Life Lessons Learned From Noah’s Ark

*Pastor’s Note: Nope, this isn’t mine. I only wish I were this clever. This is one of those special little gems that floated along through the internet groups and emails way back when. I just happened to save it because it WAS so clever! As far as I’m concerned, it’s STILL very appropriate for today!

Things that are important in life:

  1. Don’t miss the boat.
  2. Remember that we are all in the SAME boat.
  3. Plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the Ark.
  4. Stay fit; when you’re 600 years old, someone may ask you to do something big.
  5. Don’t listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.
  6. Build your future on high ground.
  7. For safety’s sake, travel in pairs, in some cases with a crowd of seven.
  8. Speed isn’t always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.
  9. When you’re stressed, just float for a while.
  10. Heed this lesson; the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.
  11. No matter the storm, when you’re with GOD, there’s always a rainbow waiting.

fft noah's ark

May your troubles be less, may your blessings be more,
and may nothing but JOY come through your door!

Daily Prayer & Praise 5/18/2022

Prayer for Wednesday 5-18-2022

Lord our God, Father of us all, grant that we may know something of You in our hearts. Each one of us is different, with his own particular needs, but we are all Your children and should all become children of Your Spirit. Then even in the difficulties of life, in the many struggles, temptations, and sorrows, we can keep up our courage and remain in the Spirit, Who is victorious in every aspect of life. Protect and strengthen us on all our ways. We praise You for all You have done and for all the help You have given us. For Your sake and in the mighty name of Jesus, we pray.

Amen.

The Eternity of God – A.W. Tozer

thought of day header

For Wednesday May 18, 2022:

THE ETERNITY OF GOD

Isaiah 57:15 (NKJV)
For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:
“I dwell in the high and holy place, With him who has a contrite and humble spirit,
To revive the spirit of the humble, And to revive the heart of the contrite ones.”

If I thought that the word “eternal” as referring to God meant only “lasting until the end of the age,” I’d just fold my Bible up and go home and wait for the end. If I had a God that only lasted so long, that didn’t have eternity in His heart, I couldn’t possibly find it worthwhile to preach.

The Old Testament Hebrew has exhausted itself—wrung its language as you wring a towel, to get the last drop of meaning out of it—to say that God is forever and ever endlessly, unto perpetuity, world without end. The New Testament Greek has done the same. There aren’t any other words in the Greek language that can be used to mean “unto perpetuity, having no end, going on and on and on and on endlessly and forever.”

Eternal, everlasting, forever, unto perpetuity, world without end—all of those words mean just what they say. When God talks about Himself, that’s what He means—the High and Lofty One who exists eternally, forever, unto perpetuity, world without end.

Caller ID

food for thought header

*Pastor’s Note: I have no idea whether this is a true story or not. It reads like one and I can definitely see the Hand of God move in a way like this. It came in a series of emails back in the 90s and it’s one of those stories I had to keep.

On a Saturday night several weeks ago, this pastor was working late, and decided to call his wife before he left for home. It was about 10:00 PM, but his wife didn’t answer the phone. The pastor let it ring many times. He thought it was odd that she didn’t answer, but decided to wrap up a few things and try again in a few minutes. When he tried again she answered right away. He asked her why she hadn’t answered before, and she said that it hadn’t rung at their house.

They brushed it off as a fluke and went on their merry ways.

The following Monday, the pastor received a call at the church office, which was the phone that he’d used that Saturday night. The man that he spoke with wanted to know why he’d called on Saturday night. The pastor couldn’t figure out what the man was talking about. Then the man said, “It rang and rang, but I didn’t answer.” The pastor remembered the mishap and apologized for disturbing him, explaining that he’d intended to call his wife.

as God calling

The man said, “That’s OK. Let me tell you my story. You see, I was planning to commit suicide on Saturday night, but before I did, I prayed, ‘God if you’re there, and you don’t want me to do this, give me a sign now.’ At that point my phone started to ring. I looked at the caller ID, and it said, ‘Almighty God’. I was afraid to answer!”

The reason why it showed on the man’s caller ID that the call came from “Almighty God” is because the church that the pastor attends is called Almighty God Tabernacle!!

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.” – Isaiah 55:8-9.

Christ – The Power and Wisdom of God – C.H. Spurgeon

thought of day header

For Tuesday May 17, 2022:

CHRIST – THE POWER AND WISDOM OF GOD

1 Corinthians 1:24 (NKJV)
Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

Christ is the power of God, for he is the Creator of all things, and by Him all things exist. But when he came to earth, took upon himself the fashion of a man, tabernacled in the inn, and slept in the manger, he still gave proof that he was the Son of God; not so much so when, as an infant of a span long, the immortal was the mortal, and the infinite became a babe; not so much so in his youth, but afterwards when he began his public ministry, he gave abundant proofs of his power and godhead. The winds hushed by his finger uplifted, the waves calmed by his voice, so that they became solid as marble beneath his tread; the tempest, cowering at his feet, as before a conqueror whom it knew and obeyed; these things, these stormy elements, the wind, the tempest, and the water, gave full proof of his abundant power. The lame man leaping, the deaf man hearing, the dumb man singing, the dead rising, these, again, were proofs that he was the “power of God.” When the voice of Jesus startled the shades of Hades, and rent the bonds of death, with “Lazarus come forth!” and when the carcass rotten in the tomb woke up to life, there was proof of his divine power and godhead. A thousand other proofs he afforded; but we need not stay to mention them to you who have Bibles in your houses, and who can read them every day. At last he yielded up his life, and was buried in the tomb. Not long, however, did he sleep; for he gave another proof of his divine power and godhead, when starting from his slumber, he affrighted the guards with the majesty of his grandeur, not being held by the bonds of death, they being like green twigs before our conquering Samson, who had meanwhile pulled up the gates of hell, and carried them on his shoulders far away.

Daily Prayer & Praise 5/16/2022

Prayer for Monday 5-16-2022

Lord God, we thank You that You have revealed life in Jesus Christ. Grant that we may enter this life through the grace You have given us to recognize Jesus Christ as our Lord, to believe in Him, and to hope for all the good still to come as the fruit of His suffering and resurrection. May the glory of the Living One be revealed to the dead in spirit throughout the whole world so that even the dead in spirit and the unbelieving may be awakened and see His life. Keep us true to what You have given us. Strengthen our faith and endurance in all our trials. Let Your name soon be honored among all people so that hatred may cease and the coming of Your great day may be foretold in changed hearts and changed thoughts. Protect us throughout our days and nights. Bless us and help us again and again as You have promised. Again we ask in the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen.

God Is Far Above – A.W. Tozer

thought of day header

For Monday May 16, 2022:

GOD IS FAR ABOVE

Isaiah 55:8-9 (NKJV)
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD.
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways,
And My thoughts than your thoughts.”

I want to make it very clear that when I say “far above,” I do not mean geographically or astronomically removed. It’s an analogy. Because we are human beings and live in this world, we learn to speak by analogy. . . .

So when we say that God is far above, we’re using an analogy. We’re thinking about a star that’s way above, way out yonder in space—but that isn’t what we really mean when we think about the transcendent God.

If you miss this point, you might as well stop reading, because this is critical to understanding what follows. When we say that God’s transcendence is “farness above,” we are not thinking about astronomical distances or physical magnitude. God never thinks about the size of anything, because God contains everything. He never thinks about distance, because God is everywhere; He doesn’t have to go from one place to another, so distance doesn’t mean anything to Him. We humans use these expressions to help us to think—they’re analogies and illustrations.

A New Week – Let Us Pray! 5/15/2022

*Pastor’s Note: This was actually what the Lord gave me last Monday and I posted it on a social media group I belong too that posts prayers. I thought this would be fitting for today at the start of a new week as this was something I believe the Holy Spirit laid on my heart to share. Sunday is ALWAYS a good day to share a prayer for the coming week, whether mine or someone else’s, as they all come from a sincere heart and the direction of the Holy Spirit!

1 Thessalonians 5:15b – 18, “Always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all. Rejoice always, PRAY WITHOUT CEASING, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (NKJV) [Bold emphasis mine].

Dearest Father in Heaven;

You are everything. You are all in all and You are in everything. You are Almighty AND Holy, righteous and just and we praise You with all that we are. Be glorified in our lives, not just for Your own sake, but for the sake of Your Son, our Redeemer, Christ Jesus.

As we start a new week dear Lord, we look to You for guidance. Lead us in the directions You would have us to go to be Your vessels so that others might see and know of Your goodness, mercy and grace. Use us as the vessels You created us to be. We surrender our all to You, and if we are even a bit hesitant, give us the strength and the discernment to see we need to surrender our ALL to Your perfect will.

As we go through our perspective week and the duties this week entails, be with us in courage, steadfastness and strength. Allow us to walk forward in confidence, assurance and peace that comes only from You and following Your Holy Spirit. Anoint us to truly BE Your children. Let Your light shine through each and every one of us so that others may see YOUR glory and the glory of Your light in us will blind others to our flaws so they see only You!

Father, we lift up our families, our loved ones, our neighbors and friends to You. Protect them, bless them as they walk in You. For those we love that are lost, dearest Father we lift them up to You and ask You to save them. Draw them to You and if You are willing to use us to be the vessel that does the drawing, give us Your Holy wisdom and discernment to know what to say and when to say it.

For our leaders, we lift them up to You for salvation, wisdom and direction. Your Word tells us You are the One that raises and deposes rulers. We know You have plans that are ultimately for the good of Your children and we trust You in that though we might not see the course or direction You are taking. We cry out to You that we might be a Nation, once again, where the majority looks to You. But You know what is and what will be. Whatever comes, You will ALWAYS be our Lord and our God and we find our refuge, strength and assurance in You and You alone.

Father, as Your Son instructed, we look to You, we trust You, we ask for Your forgiveness in our wrongdoing and misdeeds and ask that You forgive others. We ask these things of You, and we will continue to praise You above all else, in the name of our Savior, Redeemer and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Amen and AMEN!

Genuine Christianity – John Wesley – 1

great sermons header
main pic - john wesleyJohn Wesley (June 28, 1703 – March 2, 1791) was an English cleric, theologian, and evangelist, who was a leader of a revival movement within the Church of England known as Methodism. Wesley argued for the notion of Christian perfection and against Calvinism—and, in particular, against its doctrine of predestination. His evangelicalism, firmly grounded in sacramental theology, maintained that means of grace sometimes had a role in sanctification of the believer; however, he taught that it was by faith a believer was transformed into the likeness of Christ. He held that, in this life, Christians could achieve a state where the love of God “reigned supreme in their hearts”, giving them not only outward but inward holiness. Wesley’s teachings, collectively known as Wesleyan theology, continue to inform the doctrine of Methodist churches.

Excerpt From His Notes “A Plain Account of Genuine Christianity 1753”

1. I would consider, first, who is a Christian indeed? What does that term properly imply? It has been so long abused, I fear, not only to mean nothing at all, but what was far worse than nothing, to be a cloak for the vilest hypocrisy, for the grossest abominations and immoralities of every kind, that it is high time to rescue it out of the hands of wretches that are a reproach to human nature, to show determinately what manner of man he is to whom this name of right belongs.

2. A “Christian” cannot think of the Author of his being without abasing himself before him, without a deep sense of the distance between a worm of earth and him that sits on the circle of the heavens. In his presence he sinks into the dust, knowing himself to be less than nothing in his eye and being conscious, in a manner words cannot express, of his own littleness, ignorance, foolishness. So that he can only cry out, from the fulness of his heart, “O God, what is man? What am I?”

3. He has a continual sense of his dependence on the parent of good, for his being and all the blessings that attend it. To him he refers every natural and every moral endowment, with all that is commonly ascribed either to fortune or to the wisdom, courage, or merit of the possessor. And hence he acquiesces in whatsoever appears to be his will, not only with patience but with thankfulness. He willingly resigns all he is, all he has, to his wise and gracious disposal. The ruling temper of his heart is the most absolute submission and the tenderest gratitude to his sovereign benefactor. And this grateful love creates filial fear, an awful reverence toward him and an earnest care not to give place to any disposition, not to admit an action, word, or thought, which might in any degree displease that indulgent power to whom he owes his life, breath, and all things.

4. And as he has the strongest affection for the fountain of all good, so he has the firmest confidence in him; a confidence which neither pleasure nor pain, neither life nor death, can shake. But yet this, far from creating sloth or indolence, pushes him on to the most vigorous industry. It causes him to put forth all his strength in obeying him in whom he confides; so that he is never faint in his mind, never weary of doing whatever he believes to be his will. And as he knows the most acceptable worship of God is to imitate him he worships, so he is continually laboring to transcribe into himself all his imitable perfections: in particular, his justice, mercy, and truth, so eminently displayed in all his creatures.

5. Above all, remembering that God is love, he is conformed to the same likeness. He is full of love to his neighbor: of universal love, not confined to one sect or party, not restrained to those who agree with him in opinions, or in outward modes of worship, or to those who are allied to him by blood or recommended by nearness of place. Neither does he love those only that love him, or that are endeared to him by intimacy of acquaintance. But his love resembles that of him whose mercy is over all his works. It soars above all these scanty bounds, embracing neighbors and strangers, friends and enemies; yes, not only the good and gentle but also the froward, the evil and unthankful. For he loves every soul that God has made, every child of man, of whatever place or nation. And yet this universal benevolence does in nowise interfere with a peculiar regard for his relations, friends, and benefactors, a fervent love for his country and the most endeared affection to all men of integrity, of clear and generous virtue.

To Be Continued . . .

Do You See, Are You Aware?

prophetic words header wp

Pastor’s Note: God does NOT change and neither does the spirit of His Word. It is living and still relevant for each and every one of us today. With that thought in mind, remember the Prophetic words given by God’s Prophets and Teachers. The words STILL ring true! Do not be fooled into believing God’s Words and warnings were or are only for the children of Israel in ancient history.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-21, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.” KNJV (Bold emphasis, added).

P.S. As I have stated, God does NOT change and His Word does not change. For that matter, human nature does NOT change without the Holy Spirit’s intervention. The Bible is NOT just an historical account, but also a spiritual account of the Father’s Character and Nature. When you read ANY of the Old Testament or for that matter New Testament  prophecies, keep that prayerfully in mind!

God chose Israel through Abraham to be His chosen people. A people in which He would nurture, lead, instruct and one to call His own. He made an everlasting covenant, and agreement with them so that they would live in Him. As time went on, they wanted to be like other nations and in so doing, became rebellious, rejecting God and the covenant of their forefathers. God sent the Prophets that He Himself called to speak to them warning, but also promise and yet still they rejected the Lord as their God following after the customs of other nations. The prophecies stand and are fulfilled because God’s nature and His words do not change. However longsuffering and patient, He must follow through with His words if people do not repent.

Our country, the United States became about because of religious persecution in other countries and men and women of God wanted to worship and serve God not as other men dictated, but as God, leads and guides. They came to America to start a life here and implement their religious freedoms with God Almighty, Jehovah as their leader and God.

pw one nation under God

When this country started to grow in its infancy and government regulations and rules were established, the men chosen to lead for the most part were God-fearing men. The rules and regulations they implement became our Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. It was NOT the Bible or the covenant God made between He and the Israelites, but whereas God chose them, the people of our nation chose God. Their covenant was based on spiritual principles and they let all know that we as a nation followed after God Almighty.

Because of that God had blessed abundantly this infant nation. In so doing we acknowledged our trust in God on our currency, on our public buildings, by Bible teaching and prayer as part of school curriculum.

Sadly however, we became just like ancient Israel in the sense that as we became more prosperous and more powerful we started to reject God and the covenant we made with Him based on the Constitution. In the span of two centuries, we repeated the mistakes of Israel that took them many centuries.

Again, God’s Word does not change. His Nature and Character does not change. The reasons for His anger, His admonition to stick to holiness, integrity and honor, righteousness and mercy do not change. Sadly, neither does human nature, no matter how much God blesses them! Our governments begin to forsake the very laws that caused them to prosper. The churches established that cause our nation to prosper decided to adopt their own theologies, many of them with mixtures of foreign, pagan practice and even New Age practices thrown in.

However, just like in ancient Israel, God has His prophets who proclaim the Word of God and it is unchanging. The time has changed, but not the circumstances. There is still rampant wickedness and lawlessness and especially in the leadership. Churches would rather have their people’s ears tickled with social gospels, false teaching and yes, just like Israel, false prophets prophesying that all is well with them because they belong to God while actually rejecting Him while still using His name as a figure-head!

What makes modern man think that because we chose God, that His words of warning to His chosen people won’t apply to us? We have claimed Him as our own God and have been happy and satisfied in His blessings. What makes us think that we can reject Him like Israel did and be successful and prosperous AND honorable on our own? It spiritually can’t and it won’t happen.

pw God's word forever

The following is an adaptation ONLY of the prophecy the Lord gave Israel for doing then what we are actually doing today! It is NOT a new prophecy and I have only updated certain things to reflect this time and this nation. This can apply to ANY and ALL nations who abandon God Almighty.

Do NOT let the god of this world, the god who has spread leaven everywhere and anywhere he can, to blind your eyes and dull your hearing. Like ancient Israel, we have become a land of scoffers and mockers! Wickedness and corruption is no longer staying in the shadows but is coming out into the light and BOASTING!!

This nation is headed for judgment as surely as ancient Israel was and DID go through! However, just like in ancient Israel, God still had His chosen who remained righteous and was rescued from all the things that came to those who rejected God. Today, God has a TRUE CHURCH, His Body, that is intermingled among the false and His true chosen still walk in righteousness in Christ Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit!

I have said it before and I will continue to say it, God will judge the NATION as a whole and judgment will be terrible and when it comes, swift. BUT – His righteous followers will continue to be sheltered under His wings and will find refuge in Him. God does not, nor ever has moved forward without letting His people know what He is about to do so they can be prepared and pray. He is telling people today, judgment is coming upon the rebellious in spirit!

The following is the prophecy that Ezekiel gave, again, adapted for our time and nation and circumstance. It is based on parts of Ezekiel chapter 8 and 9. Read it in your Bible and see if what I say isn’t true. Read it prayerfully and seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance. The time is definitely getting shorter!

Yet for many years You had patience with them, And testified against them by Your Spirit in Your prophets. Yet they would not listen; Therefore You gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands. – Nehemiah 9:30. (NKJV)

“Go in,” God said, “and see the wicked and detestable sins the people are committing” So I went in and saw the walls covered with engravings of all kinds of crawling animals and detestable creatures. I also saw the various idols worshiped by the religious peoples. Leaders, teachers, preachers and prophets of religion and various churches were standing there. Each of them held an incense burner, from which a cloud of incense rose above their heads.

pw idol - incense

Then the Lord asked me, “Have you seen what the religious leaders are doing with their idols in dark rooms? They are saying, ‘The Lord doesn’t see us; he has deserted us and left us to our own means!’” Then the Lord added, “Come, and I will show you even more detestable sins than these!”

He brought me to a place where some women were sitting, weeping for the gods that they look too with their crystals and amulets. “Have you seen this?” he asked. “But I will show you even more detestable sins than these!”

Then he brought me into another area of the Lord’s Temple. At the entrance to the sanctuary, between the entry room and the sanctuary, there were men with their backs to the sanctuary of the Lord. They were facing east, bowing low to the ground, worshiping and praising the sun!

“Have you seen this?” he asked. “Is it nothing to the people that they commit these detestable sins, leading their whole communities and nations into violence and protests, thumbing their noses at me Who could help them, only to provoke me to anger? Therefore, I will respond in fury. I will neither pity nor spare them. Though they cry for mercy, I will not listen.”

Then the Lord thundered, “Bring on the angels appointed to punish this rebellious people! Tell them to bring their weapons with them!” The angels soon appeared each carrying a deadly weapon in his hand. With them was a angel dressed in linen, who carried a writer’s case at his side. They all went into the sanctuary and stood in the center of the “Temple.”

Then the glory of the God rose up and moved to the entrance of the sanctuary, and the Lord called to the angel dressed in linen who was carrying the writer’s case. He said to him, “Walk through the sanctuary and all the congregation and put a mark on the foreheads of all who weep and sigh because of the detestable sins being committed within their churches.”

Then I heard the Lord say to the other angels, “Follow him through the city and kill everyone whose forehead is not marked. Show no mercy; have no pity! Kill them all—old and young, girls and women and little children. But do not touch anyone with the mark. Begin right here at the sanctuary” So they began by killing the leaders who led them astray.

pw many sins

God said, “The sins of the people who say they are mine and are not are very, very great. The entire land is full of murder; the city is filled with injustice. They are saying, ‘The Lord doesn’t see it! The Lord has abandoned us to our own means and desires!’ So I will not spare them or have any pity on them. I will fully repay them for all they have done.”

Then the man in linen clothing, who carried the writer’s case, reported back and said to the Lord, “I have done as you commanded.”

Chief Cornerstone

thought of day header

For Sunday May 15, 2022:

CHIEF CORNERSTONE

Psalm 118:22 (NKJV)
The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone.

The idea of setting a large stone with perfectly squared corners at the corner of a new building is an ancient one. The tradition is carried on today but for different reasons. Today the cornerstone of a building is laid for commemorative or memorial reasons. But in ancient times, the squared corners of the cornerstone served an engineering purpose: to set the direction of the two walls connected at the corner.

Interestingly, in modern Greece the blood of a sacrificial animal is sometimes sprinkled on a new cornerstone to give it strength and endurance. What an amazing picture of the cornerstone the Bible describes: Jesus Christ. Indeed, the Bible calls Christ the “chief” cornerstone. Christ sets the standard and measurements for the building for which He shed His blood—the temple made of living stones, the church (1 Peter 2:5). Whenever anything is built in the Kingdom of God, it must draw its direction and standards from the Chief Cornerstone, Jesus Christ.

The same is true for each Christian. The only way to adjust one’s life is to measure it by the standard of the Chief Cornerstone.

Jesus is the Cornerstone, came for sinners to atone.
Though rejected by His own, He became the Cornerstone.

Daily Prayer & Praise 5/13/2022

Prayer for Friday 5-13-2022

Lord our God, whose light shines out of the darkness and gleams brightly into our hearts, we thank You for all the goodness You allow us to see and experience. We want to see Your goodness clearly and have confidence in it, no matter how much around us is dark and disquieting. We want to remain firm and full of trust, looking to what You have put into our hearts so that we may come to know You all the more as each day goes by. Be with us with Your Spirit. Lead us to realize ever more clearly that we are made for Your honor that You may be glorified for Your sake and the sake of Christ Jesus our Lord.

Amen.

Thoughts On The Last Battle – C.H. Spurgeon

thought of day header

For Friday May 13, 2022:

THOUGHTS OF THE LAST BATTLE

1 Corinthians 15:56-57 (NKJV)
The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God,
who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

While the Bible is one of the most poetical of books, though its language is unutterably sublime, yet we must remark how constantly it is true to nature. There is no straining of a fact, no glossing over a truth. However dark may be the subject, while it lights it up with brilliance, yet it does not deny the gloom connected with it. If you will read this chapter of Paul’s epistle, so justly celebrated as a masterpiece of language, you will find him speaking of that which is to come after death with such exaltation and glory, that you feel, “If this be to die, then it were well to depart at once.” Who has not rejoiced, and whose heart has not been lifted up, or filled with a holy fire, while he has read such sentences as these: “In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O Death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” Yet with all that majestic language, with all that bold flight of eloquence, he does not deny that death is a gloomy thing. Even his very figures imply it. He does not laugh at it; he does not say, “Oh, it is nothing to die;” he describes death as a monster; he speaks of it as having a sting; he tells us wherein the strength of that sting lies; and even in the exclamation of triumph he imputes that victory not to unaided flesh, but he says, “Thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Philemon Verses 4-7

Philemon 1:4-7, I thank my God, making mention of you always in my prayers, hearing of your love and faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints, that the sharing of your faith may become effective by the acknowledgment of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus. For we have great joy and consolation in your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed by you, brother.

As we mentioned in the first section and the introduction to this personal letter, Paul’s wisdom and sensibility becomes very evident as you read and begin to digest what he is preparing to ask of Philemon. We need to remember that this was within the very infant church and as such there were only starting indications of situations that would need to be addressed by those in authority.

The love of Christ and the faith in Him and what He had given to the foundling church was just starting to manifest itself, but like all new things and especially spiritual things, the enemy will do all he can to try and thwart any advancement. He will use obstacles such as disagreements and dissension to try and break down the ongoing morale. However, the Apostles and in this case, the Apostle Paul was employing the tactics inspired and motivated by the Holy Spirit in what could have been, and for the time most certainly was, a very delicate situation.

However, Paul continues with his letter, though it is a personal one, with a very tried and true exhortation that he uses in almost all of his letters. Take heed however, this does not mean he was advancing without the most sincerest of hearts. Paul starts by letting Philemon know most specifically by the way he phrases the thanksgiving that he thanks God for him continually.

et paul writing

Paul’s personality and strong belief comes through when he tells Philemon that it is to MY God, that he mentions Philemon in his prayers. Paul is indicating just how personal the relationship is with the Creator of all there is. This tends to lend impact to what Paul follows up with; the fact that he, Paul, is going to God Almighty, His God, and thus Philemon’s also, to make mention of him specifically.

Paul then goes on to give Philemon the motivation of why he is in the Apostles prayers continually; Philemon’s love and faith. These were two of the qualities found in Philemon that Paul especially felt joy in. His love for others, especially the saints, and his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

I want to diverge here for just a moment. As I’ve studied, I have found it brought up several times that Paul addressed his reasons a little differently than he had in previous more public letters. In most of those, he usually commends others for their FAITH first, and then following with their LOVE. Many scholars have taken note of this and have come to believe that because this is a more personal letter and one that is laying the foundation for a specific request, that Paul wanted to remind first and foremost of Philemon’s love for ALL saints and then how that ties in with his faith in Christ Jesus. To me, it demonstrates that bit of wisdom that Paul shows so prevalently.

It is not that Paul is “buttering up” Philemon for I believe due to the tone, he is very, very sincere, but he is getting ready to make a request that will require that very real Christian love. You will notice that he literally “wraps” the commendation of his love in with the faith of the Lord Jesus Christ so that in essence, Philemon cannot separate the two. Besides, if you truly break the sentence apart, you realize it places a lot more emphasis on the word ALL, when he writes “toward all the saints.” As a side note, let me just say that the word “saints” that Paul is using is not for just a few “exceptional” Christians, but is meant to denote every TRUE follower of Christ Jesus.

So, Paul is really directing Philemon’s thoughts back to his effectiveness in sharing love with all saints, but the Apostles ties it so wisely to the faith Philemon has in Christ Jesus. You must remember, and it is sometimes easy to forget when you are just reading or even superficially studying the Word that this Word was put down under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Did the writers realize they were doing this very thing as they wrote? Maybe in some cases they felt an unction, an anointing but in most cases they were led to write for what to us might seem the most mundane of reasons. As in Paul’s case, to plead personally to a friend for a favor and in the case of others, to record events and speech so that they and others would be able to remember it. This is NO way, diminishes the importance or the very FACT that it is the Holy Spirit behind it all!

et inspired by spirit

Now these two verses, actually only one sentence, expresses Paul’s thankfulness towards his friend and why as a brother in Christ he IS thankful for Him to God almighty, that being, his Christian love and faith in Christ.

Paul goes on in verse six as to the motive now for his prayers and that is he prays for Philemon to continue to be active in the SHARING of his faith. Paul uses the Greek word, koinōnia, which literally means “fellowship and sharing” to describe the Christian way of giving.

In other words, Paul is thankful for Philemon’s character, but now he is making intercession rather than thanksgiving on behalf of Philemon in the sense that he will continue on in his dedication to love the saints, in which Paul will state that Onesimus is now one, and in his continued faith through the action of sharing in love. It goes right along with what James stated in his epistle:

Someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. – James 2:18.

Paul prays for Philemon, desiring that the actual active sharing of his faith would become effective and more productive as he, Philemon, understands, comprehends and acknowledges the blessings (every good thing) that comes from the work God does through him as a vessel.

Our faith in the Lord leads us to ACT in love as I have often taught for years, based on the Scriptures. It isn’t based on feelings or even what we see or expect in the moment. It is based on God’s ability to use what we do IN FAITH and LOVE towards others, making our sometimes sacrifice a blessing towards another. It is very obvious that as you read this short letter, you can see Paul setting the stage for Philemon to again put that faith and love into action towards another brother, even though it is returning slave who ran away. There is an awful lot of Christ-like character in just these few words that Paul has already put to pen.

The foundation of sharing in a Christian’s life can and most often is in supply material needs to others, but it is also the very basis for witnessing, testifying and evangelizing. Those things that God has poured into us, most often times to overflowing, are the catalyst in sharing a life that has been not only touched by God, but changed by Him as well. I am sure this is what was on the Apostle’s mind when he spoke of praying for a more effective demonstration of  Philemon’s faith. His character was already worthy of thanks to the Lord; now Paul is interceding on Philemon’s behalf that it would become even greater in service.

et radical love

Now the Apostle and friend wraps his greeting up with even more by letting Philemon know that word of his deeds have reached many places and because it and his service to Christ ties itself to Paul, most likely because Paul led him to the Lord, it has been effective in giving the Apostle GREAT “joy and consolation” in the fact that Philemon is known for his love not just to Christ Jesus, but to saints everywhere.

You have to understand the times and the places that many of these people including the Apostle have lived and communed. It may seem on the surface that Paul is being subtle in his flattery, but when you KNOW the character of Paul and the fact that he tries to tie his character so closely to Jesus, you have to realize that Paul is not playing tricks with words, but truly, yet thoughtfully AND sincerely, laying out his heart to his friend, it is not flattery therefore, but rather encouragement in the Lord. This is a great lesson for us as brothers and sisters and disciples of Christ Jesus for the world WE are living in today! It is never wrong to give encouragement where it is deserved but also needed!

Paul is letting his friend know that his deeds are known to many, many of the saints, because he has “refreshed the hearts” of many saints. In the early church, with all the beginnings of turmoil and disciples and Christians trying to find their way in an ever-changing world, words such as the encouragement that Paul relayed to Philemon were not only often needed, but most welcome. It is one brother encouraging and commending another brother in the Lord that their deeds are seen and known. Many times, the things we do in service to Christ Jesus is with the understanding of what Jesus taught directly to His disciples:

“But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.” – Matthew 6:3-4.

Our Heavenly Father knows the deeds that are done by each and every one of us as was the case with Philemon and Paul was reminding him that yes, the Father does see in secret, but because many hearts were being fed and filled with God’s joy, the word of his Christian love was also becoming known, thus, his faith in Christ Jesus which leads him to love like that! That’s a lot to see in these four few verses. They are easy to skim over and in the overall context think how generous Paul is, and yet, we would miss so much depth and teaching that arises from them.

et God sees

Maybe, you can begin to see why even a short letter like this can make someone very excited to be studying it. Think about it, consider the implications of what Paul was saying to ALL of us through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and then let’s determine in our hearts to go and actually LIVE it!

Next post we will begin with Philemon verse 8.
