Reflecting With God 8/29/2022

reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

All Scriptures Used are NKJV, New King James Version

For Monday August 29, 2022:

“Make two silver trumpets . . . you shall use them for calling the congregation and for directing the movement of the camps.” – Numbers 10:2.

The silver trumpet ordered and settled every movement for Israel of old. The testimony of God ought to settle and order everything for the Church now. A Christian has no right to move or act apart from divine testimony. He must wait upon the word of his Lord. Till he gets that he must stand still. When he has got it he must go forward. God can and does communicate His mind to His militant people now, just as distinctly as He did to His people of old. True, it is not by the sound of a trumpet, or the movement of a cloud, but by His Word and Spirit. It is not by aught that strikes the senses that our Father guides us, but by that which acts in the heart, the conscience and the understanding.

What a Treasure You Are!

Hebrews 2:14-18:

Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.

We also know that the Son did not come to help angels; he came to help the descendants of Abraham. Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people. Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested. (NLT)

Some of you know that there is this tree outside my house in the neighbor’s backyard that overlooks my office and I call it my “inspiration tree.” Well, the other day, I was sitting there after reading my Bible and my mind was wandering a bit and I was also talking with the Lord, and I happened to notice some dead branches in the tree.

It IS a beautiful large tree and in fact I took a picture of it a while back and had to take three shots to make what is called a vertorama of the tree. Basically it’s a vertical panorama, an image consisting of multiple images. Anyway, the point is, it is large and when it’s full of leaves it is absolutely beautiful (plus some squirrels have built there nest in it).

But I’ve recently noticed a few dead branches and I was thinking to myself what a shame that is on something so magnificent and beautiful. But that led me to the Scriptures in Romans that the Apostle Paul wrote, “Because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.” – Romans 8:21 NKJV.

Even creation, created for man’s pleasure in the beginning was subjected to the curse of Adam’s sin, Paul wrote, “not willingly” and yet it awaits our own redemption because once the curse is broken in us, it is broken in ALL of creation according to the Word! What a marvelous thought.

pd creations will be free

Yet, you know, the Holy Spirit didn’t let me off so easy right then as my thoughts continued to pursue this idea. I started thinking about the Lord knowing all this even before He created the universe and all that’s in it and that includes mankind. He knew Adam was going to sin, but God’s plan all along was to make a creation that had the free will to love Him for who He is and not just for what He could give them. The only way to do that, is for man to be free to make His own choices, but to have a way to be redeemed from the darkness that is inherent in his heart. That’s why before our very beginning, before God even created TIME for which we would have to live for a spell, He looked to the Son, incarnate at that moment, yet ever with Him and they came up with the plan to create mankind with the hopes and prospects of redemption if man chooses to accept it, because God loves His creation without limits, something that is totally beyond our ability to fully comprehend.

Now think of this; before God even spoke the words, He was seeing the end result and everything leading to that result. He knew who would accept Him and who would not, no matter what was offered. He was aware of the taint of sin that man’s choices would place upon the whole of creation. He knew that it would usher in death and suffering for a time and not just within mankind, but within everything, everywhere that has life.

If you haven’t thought about it, that is the reason there will HAVE to be a new Heaven and a new Earth. Man’s sinfulness and the darkness and taint associated with it, is just that far reaching! You can understand why Jesus used the parables of the yeast in a few of His stories, because sin is just like that; it only takes a little to saturate a lot of dough. It only takes a little sin to contaminate the whole universe that man lives in and is a part of. That is a horrific thought if you give time to think about it.

Yet God knew this all. He could have said it’s not worth it. He could have chosen to do something entirely different. I mean after all, He already had angels and they were definitely superior to man according to the Bible.

A few verses before the ones I gave above, you can see what the writer of Hebrews wrote about man’s place in rank with the angels. (See Hebrews 2:5-8). Yet despite all that God has foreseen and most likely much more than we could ever imagine, He deemed that His creation and mankind specifically was worth it.

Now follow me just a bit more; from the very beginning with Adam and all the creatures and plant-life that has ever lived, there has been death, pain and suffering from the time of Adam’s first sin. For all the thousands of years that man has walked this earth, there has been death AND destruction. Keep in mind the flood and the destruction it wrought on the Earth! Yet despite all that, God as thought that mankind is worth it.

pd man-god-sin

He sent His Son to earth, clothed as ALL man, so that He would experience every little thing that mankind has ever experienced or will ever experience even though He was also ALL God! The Spirit of God dwelt in His flesh and that why He told us He came to SHOW us the Father, who is Spirit. Yet He chose the suffering, the pains, the weariness that the flesh endures.

And here’s another thought; unless you have been spiritually active in the ministry gift God has given you AND everyone HAS a gift, some just don’t realize it due to lack of teaching, but if you have walked spiritually in that, you will notice that after your task or service is done for a time, you flesh literally rebels at the spirit working within that vessel. You can ask any preacher who has preached with an anointing on Sundays or other times, and ask them what the next day or so is like! Can you imagine if we, with our limited anointing feel that weariness in the flesh, what the Savior must have felt like as MAN after some of the miracles? He came to experience man’s plight, so I will never be convinced He used His deity to disregard that experience!

So here’s the thought; if God is willing to do all that He has done for His creation and especially for mankind, and He has allowed the outright rejection FROM His willful creation and has put up with the sin that is absolutely abhorrent to Him and the death and despair that comes with it to ALL of His creation and not just mankind, and if He is willing to send His One and only Son to take on the form of man, so that He can be mankind’s Mediator and Advocate, and He is willing for His Son to face such severe suffering and eve death even though knowing His Son would overcome death and the grave, just so a few throughout history would welcome such a great gift, here’s my question:

How valuable in the Father’s eyes and heart, does that make each and everyone who accepts Jesus AS their Redeemer?

The Father KNOWS that this creation will have to burn eventually to erase the stain of sin that taints it and yet He is willing to start creating something new for those who have, do and will accept the Redemption found in Christ Jesus alone! What kind of value can you put upon each and every life that surrenders to Christ Jesus? It is no wonder what the Bible says, Jesus is preparing for us in the Father’s coming Kingdom with paving materials made of gold and walls made of jewels. Think of it; He’s using what man thinks is so precious today and He’s using it for construction material because He feels that is just how valuable, we as His children are!

Hurst Creative - Slide Background 23

My hope and my prayer that this thought will inspire you and motivate you and encourage you to continue on in your walk, in your journey no matter what may seem to come your way. I hope this will cause you to pray more for those that are lost and not just your loved ones. God knows and has told us, not everyone will be redeemed. Some for what ever reason will just outright reject what He has instore for those who choose to love Him. But oh the joys, oh the glory that He has promised to have prepared for those He is willing to call His children.

His children, are more valuable to Him than all that man is aware that God Almighty has created! When you see the advances of Science, Knowledge in other words, that the Bible has prophesied, and when you see mankind trying to see back to the beginning of creation like they are attempting to do and when you consider the light-years, the miles, the billions of stars, and galaxies, in this known universe; remember, compared to just one of you, one of us, who call God, Father from a sincere heart, the universe is nothing compared to your value to Him!!

Revelation 21:1-3:

Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” (NKJV)

Thankfulness For Victory

prayer and praise header 3
A. A. Hodge, Prayer for Sunday 8-28-2022

Almighty God, who by the death of your dear Son Jesus Christ has destroyed death, by his rest in the tomb has sanctified the graves of the saints, and by his glorious resurrection has brought life and immortality to light; receive, we ask you, our unfeigned thanks for that victory over death and the grave which he has obtained for us and for all who sleep in him; and keep us in everlasting fellowship with all that wait for you on earth, and with all that are around you in heaven; in union with him who is the resurrection and the life, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end.

Amen.

Unbridled Affections

devotionals header

The Imitation of Christ, by Thomas à Kempis, is a Christian devotional book first composed in Medieval Latin as De Imitatione Christi (c. 1418–1427). The devotional text is divided into four books of detailed spiritual instructions. The devotional approach of The Imitation of Christ emphasizes the interior life and withdrawal from the mundanities of the world, as opposed to the active imitation of Christ practiced by other friars. The Imitation is perhaps the most widely read Christian devotional work after the Bible, and is regarded as a devotional and religious classic. The book was written anonymously in Latin in the Netherlands c. 1418–1427. Its popularity was immediate, and after the first printed edition in 1471-72, it was printed in 745 editions before 1650. Apart from the Bible, no book had been translated into more languages than the Imitation of Christ at the time.

UNBRIDLED AFFECTIONS

WHEN a man desires a thing too much, he at once becomes ill at ease. A proud and avaricious man never rests, whereas he who is poor and humble of heart lives in a world of peace. An unmortified man is quickly tempted and overcome in small, trifling evils; his spirit is weak, in a measure carnal and inclined to sensual things; he can hardly abstain from earthly desires. Hence it makes him sad to forego them; he is quick to anger if reproved. Yet if he satisfies his desires, remorse of conscience overwhelms him because he followed his passions and they did not lead to the peace he sought.

True peace of heart, then, is found in resisting passions, not in satisfying them. There is no peace in the carnal man, in the man given to vain attractions, but there is peace in the fervent and spiritual man.

Fear Stared Down

“Is it nothing to all you who pass this way? Look and see if there is any pain like my pain Which was inflicted on me, With which the LORD tormented me on the day of His fierce anger.” – Lamentations 1:12.

“But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished!” – Luke 12:50.

Fear – Of One Thing

Oliver Hazard Perry suffered a psychopathic fear of cows. He would even cross the road to avoid passing a cow. Yet that same man audaciously and fearlessly directed the American fleet against the British on the Great Lakes in the War of 1812. In the midst of battle, with his ship disabled, he rowed from it to another to keep his command afloat. Petrified of cows, he had no fear of guns, swords, or death. Fear of a single thing did not mean cowardice in all things.

Christians struggle with multiple acts of obedience, and we may think we are not Christians because of that struggle. This is not true. The outcome, not the conflict, determines our place with God. We can have every intention of obeying, yet have to fight ourselves to obey. Jesus sympathizes, for he experienced the same struggle when he confronted the cross. His sympathy goes beyond even that. He also understands what it means to accept a burden we don’t want to bear, but cannot escape.

Courage is fear that has said its prayers. – Dorothy Bernard

Fear can keep a man out of danger, but courage can support him in it. – Thomas Fuller

Courage is almost a contradiction in terms. It means a strong desire to live taking the form of a readiness to die. – G.K. Chesterton

Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point, which means at the point of highest reality. – C.S. Lewis

A Supernatural Book – John Linton – 3

great sermons header

gs john linton John Linton (1888 – 1965) John Linton is not normally listed among the elite of the evangelists in this century: Moody, Sunday, Bob Jones, Sr., Appelman, John Rice. But he was not some lesser light—God mightily moved through his ministry. He left a trail of converts to Christ as well as revived, restored, rejoicing churches.

His gospel soundness, his compelling delivery, his Scotch brogue and his devotion to our Lord made him widely acceptable. You cannot hear the inimitable Scotch brogue in his sermon, but you can enjoy its sweet and powerful message.

He died at age 77 in the pulpit while conducting evangelistic services.

The Bible – A Supernatural Book – How May We Know?

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God . . . – 2 Timothy 3:16.

How may we know the Bible is God’s Word? The answer need not make us tremble. The evidence is so overwhelming, so abundant, we are embarrassed where to begin.

If you will bring an open mind and give fair and unbiased consideration to the evidence, you will find it proven to a demonstration that there is a supernatural element in this Book, from its first page to its last, that cannot possibly be explained apart from this fact: “All scripture is given by inspiration of God.”

Just as our Lord Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Word, credentialed His claim to deity by supernatural works, so the written Word proves its divine origin by the miraculous element in its contents.

Here we find, recorded in plain language, facts that were absolutely outside the knowledge of man at the time they were recorded. Here we see events predicted hundreds, sometimes thousands, of years before they ever happened. Here are statements of accurate scientific truth, written before men became scientific and while as yet the natural sciences did not exist.

I present to you five strong reasons sustaining the claim of the Bible to divine, authoritative and unique inspiration.

  • The Scientific Accuracy of the Bible
  • The Historical Inerrancy of the Bible
  • The Marvelous Unity of the Bible
  • The Fulfilled Prophecy of the Bible
  • The Wondrous Vitality of the Bible

Pastor’s Note: In the next few weeks we will cover each of these topics.

All Things

thought of day header

For Sunday August 28, 2022

ALL THINGS

Ephesians 1:11 (NKJV)
[We are] predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things
according to the counsel of His will.

In his overruling providence, our Lord not only works all things for our good (Romans 8:28) but also works all things according to the counsel of His will. His sovereign power can even transform our faults, failures, and mistakes into tapestries that bring Him glory. That doesn’t give us the freedom to sin, but it does invite us to bring our “goofs” to Jesus, confident that they have been covered by His blood.

One evening just before an outreach service, evangelist D. L. Moody lost his temper with a man who had insulted him. Moody actually shoved the man. This meeting is killed, thought a friend. The large number who have seen the whole thing will hardly be in a condition to be influenced by anything more Mr. Moody may say tonight. But Moody rose with trembling voice, and his humble apology and tender confession so moved the crowd that the tide turned and the meeting was touched with divine power.

This doesn’t give us an excuse for losing our tempers, but isn’t it wonderful to know that our Lord works all things—even our faults—for our good and His glory? Encourage yourself with that today!

Slippings and strayings there will be, no doubt, but the everlasting arms
are beneath us; we shall be caught, rescued, restored.

The True Test of a Prophecy Message

prophetic words header wp

Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good. – 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21.

As I was studying several articles on end-time prophecy this past couple of weeks and especially in relation to the Church, the Body of Christ, I ran across several things worth stating as well as repeating if I’ve mentioned them before. Ironically this came at a time when I found several prophecies on social media that I wasn’t even looking for. They just happened to pop up on my timeline and out of curiosity read a couple of them.

To me, it is always fascinating (I’m being nice) the number of people who rely on these very popular “prophets” because they say they pray often, and the Lord gave them these words and yet, the ones I read said the words came from God THROUGH watchman angels, oh excuse me, watchman GUARDIAN angels, as I guess the Holy Spirit was to busy with other things at that moment to speak to them. I later saw one where this same person started off naming the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, as part of her prophecy, based on the character from C.S. Lewis’ allegorical stories, as if he is the true Lion of Judah. I didn’t get very far into that one.

Oh, by the way, this “prophet” does use a lot of Bible or “church” terms and she does sound spiritual, but it reminds me of what Paul wrote to his protégé Timothy about “having a form of godliness but denying the power thereof.” (see 2 Timothy 3:5). It goes to show me that what the Bible itself prophesied about the end-times and the fact that people would gather to themselves teachers who would tell them what they want to hear. You know, the itching ears reference. It shows me that TRUE Bible prophecy can’t be disputed!

Anyway, a couple of things I picked up in my studying that I wanted to relay for those interested and especially when it comes to the practical purpose of Bible prophecy (not these day to day religious fortune tellers), the prophecies that have been recorded for the Church, the Body of Christ.

A very esteemed and well-known Bible prophecy expert, Charles Dyer, emphasizes this purpose of Bible prophecy:

“God gave prophecy to change our hearts, not to fill our heads with knowledge. God never predicted future events just to satisfy our curiosity about the future. Every time God announces events that are future, He includes with His predictions practical applications to life. God’s pronouncements about the future carry with them specific advice for the ‘here and now.’”

During my studies, I read the anecdote about the person that went to a local psychic, but when the person arrived at the little shop, there was a sign on the door that read, “Closed due to unforeseen circumstances.” It reminds me so much of the ads that used to run on the television about the call-in psychics. (Don’t know if they still do it or not).

With God, especially in the role of our Heavenly Father, there are NO unforeseen circumstances for nothing takes God by surprise, absolutely nothing! God Almighty, the Creator of All, rules over His creation, ALL of His creation, with absolute sovereignty.

A while back I did a series of teachings on the Character, Nature and Attributes of God. The God of the Bible knows everything (omniscient), is present everywhere (omnipresent), and possesses all power (omnipotent). By the way, when I state that He is present everywhere, I don’t just mean geographically either. I also mean everywhere outside of time itself! This is why NOTHING can ever take Him by surprise.

pw no unforseen situations

Because He knows all things and is present at all times in all places, He has the power to not only know the future, but also to fulfill all of His predictions. Too  many people tend to forget that God has had a plan for mankind and His creation long before He ever laid the very first foundation stone!

So back to the purpose of Bible prophecy; the true test is the content of the message, not miracles. The true prophet spoke only in the name of the Lord and called people closer to God, not away from God. The miracles only lent credence and authority to the message.

As we have seen, prophets often spoke a divine message for their own day, and their message was always closely tied to a predictive element of future judgment for disobedience and future blessing for obedience.

The Bible always links prophecy with living a godly life. Since Jesus came, and especially the way He interacted with the religious leaders of His day concerning their demands to always have a sign, the SIGNS have been everywhere and in fact they have ALWAYS been everywhere around us according to the Word of God. It’s no wonder Jesus DID condemn the religious leaders, because of anyone, they should have known better because the Word says, they held the “oracles” or the very words of God, Himself!

That does NOT mean God doesn’t still do supernatural miracles, but with the proliferation of the written Word of God to back up everything in the Nature of the Living Word, Christ Jesus, a person who has “eyes to see, and ears to hear,” shouldn’t be running after signs and wonders when the evidence is all around us!

Do you know who wants the signs and wonders? Do you realize who the ones are who question WHY there are no more miracles (so they believe)? It’s those that are still struggling with unbelief! The one thing that PLEASES the Father, according to the writer of Hebrews, is the faith we have to believe what we don’t see! (Hebrews 11:1, 6). So what does that say about unbelief? Simply put, you can’t please God if you don’t have faith. It’s no wonder Jesus was so upset with the religious leaders of His day. They had been given ALL the tools necessary to see the Father for Who He really was and for the Son that stood before them, yet all they could think of, despite the miracles Jesus did do, was “show us a sign from heaven!”

I’m going to repeat it in closing because I’ve been stating this a lot lately, but if you are relying on what the so-called modern-day prophets are telling you for a day-to-day or week-to-week, or even a month-to-month head-start on the future and your are neglecting what God has already showed will happen, then you are NOT walking in faith. You are walking according to what some religious-sounding, pleasant, charismatic person is telling you rather than on what God has told us for our day to day existence.

I’ll give you a prophecy based on Biblical Spiritual principles as I get ready to sign off:

If you continue to trust in what a person tells you is going to make life better for all, without relying on already given Bible prophecy and the Word of God, you’re going to miss the proverbial boat! (Think of the Ark as an example).

Our God, will NEVER leave His children and loved ones in the dark concerning their spiritual futures!! That’s His promise, not mine! You can count on and walk believing in THAT!

pw trusting God

Daily Prayer & Praise 8/26/2022

Prayer for Friday 8-26-2022

Lord our God, be our Father and care for Your children here on earth, where it is often bitterly hard and where everything seems to turn against us. Keep us faithful in our inner life, drawing all our strength from You, the eternal power of life, and from Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world and through His Holy Spirit. For Jesus has promised to come to us, and You will send Him through His Guiding Holy Spirit in our time of need. Let Your strong hand be with those who often do not know where to turn. Show us paths we can follow, to the glory of Your name in all eternity. For the sake of and in the name of Jesus, we beseech You.

Amen.

Moving Six Directions At Once

The earth moves in at least SIX different ways, and yet we on earth are not dizzy. The movements are:

  1. The earth spins on its axis, like a top, at the speed of one-third mile per second or 1,000 miles per hour. If it were 100 miles per hour, the earth would alternately freeze and burn.
  2. It weaves slowly back and forth on its axis, tilting to an angle of 23 degrees, then swinging slowly back, twice a year. This gives us our seasons.
  3. The earth with the moon is swinging around the sun, once a year at the rate of 18½ miles per second. And it never varies 1/10,000th of a second on this annual trip.
  4. The sun, with all its planets, is on a trip, rushing northward at 12 miles per second.
  5. The nearby stars, with our planetary system, are revolving at 180 miles per second around the Milky Way’s center.
  6. The Milky Way, our galaxy, with all its millions of stars, is on a tremendous journey, plunging through space at terrific speed. Who knows where?

God guides and controls them all.

Therefore I will shake the heavens, And the earth will move out of her place, In the wrath of the LORD of hosts And in the day of His fierce anger. – Isaiah 13:13

2 Chronicles 16:9 – Ole Hallesby

thought of day header

For Friday August 26, 2022:

2 CHRONICLES 16:9

2 Chronicles 16:9 (NKJV)
“For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth,
to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.”

The Word of God is two-edged. This word also. And very sharp. It cuts to the very heart, for it speaks of the heart which is perfect toward the Lord. And puts to all of us the very pointed and persistent question: Do you fear God with all your heart?

Is your heart in your prayers? Or is it habit and duty which drive you to pray?

Is your heart in your reading of the Bible? Or do you read a chapter merely for the sake of having read it?

Is your heart in your striving against sin? Or do you fight against sin simply because you fear its consequences, your heart meanwhile clinging to sin?

Is your heart in your remorse? Do you grieve because you sin, because you act contrary to the will of God, or do you grieve simply because you fear the consequences of sin?

Is your heart in the sacrifices you make? Are you glad to give of your time and your money, are you glad to forego your own comfort and convenience?

What is your answer to these searching questions?

I imagine some one will say: “My heart is cut to the quick by all of these questions. My heart is so wicked that, alas, I do not know what to do.”

My friend, I shall preach the Gospel to you today, the glad tidings that you, yes, you have a heart that is perfect toward Him.

“No, you are mistaken,” you will reply. You will say: “My heart is divided; I am half-hearted, lukewarm.”

Yes, all people have hearts like that, but all those who make known their lukewarm and divided hearts before the Lord, all those are perfect toward Him.

Draw nigh to His heart which broke in death for your divided heart. And give thanks to Him that you may rest in Christ with everything—also with your heart.

Reflecting With God 8/26/2022

reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

All Scriptures Used are NKJV, New King James Version

For Friday August 26, 2022:

At the command of the LORD the children of Israel would journey, and at the command of the LORD they would camp; as long as the cloud stayed above the tabernacle they remained encamped. – Numbers 9:18.

This is the secret of peace and calm elevation. If an Israelite in the desert, had taken it into his head to make some movement, independent of Jehovah; if he took it upon him to move when the cloud was at rest, or to halt while the cloud was moving, we can easily see what the result would have been. And so it will ever be with us. If we move when we ought to rest, or rest when we ought to move, we shall not have the divine presence with us. “At the commandment of the Lord they rested in the tents, and at the commandment of the Lord they journeyed.” They were kept in constant waiting upon God, the most blessed position that any one can occupy; but it must be occupied ere its blessedness can be tasted. It is a reality to be known, not a mere theory to be talked of. May it be ours to prove it all our journey through!

Daily Prayer & Praise 8/25/2022

Prayer for Thursday 8-25-2022

Grant us Your Spirit, Lord our God, that we may discern Your good, acceptable, and perfect will. Give us joy in fighting on Your side, so that what is good, acceptable, and perfect may be given to the world. Wherever we are and whatever work we do, give us zeal to serve You tirelessly and be guided by You so that Your most perfect and righteous will may be done and Your Kingdom comes, sooner than later, so that already today we may find perfect joy even though only in hope. By the authority of Your Son and in His name we pray.

Amen.

Fast-Moving Desert

The Sahara Desert in North Africa is the largest desert in the world. Its greatest length stretches 3,200 miles from east to west.

The desert is on the move. Right across Africa the Sahara is creeping south at an average rate of half a mile a month—in some parts four times as fast.

A 4000-mile belt below the desert is affected by drought. Animals die, crops wither, people starve. Survivors crowd into a dwindling area of Savannah grassland, where overgrazing speeds the process. When rain does fall, it comes in sudden downpours which do more harm than good by washing away what little topsoil there is.

Whole countries in the Sahel, the semi-arid zone below the Sahara, are threatened with extinction. Weather experts predict that the earth is in for decades of low rainfall, which may turn richly cultivated areas into dustbowls.

These have power to shut heaven, so that no rain falls in the days of their prophecy; and they have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with all plagues, as often as they desire. – Revelation 11:6

The Fruitfulness of Friendship – Oswald Chambers

thought of day header

For Thursday August 25, 2022:

THE FRUITFULNESS OF FRIENDSHIP

John 15:15 (NKJV)
“I have called you friends.”

We never know the joy of self-sacrifice until we abandon in every particular. Self-surrender is the most difficult thing—‘I will if . . . !’ ‘Oh well, I suppose I must devote my life to God.’ There is none of the joy of self-sacrifice in that.

As soon as we do abandon, the Holy Ghost gives us an intimation of the joy of Jesus. The final aim of self-sacrifice is laying down our lives for our Friend. When the Holy Ghost comes in, the great desire is to lay down the life for Jesus; the thought of sacrifice never touches us because sacrifice is the love passion of the Holy Ghost.

Our Lord is our example in the life of self-sacrifice—“I delight to do Thy will, O My God.” He went on with His sacrifice with exuberant joy. Have I ever yielded in absolute submission to Jesus Christ? If Jesus Christ is not the lodestar, there is no benefit in the sacrifice; but when the sacrifice is made with the eyes on Him, slowly and surely the molding influence begins to tell.

Beware of letting natural affinities hinder your walk in love. One of the most cruel ways of killing natural love is by disdain built on natural affinities. The affinity of the saint is the Lord Jesus. Love for God is not sentimental; to love as God loves is the most practical thing for the saint.

“I have called you friends.” It is a friendship based on the new life created in us, which has no affinity with our old life, but only with the life of God. It is unutterably humble, unsulliedly pure, and absolutely devoted to God.

All Scriptures Used are NKJV, New King James Version

For Thursday August 25, 2022:

So Moses declared to the children of Israel the feasts of the LORD. – Leviticus 23:44.

The feasts of the Lord. This was their true character, their original title; but in the Gospel of John, they are called “feasts of the Jews.” They had long ceased to be Jehovah’s feasts. He was shut out. They did not want Him; and hence, in John 7, when Jesus was asked to go up to “the Jews’ feast of tabernacles” He answered, “My time is not yet come;” and when He did go up it was “privately,” to take His place outside of the whole thing, and to call upon every thirsty soul to come unto Him and “drink.” There is a solemn lesson in this. Divine institutions are speedily marred in the hands of man; but, oh! how deeply blessed to know that the thirsty soul that feels the barrenness and drought connected with a scene of empty religious formality, has only to flee to Jesus and drink freely of His exhaustless springs, and so become a channel of blessing to others.
~ C. H. McINTOSH

Daily Prayer & Praise 8/24/2022

Prayer for Wednesday 8-24-2022

Lord our God, we long to come into Your glorious light, to live in Your unyielding strength, that we may do what pleases and glorifies You and furthers Your Kingdom on earth. Protect us from evil and do not let us be wounded by the flaming arrows of the evil one. Make paths for us and give us discernment whenever we do not know how to go forward. We always know You are our Father. Because You are our Father, we want to be courageous and persevere to the end so that You can make our lives bear fruit for You, to the glory of Your most holy name. In the name of Your Son, Jesus, we come to You.

Amen.
