The Next Best Thing To Do – Oswald Chambers

thought of day header

For Thursday June 9, 2022:

THE NEXT BEST THING TO DO

Luke 11:10 (NKJV)
For everyone who asks receives.
Ask if you have not Received.

There is nothing more difficult than to ask. We will long and desire and crave and suffer, but not until we are at the extreme limit will we ask. A sense of unreality makes us ask. Have you ever asked out of the depths of moral poverty? “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God . . .” but be sure that you do lack wisdom. You cannot bring yourself up against Reality when you like. The next best thing to do if you are not spiritually real, is to ask God for the Holy Spirit on the word of Jesus Christ (see Luke 11:13). The Holy Spirit is the One Who makes real in you all that Jesus did for you.

“For every one that asketh receiveth.” This does not mean you will not get if you do not ask (cf. Matthew 5:45), but until you get to the point of asking you won’t receive from God. To receive means you have come into the relationship of a child of God, and now you perceive with intelligent and moral appreciation and spiritual understanding that these things come from God.

“If any of you lack wisdom . . .” If you realize you are lacking, it is because you have come in contact with spiritual reality; do not put your reasonable blinkers on again. People say—Preach us the simple gospel: don’t tell us we have to be holy, because that produces a sense of abject poverty, and it is not nice to feel abjectly poor. “Ask” means beg. Some people are poor enough to be interested in their poverty, and some of us are like that spiritually. We will never receive if we ask with an end in view; if we ask, not out of our poverty but out of our lust. A pauper does not ask from any other reason than the abject panging condition of his poverty, he is not ashamed to beg. Blessed are the paupers in spirit.

For Thursday June 9, 2022:

Now the LORD had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, From your family And from your father’s house, To a land that I will show you.” – Genesis 12:1.

This same voice has often spoken since. It called Elijah from This be, and Amos from Tekoa; Peter from his fishing nets, and Matthew from his toll-booth; Cromwell from his farm in Huntingdon, and Luther from his cloister at Erfurt. It ever sounds the perpetual summons of God. “Come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing.” Has it not come to you? Strange, if it has not. Yet, if it has, let nothing hinder your obedience; strike your tents, and follow where the God of glory beckons; and in that word “Come,” understand that He is moving on in front, and that if you would have His companionship, you must follow.

Daily Prayer & Praise 6/08/2022

Prayer for Wednesday 6-8-2022

Lord our God, we wait for You night and day. We believe in You and we long for Your righteousness. You will answer our prayer. Bless us, we pray. May Your name be kept holy and Your Kingdom quickly come. O Lord our God, may Your perfect will be accomplished among the nations. May Your will be done in each of us and be plainly seen, as it is in Heaven. Look upon the nations. Watch over all humankind. Let a new path be broken so that a peace that passes all understanding may come into the hearts of all Your children, a peace from You, Lord our God. We humbly ask these things in the name of Your only Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Napoleon’s Russian Campaign

One of the most interesting and significant objects in the world is a simple shaft of granite which stands near the highway at Wilna, on the western boundary of Russia. It bears two inscriptions in the Russian language. On the side that faces westward are these words:

“Napoleon Bonaparte passed this way in 1812 with 410,000 men.”

On the side facing eastward is this:

“Napoleon Bonaparte passed this way in 1812 with 9,000 men.”

At the end of the Battle of Armageddon, however, there will be no survivors among Antichrist’s and the world’s armies.

And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon. – Revelation 16:16

Isaiah 28:28 – A.B. Simpson

thought of day header

For Wednesday June 8, 2022:

ISAIAH 28:28

Isaiah 28:28 (NKJV)
Bread flour must be ground.

The farmer does not gather timothy and blue grass, and break it with a heavy machine. But he takes great pains with the wheat. So God takes great pains with those who are to be of much use to Him. There is a nature in them that needs this discipline. Don’t wonder if the bread corn is treated with the wise, discriminating care that will fit it for food. He knows the way He is taking, and there is infinite tenderness in the oversight He gives. He is watching the furnace you are in lest the heat should be too intense. He wants it great enough to purify, and then it is withdrawn. He knoweth our frame. He will not let any temptation take us but such as is common to man, and He will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that we may be able to bear it. Do you believe in this disciplining love of the Husbandman, and are you trusting Him with the leading and government of your life? Oh, that you would cease to envy or be disturbed by the people around you! Some day you will be glad for the training and blessing they have brought you.

For Wednesday June 8, 2022:

“The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” – Genesis 9:16.

The whole creation rests, as to its exemption from a second deluge, on the eternal stability of God’s covenant, of which the bow is the token; and it is happy to bear in mind, that when the bow appears, the eye of God rests upon it; and man is cast, not upon his own imperfect and most uncertain memory, but upon God’s. “I,” says God, “will remember.” How sweet to think of what God will, and what He will not, remember! He will remember His own covenant, but He will not remember His people’s sins. The cross, which ratifies the former, puts away the latter.

We, Being Many, Are One

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. – Ephesians 4:4-6.

I know that I have been spending a lot of time on this subject, but I just want to give my brothers and sisters in Christ a word of encouragement. There are a lot of different denominations it’s true, but among those that believe in the doctrine of “Christ and Him crucified” for our sakes, the differences we have in other areas truly are minor.

The Apostle Paul tells us in this verse what makes us one. One body; One Spirit; One hope of our calling; One Lord; One Faith; One Baptism; One God and Father. These are what makes us truly one.

We believe in One God, Triune, meaning with three personalities or natures. The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit and each an individual role that they play as God, yet equal in all things. There cannot be GOD without either of these “personalities or natures.”

One Spirit, who actually encompasses ALL of God. God the Father is Spirit (John 4:24), the Holy Spirit of the Father resides in Christ making Him and the Father One in Spirit (John 10:30), and the Holy Spirit was sent from the Father when Christ ascended to be that part of Him that indwells those of us who are truly One in Christ and teaches us all about the Father and the Son (John 15:26).

One Hope of our calling is that hope that all of us have in Christ Jesus and His work on the Cross that “called us” to salvation and gives us assurance for our eternal future. We choose to surrender to Him, but it is He who calls and draws us.

pd walk by faith

One Faith is what all of us understand is what it takes first to receive Christ Jesus and His gift of Salvation but then to be able to please God, the Father. (Hebrews 11:6). It is the faith we need necessary to walk in the new spiritual lifestyle.

One Baptism is the acknowledgement that baptism is the covenant symbol that we have accepted Christ as our Lord and Savior and we have died with Him in spirit as symbolized in the immersion of water, but then the arising out of it. True Christians believe that the symbolism is an answer of a good conscience concerning Salvation in Christ to God the Father. (1 Peter 3:21).

All of these come under what Paul chooses to put at the last of his statement, One God, not various gods, or entities or supreme beings, or ascended masters, but One God and thus One Father, the Creator, above us all, through us all and in us all. God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit because it is the Spirit of God is above us always and forever, through us all as His children and co-heirs with Christ and because He is Spirit, is able to dwell in us all who have surrendered our wills to Him.

Everything that makes us ONE Body is encompassed in God and every aspect of God and Who God is. There is no division in one. You can not divide any of these things that make us one or they will not be. What makes us one in the body of Christ and thus one with each other is what Paul listed here by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit that dwells within each of us and thus confirms the truth of this with Him!

Therefore we CAN love one another despite any denominational differences as long as the differences do not encompass these seven principles that the Apostle stated. Oh, did you notice I said seven principles that make us ONE? If you are a Christian, you already know that the number seven usually stands for the number of completion. A completed work. I wonder if Paul thought of that, or if that was just one of the Holy Spirit’s inspirations that He dropped into Paul’s thoughts when he wrote this?

Some of you may wonder why I get along with so many of my brothers and sisters who belong to such varied denominations and such diverse teachings on certain things. Here it is. I believe in certain things not in this list, but it is this list that causes me to call others, my brother and sisters and I take that designation very seriously for I believe it makes us an eternal family based on the bloodline of Jesus Christ and no other.

pd Colossians 3_15

So, in conclusion, go ahead and disagree with me on some aspects of teaching, but you still have to love me (as my wife’s aunt used to always say), and I may disagree with you on certain things, but not to the point where I won’t love you for real and not to the point where I still won’t call you, brother or sister! We ARE, truly ARE ONE in Christ Jesus! Glory to God!

The time of the Lord’s returning is getting closer everyday there is no doubt. I will do all in my power to encourage my brothers and my sisters to love one another and to keep looking up! The Bridegroom IS coming!!

Daily Prayer & Praise 6/07/2022

Prayer for Tuesday 6-7-2022

Lord our God, our refuge forever, bless us who have gathered in Your presence and who turn to You in all distress, not only in our personal need but also in the distress of the nations and peoples of the whole world. Grant that we may be Your children fully, with a simple faith that gives us strength to go on working even when life is bitterly hard. We thank You for giving us so much grace, for helping us and never forsaking us, so that again and again we can find joy and can glorify and praise You, our Father. May Your name be praised from Heaven above and among us here below. May Your name be praised by all people throughout the world, and may everyone on earth acknowledge You and receive all that they need from You. May we be the vessels to glorify Your name to all peoples. In the name of Christ Jesus our Lord we pray.

Amen.

Man’s Best Friend

While practicing law, George G. Vest, a former U. S. Senator from Missouri, defended a farmer whose dog was involved in a minor damage suit. Here is part of his speech:

“The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog. . . . When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.”

“If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies.”

“And, when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in his embrace, and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by the graveside will be found the noble dog, his head between his paws, his sad eyes alert and watchful, still faithful and true even in death.”

With this impassioned plea, Vest won a favorable verdict from the jury.

“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” – John 15:13

Presumptuous Sins – C.H. Spurgeon

thought of day header

For Tuesday June 7, 2022:

PRESUMPTUOUS SINS

Psalm 19:13 (NKJV)
Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins.

This prayer was the prayer of a saint, the prayer of a holy man of God. Did David need to pray thus? Did the “man after God’s own heart” need to cry, “Keep back thy servant”? Yes, he did. And note the beauty of the prayer. If I might translate it into more metaphorical style, it is like this: “Curb thy servant from presumptuous sins.” “Keep him back, or he will wander to the edge of the precipice of sin. Hold him in, Lord; he is apt to run away; curb him; put the bridle on him; do not let him do it; let thine overpowering grace keep him holy; when he would do evil, then do thou draw him to good, and when his evil propensities would lead him astray, then do thou check him.” “Keep back thy servant from presumptuous sins.” What, then? Is it true that the best of men may sin presumptuously? Ah! It is true. It is a solemn thing to find the apostle Paul warning saints against the most loathsome of sins. He says, “Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth, fornication, uncleanness, idolatry, inordinate affection,” and such like. What! Do saints want warning against such sins as these? Yes, they do. The highest saints may sin the lowest sins, unless kept by divine grace. You old experienced Christians, boast not in your experience; you may yet trip up unless you cry, “Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe.” You whose love is fervent, whose faith is constant, whose hopes are bright, say not, “I shall never sin,” but rather cry out, “Lord, lead me not into temptation, and when there leave me not there; for unless thou hold me fast I feel I must, I shall decline, and prove an apostate after all.”

Death did not first strike Adam, the first sinful man; nor Cain, the first hypocrite; but Abel, the innocent and righteous. The first soul that met with death overcame death: the first soul that parted from earth went to heaven. Death argues not displeasure; because he whom God loved best died first; and the murderer was punished while living.

Daily Prayer & Praise 6/06/2022

Prayer for Monday 6-6-2022

Lord our God, gather us together in one flock to praise you with one heart and one voice. Let this praise ring out on earth in the midst of all the evils that still confront us. We thank You for Your protection, for all the help and deliverance You give us. We thank You for the hope You put into our hearts. We thank You for the hope that we may yet see great things done through the working of Your Spirit, for us Your children and for all peoples and nations. For Your love will not rest until life on earth has come into Your hands and all may rejoice in You. We give You praise and thanks, in Jesus’ precious name.

Amen.

God’s Wisdom or Yours – A.W. Tozer

thought of day header

For Monday June 6, 2022:

GOD’S WISDOM OR YOURS

Isaiah 53:6 (NKJV)
All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way.

The crux of your life lies right there. It doesn’t matter whether you know this little wisp of systematic theology or not; that isn’t the point. The point is that it’s either got to be God’s wisdom or yours. It’s either God’s way or yours. All that you and I have lived for, hoped for and dreamed over in our heart of hearts—life, safety, happiness, heaven, immortality, the presence of God—hinges on whether you’re going to accept the ultimate wisdom of the Triune God, as revealed in the Scriptures and in His providential working in mankind. Or are you going to go your own way?

The most perfect definition of sin that I know of is given by Isaiah in 53:6: “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way.” Turning to our own way is the essence of sin. I turn to my way because I think it is wiser than God’s way. . .

This is the crux of our life. This is the difference between revival and a dead church. This is the difference between a Spirit-filled life and a self-filled life. Who’s running it? Who’s the boss? Whose wisdom is prevailing—the wisdom of God or the wisdom of man?

On the summit of a hill in a Western State is a courthouse, so situated that the raindrops that fall on one side of the roof descend into Lake Erie, and thence, through the St. Lawrence, into the Atlantic. The drops on the other side trickle down from rivulet to river, until they reach the Ohio and Mississippi, and enter the ocean by the Gulf of Mexico. A faint breath of wind determines the destination of these raindrops for three thousand miles. So a single act determines, sometimes, a human destiny for all time and for eternity.

Philemon Verses 14-16

Philemon 1:14-16, But without your consent I wanted to do nothing, that your good deed might not be by compulsion, as it were, but voluntary. For perhaps he departed for a while for this purpose, that you might receive him forever, no longer as a slave but more than a slave—a beloved brother, especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.

I am constantly amazed at the Apostle’s wisdom when dealing with any of life’s circumstances. Now don’t get me wrong, it is the result of Paul being a new creation in Christ Jesus just like he wrote to the Corinthians, but it is an ultimate manifestation of the work of the Holy Spirit in another’s life. Paul was already an educated man, but in the ways of the Law. When he became a Christian, the Holy Spirit gave him the wisdom and knowledge to become an expert in the grace of God! What a transformation indeed.

In the above verses, the Apostle is expanding upon his previous thoughts of Onesimus as Philemon’s assistant to Paul rather than just a runaway slave and now Paul applies some “icing” as it were on the cake! Yes, he would love to keep Onesimus because of the help that he has been to Paul while in chains, but he relays to Philemon that without Philemon’s consent, he would not stoop to do such a thing, either by assumption or presumption even though they were more than friends, they were spiritual brothers.

As it was, Paul was letting his friend know that he was not going to take undo advantage of their relationship for Onesimus was still the “property” of Philemon and as such (and according to the law of the land) he was not going to take advantage of the situation. When Paul states that he would love Philemon’s decision and/or permission to be voluntary, the original language uses the term spontaneous. In other words without any coercion or force applied. Though it may seem that Paul’s use of words and his play upon the emotions of Philemon, he is not even emotionally trying to coerce his friend. It is truly reminiscent of what Paul wrote to the Corinthians:

et cheerful giver

So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. – 2 Corinthians 9:7.

Being given the chance to do something voluntarily, even if a suggestion is made, is what as Christians we need to employ in our walk with the Lord in ALL areas of our lives. Giving because you feel forced in whatever the circumstance gains you absolutely no eternal reward. It must come from your willingness of heart and in essence, this is what Paul is telling his friend. Paul in this case is in essence giving his friend the freedom to do what is right out of love for the Lord and to do it in his own choosing.

As many of you who follow me to an extent know that one of my favorite Scriptures is by the Apostle Paul in Romans:

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. – Romans 8:28.

This Scripture has been one of never-ending comfort and assurance to me. Especially as I have gotten older and have experienced some serious health issues, I have been able to see the hand of God work in all those circumstances for His glory. When You truly belong to the Lord and have surrendered to His perfect will, there is nothing in Your life, and I mean nothing, that God can’t use for the sake of His glory if You let Him and acknowledge Him.

In this next verse Paul is definitely demonstrating his spiritual maturity in his ability to look beyond what could be a very tragic circumstance to see God working in the situation. I’m not exaggerating when I say the word tragic either, because under Roman law, a slave owner could have his slave put to death for doing the very same thing that Onesimus did. I mean, Philemon, though a Christian, lost an important asset and thus he had to have suffered some financial loss as well as the possibility of being a bit upset if not outright bitter.

et rainbow in clouds

However, and I love the turn of phrase one commentator says, when he states that “Paul traces the rainbow through the dark clouds.”[1]

Paul is obviously showing his friend the possible silver lining behind the dark cloud of the situation.

According to the Apostle, his new protégé was lost to Philemon’s family for a time, but possibly for God’s perfect purpose that they can have him back forever. In one sense, this very much parallels anyone who faces loss of a loved one or friend and should give them comfort that one day, in the Lord, they WILL be reunited! Now I don’t necessarily believe that Paul is stating that Onesimus will be back with Philemon forever in the natural, but in the spiritual they WILL be brothers in Christ forever. As in everyday life, separations can be painful and hurt, but they are in the eternal scheme of things only temporary once the eternal reunion takes place in the lives of Christians!

Something else to notice when you contemplate this verse; the Apostle is speaking rather softly concerning Onesimus’ escape as a slave. Again, this demonstrates Paul’s wisdom in light of the Holy Spirit’s inspiration. I believe with all my heart, that the Lord, who has always been aware of the circumstance found it to be a perfect example of demonstrating His love to a world that has in essence escaped from His loving Kingdom. Like Onesimus who broke the law and sinned, so too did humanity way back in the Garden that was prepared for us. Paul seemed to sense or see God’s purpose in this whole situation and was relaying that very thing to his friend.

Notice too that Paul didn’t approach Philemon with, “Now see here, God has shown me His plan in all this and so you have to accept it as such also!” No, instead, he very gently and wisely stated PERHAPS this is the reason it could have happened. This allows all parties to see the possibilities that are at God’s disposal, again, no matter the circumstance.

Then Paul hinted at the possible purpose; yes you lost a slave and one as we stated before was at the time of his servitude rather useless, but now he is no longer JUST a slave but in actuality is much more than a slave, coming back to his owner. Now Philemon is also getting back a brother in Christ, one now belonging to his spiritual family! Paul was reintroducing Onesimus the slave now as Onesimus, your brother in the Lord! To any disciple of Christ who has in the past exemplified the love of Christ to others as Philemon most certainly demonstrated would immediately see the glorious turn of events in that seemingly happenstance situation.

et trusting God

His slave, whom he could have surmised that he had lost forever, found in the company of his own mentor, only to be converted to Christianity as well and then be reintroduced with all the Christian values not just as a slave but now an eternal brother and heir with him! There is just no such thing as  coincidence when people walk with the Lord. God is ALWAYS in control! Those who have walked with the Lord for any amount of time we always see God’s hands as divine providence even in the smallest areas of our lives!

So what Paul is telling Philemon outright is that because of God’s love and because His election is sure, Philemon isn’t just getting a better slave (if he so chooses to keep him that way), he’s getting a beloved brother in the Lord. Onesimus, being a new convert will most certainly benefit from the Christian mentoring that could continue under Philemon as well. After all, they both have Paul and the leading of the Holy Spirit in their situation to thank for that.

Paul was letting Philemon know that to Paul himself, Onesimus had already become a beloved brother and so his confidence was that it would be that much more for Philemon, accepting him in the Lord. Paul adds a phrase at the end of that verse, “both in the flesh and in the Lord.” This very well could be the Apostle giving further commendation to Onesimus because of his service to Paul in the flesh as well as in the Spirit of the Lord’s love as Onesimus already demonstrated and thus Philemon could expect the same thing, “in the flesh and in the Lord.”

*Side Note: Now we don’t have any real knowledge as to whether Philemon did emancipate Onesimus, but there is evidence that later on in the early church the name Onesimus does appear as a bishop in three different cities. Whether it is anyone of these three is not specifically known though the time period fits in with the age of Onesimus. The cities in question were Constantinople, Boroea and Ephesus. The fact that Ephesus is one of them does lend more credence to the possibility but it would still only be speculation.

It is always so amazing to see how the hand of God plays out in human affairs and most especially in the circumstances of those who walk with Him. Like that old saying goes, “hindsight is always better than foresight,” but when you are able to see a Biblical narrative of that truth, you can’t but be amazed at the handiwork of our Lord in the lives of those He truly loves!

God's handiwork

Next post we will begin with Philemon verse 17.

Prayer From Patiently Hopeful

*Pastor’s Note: I was looking through my WordPress Reader the other day and I spotted a prayer by Sister Hope at her website, Patiently Hopeful and as I read it, I knew it was something to pass on. The Word tells us to pray without ceasing and that is one reason I offer so many prayers on my site. But also, I have a burning hunger for the lost right now what is going on in the world. Right now, too many are looking for “signs and wonders” for proof of God’s existence, just like the religious leaders of Jesus’ day did. They NEED Jesus in their hearts, so please pray with Sister Hope and myself in agreement with this prayer. God moves mightily when His saints pray!

Also, please stop by her site and let her know you are praying for her ministry. You will be blessed as well!

1 Thessalonians 5:15b – 18, “Always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all. Rejoice always, PRAY WITHOUT CEASING, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (NKJV) [Bold emphasis mine].

Thus says the Lord: “Do not learn the way of the Gentiles; Do not be dismayed at the signs of heaven, For the Gentiles are dismayed at them.”
Jeremiah 10:2 NKJV

Dear Lord Jesus,

Thank You for Your Word. Thank You for this warning. Lord, I can see how those without You run after things which do not profit, they struggle with the future for it is a frightening thing, they have no hope in You nor direction from Your Word. Lord Jesus, please help us to remember not to be frightened by the things which the lost are frightened by. Lord, help us to be wise and cling to Your truth, not mankind’s ways. Lord, teach us daily from Your Word, that we might honor You in all things. Please hold us in Your ways, guiding us by truth and Your Holy Spirit. Lord, I do not need to fear, for You have my soul safe in Your hands. Thank You for that security. Thank You for that comfort. Lord, for those who have yet to know You, I humbly request their hearts be softened, their eyes opened, their ears unplugged, that they may see You, hear You, and believe. Thank You, Jesus for all Your wonderous works. I praise Your holy name.

Amen.
