How Sure Is Your Believing?

*Pastor’s Note: This is one of the articles I wrote and posted for my very first website and it was soon after the attack of 9-11-2001. I thought it might interest my readers to read some of my first posted writings. I HAVE updated some of the Scripture references, but all in all, it is pretty much as I posted them on my very first website. The pictures were added for this posting, though.

“You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless? For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.” – James 2:19-20, 26.

This was the lesson that I was going to submit before the attack on the World Trade Centers on September 11, 2001. In the light of that hindsight, it is amazing to me what I see the Holy Spirit wanting to say to those that claim to be Christians. Yes, I said, who claim to be Christians. Remember that the content of this and the study that preceded the last one, I titled “Exploring true Christianity.” Jesus forewarned us in the Gospel of Matthew that many in the last days would come not only claiming to be the Christ or Messiah, but that many would also come in His name, using His name for their own motives and that we were to be on guard against those that come falsely. We have seen in previous studies that the Apostle John has told us to “test the spirits” to see whether they come from God.

test the spirits

This has been something that we have been not only lax to do, but sometimes rather hesitant because of the teaching that we have received and the environment of “political correctness” that has permeated everything including the churches. We have a tendency to believe that if I make a determination about the truth of something or someone, I am judging and therefore I am being non-Christ like. I believe we have been duped by the enemy into believing half-truths because of our lack of studying on behalf of the gospels.

Now, forgive me if I am sounding a bit too critical. That is not my intention, but rather, it is my attention to cause you to think about finding the balance that is entrusted to us throughout the WHOLE scriptures. For every responsibility that we are given in the Word of God, we are given the balance so as to not go to an extreme. We have such an innate tendency to either become condemning, notice I didn’t use the word judgmental, or we become apathetic and complacent. Either extreme is a compromise to the Holy Word of God.

The reason this seems so apropos, is that in the light of the recent attacks on America, they were done because, by the terrorists who pervert the truth of Islam, we are a Christian nation. In fact, any nation who sides with us is considered to be on the side of Christianity as opposed to what they purport is Islam.

My challenge to you is this: it is easy to SAY you are a Christian, but in actuality are you what you say? That brings us to the key scripture for this lesson. James was actually talking to some Christian leaders of his day when he made the statements that are found in the second chapter of his letter. When you read those few verses, he certainly comes on strong, and by today’s standards he would be considered critical and judgmental. Yet, the Word of God stands strong and true to this day.

You know the old saying, my father-in-law used to quote it all the time, “Actions speak louder than words.” At the time, dad was not so well versed in scripture, and it was a common quote. But isn’t it amazing that we have adopted that quote down through the decades at least, and we take stock in and believe what it means. That is what James was trying to get across to religious leaders of his day, those that claimed they were Christians.

actions - words

He wrote this Epistle, this letter at a time when many Christian leaders had become lax in their responsibilities and accountability. It was a time when many in the growing early church were becoming used to the prestige and honor that was bestowed upon the leaders of the early church. It was also at a time when many were being persecuted for their beliefs and being martyred for the same. Because of the persecution that was overtaking many, many needs were not being met.

Today, there are many who do believe in Jesus. In fact in the true Islamic faith, Jesus is recognized for being a great teacher, a messenger of God (just not the last one), but certainly not as the Son of God and definitely not God incarnate. Jesus was an historical figure. Anyone who was to say that the Jesus who was born to Mary, the wife of Joseph was not a real person would probably be looked upon as someone who crawled out from a cave.

But that belief alone is not enough to assure those that believe a place in the Father’s Kingdom. James boldly states that even the demons believe. We certainly do not believe that they are assured salvation, for the scriptures are very clear about their final outcome. Their works belie the fact of a belief in His redemptive authority and power.

When we believe with total certainty the actuality of something, our actions demonstrate that belief. For example, when you walk into a darkened room in your house, you instinctively reach for the light switch with full expectation that when you flip that switch on, there will be light. You do not analyze the situation, because through what you have been taught, in conjunction with experience, you KNOW that when you flip that switch, light will shine forth. You know it, you don’t give it a seconds doubt or thought. In fact, it is so profound a belief that when a light has blown or a circuit is broken, it actually throws you for a second or two. You know what I am talking about. You never enter that room and before you throw the switch, think to yourself, I hope the light isn’t burnt out, I hope the circuit breaker isn’t blown, what happens if this doesn’t work, etc. You have come to know that when that switch is thrown, light appears.

That in it’s simplest form is what James is talking about. If you let doubts pervade your thoughts your actions would be frozen and you would never even consider throwing that switch. You couldn’t will the light to come on as if by some magic formula. Just knowing how the circuits work that allow the electricity to the bulb wouldn’t be enough to activate the light. Speaking to the room or switch or light source wouldn’t accomplish anything; you had to do something to make it all come about. So it is with our faith, our belief.

believing vs knowing

When we have come to the point, through teaching in conjunction with experience, that it is no longer just a matter of believing something, but it has matured to the point of KNOWING something, our faith is acted upon. You no longer analyze your circumstances; you don’t stop and think, “I believe this way so I must do this thing,” rather you just do and your life demonstrates by action what it is you do believe. Anyone who spends anytime around you will know what you believe. Your actions do speak louder than your words!

In Christian circles today, we have relegated speaking to a high art form. Hey listen, I’m a preacher, I know, at least to a degree, what it takes to captivate a crowd. But, in the process of relying so much on speech, we have forgotten the importance and overall necessity of actions.

James says it well in these verses, “If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,”’ and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.” – James 2:15-17.

To do like James describes is almost like reciting a magic formula or a spell. The words are there, but there is no substance. And, this is one instance where the saying, “it’s the thought that counts,” has absolutely no value. Faith or belief, like so many other godly attributes demands action for it to be what it is claimed to be, and to the world at large, actions do speak louder than words.

Let’s take this one step further. What I am about to say next may cause quite a commotion. Are you relying on a few words or phrases that you may have once said, to secure your place in heaven? Are you believing that those “magical” words alone opened the doors to an eternity of bliss? Or, was the commitment you made at the time you knelt before the Savior enough to allow Him to change you into a totally different person? If someone who never knew you were to spend a day with you, would they see a unique individual, or just one who talks about high and mighty things? Would that person know what you believe by spending time with you? Was it just the confession of the mouth or did belief precede that within your heart and mind?

James, Peter, Paul, John, and all the other disciples who walked and talked with Jesus didn’t just believe in what He said. Yes, it started out as belief, but it soon became knowledge, and that is what has made their testimonies so dynamic, so alive with power and authority. As we mature, and granted we all mature at different rates, we must go beyond just believing, we must go beyond just the sayings, we must come into the knowing or the knowledge. It is knowledge that makes us act the way we act. The more we know, truly know, the more we act.

Paul said it this way, “And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping (actions) of the saints for the work (actions) of service, to the building up (actions) of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.” – Ephesians 4:11-13, (bold emphasis mine).

apostles, prophets, evangelists

That is why we preach and teach and exhort and prophecy to all and any who would listen. We must equip the saints so that they can do the work. So that they can act in their lives. We serve one another. We serve those that are less fortunate. We do so out of love, which requires us to act. Our service to one another actually builds, strengthens, fortifies the body of Christ. The reason? So that we all, meaning not one left behind, we all attain a oneness of faith in the Son of God, Jesus Christ and we come to the knowledge of Him. That knowledge is not a head knowledge of some historical person, but rather the intimate heart knowledge that goes with a personal, in depth relationship. That takes action. I know that is what the Body of Christ, the Bride is to be. A living, powerful, dynamic force that is preparing for the day of the coming Bridegroom. Just talk? Not from where I stand. Hopefully, not in your life either.

Let’s not just talk about it anymore, talk is fine to encourage one another, but let’s get to work! Come quickly Lord, Jesus your Bride is waiting!

Be Careful Where You Walk . . .

Been awhile since I posted any of my Brother’s poetry. I was looking through some that I had saved from his Facebook page and found this one I love. Please also check out his Book of Poetry, The Journey Home, A Collection of Poetry which you can find by clicking on the book title.

“Be careful where you walk my son this world is dark with sin, always look ahead of you, for yesterday has been.”

“Do not look back as Lot’s wife did; you see it was her fault, because she did not let the world go she became a pillar of salt.

“Always pray God makes a way on this journey of your life, be kind and love your fellow man; son thrive to do what’s right.”

“Walk by faith and do HIS word HE will direct your path; stay far away from evil men and thing’s which just don’t last.”

“Be a man of GOD my son, don’t ever quit or sway you know right now I’m proud of you because you listen to what I say.”

“I’m glad that your my son,” I said, “But you are GOD’S son too; point the world to Jesus, be kind in what you do.”

“So be careful where you walk,” I said “And to your heart be true;” he said, “Daddy you be careful because I follow after you.”

The Gospel According To – Billy Sunday

Billy Sunday WPWilliam Ashley Sunday (November 19, 1862 – November 6, 1935) was an American outfielder in baseball’s National League and widely considered the most influential American evangelist during the first two decades of the 20th century. Converting to evangelical Christianity in the 1880s, Sunday left baseball for the Christian ministry. He gradually developed his skills as a pulpit evangelist in the Midwest and then, during the early 20th century, he became the nation’s most famous evangelist with his colloquial sermons and frenetic delivery. Sunday held widely reported campaigns in America’s largest cities, and he attracted the largest crowds of any evangelist before the advent of electronic sound systems. He was often accused of being too harsh of which he never apologized for stating that “the absolute truth can be harsh.”

The Gospel According to Billy Sunday

What does converted mean? It means completely changed. Converted is not synonymous with reformed.  Reforms are from without-conversion from within. Conversion is a complete surrender to Jesus. It’s a willingness to do what he wants you to do. Unless you have made a complete surrender and are doing his will it will avail you nothing if you’ve reformed a thousand times and have your name on fifty church records.

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, in your heart and confess him with your mouth and you will be saved. (Romans 10:9). God is good. The plan of salvation is presented to you in two parts. Believe in your heart and confess with your mouth. Many of you here probably do Believe. Why don’t you confess? Now own up. The truth is that you have a yellow streak. Own up, business men, and business women, and all of you others. Isn’t it so? Haven’t you got a little saffron? Brave old Elijah ran like a scared deer when he heard old Jezebel had said she would have his head, and he beat it. And he ran to Beersheba and lay down under a juniper tree and cried to the Lord to let him die. The Lord answered his prayer, but not in the way he expected. If he had let him die he would have died with nothing but the wind moaning through the trees as his funeral dirge. But the Lord had something better for Elijah. He had a chariot of fire and it swooped down and carried him into glory without his ever seeing death.

So he says he has something better for you–salvation if he can get you to see it. You’ve kept your church membership locked up. You’ve smiled at a smutty story. When God and the Church were scoffed at you never peeped, and when asked to stand up here you’ve sneaked out the back way and beat it. You’re afraid and God despises a coward–a mutt. You cannot be converted by thinking so and sitting still.

Maybe you’re a drunkard, an adulterer, a prostitute, a liar; won’t admit you are lost; are proud. Maybe you’re even proud you’re not proud, and Jesus has a time of it.

Jesus said: “Come to me,” not to the Church; to me, not to a creed; to me, not to a preacher; to me, not to an evangelist; to me, not to a priest; to me, not to a pope; “Come to me and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28). Faith in Jesus Christ saves you, not faith in the Church.

You can join church, pay your share of the preacher’s salary, attend the services, teach Sunday school, return thanks and do everything that would apparently stamp you as a Christian–even pray–but you won’t ever be a Christian until you do what God tells you to do.

That’s the road, and that’s the only one mapped out for you and for me. God treats all alike. He doesn’t furnish one plan for the banker and another for the janitor who sweeps out the bank. He has the same plan for one that he has for another. It’s the law–you may not approve of it, but that doesn’t make any difference.

Pray Like Jesus

“Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are. I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.” – John 17:11, 15-16.

Jude Verses 9-11

Jude 1:9-11, “Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” But these speak evil of whatever they do not know; and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves. Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.”

The last lesson, in verse 8 we discussed in length a bit about the “dignitaries” the angelic beings specifically who had fallen, but which includes ALL spiritual beings. Jude continues with his discussion concerning one of the greatest of the Lord’s angels, His warrior angel, Michael. Though this incident is not recorded in any of the other canonical Scriptures, it is most likely possible that since Jude was a devout Jew, along with his brothers, including Jesus, that Jude is borrowing from an ancient manuscript called the Assumption of Moses. Others who view this Scripture theorize the story could have been passed down through tradition, none-the-less, we realize that it was STILL by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit that Jude wrote this and the point of the reference is that even the Heavenly Angels will not mock or speak evil of other angels.

Michael the archangelThis reference goes to show that even though Michael IS an archangel, and specifically the one that God Almighty will use to cast Satan down (Revelation 12:7-9), he still did not presume to speak reproachfully to the angelic being that rules the other demons! He deferred to God, Himself to do any rebuking! Such is the order even among the angels of God!

We don’t know all the particulars of this story Jude is relating, yet it is the point that even the angels in Heaven will not do what the apostates here are earth are willing to do, despite the power and authority granted to these entities for the time being! Such is the heart and mind of an apostate.

The sad truth of the matter is that without thinking and especially concerning any possible consequences, those that are apostate are brazen enough to speak mockingly and disrespectfully enough about things of which they are ignorant of and have no direct knowledge of.

This type of person, fallen to such a degree rejects any authority, natural or spiritual, even if they do realize an ordered society NEEDS some sort of rule and order. They do not attempt to hide their arrogance or pride when it comes to how they feel and see any authority. God Almighty, being the Supreme and Sovereign Authority makes no difference to their fallen minds.

Now here Jude goes on to tell just how deep their depravity and perversion is willing to be displayed. Though they seem to be totally ignorant about the spiritual, when it comes to the knowledge of natural instincts, they do not even hesitate in fulfilling the gratification of their sensual hunger. Jude writes that they become “like brute beasts,” like unreasoning animals, they are willing to pursue their perverse and sexual appetites to garner gratification and in the process they corrupt and destroy themselves!

Both my boys used to work in areas of law enforcement and when we DO get into discussions about the state of the world and sometimes the obvious results of a persons criminal activities, they often repeat a saying that they picked up, “when you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes.” It may seem harsh but so many that follow after and pursue their own self-gratification seem oblivious to the apparent consequences of their actions and it is today, becoming even more prevalent and noticeable.

Again, we need to remember that the Word of God, though written by the HAND of men, was written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. These men, Jude included, wrote as the Holy Spirit led them to write! I again lay this foundation because of the harsh indictment that follows as we go into verse 11. “Woe to them!” Because these apostates are stubborn and rebellious and they remain unrepentant in their hearts, they are storing up for themselves the wrath and judgment of God that is promised to ALL who choose to reject God’s Authority AND His Grace and Mercy!

wrath and judgment

This is what the Apostle Paul wrote concerning this very thing in his letter to the Romans, “But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who “will render to each one according to his deeds . . .” – Romans 2:5-6. He goes on in detail in a few more verses but it is most definitely a stinging indictment of the judgment that is being earned for those who wish to only appease themselves.

Jude goes on to explain the depths of corruption that they have subjected themselves too. First, “they have gone in the way of Cain.” We all know that Cain murdered his brother Abel and was thus cursed, but what pushed him that way? Cain suffered from a case of vengeful jealousy. Cain’s sacrifice was rejected but his brother Abel’s was accepted by God. In essence, Cain rejected God’s way of sacrifice by the blood of, in this case a lamb, only to try and appease God by his own means. Cain literally rejected God’s remedy to cleanse man and in his own way tried to justify himself in his own way. Sounds so much like those in the world today. “I am a good person and I don’t do wrong, so a loving God will accept my good deeds,” though there is so much teaching AND evidence to the contrary!

In reality, reliance upon yourself and upon human efforts leads to a dismissal and hatred of God’s Grace and thus can and often does lead to persecution and yes even murder. “For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another, not as Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous.” – selfishness1 John 3:11-12, and “Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.” – 1 John 3:15.

Ultimately rejecting God’s way of doing what is necessary leads us away from a SELFLESS ability to love, to a very selfishness and self-centeredness that only pursues self-gratification.

Next post we will continue with Jude verse 11.

From The Abundance of The Heart – 4

Part Four:

Continuing on now from Part Three:

Let’s look at the difference that Jesus made in the lives of tax collectors and prostitutes and especially in relation to the letter of the Law, versus the Spirit of the Law. He refused to let the religious leaders follow the “letter” of the Law and He did so by demonstrating the life and power of the Spirit of that very Law. I have said it many, many times and I will not stop preaching it until the Lord calls me home:

Jesus stated that the Law and the Prophets, the Word of God written up to that point and what was to be written is accomplished in just two commandments, “Jesus said to him,” ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ “This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ “On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”—Matthew 22:37-40.

Jesus our example

Jesus lived this AND He demonstrated it. When the religious leaders wanted Him to do something about the political situation, He let it be known that He was there for a spiritual purpose, to show the way of Truth and not to change the politics of the time! He demonstrated that living the way of Love would take care of the political problems as well as others. I have also stated this before, He didn’t come to abolish sin, but rather made a way for sinners to escape the penalty of judgment! He didn’t come to condemn the world, but rather to show the world that through Him we could all have life and that more abundantly! (John 3:17, John 10:10). That life is spiritual life reborn for that is what we were dead too as long as we were slaves to sin.

Why then do we feel we have the right to be condemning rather than to show the world that they can all have life through Him!? How do we balance preaching the truth without compromise and yet showing those that need it most that they are loved? We balance it by having the right heart, the right spiritual attitude. We do it by doing what the Lord tells us to do and nothing more or nothing less. We do it by being obedient to Him and Him alone, rather than justify why we as individuals should do it our own way! Remember, Jesus IS our example and His example was lived according to what He stated more than once; “Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.” – John 5:19, and also, “For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak.” – John 12:49-50.

So now I ask you this; if Jesus IS our example and I’m here to tell you He is, then we must follow the same example that He set and be ever cautious to do AND speak what He tells us through the Holy Spirit! Remember this statement as well, “Therefore settle it in your hearts not to meditate beforehand on what you will answer; for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist.” – Luke 21:14-15. Now this is written in relation to being brought before authorities and leaders and such, but it IS a spiritual principle in that we need not worry ahead of time what we need to say when giving a testimony of the Gospel of Christ.

pray like Jesus

So, how do WE deal with evils of this world? Exactly like Jesus did, exactly the same way! We pray, pray and pray. We pray for all those in leadership whether we agree with them or not, AND this is especially important in this age where we KNOW the Lord is coming back soon. We pray for those who have rule over us.  We pray for the teachers and the shepherds and those responsible for our spiritual well-being. We pray for the Lord’s will to continue to manifest itself in the world, even if we don’t totally understand what is going on. We walk in the Spirit knowing full well that God IS in control! We pray for one another for strength, for faith, for courage and for each of the fruit of the Spirit. We pray for the blinders of the enemy to be removed from the lost and that their hearts and spirits would be fertile ground for the life and heart changing Word of God. We pray for a clear vision of the Lord’s timing and the ability to move in it!

We also love those that are unlovable; those that are sinning, openly and privately, and we love them with actions and not relying on our feelings. We have to be the example of Jesus Christ to them in a world where Jesus Christ is just a name! We have to stand up for righteousness but we also must realize that what is coming has been foretold. Our goal is not to change this world, for Christ Jesus Himself will do that eventually, but our goal is to allow the Holy Spirit to change hearts. He and He alone knows which hearts will be broken on Him and which hearts will have to be crushed. That is HIS job and HIS ALONE! We are not to hinder that process by believing we have a better way!

Matthew 18:7, “Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes!”

Luke 17:1, “Then He said to the disciples, “It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they do come!”

Jesus gave us a clue here and in other Scriptures of what is to come. Sin is going to happen. Innocents are going to die. People will continue in perversion despite love and the power of the Word, but woe to them who cause it! We already know there are those that will sin and will be judged. Our purpose, our job, our calling is to show them a better way so that they will be without excuse. Just as in Jesus day, they will either accept it or reject it. It is only our duty to be obedient, so let’s put away the condemnation, and start demonstrating what is really in our hearts! Remember, not condemning does not mean we condone! Condemnation is sentencing already a person. Only Christ Jesus can AND will judge. We do not have to condone sin, but we cannot condemn the sinner. We may know according to the Word the outcome of unrepentant sin, but we can NEVER fully know another person’s heart before God!

filled with Holy Spirit

Let’s allow the Holy Spirit to fill our cup to overflowing for it is only then that it will be able to flow out to those around us who truly need it. Yes, I am to love my brothers and sisters but that is really the easy part. I am also to love my neighbor who may be doing something that I detest! Now that is a real demonstration of God’s love!

Philippians 4:4-8 says, “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy – meditate on these things.” (bold emphasis mine).

Consider this prayer: Lord fill my heart to overflowing! Cause me to see and to hear, oh Lord, all you are directing me to do. Help me to be blind to what the world and even the religious tell me I am supposed to be doing. Allow Your Light and Your Light alone to be a beacon to those around me! Let them see You and You alone and help me to diminish so that Your will may be accomplished in the lives of those around me! Help me to never be ashamed to proclaim Your Truth and Lord as I am obedient in what You have called me to do, let it not return void, but rather cause it to be profitable spiritually to those that You direct it too! In Jesus Name, in His authority and by the Power of the Holy Spirit, let it be done! Amen and Amen!

From The Abundance of The Heart – 3

Part Three:

Continuing on now from Part Two:

Those of us who are supposed to be true spiritual leaders as compared to the many religious leaders, instead of teaching others to demonstrate and show love to only their brothers and sisters in the Lord, we ought to teach that it is especially necessary to demonstrate it (Godly, selfless love) to those that are our neighbors and who don’t always follow after the Lord. Jesus came to “save that which was lost!” He’s our prime example, we are the disciples. We are the ones that proclaim to the world that we are Christians! We are like Christ, we should portray Christ-likeness!!

However, just look at how pious and religious we are. Shame on you in the world for you are all scum!! You are evil and the spawn of your father the devil who is and was a murderer and liar from the beginning!!! We sound so religious. We pick up our picket signs and go to the abortion clinics and condemn those that are doing evil rather than praying for them and witnessing to them about the love of the Lord and the redemption found in Christ!! How are they able to see God’s love with signs and pickets sticking in their faces and names being called to them? We aren’t to compromise with the world and we have a right, no, rather we have an obligation to speak out against wickedness and evil, BUT, there is a right way and a wrong way and Jesus gave us MANY examples in the Gospels of how to deal with the “religious” as well as the world!

religion vs spirituality

We act like if we demonstrate and protest and point out all the wickedness we will make a change for the better spiritually, as if our words are that magical and mystical power while our hearts (our inner man, our spirit) is harboring ill-will toward those that are living in perversion and taking the lives of innocents!! Many of them doing it in ignorance of the truth for who have they had as an example of what real Godly love is all about??

Instead of accomplishing what we set out to do, “defending the Truth of the Bible and the righteousness of God,” we have pushed the very ones that need what we do have so very far away, that they are not willing to listen to ANYONE who says they are a Christian! Can you genuinely blame them? It’s no wonder that in this day and age the world is crying out that all Christians speak is hate speech! Look who it was that Jesus made mad! It was the very religious leaders that were trying to maintain the status quo! Where did we get off track and go so far wrong ourselves? The Bible and the righteousness of God Almighty, doesn’t have to be defended! The Living and Powerful Word of God has stood the test of time and is evidenced in all of creation!

Paul said this, “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.”—Romans 1:20-21.

People can say there is no God and that the Bible is a lie all they want, how does that offend or attack us who are supposedly living by faith already? Aren’t we supposed to be heart-broken for these that are lost AND blinded by the enemy of their souls? They already know they do wrong, it’s written on their hearts, the Bible says. That is why seeing man as God does is so important! Romans is such an awesome Book on Salvation and it shows us that we are all culpable as far as sin is concerned. The difference between us who have experienced and acknowledged the truth and those that remain unrepentant is that they haven’t been shown or demonstrated why it is better to walk in the way of righteousness! Jesus came to show men the way, that is why He is called The Way by so many. We are to be His example to mankind and yet we do just the opposite in the name of “religion.” What truly is in the depths of our hearts, I have to pose that question?

heart of man

Yes, we preach and teach it but we aren’t always showing it and I’ll tell you why! Because so many people are not being taught as the disciples of Christ were. The Word, the Spirit of the Word has been watered down by the letter of the Word and twisted to justify the hardness in so many religious leader’s hearts! We are back where we started when Christ came the first time! Hearts of religious leaders, those entrusted to teach others the way of Christ have been hardened by compromise to garner more numbers, more money, recognition and prestige, just so they can say, look at what I have accomplished – oh, for the Lord of course!

But remember what Jesus stated, that man is going to be justified or condemned by his idle words or by what proceeds forth from his heart or his inner man, his spirit! He says this in Matthew 7:21-23 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’” What a horrific statement that will be to those that thought their religious and righteous pious attitude was enough!

This is confirmation that it isn’t WHAT we do, it’s the attitude and the spirit with which we do it! God will judge us by the spirit with which we accomplish things for Him. Lawlessness and unrighteousness come from the abundance of the heart or the spirit of man. Is He the One that told us to do what we are doing, using His Holy Name, or are we jumping on some religious bandwagon for our own motives? Jesus says that He will have to tell those ones, He never knew them!! In other words, they weren’t and aren’t even now abiding in God, they are just USING His Name! It’s the difference between knowing of Him and having a real relationship WITH Him. Their spirits are not alive to the Father and thereby they aren’t doing what He instructs to do. They are religious yes, but they are not spiritual, worshipping the Heavenly Father in their actions, spirit to Spirit with God the Father!

An example of this would be if you had knew of a particular lawyer and you needed to appear in court, and instead of relying ON that lawyer you knew of, you just used His name to get what you needed. The judge would laugh you out of court after giving you a stern and condemning warning! So it is with Jesus. The world knows Him as an historical figure. They don’t all KNOW Him as the Messiah, their Savior AND Lord!

knowing jesus

Now I want to refer you back to King Saul; what was it that caused the Lord to reject him? Saul was God’s appointed because the people wanted a man as king rather than the Lord Himself. You will see in 1 Samuel 15 that King Saul got greedy and when Samuel confronted him with what the Lord said, King Saul tried to justify his actions by saying that he disobeyed the Lord so as to give the Lord sacrifices! In Saul’s mind the “ends justify the means!” He was trying to bribe the very God who appointed Him King! His heart, his spirit was not right with God.

This is what Samuel told Saul, “Then Samuel said: “Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He also has rejected you from being king.”—1 Samuel 15:22-23.

I have worked side by side with preachers who have followed this very rule, that the “ends justify the means” and I’m not embellishing that fact either and yet that has NEVER been a Biblical Truth, for it flies in the face of integrity and faith in the Lord’s ability to provide! I will tell you, I disassociated with those people and did so rebuking them for their callousness and lack of vision! I was an Associate Pastor in this particular church and I was one of them that helped start a charter school with these people until I saw how they used and manipulated the Word of God! Their talk told me one thing, but eventually their actions demonstrated to me the evil in their hearts! They actually LIED to parents and the public!

Now this may seem harsh, but it is far less harsh then what the Lord, Himself says about those that twist and manipulate the truth. I pray for these people, even today, it is a fact of my past, but I cannot give them credibility or even a word of approval. Even as of yet, many years later, they have not demonstrated a heart of repentance but are still operating in their particular community in Arizona with the attitude STILL that the “ends justify the means!” If it will get only one person saved it will be worth it. With that attitude, Jesus would have never made it to the Cross! Rather, what did He do? He prayed the Father’s will no matter how HARD the consequences! THAT is our example, NOT justification of wrong doing for a right cause! It’s all a matter of heart attitude.

ends do not justify means

The sad thing is, this is the type of thing our neighbors who are unsaved see and associate with Christianity. Those with a religious heart as opposed to a spiritual heart are what makes it all the more reason that we have to demonstrate the true love of the Lord to those around us! We have to be willing to show the lost of the world the same love that Jesus did to those He came to redeem. We don’t do that by picketing and condemning. We can teach the truth, we can teach what the Bible says is evil and sin and we can condemn sin, but we need to realize that those who ARE sinning are the ones that we have been called to serve and we can only serve them by allowing them to see that even though God will not sacrifice His holiness, He will NOT give up on His love!

Next time we will conclude with Part Four

Science – Possible Through Belief In Orderly God

anecdotal stories

*Pastor’s Note: I love science. That’s the truth. But – I love hard, factual, quantifiable science. Not so much theoretical although some theoretical science fascinates me as long as it isn’t taught as factual, similar to what is being taught today about evolution. You see, evolution is still a theory and an extremely flawed one at that, but so many push it down people’s throats as if it’s true. If you believe the Word of God, the Holy Bible, you know that is one theory that is outrageously false!

But remember this; real, true science is the pursuit of the truth IN knowledge. God instilled that in us when He created us in His image AND likeness! You see, all knowledge, thus the truth is an aspect of His nature and character. He IS omniscient. He is also, omnipotent, all powerful. With just those two characteristics alone it is not easy to dismiss TRUE hard science for that knowledge, the TRUE knowledge comes directly from Him! Remember the days and age we live in. Daniel prophesied this centuries ago:

“But as for you, Daniel, conceal these words and seal up the book until the end of time; many will go back and forth, and knowledge will increase.” – Daniel 12:4. (bold emphasis mine).

As TRUE Christians, followers of Christ Jesus, we don’t need to fear science, we can embrace hard science for it comes directly from the Father above and it ALWAYS points to His wisdom and knowledge!

Isaiah 40:22, “It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.”

1 Corinthians 1:27-29, “But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, so that no man may boast before God.”

Because God Is

Non-Christian scientists Whitehead and Oppenheimer rightly said that the earliest scientists – Galileo, Newton, Farrady, Copernicus – could be scientific because they believed in an ordered system of a sovereign, orderly God. “Men became scientific because they expected Law in Nature,” C.S. Lewis wrote, “and they expected Law in nature because they believed in a Legislator.”

Humanistic scientists accept the validity of the early scientists’ faith in an orderly system, based on an orderly God, but personally reject that God, preferring to see life as the result of blind, mechanistic, indiscriminate chance. How inexcusably inconsistent! Unbelieving scientists study creation as if God exists, but personally live as if he doesn’t. Since they personally refuse God’s existence, how can they explain an orderly universe based on chance?

Applicable Quotations

Do not be afraid of being free thinkers. If you think strongly enough you will be forced by science to the belief in God, which is the foundation of all Religion. You will find science not antagonistic, but helpful to Religion. – Sir William Thomson, Lord Kelvin  (1824-1907), pioneer in physics.

But again I looked and saw Jesus, my substitute, scourged in my stead and dying on the cross for me. I looked and cried and was forgiven. And it seems to be my duty to tell you of that Saviour, to see if you will not also look and live: How simple it all becomes when the Holy Spirit opens the eyes! – Sir James Young Simpson (1811-1907), pioneer of anesthetics.

There is abundant evidence that the Bible, though written by men, is not the product of the human mind. By countless multitudes it has always been revered as a communication to us from the Creator of the Universe. – Sir Ambrose Fleming (1849-1945), pioneer of electronics.

Both religion and science need for their activities the belief in God, and moreover God stands for the former in the beginning, and for the latter at the end of the whole thinking. For the former, God represents the basis, for the latter – the crown of any reasoning concerning the world-view. – Max Planck (1858-1947), pioneer of quantum physics.

From The Abundance of The Heart – 2

Part Two:

Continuing on now from Part One:

The Spirit of the Word is telling that what proceeds forth from the INNER MAN is the determination or proof of whether what is observed is good or evil. Even the unrepentant of Jesus’ day knew what was meant when someone said your heart is good or evil! Don’t lose sight of the Spirit behind the Word of God.

So, in light of this, that which comes forth from your “inner man” the true you, from your spirit, that part that has the attributes and characteristics of your personality and life is either going to be “good fruit” or “evil fruit.” This is how you can tell whether someone is abiding in God or not. What comes forth in their lives? It’s not just their words, and what they speak. Man can deceive with his speech, but he can’t deceive with his actions. Sooner or later your actions will show the “real” you!

fruit trees

To further prove my point let’s see what Proverbs says, “Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, But the LORD weighs the hearts.” — Proverbs 21:2. The Lord sees what is in the heart (or inner man, his spirit) and even though a man might feel good about himself, the Lord knows what that man is truly made of!

The Prophet Jeremiah wrote this concerning the Lord, our Father, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.” – Jeremiah 29:11-13.

David wrote, “How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You.” – Psalm 139:17-18. David was the man that God told the Prophet Samuel to choose to replace the disobedient King Saul. But even Samuel when choosing from Jesse’s sons, was looking to the appearance and stature of each boy and yet the Lord spoke to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” – 1 Samuel 16:7.

Remember, the Bible tells us that Saul was a head in height above all others and that he was the most handsome man to look upon, yet Saul’s heart was one of selfishness and disobedience to the Lord and His Word!

There are too many Scripture references, too many instances and examples in the Holy Book that show us how the Lord chooses and deals with men; He does so by their heart, their inner spirit, that portion of man that is either alive to Him or dead. We also know that since Jesus and the Father are One, and that the Son only does that which the Father tells Him to do that He does those things based on men’s heart attitude! The verses in Matthew 12 that I gave you are a prime example of this, for just before His statement to the Pharisees, whom He called a brood of vipers, poisonous snakes, the Bible tells us in verse 25, “But Jesus knew their thoughts,—.” He knew their hearts, He knew what was in their spirits. The Pharisees and religious leaders were trying to say that He was in league with the devil, with Satan! The religious leaders!! Those that are supposed to be the shepherds of God’s children and the teachers of what is true and righteous in the Kingdom of God!

brood of vipers

But look again at this example, what did Jesus do when confronted with this evil, and evil it was? He TAUGHT the people the truth! He taught them with authority and power to prove the legitimacy of His Words! This is what riled the Pharisees and two verses before this, the Bible says the “multitudes were amazed!” The Pharisees could only see themselves losing prestige, and power over the people. This had been at a time when there were others who had attempted to lead the people away from the Jewish tradition and each time had been thwarted by the power of the Pharisees and their manipulation of the Roman leadership.

But the difference was that Jesus came in power and authority to preach and teach the truth and to demonstrate the “Spirit” behind the precious Law and Words of God! He also came to give of Himself so that the Spirit of Truth could be had for everyone everywhere and not to just those within the sound of His voice.

How did Jesus deal with the corruption of His day? The tax collectors were robbing from widows and those that were already  poor and didn’t have a means to defend themselves against the greed. They had developed a reputation as being the scum of the earth, so to speak. Jesus called them to Him!

Matthew 9:9-13, “As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, ‘Follow Me.’ So he arose and followed Him. Now it happened, as Jesus sat at the table in the house, that behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Him and His disciples. And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples, ‘Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?’ When Jesus heard that, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’ For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

Matthew 10:2-4, “Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.” (Matthew’s Hebrew name was also Levi).

Luke 19:1-10, “Then Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, ‘Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.’ So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully. But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, ‘He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.’ Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.” And Jesus said to him, ‘Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.’”

jesus and sinners

We have so many instructions, so many examples that are set before us and yet for some reason in this day and age we want to justify why we CAN’T sit with sinners or talk with those who exhibit a corrupt nature! I’m am not condoning compromise of values, because Jesus didn’t, but He also didn’t shy away from those He came to save! Yet today it is probably needed even more so than in Jesus’ day because He IS coming back soon and those that are left may not have another chance to hear the truth and experience the love of a precious Savior and their Father and Creator!

From The Abundance of The Heart – 1

Part One:

Rampant political corruption, religious corruption and manipulation of politics to gain prestige, power or monetary gain, widespread poverty, major sociological class divisions, social unrest, the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer, people abandoning their religious faith and others searching almost anywhere for truth, what a time to live in! Yep, that was the climate at the time that Jesus appeared.

Oh, did you think I was talking about today? Well, I guess it could very well be the same kind of climate. Everything I said IS happening right now as well. There is an old saying, almost as old as history itself, that says, “if we don’t learn from the lessons of history, we are doomed to repeat the mistakes.” Solomon stated this, “That which has been is what will be, That which is done is what will be done, And there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which it may be said, “See, this is new”? It has already been in ancient times before us. There is no remembrance of former things, Nor will there be any remembrance of things that are to come By those who will come after.” — Ecclesiastes 1:9-11.

no remembering

So, we shouldn’t be surprised that what we see is the same thing Jesus came to correct the first time. Even though the landscape is different, the clothes are different and the language has evolved a bit, the heart of man remains the same! Isn’t it time that His-story repeats itself and He who came before, returns again?

I want to ask you in the light of all that I stated above, how did Jesus deal with the issues and the evil that was rampant and prevalent in the world? Was He as you see today in religious circles, an activist willing to organize pickets against injustice? Did Jesus, incite riots or loud protests to demonstrate the need for wide-spread change? Does the Bible give us the guidelines necessary to form the religious organizations necessary to change and influence the political climate? What is the proper way to protest the death of innocents and those that pervert a Godly lifestyle? What DID Jesus do to combat evil?

Forgive me for a bit of what may appear to be sarcasm, but have you READ your Bible? Have you by the teaching and prodding of the Holy Spirit been able to differentiate between the Spirit of the Word and the letter? Have you, like the noble Bereans “received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so” which Paul and Silas taught? (See Acts 17:11).

Jesus taught what to look for! He taught those “that had ears to hear and eyes to see” how to discern evil and the proper way (as His disciples did) to deal with it. He taught first His closest disciples and then taught those who chose to hear and were willing to listen to what He had to say. Does this mean that all who heard what He taught and all who saw His demonstrations of authority believed and followed after Him? No, emphatically no. There were many who were hungry and searching and wanting to know the truth that listened with open hearts and minds! They followed every Word He spoke and still wanted more for He instilled in them a hunger for righteousness! Yes, there were many who heard and walked away, because they felt what He had to say was too hard! In the climate of the time, they thought His teaching was too hard! What made the difference?

abundance of heartJesus said it and Luke recorded it in Luke 6:45, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”

Now I speak often of the difference between the “Spirit” of the Word of God, our Bible, and the “letter” of that same Word. Jesus came to teach it and Paul reminded us of the difference; the Spirit gives life, it has power and authority, the letter can be twisted and manipulated which can lead to spiritual death. The religious leaders of Jesus’ day were notorious for twisting and manipulating the Law to suit their purposes. This is one of the reason’s that part of Jesus’ ministry was to come to provide correction.

Jesus explained this in the verses surrounding His comment about the abundance of the heart in Luke 6.  “For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do the things which I say? Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.” — verses 43-49.

I want you to see how Matthew recorded this same instance as Jesus was answering the devious questions of the Pharisees and religious leaders, “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” — Matthew 12:33-37.

Now I want to make a point here on the principle of the Spirit of the Word as compared to the letter of the Word. In the 37th verse of Matthew when Jesus states that you will be justified or condemned by your words, it has been taught that this shows the power that words carry, as if your words themselves were some mystical and magical incantation or force. This CAN be inferred if you look to the “letter” of the Word, how it is written literally. But what is the principle, what is the Life, the Spirit of the teaching that Jesus is making? Isn’t it that what is in your heart is going to come out and that is what you will be justified or condemned by? Your heart, the evil or good that proceeds from there will determine the type of person you truly are!

letter - spirit

I want to clarify something else before we get along too far; the reference to the heart is not saying that the physical organ is the seat of good or evil. The heart has been recognized as the source of life for our physical being for centuries. Our life derives from that. The term that your heart is good or bad is only an analogy of your spirit or your “inner man.” Our spirit is truly what gives us life, both in the temporary physical realm as well as in the spiritual and eternal realm. Our heart is good if it is alive to God through Jesus Christ, and it is dead or evil if it has not been made alive to God through Jesus Christ.

Jude Verse 8

Jude 1:8-10, “Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries.”

Jude now focuses our attention back to the subject of apostates and specifically pin-pointing their sins. Specifically Jude points to three main areas of sin, as dreamers or fantasizers, they defile and pollute the flesh. They reject authority, any authority and they speak evil of dignitaries. We are to assume due to its inclusion that dignitaries are different in kind than the authorities that Jude lists. I will get to dignitaries in a bit.

feet firmly planted

First of all let’s consider the dreamers or fantasizers. This is a direct indication of their thought processes. First and foremost, we can assume that their “feet are not firmly planted on the ground,” but more importantly that they do not control or tame their thoughts, but rather their thought life is polluted. Their very thinking is vile and they entertain many wicked imaginations. In their thinking and thus in their actions, they end up following in the footsteps of Sodom and Gomorrah and its surrounding cities.

It’s no wonder that the day we live in today is fraught with all sorts of sexual immorality and perversion for it is thrown at us from almost every direction and every medium. It is not wonder that even Christians, true followers of Christ have to “die daily” to the onslaught that wants to overpower the spirit within and give rise to the carnal nature!

Thankfully we have many weapons and “tools” with which to use to overcome this daily fight. Paul wrote to the Philippians this now popular and powerful command; “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy–meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.” – Philippians 4:8-9.

Paul gives us straightforward advice on where to place our thoughts. He is also not afraid to point out that we should follow after his teachings and deeds so that God’s peace will reign in our lives. But before anyone gets a little riled and starts saying that I am teaching others to follow after man, remember it was Paul who also stated this, which any TRUE follower of Christ Jesus can also state, “Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.” – 1 Corinthians 11:1. This statement, as bold as it sounds is the real qualifier of following after another. It is Christ and His character and nature we are to follow. If we do, the world will see Christ in us and we will be living testimonies to the Gospel of Christ Jesus!

rejecting authoritySecond and a very evident sign of the age we are living in today is that these apostates reject authority. These are people whose very lives are taken up with trying to DENY the authority that God in His sovereignty has placed over them. These aren’t simply those who disagree with and try and change things through established lawful means, no, on the contrary, these are those who believe and are filled with lawlessness and anarchy! These people are dedicated to the overthrow of the government. Thus praying for the leadership, asking God Who is ultimately on the Throne to give the leadership wisdom and grace is far beyond their imaginings.

It was the Apostle Paul who advised a young Timothy under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and thus for generations to follow:

“Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.” – 1 Timothy 2:1-2.

The Apostle also wrote to the Romans in no uncertain terms and even stronger command to follow:

“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.” – Romans 13:1-2.

There is nothing that tells us in the Word of God that we have to LIKE or agree one-hundred percent with the authority that is over us, but when we subject ourselves to it and try to change it within the Biblical and godly guidelines, that is surrendering to GOD’S authority and admitting that He truly knows best for His people.

render to caesarRemember, it was the religious of Jesus’ day, the Teachers of the Law that tried to trip Him up and His wise words did not allow them an opportunity to argue! And He said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” – Matthew 22:21.

Let’s consider now the third characteristic of apostates. The New King James Version (NKJV) says they, speak evil of dignitaries.” Lest you confuse this with those in authority, most specifically in the natural, the leaders appointed by God to rule, I want to give you a few renditions from other translations.

The New American Standard Bible (NASB) and the Amplified Bible (AMP) translates “dignitaries” to “angelic majesties.” The New International Version (NIV) translates “dignitaries” to “celestial beings.”

The New Living Translation (NLT), depending on the newest version translates “dignitaries” to “supernatural beings”, or “glorious ones.”

The English Standard Version (ESV) and Berean Literal Bible (BLB) translate “dignitaries” to “glorious ones,” as well.

Understand, that some of these modern versions are being updated as new texts and information becomes available. This is why STUDY of the Word is so important and to NOT restrict oneself to just one study Bible. I KNOW all the controversy concerning what some believe to be “legitimate” translations, I have studied the origins of many translations for years, yet when you consider why the Bible was given to man under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and you realize the inspiration of the Holy Spirit has NOT ceased, you can take comfort in going into depth with the Word of God! Remember, it is the Holy Spirit that teaches us today. He STILL leads and guides God’s children into ALL truth!

Okay, I laid that foundation so that you will understand that when we discuss the “dignitaries” of Jude’s writing, we are not just speaking of natural authority that is appointed over us by a sovereign God. In fact it is most assuredly angelic beings and specifically the “fallen” angels that Jude is speaking of.

But this leads to the question of why should we be concerned about those that “speak evil of, slander, scoff, or blaspheme” fallen angels? A similar passage as what Jude writes is found in the Apostle Peter’s writing, “The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment, and especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority. They are presumptuous, self-willed. They are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries, whereas angels, who are greater in power and might, do not bring a reviling accusation against them before the Lord. But these, like natural brute beasts made to be caught and destroyed, speak evil of the things they do not understand, and will utterly perish in their own corruption,” – 2 Peter 2:9-12.

fallen angels

Apostates and false teachers do not hesitate to make light of and even speak evil of those things they do not easily understand. Sadly, it is within their unregenerate and rebellious nature to scoff at those things that are greater in power and might than even themselves. Should we take JOY in the fact that any of God’s glorious creation are going to perish in eternal judgment? I dare say we are treading a very fine line even rejoicing in the plight of the fallen angels. We can rest assured in the fact that the victory over evil HAS been won through the work of Christ Jesus, but to glory in another of God’s creation’s downfall? No, that borders on arrogance and self-pride.

The truth is, we have nothing to fear because of the victory that Christ Jesus has wrought in the lives of all of His disciples. But we need to humbly remember, it was and IS, His victory. We have no stake in that. Remember this clearly before becoming too haughty, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He has made us accepted in the Beloved.” – Ephesians 1:3-6.

ALL the work, and thus any and all glorying belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father. A true apostate does not appreciate the work of the Lord’s hands even concerning the creation he doesn’t see. But as true children and heirs of the Lord, we need to meditate and contemplate in awe and wonder, His true majesty!

Next post we will begin with Jude verse 9.

God’s Grace, Our Gift

*Pastor’s Note: This is one of the articles I wrote and posted for my very first website in the mid 90s soon after I got my first computer. I know, I was a slow up and comer! I thought it might interest my readers to read some of my first posted writings. I HAVE updated some of the Scripture references, but all in all, it is pretty much as I posted them on my very first website. The pictures were added for this posting, though.

Genesis 1:26a Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness.“

Before I venture into the concept of God’s grace, I want you to first look at this Scripture in Genesis. The Lord says, “in Our image, according to Our likeness.” When I teach, I love to use both these concepts for so many stop at “in Our image,” alone. Image denotes appearance and since the Bible tells us that no one has seen God (John 1:18, 1 John 4:12), I like to teach from the concept of the Lord’s likeness.

image and likeness of God

We were created in His likeness. What is it that denotes the LIKENESS of God? First, we are created as spiritual beings. John 4:24, “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” Second, we have attributes that demonstrate themselves in personality. God is a Person. He is a Spiritual Person with a personality.

Personality exists where there is intelligence, mind, will, reason, individuality, self-consciousness, and self-determination. Now I want you to notice the self-consciousness and self-determination. These are only two of the attributes that separate us from the animal kingdom. But another important attribute that goes along with these other two self-awareness attributes is will. The ability to choose and use that self-determination and self-consciousness.

These are attributes that you will find in the character and personality of God, our Lord and Heavenly Father. Now, the reason I laid this basic foundation was to lead you to understand why God’s Grace is so important in a creation that can be willful and self-determined. You see, God will not drag you or anyone else, kicking and screaming into His heaven! God will not violate your will, because it is one of those characteristics and attributes that identify you “as in the likeness” of Him.

Some people feel that they have “one up” on God or have Him “over a barrel” so to speak. This is the root and seed of pride. These people are proud of what they perceive as their own self-sufficiency. But I have to ask this question; do we as created beings ever really have the “upper hand” on God?

Those that think they do and live their lives basking in this pride have a hard truth facing them. This is what the Apostle James tells us in James 4:6-8 “But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble. Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”

humility

When Jesus was teaching His disciples, He relayed a very important principle, “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”— Matthew 10:28. He was talking about the Day of Judgment and what awaited every living creature. But still, God will not take people to heaven against their wills.

Thankfully though, one of the great attributes of the character of God is Wisdom. You see, He is Omniscience, which simply means, all-knowing. He is smart and coupled with that wisdom, He knows what it takes to help us “choose” the right decision. The Bible tells us, “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men.“— Titus 2:11. All men have seen or will see the salvation that God’s grace brings. All men will know. Yes, they can still choose, but now they can choose without ignorance.

Romans 5:15 says, “But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many.” You see, God is in the business of changing people like you and me on the inside. God is in the business of giving people new hearts. He is in the business of changing how people think. He opens their minds to understand the Scriptures.

Paul also said this in 2 Corinthians 6:1-2, “We then, as workers together with Him also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For He says: ‘In an acceptable time I have heard you, And in the day of salvation I have helped you.’ Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” You see, the Lord calls those to remind and to plead with others of the truth of their ability to choose.

No, God’s hands are not tied and we don’t have Him “over a barrel” in truth. God is in the miracle working business even today. The great modern day miracle of grace is how people change their thinking so they freely choose to follow Him. His Wisdom, His Knowledge hasn’t changed nor will it ever change. Yes there are those still, who out of “willfulness” will continue on the path they freely choose, but for us there is what the Apostle John reminds us of, “And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”— John 1:16-17.

1 Timothy 1:12-14 “And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.” (Bold emphasis mine).

freedom to choose

In closing, remember what the Apostle Paul stated in the verses in Romans chapter 5, this grace is free and it’s a gift. A gift is given to those that are loved. But just as any gift has to be received, so is it with God’s grace. No, my friends, He won’t force it on anyone, but it is there for the taking. It’s just a matter of being willing to reach out and take it. That my friends is what self-determination is! That is what it means to be in the LIKENESS of God! The ability to reason and the freedom to choose; what is your choice today?

The Initiative Against Drudgery – Oswald Chambers

Oswald Chambers (July 24, 1874 – November 15, 1917) was an early-twentieth-century Scottish Baptist and Holiness Movement evangelist and teacher, best known for the devotional “My Utmost for His Highest.” Even as a teenager, Chambers was noted for his deep spirituality, and he participated in the evangelization of poor occupants of local lodging houses. At the same time, Chambers also demonstrated gifts in both music and art. While at Edinburgh, he felt called to ministry, and he left for Dunoon College, a small theological training school near Glasgow, founded by the Rev. Duncan MacGregor. Chambers was soon teaching classes at the school and took over much of the administration when MacGregor was injured in 1898.

“Arise, shine.” – Isaiah 60:1a.

We have to take the first step as though there were no God. It is no use to wait for God to help us, He will not; but immediately we arise we find He is there. Whenever God inspires, the initiative is a moral one.

We must do the thing and not lie like a log. If we will arise and shine, drudgery becomes divinely transfigured.

Drudgery is one of the finest touchstones of character there is. Drudgery is work that is very far removed from anything to do with the ideal – the utterly mean,* grubby things; and when we come in contact with them we know instantly whether or not we are spiritually real.

Read John 13; we see there the Incarnate God doing the most desperate piece of drudgery, washing fishermen’s feet, and He says – “If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.”

It requires the inspiration of God to go through drudgery with the light of God upon it. Some people do a certain thing and the way in which they do it hallows that thing for ever afterwards. It may be the most commonplace thing, but after we have seen them do it, it becomes different.

When the Lord does a thing through us, He always transfigures it. Our Lord took on Him our human flesh and transfigured it, and it has become for every saint the temple of the Holy Ghost.

*mean: as used here, something or someone ordinary, common, low, or ignoble, rather than cruel or spiteful. (Chambers)

More Quotes From Leonard Ravenhill

Leonard Ravenhill (June 18, 1907 – November 27, 1994) was an English Christian evangelist and author who focused on the subjects of prayer and revival. He is best known for challenging western evangelicalism (through his books and sermons) to compare itself to the early Christian Church as chronicled in the Book of Acts. He was a proponent of the moral government or Governmental theory of atonement.

One of Leonard Ravenhill’s gifts was his ability to spontaneously create insightful spiritual maxims as he spoke. These were short, memorable observations about God, the church, and the world. David Bercot always took a notebook with him to these meetings to write down some of Leonard Ravenhill’s observations and maxims. Here are even MORE of Leonard Ravenhill’s spiritual insights from those meetings:

[Concerning the fixation that today’s church has with numbers, with growth at any price:] “The church has paid a terrible price for statistics!”

“Everyone recognizes that Stephen was Spirit-filled when he was performing wonders. Yet, he was just as Spirit-filled when he was being stoned to death.”

“If a Christian is not having tribulation in the world, there’s something wrong!”

“Any method of evangelism will work—if God is in it.”

“Church unity comes from corporate humility.”

“You can have all of your doctrines right—yet still not have the presence of God.”

“Many pastors criticize me for taking the Gospel so seriously. But do they really think that on Judgment Day, Christ will chastise me, saying, ‘Leonard, you took Me too seriously’?”

“If Jesus had preached the same message that ministers preach today, He would never have been crucified.”

“You can know a lot about the atonement, and yet receive no benefit from it.”

“If the whole church goes off into deception, that will in no way excuse us for not following Christ.”

Valuables Inside

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” – John 15:4-5.

Abiding In Christ

John 15:4-8, “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.”

I have a question; what is the difference if any of abiding in Christ or Christ abiding in you? Simple question on the surface. Just a matter of semantics, maybe. Or is it when you give it some real thought?

Too many times, because of the rush of our daily lives, we read through popular Scriptures, take it for its surface value and don’t give it any further thought. Yet it is the Holy Spirit and our relationship with Him that is continually prompting us to think about what we have read! How can we take what we have read and plant it into our hearts and spirit, if we haven’t given it a moment’s thought? Something to seriously consider.

One of my daily prayers, something that I am always whispering to the Lord throughout my day, is for Him, Christ Jesus and our Heavenly Father to ‘be glorified in me’ and also ‘let Your light shine through me.’ I am constantly thinking of what John the Baptist stated to his disciples when they came to him complaining that Jesus was actually gaining more disciples than John, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” – John 3:30.

he must increase

So what IS the difference between abiding in Christ and Christ abiding in us? Let me give you a simple analogy that is fitting for the subject. Consider your home, your house as a vessel. What do you do within the four walls of that vessel? You live and go about your daily lives. The thing is, when the world passes by, all they see is the vessel and in most instances it is the same as the ones next to it and surrounding it. You and your life are hidden inside.

Now consider the Lord Jesus Christ living in your home or house. The same thing applies. He is cleaning out the house and making it acceptable, but when the world passes by, they just see another house or vessel. He is hidden inside. Yes, the inside is clean and acceptable, but the world doesn’t see it.

Now consider this truth; YOU are the house, the temple, the vessel. With the Lord Jesus Christ abiding in YOU, the inside is clean and acceptable before God, the Father, but when the world passes by, Christ Jesus is hidden within you. However, when you are abiding in CHRIST and He is the vessel, the world doesn’t see you because you are hidden within Christ Jesus, but the world then does see Christ Jesus and He IS different than all the other vessels surrounding you! When you are abiding in Christ, you are hidden from the world and what the world sees is the glory of Christ Jesus and thus the Father.

Now take this further into the things Jesus stated in the Scriptures above. He is the Vine. He is the source of all nourishment, growth, power, etc. As long as we are the branches abiding in Him as the Vine, we will produce fruit based upon His nourishment, etc. If however, for whatever reason we are detached from the Vine, then we die and we are worth nothing except to be placed in the fire. In this case, we abide in the Vine and the Vine does not abide in us, or in this illustration, the branches.

vine and branches

Let’s look in the Gospel of Matthew:

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:14-16.

We are the light of the world according to Jesus. BUT, that is if we are abiding in Him and He is abiding in us. In essence, Jesus is the Light. We are either the basket OR the lampstand. When Christ Jesus abides in us, His light is there “and it gives light to all who are in the house.” However, a light hidden within the four walls of a home or house is like keeping it under a basket. The only ones getting the benefit are the ones in which the light abides. However, when the basket is removed or it is placed on a lampstand OUTSIDE the house, then we are hidden within the Light and the Light is shining “before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

“As for you, let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father.” – 1 John 2:24.

“As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him. Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming.” – 1 John 2:27-28.

“The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.” – 1 John 3:24.

It is evident within these Scriptures that is important for Christ Jesus to abide within us, but equally important that we abide in Christ Jesus. Jesus told His disciples this right before His death and it was recorded under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit for ALL generations:

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” – John 13:34-35.

love one another

To be a disciple of Jesus’ means we walk and live as He did. “The one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.” – 1 John 2:6. If we abide in Him, the world sees Him and glorifies the Father AND the Son, because that is who they see. Him abiding in us, gives us the strength and the renewed spirit to be able to let “Him increase while I decrease.”

So it would be very easy to go through life with Christ abiding within us, but if that is how we govern our new lifestyle, Christ would be hidden from the world and never have an opportunity to see Him. This is why throughout Scripture it is evident that we need both circumstances. We NEED to abide in the Vine to receive power and nourishment, but we NEED to abide in Christ so that the world will see Him and be able to glorify the Father. We may be the only Gospel message some people see and we need to make sure it is the True Word of God and not tainted with our own person! He MUST increase while we decrease. Then is when the Father and Son are glorified. Then is when the world sees the true Light that came into the world, not hidden within, but shining for all to see!

In closing I want to share something my wife found on social media and posted. It is the saying that was appropriate for this lesson:

The devil wouldn’t be attacking so hard if there wasn’t something valuable inside of you. Thieves don’t break into empty houses.
