Men of Prayer – The Transfiguration

anecdotal stories

Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. – Matthew 17:1-3.

Jesus took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray. Every one of the six men who met on that mountain was eminently a man of prayer. And it was while Christ was praying that His face and His garments were changed, and became shining as the sun and white as the light. Then there appeared and talked with Him two men, Moses and Elijah. Many of us have seen people whose very countenances have been changed after a season of prayer, and their whole lives have seemed to be transformed. I believe that is how Moses got his shining face when he had been in communion with God for forty days. We cannot be in real communion with God without getting more or less of that same glory. When Andrew Bonar was in America, after Major Whittle had been speaking once on the shining face of Stephen, Dr. Bonar said:

“Did you ever notice that when the Jews accused Stephen of blasphemy against Moses’ law, God lit up Stephen’s face with the same glory that He had given to the face of Moses?”

When men are brought into communion with God, He will cause their faces to shine.

His Strong Hand

thought of day header

For Sunday June 5, 2022:

HIS STRONG HAND

John 10:28 (NKJV)
[Jesus said,] “And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish;
neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.”

The scene is usually a cliff, a waterfall, a window ledge, or some other precipice, a fall from which would result in certain death. One person is hanging over the precipice, kept from falling only by holding on to the outstretched hand of another. Three things can happen to the one hanging over the edge: (1) the grip is unintentionally broken because of a failure in strength, (2) the grip is released intentionally because of malevolence, or (3) the person is pulled to safety through the strength of a rescuer.

One of the strongest images of the believer’s eternal security in Christ was painted by the Savior’s own words: “Neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.” Too often, Christians feel that eternal security depends on their own strength, their own faithfulness, their own perseverance—their ability to hold on to the Savior’s hand. The opposite is actually the truth: it is Christ’s strength, Christ’s faithfulness, Christ’s perseverance—Christ’s ability to hold on to the believer’s hand—that keeps the Christian eternally secure.

When you wonder if you have been faithful enough, hold out your hand—and picture it enveloped in the strong hand of Christ.

Once a man is united to God, how could he not live forever?

Jesus Is Coming Again!

prophetic words header wp

Pastor’s Note: I have been doing a lot of studying lately on the end times and not just the Book of Revelation as there are so many that confirm the book that the Apostle John gave us. With all the “prophets” coming out of the woodwork, so to speak and trying to predict what tomorrow will bring, the Bible is full of warnings AND comfort on what the Christian can and should expect. There are a lot of warnings to the unbelievers, but there is immense comfort to the child of God.

I very seldom listen to those that are “prophesying” today, but I will listen to those teaching what God has already recorded, for that, the Scriptures, the Word of God is the ultimate, the final, and the trustworthy words we can live by.

The following article I am posting is not mine, rather like the one I posted several weeks ago, it is only one of them that I have been reading and studying. Like the Apostle Paul told the Thessalonians, we SHOULD be comforting one another with the Scriptural prophecies that have been given us in God’s written word. Don’t be deceived by the sensational that you see going around us for the sensational will soon be the routine of the day used to deceive many. Rather, trust in the eternal word!

1 Thessalonians 5:16-21, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.” KNJV (Bold emphasis, added).

JESUS IS COMING AGAIN

This same Jesus, who came nineteen hundred years ago, is coming back again, for He is now in heaven and waiting to return. No one who takes his Bible seriously can doubt the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. His Second Coming is mentioned two hundred and forty times in the New Testament alone, more times by far than any other doctrine in the entire Bible. There is no more certain truth in the entire Scriptures than the personal, literal, imminent return of the Lord Jesus Christ to this earth.

AN UNDATED EVENT

The exact day of this great event, however, has not been revealed. We know not when He will come as far as the day and the hour are concerned. All attempts to fix dates, therefore, are absolutely un-scriptural and can only bring reproach upon the cause of Christ. All the date-setters of the past have proved to be false prophets. Jesus Himself said in Matthew 24:36, “But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.” We, therefore, reject every attempt of men to fix the date of our Lord’s return.

THE TIMES AND THE SEASONS

When we say that we cannot know the day or the hour, it does not mean that we cannot know the “times and the seasons.” We are told definitely that we may know when it is near and the general time when He will come back again. One thing we do know, we are nearer the coming of Christ today than we have ever been before in all of history. Each day brings us one day closer to this certain event. The Bible abounds with signs which will reveal to the spiritual Christian the nearness of His Second Coming. To ignore these signs is to make ourselves partakers of the sin of the hypocrites of Jesus’ day who were rebuked and castigated for not knowing the signs of His First Coming.

Jesus Himself gave us scores of signs and indications which He said would precede His coming again by which we might know that His coming is imminent. Again and again, in speaking of these signs, He assures us, “When ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors” (Matthew 24:33).

There are, then, two dangers. First, the danger of date setting, and, second, the opposite evil, just as serious, of ignoring the signs of the times which tell us when Jesus is about to come again. The believer need not be ignorant concerning the time of our Lord’s return. Some time ago I heard a preacher speaking on the Second Coming who said, “No one can know when Jesus is coming again, for He will come as a thief in the night. The thief does not announce his coming or give any indication of when he may be expected.” This brother then quoted 1 Thessalonians 5, verses 2 and 3:

For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

There he stopped. Why stop there? Why not read verse 4 of 1 Thessalonians 5 and the verses which follow as well? Jesus comes as a thief for the unsaved, to be sure, but certainly this passage was not spoken concerning the believer. Here is the passage which follows:

But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober (1 Thessalonians 5:4–6).

Notice carefully, the coming of the Lord will not come as a thief for the believer at all. That applies only to the unsaved. For this reason, the true Christian studies the signs of the times as given in the Scriptures that he may know when Jesus’ coming is near. To fail to acquaint ourselves with the signs of His return will merit the rebuke of the Lord Jesus Himself who said, “O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?” (Matthew 16:3).[1]

A Touch of His Hem

*Pastor’s Note: Here’s another poem from one of my favorite Christian poets. I love the flow of rhyme from the poetry of Sister Deborah Ann Belka and I love the inspiration and encouragement behind them. She has a true spiritual gift and she uses it to bless us all. This is recently revised from her website, CHRISTian Poetry – By Deborah Ann. Please visit her site and be blessed, and remember to pray for her ministry (service) as part of the Body of Christ.

a touch of his hem - dab

When I saw Him from a distance,
I ran and followed after Him
for, I believed all I needed . . .
was just a touch of His hem.

For years I’ve been scorned,
shunned by those around me
so I hid myself in the crowd
hoping my shame He wouldn’t see.

As He passed by I reached down,
and took from Him my cure . . .
for, I believed this man named Jesus
would heal me if my faith was pure.

He called me His daughter,
when my trust in Him I revealed
and from that very moment
from my disease I was healed.

He bid to me to go in good comfort,
saying my faith had made me whole
for, I believe as I touched His hem . . .
He imparted favor right into my soul.

There is a lesson to my story,
don’t be ashamed of your illness or sin
for Jesus still heals today . . .
if you let Him touch you from within!

~~~~~~~~
Matthew 9:20-22
“And, behold, a woman,
which was diseased with an issue
of blood twelve years,
came behind him, and touched
the hem of his garment:
For she said within herself,
If I may but touch his garment,
I shall be whole.
But Jesus turned him about,
and when he saw her, he said,
Daughter, be of good comfort;
thy faith hath made thee whole.
And the woman was made whole
from that hour.“
Daily Prayer & Praise 6/03/2022
Prayer for Friday 6-3-2022
Dear Father in Heaven, we thank You for all Your goodness and for the peace You give us. Unite us as Your people, we pray. Unite us as one people with all Your children who have ever lived, as one people with all who want to serve You. The more faithfully and joyfully we are Your people, the more blessing You can give. Let the material world come under Your hand. Guide Your children on earth. Lead us in such a way that others may be helped. When we suffer, grant us strength and understanding of Your will. Protect us today and every day, in the name of Your Son, Christ Jesus.
Amen.
Luke 12:20 – Ole Hallesby
thought of day header
For Friday June 3, 2022:
LUKE 12:20
Luke 12:20 (NKJV)
Fool! This night your soul will be required of you.
As a little boy I thought there was something unmerciful about this story. Was not the man a good farmer? Did he not farm so well that his buildings were too small to take care of the crops?
Since that time I have begun to see how merciful Jesus is, also in this parable. It was not what the man did that brought him misfortune. It was what he did not do. The closing words of Jesus make this clear: “So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
Every human being has the urge to possess something, therefore also the desire to acquire property. Many seek to attain this without work, by deceit, fraud, or force. But most people seek to acquire property by honest effort.
And such honest and capable effort is a vital factor in all human life, in the life of the individual, the home, and society at large. Let us thank God for all the diligent, capable, and conscientious effort that is put forth in our country, both by men and by women, both at home and away from home.
God’s benediction and blessing is upon this work. God knows, however, that most people look at the wealth they are seeking to acquire for themselves in a wrong light. They are so occupied with laying up earthly treasures that they forget the heavenly.
It is this about which Jesus would speak with us today. He would tell us how poor that person is who is not rich toward God.
In this parable Jesus would illustrate this poverty by showing us that death takes all that we possess if we have naught but earthly treasures.
Are you rich toward God? Have you become poor in spirit, so that Christ has been able to make you the possessor of the whole kingdom of God?
Reflecting With God 6/03/2022
reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.
All Scriptures Used are NKJV, New King James Version
For Friday June 3, 2022:
And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. – Genesis 3:8.
We also, when like to be obtruded on by the presence of God to our conscience or our thoughts, do, by a movement almost instinctive, flee to hide ourselves. We too have our gardens of vain security, our places of sweet and soothing forgetfulness, which serve, to ourselves at least, the temporary purpose of a hiding-place from God. If they do not hinder Him from seeing us, they at least hinder us from seeing Him; and this does in the meantime, for a respite from all those troublesome awakenings, which might else have haunted our spirits, and rifled away from them the rest and the enjoyments which we are so fain to prolong.
~ CHALMERS
Sensational!
Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon. And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast. – Revelation 13:11-14. (Bold Emphasis Mine).
Miracles, signs and wonders! What an age we live in! Mankind has always been enthralled by spectacular sights and sounds and those things which catch the senses a little off-guard. Today especially we live in a time when the sensational is almost addictive, to say the least.
Whether it’s in our sports, no matter the sport; the more exciting the better, and especially when we are witnesses to feats of prowess and spectacle. All a person today has to do is a little research to see just how much the economy is affected by major sports like football, basketball, hockey, boxing, auto racing and even the Olympics. Watch any televised event and you’re sure to see stadiums completely full of spectators that paid top dollar for the opportunity to witness the event.
If you are able to ask any of them or possibly take a survey, see how many are there hoping to see something out of the ordinary, something beyond spectacular. The number of people who admit that is pretty high, I would imagine.
Another arena of course is the entertainment industry. Especially today with the state of the art technology applied in special effects, you can make just about anything seem not just real and alive onscreen, but beyond amazing when compared to the real world. Explosions are bigger, more dramatic, flights of fantasy take you to places most minds can’t imagine, action greater and more heroic than anything the average person ever sees in their lifetime. No wonder theaters and especially studios are always competing for the next biggest and greatest box-office event. It’s literally a race to see who will garner the next largest payday and we the public are the ones spurring the studios on.
pd sensationalism
The spectacular and sensational has so captivated our societies that if we can’t have it on the big screen, in the big arena, then we will purchase the biggest television set with the greatest sound system so that we can experience in our homes anytime we want. The greater the sensation and the more of it, the better.
It truly reminds me of someone who is addicted to something. Those addicted to alcohol or drugs find that after the initial few times of feeling “sensational” it takes more of the product to get the same results and then more and more after that. So it seems with our lives in general. Each event, has to outdo the last one or we lose interest quickly, so we push the promoters to give us something more, something greater. Like drugs or alcohol, our bodies, our minds, our SENSES become acclimated to each succeeding dose to the degree that we just have to have more.
I’m sure giving in to the senses has been our weakness leading to our spiritual downfall ever since the very beginning. After all, if it wasn’t for the fact that the forbidden fruit “was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise,” I’m sure that Eve wouldn’t have tried it and then given it to Adam to try, no matter what that old serpent said (Genesis 3:6). Yep, I truly believe that we are always searching for that next great sensation.
Of course, it didn’t stop there. All through the Bible and the history of mankind and especially concerning the ancient Israelites, we see the evidence of their natures being carried away by the newest and most forbidden sensation. They were constantly looking to false gods, idols made of stone, wood and metals for their next great “fix” even though they had all the miracles enacted right before their eyes for so very long.
Which leads me to a type and shadow of what is to come in the future. We saw it in Pharoah’s court during the time that God called Moses to lead the people of Israel out of Egyptian bondage. That story can of course be found in Exodus chapters 7-8. When Moses and Aaron finally confront the Pharoah, demanding that he free God’s people from slavery, Moses and Aaron performed miracles to confirm that their message was not from themselves, but rather from the God they served. I’m sure Pharoah was a bit impressed that these simple people could do “magic” like that but on three occasions, Pharoah’s magicians appeared to duplicate the same things. So in a way, Pharoah didn’t get “excited” enough to change his mind.
pd moses and pharoah
So you might be asking how the magicians of Pharoah’s court could duplicate the same signs that Moses and Aaron performed? For that I went to Got Questions.com which had a very concise answer that I love.
There are two possible answers to this question. The first is that the magicians received their power from Satan. Although not as powerful as God, Satan, formerly one of God’s highest angels, has the power to deceive, emulate miracles, and even tell the future with a certain degree of accuracy (see Luke 4; 2 Corinthians 4:4; Acts 16:16–18). Satan may have given Pharaoh’s magicians the power to duplicate some of the signs God performed through Moses and Aaron.
The second option, and the more probable, is that the magicians simply created illusions. Through sleight-of-hand and conjurer’s tricks, they deceived their audience into believing that they were performing the same miracles as Moses and Aaron. The first illusion, that of turning the staffs into snakes, may have been performed by snake charming, which was widely practiced in ancient Egypt (and even some today). There was a way in which snake charmers could cause a snake to stiffen like a staff and relax on command. Since the magicians were summoned after Aaron threw down his own staff, they would have had time to prepare the trick in advance. As for turning the Nile to blood, only dye is needed to make water run red. The frogs may be a more complicated illusion, but, just as modern illusionists can pull rabbits out of hats, Pharaoh’s magicians could have summoned frogs.
Whether they were creating illusions or performing actual miracles, the Egyptian magicians were eventually stymied by God’s power. They were unable to summon gnats (Exodus 8:16–19), turn the sky dark (Exodus 10:21–23), call down hailstones (Exodus 9:22–26), or duplicate any of the other plagues. God’s power is great enough to defeat both man’s conniving and Satan’s power with ease.[1]
pd 2 timothy 3_4-5
Now Paul wrote to Timothy, his protégé concerning situations and circumstances like this.
But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith; but they will progress no further, for their folly will be manifest to all, as theirs also was. – 2 Timothy 3:1-9 (Bold Emphasis Mine).
Pharaoh’s magicians were ultimately exposed as failures when they opposed the truth. But, you might be asking what does this have to do with anything? It’s a fair question. Pharoah wasn’t impressed in the least, at first. It was only after the miracles and signs became greater and more fantastic that he finally believed, but even then, he hardened his heart and he reneged on his agreement with Moses and Aaron and then took out after them to his own destruction.
There’s coming a time most likely in the very near future if the things we see around us in the world are any indication in which the same or nearly the same situation as what Pharoah went through will affect this world. The sad truth of the matter is that the world in it’s present state is ripe for deception! The world is looking for something sensational. The church isn’t giving it to them and so just like the religious leaders of Jesus’ day, the world is telling the true church, show us a sign from Heaven if what you say is true. We can only give them the very same answer that Jesus did because they are not wanting to depend on FAITH which it takes to enter into Christ Jesus’ Redemption.
Jesus told the religious leaders back then and I believe the Holy Spirit is telling the world and the religious who are in love with the things of the world the very same thing for the very same reason:
But He sighed deeply in His spirit, and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Assuredly, I say to you, no sign shall be given to this generation.” – Mark 8:12.
But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given . . .” – Matthew 12:39; Luke 11:29.
pd looking for signs
Jesus had already demonstrated countless miracles yet the religious crowds wanted something more sensational, something coming from Heaven to prove His claims. The sad truth is, they wouldn’t have accepted Him even then, just as Pharoah rejected the truth. The religious leaders of Jesus’ day could also cast out demons and such evidently, so to them Jesus’ miracles weren’t sensational enough and yet when He healed the blind and cured leprosy, their only concern was Him doing it on the Sabbath! God was manifesting Himself in front of them and they were too blind to see.
We have someone right now most likely in the shadows, just around the corner, waiting for his opportunity to deceive and his deception will be great and supremely sensational!
The False Prophet will have the power to perform great miracles. Imagine the astonishment of all on earth as great streaks of fire blaze across the sky.
The False Prophet will counterfeit God’s miracles by calling down fire from heaven (Revelation 13:13). In the Old Testament, calling down fire from heaven was often used to execute God’s judgment. Fire and brimstone fell on Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 19:24. In Leviticus 10:1-2, fire consumed Aaron’s sons when they violated God’s commands. Elijah triumphed over the prophets of Baal when the fire of the Lord fell from heaven and consumed his sacrifice (1 Kings 18:38).  And during the Tribulation, fire will proceed from the mouths of God’s witnesses (Revelation 11:3-6). Whatever God does, Satan is the master counterfeiter.[2]
To a large extent, the Christian Church of today has increasingly placed emphasis on things like worldly prosperity, political activism, media attention, and emotional religious experiences. Meanwhile, emphasis on solid Biblical doctrine has been steadily declining. This has created an environment ripe for deception, and the prophecies indicate that the deception will be successful:
The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie. – 2 Thessalonians 2:9-11.
But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. – 2 Timothy 3:13.
pd deceiving and deceived
My point and my concern is this; I truly believe God is still performing miracles EVERYDAY through His Holy Spirit and it just takes our eyes to be opened and our ears to hear them. They aren’t all sensational in the sense of being “in your face” so to speak. You have to have a heart for the Lord to recognize and realize them and many of them are also spiritual, but they are all around us.
We have God’s Word to instill faith within us, to encourage us, to enable us no matter the circumstances that surround us, but if we are a people that is always going to be looking for and trying to identify the next great sensational sign from Heaven, then we are no different, none whatsoever than that wicked and perverse generation that Jesus came to reach.
Jesus Christ is Lord of Lords and King of Kings and He has risen already and is living and ready to come back. His Word says that, it is His promise and that of the Father’s to His children. The only sign I am truly looking for is the sound of the trumpet and a mighty shout of Jesus calling His children to meet Him in the air. It could happen at any moment. There are no signs preceding the event. We are told to be ready and watching and the Apostle Paul goes so far as to say, Therefore comfort one another with these words. – 1 Thessalonians 4:18.
Don’t be deceived, as Christians, disciples of Jesus, test the spirits to see if they are of God. The Lord freely gives His children discernment. So, I’m comforting you with these words, and as James writes in his Epistle, Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. – James 5:7-8.
God Bless!
What Are You Haunted By? – Oswald Chambers
thought of day header
For Thursday June 2, 2022:
WHAT ARE YOU HAUNTED BY?
Psalm 25:12 (NKJV)
Who is the man that fears the LORD?
What are you haunted by? You will say—‘By nothing,’ but we are all haunted by something, generally by ourselves, or, if we are Christians, by our experience. The Psalmist says we are to be haunted by God. The abiding consciousness of the life is to be God, not thinking about Him. The whole of our life inside and out is to be absolutely haunted by the presence of God. A child’s consciousness is so mother-haunted that although the child is not consciously thinking of its mother, yet when calamity arises, the relationship that abides is that of the mother. So we are to live and move and have our being in God, to look at everything in relation to God, because the abiding consciousness of God pushes itself to the front all the time.
If we are haunted by God, nothing else can get in, no cares, no tribulation, no anxieties. We see now why Our Lord so emphasized the sin of worry. How can we dare be so utterly unbelieving when God is round about us? To be haunted by God is to have an effective barricade against all the onslaughts of the enemy.
“His soul shall dwell at ease.” In tribulation, misunderstanding, slander, in the midst of all these things, if our life is hid with Christ in God, He will keep us at ease. We rob ourselves of the marvelous revelation of this abiding companionship of God. “God is our Refuge”—nothing can come through that shelter.
Reflecting With God 6/02/2022
reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.
All Scriptures Used are NKJV, New King James Version
For Thursday June 2, 2022:
Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four riverheads. – Genesis 2:10.
And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. – Revelation 22:1.
The Bible is a circle, in describing which the Divine hand begins in Paradise and ends there. In Genesis God dwells with men, and He does so in Revelation. In Genesis man is in Eden, with the river that watered the garden, and the trees yielding their pleasant fruits, and in Revelation man is in the garden of God once more, with this advantage, that no serpent is there to beguile, and no forbidden fruit to allure.
Daily Prayer & Praise 6/01/2022
Prayer for Wednesday 6-1-2022
Dear Father in Heaven, in Your Word we trust, in Your Word of eternal life, given us in Jesus Christ our Savior. We build on this Word of life in these days when it seems that everything is losing strength and value, and yet there is so much longing in people’s hearts. You will not let our hope be disappointed. What You have spoken must be fulfilled. What is promised in Jesus Christ must come into being, not only for a few but for the whole world, for which He died and was raised from the dead. Be with us. Keep us so fully alive that our lives reflect all the goodness we are allowed to experience and we overcome all the evil which tries to attack us. We thank You for calling us to life and for renewing us again and again. May Your name be praised among us forever. We sincerely come before You, in Jesus’ precious name.
Amen.
Romans 8:4 – A.B. Simpson
thought of day header
For Wednesday June 1, 2022:
ROMANS 8:4
Romans 8:4 (NKJV)
That the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us.
Beloved friends, do you know the mistake some of you are making? Some of you say: “It is not possible for me to be good: no man ever was perfect, and it is no use for me to try.” That is the mistake many of you are making. I agree with the first sentence, “No man ever was perfect”; but I don’t agree with the second, “There is no use trying.” There is a divine righteousness that we may have. I don’t mean merely that which pardons your sins—I believe that, too—but I mean far more; I mean that which comes into your soul and unites itself with the fibers of your being; I mean Christ; your life, your purity, making you feel as Christ feels; think as Christ thinks, love as Christ loves, hate as Christ hates, and be “partakers of the divine nature.” That is God’s righteousness; “that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us,” not by us, but in us; not our hands and feet merely, but our very instincts, our very desires, our very nature springing up in harmony with His own. Have you got Him, dear friends? He will come and fulfil all right things in you if to-day you will open your heart.
For Wednesday June 1, 2022:
The LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. And out of the ground the LORD God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. – Genesis 2:8-9
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned. – Romans 5:12.
The doctrine of environment had its deathblow in the garden of Eden.
Philemon Verses 12-13
Philemon 1:12-13, I am sending him back. You therefore receive him, that is, my own heart, whom I wished to keep with me, that on your behalf he might minister to me in my chains for the gospel.
If you remember in the preceding verses, Paul makes a play with Onesimus’ name in writing to Philemon, almost as a way to break the ice. Now that Paul has planted the thought that Onesimus is now actually descriptive of his name, that being useful to both Paul and Philemon, Paul continues on with his commendation of Onesimus.
One thing you need to notice in this letter; though it deals with a circumstance of slavery, Paul is neither condoning or condemning the nature of slavery. It was the law of that time and not always harmonious to say the least. Some slave owners could be very cruel and unforgiving. What is so very interesting in this circumstance though is the way the values of Christ Jesus and what He taught AND exemplified, come through in this situation. You will see this so much clearer as we go along.
Paul sends Onesimus back to Philemon, most likely with the very letter he is writing and he does this for at least a couple of reasons. First, it is the law. Even though the Romans honored a sanctuary law as discussed earlier, there were still severe penalties for the person harboring a fugitive slave and especially if they were aware of it. The penalties could actually be just as severe for the person harboring the fugitive slave as the penalty to the slave himself. In this instance, even though the Apostle is already in chains, he is abiding by the law of the land. I do not believe for the slightest moment that fear of consequences motivated the Apostle to send Onesimus back, but rather a motive of love for his brother (and son in the Lord, Philemon). Onesimus is the rightful slave of Philemon and as such Paul should do all to make it right. Obeying the laws of the land is one of the things that Paul has written about in his letters, so he is following his own considerations.
Secondly, Paul truly loved Philemon as well as Onesimus and he wasn’t just demonstrating Christ-like values, but also manifesting his love for Philemon and I’m sure, teaching righteousness to Onesimus. It might not seem like love at first, at least from Onesimus’ perspective, but with the teaching that he is now a brother in the Lord, right alongside of Philemon, the opportunity to experience true Christ-like love would be a big stepping stone in walking the Christian lifestyle.
et love like jesus
The thing is, that even though accepting Christ Jesus as his Savior, Onesimus’ sins were forgiven and he was thus justified in Christ, but there are still consequences to our actions in the natural world. Paul was however preparing the way to hopefully make those consequences less harsh since Onesimus was now a child of the Lord as was Philemon. The other thing is that we don’t know how long Philemon had been walking in Christ at this time, but it was a great opportunity to be able to demonstrate the stance of a mature Christian in his relationship with Onesimus who was most certainly a young or fairly new convert.
Paul lets Philemon know that he is not just sending his slave back to him, but to Paul what has become an emotional and loving part of his own heart. It is evident also that Paul is not just referring to Onesimus in regards to considering him to be a son in the Lord, but there has become a stronger bond between them. He is imploring Philemon to receive him, accept him back into his household as if it were Paul himself. That’s a pretty strong plea from not just someone you consider a friend, but a highly respected mentor as well! However knowing that Onesimus was his master’s property, Paul had no choice but to send Onesimus back.
More or less, the Apostle is telling his friend in essence, “Philemon, I know this man has done you wrong and deserves to be punished. But consider him as my own heart and be merciful to him.”
Then the Apostle continues on with a somewhat startling statement, he goes on to say, “whom I wished to keep with me, that on your behalf he might minister to me in my chains for the gospel.”
I love the way the New Living Testament clarifies this same verse so precisely; “I wanted to keep him here with me while I am in these chains for preaching the Good News, and he would have helped me on your behalf.” (NLT).
In the Greek text of The Letter to Philemon, the Apostle’s statement is worded as if Philemon had actually sent Onesimus to assist in Paul’s circumstance. Paul again, is very wise in his wording to lend his writing to have the most impact. As one commentator put it, Paul was very skillful in the art of friendly persuasion! Of course, we cannot forget, and at times it is easy to do so, but the Holy Spirit was instrumental in this situation and most definitely the inspiration behind Paul’s writing!
et paul in chainsSometimes when we consider the everyday lifestyle that the disciples went through, it is easy to believe that it was all their own thoughts. True it was what was on their hearts, but they were most definitely vessels of the Holy Spirit and we can take assurance AND a lesson in that fact, for the Holy Spirit is STILL alive and at work in His students today!
The Apostle’s preference was to keep Onesimus with him and I’m sure that since Paul WAS in literal chains, there was a lot that Onesimus was able to do in service to Paul. This would definitely motivate the Apostle to mention the reason he was in chains which was for the work of the Gospel, which also was dear to the heart of Philemon. So Paul wasn’t just concocting a reason for Onesimus’ usefulness for in fact he had proven to be very useful to Paul in his circumstance. This is most likely the motive behind Paul also stating that Onesimus was serving Paul on behalf of Philemon. In that statement he was acknowledging that Onesimus was Philemon’s slave or servant, but since Philemon couldn’t help Paul, the Apostle was looking at it as if Onesimus was helping him on behalf of his friend, more like Philemon’s assistant, as it were.
In Christianity there is a lot of emphasis put on substitution. It is an underlying theme throughout a lot of Scripture and very definitely in the doctrine of Salvation. It is as if Paul is telling Philemon that Onesimus in a way is a substitute for his inability to minister to Paul, his mentor. It is almost as if Paul is reminding in a very subtle way, Philemon’s indebtedness to Paul for his own conversion, such as you would see from a spiritual son to his father in the spirit.
This also probably carried a lot of weight when Philemon would read the letter. Remember, Onesimus was delivering it to Philemon personally so the impact and/or response would probably be fairly immediate.
God Almighty is our Spiritual Father and we had a debt that we couldn’t pay for His love and grace towards us. Jesus became our substitution and actually still is in that regard until we experience full redemption. We became slaves to sin and Christ Jesus has ministered not just on the Father’s behalf but also to us through His Holy Spirit. One day we are going back to the Father’s house, but in our case, it will no longer be as slaves, but rather as co-heirs in His Kingdom!
That is truly something awesome to think about and contemplate. Come quickly Lord Jesus! Amen and AMEN!
et father's kingdom
Next post we will begin with Philemon verse 14.
Prayer for Tuesday 5-31-2022
Lord our God, we want to find our joy in You and in all Your promises to us. For You have promised that in the midst of all the pain and sorrow, You are preparing what pleases You and serves Your honor in every heart. May we experience in our lives the fulfillment of many of Your promises, so that again and again we can go forward joyfully, rising above difficult times and situations. Have mercy on us and protect us in Your strength. Be glorified in the strength and assurances You give to us so freely. We give You thanks, we give You praise and we do it all in the name of Your Son, our beloved Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ.
Amen.
Elijah’s Appeal to the Undecided – C.H. Spurgeon
thought of day header
For Tuesday May 31, 2022:
ELIJAH’S APPEAL TO THE UNDECIDED
1 Kings 18:21 (NKJV)
“How long will you falter between two opinions?
If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.”
I insist that it is your bounden duty, if you believe in God, simply because he is God, to serve him and obey him. I do not tell you it is for your advantage—it may be, I believe it is—but that I put aside from the question; I demand of you that you follow God, if you believe him to be God. If you do not think he is God; if you really think that the devil is God, then follow him; his pretended godhead shall be your plea, and you shall be consistent; but if God be God, if he made you, I demand that you serve him; if it is he who puts the breath into your nostrils, I demand that you obey him. If God be really worthy of worship, and you really think so, I demand that you either follow him, or else deny that he is God at all. Now, professor, if thou sayest that Christ’s gospel is the only gospel, if thou believes in the divinity of the gospel, and puts thy trust in Christ, I demand of thee to follow out the gospel, not merely because it will be to thy advantage, but because the gospel is divine. If thou makes a profession of being a child of God, if thou art a believer, and thinks and believes religion is the best, the service of God most desirable, I do not come to plead with thee because of any advantage thou wouldst get by being holy; it is on this ground that I put it, that the Lord is God; and if he be God, it is thy business to serve him. If his gospel be true, and thou believes it to be true, it is thy duty to carry it out.
