Reflecting With God 5/31/2022

reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

All Scriptures Used are NKJV, New King James Version

For Tuesday May 31, 2022:

Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. – Genesis 1:3

God said, Let there be light: and there was light. How simple! And yet how Godlike! “He spake, and it was done. He commanded, and it stood fast.” Infidelity may ask, “How? where? when?” The answer is, “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”

Daily Prayer & Praise 5/30/2022

Prayer for Monday 5-30-2022

Lord our God, O Holy One, we thank You that we may lay aside our own nature and be lifted in spirit above all that is temporal and human and have joy in You. In spite of all the evil surrounding us, in spite of the thousandfold misery of humankind, we may still rejoice in You, in all You do and will yet do for us. Grant that we may go on rejoicing, having joy together, helping instead of burdening each other, until this earth is filled with the jubilation of those You have so richly blest. Forgive us all our sins. Heal us in mind and body. Deliver us from all the corruption that tries to take hold of our souls. In Jesus’ most precious name, we ask.

Amen.

He Knows Everything – A.W. Tozer

thought of day header

For Monday May 30, 2022:

HE KNOWS EVERYTHING

Hebrews 4:13 (NKJV)
And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open
to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

God’s understanding is limitless . . . His knowledge is perfect, and . . . there isn’t a creature anywhere in the universe that isn’t plainly visible to His sight. Nothing is shut before the eyes of God. That is what is called divine omniscience, one of the attributes of God. An attribute, as I have said before, is something which God has declared to be true about Himself.

God has declared by divine revelation that He is omniscient, that He knows everything. The human mind staggers under this truth when we consider how much there is to know and how little we know. . . .

When I received one of the honorary degrees that have been bestowed on me, I said, “The only thing that is learned about me is this pair of glasses.” If a man has his hair slicked back and a pair of learned-looking glasses, they call him a doctor. We don’t know very much, really, and when we consider the great God who knows all there is to know with perfection of knowledge, we stagger under that. The weight of the truth is too much for our minds.

Special Prayer For The Lost

*Pastor’s Note: With all going on in the world and especially this week in the U.S., I felt especially burdened to seek the Lord.

I just read this statement the other day and it’s good to remember: Prayer is NOT meant to inform God of what is going on around us for He is already aware and knows all things. Prayer, on the other hand, is meant to ask God to move on behalf of the needs we are asking about and to seek His perfect will so that our will lines up with His.

1 Thessalonians 5:15b – 18, “Always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all. Rejoice always, PRAY WITHOUT CEASING, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (NKJV) [Bold emphasis mine].

Heavenly and Holy Father;

We come to You today, humbly and in awe of Your majesty and ultimate sovereignty. You are more than worthy of all the praise that we can give You and we don’t praise You as You deserve. Forgive us for that, but see our hearts as only You can do and RENEW our minds daily to love You, to thank You and to praise You without ceasing.

Lord, there is so much going on in the world and while we truly do know that You are in control and that Your plans are unfolding before us, there are a lot of people who are living in spiritual darkness and are lost. Your Word tells us that with man many things are just impossible but with You, ANYTHING is possible and we truly and sincerely pray for lost souls. Father, we beseech You for our loved ones that are not walking in Your light. Draw them to You by Your Holy Spirit. If we can be the servants You want to utilize, then Lord, let Your light AND Your love shine through us to them!

We ask for the lost in the world and especially those caught up in wars and civil conflicts. They need You as much, if not more, than others. They need to see that You ARE a God of hope. There are too many on the brink of giving up on this life and contemplating suicide. Every community Lord that we live in is being plagued by that but You ARE the God, the Creator, the Originator of all hope. Please Lord, for the sake of Your glory and the sake of Your name, draw these lost souls to You and anoint Your children to be the vessels necessary to serve You.

For our leaders, so many who have outright rejected You and Your precepts, we pray for wisdom, something that seems to be sorely lacking today. Again, we KNOW You ARE in charge, but we lift them up to You. If they don’t know You, save their souls, open their blinded eyes and deaf ears to hear what You are trying to say to lead them forward in Your perfect will. Help us to never forget to pray for them, whether we agree with them or not. They ARE Your creation and such, You desire that none should perish. Help us make that our heart cry as well.

For my brothers and sisters, Father, I so lift them up to You. We intercede on their behalf whatever the needs may be. If health, give them speedy recoveries and instill in them the joy that You have for them. Give them comfort and peace that the world just can’t. If they are mentally or emotionally hurting, remind them through You Holy Spirit that a SOUND mind comes from You and Your Word is always true! Take away any fears or doubts and let them walk with confidence and assurance that You are always with them and will NEVER leave them or forsake Your children, Your called.

Lord, again with give You all the praise You deserve and in anticipation of Your answers, Father, we give You thanks from the depths of our being. Let Your name, let Your character be glorified among all people through each of us. For Your sake and the sake of our Savior and Redeemer, for the glory of Your Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ, we sincerely ask all these things of You, today!

Amen and AMEN!

Genuine Christianity – John Wesley – 3

great sermons header
main pic - john wesleyJohn Wesley (June 28, 1703 – March 2, 1791) was an English cleric, theologian, and evangelist, who was a leader of a revival movement within the Church of England known as Methodism. Wesley argued for the notion of Christian perfection and against Calvinism—and, in particular, against its doctrine of predestination. His evangelicalism, firmly grounded in sacramental theology, maintained that means of grace sometimes had a role in sanctification of the believer; however, he taught that it was by faith a believer was transformed into the likeness of Christ. He held that, in this life, Christians could achieve a state where the love of God “reigned supreme in their hearts”, giving them not only outward but inward holiness. Wesley’s teachings, collectively known as Wesleyan theology, continue to inform the doctrine of Methodist churches.

Continued Excerpt From “A Plain Account of Genuine Christianity 1753”

11. And he who seeks no praise cannot fear dispraise. Censure gives him no uneasiness, being conscious to himself that he would not willingly offend and that he has the approbation of the Lord of all. He cannot fear want, knowing in whose hand is the earth and the fulness thereof and that it is impossible for him to withhold from one that fears him any manner of thing that is good. He cannot fear pain, knowing it will never be sent unless it be for his real advantage, and that then his strength will be proportioned to it, as it has always been in times past. He cannot fear death, being able to trust him he loves with his soul as well as his body, yes, glad to leave the corruptible body in the dust, ’till it is raised, incorruptible and immortal. So that, in honor or shame, in abundance or want, in ease or pain, in life or death, always and in all things, he has learned to be content, to be easy, thankful, joyful, happy.

12. He is happy in knowing there is a God—an intelligent Cause and Lord of all—and that he is not the produce either of blind chance or inexorable necessity. He is happy in the full assurance he has that this Creator and End of all things is a being of boundless wisdom, of infinite power to execute all the designs of his wisdom and of no less infinite goodness to direct all his power to the advantage of all his creatures. Nay, even the consideration of his immutable justice, rendering to all their due, of his unspotted holiness, of his all-sufficiency in himself, and of that immense ocean of all perfections which center in God from eternity to eternity, is a continual addition to the happiness of a Christian.

13. A farther addition is made thereto while, in contemplating even the things that surround him, that thought strikes warmly upon his heart—

These are your glorious works, Parent of Good! while he takes knowledge of the invisible things of God, even his eternal power and wisdom in the things that are seen, the heavens, the earth, the fowls of the air, the lilies of the field. How much more, while, rejoicing in the constant care which he still takes of the work of his own hand, he breaks out in a transport of love and praise, O Lord our Governor! How excellent is your Name in all the earth; you that have set your glory above the heavens!—while he, as it were, sees the Lord sitting upon his throne and ruling all things well; while he observes the general providence of God co-extended with his whole creation and surveys all the effects of it in the heavens and earth, as a well-pleased spectator; while he sees the wisdom and goodness of his general government descending to every particular, so presiding over the whole universe as over a single person, so watching over every single person as if he were the whole universe—how does he exult when he reviews the various traces of the Almighty Goodness in what has befallen himself in the several circumstances and changes of his own life, all which he now sees have been allotted to him and dealt out in number, weight, and measure. With what triumph of soul, in surveying either the general or particular providence of God, does he observe every line pointing out an hereafter, every scene opening into eternity?

14. He is peculiarly and inexpressibly happy in the clearest and fullest conviction: “This all-powerful, all-wise, all-gracious Being, this Governor of all, loves me. This lover of my soul is always with me, is never absent; no, not for a moment. And I love him: there is none in heaven but thee, none on earth that I desire beside thee! And he has given me to resemble himself; he has stamped his image on my heart. And I live unto him; I do only his will; I glorify him with my body and my spirit. And it will not be long before I shall die unto him, I shall die into the arms of God. And then farewell sin and pain, then it only remains that I should live with him forever.”

15. This is the plain, naked portraiture of a Christian. But be not prejudiced against him for his name. Forgive his particularities of opinion and (what you think) superstitious modes of worship. These are circumstances but of small concern and do not enter into the essence of his character. Cover them with a veil of love and look at the substance: his tempers, his holiness, his happiness. Can calm reason conceive either a more amiable or a more desirable character?

Is it your own? Away with names! Away with opinions! I care not what you are called. I ask not (it does not deserve a thought) what opinion you are of, so you are conscious to yourself that you are the man whom I have been (however faintly) describing.

Do not you know you ought to be such? Is the Governor of the world well pleased that you are not?

Do you at least desire it? I would to God that desire may penetrate your inmost soul and that you may have no rest in your spirit ’till you are not only almost but altogether a Christian!

The End to “A Plain Account of Genuine Christianity 1753”

The Imminence of the Rapture

prophetic words header wp

Pastor’s Note: Almost two weeks ago, I posted an article entitled Is America In Bible Prophecy? taken from the book by Ron Rhodes entitled: 8 Great Debates of Bible Prophecy: Understanding the Ongoing Controversies. I had been studying it quite a bit, not just reading it and the way he outlines the different debates and lays out the Scriptures to me is very impressive. Well, this same book helped me in something this week.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-21, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.” KNJV (Bold emphasis, added).

Well, this past week, someone I considered a close brother in the Lord posted a piece by a self-proclaimed prophet that very emphatically stated that if you preach or teach ANYTHING other than post-tribulation rapture, you are a false prophet and false teacher that is possibly leading thousands, if not millions to their deaths needlessly and prematurely by teaching them anything other than that.

Well, of course I responded and asked my brother if he realized that the article was condemning many Bible teachers and preachers who may have a somewhat different view of the timing of the Rapture, even though they still teach “Christ and Him crucified and salvation by grace through faith”? I tried to let him know that differing opinions on the TIMING of the Rapture does not detract from whether you are a brother or sister in Christ. I told him, after all, I teach something different and I allow the Holy Spirit to do what He will with the teaching. I didn’t state my differences, just that I had a different idea. He emphatically stated that even though he didn’t write the post, he stands by it and what this “prophet” stated. He has studied the Scriptures and he posted the article because he believes exactly the same way! In other words, if you don’t believe EXACTLY the way they do, you are branded a false prophet or false teacher. I will be honest, it did floor me and I’m almost seventy years old and have been floored by many things, but this really hit me. I truly had to pray and seek the Lord’s guidance with this.

With all the denominations that make up the “Christian” world, there are bound to be differences. Most of those differences do NOT disagree with “Christ and Him crucified and salvation by grace through faith.” We can and SHOULD accept one another as brothers and sisters despite differences that have no conflict with the very reason that causes us to be spiritual brothers and sisters.

pw brothers sisters

Almost all denominations believe there IS going to be a Rapture, even if it’s not called that in English Bibles, it is still the snatching or carrying away of all believers in Christ Jesus, to meet Him in the air, first the dead then those who are alive. There are some who believe in no Rapture or even partial Rapture and to be honest, their scriptural basis doesn’t make sense. But for the rest, whether it is pre-tribulation, mid-tribulation or even, post-tribulation the one thing we have in common is that there WILL be a snatching away of God’s Church! The only difference is in the timing. My rhetorical question is this; how in the world is that going to detract from our salvation or makes us as unbelievers rather than brothers and sisters in Christ.

Remember what Jesus, Himself stated, “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.” – Matthew 24:36 (NASB). Now as a side note, (I won’t get into a debate about this) almost every version of the Bible states it similarly except the NKJV (which I use the most) and the KJV (the Authorized or 1611 version), these leave out “nor the Son.”

The fact is, Jesus is telling us, in essence, the timing to call the Church unto the Son, is in the Father’s hands and when the Father says “go get Your Bride,” that is when Jesus will meet us in the clouds! The TIMING therefore is totally AND perfectly in the plans and will of the Father!

HOWEVER; the time for Christ to return is IMMINENT. I’ll bet when you read the title, you were thinking that I’m another crack-pot with a date and time of the Lord’s return. Not so. All we CAN know is that it could be at any time. Two thousand years ago, it could have been at any moment. Today, it could be at any moment.

The term imminent means that something is ready to take place or the event is impending, able to happen at any moment. The Bible speaks of this event as being at hand (Philippians 4:5), we are to be patient, for the Judge is at the door (James 5:7-9). Other verses tell us to eagerly wait, to continue until the time appointed and so forth. There are so many Scriptures that tell us it can take place at any given time.

pw kingdom comes

The Apostle Paul wrote this; Do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed. The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. – Romans 13:11-12.

In this Scripture the word salvation is actually referring to when the Lord literally saves us or snatches us away, in other words, what we refer to as the Rapture. He speaks of waking from sleep and the night is almost gone, both referring to this temporary life. The day he speaks of, is when we step over that threshold into eternity. Even in his day, he knew the time was impending.

Another thing most people have not studied for themselves is the fact that there are no signs, no prophecies leading up to the Rapture. It is a sign-less event and can occur at any moment. Everyone thinks that end times signs must be fulfilled for the Rapture to take place, yet all the Bible tells us is the very thing Jesus Himself stated just before He declared no one knows the time; “Now learn the parable from the fig tree: when its branch has already become tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near; So, you too, when you see all these things, recognize that He is near, right at the door.” – Matthew 24:32-33. Right at the door, again, imminent, impending.

Think of this; if the disciples soon after Jesus ascended believed AND taught, that the time could be anytime, and that was back over two-thousand years ago, how much closer do you imagine the Rapture could be today?!

Paul wrote Titus and told him this in regards to the coming of the Lord; For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. – Titus 2:11-14.

If we, as Christians, are looking forward to that “blessed hope” and the “appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus,” doesn’t it have the motivation to spur us on to live in purity (holiness) and righteousness as much as we can?

pw come Lord Jesus

In his book, Maranatha, Our Lord, Come! Renald E. Showers stated:

The fact that the glorified, holy Son of God could step through the door of heaven at any moment is intended by God to be the most pressing, incessant motivation for holy living and aggressive ministry (including missions, evangelism, and Bible teaching) and the greatest cure for lethargy and apathy. It should make a difference in every Christian’s values, actions, priorities, and goals.[1]

Imminence, as a doctrine, truly only makes sense when you take into account all the Scriptures and details associated with pre-tribulation Rapture, only because of the fact that there are no signs or prophecies signifying its timing. In post-tribulation Rapture, you would look for it after the seven years of tribulation, therefore it wouldn’t be impending. In mid-tribulation Rapture, again, you would be looking for it at anytime after the first three and a half years after the antichrist appears. Again, it wouldn’t be impending, you can plan for it, even if it is to a degree. These two reasons alone negate that Jesus will return for His Church, the Bride, unexpectedly.

However, whatever you believe concerning the timing of the Rapture, and you have the Scriptures you use to rely on, as Christians, we still must look forward in faith to that “blessed hope.” Again, as the writer of Hebrews so wonderfully states, And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him. – Hebrews 11:6.

So no matter how you believe, your focus must be on God’s ability to keep us through tomorrow no matter what tomorrow brings. If we lose sight of faithful trusting, then we are most certainly NOT pleasing our Heavenly Father.

What you do with your disagreements on doctrine and non-salvation issues is between you and the Lord. Myself, I would rather continue to love as God would have me to do whether we are in one-hundred percent agreement or not. The one thing I can truly give another that is of any value is Holy Spirit produced love!

pw holy spirit love

New-Fashioned Salvation

thought of day header

For Sunday May 29, 2022:

NEW-FASHIONED SALVATION

Ephesians 2:8 (NKJV)
For by grace you have been saved through faith,
and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.

In the 1980s, the Smith-Barney company made a series of commercials in which distinguished actor John Houseman spoke the famous line “We make money the old-fashioned way. We earn it!” Sometime later, based on that commercial, a Christian cartoonist showed some Pharisees arguing with Jesus about salvation. Their punch line? “We get our salvation the old-fashioned way. We earn it!”

Those Smith-Barney commercials were a success partly because they appealed to something in fallen human nature: the desire to work and pay our own way. The Bible commends that attitude in many respects (2 Thessalonians 3:10), but not when it comes to salvation. The problem with earning our salvation is that we can never do enough. Committing one sin is the same as committing them all. And once a sin is committed, it’s like a spoken word—there’s no getting it back. The biggest challenge facing the early church was helping Jewish believers set aside law and tradition as ways of trying to earn God’s approval.

Don’t try to be saved the old-fashioned way. Receive salvation the way God offers it—through Christ—as a gift of grace through faith.

The sinner, apart from grace, is unable to be willing and unwilling to be able.
W.E. BEST

The Value of Adversity

devotionals header

The Imitation of Christ, by Thomas à Kempis, is a Christian devotional book first composed in Medieval Latin as De Imitatione Christi (c. 1418–1427). The devotional text is divided into four books of detailed spiritual instructions. The devotional approach of The Imitation of Christ emphasizes the interior life and withdrawal from the mundanities of the world, as opposed to the active imitation of Christ practiced by other friars. The Imitation is perhaps the most widely read Christian devotional work after the Bible, and is regarded as a devotional and religious classic. The book was written anonymously in Latin in the Netherlands c. 1418–1427. Its popularity was immediate, and after the first printed edition in 1471-72, it was printed in 745 editions before 1650. Apart from the Bible, no book had been translated into more languages than the Imitation of Christ at the time.

THE VALUE OF ADVERSITY – THOMAS à KEMPIS

IT IS good for us to have trials and troubles at times, for they often remind us that we are on probation and ought not to hope in any worldly thing. It is good for us sometimes to suffer contradiction, to be misjudged by men even though we do well and mean well. These things help us to be humble and shield us from vainglory. When to all outward appearances men give us no credit, when they do not think well of us, then we are more inclined to seek God Who sees our hearts. Therefore, a man ought to root himself so firmly in God that he will not need the consolations of men.

When a man of good will is afflicted, tempted, and tormented by evil thoughts, he realizes clearly that his greatest need is God, without Whom he can do no good. Saddened by his miseries and sufferings, he laments and prays. He wearies of living longer and wishes for death that he might be dissolved and be with Christ. Then he understands fully that perfect security and complete peace cannot be found on earth.

Discipleship – No Limitations

anecdotal stories

The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person. – Ecclesiastes 12:13.

“So you too, when you do all the things which are commanded you, say, ‘We are unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done.'” – Luke 17:10.

Not Just What’s Expected

The mule is a genuinely intelligent animal that has proved its superiority to the horse in durability, memory, and dietary control. Pack mules have been used for years to lug gear for exploratory and recreational expeditions. They will carry seventy-five pounds on each side – but only seventy-five pounds. According to one veteran packer, if you put additional weight on a mule, it will buck the load off, refuse to move, or head for a tree to scrape the load off. These animals have sensitized their inner scales to the ounce and will haul nothing more.

Jesus warned about the mule in each of us: the spirit of mere duty that produces only what is expected and nothing more. He encourages us to go beyond that, to love Him with the same unqualified depths that He loves us. The mule has an excuse – it’s only a mule. What possible excuse could we have who are made in the image of God, redeemed in the likeness of Christ, and possessed even now of the Holy Spirit?

Applicable Quotations

Many would save themselves much sorrow and trouble if they would only remember the question—“What does it cost?” – J.C. Ryle

O speak nothing, act nothing, think nothing, but as you are taught of God! – John Wesley

If Jesus’ example is the example for the world to follow, it certainly must be feasible to follow it. But we need to remember this great fact. After we have asked the Spirit to tell us what Jesus would do and have received an answer to it, we are to act regardless of the results to ourselves. – Charles Sheldon

Let the Church awake to her calling to train the feeblest of her members to know that Christ counts upon every redeemed one to live wholly for His work. This alone is true Christianity, is full salvation. – Andrew Murray

Prayer for Friday 5-27-2022

Lord our God, our Father in Heaven, we thank You for letting us receive so much that is good in all circumstances on earth. We thank You that we can have joy in life in spite of our shortcomings, mistakes, and worries. You bless us with heavenly gifts, so that rejoicing, we can walk on earth as if in heaven. Keep the gifts of Your Spirit alive in us. Keep alive in us everything that Jesus Christ was, everything He is, and everything He will be on earth for all people. The Eternal Name – C.H. Spurgeon

thought of day header

For Friday May 27, 2022:

THE ETERNAL NAME

Psalm 72:17 (NKJV)
His name shall endure forever.

Do you see yonder thief hanging upon the cross? Behold the fiends at the foot thereof, with open mouths; charming themselves with the sweet thought, that another soul shall give them meat in hell. Behold the death-bird, fluttering his wings over the poor wretch’s head; vengeance passes by and stamps him for her own; deep on his breast is written “a condemned sinner;” on his brow is the clammy sweat, expressed from him by agony and death. Look in his heart: it is filthy with the crust of years of sin; the smoke of lust is hanging within, in black festoons of darkness; his whole heart is hell condensed. Now, look at him. He is dying. One foot seems to be in hell; the other hangs tottering in life—only kept by a nail. There is a power in Jesus’ eye. That thief looks: he whispers, “Lord, remember me.” Turn your eye again there. Do you see that thief? Where is the clammy sweat? It is there. Where is that horrid anguish? Is it not there? Positively there is a smile upon his lips. The fiends of hell where are they? There are none; but a bright seraph is present, with his wings outspread, and his hands ready to snatch that soul, now a precious jewel, and bear it aloft to the palace of the great King. Look within his heart: it is white with purity. Look at his breast: it is not written “condemned,” but “justified.” Look in the book of life: his name is engraved there. Look on Jesus’ heart: there on one of the precious stones he bears that poor thief’s name. Yes, once more, look! Do you see that bright one amid the glorified, clearer than the sun, and fair as the moon? That is the thief! That is the power of Jesus; and that power shall endure for ever.

Philemon Verses 10-11

Philemon 1:10-11, I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten while in my chains, who once was unprofitable to you, but now is profitable to you and to me.

As we have seen in the few verses we have covered already, Paul is relying on Philemon’s established character in the Lord, his love and care for the saints that meet in his home as a fledgling church and his support for those he calls brothers and sisters. Paul now gets to the “meat” or substance of his letter and thus his heartfelt appeal.

In the original language the name Onesimus actually comes last. The verse could best be rendered thus: “I am appealing to you concerning my child whom I became the father of during my imprisonment, Onesimus.” (LEB).

I can just imagine, Philemon, already in a state of mind while thinking of his friend and mentor, Paul and reading Paul’s kindhearted words and then reading of a “son” of his while in chains. Philemon most likely knew that Paul referred to most all of those he had a part in converting to Christ as sons or daughters, so it probably didn’t surprise him much, until the Apostle dropped the name, Onesimus, the slave that ran away!

Can you even begin to imagine the thought process that must have been going on in Philemon’s mind? He must have been completely and totally surprised and disarmed. We all know what it’s like to hear something that we least expect, that takes us by total surprise! Can you imagine his surprise when the name of that rascal, Onesimus was mentioned? The thoughts that must have been immediately going through his mind. Yet right there, the Apostle calls Onesimus his son, whom he had “begotten while in chains.” Paul was relaying to Philemon that somehow Paul had led Onesimus to Christ Jesus.

Somehow, some way, when Onesimus ran away and escaped, he ran into Paul while in Rome. A Greek tradition that was more-or-less adopted by the Romans was that a slave could find sanctuary at an altar. It could even be in the home of a private family and the head of that household would give protection to the slave while trying to convince them to return to their master. If the slave refused, often times, the slave would be auctioned off and the funds received given to the slaves old master. So how fortuitous that through Providence, Onesimus found his way to Paul, who was then in the process of trying to work the issue out with his friend Philemon.

et romans 8_28

As so many other examples in the Bible, the Word of God, we see due to the focus of hindsight, that God ALWAYS works things out for the best! (Romans 8:28). In Onesimus’ case and even for Philemon, the circumstance couldn’t be better as we shall explore as we go along. Just to consider the hand of God in this circumstance, Paul was the one who also led Philemon to Christ and now through such great odds, the Apostle also led his friends slave to Christ! There is no such thing as luck or coincidence in a Christian’s life. A disciple of Jesus Christ does not believe in those things when you recognize and realize that our steps truly ARE ordered of the Lord! (Proverbs 16:9; Psalm 37:23).

In one of my favorite commentary’s I found this in regards to this situation:

One of the hidden delights of the Christian life is to see God working in marvelous, miraculous ways, revealing Himself in converging circumstances that cannot be explained by coincidence or chance.[1]

So now, you can begin to understand the Apostle’s train of thought in the first few opening verses. Both Philemon AND Onesimus were converted to Christ through the Apostle’s service! They were now not just master and slave, which still held true in the secular or natural sense, but now they were blood-bought brothers in service to Christ Jesus! I am tickled just writing this as I glance at the verses! What an awesome God we truly serve!

One of the things that I love to do in most of my studies is to take a look at the original words used. Now mind you, I do not spend a lot of time looking up the Hebrew and the Greek for the simple truth is, I’m just not a scholar. I’m more of a student and I do love to learn new things; so when I see a reference to a word or a word or phrase used that intrigues me, I’m like the guy who gets a bit distracted and follows the proverbial rabbit!

Onesimus’ name was one such instance. There’s a lot that can be inferred from someone’s name. I guess it goes back to my own childhood and what I learned about my own name. In this case however, the name Onesimus was at the time of the Apostle Paul a fairly common name for slaves. It’s really not clear if that is the name many were given at birth or if it was more of a “nickname” due to the situation of their lives.

et in a name

It’s actually a phenomenon that is pretty common. Even today, many names are derived from occupations or skills though they weren’t necessarily given because of perspective career hopes in parent’s children. However, there actually is a greater than coincidence of people whose names are common in the types of work they do and there are actually grammatical terms used by linguists (those who study words and their origins) to describe that.

For instance, a “euonym,” from the Greek eu meaning ‘good’ and onym ‘name’, literally means a good name. It’s more commonly defined as a name well suited to the person, place or thing named. But furthermore there is also a term named an “aptronym,” which is a name that is aptly suited to its owner, or an “aptonym,” a proper name that aptly describes the occupation or character of the person, especially by coincidence. So it is evident that it is far from a new thing that a person’s name fits his or her position in life. All I can say is, interesting!

However, there was a point in this little language lesson and evidently the very educated, such as Paul was, back in his time, were very familiar with the meanings of people’s names.

The name Onesimus means “useful” or “profitable”; the Greek word for “useful,” euchrēstos, sounds like the Greek word for “Christ,” christos; and the Greek word for “useless,” achrēstos, sounds like the Greek word achristos, meaning “without Christ.” These wordplays advance Paul’s appeal: Since Onesimus is now part of God’s people, Philemon should treat him primarily as his brother in Christ, not just as his slave.[2]

Now I want you to think about this overall situation for a moment. This is what makes studying the Word of God so enjoyable to me and it should to you as well. The supposed “profitable or useful” Onesimus was probably in Philemon’s mind, nothing but a useless scoundrel! Paul probably realized that to a slave owner, it would only be natural for someone to think that, so in his brilliance and his wisdom, the dear Apostle was making a play on Onesimus’ name that would probably get Philemon’s mind on another track! Again, so very evident that the Holy Spirit was at work, not just in the writing of the letter, but what would play out in Philemon’s mind!

et onesimus

Paul reminds his friend that yes, the “useful” one was not very useful or profitable at all, but now because of his conversion to Christ and all the spiritual changes that accompany that conversion, Onesimus would now live up to his name. Paul expands his thoughts by the statement that “now he’s profitable to you and to me.” Paul is letting Philemon know that it isn’t just Philemon that Onesimus is now useful to, but is also useful to Paul. In other words, he was a much better slave AND person, who was returning than the one who had run away to escape.

This is usually the case even today when considering employer and employee relationships. A Christian worker is more likely to be a much better employee than one who doesn’t have any scruples or disciplines in his life. There are those teachers and commentators who surmise that in the early New Testament times, Christian slaves garnered a higher price for their services than others. It should stand therefore that the same thing holds true today in the work market that a Christian employee should be much more valuable than unbelieving employees.

But here is the intriguing thing; Paul is telling Philemon that in the future, Onesimus would be much more profitable or useful to him, but right now he is useful to Paul. The Apostle adds Onesimus’ usefulness to his own self as well. In essence, Philemon’s friend is telling him that yes, he will be worthwhile to you when he comes back, but he’s already worthwhile to me now and could be in the future.

So what is the Apostle getting at? One thing, he’s already making a commendation concerning Onesimus’ character which in turn should soften the blow upon Onesimus’ return to the household of Philemon. A commendation from the Apostle, though he has made it clear he is writing as a friend and a brother and not an authority figure, would most likely still carry a lot of weight in Philemon’s mind.

So, “useful” was not so useful at first but is now going to be more than useful in the future all because of Christ and the working of the Holy Spirit. I love the wordplay, but more than that, in those simple few words the Apostle is laying out an awesome spiritual fact concerning the changes that take place in the lives of those who accept Christ Jesus as Lord!

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. – 2 Corinthians 5:17.

et new creation

The Five Fingers of Prayer

*Pastor’s Note: This is one of those whimsy little articles that I have had “archived” for a long time. Well, this week, prayer has been exceptionally heavy on my heart and that caused me to remember I had this tucked away. As with so many of these types of things that I have stored away, they come from email circulations and articles that went around some of the early style groups.

  1. Your thumb is nearest to you. So begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you. They are the easiest to remember. To pray for our loved ones is, as C.S. Lewis once said, a “sweet duty.”
  1. The next finger is the pointing finger. Pray for those who teach, instruct and heal; this includes teachers, doctors, and ministers. They need support and wisdom in pointing others in the right direction. Keep them in your prayers.
  1. The next finger is the tallest finger. It reminds us of our leaders. Pray for the president, leaders in business and industry, and administrators. These people shape our nation and guide public opinion. They need God’s guidance.
  1. The fourth finger is our ring finger. Surprising to many is the fact that this is our weakest finger; as any piano teacher will testify. It should remind us to pray for those who are weak, in trouble or in pain. They need your prayers day and night. You cannot pray too much for them.
  1. And lastly comes our little finger; the smallest finger of all. Which is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others. As the Bible says, “For he who is least among you all will be great.” – Luke 9:48. Your pinkie should remind you to pray for yourself. By the time you have prayed for the other four groups, your own needs will be put into proper perspective and you will be able to pray for yourself more effectively.

A Faithful Prayer

*Pastor’s Note: When you’ve been involved in online ministry for as long as I have, it’s easy to make friends and acquaintances along the way. Sister Nancy Burr was one of them. Soon after I got started online and I learned how to create websites, I ran across her beautiful poetry. She was one of the very first Christian poets to let me use her poetry. I miss her as she’s at home with the Lord now, but I still have some of her poetry. The following is one of those poems I love. It’s simple, yet to the point. For me, her poems always hit the inspirational mark. I hope and pray you will enjoy it also.

A FAITHFUL PRAYER

Sometimes as I go through life,
Problems come my way.
It makes me feel so far from You,
I am lost and gone astray.

praying hands bullet

Then I find You in a prayer,
You tell me that You love me.
I find you in a faithful prayer,
You say You will not leave me.

praying hands bullet

You find me in my hiding place,
I can’t escape Your love.
You give me all I’ll ever need,
A gift from up above.

praying hands bullet

I know I don’t deserve You,
Your mercy or Your grace.
But still You’re always there for me,
You shine upon my face.

Daily Prayer & Praise 5/26/2022

Prayer for Thursday 5-26-2022

Dear Father in Heaven, we thank You for wanting to give us happiness and for holding our earthly life firmly in Your hands. May we have the confidence and the faith that we are in Your hands. Grant us the light of faith. Let this light of faith guide us in all things and help us to wait in patience until the doors open for us to pass through according to Your pleasure and perfect will. So bless us all. Bless our life. May we grow joyful and free of heart through all that Jesus Christ gives. On the foundation He establishes for us may Your divine working, Your fatherly love, lift and support us throughout our lives, for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ and for Your glory, we ask these things.

Amen.

Too Hard For God? – A.W. Tozer

thought of day header

For Thursday May 26, 2022:

TOO HARD FOR GOD?

Jeremiah 32:27 (NKJV)
“Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for Me?”

What does it mean to us, that God Almighty has all the power there is? It means that since God has the ability always to do anything He wills to do, then nothing is harder or easier with God. “Hard” and “easy” can’t apply to God because God has all the power there is. Hard or easy applies to me. . . .

God, who has all the power there is, can make a sun and a star and a galaxy as easily as He can lift a robin off a nest. God can do anything as easily as He can do anything else.

This truth applies specifically to the area of our unbelief. We hesitate to ask God to do “hard” things because we figure that God can’t do them. But if they are “easy” things, we ask God to do them. If we have a headache we say, “Oh God, heal my headache.” But if we have a heart condition, we don’t ask the Lord about that, because that’s “too hard” for the Lord! What a shame! Nothing is hard for God—nothing whatsoever. Nothing! In all God’s wisdom and power He is able to do anything as easily as He is able to do anything else.
