Daily Prayer & Praise 5/25/2022

Prayer for Wednesday 5-25-2022

Lord our God, we stand before You and rejoice that we may have fellowship with You through our Lord Jesus Christ. Grant us the light of Your Spirit. Grant our hearts strength for life. Open for us the paths of life, that we may find joy and hope in spite of all the suffering we must go through on earth. Let all humankind be entrusted to Your care for we know You do sit on the throne. Continue to rule over all with Your power, whether they are aware of it or not, and take world history into Your hands so that Your plans will be fulfilled and all people may receive Your mercy. In Christ Jesus, we beseech You and ask these things.

Amen.

The God of The Aged – C.H. Spurgeon

thought of day header

For Wednesday May 25, 2022:

THE GOD OF THE AGED

Isaiah 46:4 (NKJV)
“Even to your old age, I am He, And even to gray hairs I will carry you!
I have made, and I will bear; Even I will carry, and will deliver you.”

Middle aged man! Listen to what David says, again, “I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.” Go on, then, unsheathe your sword once more. “The battle is the Lord’s;” leave your declining years to him, and give your present years to him. Live to him now, and he will never cast you away when you are old. Do not lay up for old age and keep back from the cause of God; but rather trust God for the future. Be “diligent in business;” but take care you do not hurt your spirit, by being too diligent, by being grasping and selfish. Remember you will

“Want but little here below, Nor want that little long.”

And lastly, my dear venerable fathers in the faith, and mothers in Israel, take these words for your joy. Do not let the young people catch you indulging in melancholy, sitting in your chimney corner, grumbling and growling, but go about cheerful and happy, and they will think how blessed it is to be a Christian. If you are surly and fretful, they will think the Lord has forsaken you; but keep a smiling countenance, and they will think the promise is fulfilled. “And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.” Do, I beseech you, my venerable friends, try to be of a happy temperament and cheerful spirit, for a child will run away from a surly old man; but there is not a child in the world who does not love his grandfather if he is cheerful and happy. You can lead us to heaven if you have got heaven’s sunlight on your face.

Unity of The Spirit – Bond of Peace

I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. – Ephesians 4:1-3.

Unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. So many of us have stated this Scripture often enough but how often do we actually ENDEAVOR to keep it?

I’m prompted this week because of at least two social groups, “Christian” groups that I have belonged too for over a year now. I’ve spent time utilizing my ministry to encourage and to inspire while at the same time trying to acknowledge others within the Body of Christ to keep persevering. It’s never a waste of time, because you never know who the Holy Spirit might just speak too through one of your posts.

However, as time moves forward and God’s plans are unfolding in the world and within our own nation, it appears that things around us are “collapsing” as it were and falling apart. Instead of seeing more unity in the spirit in the bond of peace, I am starting to see more division and dogmatic, almost cultish tendencies develop in those I have called brother and sister for so long.

Now just as some background for those that might not know me, I “categorize” myself (don’t we just love titles?) as a Fundamental, Full-Gospel, believer and teacher. I do not belong or answer too any denomination. I TRY and take my study and teaching from the Word of God without bias as to a denominational preference. Now understand, this is not always easy as we all have backgrounds based on something.

Myself, I was raised Catholic until I got saved in a little Pentecostal Church just before my 17th birthday. I wanted to learn all I can, so I told the Lord that I will follow Him wherever He leads me if He will teach me. I have been to several denominations and served in whatever capacity I could all the while learning how to do things effectively and definitely learning how NOT to do things in certain instances. The Lord has been faithful to our covenant, all the while learning to use the Scriptures to verify, interpret and confirm Scriptures.

pd galatians 5 _13

I was ordained in a medium sized Independent Charismatic church back in the mid-eighties, held several ministerial positions, worship pastor, teen leader, assistant and associate pastor and I was just getting ready to plant a church in a small Arizona community when the Lord spoke to my heart and said, no, or not yet. Soon after, I got into a pretty serious car accident that didn’t immediately take it’s toll, but eventually prohibited me from being able to stand for more than five, maybe ten minutes. Guess what? There’s a lot of ministries that believe something like that happens because you have unrepented sin in your life and you become a pariah! It’s like leprosy, no one wants you around them.

Fortunately, the Lord DID lead me into starting an outreach ministry just before the accident that involved visiting other churches and teaching as a guest speaker etc. It didn’t happen a lot, but in our small area, I had opportunities. I was also asked to write short messages for the local newspaper and such, so ministerial wise, I kept busy.

One thing I learned early on and especially if you are independent in ministry, and I can thank my spiritual mentor who performed the ordination, is that to maintain integrity in ministry, you HAVE to make yourself accountable to others. No man/person is an island to themselves and especially in ministry and I can thank the Lord whole-heartedly for that teaching.

As I stated, I don’t subscribe to a denomination for there is no one group that has all the answers correct and that includes independents like myself. But we ALL do have gifts and some denominations and groups are gifted in certain areas stronger than in others and I can see that as the “big picture” in God’s plan for the Body of Christ. That is why I have peers that I respect and admire that are Pentecostal, Independent Charismatic, Baptist, Methodist, even Mennonite. Why? Aren’t I afraid of watering down what the Lord has given me?

On the contrary, their insights stimulate me to get into the Word even deeper. Also, when there are issues or problems as there always are in ministry, I have others I can go to for advice or at the very least and understanding ear. There is no one person that doesn’t need that.

Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety. – Proverbs 11:14.

pd accountability

Anyway it was about 1996 when I got my first computer. I love technology! As a tool that is. I recognize the benefits of technologies usefulness and did right away. Yeah, by many standards though I was a “late-bloomer!”

Soon after I started experimenting with group sites like Yahoo! and MSN and was really getting interested in learning how to use ministry on personal websites. During this time, I was told I was wasting my time, because unless you had a church and used the websites for ads for your church and drawing people in, it was nothing more than a “hobby” ministry and no one would take you seriously.

Curious enough, I found even then, in the late 90s, there were a lot of homebound people that had illnesses or disabilities that made it hard for them to attend church and to my surprise, some churches that more or less distanced themselves from those with disabilities, much like what was beginning to happen to me.

Soon, however I stumbled across some Forums. Not exactly groups, but like interactive, real-time websites where you can have and control memberships, have discussions, join in teachings and studies and I jumped on the chance to learn the coding to develop that. Soon I had a couple thriving forums on which I was teaching, praying, encouraging and joining in with others in studies and such. There was a LOT of hunger back then.

Well, unbeknownst to me, the Holy Spirit was out in front the whole time, opening doors and leading me into what was a fairly new area of ministry with a lot of hungry people in the waiting “wings” as it were. Still, I had my detractors, but I really encouraged others that if they had any kind of gift that could be shared, the internet was the place to do it.

Anyway, here we are today, now with social media and social media groups and the sites are as common and as prolific as sand on the beach. I’ve advanced from websites to Blogs, just more interactive websites really, to social media groups and after all these years I’m still doing what I can and trying to find new ways to get the Word of God across in a medium that today feeds very short attention spans.

Which leads me to division. Over the years, I’ve seen little bouts of it here and there, but I think everyone was so busy getting used to the availability and the convenience of instant media that at first they weren’t thinking of their differences. In fact, I have found a lot of groups, even today that welcome just about everybody who believes in “Christ and Him crucified” as the Apostle Paul stated it when he was talking about division.

pd salvation

For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. – 1 Corinthians 2:2.

However, I also believe social media offers opportunities to people of every ideology and theology and while that is good in a diverse society in Christianity it can’t be that way. The Apostle goes on to state the reason we should be endeavoring or STRIVING for unity of the Spirit and that he continues on in verse 4:

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. – Ephesians 4:4-6.

Yes, there are differing denominations with some differing doctrinal differences, but what makes us ONE in Christ Jesus and thus brothers and sisters is what Paul concludes in verses 4-6. Everything else compared to that, as far as salvation goes, that part that makes us brothers and sisters, is secondary. It reminds me so much of the stories that I have heard all through my Christian journey about churches that have split over the kind of Hymnals or song books they should have, the color of carpet in the sanctuary, or whether to have pews or folding chairs or wooden seats, whatever!

Today with all the armchair prophets coming out of the woodwork, it’s whether you believe in pretribulation rapture or mid-tribulation or even post-tribulation. Oh and if that’s not enough there are those that believe in no rapture or in partial rapture! It is those things that divide the church when one or more sides become so dogmatic about who is right.

If the Word of God tells us that even the Son or the angels don’t even know the time, only the Father, than why is the difference so divisive in the Body of Christ? Isn’t the real truth of the prophecies to give warning to the world and hope to God’s chosen? Isn’t it more important and obvious that no matter what happens we are to continue to walk in FAITH (which means not seeing the steps in front) and keep trusting the Lord and His Holy Spirit to carry us through whatever tomorrow brings? If that is the case with a Christian’s journey and walk, why are all the other details, aside from what the Apostle Paul claims makes us One and United, what difference does it really make?

pd leap of faith

Because I am independent and not a Baptist or a Pentecostal or a Methodist or a Lutheran or a Charismatic, yet I believe in “Christ and Him crucified,” and that’s what I teach, all of a sudden I am a False Prophet or False Teacher? By that reasoning, if we all took that stand, we could ALL claim that ALL others besides ourselves are False Teachers and False Prophets.

All I can say to that is boy, is the devil having a heyday! When he sees this type of thing go on between brothers and sisters, he must be sitting back and enjoying his days of rest, because he certainly isn’t having to do anything himself!!

Sue and I ministered in a denominational church when we were younger, just starting out and we were learning so much. Now, we were told NOT to be a part because they were dogmatic and cultish about certain things. The truth is, we learned an awesome viewpoint on how to look at Scripture, but we could also see, thanks to the working of the Holy Spirit in our lives when things went side-ways, so to speak, in their interpretation. Eventually the Lord spoke to both of us that it was time to move on. Though we spent nearly 18 months ministering side by side with them, when we informed them we were moving on, we were told we were leaving the light and going back into darkness. In other words, in their eyes, we were apostates. When they saw us around town, some of them, anyway, it was like we were shunned! I still consider them brothers and sisters because they believe that Jesus died for them, forgave their sins, rose again and is sitting on His throne. Christ and Him crucified for the forgiveness and redemption of those who would accept His gift. But because we didn’t truly believe in every little detail, we could have no fellowship with them because light cannot fellowship with darkness.

The two groups I started out mentioning that led me to this post; yeah, to a degree that’s how they feel, because we would rather treat others as Jesus did when He walked this earth in relation to sin, AND we would rather trust in Him day to day to keep us, no matter WHEN He is coming in the clouds to gather His chosen!

Division, Jesus said it well;

But Jesus . . . said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.” – Matthew 12:25; Mark 12:24-25; Luke 11:17.

pd divided we fail

Jesus was talking to the religious leaders of His day, the RELIGIOUS! Shouldn’t that tell us something? STRIVE, ENDEAVOR “to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” In other words, it takes work to accomplish that. As with all things spiritual, it takes action on our part. We have to do something for it to be realized!

I truly love my brothers and sisters and not just in words either. No it’s not just a feeling either. I truly admire and respect them, even those who don’t agree with me on every point. I’m not perfect, I’m almost seventy years old and I still stumble, but I am also still learning! That SHOULD say something in the greater scheme of things.

God Bless!

Daily Prayer & Praise 5/24/2022

Prayer for Tuesday 5-24-2022

We thank You, dear Father in Heaven, for the many times You let us experience the truth that we do not need to despair because of darkness, weakness, or sickness. You hear the desires of our hearts. You love us for all that we love when we love the Savior and when we praise His name. Let us remain in this spirit. Come to us with many proofs of Your mighty power, to the glory and for the sake of Your name. Come in the inner quiet of heart through which we are able to grasp what it means for us that You truly are our Father, in Jesus Christ we ask You.

Amen.

The Source of All Power – A.W. Tozer

thought of day header

For Tuesday May 24, 2022:

THE SOURCE OF ALL POWER

Deuteronomy 3:24 (NKJV)
‘O Lord GOD, You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness
and Your mighty hand, for what god is there in heaven or on earth
who can do anything like Your works and Your mighty deeds?’

God is the source of all the power there is. There isn’t any power anywhere that doesn’t have God as its source, whether it be the power of the intellect, of the spirit, of the soul, of dynamite, of the storm or of magnetic attraction. Wherever there is any power at all, God is the author of it. And the source of anything has to be greater than that which flows out of it.

If you pour a quart of milk out of a can, that can has to be equal to or greater than a quart. The can has to be as big as or bigger than that which comes out of it. The can may contain several gallons, though you may pour out only a quart. The source has to be as big or bigger than that which comes out of it. So if all the power there is came from God—all the power—therefore, God’s power must be equal to or greater than all the power there is.

Looking Unto Jesus – C.H. Spurgeon

thought of day header

For Monday May 23, 2022:

LOOKING UNTO JESUS

Psalm 34:5 (NKJV)
They looked to Him and were radiant, And their faces were not ashamed.

See there he sits in heaven, he has led captivity captive, and now sits at the right hand of God, for ever making intercession for us. Can your faith picture him today? Like a great high priest of old, he stands with outstretched arms: there is majesty in his demeanor, for he is no mean cringing suppliant. He does not beat his breast, nor cast his eyes upon the ground, but with authority he pleads, enthroned in glory now. There on his head is the bright shining miter of his priesthood, and look you, on his breast are glittering the precious stones whereon the names of his elect are everlastingly engraved; hear him as he pleads, hear you not what it is?—is that your prayer that he is mentioning before the throne? The prayer that this morning you offered before you came to the house of God, Christ is now offering before his Father’s throne. The vow which just now you uttered when you said, “Have pity and have mercy,”—he is now uttering there. He is the Altar and the Priest, and with his own sacrifice he perfumes our prayers. And yet, mayhap, you have been at prayer many a day, and had no answer; poor weeping suppliant, you have sought the Lord and he has not heard you, or at least not answered you to your soul’s delight; you have cried unto him, but the heavens have been as brass, and he has shut out your prayer, you are full of darkness and heaviness on account of this, “Look to him, and be lightened.” If you do not succeed, he will; if your intercession be unnoticed, his cannot be passed away; if your prayers can be like water spilt on a rock which cannot be gathered up, yet his prayers are not like that, he is God’s Son, he pleads and must prevail.

Habakkuk’s Prayer – Let’s Praise The Lord

Just like Jeremiah’s Prayer and Daniel’s Prayer before, this struck me as such a great prayer that is still very fitting for today. I’ve been reading through the Prophets and so I’ve had this one set aside for a while and I thought of all the praise we due the Lord for so many blessings despite the things going on around us, this is a good prayer to remember when it comes to God’s loving goodness to us in the midst of trials and troubles.

Again, this is a prayer based solely on Habakkuk’s prayer to the Lord and his hymn of praise found in chapter 3 of his book. It is an adaptation for today, thus it is not word for word. I believe it is true and sincere to his intent and still worthy of prayer today.

Let us pray:

Dearest Heavenly Father:

We know all about You, Lord. We are filled with awe by Your amazing works. In times of our deep need, help us again as You always have. If we have caused You anger, remember Your mercy towards.

God, Your brilliant splendor fills the heavens, and the earth is filled with Your praise. Your coming is as brilliant as the sunrise. Rays of light flash from Your hands, where Your awesome power is hidden and on display.

You stood and measured the earth; You looked and the nations are startled as the earth shakes. The everlasting mountains are scattered in Your gaze, the timeless hills are caused to bow. Your ways are everlasting and You are indeed the eternal One.

You split open the earth with flowing rivers wherever You desire. The mountains can only watch and tremble. Onward sweep the raging and rolling waters. The mighty deep even cries out, lifting its hands in submission. The sun and moon stand still in the sky as Your brilliant arrows of light fly and Your glittering spear flashes.

You have gone out to rescue your chosen people, those who call You by name, to save Your anointed ones. You have crushed the heads of the wicked and You lay them and their wicked deeds bare.

Though the fruit trees may not blossom, or fruit fall heavy on the vines; though the harvest of crops may fail, and the fields yield no food; though the flocks and the cattle may be cut off from the fold and the herd; and even if there be no herd in the stalls – yet I will continue to rejoice in You, my LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The LORD God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer’s feet, steadfast and secure, and He will make me walk on the high hills and high places.

You are and always will be my Lord and my God!

Amen and AMEN.

The Watchman’s Message

prophetic words header wp

Pastor’s Note: God does NOT change and neither does the spirit of His Word. It is living and still relevant for each and every one of us today. With that thought in mind, remember the Prophetic words given by God’s Prophets and Teachers. The words STILL ring true! Do not be fooled into believing God’s Words and warnings were or are only for the children of Israel in ancient history.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-21, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.” KNJV (Bold emphasis, added).

P.S. The following is a prophetic word that stands the test of time. Though it was given to Ezekiel for a specific circumstance, it is a Spiritual Principle that God also gave to us for posterity. You cannot separate the truth of this Word from mankind just because it was given “way back when.” You will find the principle behind this all throughout Scripture, both Old Testament and New Testament. If you are a Christian today, then it has become part of our duty to be a Watchman not just for our Brothers and Sisters, but for the world in general. Eternal souls and well-being is at stake!

Remember one thing; this is a prophecy of warning, true, but it is also a message of hope to all those that listen to the alarms of the watchmen and take heed to the truths that they speak. God ALWAYS reveals to His servants what is instore and what they have to do to continue to walk in His Word and His righteousness.

Indeed, the Sovereign Lord never does anything until he reveals his plans to his servants the prophets. – Amos 3:7.

The Lord says, “Give the people this message: You are saying, ‘Our sins are heavy upon us; we are wasting away! How can we survive?’ As surely as I live, says the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of wicked people. I only want them to turn from their wicked ways so they can live. Turn! Turn from your wickedness, Oh people! Why should you die?”

“Give the people this message: The righteous behavior of righteous people will not save them if they turn to sin, nor will the wicked behavior of wicked people destroy them if they repent and turn from their sins. When I tell righteous people that they will live, but then they sin, expecting their past righteousness to save them, then none of their righteous acts will be remembered. I will destroy them for their sins. And suppose I tell some wicked people that they will surely die, but then they turn from their sins and do what is just and right. For instance, return what they have stolen, start to walk in righteousness and obey my life-giving commandments, no longer doing what is evil. If they do this, then they will surely live and not die. None of their past sins will be brought up again, for they have done what is just and right, and they will surely live.”

pw watchman

“The people are saying, ‘The Lord isn’t doing what’s right,’ but it is they who are not doing what’s right. For again I say, when righteous people turn away from their righteous behavior and turn to evil, they will die. But if wicked people turn from their wickedness and do what is just and right, they will live. Oh people, you are saying, ‘The Lord isn’t doing what’s right.’ But I judge each of you according to your deeds.”

Thus says the Sovereign Lord!

Genuine Christianity – John Wesley – 2

great sermons header
main pic - john wesleyJohn Wesley (June 28, 1703 – March 2, 1791) was an English cleric, theologian, and evangelist, who was a leader of a revival movement within the Church of England known as Methodism. Wesley argued for the notion of Christian perfection and against Calvinism—and, in particular, against its doctrine of predestination. His evangelicalism, firmly grounded in sacramental theology, maintained that means of grace sometimes had a role in sanctification of the believer; however, he taught that it was by faith a believer was transformed into the likeness of Christ. He held that, in this life, Christians could achieve a state where the love of God “reigned supreme in their hearts”, giving them not only outward but inward holiness. Wesley’s teachings, collectively known as Wesleyan theology, continue to inform the doctrine of Methodist churches.

Continued Excerpt From “A Plain Account of Genuine Christianity 1753”

6. His love to these, so to all mankind, is in itself generous and disinterested, springing from no view of advantage to himself, from no regard to profit or praise; no, nor even the pleasure of loving. This is the daughter, not the parent, of his affection. By experience he knows that social love (if it mean the love of our neighbor) is absolutely, essentially different from self-love, even of the most allowable kind, just as different as the objects at which they point. And yet it is sure that, if they are under due regulations, each will give additional force to the other, ’till they mix together never to be divided.

7. And this universal, disinterested love is productive of all right affections. It is fruitful of gentleness, tenderness, sweetness; of humanity, courtesy, and affability. It makes a Christian rejoice in the virtues of all, and bear a part in their happiness at the same time that he sympathizes with their pains and compassionates their infirmities. It creates modesty, condescension, prudence—together with calmness and evenness of temper. It is the parent of generosity, openness, and frankness, void of jealousy and suspicion. It begets candor and willingness to believe and hope whatever is kind and friendly of every man; and invincible patience, never overcome of evil, but overcoming evil with good.

8. The same love constrains him to converse not only with a strict regard to truth but with artless sincerity and genuine simplicity, as one in whom there is no guile. And not content with abstaining from all such expressions as are contrary to justice or truth, he endeavors to refrain from every unloving word, either to a present or of an absent person; in all his conversation aiming at this, either to improve himself in knowledge or virtue, or to make those with whom he converses some way wiser, or better, or happier than they were before.

9. The same love is productive of all right actions. It leads him into an earnest and steady discharge of all social offices, of whatever is due to relations of every kind: to his friends, to his country and to any particular community whereof he is a member. It prevents his willingly hurting or grieving any man. It guides him into a uniform practice of justice and mercy, equally extensive with the principle whence it flows. It constrains him to do all possible good, of every possible kind, to all men; and makes him invariably resolved in every circumstance of life to do that, and that only, to others, which supposing he were himself in the same situation, he would desire they should do to him.

10. And as he is easy to others, so he is easy in himself. He is free from the painful swellings of pride, from the flames of anger, from the impetuous gusts of irregular self-will. He is no longer tortured with envy or malice, or with unreasonable and hurtful desire. He is no more enslaved to the pleasures of sense, but has the full power both over his mind and body, in a continued cheerful course of sobriety, of temperance and chastity. He knows how to use all things in their place and yet is superior to them all. He stands above those low pleasures of imagination which captivate vulgar minds, whether arising from what mortals term greatness, or novelty or beauty. All these too he can taste and still look upward, still aspire to nobler enjoyments. Neither is he a slave to fame: popular breath affects not him; he stands steady and collected in himself.

It’s Who You Know . . .

thought of day header

For Sunday May 22, 2022:

IT’S WHO YOU KNOW . . .

John 17:3 (NKJV)
This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God,
and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

At the world’s trendiest nightspots and restaurants, long lines are formed by those who want to be admitted. They stand behind velvet ropes under the watchful eye of those who keep the door. Suddenly, an individual walks past the long line of hopefuls, catches the eye of the doorkeeper, and is motioned forward. The clasp on the velvet rope is released, the door is opened, and the favored guest is granted entrance, leaving all the rest to wonder, Who does he know that we don’t know?

It’s from those kinds of situations in life that the familiar expression arose: “It’s not what you know but who you know that matters.” And that is definitely true when it comes to eternal life. Jesus said that not everyone who called Him “Lord” would enter the Kingdom of Heaven. To those who practice lawlessness, His reply to their “Lord, Lord,” will be, “I never knew you” (Matthew 7:21–23). There is a difference in knowing about God and actually knowing Him. And only by knowing Him do the doors to the Kingdom of Heaven and eternal life open.

Do you know God or only know about Him? Gaining access to a restaurant brings enjoyment for an evening. Gaining access to heaven brings joy forever.

Oh, the fullness . . . of knowing God on earth!

Philemon Verses 8-9

Philemon 1:8-9, Therefore, though I might be very bold in Christ to command you what is fitting, yet for love’s sake I rather appeal to you—being such a one as Paul, the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ . . .

In the last lesson we studied and considered how the Apostle Paul addressed the character, love AND the deeds of his friend, Philemon. We saw the wisdom that Paul used just in the greeting, but also showed that for the time the Apostle was living in, he was still following a very common course of writing before getting into the body of his letter and the ultimate reason for writing it.

Paul now comes to the main purpose of the letter. In past letters, he has been writing with a sense of urgency concerning church doctrine and behavior. His lessons were always punctuated with the ways to avoid the heresies that were already going around and trying to insert themselves into the infant church. Here though, Paul is NOT delving into doctrine involving ecclesia, the church, but rather than with the authority he has behind him, he is making a plea for the relationship between individuals as in regard to Christian behavior in a more personal way.

Paul reminds Philemon that yes, he does have the authority in Christ Jesus to make a command as to an expected behavior, but rather than resorting to that, he makes his plea based on love’s sake, a basis for which he has already applauded Philemon for manifesting with others among his circle of relationships.

et john 15_12

It is very plausible that Paul could have commanded Philemon and relied on Philemon’s duty as a believer of Christ Jesus and Philemon would most likely even obey the Apostle’s directive. The question however, and especially in regards to the runaway, Onesimus, what kind of reception would that have incurred with his return?

Here is something else as well; in the society at the time, Philemon, according to the law of the land was well within his right to do whatever he saw fit with Onesimus. Paul is not disputing that or even mentioning that. Again, Paul’s letter is not and indictment, one way or the other on the subject of slavery, but rather, a manifest on the way a Christian should treat another and especially one that has also given their lives in surrender to Jesus Christ. Today, the clearest example would be a Christian employee working for a Christian employer or owner of a business. In fact, the Christian employee should consider his role in ANY regard, whether the employer is a Christian or not. We should work as if we are working for Christ Jesus.

I will admit to you right now, this was always a hard thing for me to do with an unbeliever until later on in my life in the secular field. The reason isn’t that I didn’t want and didn’t try to give my bosses MORE than a hundred percent, it was that lies and deceit came into play in the work relationship, I had a hard time keeping my mouth shut. The fields of my secular work were always in the field of service to other customers and I would not, to the best of my ability ever deceive a customer but this in turn also caused a lot of friction, at times, between a boss who expected me to do exactly and precisely what I was told and my integrity as a Christian.

*As a side note, I will let you know that I was NOT the perfect employee in ALL my jobs, for in one job I had backslid for a while and did harm to an employer’s business. If it was not for the grace and mercy of God and my crying out to Him, I would have paid for my sin for a long, long time. That however is a testimony for another time. Remember, each and everyone of us is flawed when we come to Jesus.

I needed to insert that side note in so that people wouldn’t think I was always the way Christ meant for me to be, because I most certainly wasn’t though for the most of my career in the secular field, I tried to work with honor and integrity. The letter to Philemon was a big help but especially a GREAT reminder as I tried to get in and study it a bit more in depth.

et not of world

Remember what Jesus stated as recorded by the Apostle John; “They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.” – John 17:16. The simple reminder is this; we are IN this world and thus have to live it and interact, but we are citizens of another Kingdom, a spiritual Kingdom, if indeed we have been reborn in Christ Jesus.

Sometimes when we are young, it is easy to become focused in a very narrow way, even if we are a Christian, and in the day in and day out work place, we can lose sight of the bigger picture. I’d love to say I wish I could go back and redo some things in relation to some of my employers and yet, through repentance and continued learning in the Lord, I like to think I have gone beyond those things of my youth. I most likely would not understand to the depth I do today, if I had not had some of those experiences. In that sense, I can definitely see a great correlation in Paul’s letter to Philemon.

I can imagine, at least to a degree, what must have been on the Apostle’s mind. If he didn’t win over Philemon’s heart, then Onesimus would most likely return to a very cold, cold reception. But Paul was pleading to Philemon’s sense of love that he had already characterized with others within the church. So rather than commanding Philemon, Paul appealed “for love’s sake,” calling on Philemon to consider a higher thought process than normal.

Paul was relying again on Philemon’s character of demonstrating love to others within the fold, but Paul also put in another little hint that might have added some impacted to his request; Paul reminded Philemon that he was getting up in age, we’re not certain how old, probably between about 55 and 63 roughly, which is not necessarily old by today’s standard, but Paul had lived a rough life in service to the Lord and so he also added to his statement of age, that he is also a prisoner for the sake of Christ Jesus.

These are two points that could impact what and how Philemon would be thinking. Paul wasn’t just an authority figure in the sense of being an Apostle, but the aged were also revered as to their experience and gathered wisdom. Top that off with the fact that he was also “presumably” in chains at that time, and the appeal for love’s sake, it might make Philemon consider more seriously his request. Paul was laying down a very solid foundation for his appeal. Yet he was doing it all for the sake of his love for Onesimus, yes, but also for Philemon that through his conduct, he would further his demonstration of love and thus be a continued example to others in how to love others while abiding in Christ Jesus. Remember, the church was meeting in Philemon’s house. They would most certainly witness many things. I’m sure the Apostle mentioned that in the very beginning so that this fact would also be on Philemon’s heart and mind.

et paul in chains

Since the Apostle AND friend to Philemon was making his appeal based on Philemon’s love of others and of Christ, I’m sure that Paul was counting on Philemon’s sympathy concerning Paul’s age and his situation in captivity. Again, it wasn’t mind games that Paul was playing, but he WAS laying a very solid foundation in favor of Christ-like love towards another!

As I stated last time, there is a lot to glean from this simple appearing letter. It is easy to skim over, until you start to consider each and every nuance and the motive AND teaching behind it! These letters and the other books of the Bible, aren’t just for history and information to make us “smarter” or more educated. Rather they are inspired and given by the Holy Spirit to show us more clearly the nature and character of God AND to be able to apply its principles in practical ways to our daily lives. Something to consider the next time you decide to read one of the shorter letters!

Next post we will begin with Philemon verse 8.

Prayer for Friday 5-20-2022

Lord our God, give us Your Spirit, we pray, that we may learn to understand what we are and what tasks You have set for us. We thank You for all the light You give us. Grant that we and many others may come closer to knowledge of the truth and be at peace about all that belongs in Your hands, our Father in Heaven. Keep us now and forevermore in Your almighty hand. May we know Your goodness and the blessing it brings. For through Your goodness we can endure even the hardest days and be victorious in the battle of life. We thank You and give You praise in Your Son’s name, Jesus Christ.

Amen.

God Was, That’s All! – A.W. Tozer

thought of day header

For Friday May 20, 2022:

GOD WAS, THAT’S ALL!

Psalm 93:2 (NKJV)
Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting.

God never began to be. I want you to kick that word “began” around a little bit in your mind and think about it. “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1), but God Himself never began to be! “Began” is a word that doesn’t affect God at all. There are many concepts and ideas that don’t touch God at all, such as the concept of beginning or creation, when God spoke and things began to be. “In the beginning God created”—but before the beginning, there wasn’t any “beginning”; there wasn’t any “before”! The old theologians used to say that eternity is a circle. Round and round the circle we go, but back before there was any circle, God was!

God didn’t begin to be—God was. God didn’t start out from somewhere—God just is. . . .

But there never was a time when God was not! No one said, “Let God be”! Otherwise, the one who said “Let God be” would have to be God. And the one about whom He said “Let him be” wouldn’t be God at all, but a secondary “god” who wouldn’t be worth our trouble. God, back there in the beginning, created. God was, that’s all!

Is America In Bible Prophecy? – Book Review

prophetic words header wp

Pastor’s Note: I am reading a wonderful book by Ron Rhodes entitled: 8 Great Debates of Bible Prophecy: Understanding the Ongoing Controversies. Actually, I’m studying it rather than just reading it, because over the years and being involved in the Pentecostal and Charismatic teachings, I have always felt there was too much emphasis placed on prophecy as a predicter of tomorrow and less about what it tells us as to what God wants us to do in the light of it. I do however believe very strongly in prophecy!

Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets. – Amos 3:7.

This is a fascinating book and Mr. Rhodes takes you step by step through the various controversies, but also gives you a view of how to use the Bible itself to interpret the prophecies within. My teaching for years has always been to allow the Scriptures to themselves confirm the Scriptures and especially when it comes to doctrines and denominational differences.

Anyway; I’ve been wanting to share some of his chapter on how America fits in and so I have taken some highlights from his chapter. I am NOT altering it in anyway other than using some sections and leaving other sections out for those who find the material interesting for themselves. Also understand that the Author is using Prophesies from the Bible and not Prophesying himself. He is only discussing scenarios that line up with Scripture in relation to world events.

All credit goes to the Author and the Publisher. Credit at end of article.

Is America In Bible Prophecy?

The question of whether America is mentioned in biblical prophecy has been the subject of much debate through the years. Some say yes, and others say no. Many theories on the issue have been speculative and far-fetched. Others have taken a more reasoned approach.

Some prophecy enthusiasts believe that Bible prophecy includes no direct references to the United States, but it may mention America indirectly. Here are some possible indirect references.

One of the Nations

Many suggest that a number of general prophetic references to “the nations” in the tribulation period are likely to include the United States.

  • Events in Israel will become a cause of stumbling for the nations of the earth (Zechariah 12:2-3).
  • God will “shake all nations” (Haggai 2:6-7).
  • God will be glorified among the nations (Isaiah 66:18-20).

Of course, even though such passages may indeed include the United States, they do not tell us anything specific about the role of the United States in the end times.

Cooperation with Europe

Though the United States is not specifically mentioned in biblical prophecy, some suggest the possibility that a weakened United States—no longer a superpower—may become an ally with the United States of Europe (the revived Roman Empire) early in the tribulation period. After all, most citizens of the United States have roots in Europe and would likely be more open to allying with Europe than with any other geopolitical entity.

Eventually the antichrist, who begins as the ruler of the revived Roman Empire, will achieve global dominion. The United States will likely be subsumed in the globalism that will emerge and prevail during the tribulation. Even in our day, our present government administration seems to be moving us away from American national sovereignty and is open to handling more and more problems in a global way.

Related to this, when Armageddon breaks out at the end of the tribulation period, troops from around the world will stand against Israel, and troops from the United States may be included. After all, Zechariah 12:3 tells us, “On that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples. All who lift it will surely hurt themselves. And all the nations of the earth will gather against it.” The phrase “all the nations of the earth” would seem to include the United States.

Zechariah 14:2 likewise states, “I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city shall be taken and the houses plundered and the women raped. Half the city shall go out into exile, but the rest of the people shall not be cut off from the city.” Again, “all the nations” would seem to include the United States.

Revelation 16:14 reveals that “the kings of the whole world” will be gathered together “for battle on the great day of God the Almighty.” The “kings of the whole world” would apparently include the commander in chief of the US military.

You may be wondering how such a thing could ever happen. Keep in mind that following the rapture of the church, there will not be any Christians on the earth—including in the United States, where many Christians presently live. This means that many of the people in the United States who have long supported Israel will no longer be around to do so, but will be with the Lord in heaven. It is easy to see how a Christian-less United States could ally with the revived Roman Empire and then find itself in league with the antichrist during the tribulation period.

Possible Moral Implosion

Some suggest that America is not mentioned in Bible prophecy because it may eventually implode due to ever-escalating moral and spiritual degeneration. This is a real possibility. Alarming statistics reveal the moral and spiritual trouble in this country.

  • Four out of five adults—some 83 percent—say they are concerned about the moral condition of the United States.
  • Most Americans believe that gambling (61 percent), cohabitation (60 percent), and sexual fantasies (59 percent) are morally acceptable.
  • Nearly half of Americans believe that having an abortion (45 percent) and having a sexual relationship with someone of the opposite sex other than their spouse (42 percent) are morally acceptable.
  • About one-third of Americans give the stamp of approval to pornography (38 percent), profanity (36 percent), drunkenness (35 percent) and homosexual sex (30 percent).

If the moral fiber of this country continues to erode, the demise of this country may be only a matter of time.

Nuclear Attack

Another possibility is that the United States is not mentioned in Bible prophecy because it will be destroyed or greatly weakened by a nuclear attack and will play no significant role in the end times. This scenario may be hard to swallow for some Americans. However, there is certainly a good chance that the United States will be attacked with nuclear weapons at some point in the future. Government advisors are presently saying that a nuclear attack on US soil within the next ten years is more likely than not.

I personally think it’s a stretch to say the entire United States could be destroyed. However, if a major city—New York City, Los Angeles, or Chicago for example—were destroyed, this would have a devastating and long-lasting effect on the US economy.

Nuclear terrorism is not merely the talk of sensationalists or alarmists. Some of the greatest thinkers in our land are sounding warning bells. National security experts say the risk of attack by weapons of mass destruction within the next decade may be as high as 70 percent. Some US senators are saying the United States faces an existential threat from terrorists who may get their hands on weapons of mass destruction. In the next decade, they say, we face the very real possibility of nuclear jihad.

The United States faces the problem of having many easy entrances. A terrorist could easily smuggle a nuclear bomb across US borders or into its ports. Only 5 percent of the 50,000 cargo containers shipped into the United States each day get screened. That leaves 95 percent that remain unscreened. A bomb could easily make its way into the country in one of the unscreened containers.

A terrorist group could also launch a nuclear weapon from a commercial ship off the coast of the United States. About 75 percent of the US population lives within 200 miles of the coast. With more than 130,000 registered merchant ships sailing off US coastal waters, the nuclear danger is obvious.

EMP Attack

Yet another possibility is that the United States is not mentioned in Bible prophecy because the country may become incapacitated due to an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack. This realistic possibility is documented in a report issued in 2004 by a blue-ribbon commission created by Congress. In the report, titled “Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse Attack,” some government officials lamented that the technology is now here to bring the American way of life to an end.

According to the report, a single nuclear weapon delivered by a missile to an altitude of a few hundred miles and detonated over the United States would yield catastrophic damage to the nation. Such a missile could easily be launched from a freighter off the coast of the United States. The commission explained that the higher the altitude of the weapon’s detonation, the larger the affected geographic area would be. At a height of 300 miles, the entire continental United States would be exposed along with parts of Canada and Mexico.

The electromagnetic pulse produced by such a weapon would be likely to severely damage or knock out electrical power systems, electronics, and information systems—which Americans daily depend on. At high risk would be electronic control, the infrastructures for handling electric power, sensors and protective systems of all kinds, computers, cell phones, telecommunications, cars, boats, airplanes, trains, fuel and energy, banking and finance, emergency services, and even food and water. Anything controlled or delivered electronically is at risk.

American society would be catastrophically affected because the infrastructure of our society—civilian and military—virtually runs on electricity and electronic components. The commission estimated that it could take “months to years” to fully recover from such an attack.

Starvation and disease could even follow in some parts of the United States following an EMP attack. Expert testimony presented before the US Congress indicated that an EMP attack could reduce the United States to a pre–Industrial Age capacity in terms of transportation options and the ability to provide food and water to the general population. Instead of cars, buses, and trains, people would be reduced to using bikes, horses, and buggies.

Weakened by the Rapture

Still other Christians suggest that the United States is not mentioned in Bible prophecy because the United States will be decimated by the rapture. It seems fair to say that because of the large population of Christians in the United States, the negative effect of the rapture will be greater in America than in most other nations.

Following the moment of the rapture, many employees will no longer show up for work, many bills and mortgages will go unpaid, many college tuition bills and loans will go unpaid, many business leaders will no longer show up to lead their companies, many law enforcement personnel will no longer be here to keep the peace, and the stock market will likely crash because of the ensuing panic. This and much more will result following the rapture.

A Combination Scenario

Several of these scenarios could take place concurrently, and their combined effect could greatly weaken the United States. For example, America could morally implode, a nuclear weapon could detonate in an American city, and the rapture could happen. The combined effect would cause the United States to plummet.

Of course, as an American patriot, I want only the best for this country. However, the scenarios I have described above are entirely possible. They are consistent with what we know of Bible prophecy.

A Historical Note: Great Civilizations Can Fall

Many great nations have risen and fallen throughout human history. In each case, the nation probably had no expectation of its impending demise. Most of the citizens of these nations were not likely to expect their nation to fall. The harsh reality of documented history, however, is that great nations do fall.

  • The Babylonians never thought Babylon would fall, but its demise came in less than a century.
  • The Persians never thought the Persian Empire would fall, but it finally capitulated after about two centuries.
  • The Greeks never thought Greece would fall, but it waned in less than three centuries.
  • No one thought the mighty Roman Empire would decline, but it waned after holding out for nine centuries.

Is the United States invincible? We tend to think we are special—that we will succeed where others have failed. But such a mentality may be as arrogant as it is unwise. Research demonstrates that many of the fallen civilizations in history also thought they were superior to their neighbors and forebears. Few of their citizens could imagine their society would one day collapse.

God Controls Nations

God is absolutely sovereign over human affairs. God rules the universe, controls all things, and is Lord over all (see Ephesians 1). Nothing can happen in this universe that is beyond the reach of His control. All forms of existence are within the scope of His absolute dominion. God asserts, “My counsel shall stand, and I accomplish all my purpose” (Isaiah 46:10). God assures us, “As I have planned, so shall it be, and as I have purposed, so it shall stand” (Isaiah 14:24).

God is certainly sovereign over the affairs of individual nations in the world. Scripture reveals that God “makes nations great, and he destroys them; he enlarges nations, and leads them away” (Job 12:23). We are told that “he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place” (Acts 17:26).

What does this mean for the United States? God is absolutely sovereign over the nations, and He is a holy God of judgment. Therefore, is it possible that God may sovereignly judge America in the end times for turning away from Him?

Those who doubt this possibility should consult what the apostle Paul says in Romans 1:18-28. If this passage tells us anything, it warns that when a nation willfully rejects God and His Word, God eventually reveals His wrath against that nation. One way God reveals His wrath is by allowing the people of that nation to experience the full brunt of the ravaging consequences of their sin.

Consider America’s high prevalence of pornography, premarital sex, extramarital sex, homosexuality, same-sex marriages, abortions, alcohol and drug abuse, divorce, and much more. America is presently in a dangerous place!

God’s judgment on America for its moral and spiritual degeneracy in the end times could be just one more reason why global power will shift away from the United States of America to the United States of Europe in the end times. Rome will rise again with the antichrist as her ruler.

Conclusion

My personal assessment is that America is not mentioned in Bible prophecy. I also believe America is likely to weaken in the end times. More specifically, I believe that America will continue to plummet morally, that weapons of mass destruction may well be detonated on American soil, and that when the rapture occurs, America will suffer more than most other countries.

Forgiveness – C.H. Spurgeon

thought of day header

For Thursday May 19, 2022:

FORGIVENESS

Isaiah 43:25 (NKJV)
“I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake;
And I will not remember your sins.”

There are some passages of scripture which have been more abundantly blessed to the conversion of souls than others. They may be called salvation texts. We may not be able to discover how it is, or why it is, but certainly it is the fact, that some chosen verses have been more used of God to bring men to the cross of Christ than any others in his Word. Certainly they are not more inspired, but I suppose they are more noticeable from their position, from their peculiar phraseology more adapted to catch the eye of the reader, and more suitable to a prevailing spiritual condition. All the stars in the heavens shine very brightly, but only a few attract the eye of the mariner, and direct his course; the reason is this, that those few stars from their peculiar grouping are more readily distinguished, and the eye easily fixes upon them. So I suppose it is with those passages of God’s Word which especially attract attention, and direct the sinner to the cross of Christ. It so happens that this text is one of the chief of them. I have found it, in my experience, to be a most useful one; for out of the hundreds of persons who have come to me to narrate their conversion and experience, I have found a very large proportion who have traced the divine change which has been wrought in their hearts to the hearing of this precious declaration of sovereign mercy read, and the application of it with power to their souls: “I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.”
