven, purge me with cleansing hyssop and I shall be clean; wash me and I shall be whiter than snow in Your eyes.

Cause me dear Lord to hear joy and gladness; hide Your face from my sins and transgressions, and blot out my iniquities, casting them as far as the east is from the west.

Create within me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right and steadfast spirit within me.

create in me a clean heart

Father, do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take or remove Your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and hold me up by Your generous and merciful Spirit.

Then I will teach transgressors and sinners Your ways, and they shall be converted to You, by Your Grace and Mercy.

Lord, deliver me from my iniquities and guilt for You alone are the God of my salvation, and then my voice shall sing aloud Your righteousness and glory.

Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall sing forth Your praise.

I know O God that You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it. It is not burnt offerings you desire, but rather O God, the sacrifice You truly desire is a broken spirit, and a broken and contrite heart. These O Lord, You will NOT despise.

Wash me thoroughly from any iniquity and transgressions and cleanse me from my sin and have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness and the multitude of Your tender mercies.

Amen and AMEN!

Jude Introduction & Verses 1-2

Traditionally, Jude was/is recognized as the Brother of James who wrote the Epistle by the same name and the half-brother of Jesus, Himself. By his own admission, Jude was doubtful of Jesus’ deity until after the resurrection and he clung to the Apostles teachings who were his peers. Jude does not recognize himself or give himself the title of Apostle, nor does he bask in the fact that he is related on an earthly basis to Jesus. Just as James was too modest to exploit his natural relationship with Jesus, so Jude simply refers to himself as a bondservant.

He wrote this letter approximately between 65 and 70 A.D. just before the destruction of the Jewish Temple by the Romans. It is said that he wanted to write about the common Christian Faith and especially the Apostles teachings, but false teachings were becoming so prevalent during the time period of the letter that he felt led to spend his writing on “contending for the faith.” He felt, as evidenced by his writing, that the need of the church was to keep vigilant and to openly and actively oppose the heresy that was attacking the church.

contend for the faith 2

Just as was indicated in the Epistles of John, the greatest heresy attacking the church and its teachings was Gnosticism. Gnostics opposed the deity and incarnation of Christ Jesus and the call to Christian ethics. They believed that all material and natural things are evil and only the spiritual is worthy of God, so they developed their “spiritual” senses and felt they could do whatever they want in the flesh because it was their spirits that would gain heaven.

Jude also wrote heavily about apostasy and it is such an importance subject and even today is presented in the light of controversy. Apostasy or an apostate is one who knows the truth, but after knowing it and tasting of “its fruit” turns their back on that truth.

Jude seems to echo the concerns that the writer of Hebrews had concerning the subject of apostasy.

“For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.” – Hebrews 6:4-6.

I’d love to do a discourse on apostasy here and now, but I need to save it for after the introduction. Suffice it to say that Jude was very concerned about it at the time of writing his letter.

apostasyIn regards to apostasy, Jude is very similar in his writing as the Apostle Peter in Peter’s second Epistle. Chapter 2, verses 1-18 are very similar to Jude’s writing in verses 4 through 16 and it is not known whether Peter may have used Jude’s writing to explain his or vice-versa. The truth of the matter is that when the Holy Spirit inspired the writers of the letters, in part, it was to confirm the truth and validity of the Word. Despite the similarities there are some intriguing differences as well. It is well worth the time spent comparing the two passages. There are spiritual meanings behind both, the similarities AND the differences and it would behoove us to rely on the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to open our spiritual “eyes” to see the difference.

Standing firm in our faith and in the teaching of the Word of God, being vigilant against false teachers and leaders who would undermine the true Word of God and being confident and assured in our Salvation as we follow after Christ Jesus were the hallmarks of Jude’s letter. It is a short letter, but in terms of significance, it is every bit as important as any of the longer treatise written before.

Jude 1:1, “Jude, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, To those who are called, sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ:”

Jude’s opening salutation lends to the serious nature of what he is about to write, yet he is ever sure to address it to believers and he is modest in stating his authority by simply stating that he is a bondservant of Jesus Christ, not even hinting or exploiting his natural relationship with Jesus other than to state that he is also the brother of James, the writer of the Epistle of James.

He starts out with three characteristics that are true of all believers. Jude is addressing the called, the sanctified by God and the preserved in Jesus Christ. We are called out of the world by the truth and power of the Gospel and the faith given to accept that Word. We are set apart by God, our Heavenly Father, to be God’s special, pure and holy people. A people after his own heart, as it were. We are also preserved and saved in Christ Jesus from the dangers of the world, the damage, corruption and even damnation that is inherent in our sinful nature until we are Redeemed unto the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

In this simple first verse, Jude is already reminding the Christians of the early Church of their standing before God Almighty in Christ Jesus and reminding them and us of the precious promise and blessings that go along with being a called out and special people.

mercy peace loveJude then completes his salutation to the body of believers with these three things:

Jude 1:2, “Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.”

When you give some thought to this simple greeting and you realize and recognize why Jude is writing to the body of believers at this time, it is evident that there is more power in this greeting than at first glance due to the onslaught of false and perverted teaching that was attacking the early church.

Just to remind everyone, mercy means God’s compassionate comfort AND care to His set-aside and special people in times of stress and struggle. It is unearned and given as a characteristic of Godly love to His people. Mercy in this case is a verb as well as a noun. It is a something that is tangible and able to be comprehended, but in the giving, it is also an action that gives the believer strength from and in the Lord God Almighty! In essence, it is a result of faith in action, faith in the Father’s love and compassion for His children.

Peace falls on the heals of mercy. Without the knowledge and the real substance of mercy, we would be hard-pressed to experience true Godly peace. Peace is the serenity AND the confidence that comes from reliance on God’s Word and from looking beyond our natural circumstances to our Sovereign Lord Who is above and beyond any circumstance we face and able to use those circumstances for His own purpose and in the process is continually making us stronger and more reliant on Him.

Both of these qualities are ACTS, actions of God’s Love, His Agape, towards His chosen children. It is, as it were, an embrace of His supernatural affection to each of us individually. Yet at the same time, Godly love is not something that should just be received, but also GIVEN to others. It is a gift in the sense that it is given unconditionally and in turn should be SHARED unconditionally with the rest of God’s great creation!

multiplicationNow notice how Jude finishes off the blessing; he wishes and desires that these three important blessings be MULTIPLIED to us. Not measure or metered out to us by pure addition but rather by multiplication. As a child of God, there is no limitations, no restrictions as to how much mercy, peace and love we can attain. God’s ability is only limited by our ability to accept these three spiritual fruit from Him. God desires that we have as much as we can accept and this is why Jude, under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, was putting no limits to the blessings of these three characteristics! These inherently belong to the church, the special people, called and chosen by God for them to not just enjoy, but to use in strength and purpose, to remain strong in the faith and vigilant concerning God’s Truths.

Next post we will begin with Jude verse 3.

The Last Days, 2 Timothy 3:1-9

prophetic words header wp

I came across this list of Characteristics of Non-Christians in the last days and wanted to present as some food for thought. We all see what is happening in front of our eyes and going on all around us throughout the nation AND the world. It doesn’t take a rocket-scientist to see that Bible prophecy is unfolding right before our eyes.

Remember, we are IN the world but no longer OF the world (John 17:14-16), and though we will be living in the midst of people like described in this list, we should continue to pray for them for our heart-tug should be just as our Heavenly Father’s, that “None should perish, but come to everlasting life!” (2 Peter 3:9).

1Twenty-five Characteristics of Non-Christians in the Last Days:

  1. Men shall be lovers of themselves (2 Timothy 3:2).
  2. Men shall be lovers of money, covetous (2 Timothy 3:2).
  3. Men shall be boasters (2 Timothy 3:2).
  4. Men shall be proud (2 Timothy 3:2).
  5. Men shall be blasphemers (2 Timothy 3:2).
  6. Men shall be disobedient to parents (2 Timothy 3:2).
  7. Men shall be unthankful (2 Timothy 3:2).
  8. Men shall be unholy (2 Timothy 3:2).
  9. Men shall be unloving and without natural affection (2 Timothy 3:3).
  10. Men shall be unforgiving (2 Timothy 3:3).
  11. Men shall be false accusers and slanderers (2 Timothy 3:3).
  12. Men shall be incontinent, without self-control (2 Timothy 3:3).
  13. Men shall be brutal and fierce (2 Timothy 3:3).
  14. Men shall be despisers of good and those who do good (2 Timothy 3:3).
  15. Men shall be traitors (2 Timothy 3:4).
  16. Men shall be headstrong, stubborn (2 Timothy 3:4).
  17. Men shall be haughty and high-minded (2 Timothy 3:4).
  18. Men shall be lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God (2 Timothy 3:4).
  19. Men shall have a form of godliness, but deny its power (2 Timothy 3:5).
  20. Men shall be the sort who creep into households and lead captive gullible and silly women, loaded down with sins and various lusts (2 Timothy 3:6).
  21. They shall always be learning but never able to come to the knowledge of truth (2 Timothy 3:7).
  22. Men shall resist the truth (2 Timothy 3:8).
  23. Men shall have corrupt minds (2 Timothy 3:8).
  24. Men shall be reprobate, disapproved concerning the faith (2 Timothy 3:8).
  25. Men will not progress forward, because their folly will be manifest to all (2 Timothy 3:9).

We are living at a time of history where we are actually witnesses to the Bible and Bible prophecy unfold right in front of us. We can be dismayed, perplexed and doubt, or we can embrace what we are seeing, seeking the direction of the Holy Spirit for our individual lives and purpose and continue to pursue God, our Father with all of our being!

To my fellow Brothers and Sisters, let’s determine to let the light that is within us shine forth the Glory and Brilliance of Christ Jesus that no man will ever be able to say, “I didn’t know.”

Come quickly Lord Jesus, Amen and AMEN!

~~ Where You Are ~~

In the Secret Place I Find You

In the Darkness Filled with Light

For No Darkness Can Surround You

When You Come, It Takes to Flight

For You Are the Mighty Brilliance

That No Liar Can Withstand

Though They Feign to Have Resilience

Where You Are They All Disband

How the Great and Mighty Fall, Lord

Falling Blind and Mute and Lame

Our Tongue a Mighty Two Edge Sword

Coming in Yeshua’s Name.

So, We Do Not Fear the Night Things

Were the Troublemaker Creeps

For We Dwell Under Your Great Wings

You’re The God That Never Sleeps

To the Secret Place You Call Me

It’s Both Deep and High Above

Where No Weapon Can Befall Me

As I’m Swept into Your Love

So Beloved Call Me to You

To My Heart You’ve Been Revealed

Only in You Is My Life True

And My Soul in Yours Is Sealed

where you are poem

Don’t Envy The World

As I was praying the other night, I was seeking the Lord for a word in relation to what is and has been going on around us lately. I wanted something that would be an encouragement and inspiration to my brothers and sisters in Christ and yet also, explain, at least to a degree, what we are witnessing in the world around us and not just in the world but in some religious circles. It truly is enough to make anyone discouraged and wonder where our Heavenly Father is.

Well, it just so happened that the last time I left off reading in the Book of Psalms was at the beginning of Psalm 73, the Psalms attributed to Asaph, and the part of Psalms in the Bible listed as Book Three.

psalms

I’m sure it was no coincidence, but rather the Holy Spirit who was answering my heart’s cry for answers! First, before getting into the Psalm, I want to share with you some research on just who Asaph, the Psalmist, was.

[1]Who was the Asaph mentioned in the Book of Psalms?

ANSWER

There were a number of Levites that King David assigned as worship leaders in the tabernacle choir, according to 1 Chronicles 6:31–32. Asaph was one of these men (1 Chronicles 6:39). Asaph’s duties are described in detail in 1 Chronicles 16. According to 2 Chronicles 29:30, both Asaph and David were skilled singers and poets. Asaph is also mentioned as a “seer” or prophet. The “sons of Asaph” are mentioned in 1 Chronicles 25:1, 2 Chronicles 20:14, and Ezra 2:41. The sons of Asaph were likely a guild of skilled poets and singers, modeling themselves musically after Asaph, their master. The church musicians of our day can be considered spiritual “children of Asaph.”

Psalms 50 and 73—83 are called the “Psalms of Asaph” because his name appears in the superscription at the head of those psalms. Regarding Asaph’s role as a prophet, of particular interest is the imprecatory Psalm 83, which deals with God’s judgment of Israel’s enemies: Edom, the Ishmaelites, Moab, the Hagarites, Gebal, Ammon, the Amalekites, Philistia, Tyre, and Assyria. If we examine the psalms written by Asaph, we can see that all of them have to do with the judgment of God, and many involve the prayers of the people at the prospect or moment of a particular event.

Asaph was a gifted individual. He understood where the gift came from, and he used his music to praise the Lord and communicate His Word to a needy world.

[2]Identity of Asaph

Asaph is identified with the twelve Psalms and is said to be the son of Berechiah who is said to be an ancestor of the Asaphites. The Asaphites were one of the guilds of musicians in the First Temple. This information is clarified in the Books of Chronicles. In Chronicles, it is said that Asaph was a descendant of Gershon the son of Levi and he is identified as a member of the Levites. He is also known as one of the three Levites commissioned by David to be in charge of singing in the house of Yahweh. In 1 Chronicles 6:39 David appoints a man named Heman as the main musician or singer and Asaph as Heman’s right hand assistant and the Merarites at his left hand. Asaph is also credited with performing at the dedication of Solomon’s temple in 2 Chronicles 5:12.

As an officer within the Jerusalem religious system, Asaph would have participated in both the public and private side of that system. He served as an official for several years, starting with King David and serving King Solomon as well, if he is the same Asaph mentioned in 2 Chronicles 5:12. During his long term, Asaph saw the best and worst of other officials. His complaint against corruption among the rich and influential, recorded in Psalm 73, might have been directed towards some of those officials. The words he used to describe the wicked come from the same lexicon of words used by officers of the cultic/sacrificial system.

The articles related to the son of Berachiah and descendant of Kohath refer to the same person. Together with Heman, the grandson of the Israelite prophet Samuel, he and his male descendants were set aside by King David to worship God in song and music. He authored Psalm 50, and Psalms 73 to 83.

Psalms, for generations have always been a great comfort to God’s children and though they deal with rebellion and judgment, they also deal greatly with God’s mercy and grace as well as His Saving Character.

In Psalm 73, ascribed to the aforementioned, Asaph, it would appear to be a very personal cry to the Lord and yet, even while I was praying and reading, I sensed within the verses, a modern-day cry for answers and the admittance and recognition of how we as individuals can still fall short at times. Yet if it wasn’t for God’s unlimited mercy and grace, we would be lost on the slippery path and cliff of destruction that Asaph so aptly names.

The great thing about the Psalms, even though they were written pretty much to extol God’s character of mercy and grace towards the Israelites, His chosen people, because of their inspiration, they can be individually personalized for each of us as well as for the Church of Christ corporately.

psalm 73_1In verse one, we see Asaph proclaiming the goodness of the Lord towards Israel and towards those of us whose “hearts are pure.” But he then goes on to explain some of his own personal misgivings in light of the circumstances happening around him.

1 Truly God is good to Israel,
to those whose hearts are pure.
2 But as for me, I almost lost my footing.
My feet were slipping, and I was almost gone.
3 For I envied the proud
when I saw them prosper despite their wickedness.
4 They seem to live such painless lives;
their bodies are so healthy and strong.
5 They don’t have troubles like other people;
they’re not plagued with problems like everyone else.
6 They wear pride like a jeweled necklace
and clothe themselves with cruelty.
7 These fat cats have everything
their hearts could ever wish for!
8 They scoff and speak only evil;
in their pride they seek to crush others.
9 They boast against the very heavens,
and their words strut throughout the earth.
10 And so the people are dismayed and confused,
drinking in all their words.
11 “What does God know?” they ask.
“Does the Most High even know what’s happening?”
12 Look at these wicked people—
enjoying a life of ease while their riches multiply.

Much like what most of us are seeing and experiencing with what is going around us today, so it was with Asaph. Evil (and I don’t use that term lightly) and corruption are ever present and so very blatant. The Lord warned us these times would be as “in the days of Noah,” and certainly enough, we see the depravity and self-centeredness abound in the world around us.

The arrogant pridefulness and seeming lack of care for others, the lack of service towards others and the concern for self-prosperity is astounding for being so blatant and in your face. To top it off, there appears to be an air of bragging concerning the deeds that some are able to get away with. A total rejection of God and anything related to His character and nature is bad enough, but the things that so many say, as if God doesn’t exist and of course, in most of their minds, He does not. Yet we in the United States, hail from a nation that was founded on His blessings, grace and mercy, yet just like God’s chosen in the past, turned their backs on their Father when things were good, so America has done the same thing today.

pride and arrogance

At times, in our self-pity, when we allow the flesh to rule over the spirit, we can feel as Asaph and wonder.

13 Did I keep my heart pure for nothing?
Did I keep myself innocent for no reason?
14 I get nothing but trouble all day long;
every morning brings me pain.

This is something we ALL fight. It is the proverbial war of the spirit with the flesh, yet because we wear this mantle of carnality, we must determine in our spirit to seek the truth and meditate on the true Sovereignty of our Almighty, Heavenly Father!

Of course, we don’t often mention this to our brothers and/or sisters because it would appear to be a fall into doubt rather than a forward journey of faith. Yet when we seek the Lord and His wisdom, He is quick to show us the truth and reveal the true tragedy of such world belief and behavior.

15 If I had really spoken this way to others,
I would have been a traitor to your people.
16 So I tried to understand why the wicked prosper.
But what a difficult task it is!
17 Then I went into your sanctuary, O God,
and I finally understood the destiny of the wicked.
18 Truly, you put them on a slippery path
and send them sliding over the cliff to destruction.
19 In an instant they are destroyed,
completely swept away by terrors.
20 When you arise, O Lord,
you will laugh at their silly ideas
as a person laughs at dreams in the morning.

The short span of time in which the wicked believe they have the upper hand is nothing compared to the eternity of joy and peace that await God’s children, the chosen of His Heart! The wicked may brag and seem to prosper and get away with corruption today, but at what cost to their peace, not to mention their eternity?!

God Almighty, our Heavenly Father is so very gracious through His Holy Spirit to each of us. He is so willing to guide us, our thoughts and meditations to the truth and let us see the flaws of being envious of those whose lives are nothing more than what the Apostle Peter describes as the “grass and the flowers of the field.” (1 Peter 1:24). Their lives may appear beautiful today, but tomorrow the flowers fade and the grass withers away into nothing!

Thank God for His unfailing love, mercy and grace towards us individually!

21 Then I realized that my heart was bitter,
and I was all torn up inside.
22 I was so foolish and ignorant—
I must have seemed like a senseless animal to you.
23 Yet I still belong to you;
you hold my right hand.
24 You guide me with your counsel,
leading me to a glorious destiny.
25 Whom have I in heaven but you?
I desire you more than anything on earth.
26 My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak,
but God remains the strength of my heart;
he is mine forever.

There is nothing in this world or that the world system has that is greater than the assurance and comfort of knowing we are in the Hands of the Almighty Who is proud to call us sons and daughters, His children! We live such a short time in this natural world when there is a whole lifetime of eternity just over the threshold that is beyond imagining; and it has been PROMISED to those of us who keep our hearts after the Lord! What possibly could the temporary riches or seeming pleasures of this world have to offer to us in the light of true LIFE everlasting?

God's promises

Sadly, to those who place their happiness upon the riches and pleasures of this world, those who openly reject and rail against the Name of the Lord, there is an eternity of darkness, loneliness and separation from the very God Who only desires them an eternity of peace and joy. Yet it is not God, Himself Who is casting them away, but rather it is their own decisions to reject Him and what He has to offer in the coming life. How utterly sad is that?!

27 Those who desert him will perish,
for you destroy those who abandon you.
28 But as for me, how good it is to be near God!
I have made the Sovereign Lord my shelter,
and I will tell everyone about the wonderful things you do.

God Almighty is the ONLY source of true peace and joy. Eternal assurance and comfort has no price by comparison. It is no wonder that those who call upon the Name of the Lord shall not just be saved, (Romans 10:13), but shall rest in the present, assured of safety and belonging in the Hands of our Heavenly Father!

There is nothing in this world that compares, so there is nothing in this world worth envying!

Effort – What Purpose?

anecdotal stories
2 Samuel 15:6, “In this manner Absalom dealt with all Israel who came to the king for judgment; so Absalom stole away the hearts of the men of Israel.”

2Samel 18:14-15, “Then Joab said, “I will not waste time here with you.” So he took three spears in his hand and thrust them through the heart of Absalom while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak. And ten young men who carried Joab’s armor gathered around and struck Absalom and killed him.”

Matthew 6:14-16, “Then one of the twelve, named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What are you willing to give me to betray Him to you?” And they weighed out thirty pieces of silver to him. From then on he began looking for a good opportunity to betray Jesus.”

Matthew 27:3-4, “Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? See to that yourself!”

To No Useful End

During an overhaul in February, 1942, fire jeopardized the Lafayette, the former French liner Normandie. The water that was pumped in to save her capsized the ship at dockside. After eighteen months of intense salvage she was raised and placed in dry-dock – but to no avail. Her hull was so deteriorated and her machinery in such poor condition that further work was impractical. Although the allies thought the ship was worth the time, effort, and money necessary to raise it from death, it wasn’t. Too many months spent buried in the water had ruined it for any useful purpose.

Life without God is like the raising of the Lafayette. You spend enormous amounts of time, money, and energy, only to find it useless. It is so sin-stained and corrupted that it hardly serves any purpose in this life, let alone in the life beyond.

Get Above The Clouds – Dwight L. Moody

Dwight Lyman Moody (February 5, 1837 – December 22, 1899), also known as D. L. Moody, was an American evangelist and publisher connected with the Holiness Movement, who founded the Moody Church, Northfield School and Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts (now Northfield Mount Hermon School), Moody Bible Institute and Moody Publishers. One of his most famous quotes was “Faith makes all things possible… Love makes all things easy.“

Scripture Reference:

Romans 12:1-2, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

The following is an excerpt from D.L. Moody’s sermon, Christ All In All:

GET ABOVE THE CLOUDS

I will tell you what happened to me some time ago when I was out West. I wanted to reach the summit of one of the Western mountains. I had been told that sunrise was very beautiful when seen from the summit. We got up to the half-way house one afternoon, where we were to rest till midnight, and then set out for the top. Soon a little party of us started with a good guide. Before a great while it began to rain, and then it became a regular storm of thunder and lightning. I thought there was little use in going on, and said to the guide, “Guess we’d better turn back; we won’t see anything this morning, with all these clouds.” “Oh,” said the guide, “I expect we’ll soon get through these clouds, and get above them, and then we’ll have a glorious view.” So we went on, whilst the thunders were rumbling right about our ears. But soon we began to get above the thunder-cloud; the air was quite clear, and when the sun rose we had a splendid view of his rays as they tinged the hilltops; and then, as the glorious sunshine began to break on where we stood, we could see the dark cloud far beneath our mountain height. That’s what God’s people want – to get into the clear air above the stormy clouds, and to CLIMB HIGHER away up to the mountain peak. There you’ll catch the first rays from the Sun of Righteousness far above the clouds and mists. Some of you may be in great darkness and gloom; but fear not, climb higher, get nearer to the Master, and soon you’ll catch His bright rays on your own soul, and they will sprinkle back upon others.
