Faith Beyond Believing

“For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.” – Romans 8:24-25.

“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” – 2 Corinthians 4:17-18.

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” – 2 Corinthians 5:7.

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” – Hebrews 11:1.

Now, before you get the wrong idea, this is not about my cancer or treatment, though in truth it is only one of the things that we ALL face in our day to day lives. 2020 has given the world a real wake up call and with the earth groaning as well as the people of the world, it is time to take stock of our corporate vision, especially as the Church, the Body of Christ.

Many of you who follow me, already know my teaching on the differences between mere believing and an eternal faith. It is a stage, a level of difference that MUST start with believing but also must mature into actual, spiritual working faith.

In essence, this lesson is going to be on vision, on sight, on what you see and perceive and what you NEED to KNOW as truth! 2020 has caused many of you, my loved ones and friends to have to exercise and practice your faith in the Lord, God Almighty. All over the world, hurricanes, typhoons, cyclones, earthquakes galore in places rarely known to have them. Devastating forest fires requiring major evacuations with homes utterly destroyed. We have witnessed and are in the midst of the worst corruption probably since the days of Noah. It is blossomed in our Nation and in other countries of the world and it is not hiding in the dark anymore! Yet, for those of you who ARE children of the Living God, you have seen His hand displayed in your lives and are able to move forward with renewed hope and promise. This doesn’t mean there isn’t pain or agony, but the spiritual hope overcomes the natural pain and allows us to move forward in the Holy Spirit.

The best statement, one of the best Scripture verses ever penned is by the Apostle Paul under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” This is a short yet utterly profound statement and you can meditate and think on this for a long time, over and over again. NOT sight! Something much, much greater. Sight is a natural sense given to man to perceive what he is looking at; yet at the same time, it is a weaker sense, for you can not always rely on what you see, and in essence there are things that you do not, or will not be able to see with only your natural sight!

This is why spiritual renewal, spiritual rebirth is so important. We are NOT JUST natural, carnal creations. We were created of the stuff of stars, the earth, yet we became LIVING beings when God Almighty breathed within us the breath of His life! (Genesis 2:7).

We became part of the earth, but we were always meant to be a part of God, our Heavenly Father. It was only sin that separated us from Him on a spiritual basis and yet, to assure man his free will to love God truly and sincerely, and knowing fully well ahead of time that man would sin, the Father had a plan, an awesome, extremely wise plan that would allow man to come back into the spiritual relationship that God desired of His created children! With that relationship would also come the ability to transcend the lower carnal and natural senses and rise into the benefits of the more supreme spiritual senses.

So, what do YOU see going on around you? Do you see only the chaos, troubles, corruption and earthly destruction or are you also able to see the workings going on behind what your natural eyes see? We HAVE been given a road-map, a guidebook as it were, the Holy Bible. Each day, each week that goes by, we see more and more things opening up within the Holy Book that we might not have identified in the past because the timing just wasn’t there yet. But God, as our Father and Teacher has left us with knowledge and instruction and has promised that as we get closer to His planned end of natural time, our knowledge, both natural AND spiritual would increase and be revealed. If you read and meditate on His Word, you will notice that we are right in the midst of that even now!

We all know the famous Scripture of Daniel 12:4 where the Angel told Daniel, “But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.” This describes knowledge in general, but it also confirms what Isaiah wrote concerning spiritual knowledge as found in the passages of Habakkuk and Isaiah, especially the last part of verse 9 of Isaiah, “For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD As the waters cover the sea.” (Isaiah 11:9b, Habakkuk 2:14).

What do YOU see? Are you looking only with your natural eyesight or are you seeing the spiritual depth behind what your eyes tell you? I want to share with you a dream my youngest adult son shared just about a week ago concerning what is going on in our nation and as he prayed, he asked the Lord about some of what was evident to all and how was He the Lord going to work it out.

Jason had been reading the Word and praying and as many of us have done, he asked the Lord some “whys, and how” when it came to the Lord’s hand and especially in the National crisis the U.S. is facing at this present time. This also goes hand in hand with all the other things that the year 2020 has dropped in our laps, so to speak.

What Jason said the Lord showed him was an old console television set with the 4×3 picture instead of the fancy ones we watch today. On the screen, he could see the corruption and lies, the chaos, not just in the Nation but in the world. He saw fires, earthquakes, hurricanes, lives torn asunder and politicians and media moguls making obvious misleading statements. He acknowledged to the Lord, that yes he did see that, but, Lord, “where are you?”

The Lord spoke to his heart and told him, you are seeing what the world wants you to see but the picture you are seeing is on very minute part of what is going on in the whole world. Jason stated that the next thing that happened is that the sides, top and bottom and DEPTH of the picture grew larger and larger in his eyesight until the portion that had appeared on the screen was no more than a pinpoint. Jason said it was like looking at a little island surrounded by a vast ocean of activity.

Then he said the Lord started to clarify the surrounding edges that reached out beyond what seemed like and infinity and in the midst of all going on in the world, the Lord showed him multitude upon multitude of angels warring and fighting against demonic forces, fallen angels that were in possession of corrupt men’s lives and wills. The Lord showed him that what he was now seeing was NOT what the world wants man to see, but the Lord was revealing the truth of what is going on behind the veil of the natural. It effected him greatly and I reminded him of another account in the Word of God.

In the account found in 2 Kings, we see Elisha revealing a similar thing to one of the servants; “And when the servant of the man of God arose early and went out, there was an army, surrounding the city with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” And Elisha prayed, and said, “LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” – 2 Kings 6:15-17.

Anyone who has been walking with the Lord for a while will KNOW, not just believe, but actually KNOW that our Sovereign and Righteous God Almighty has NEVER left His Throne of His seat of power! We don’t always have to rely on what our eyesight is telling us in front of our eyes for our spirit WILL reveal to us the TRUTH of what is going on behind each and every circumstance.

God has a purpose and a plan and always had and it has always had a time-limit, an expiration date, as it were.

God’s plan has ALWAYS been to have a Creation that would love Him for Who He is and not just for what He can or will do for us. What He does for us is based on a spiritual Love, Agape, that transcends any mere natural love. He is also very well aware that some will accept that plan and His will to fulfill that and that many will reject it. Yet, we, as His children need to remember that His DESIRE is that none should perish and so as obedient and faithful children we should pray and love accordingly as well, desiring that none should perish even though knowing that some are going too by their own free will.

Times like this, when you KNOW what is going on behind the scenes in the natural are the perfect climate AND opportunity to present the Gospel of Love and Hope to not just those who may be lost right now, but also to those who are allowing the fears of what they see in front of them cause them doubt which hinders their ability to move from mere believing into the maturity of having a spiritually knowable faith.

As Christians, Brothers and Sisters who FOLLOW after Christ Jesus, we need to remember AND to remind ourselves that no matter our natural age or even how long we have been born-again or spiritually reborn, we are all on a personal and private journey led by the Holy Spirit within us. This is why it is so important, no, so VITAL to encourage one another and to sound out to one another the great blessed HOPE that we ALL have in Christ Jesus.

This lifestyle journey takes PRACTICE, it takes exercise, to remind ourselves sometimes daily that it isn’t always about what we see in front of us, but what we know to be truth behind what our natural eyesight tells us. We NEED to remind ourselves that no matter what WE desire an outcome to be, God is always and has always been in control to fulfill His plan for the ultimate Redemption of those He calls His sons and daughters, heirs with Christ Jesus!

In closing, do NOT lose hope, keep believing in the KNOWLEDGE that our God and Lord, our Heavenly Father is in total and absolute control! That is mature, spiritual faith that transcends, goes beyond, believing!

Are We There Yet?

“Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

“Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you. Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us be of the same mind.” – Philippians 3:12-16.

“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.” – Philippians 3:20-21.

Anyone who has ever been on a road trip during vacation, either with children or as a child themselves will be able to relate to what I am about to say. You already know that life is a journey; it is a road we travel, whether willingly or not, we are all on that road and our Heavenly Father has destined each of His creation to journey on that road.

As Christians, students and disciples of Christ Jesus, we know that our Lord is in the driver seat. This is not necessarily so with those who have not accepted His Lordship. To us, however, He is the Ultimate Parent, our Heavenly Father and we have surrendered our lives to His driving, if we are truly Christians. This is what makes us so different, spiritually, as opposed to religiously, with the rest of the world. We KNOW Who is in the driver’s seat!

When we embark on this journey, it is as if we are on a vacation to an exciting destination and the anticipation and awe can be overwhelming. Just like children on a road-trip, we are excited by all the sites and sounds, the different locales that we pass by, for everything is fresh and new to us. It was just a few months before my 17th birthday when I embarked on this wondrous “road-trip” and the excitement in my life was palpable. The girl who is my wife now was there and she can remember how I was. It was her brother whom the Holy Spirit used to open my eyes to this new and wondrous life. However, this is not a recollection of my life, but rather an observation on how we ALL have felt when we first start out on our new spiritual journey!

Any parent can relate to this excitement. How the children are keen-eyed and struck by all the things that they don’t necessarily get to see in their everyday lives. That excitement, depending on the person can last a while depending on their personality and the perceived awesomeness of the new situation.

But like many natural road-trips, as the time marches on and the miles go by, soon the surroundings start to take on a routine familiarity. The newness starts to wear as tiredness and even boredom with the sameness starts to sink in. We’ve all seen it and to a degree we have all experienced it.

No matter the road you travel, and I personally have traveled all over the U.S. and the lower Provinces of Canada, and I can attest to the fact that sooner or later, all the roads and highways seem to appear the same with very few exceptions. This is usually when the drive, the journey itself, becomes rather routine and mundane and to a child, when the excitement starts to wear off, boredom sets in.

This is when that familiar phrase, a question really wrapped in a disguise, starts to rear its head to most parents; “Are we there yet?”

Now about this time, I can just imagine the smiles popping up on your face as you read this for you all know just how true this is! As a parent, we all KNOW that sooner or later, this question is going to break forth. It’s just a guessing game as to how long it will take for the children to ask it. But you as a parent KNOW it is coming, sooner or later!

Now in the natural, a wise parent will have things prepared to occupy the time of your children when that boredom of the surroundings does kick in. It could be books, coloring, etc., though now days with the technology, it could be movies or games played with onboard monitors facing the back seats.

Keep them occupied until you arrive is the goal of any and every parent on an extended road-trip. Well-meaning assurances of “We’ll be there soon,” help for a time. Inevitably the question will come forth from the children again, “Are we there yet?”

Some parents know that the real question or comment lies just below the veil of that thinly disguised question. “I’m bored,” or, “I’m tired of the same old thing,” are the real statements behind the simple question. So it is with us spiritually. Think about it, don’t just take my word for it. How many times have you stated to our Heavenly Father, “Are we there yet?” When in actuality the real statement on your heart is “I’m bored,” or, “I’m tired,” or even still, “I want something exciting to do.”

Yet with an inordinate amount of patience and love, our Lord and Father will speak to our hearts, “It’ll be soon, but just keep busy with what I’ve given you until then.”

A lot of times, that’s when the idea of leaving our comfort and familiar surroundings behind start to flood our minds. We soon start to dwell on what we have left behind rather than the excitement of the destination that so recently held our focus. Many times, this is when the enemy of our souls tries to gain a foothold. His favorite tool is doubt and/or regrets. You see, all of us on this spiritual road-trip have a past. That is in actuality what we have been saved from.

Consider this when you read the Scriptures above penned by the Apostle Paul. Paul was complicit with no less than the murder of many Christians. If the past weighed heavy on anyone, it had to have been the Apostle Paul. Yet, through the Holy Spirit’s inspiration, not to mention His Grace and Mercy, Paul penned those famous and often used verses to encourage others on their journey through life, to ever look forward and NOT dwell on the past, or in other words, where they had been! Because the journey itself MAY be long (not always, necessarily), it is important to keep our heart AND mind (our spirit) focused on the prize, the real destination!

We truly do HAVE things prepared for us to occupy our time productively until we arrive at our true and ultimate destination. The Lord has promised to give us gifts, things to accomplish, but also the ability or equipping to use those gifts He has given us. In the natural, it wouldn’t be very wise or productive to take along a stack of coloring books for your children and not supply them with the colored pencils or crayons with which to be able to draw. So it is with our Lord with each of us, His children on our “road-trip.”

When you think of it on a spiritual basis, when the sites around us lose their appeal and excitement, when the road on this pilgrimage seems to become “stale” and common-place, isn’t that when we are able to fully appreciate the “gifts” given to us and start to use what the Father has given to us to occupy until we arrive at our destination? As long as the world around us holds excitement and awe, we aren’t even a bit interested in the “gifts” our parent has prepared for us for the journey. We are too enamored with the sights and sounds of the world going by around us.

Spiritually speaking, there is nothing wrong with us asking the Lord, “Are we there yet?” when it is an indication of our “boredom” with the world and the things of the world. It can show that we truly ARE looking forward to our ultimate arrival at our TRUE Home, the Heavenly Kingdom with our Father. When we can arrive at the point in our journey where we are “tired” of the world and all of its trappings, when the world and its temptations no longer hold sway or excitement in our lives, then we can truly begin to occupy our journey with the things the Father has prepared for us to do.

The thing is, as a child of the Lord’s, we may not know just how long our journey is to be, but when we have come to the point in our lives when we can truly TRUST and KNOW that the Lord is the One in control, the questioning of “Are we there yet?” can be one of excitement that we are getting close to the destination rather than just “boredom” with our surroundings.

I know that as long as the Lord has a plan to use each and every one of us in our individual capacity, that the journey will continue until the appropriate time of our arrival Home. The difference between our Heavenly Father and our natural parents is that He will always understand the yearning and excitement we develop as we get closer to our ETERNAL destination!

Principalities, Powers and Rulers of Darkness

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” – Ephesians 6:10-13. (Bold emphasis added).

I am not one who believes in demons behind every bush. I’m sorry, but I won’t give the enemy that kind of credit, BUT, the truth is, there ARE spirits that are influencing lives of those around us every day. This does not mean that every bad action or circumstance is spirit-caused, but we DO need to be aware there is evil at work and it is becoming more and more blatant as the time of the Lord’s return is approaching.

Sometimes, we as Christians just do NOT give enough credit to the carnal fallen nature, because if we can blame something else, then we can feel as if we are not responsible. It reminds me of the former comedian, Flip Wilson when he used to say in his comedy acts, “the devil made me do it.” In reality, too often times it is NOT the devil or his minions but rather our own selfish desires and wants that cause us to do things that are far removed from God’s Commandments!

However, with that all being said, there are attacks that are becoming more prevalent due to spiritual forces and influences and they definitely USE those who retain a carnal, selfish and self-centered desire to have what they want no matter who it hurts or at what cost.

Sadly, when we are unaware of these forces, they can take us by surprise and catch us off-guard, but when we are aware of what is at work, maintain an intimate relationship with the Father through the Lord, Jesus Christ as empowered by His Holy Spirit, we are usually not caught so off-guard and in fact are prepared for these onslaughts, at least to some degree or another.

One avenue the enemy has ALWAYS exploited and even appears to be accelerating in, is the area of families. The devil has always known that if he can divide families, he can initiate destruction and this has been his motive since the very first family. Adam was created first and was meant to not just be the “priest” of his family, but its protector, its supplier of all things, material, ideological and theological. He was to honor and cherish his wife and kids, not to lord it over them, but to guide, nurture and instruct them. It was only when he allowed his wife Eve, in conjunction with the wily and manipulative devil, disguised as a serpent, did the order that God had established become divided and destroyed. The consequences introduced the devil’s true intentions into the world in the form of murder and destruction.

Now before you get the wrong impression, I am NOT blaming Eve as many do, but rather, I am blaming Adam! We have no idea just how long Adam walked with the Lord in the Garden before God chose to give him a help-mate, soul-mate. The fact remains is that Adam walked and talked with the Lord and was given great responsibilities and great blessing to carry them out. In the end, it was Adam, who was created to spiritually cover Eve, who yielded to her words and ultimately the temptation of the serpent.

Jesus, Himself spoke very openly and blatantly about the devil’s intentions and motives and those who CHOOSE to follow in the devil’s footsteps; “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” – John 8:44.

Destruction, isn’t that truly what murder is? To destroy something and remove it from existence must seem like the ultimate power to him. What greater destruction than eternal murder? The enemy of our souls KNOWS that his time is limited. He was created as one of the most intelligent of God’s creations and so he is NOT stupid nor ignorant, BUT, his greatest downfall is and always has been his pride in himself. He is very much aware of the fact that God, his Creator has put a time-limit on his antics and that HIS very destruction is nearing, so what better motivation to destroy as many other souls as he can before his own eternal demise!

As we move closer and closer to the time of Christ Jesus’ return, not just to gather His Bride, but also to rule the world for a millennium, the enemy and his fallen comrades have stepped up their onslaught against God’s creation, no longer just hiding in the shadows as they once used too. Families will ALWAYS be the primary target.

In the 1980s, the divorce rate in the U.S. was about fifty percent. Today it has actually gone down to about forty-two percent, but the reason is that more couples are deciding on a civil, non-marriage lifestyle rather than to get married with the chance of divorce. Actually the divorce rates of those who have been married twice has steadily increased and those who have been divorced at least twice and are in their third marriage has increased exponentially.

There are more people living together in what is considered a civil union rather than a religious or spiritual union than ever before. The incidence of mixed or blended families has increased drastically and it is considered close to twenty percent of families where kids share parentage with their siblings. It is no wonder this generation is growing up either without hope or future prospects or feel entitled and due for their state of being. The world and not just the U.S. is RIPE for demonic and spiritual influences to abound.

Now I’m going to make a confession; this chapter in Ephesians is one of the favorite of many, many Christians, because of the Scripture I quoted in the very beginning and for the analogy of the armor of God, which is quoted by so many Christians. I have used this chapter in various forms myself in my teaching and preaching in the past, but I always looked at it in at least two parts, until this morning! As I was preparing and praying for the Holy Spirit’s guidance on what to say about the principalities, powers and the rulers of darkness, as I always do, I started with the first verse to get into the context.

Now without going into detail, my family is going through some spiritual warfare in many areas, familial and medical and though my wife and I have had many years and much experience in trusting in the Lord and not relying on what our eyes alone see going around us, other family members haven’t had the luxury or benefit of our years of experience and sadly, some things just have to be learned with the guidance of the Holy Spirit!

But when teaching on what I have put down as the title, it was done in the sense of recognizing and realizing where a lot of problems stem from. Then I read what was leading up to my main subject; something the family is experiencing right now. I found it very enlightening and in truth had NEVER put the two parts together in a combined teaching, but sometimes, situations identify themselves in the light of Scripture and the truth is revealed fully in a new light!

We talk about our real battle when we go through things. We talk about the armor of God to defend against attacks of the enemy, but there is a whole paragraph that is identifying specifics that lead up to the REASON for relying on the armor of God and the TRUTH of God’s Word!! I truly believe now, it is because this is the battle that has been raging from day one with Adam and Eve through to where we are at this moment in time!

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord. Bondservants, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ; not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, with goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men, knowing that whatever good anyone does, he will receive the same from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free. And you, masters, do the same things to them, giving up threatening, knowing that your own Master also is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.” – Ephesians 6:1-9.

Everything leading up to our necessity for being able to IDENTIFY our true enemy, the ability to stand in the face of attack and the armor we rely on to withstand those attacks is listed in the very first paragraph of chapter 6. You will notice that the Apostle Paul addresses the family unit AND those responsible for it and yes that INCLUDES employees AND employers and their responsibilities! All the attacks, all the battles we fight, stem from the very thing the enemy of our souls has wanted to destroy from the very beginning!

Now those of you who know me and follow my teaching know I am very adamant about the characteristics of the spiritual life being all about ACTIONS as compared to just feelings! Love, Godly love is active. It is NOT reliant upon how we feel about the subject being loved but upon our trust and obedience to God and His Word. So it is with other spiritual characteristics. For instance, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” This speaks of the commandment to HONOR father and mother which promises long life if followed. This commandment does not say, AGREE 100% with everything your parents say, but to obey them IN THE LORD! Honoring is an action that demonstrates trust and gratitude as well as giving respect when due. This is done in the Lord and as unto the Lord! But this comes with a caveat. You have to know the Lord and His ways because you do NOT obey your parents IF they are NOT following after the Lord. Just because they are your parents does not mean they are morally or spiritually right and, you will NOT be God’s child just because of your parents. You WILL stand or fall on your own relationship with God as Father. If your parents are godly, you follow them then, for that is right and honorable. If they are not, YOU DO what is godly and honorable. Ultimately it all comes back to you, individually. You do what is right, honorable and holy before the Lord. If your parents are godly and follow the Lord, (even amidst mistakes), they deserve your honor and in the long-run, it is beneficial to you.

Now parents and especially fathers; “do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.” Now I know there are some that would love to end this and change the comma after the word wrath to a period. However, this is NOT the case. This is a WHOLE sentence and thus a commandment of the Lord! Do not provoke, do not incite or stimulate, or do not stir up to wrath or anger your children, BUT, a big, big but, therefore or however, bring them up, instill in them, teach, stimulate them in the training and admonition, advice, counsel, guidance of the Lord! In other words, you teach them the ways of the Lord and how God handles things and not the ways that the world dictates.

Now the same thing goes for employees and employers for we ALL must work and be accountable to someone. A true employer is running a business, sure, but if he is a godly employer then he is running it like a father runs his home. The employee, though he is getting paid in some form, he is obedient and honorable towards that employer as if the employer were the parent. In the same way the enemy wants to destroy the family, he will look to destroy and employee – employer relationship for the running of the home, and especially in this day and age, is dependent upon that smooth and honorable relationship.

In closing let me remind everyone of this fact; division is not of God. Yes, Jesus stated that He came to cause division and there would be division, but that was due to one fact and one fact alone, either you place Him as the Head of your household or you do not. When He IS the Head then and only then is no division! (Luke 12:53). Jesus was NOT condoning division, only that He came demanding total surrender to Himself or there WOULD be division!

I want to leave you with the words of Jude as inspired by the Holy Spirit. He explains where divisions truly come from:

“These are grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts; and they mouth great swelling words, flattering people to gain advantage. But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ: how they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts. These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit. But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.” – Jude 1:16-21. (Bold emphasis added).

You will know where the divisions and the attacks are from. They do not come from those who seek to do God’s will, but from those who refuse to acknowledge the truth and only want what they want, no matter who is in the way. If you see yourself in this battle, the enemy is from “out there” not from the one standing next to you and the ONLY way to win this battle is to recognize the enemy and put on the proper battle gear!

One last thing, the fighting will sadly increase as the enemy knows his time is getting shorter. That means, that we will have to be prepared all the more and we will have to have one another’s backs. If we are to stand, we are to stand together as the united Body of Christ!

Publicity – Changes People

anecdotal stories
*Pastor’s Note: I was looking for something a bit thought-provoking and as I was browsing through one of my favorite source books that I have used often, I read this following illustration. Now understand that this article and the book associated with it was published in 1995 and yet in the light of today, how right were/are these insights of the writer, Virgil Hurley and especially today. If anything, it is so much more obvious to those of us who are Christians and those who have NOT been swayed by the very media outlets so many look too!

All I can truly say, is this should give us ample reason to pray all the more fervently!!

Deuteronomy 13:11, “Then all Israel will hear and be afraid, and will never again do such a wicked thing among you.”

Acts 5:6, “The young men got up and covered him up, and after carrying him out, they buried him.”

Acts 5:11, “And great fear came over the whole church, and over all who heard of these things.”

Just Show It On TV

In its report on the Los Angeles riots in 1992, the Webster Commission concluded that live television coverage exacerbated the looting and violence. It was an unintended message, the Commission concluded, but seeing law enforcement officials respond slowly to the emergency emboldened those who would have been reluctant to steal had an alert police presence been in the riot areas. A media feeding frenzy sizzles with any catastrophe, war, or sensational murder. It happened at the Lindbergh trial, it happened in the big city riots of the 1960s, the Los Angeles riots of 1992, and reached perhaps its highest temperature in the trial of O. J. Simpson.

The main problem with media coverage is that it offers no value judgment on what it portrays. The cameraman shoots what is happening and the anchor people may feel free to offer an editorial comment. But it is outside the ability of the media to offer condemnation or acquittal. Only a constituted authority can do that – the police, the courts, and the Bible. Long ago God ordered His people to quickly execute His judgments against lawbreakers so that others, seeing the swift retribution, would be afraid, not emboldened. Given the nature of the media, the lengthy judicial process, and our poor memories, how do we expect to restrain criminals today?

A Holding Pattern – Revisited

This first part is not mine, but I have found comfort in it over the years and so I kept it archived in my files. I have used the idea of holding patterns in the past and right now is a perfect time to revisit the concept with an eye toward God’s plans and purpose.

*If you’re a seasoned air traveler, chances are you’re familiar with the term “holding pattern.”

That’s when your plane is unable to land because of unfavorable ground conditions. Generally, the pilot announces that he’s been told to maintain a holding pattern, pending an update from the control tower.

It happens regularly, so planes have to carry enough fuel to stay airborne until they can land safely.

The Bible says, “Wait for the Lord; be strong. Let your heart take courage.”

When God puts you in a holding pattern, it’s not just a question of having enough faith to receive His promise. It’s also a matter of having enough “spiritual staying power” to stay airborne until it comes to pass. That’s why you need to carry enough spiritual fuel to handle delays and wait for clearance.

The Bible refers to the Holy Spirit as “a rushing mighty wind” (Acts 2:2). After God had delayed Noah long enough to accomplish His purpose, “He sent a wind” (Genesis 8:1).

Anytime a wind comes from the presence of God, it blows away all hindrances and obstacles. It dries the ground under your feet so you can move ahead. It demolishes the spirit of fear and heaviness that makes you want to quit.

David asked God, “What is man that you are mindful of him?” (Psalm 8:4).

Even in times of frustration and waiting, God is still thinking about you and working everything out for your good.

His delays aren’t denials.

So, when you sense a divine breeze in your spirit, rejoice. It’s a sign that He’s clearing you to land and good things are about to happen.

Today, there is so much talk about the Church being awakened and stirred up and I believe that God is doing exactly that, BUT, I also believe that when God starts to speak to us through His Holy Spirit we as the Church of Christ are not to be reactive, but rather, the Church is to be ACTIVE! In other words, we move as directed by the Holy Spirit; remember, Christ Jesus is the Head of the Church, spiritual wisdom and direction comes from Him through His Spirit.

Some of the things I have been hearing lately just causes me to shake my head because I see so much REACTION to what is going on around us rather than wise spiritual action. You see, in the past, throughout history, when the Lord wanted His Church to move forward, there has always been a time to pause and to think about what the Lord is saying to us so that we can move at His direction and in His wisdom.

When aircraft are in holding patterns, they are in constant communication with the tower for direction and the wisdom in holding a pattern that is based on the knowledge of those in that tower. So it is with God. When things are happening like we are seeing right now in our Nation and in the World, God is not silent or still. He HAS a wise spiritual plan to be fulfilled and He uses His servants. But we as servants have to wait for the commands to proceed in what ever direction and in whatever order, the Lord deems wise.

When His people are reactive to situations rather than acting on His Words, that is when confusion and collisions tend to happen and the results are NOT what God had planned. It is not easy to just “fly around in circles” watching everything going on below or before us, yet, when we are in that holding pattern, we have a better vantage point than those on the ground. There is also an order to God’s plans, for there are those that are supposed to “land” first and accomplish what they are to do and then others follow in the wisest order set by the Holy Spirit.

Our Heavenly Father has ALWAYS been a God of order. After all, He created order out of chaos and bright light to separate the darkness. His Character hasn’t changed even the slightest, but we as impatient creatures have a tendency to want to just charge ahead, when order is the necessary circumstance for God’s perfect will to be accomplished.

As I stated, it’s not always easy to watch and not do, but even in the watching, we SHOULD be in constant communication and communion with He Who is in the “tower!” If we maintain our faith (our “fuel”) we will have the strength to stay where God wants us to stay until it is time to actually deliver what He has equipped us to deliver at the proper time.

Remember, just because we see some moving forward and doing, doesn’t mean that we are all to just jump in the pile and add our abilities. God has given us our gifts and abilities to be used at His discretion and not our own. We must never forget that He is the One Who is always in control, no matter how the situation around us looks. We take our commands and our orders from Him, for it is His wisdom that will see the job or situation accomplished according to His will.

The TRUE Church NEEDS to be stirred, but it needs to be stirred like the pilot of the plane that is in constant communication with the controller and doing exactly what the controller states. When we as the Church follow our Controller’s direction there will be a very discernable difference between the True Church of Christ Jesus and the religious organization that is trying to counterfeit the True Church!

I hope this gives you something to think AND seriously pray about in this time of turmoil in the world. God IS and ALWAYS has been in control and He KNOWS what He is doing!

Creation Groans

Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen, saying:” ‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the LORD!’ Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.” – Luke 19:37-40.

We as a people, and yes, I am speaking to those who claim to be Christians, get so wrapped up in the affairs of the world system, the local happenings, the global situations, politics, celebrities, etc., that we have a tendency to forget the rest of creation.

Now before you raise your eyebrow at me, I am not an environmental activist. I do care about the environment, but insomuch that it was given to man to care for AND to enjoy. Yes, I said enjoy, NOT abuse, but this is not an essay or lesson on that so much. I want to direct your thinking to something else, something that is all to often overlooked.

God Almighty created everything that we are able to see and perceive and even that which is beyond the scope of our natural senses. As our Heavenly Father, He set us right in the middle of all this creation. To much of the time, we admire and are in awe of that creation (as we should be) but without giving it much thought other than what science tells us. Even scientists today leave out a big part of creation due to the fact that if they can’t perceive it or quantify it, it must not exist! Yet the very science, and I’m talking hard science, not theoretical, is known to them because of the originator of science, God, Himself. He is ALL knowledge, Omniscient. But again, since the scientist who is part of the natural world cannot see, perceive or quantify, they can’t acknowledge God.

But think of this the next time you look at the Milky Way through a telescope, or view cells through a microscope; God didn’t just create ALL that there is, He also spoke into existence the very laws that science is so fond of that governs the very actions of the universe and galaxies all the way down to why the smallest cells perform as they do. We have galaxies that are ever expanding, the moon and sun rising and setting, the tides coming and going creating a filter effect that cleanses the oceans. We have forests of trees that “breathe” in carbon dioxide and give us oxygen to keep our very air breathable. I could go on and on and God did all this by speaking those laws into existence.

The earth itself is created in such a way that the magnetic fields shield us from solar radiation. The core is surrounded by a liquid, molten fluid that is continually moving through convection. The very ground that we stand upon that we perceive as solid, is floating upon that liquid. All with the laws implemented by the Lord Himself, to allow mankind to live and flourish on this same earth.

But man, in his natural wisdom has become arrogant and has substituted a lot of THEORY for facts and when they speak, scientifically, they speak as if their theories ARE facts, which they are not! They are conjecture, they are hypothesis that need to be verified, but that has never stopped most worldly scientists from expressing them, and especially theories that have become popular and traditional as fact.

But I’m not letting some Christians off the hook either. In this age we live in where God has opened up more of His knowledge to us, AND especially to His children, we still have those who refuse to believe in what is factual, believing that the Bible contradicts true science, factual, hard science, when in fact it doesn’t. They will ARGUE, just to hold on to long traditional THEORIES of Biblical interpretation, when in fact the very Bible itself tells us that “in the last days knowledge (true facts) will increase and our understanding will grow!” These Christians, and I still call them Brother and Sister, have put God Almighty into a box that their finite minds can comprehend, thus putting the awesome nature and character of God into something they can comprehend.

Instead of recognizing that we were made in the likeness of God, they have made God into their likeness and thus limited the unlimited expanse and existence of His very Nature and Character! Those who have drawn closer in an intimate way with their Heavenly Father THROUGH Christ Jesus and empowered by His Holy Spirit have come to realize, the more we come to the/a knowledge of Who He is as our Father, the less we truly do know. To some of us, that drives us even closer to Him, to get to know Him even greater and it will never end until He calls us home to be with Him where the natural, carnal nature will no longer be an interference!

Now I’ve said all that just to point something else out that most Christians don’t give thought too. We, mankind as a whole, are only a small part of God’s creation. He made all the rest of creation that we can perceive for us and for His purposes. But that creation that has been touched by mankind, has also been tainted with mankind’s sin and thus is also not what it was created to be!

Now think of this. As great as the scientists of NASA and other space agencies are, as great as the oceanographers are who have delved into the deepest regions of our oceans, they have NOT been able to keep the taint and stain of humankind from those pristine environments. Right now, at the deepest part of the oceans, the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean, almost a full seven miles deep, has garbage and waste on it’s ocean bed thanks to man’s abuse.

The Voyager missions, both 1 and 2 from the middle to late ’70s have now reached into what the scientists refer to as interstellar space. In other words, they are beyond the pull of our Sun, in the far reaches of our solar system and are now in a space beyond our solar system and they are still going. Everywhere that those spacecraft go, they take along with them, the taint and stain of mankind’s sin and corrupt every part of space that they inhabit! They could have been the most sterile objects in the universe, but they cannot be sterilized from the taint of mankind’s sinfulness.

It is no wonder then, that as each day goes by, Creation groans for release. The rest of Creation is tied in with man’s redemption and creation as a whole must realize it. I want you to carefully read and think about what the Apostle Paul wrote to the Romans. It explains a lot of what we are seeing today and should be a reminder that redemption MUST be close!

“For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.” – Romans 8:19-25.

Creation was subjected to futility along with mankind, but unlike mankind, it was NOT done willingly. Now in case you think the Apostle is speaking of mankind as the creation, you will see that he is tying creation WITH mankind’s hope for redemption in verse 21 and verse 23. The redemption of the rest of creation is tied in with the hope of salvation and redemption that we have and hope for in Christ Jesus!

My wife and her sister follow this person who keeps track of earthquakes and volcanoes all over the earth, Dutchsinse, on Facebook and we were discussing some of the things going on. Many attribute the number due to social media and the availability of instant reporting but the facts remain according to those who watch for activity like this, that there most definitely IS an increase in circumstances and those instances are actually increasing daily. The earth IS groaning.

Now here is my take on it and yes, I have been told numerous times throughout the years that I OVER spiritualize situations. Well, my contention is that there is far more going on in the spiritual realm than natural man will EVER be aware of!

Now some may put this down to judgement coming and growing and that well could be, but I want you to consider this in light of the Bible. As mankind continues to reject God as Heavenly Father and Sovereign Lord, rejecting the very truth of His existence, and as fewer and fewer are praising Him for the blessings we DO have, maybe, just maybe the rest of creation is taking mankind’s place to do the praising. For if mankind as a whole is not looking for God’s Kingdom to come, then creation, which according to the Apostle Paul is definitely looking for their redemption.

As Jesus stated in the Gospel of Luke, if man refuses to praise Him, then the very rocks, the very earth will cry out! Now before you think I’m “off my rocker,” I do believe this is all leading to the Lord’s coming back and the tribulation, which after the initial seven years will bring peace to the earth and creation as Christ Jesus takes His Throne for the next one thousand year, millennial reign. Remember, it was God who spoke into existence the very laws governing the workings of all of creation, so creation is only doing what it has been “programed” to do. But, I would like to think that as mankind refuses to give God Almighty praise through His Son, Christ Jesus, maybe, just maybe, the rest of creation will take up the chorus of praise with those few saints who are willing to join in!

Remember, according to Jesus, the way to salvation is narrow and few find it, but broad is the path to destruction. We MUST continue to pray for the lost; knowing that many will refuse the Lord’s gift doesn’t negate the fact that we must pray, but just be aware, the Lord’s Word has always been true and is ultimately FACT, not theory!

Now, I give this to you not to advance some new doctrine, but rather just to make you look at what is happening in the world and when you pray and commune with our Heavenly Father, consider all that is at stake. The whole world and the universe itself is waiting for our Redemption so that IT can also be redeemed. How amazing is that fact?!!

Of Such Is The Kingdom . . .

“Then they also brought infants to Him that He might touch them; but when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. But Jesus called them to Him and said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God. Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” – Luke 18:15-17 (also Mark 10:13-16).

“At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me. But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea.”

“Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes!” – Matthew 18:1-7.

August 5, Sue and I became Great-grandparents and what a blessing. It was a couple of days later when we greeted the little man, but once we held him, we knew beyond reservation that our family had been blessed by a tremendous miracle. He was perfect. I know, I know, it sounds so biased, but little newborns usually have misshapen heads and are all purple and such, but he was, just after a couple of days, bright and oh so alert. But then, why not, for there had been much, much prayer that had preceded his birth.

I was tremendously blessed, for when I held him, with my grandkids permission, I offered him to the Lord and was able to pray a blessing over him, my grandkids and my kids who were all gathered. Yes, this old curmudgeon wept for it was a very precious moment.

Sue and I had talked just that morning about the precious and wonderful miracle that conception is. At the moment when that egg and that sperm interact, that spark of life, the “breath of God’s Spirit” (Genesis 2:7) enters into those cells and the wonder of life begins.

We were discussing how wondrous the Bible states that God Almighty, our Heavenly Father, Who KNOWS all things, knew us before and during our development in the womb. Isaiah, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit wrote this, “Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, And He who formed you from the womb: “I am the LORD, who makes all things, Who stretches out the heavens all alone, Who spreads abroad the earth by Myself; Who frustrates the signs of the babblers, And drives diviners mad; Who turns wise men backward, And makes their knowledge foolishness; Who confirms the word of His servant, And performs the counsel of His messengers; . . .” – Isaiah 44:24-26a.

And the Prophet known to us as the Weeping Prophet, Jeremiah, stated this under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, “Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.” – Jeremiah 1:4-5.

I lay all this foundation before you to show you the wonder and the awesome significance of that point of conception, when life, human life truly begins. Now, I know what many who cannot understand the spiritual significance say and sadly they say those things in their spiritual blindness. But if natural life begins at that point of conception, then Spiritual life begins in the Mind of our Lord, God Almighty. For when the Word tells us He knows us BEFORE the very foundation of the World, it confirms what the Prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah stated under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit!

The Apostle Paul wrote it this way, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, . . .” – Ephesian 1:3-4.

Now I opened with the passages and statements of Jesus concerning the infants and little children. But I want to make it clear that in Scripture, it is talking about life even before birth as an infant. The Bible is very clear and the only way you can circumvent the truth is to deny it as truth and to reject the Living Word of God. Which is what is taking place every day in this world we live in.

Now I want to make it clear that we should be praying for the souls of those who are willing to abort a life that is KNOWN to God Almighty even before conception, for the Bible tells us that there is NO sin that cannot be forgiven except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 12:31-32).

We do not have to agree or condone with the sin, but we DO have to pray for the sinner; AND we can speak out, in fact it is our duty, to acknowledge sin as sin. But we have to make sure that we let those who practice any type of sin, to know that redemption can and will only be found in the gift of Jesus Christ’s shed blood given for all who accept it.

Remember this, God knows the little ones that never make it to the light of day and who are aborted before their birth. He is not ignorant of who they are since He KNOWS them before they were even formed in the womb! Those spirits reside in His presence continually. Now I cannot tell you how Heaven will be with the spirits of all these innocents, because that is one secret not shared in the Scriptures, but I can tell you that when you consider the WHOLE counsel of God in His Word, the Kingdom of God abounds with those innocent spirits! What a glorious reunion we will have when we get to see and meet ALL of those who have made it to the Heavenly Kingdom!

We can weep for the little ones who don’t ever see the light of day, but they are in the presence of the TRUE Light. The ones we should be truly weeping for are the mothers who have justified in their hearts the taking of those little lives without repenting or recognizing their sin, which again, CAN be forgiven! I don’t mean for this to come across cold-hearted, but they have lived in the natural and have witnessed the “light of day,” but the darkness of eternity awaits those who do not repent and eternity is far, far longer than the short time we have here in the natural.

So yes, we need to pray, but we also need to remember that when people say that miracles no longer take place, they do not understand the concept or the depth of what a true miracle is. If you are blessed as we are, you get to watch that miracle grow in not just natural strength and knowledge, but in spiritual strength and Godly wisdom as well! I can tell you for a fact, miracles still DO happen in wondrous ways!

Remember, the Kingdom of Heaven is made up of those who can regain that innocence through the abiding Holy Spirit. That is what being spiritually born-again is all about. In closing, I would like to leave a quote attributed to Greg Laurie, the protégé of Calvary Chapel’s Chuck Smith:

“If you are born once, you will die twice. If you are born twice, you will die once. By “born once,” I mean the physical birth. By “born twice,” I mean a physical birth as well as a spiritual birth in which you are born again, spiritually putting your faith in Christ.”

There is of course a natural death, but to those who have not been spiritually born-again, there IS, most assuredly a second, eternal death. If you are a True Christian, pray for those whose spiritual eyes have NOT been opened. Remember, God STILL accomplishes miracles!

3 John, Verse 12-14

3 John 1:12-14, “Demetrius has a good testimony from all, and from the truth itself. And we also bear witness, and you know that our testimony is true. I had many things to write, but I do not wish to write to you with pen and ink; but I hope to see you shortly, and we shall speak face to face. Peace to you. Our friends greet you. Greet the friends by name.”

Here we see the close of John’s third letter and the similarities to the closing of the second. He has more to say, which he would rather do in a face to face, more personal way. As to the man Demetrius, it is common legend that he was most likely the one entrusted to carry this letter, written by the Beloved Apostle to John’s dear friend Gaius.

What is interesting is all that John implies in this simple verse. Remember, going back to the last lesson, he had a lot of negative and warning, to say about the self-proclaimed and corrupt leader Diotrephes. By contrast, he has little to say about Demetrius but what positives he DID have to say certainly outshone the negatives of the corruption of Diotrephes.

“Demetrius has a good testimony from all, and from the truth itself.” This man, unlike the former has a GOOD testimony AND from the truth itself. Now don’t just read that statement, think about it. Other people, his fellow man have great things to say about Demetrius and in stating that others have given this testimony of this man, John more or less personifies truth by adding the end of his sentence by saying “and from truth itself.” Other people and truth itself testify to the goodness of this man. I read somewhere where it stated, “if truth could speak, if it had a voice, it would speak on behalf of this man, Demetrius.” Now think of it, that is a pretty high compliment and especially in light of such an utter warning concerning the self-appointed leader, Diotrephes. John has a real tendency to contrast light and darkness, truth and falsehood and he does so in truly practical ways. He doesn’t just teach a Spiritual Principle or concept, but when readily available also gives a practical example as in this case.

This kind of example just elevates his instruction to his friend Gaius when he told him what we discussed in last lesson; “Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God.” – 3 John 1:11. It truly is one thing to relay a Spiritual Principle but quite another to actually give a real-world example of one that exemplifies what he is teaching.

Now concerning Gaius, you can also imagine, with a recommendation like was given to Demetrius that, if he was the bearer of the letter, Gaius would have most definitely opened his home to him, given Gaius’ penchant for hospitality anyway.

Now one final thought concerning Demetrius in regard to John’s personification of the truth. The late evangelist and teacher, Frank Binford Hole (1874-1964) has been attributed to saying this about this passage:

“Note, it is not that he (Demetrius) bore witness to the truth, but that the truth bore witness to him. Demetrius was not the standard by which truth was tested. The truth was the standard by which HE was tested; and having been so tested, he stood approved.” [1] (bold emphasis, mine).

Now I want to make one final comparison; in as much as 2 John towards the end emphasizes the need to refuse hospitality to those teaching false doctrines (2 John verses 10-11), the Beloved Apostle, in this letter, is urging continued hospitality to those who are carrying the message of truth. Again, remember one of the main themes of this letter was the NEED for hospitality given to those servants who endeavor to carry the good news to others.

Today, we may NOT be able to open our homes to traveling ministries (not every one can, and it may not be the most comfortable for them), but we CAN consider creative ways in which to make their stay in our towns and cities more comfortable and less stressful when it comes to them having to be concerned about finances, meals, traveling about and such.

These last two letters may seem short and to a degree, inconsequential, but when you look beyond the text at what the Beloved Apostle is teaching in each one, and you recognize the implications of the Spiritual Principles he is teaching, we are blessed beyond measure to have them included into the Biblical Canon.

These are letters of practicality that have transcended time and are still relevant even in today’s age. Fellowship, face to face, greeting one another in love and meeting the needs of those who are willing to follow a calling that all of us do not have is an important part of keeping the fabric, the sinew and all the other things that keep the overall Body of Christ strong and functioning.

I believe that soon, very soon indeed, the Body of Christ will have to start stretching its spiritual muscles as it were, for the last day’s push to win souls to Christ before His feet touch the clouds and calls His children home, is very, very close indeed.

In closing the last of these wonderful letters to the True Church of God, I want to say this again from the Gospel of Luke, “Then they (WE) will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” – Luke 21:27-28. (bold emphasis, mine).

If My People . . .

I was going to sit down here at the keyboard and finish up my expository teaching on the Letters of John, but I have a “pet-peeve!” Oh, oh, here we go again. Brother Roland has something he’s gonna take out on us and all we want is a teaching from the Lord!

I’m sorry; and here again I have to preface, I truly DO love my Brothers and Sisters in the Lord. This is why I DO what I do and it is why the Lord called me. He knows my heart and my love for His people. But I have to ask, what is wrong with His preachers and teachers who are spreading misinformation using Scripture; and then thinking it is going to cure America’s (or other nations of the world) ills and the things that have beset it. Yes, America is going through bad times, but a BIG yes, God IS in control and always has been!

Here goes. I’m AM going to give you a lesson in the Old Covenant and the New Covenant; something today’s preachers and teachers should be doing from behind the pulpit!

“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” – 2 Chronicles 7:14. Taken directly from the New King James Version of the Bible. And now for you die-hard King James supporters who believe any other version is sacrilege (I’ve done that lesson so many times already), here’s directly from that; “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” – 2 Chronicles 7:14. ALMOST identical in the wording, but you tell me if the Spirit of that Scripture is the same! I’m here to tell you it is, so now can we move ahead with our lesson?

In the NKJV, the verse starts of with a small (i) showing it is a continuation of an ongoing thought. In the KJV they ended the previous thought and started the verse with a capital (I) as if it is another thought. Here’s the rub, you have to take it in either version in the context with which it was given! I’m sorry for those of you who don’t like Scriptures repeated in a lesson, but here is the WHOLE context (sorry, but in the NKJV) as found in 2 Chronicles 7:11-22:

Thus Solomon finished the house of the LORD and the king’s house; and Solomon successfully accomplished all that came into his heart to make in the house of the LORD and in his own house.

Then the LORD appeared to Solomon by night, and said to him: “I have heard your prayer, and have chosen this place for Myself as a house of sacrifice. When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people, if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place. For now I have chosen and sanctified this house, that My name may be there forever; and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually. As for you, if you walk before Me as your father David walked, and do according to all that I have commanded you, and if you keep My statutes and My judgments, then I will establish the throne of your kingdom, as I covenanted with David your father, saying, ‘You shall not fail to have a man as ruler in Israel.’ “But if you turn away and forsake My statutes and My commandments which I have set before you, and go and serve other gods, and worship them, then I will uproot them from My land which I have given them; and this house which I have sanctified for My name I will cast out of My sight, and will make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples. And as for this house, which is exalted, everyone who passes by it will be astonished and say, ‘Why has the LORD done thus to this land and this house?’ “Then they will answer, ‘Because they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and embraced other gods, and worshiped them and served them; therefore He has brought all this calamity on them.'”

Yes, I combined the verses with the appropriate paragraphs for ease of reading, AND I boldened and italicized the verse that everyone is using out of context! So tell me, did it change the Spirit of the text in anyway? I’ll take that as a rhetorical NO!

Do you preachers and teachers and you members of the Body of Christ, all, remember the difference between the Old and New Covenant? Do you remember that historically and spiritually speaking, God, our Father took the Jewish people to be His chosen people and set them within a land He promised to them? A land by the way that He has planned all along to use as the place of His earthly Throne during the Millennial Reign when Jesus Christ sits upon that very Throne?

I hope that you realize that the ONLY nation that God, our Father associates with His chosen people is that nation that is known today as Israel. Remember, Israel has not recognized Jesus as their true Messiah yet, so they are still TRYING to live under the Old Covenant Law! Yet, they are STILL God’s chosen people; it is just that due to the Messiah’s sacrifice and the faith of Abraham that us Gentiles share, that we have been ADOPTED through faith into that branch of God’s chosen people. BUT, it is that very faith that has given rise to the New Covenant of which we now belong as God’s people. It does not make the Jewish people any less God’s chosen people still, it just means that if they live by the Law, that is how they will be judged! AND, Jesus is coming again to Redeem those born-again spiritually, but also the remnant of God’s chosen people who will THEN recognize Him as the TRUE Messiah.

God’s spiritual children, adopted into the house of Abraham by faith and by being spiritually born-again are found all over the world in every nation and country. America is NOT the only place. Yes, America (and I mean the United States) was founded on Biblical principles, but even then, though we were known for our “Christianity” in the past, we were never God’s chosen people associated with the land. God’s chose (spiritual) children, as stated live in every country.

Now, let’s delve into some other interesting aspects. We live in under a New Covenant, a dispensation or era established by Grace through faith in the gift and sacrifice of Christ Jesus. How does this sound in light of that: “if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways,”

In ancient Israel, the Prophets were CONSTANTLY sent to give a message, from the Lord, to HIS people, to turn from their wickedness and idolatry and back to the LAW, the Covenant, established between Him and them! Their plight and the plight of their “promised” land was always tied to their obedience.

Today, those of us born-again, are NOT under the Covenant of the Law but under the Covenant of Grace! Our plight is not tied to the land, but to our individual and spiritual liberties in the Lord! We now live in an age when many within our nation have rejected God outright and have taken the very Biblical principles with which this nation was founded and have discarded them. It is NOT God’s PEOPLE that are doing that, but unregenerate, unrepentant and CARNAL man that is doing the wickedness!

Now hear this and remember it; if people are living wickedly, they are NOT God’s people! Not today, where our sins have been washed by the Blood of the Lamb, Christ Jesus! When we do sin, and we still do (it is a constant struggle between the flesh and the spirit) we KNOW with full assurance we have an ADVOCATE, an Intercessor with the Father, Whom we can go too and repent because we ARE recognized as His NO MATTER WHAT LAND WE LIVE IN!!

The Old Covenant is not non-essential either, but the Law has been fulfilled in Christ Jesus! Jesus stated this: “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.” – Matthew 5:17-18. That Law, WAS and is fulfilled in Christ Jesus! Now we are not bound to it naturally, but rather spiritually for we have been spiritually renewed through Christ and that is why the Spirit of the Word gives life and the letter still breeds death!

So then, since we are NOT under the Old Covenant there is a new and better way to pray and THAT is what we should be teaching the Body of Christ, and believe me, I am having a hard time in believing this has to be taught again. Before I tell you, I’m going to give you another Scripture and if you ARE a child of God, I hope you take it to heart; “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” – Hebrews 5:12-14.

I’m sorry if a Scripture like that is hard, but come on, we are way past the time when the Church, the TRUE Church, the Body of Christ should be leading! But now for that BETTER and more effectual way of praying as taught by Jesus:

“In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” – Matthew 6:9-13.

Now again, understand this; this is NOT the prayer though tradition has made it one, but rather it is the MODEL, the pattern of how we should be praying and I want to accentuate what is most effectual and important under this New Covenant in which we are living:

“Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.” When it comes to the ills and problems of our nations, ANY nation, we should be praying to God, our Heavenly Father in Jesus Name, in Jesus’ authority and we should be praying for God’s perfect will to be fulfilled!! We know that according to the Word of God, our Lord HAS a perfect plan for mankind and He has graciously forewarned us of what MUST happen and to what end it will lead. God is and ALWAYS has been in total control. If our eyes are constantly on what we see around us, and not on the Father above, it is no wonder there are Christians, who should know better, I might add, who are panicking and doing so needlessly and with a lack of faith!

When we KNOW that God IS in control and when we believe His Word and realize He has given us the secrets of His plans for mankind and for His Kingdom, we should be praying in that direction and NOT that things go back to normal or go back to the way we have been accustomed!

Let me tell you how you should be directing your prayers, and especially with all the wickedness add evil “coming out of the woodwork” as it were. Where fires and destruction of property and vandalism and anarchy reign, we SHOULD be praying for the leaders of those areas and we should be praying that God will save their souls and that God would bring TRUE revival fires through the Holy Spirit! I guarantee you, that if revival fires get hold of peoples hearts, then natural fires of property and such will have no place to take root and grow! But we have to PRAY for that in mind and we have to be in agreement that no matter how it looks, God’s perfect will for our nation and the nations of the world will go forward!

In closing; if you are more interested in getting back to the comfort and peace and tranquility of past times, then you are not looking forward with spiritual eyes to what God wants. He WANTS Christ Jesus to be on the Throne while the enemy is chained and bound until He gathers ALL who will accept His will and He can make a brand NEW heaven and earth! That IS God’s will and that is what we should be praying for!

So please, as a preacher/teacher of the Word, I implore you that before you start spreading a teaching that no longer applies to our dispensation or situation in the world, read AND study your Word and ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten, which He will do most readily!

Pray for our leaders, pray for the people of this nation and most definitely pray for salvation of the lost and those who ARE walking in wickedness, through the anointed fires of true spiritual revival! Amen and AMEN!

One World Order

Believe it or not, I have a lot of Christian Brothers and Sisters, whom I love dearly who for some reason are in panic mode, with all that is going on! Oh for the most part, they might say the right things, but some of their actions and posts on social media, belie much of what they are saying.

Yes, I DO know the Scriptures relating to those weaker in the faith and those of a faith not quite mature yet, but some of those I am talking about SHOULD know better. It’s easy to have faith when everything is going the way you want it and life is routine and comfortable and you can watch the world go by without concerns of it touching you, but when it “LOOKS” like it might affect you, then it’s a different story altogether.

The wisest man in the world once wrote this: “That which has been is what will be, That which is done is what will be done, And there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which it may be said, “See, this is new”? It has already been in ancient times before us. There is no remembrance of former things, Nor will there be any remembrance of things that are to come By those who will come after.” – Ecclesiastes 1:9-11.

The point in referring to that Scripture is to let you know that here it is 2020 A.D. and we are not yet destroyed. Why, because God Almighty, the Creator of All that ever was or ever will be is STILL on His Throne and in control. And despite what some believe, He didn’t create everything and the laws that govern all things (scientific laws) and then sit back as if watching a favorite soap-opera to see which way His new creation will go!

There was and is a purpose to His creating all that is and putting us right smack in the middle of it and He has not withdrawn His Hand once from the events of human-kind. The reason is, He is letting mankind decide for themselves if they want a relationship with the One Who created them and the choice is totally that of the individual. But, and here’s the catch, there is a time limit on when you can check the box marked YES, I want to be a part! We don’t know the time. Even Jesus said to His disciples that He and the angels don’t know the time, only the Father in Heaven. Yet He DID tell us to look out for certain things to take place and then we would know that those who check the box YES, would be aware their redemption was very, very close. (Luke 21:28).

So many love to remember their Bible stories from childhood as if they were nothing more than a myth, yet forgetting the moral or significance of the tale. Take for instance the story of the Tower of Babel. Chapter 10 in the Book of Genesis tells us what became of Noah and his sons and the generations after the flood, all this leading into chapter 11 and the story of what has become known as the “Tower of Babel.” By the way, the term Babel has nothing to do with Babylon but rather what happened to man’s language and speech in this story.

Here is the gist of that story from the Bible’s own words:

“Now the whole earth had one language and one speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there. Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar. And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”

But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. And the LORD said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them. “Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city. Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.” – Genesis 11:1-9.

Now before you start to think that God was just mean and vindictive, let me explain to you what the problem was. It’s right there in the text. “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.” Let’s make a name for ourselves, and let’s make something that will reach into the heavens.

Mankind has just been recently saved through a flood that wiped out all but eight people and though we have no idea the population at the time of Babel, we do know many generations had passed. It would have had to be for enough people to come together and state this purpose.

But what was the problem? Surely God isn’t adverse to people building structures or cities! When you just READ the Bible, it is so easy to miss things, but when you ask questions and then try to find the answer in the text, you are delving into the SPIRIT of the matter and not just reading the letter! So what was the problem?

It was the pride and arrogance. Instead of retaining in their hearts the salvation God Almighty afforded them through the flood, it was, “Let’s take it upon ourselves to reach up towards God Himself and make a name for ourselves, lest something happen and we be scattered all over.”

They weren’t trusting in God for anything, so soon after the flood. They were reverting back to trusting in themselves to accomplish something that caused even the greatest angel created to fall. I would venture to say, that Satan himself was whispering into their ears, “You don’t need God to reach heaven! You can do it yourself and then you can take credit for it all yourselves.” Because that is just what they attempted to do.

Now here is where I want to drop in some spiritual advice and principles. IN THE BEGINNING: “Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; . . .” – Genesis 1:26.

We were created in His LIKENESS. Not in the way He looks, God is a Spirit (John 4:24), thus we were to be a spiritual creation with attributes, characteristics and a nature LIKE God’s, but not to the full extent of Himself. Thus He formed us of the same material as the earth He created for His planned creation but He breathed a portion of His Spirit into us to create in us that likeness. (Genesis 2:7).

God, our Heavenly Father, Whom we tend to take after in spiritual ways, is a Creator, thus it only stands to reason that the man that He breathed His Spirit into, would have a tendency and desire to be creative. God knew this, God was not against that, nor is He against it today. BUT – where man differs is that God is Holy, Pure and Undefiled in any way. Man has a choice and ability to be Holy, but due to sin entering the world (to offer man the ability to choose) oftentimes man chooses NOT to be Holy. However, this does not negate some of his abilities, such as wanting to create and to gain and pursue more knowledge, etcetera.

Those who chose to build a tower to the heavens, to make a name for themselves rather than honor the name of God Who redeemed them from destruction through the flood. They would ascend to the heavens, however long it took, and they would do it on their own.

Now understand something. From the very beginning God, our Father has had a plan for His own Kingdom, governed by Christ Jesus. That was from the very beginning. Even in the Garden of Eden right before Adam and Eve where expelled, God promised this would be the case. This Kingdom would be for those who CHOSE to honor and worship God for Who He is and not forced as the world’s kings like to do.

Christ Jesus prepared the way for us to enter the Father’s Kingdom, it is our choice whether we want to be a part of it or not. Anyone, any people’s who choose a way other than the one ORDAINED by God Himself, is trying to create their own “heaven” or paradise without God. There can be no such thing, no matter how accomplished man THINKS he is. He will NEVER have the power, knowledge or wisdom that God, Himself has. It will always be just a small very minute “likeness” of the real thing!

So, God knew the heart of man. He knew the arrogance and pride and he knew man would at least continue to attempt what he wanted rather than what God wanted, no matter what and since it was NOT God’s time or place, He did just what they feared the most; He scattered them over the earth and confounded their speech so that they were no longer just one language. Do you ever wonder why all over the world there are ancient structures still partially standing that have so many similarities and yet are different in their own ways? God didn’t confound their knowledge, just the way they communicated, think about it. God still retains control of His creation.

Why do you, the readers, think there have been empires rise and fall due to wars and such. They war with other nations to make those nations subject to themselves. Always trying to conquer the world as it were. But they are only able to go so far before something hinders their progress!

So here we are now, in the age of technology and advancement (remember, nothing new under the sun) and yet we have peoples of all nations willing to give up their sovereignty and their individuality, why? Because we can govern ourselves and be united as one and make a name for ourselves and we don’t need God! Arrogance and pride! Don’t forget, history just loves to repeat itself and why not; there are those who refuse to acknowledge the truth in history and as in the world we are living today, there are actually movements to try and ERASE history. Why would someone want to even attempt that? Here’s the answer; to keep people blinded and thus subservient to their wants and demands.

That old say, “Knowledge is power,” is true and well known even to those that want to rob others of knowledge! But God’s children have a knowledge that can’t and won’t be erased because our Heavenly Father has made His plans known to His children. What we see going on has been prophesied through the Scriptures and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. There WILL be an attempt to establish a one world order, but it will be weaker than any empire that ever came before it and it will also be the shortest lived according to Scripture.

You see, this kingdom won’t just try to create its own heaven, but will actually declare war against God and His children. Now understand something; we have always had persecution for believing in Christ Jesus to one degree or another, but this will be like nothing we have ever seen before and the ground work is right now coming to the surface.

According to Scripture, God’s Holy Spirit filled children will not suffer God’s wrath though we might suffer some of the persecution, but it is the same Holy Spirit within each of us that is keeping the final foundation of the one world order at bay. When that is removed from the earth, the Anti-Christ and his false prophet will be able to step to the forefront and deceive and amaze those that were blind to the truth. But here’s the thing; there will be those who WILL remember others prophesying and predicting what they are going through and there will be a remnant that WILL acknowledge Christ Jesus to there own death. God ALWAYS has a remnant that will be true to Him, for you see it throughout the whole of Scripture!

So, as a Christian, a child of God’s, who has been forewarned and also given assurance of His Hand upon His chosen, why are some panicking today when God has promised over and over and over again to take care of us? If you believe the Bible and the lessons that God has left for us in the text, you will know that He will not let His children starve or go without clothes. It doesn’t mean things might not get a bit uncomfortable compared to how we have had it, but it means our NEEDS WILL be met by God Himself!

We are in a time when we will have to grow up and mature in the spiritual maybe a bit faster than was necessary in the past, but you trust in the Holy Spirit to take care of that for you. You pray, or communicate with the Lord on a daily basis and ask Him what He wants you to do for this day and don’t worry about tomorrow. You open your Bible, even if it is to read just a few Scriptures at a time and you ask the Lord to reveal the Spiritual Truths behind what you are reading and He will NEVER let you down in a request like that.

Then you take that, your prayers, the Word of God, your faith and you spread THAT and not fear, doubt and panic to your loved ones and your neighbors. THAT is how the Body of Christ will grow in strength! When the Body of Christ is stronger, than we as individual members of that Body will gain even greater spiritual strength. Comfort one another with the Word of God.

I will tell you that I went through a similar thing during the year 2000 when everyone was panicking about Y2K, which turned out to be a dud! Big time. Yet, I witnessed peers, whom showed great faith in the past, turn to mush when it came to the possibilities of what MIGHT happen. They took it upon themselves to prepare for something they had no idea would take place or not! Literally, they had more faith in the predictions of Y2K at the time than they did in the Lord’s ability to care for them and I have NEVER forgotten that experience or lesson.

If you are a Christian, it is one thing to be warned by prophesy and dreams, but it is quite another thing to become fearful and panic and decide that YOU yourself will have to take care of tomorrow! You have no idea what tomorrow will hold individually, but as a Child of God, He has PROMISED to look after His children.

Now, do you have faith more so in the predictions of what tomorrow holds, or do you have faith in the Father’s promises to care for you as His child? Only YOU can answer that!!!

“Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

“Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near–at the doors!” – Matthew 24:29-33.

3 John, Verse 9-11

3 John 1:9-11, “I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among them, does not receive us. Therefore, if I come, I will call to mind his deeds which he does, prating against us with malicious words. And not content with that, he himself does not receive the brethren, and forbids those who wish to, putting them out of the church. Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God.”

Oh my! To be at the brunt of the Beloved Apostle and acknowledged Elder to the Church at that time. Can you say “upstart!” Yet in his continuing discourse with his beloved friend, Gaius, the Apostle chooses to use this as a lesson in what is right and wrong; to put it a bit more bluntly, what is good and what is evil.

Evidently, the Apostle sent a letter to the church and it was either intercepted or this man, Diotrephes, took it upon himself as leader to decide whether it was worth their time or not. Now just imagine, this was back in approximately 90 A.D.. The church was still in its infancy, people were meeting in groups where ever they could to learn and to worship the Lord corporately. Even that early on, there were rivalries for leadership. Remember also, John was most likely the last Apostle to have known Jesus Christ before His death and Resurrection! Yet, to some, even back then, it didn’t elicit any respect for his knowledge and wisdom.

If you can read these accounts and look around, not just the world, but locally where you each live, and not realize that the Bible is ALIVE and relevant even today, I would like to talk to you about being spiritually reborn!

Evidently this man looked upon himself as a self-appointed dictator, deciding which direction the church under his control should go and it didn’t matter, for what ever reason, the experience and wisdom that others displayed. He definitely demonstrated a prideful arrogance, an inflated ego to be sure, apparently jealousy that others garnered more respect, all for what he apparently, for whatever reason, he considered his right. It is apparent from these brief comments from John that this man had forgotten that the “church” was established by Christ Jesus and that Jesus IS the head of the church and that the Holy Spirit is the Representative of Christ to the Church!

We can only assume that his pretext for behaving that way was in the excuse that he was contending for the truth; which by all apparent pretexts was an outright lie! For him to refuse the Apostle and other brethren traveling as well, was actually doing untold harm to the early church. It is obvious that when John spoke of false teachers and wolves in sheep’s clothing in other Scripture, he had someone like this man in mind.

As many of you who have followed my teachings over the years, you know that I, with my wife had vowed to the Lord to go where He wanted us to go and to learn all that we could from where He placed us and the Lord, took us at our word. We have been involved serving in many churches and learning. As I have stated before, learning, and especially when the Holy Spirit is involved can come in a couple of dramatic ways. You can learn how to do things the right way under the mentorship of someone led and listening to the Holy Spirit, AND, you can learn how NOT to do things under the leadership whose ideas are such that it fits into the cliché, “it is either my way or the highway.”

Let me tell you something; I respect every servant of the Lord who has had a formal education and yet I wouldn’t trade all I learned for a formal education. It is not that I am better learned, for I am not, but what I have learned has been based on real-world experience, the leading of the Holy Spirit and lots and lots of questions to Him AND prayer! We have had to rely so much upon the Holy Bible as our textbook and because of it, though my memorization skills are below par, my application of the Word is based on real-world learning. We have been under people very much like this Diotrephes and when we asked the Lord to let us remove ourselves from their “ministries” it was not until the Holy Spirit Himself gave us leave. But we learned, oh how we learned. Maybe that is why, this letter from the Beloved Apostle strikes home so much.

Sadly, due to time, apathy in the church organizations and the rise of political correctness and the misuse of Scriptures such as Matthew 7:1, “Judge not, that you be not judged,” the proliferation of this type of behavior is very prevalent in many of today’s churches. So many of these “personalities” forget that their ministry is a SERVICE to the Lord AND to others. They are not, “high and lifted up” above the sheep, but rather, they need to remember that they need to learn first from the Master, the Great Shepherd, before they can serve in the capacity of teaching (feeding) others.

A true shepherd must be firm, yes indeed, but he must temper that firmness with gentleness, kindness, compassion, mercy and graciousness. He must also approach others with the right motive; that is, is the motive coming from a love for others with the hope for each with an eternal objective, or is it with the motive of making sure they follow your set of rules. The motive in your heart WILL come out in the way you approach situations. Now, admittedly since so much is done in print and in social media today, sometimes the motive is obscured in the text, but if it follows Scriptural guidelines, then the SPIRIT should come forth as opposed to just the LETTER.

Our example should always be Christ Jesus. God’s own Son, Who was with Him from the Beginning, the Word, made flesh to dwell among men. The Bible says that everything that was made was made by the Word, yet He didn’t come down to stand on a pedestal above everyone else. He made Himself to be lower than Who He truly was to teach that very same thing. A true shepherd, called to serve the sheep of the Lord, has no business placing themselves on a pedestal ABOVE the sheep! Yes, an under-shepherd called by the Great shepherd must teach, must feed the sheep, but not to lord or master anything over them, but to lead them by example and word into truth.

Diotrephes either forgot that or didn’t know it from the start, but rather seen an opportunity in this new and growing “religion” to make a mark or to carve out a spot for himself and no one, no matter the experience or knowledge was going to tell him any different.

Now notice, according to the Apostle, this man didn’t just REFUSE other true believers, but he excommunicated his own people, as it were, from his church if others did receive these other traveling ministers and teachers! What other, than a self-styled dictator is that?! It appeared that he was exceptionally power-hungry, mad with keeping control of things within the “church.” John even goes so far to say that this man was openly MALICIOUS with his speech towards those who were called and others in authority! Because of social media and the use of camera-phones and such, we see this very thing happening all too often all around us.

Yet the Apostle makes it clear, that if he is able to travel and visit his friend Gaius, he will most certainly remember this other “upstart” and more or less remind him of his place! These types of people do NOT like to be confronted openly and especially with the Word of God. They have no excuses and no place to hide behind their lies and deceit. Their power or what they perceive as power comes from doing things in secret and in the dark and especially with others who have the same agenda. Their continuing in what they surmise as power continues in the form of fear and intimidation. Isn’t it amazing, as I bring it up often lately, that even after two-thousand years, human nature has NOT evolved even a little. Now I say that meaning, without the creative power of the Holy Spirit to make us a new creation.

Here is where John uses that example as a lesson to all readers and it is a confirmation to other Scriptures that God, through His Holy Spirit can turn anything into something good for the believer. “Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God.” He who does evil has not seen God. In other words, he has absolutely no idea Who God truly is! True believers do and it is evident in what they do as a form of loving to one another and even to those who despise them.

In this letter, John gives us two extremes and there is no doubt which is which. Gaius, whose life is actually based in service to others and especially to those doing the Lord’s work, and Diotrephes, who desires the spotlight all to himself, refusing to even acknowledge those doing the Lord’s work, all under the guise of being “religious.” Again, I have to say it, how like what we see so much today. Big, mega-ministries, and I use the term “ministries” lightly, always wanting more, more people, more money, more power, more prestige, all in the NAME of “religious” works, but all the while instead of sending out, instead of encouraging others in good works, instead of sending out to make disciples, bring them in so I can make disciples! Yet they hold up the same Bible you and I read and try to emulate, they say some of the same “Christianese” speak that we use in our conversations about our Lord, yet always with a twist, or emphasis on more, more, more! And sadly that more is hardly or ever about more souls in the Kingdom of God.

To some today, some of this just seems normal. There are so many denominations, so many independent churches or religious organizations, how is one to know what is true and what isn’t?

We know from the Word of God, a changed heart, a changed and reborn spirit, results in changed behavior. Maybe not immediately, as the Holy Spirit changes people gently, but there is a change. No more is a born-again person always thinking about just themselves. They start to consider and thing about others. That is the indication of the spirit of man being changed by Something greater than themselves. The “religious” person will talk the talk, but their actions, their lifestyle will reflect no difference.

I have used this Scripture so much and here again, even though a “religious” person might be saying all the right things, they can’t keep it up for long, for what a person TRULY loves, that is what they will want to talk about and there is a VAST difference between religious things and the deeper things of the spiritual.

Now again, really look at what this Scripture is saying and especially in the light of what the Apostle John has revealed so far in this letter:

“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” – Luke 6:45.

What is the treasure in your heart? What is the motive behind what you do? It WILL display fruit; good fruit or rotten, evil fruit. It is a Spiritual Principle that cannot be denied. Those who have served the Lord for years will always recognize the truth in Luke’s Scripture.

Are we, those of us who claim to be Christians, true followers of the teachings AND examples of Jesus Christ; are we being only religious, or has something changed deep within causing us a love for one another to grow and a desire to learn more spiritually? Only the individual and God, the Father can TRULY answer that, but, our actions might give a hint!

Next post we will begin with 3 John verse 12.

Straining Out Gnats

“Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!” – Matthew 23:25.

My wife and I usually have our coffee early on and we talk about the latest things going on and how they relate to the Bible and Bible prophecies made by the Lord and His disciples. We have both been discussing the “smoke-screen” that this COVID-19 political (as opposed to health) scam has been in impacting daily lives all over the U.S. and indeed the world. This message was really inspired by her and the talks we have been having.

First, let me say that yes COVID-19 is real, it is a real viral condition, but though this strain is new, it has been around in the form of the flu in one way or another. So what makes this one so different? The massive deaths, you say? The world-wide spread, thus the “pandemic” you say?

Come on people, as a Pastor and one who loves the Lord and His people, our God gave you independent brains to think things out for yourselves and the gift of discernment to differentiate between spiritual truth and falsehood! I don’t mean to come across as rude, but I have witnessed some far-fetched ideas and things from others claiming to be “servants” of the Lord.

Yes, people are getting sick. But they are also getting better with stronger immune systems. People are dying, yes, but they are mostly those that already have compromised immune systems, just like how the yearly flu causes deaths in those susceptible. Just because the government agencies today wish to inflate the statistics, (yes, the truth has come out), doesn’t mean those stats are the truth and yet, so many accept them as truth and in fact the media AND liberal social media sites continue to push those falsehoods! In fact, according to statistics I provided to my followers on Facebook a month back, the flu season between 2017 and 2018 was far worse than anything we have seen from COVID-19 today! What them makes this so different?

The media and the politicians, mainly the liberal politicians but there are even conservatives that see a chance to pursue their agendas using this as a political smoke-screen. Why, Brother Roland, that’s a pretty negative thing to say about a country that has been such a blessing! Negative or not, the truth is found to those who choose to open their eyes and look for it.

Now I want you to look at this popular, well-known Scripture and understand in the spiritual context with which it was given, “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” – John 8:32. What is the Apostle saying when quoting Jesus? There are people all over the world who know the Lord, intimately, and yet are still enslaved to the nations and governments in which they live. Yes, in the natural. But not so in the spiritual!

Look at the context in which this was recorded;

Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can you say, ‘You will be made free’?” Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” – John 8:31-36.

Jesus is clearly speaking in spiritual terms and in fact, the Jews He was speaking too, could not fathom the spiritual implication, but kept referring to His words in the natural. He actually chastised or admonished them because of their lack of spiritual insight.

Now I don’t want you to miss an important distinction here. In verse 32, Jesus says “the truth will MAKE you free.” In verse 36, He says “if (when) the Son MAKES you free, you shall be free indeed.” Jesus is literally coming out and telling the Jews, that He IS truth! Therefore, if you have Jesus Christ abiding within, you HAVE the TRUTH abiding within you!

This is why the world, and those who have friends who have not been “born-again” cannot recognize the truth for what it is. This is why those that are unsaved, will look at a Christian, a true Christian, and say they are just conspiracy nuts. Yet, the Lord will ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS, lead His children to sources of the truth where the dark cannot hide it!

But here’s the thing; COVID-19 is NOT the danger. It has been blown out of proportion for a reason. It was actually let loose upon the world to start instituting the liberal agendas that are worldwide.

Before I go on, let me state this again; if you have a compromised immune system and especially in the areas of respiratory problems, then you NEED to walk in wisdom and “common sense,” and not take necessary chances, but I DO say this not just concerning COVID-19 but any strain of flu as well! The flu kills more people every year, BUT, the media AND the politicians have not made a big, day-to-day spectacle of it. The regular flu, does not garner the headlines and attention of COVID-19! Notice, everyone is focused on that title, COVID-19. By doing that, rather than admitting it is a virulent strain of the flu, they are making it more horrific every time it is mentioned; again, a smoke-screen! But why?

There are liberal leaders who are doing things behind the scenes while everyone is focused not just on COVID-19, but on our response to it, our responsibility to one another, whether we truly care for fellow man or what ever. While we are debating the merits of something that comes and goes each and every year (the flu), because the media (which is owned and paid for by liberals), is keeping each and everyone’s focus centered on that AND keeping everyone divided into camps of compliance or non-compliance!

My wife and I and many of my peers have been praying now for a very long time, and it started with the political fiasco in our nation and several others, that the Lord would bring to light those things that have been done in secret, in the dark. When we prayed for that and things started coming out, we had no idea how widespread God would take the sincerity of those prayers! Yet, just as things were starting to be revealed in MANY countries, all of a sudden, we had an almost instant pandemic on our hands and those involved in trying to keep things secret and IN the dark are telling everyone that we should be concerned with dying from COVID-19.

Let me tell you this to those of you who don’t know my background; though I am a minister, a servant of the Lord, I have always had a career with which to pay my bills and to live on. I have never taken money for ministry except for a brief stint, a couple of years, as Assistant Pastor at an Arizona Calvary Chapel. Even then it was more of a stipend than an actual salary. But, for a while after that, though I had been involved in Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Appliance Service for years, I decided to drive long-haul truck for a while.

Through that trucking experience I witnessed and experienced a whole other mission field, but that is not the point I’m wanting to make. I drove mainly refrigerated trailers, hauling meat and temperature regulated produce and such until I quit long-haul and started hauling sulfuric acid for the mines in Arizona. But something I learned about the trucking industry that not everyone is familiar with. When there is a major catastrophe or situation within our cities and the coroner’s office and the morgue becomes overrun, they may have to rent or lease, the refrigerated trailers to store the bodies of the dead when there is no where else.

What we are being told in the news daily and by our liberal politicians is that COVID-19 is SO bad, and the deaths have been so many, that anyone who would think about it would start to see refrigerator trailers parked near the morgues and most likely overrun the parking lots. Yet we don’t see even a hint of that in the news and THAT would be newsworthy! We have seen major cities set up triage centers in the parks, with no occupants and even the Navy sending hospital ships to help the overflow of dead with having to depart due to nothing happening. Even missions organizations like Franklin Graham’s Samaritan’s Purse, had to pack up and leave New York because there was not the activity that was reported.

Smoke-screen, smoke-screen, but why? Because those who read AND study their Bibles knows there are other things at work, spiritual things that love the darkness and that use the corruption and egos of power-hungry individuals who have an agenda that goes against the values of the Lord! While people are paying attention to COVID-19, and Christians are concentrating on praying for that to disappear, the real enemy is working behind that smoke-screen to accomplish his one-world agenda and making note of who is compliant and who is not.

As Christians, we SHOULD be praying for the Lord to reveal the truth about COVID-19 and to have Him remove the “smoke-screen” as it were. BUT – we should also be praying for all the other things that are quietly and ever so carefully taking over and replacing the values that the Lord established for this nation especially, and then ask the Lord to open the eyes of the people and especially His children so we can concentrate on what is most important.

In essence, we are doing what Jesus accused the religious Jewish leaders of doing; “straining out the gnats,” the little nuisances and swallowing hook-line and sinker the very things that will destroy us as a nation that was once united.

Understand this; the Anti-Christ will come forth as it’s most likely he is right now waiting in the wings for the liberal agendas that will call upon him. But, right now, because the Holy Spirit IS revealing truth, and the Church of Christ Jesus IS aware and praying, the Anti-Christ’s hands are tied more or less from coming on the scene unfettered. The One-World Order WILL come about, because the Bible, the very Word of God says it will. We will NOT be able to stop it, nor do I believe we should. For in doing so, we would ALSO be praying against the coming of the Kingdom of God, (even though not meaning too), for our Heavenly Father has a plan, a wise plan AND a timeline.

What we should be focusing on however, is not dying from COVID-19, but we should be focusing on Spiritual Revival, not like we have seen in the past, but like we heard and read about when the Church, the True Church began. We NEED to be praying for unity amongst ourselves as brothers and sisters; yes, there will ALWAYS be those factions that skew and twist the Scriptures, but we need to be praying for spiritual wisdom, for the Holy Spirit’s leading and direction, for focus and discipline in what we need to attain.

Remember, when Jesus Christ touches foot in the clouds and that trumpet sounds and those already dead in Christ rise, and then those remaining meet Him in the air, the ONLY hope of salvation for those left behind is the strength to stand up for Christ Jesus and not deny Him in the face of certain death. Remember this, the enemy has always wanted God’s children to suffer. This means those who do face certain death by NOT denying Christ will most likely not always meet with a swift death. It will be a horrific time to still be around, much like in the early days of Christianity, if you have given any thought to what the Bible and especially Revelation speaks of.

COVID-19 is the gnat, believe it or not! It was meant to take our eyes off of what is really going on and again, I am not saying it is not real, what I am saying is it is not something that God’s children need to be fearful of. If you are afraid of catching it and dying, don’t be, you might walk out of your home and be hit by someone in a drive-by shooting! I’m not being sarcastic in that, a Christian should NOT be concerned about natural death for again, the Word of God tells us, “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.” – Hebrews 9:27. We have an appointment, a schedule with natural death and we will NOT die until God says it’s time to go home to be with Him.

What however we SHOULD be focused on and concentrating on instead of this man-made smoke-screen, are the souls searching and questioning and if we give it some thought and we seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance, we might be able to use this situation to speak to the lost about the Lord and His gracious gift of Love.

Remember, we are not OF this world, Jesus has MADE us free from the “morality” of this world, rather we are citizens of a vastly different, spiritual and heavenly Kingdom. But until the Lord DOES call us home we have to live here. Why not use these things that the enemy wants to use to distract and even destroy us with and use them for the Lord’s work. After all, when we do get Home and get to stand before Him, all this and all that is unfolding even now, will pale in comparison when He says, “Well done, for you are and have been a good and faithful servant!”

In closing, let’s not worry about the “gnats” of the world, but rather seek the Holy Spirit through prayer to the Lord to let us know what is truly important in relation to what we should be doing for Him and for one another. COVID-19 has taken up enough of our attention, now let’s focus on where the REAL “camels” are and start battling in the Spirit against them!!!

Faith – ‘Nuff Said!

3 John, Verse 5-8

3 John 1:5-8, “Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do for the brethren and for strangers, who have borne witness of your love before the church. If you send them forward on their journey in a manner worthy of God, you will do well, because they went forth for His name’s sake, taking nothing from the Gentiles. We therefore ought to receive such, that we may become fellow workers for the truth.”

Sad to say, but hospitality, true hospitality seems to be a lost art in the modern church. With the “church” becoming institutionalized it has robbed individuals and those with a ministry of mercy and even giving, of the ability to do as John’s beloved friend Gaius was known to have engaged in.

Hospitality is an important theme in the New Testament writings as attested to some of the comments that Jesus, Himself stated. You can see what He said in Matthew 25:34-40 when He was speaking to the multitudes and His disciples. He told of how the King will reward those who clothed and fed, visited and gave relief to strangers, and how when doing it for them, they were doing it unto Him.

In the reverse, or the negative, Jesus shares, as written in Matthew 25:41-46 what the outcome is to those who refuse or ignore mercy and hospitality to strangers. The truth is, you will still find some hospitality in the smaller, rural-country churches. Sadly, in the large mega-churches, it is easier for the assembly to purchase a hotel room for traveling missionaries and evangelists than it is to open their own doors and give strangers a taste of personal care.

Many today will argue why this is the most convenient and so forth, but as with all things Biblical, there is a reason WHY the Bible has these Spiritual Principles written down for our remembrance. This is another reason, and I KNOW I harp on it a lot, but this is another reason, why the teaching of individual ministries as related in the Bible in the New Testament and especially in the Apostle Paul’s writings is so important. Yet today, and especially in the large, churches, it is not taught or what is taught is a watered-down version of the truth in the Scriptures because so many mega-church pastors, desire to KEEP their members to themselves, rather than encouraging them to go out and emulate the Lord’s way of making disciples!

There is a personal connection to hospitality that is often missed in today’s society and its churches. Jesus taught His disciples over two-thousand years ago to make preaching the Gospel and especially in new cities, personal. He even told them, as He sent the disciples out, to search out people with good reputation and bless them and the very city that welcomes them! As I stated, today, it is very much a lost art. But with Gaius, it WAS a lifestyle to him. It was his way of ministering or serving others; and without meaning too, it caused his reputation to become well known within the growing church.

Which leads me to verse six. John touches on the rewards involved. Though it was obvious from just this little bit that Gaius was not showing hospitality for rewards, the Beloved Apostle is quick to point out that as with ALL giving from a pure motive and a cheerful heart, there are rewards for that service.

First, he became well known for his hospitality. This of course opened the door for more opportunities to show hospitality to others. Yet John is also hinting at the future rewards available to those who give whole-heartedly of themselves. In the Gospel of Matthew, we find Jesus stating this, “He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.” – Matthew 10:40-42.

Now think of what Jesus is saying. You may not be a preacher, a messenger of the Word of God, but if you receive one and open your heart and hearth to them, you will be entitled to the same reward at the Judgment Seat of Christ! Jesus is setting forth another Spiritual Principle here. If you receive one in My name, He says, then you are doing as much as receiving Me. Why? Because it was the Holy Spirit of Christ Himself that sent the minister!

It is evident that God, the Father, WILL pay back all our good deeds done unselfishly! I once heard it said and I can’t remember where, that “God’s kindness will crown the kindness of godly man!” We see it all through the Gospels especially and yet the Apostle John is touching on it here.

Here is another part of John’s statement in this verse that unless you think about it, you might miss it; “If you send them forward on their journey in a manner worthy of God, you will do well, . . .” What is John saying here other than commenting on the future rewards? Remember what Jesus commanded the disciples; take no coin, no extra clothing, but go as you are. Why? Because it gives to those the disciples are going too, the opportunity to receive a minister, a servant of God and the Word and to be the blessing to them that is “a manner worthy of God.”

Remember, Jesus said to leave a blessing if the home and the city is worthy or to brush the dust off and curse the home or city if it is not worthy. In other words, if you are the one distributing hospitality, don’t just give the traveling servants a friendly goodbye and farewell, but help them with adequate supplies to get them to the next place. Today, it would be like filling up their gas tank in their automobiles and giving them some food or groceries and some finances for the journey to get them to the next place they are going. John goes on to say if you do this, “you will do well.”

Now going forward you will see that the Apostle gives a reason for doing this. There is ALWAYS a logical and wise reason for the things we do in the spiritual realm; “Because they went forth for His name’s sake, taking nothing from the Gentiles.” They were going out, being led by the Holy Spirit and were not relying upon unbelievers or the unconverted. Those who travel for the Lord, whether Evangelists, Teachers, Prophets, etc., do so trusting that their needs will be met by the Lord. The Lord has PROMISED to meet their needs and He relies on His children to be the ones to supply those needs in faith and in liberality.

Now understand something; in most cases they were and are even today, traveling to teach the faithful and to preach to the unsaved, presenting the Word of God that has the power to heal the lost spiritually. So it is not that the unsaved are not loved by God and should not be loved by us, with compassion and mercy, but we do NOT want to give the impression that God Almighty, Who supplies ALL our needs, according to His riches in glory, needs the help of the unsaved and unconverted. It is the appearance while preaching the glories of the Kingdom of God. Servants are trusting in the Kingdom of God and those who are citizens of that Kingdom, rather than the kingdom of man or of the world.

One thing you do NOT want to do, while preaching the NEED for the Kingdom of God in one’s life, is to take from the unsaved, which in turn MIGHT cause them to have a false sense of self-righteousness and a belief that their good deeds or works alone is enough! It takes Spiritual Wisdom to labor in the Kingdom of God and I’m saddened to say this, but it is a direct and sad statement of admonishment AGAINST the way many large churches and other religious organizations raise money today! Think about it! Especially in the light of Scripture.

If we are in intimate communion with God, our Heavenly Father we should remember that it is a special obligation AND service to the servants of the Lord who in faith believe that God will supply their needs for the direction that He is leading them in service to others. We often state that “whom the Lord calls, He also equips,” but we need to remember that He also supplies their needs to perform what He equips them to do.

Now John is pretty much “preaching to the choir,” as it were when he commends Gaius in what his friend is already doing. BUT – by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, this is not just a reiteration to Gaius, but a statement to ALL believers in the Lord.

“We therefore ought to receive such, that we may become fellow workers for the truth.” Thus John is reminding us that we are fellow partakers of the work that these servants of the Lord are involved in, when we also help them in their endeavors. We act upon the Holy Spirit’s leading and guidance in relation to their work, thus we also fulfill our work and ultimately it is the Lord Who is blessed. Just as when we do for these servants, it is as if we are doing for the Lord, so John is telling us we are ALSO partaking in the work they do. Yet again, this shows us the interconnectivity of the Scriptures and how, when you delve into the Spirit of the Word, it does NOT contradict itself, but rather confirms and enforces with authority the Spiritual Principles laid out in print! How truly AWESOME is that, when we can see the plan of God so vividly in His Word!

I KNOW I say this so very often and more so of late, but this again just demonstrates the importance of the Body of Christ, working in unity, peace and love with Christ Jesus and His Holy Spirit at the Head of that Body. Everything fits together nicely, just as a healthy body should!

Next post we will begin with 3 John verse 9.

Hope Strengthens The Weak

“Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” – Romans 5:5.

“For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.” – Romans 8:24-25.

“For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.” – Romans 15:4.

“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” – Romans 15:13.

“Therefore, since we have such hope, we use great boldness of speech– . . .” – 2 Corinthians 3:2.

Hope – Absolute Need

anecdotal stories
Proverbs 13:12, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, But desire fulfilled is a tree of life.”

Romans 5:2, “Through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God.”

Romans 5:5, “And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”

You Gotta Have Hope

College football fans knew the late Woody Hayes as a fierce competitor whose passion for winning once led him to slug an opposing player who intercepted an Ohio State pass. But when columnist Bob Greene interviewed him just before his final illness and asked if anything was as important as winning, Woody said yes. “The important thing is not always to win. The important thing is always to hope.”

Hope kept Red McDaniel going in his Vietnamese imprisonment. For him to abandon hope, he wrote, was to abandon survival itself and with it his sense of self and all his personhood. The Jews at Auschwitz and Treblinka lived in daily horror and fear of dying, even as they saw other Jews die. Still, they never lost hope that they personally would survive. “Where there is life, hope must never be relinquished,” one said.

Faith in the eternal God offers a hope that despair cannot diminish. It brings an optimism that pessimism cannot eclipse. It builds a confidence that adversities cannot weaken. It instills a pleasure that pain cannot destroy – faith in the eternal God!

Discipleship – Investigated Firsthand

anecdotal stories
Joshua 22:10, “When they came to the region of the Jordan which is in the land of Canaan, the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built an altar there by the Jordan, a large altar in appearance.”

Joshua 22:24-25, “But truly we have done this out of concern, for a reason, saying, ‘In time to come your sons may say to our sons, “What have you to do with the LORD, the God of Israel? For the LORD has made the Jordan a border between us and you, you sons of Reuben and sons of Gad; you have no portion in the LORD.” So your sons may make our sons stop fearing the LORD.'”

Acts 17:11, “Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.”

That Personal Experience

When the Wright brothers first began experimenting with flying machines, they accepted as fact the data and conclusions that were available in the theory of aviation. As they experimented, however, their own experience provided different conclusions. They began by doubting nothing, yet grew to disbelieve everything about accepted aviation theory. Finally, disregarding all they had learned, they relearned through personal investigation. This led them to build man-carrying gliders in which they spent hundreds of hours over Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. In their Dayton bike shop they built a custom wind tunnel and tested over two hundred different wing surfaces. With minor refinements, their wind tunnel became the prototype of the one used today, and the control system they devised is still used on fixed-wing aircraft.

So many people accept the word of another for the reality of Christ, or for a teaching that is supposed to be in the Bible. In reality, they base their faith on the faith of another – which might be real and true; but again, it might not. The only way to know that you are seeing Jesus personally, Jesus really, and Jesus alone, is to have a personally investigated faith. Study His Word – let God speak for Himself. His Word deals with the intellect and with morality, with the brains and the emotions, with thoughts and behavior.

Today, even amongst Christians, there can be found much of that spirit that wants to give as little as possible to the Lord, and yet to get as much as possible from Him. The prevailing thought today is of being used, as though that were the one thing that mattered. That my little rubber band should be stretched to the very limit seems all important. But this is not the Lord’s mind. The Lord wants us to be used, yes; but what He is after is that we pour all we have, ourselves, to Him, and if that be all, that is enough. – Watchman Nee

Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate. – Dietrich Bonhoeffer

The Initiative Against Despair – Oswald Chambers

Oswald Chambers (July 24, 1874 – November 15, 1917) was an early-twentieth-century Scottish Baptist and Holiness Movement evangelist and teacher, best known for the devotional “My Utmost for His Highest.” Even as a teenager, Chambers was noted for his deep spirituality, and he participated in the evangelization of poor occupants of local lodging houses. At the same time, Chambers also demonstrated gifts in both music and art. While at Edinburgh, he felt called to ministry, and he left for Dunoon College, a small theological training school near Glasgow, founded by the Rev. Duncan MacGregor. Chambers was soon teaching classes at the school and took over much of the administration when MacGregor was injured in 1898.

Matthew 26:46, “Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”

The disciples went to sleep when they should have kept awake, and when they realized what they had done it produced despair.

The sense of the irreparable is apt to make us despair, and we say – “It is all up now, it is no use trying any more.”

If we imagine that this kind of despair is exceptional, we are mistaken, it is a very ordinary human experience. Whenever we realize that we have not done that which we had a magnificent opportunity of doing, then we are apt to sink into despair, and Jesus Christ comes and says – “Sleep on now, that opportunity is lost for ever, you cannot alter it, but arise and go to the next thing.”

Let the past sleep, but let it sleep on the bosom of Christ, and go out into the irresistible future with Him.

There are experiences like this in each of our lives. We are in despair, the despair that comes from actualities, and we cannot lift ourselves out of it.

The disciples in this instance had done a downright unforgivable thing; they had gone to sleep instead of watching with Jesus, but He came with a spiritual initiative against their despair and said – “Arise and do the next thing.”

If we are inspired of God, what is the next thing? To trust Him absolutely and to pray on the ground of His Redemption.

Never let the sense of failure corrupt your new action.

Lift Him Up!

“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.” – John 3:14-21.
