Family, A Precious Gift

Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God . . . – 1 John 3:1-2.

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ . . . – Romans 8:16-17.

It doesn’t matter where a person is in the world, or even what their station in life is, for the most part family will always be uppermost in their thoughts. Whether it is sons and daughters to parents or husbands and wives to each other and their children, most people look upon family as a very special and precious thing.

However, if you are a Christian, someone who has surrendered their lives and their will to the will of Christ Jesus as one led by His Holy Spirit, have you considered just how immeasurably precious you are to our Heavenly Father?

The Apostle John in his first Epistle or letter, uses the phrases and titles of family members throughout his letter, but I love the beginning of what has been designated as chapter 3. In the New King James Version it speaks of the love the Father has bestowed upon us and in the New International Version it uses the word lavished. Now think of this for a moment, as it’s easy to just skim by it.

The Father’s love is not just a haphazard casual type of love, it is something that He has purposefully granted, bestowed and lavished upon us! He considers us, based on His love for us something most wonderfully precious. When John writes, if you consider how he is writing, he almost writes as if he is utterly amazed at the prospect of God’s love.

Yet, here is the miracle, the most amazing thing about it; because of that love that God LAVISHES, graciously, generously and abundantly on us, we are recognized by Him, the Creator of all that ever was, all that is and all that ever will be, AND called His children! Let that sink into your thoughts for a moment. Consider it and all it means! He created the Universe, its expanse and all that is in it and compared to that we aren’t even specks, YET, in His heart and in His eyes, we ARE His children! I’m probably pretty close to the age the Apostle John was when he was exiled and I STILL find that beyond comprehension!

pd lavished love

We ARE sons and daughters of the Almighty God! We are His heirs, because of His great love in sending Jesus Christ to draw us and show us that He desires to be our Father. There is no relationship in the natural that can even come close to that truth. We can love our natural families so very deeply and if we truly do, it is only because the Holy Spirit gives us the power and anointing to be able to do that for we all, in the natural have flaws and weaknesses. Yet even that love is flawed at times. However, in our relationship with our Heavenly Father there are no weaknesses or flaws in His love for us. Because Jesus Christ has saved us for redemption, which will come finally in the future, we will be able to be with our Creator, with the One that created us out of a love unfailing and incomprehensible to our natural minds and we will be able to love Him back without flaws or weaknesses because one of the great promises of being a child of His is that we shall be like Jesus. We will be co-heirs with Christ, but we shall be like Him, in character and nature, able to fully give glory and honor to our Heavenly Father for eternity.

When we move out from our families, our parents and such, we do not forget them by any means, but our communion with them is not the same as it was and in truth will never be the same because we embark on a lifelong journey of our own discovery. However, with our Heavenly Father, because He is Spirit and has imparted His Spirit to abide within us, His promise to never leave us nor forsake can never be broken. He remains with us no matter where life OR the leading of His Spirit takes us.

The other amazing aspect of that is the fact that, in the natural we may have a limited number of family and relatives, in the spiritual, with God as our Heavenly Father, we truly DO have brothers and sisters all over the world. It’s true that we may not know them yet, but one day there is going to be an awesome reunion. For me, it causes me to truly respect and honor that term “brothers and sisters” because there is a depth there that can never be matched in the natural. Because of the spiritual depth of that fact, no matter where I go in the world, there will always be someone there who will be able to love me as truly one of the family!

My encouragement to all today and especially in the light of all that is going on around us in the world, do not take for granted the most precious gift that the Lord has bestowed and lavished upon us through His love in regards to our eternal family. When you consider just how great that love for us is and that we are partakers of that same love and thus that same power and anointing with others all over the world, it should brighten anyone’s day.

pd God's loveA final thought; we may be pilgrims in this world once we have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior, but because of Him and because of the love of the Father, no matter where we go, especially as pilgrims, we will always have family members that are on the same journey and the same pathway to eternity as we are on.

Be encouraged, stay strong, continue to please our Father by walking in faith. We may not see what tomorrow holds for us, but faith tells us that our Father DOES know and He has already prepared the path for each of us! God Bless!

Daily Prayer & Praise 9/01/2022

prayer and praise header 4
Prayer for Thursday 9-1-2022

Dear Father in Heaven, open our hearts to see what is good in our lives. May the light in our hearts shine clearly so that we see, recognize, and live in accordance with what comes from eternity and belongs to our true nature, brought to us through Christ Jesus. Keep us from being blinded and deafened by the experiences that will pass by. Help us to rise above them even in suffering and to wait patiently for what is becoming new and perfect. Praise and glory to Your name so that we too can say, “The old has passed away; see, everything has become new!” In Christ Jesus’ name we humbly pray.

Amen.

The Purpose of Education

food for thought header 2
As 70-year-old philosophy professor Sidney Hook conducted his last class at New York University after 45 years of teaching there, he said he would break one of his rules and try to explain his own philosophy. “Though there is no substitute for intelligence, it is not enough,” said Hook. “There are human beings who have intelligence but do not have the moral courage to act on it. On the other hand, moral courage without intelligence is dangerous. It leads to fanaticism. Education should develop both intelligence and courage.”

Destiny of Holiness – Oswald Chambers

thought of day header

For Thursday September 1, 2022:

DESTINY OF HOLINESS

1 Peter 1:16 (NKJV)
“Be holy, for I am holy.”

Continually restate to yourself what the purpose of your life is. The destined end of man is not happiness, nor health, but holiness. Nowadays we have far too many affinities, we are dissipated with them; right, good, noble affinities which will yet have their fulfilment, but in the meantime God has to atrophy them. The one thing that matters is whether a man will accept the God Who will make him holy. At all costs a man must be rightly related to God.

Do I believe I need to be holy? Do I believe God can come into me and make me holy? If by your preaching you convince me that I am unholy, I resent your preaching. The preaching of the gospel awakens an intense resentment because it must reveal that I am unholy; but it also awakens an intense craving. God has one destined end for mankind, viz., holiness. His one aim is the production of saints. God is not an eternal blessing-machine for men; He did not come to save men out of pity: He came to save men because He had created them to be holy. The Atonement means that God can put me back into perfect union with Himself, without a shadow between, through the Death of Jesus Christ.

Never tolerate through sympathy with yourself or with others any practice that is not in keeping with a holy God. Holiness means unsullied walking with the feet, unsullied talking with the tongue, unsullied thinking with the mind—every detail of the life under the scrutiny of God. Holiness is not only what God gives me, but what I manifest that God has given me.

Reflecting With God 9/01/2022

For Thursday September 1, 2022:

“There we saw the giants . . . and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.” – Numbers 13:33.

The ten spies differed from Caleb and Joshua in their report of the land of Canaan. There are three words here beginning with G—the word “God,” the word “giant,” and the word “grasshopper.” Now, note, these spies made a great mistake as to the position of these three words; they compared themselves with the people of the land and said, “And in their sight we were as grasshoppers.” If they had compared the people of the land with God, they would have come back, as Caleb and Joshua did, who said in effect, “We have compared the giants with God, and the giants are as grasshoppers.”

Daily Prayer & Praise 8/31/2022

Prayer for Wednesday 8-31-2022

Dear Father in Heaven, open our hearts to see and feel how our lives have been blest. Open our hearts to Your unfailing blessings so that we may look forward in thankfulness and joy to what lies ahead. Grant that we may be faithful to what we have received from You and never again lose ourselves in the passing moment. Teach us to be gracious and full of gratitude. May we hold to all You have brought to our hearts from eternity, that Your name may be honored and our lives shaped anew in Jesus Christ. Give us courage to overcome the evils in life and to look with joy and confident expectation to the future, when the powers of Your Kingdom will be ever more clearly revealed, and our Redeemer, Jesus Christ is sitting rightfully on His throne. In His glorious name, the name above all other names, we ask these things of You.

Amen.

Wesley Changes The English Countryside

food for thought header 2
John Wesley rode up and down through the English countryside during the last half of the eighteenth century, his soul touched by the poverty, the drabness, and the ugliness of the village life. One day he hit upon the scheme of distributing flower seeds to the housewives, and offering prizes for the most beautiful gardens, with the result that today the English countryside has the reputation of being the most colorful in the world. One man, almost single-handedly, changed the complexion of the rural districts of an entire nation.

Psalm 139:24 – A.B. Simpson

thought of day header

For Wednesday August 31, 2022:

PSALM 139:24

Psalm 139:24 (NKJV)
Lead me in the way everlasting.

There is often apparently but little difference in two distinct lives between constant victory and frequent victory. But that one little difference constitutes a world of success or failure. The one is the Divine, the other is the human; the one is the everlasting way, the other the transient and the imperfect. God wants to lead us to the way everlasting, and to establish us and make us immovable as He. We little know the seriousness of the slightest surrender. It is but the first step in a downward progression, and God only knows where it shall end.

Let us be “not of them that draw back unto perdition, but of them that believe unto the saving our the soul.”

Your victory to-day is but preparing the way for a greater victory to-morrow, and your surrender to-day is opening the door for a more terrible defeat in the days to come. Let us, therefore, whatever we have claimed from our blessed Master, commit it to His keeping, and take Him to establish us and hold us fast in the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.

For Wednesday August 31, 2022:

I am not able to bear all these people alone, because the burden is too heavy for me. – Numbers 11:14.

It is most needful for all servants of Christ to remember, that whenever the Lord places a man in a position of responsibility, He will both fit him for it and maintain him in it. It is, of course, another thing altogether if a man will rush unsent into any field of work, or any post of difficulty or danger. In such a case, we may assuredly look for a thorough break down, sooner or later. But when God calls a man to a certain position, He will endow him with the needed grace to occupy it. He never sends any one a warfare at his own charges; and therefore all we have to do is to draw upon Him for all we need. This holds good in every case. We can never fail if we only cling to the living God. We can never run dry, if we are drawing from the fountain. Our tiny springs will soon dry up; but our Lord Jesus Christ declares that, “He that believeth in me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”

Pleasing God

I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me. – 1 Corinthians 4:3-4 (NIV)

The Corinthians battled over the preacher whom they judged to be the best or the message that they liked most, but Paul dismissed their judgment entirely. Human judgment was as worthless before God as human wisdom (1 Corinthians 2:6). Because he had been called by God to serve, Paul owed allegiance to God alone, and he looked to God alone to judge his performance. As a steward serves the master of the estate, so Paul served God. Paul did not concern himself with what any group of people thought of his teaching style or his message. Paul did not even depend on his own self-evaluation—I do not even judge myself. When he did look within, Paul could honestly say that he had a clear conscience, but that did not mean he was innocent. The Lord alone could make that pronouncement. Paul was accountable to God and would be judged by God alone.

PLEASING GOD

The New Testament illustrates the importance of pleasing God, not people. The secret to pleasing God is faith, obedience, and service. (The following verses are quoted from the NLT.)

“Jesus said, ‘When you have lifted up the Son of Man on the cross, then you will realize that . . . I do nothing on my own, but I speak what the Father taught me.’” – John 8:29.

Believers are to follow totally, just as Christ did.

“So our aim is to please him always, whether we are here in this body or away from this body.” – 2 Corinthians 5:9.

Believers should aim always to please God in their words and actions.

“Those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit.” – Galatians 6:8.

Believers are assured of great reward when they live to please and honor God.

“Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord.” – Ephesians 5:10.

Believers will be shown what God wants them to do if they ask him.

“We ask [God] to make you wise with spiritual wisdom. Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and you will continually do good, kind things for others.” – Colossians 1:9-10.

Believers can ask God for wisdom to help them live to honor and please him.

“Our purpose is to please God, not people. He is the one who examines the motives of our hearts.” – 1 Thessalonians 2:4.

Believers must always focus on pleasing God; then even if they don’t please people, they know that their consciences are clear.

“Finally . . . we urge you in the name of the Lord Jesus to live in a way that pleases God.” – 1 Thessalonians 4:1.

Believers are urged to please God because of what Jesus has done for them.

“It is impossible to please God without faith.” – Hebrews 11:6.

The most important ingredient to pleasing God is faith that trusts him for salvation.

Daily Prayer & Praise 8/30/2022

Prayer for Tuesday 8-30-2022

Dear Father in Heaven, we thank You for moving our hearts so that we may know we are Your children. Even in the midst of turmoil and evil, fear and pain, You bring us happiness; we can know that You are holding us with Your right hand, as Your Word tells us, and will finally deliver us from all evil. Let Your Abiding Spirit be at work everywhere. Give us patience when time is needed in our own hearts and in the hearts of all people, who also belong to You. Continue to strengthen us so that even the heaviest burden does not crush us and we may exult in hope because You right every wrong, to the glory of Your name and the furtherance of Your eternal Kingdom. In the name of Christ Jesus, hear us as we know You do.

Amen.

Origin of Canned Food

food for thought header 2
Leon Lunden, research director of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters Local 56, tells us that when Napoleon’s armies invaded Europe, his general discovered that an “army marches on its stomach” and that foraging for food wastes time. But when the armies tried to carry their food with them it spoiled.

Thus, in 1795, the French government offered a prize of 12,000 francs to any Frenchman who could find a way to preserve food. Alas, it wasn’t until 1810 that Nicholas Appert claimed the money. After years of experiment, he discovered the basic principle of modern canning. He put food into a glass jar, sealed it and then cooked it at a high temperature. The food remained edible after standing many days.

Independence of Christianity – C.H. Spurgeon

thought of day header

For Tuesday August 30, 2022:

INDEPENDENCE OF CHRISTIANITY

Zechariah 4:6 (NKJV)
“‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the LORD of hosts.”

The grand thing the church wants in this time, is God’s Holy Spirit. You all get up plans and say, “Now, if the church were altered a little bit, it would go better.” You think if there were different ministers, or different church order, or something different, then all would be well. No, dear friends, it is not there the mistake lies; it is that we want more of the Spirit. It is as if you saw a locomotive engine upon a railway, and it would not go, and they put up a driver, and they said, “Now, that driver will just do.” They try another and another. One proposes that such-and-such a wheel should be altered, but still it will not go. Some one then bursts in amongst those who are conversing and says, “No, friends; but the reason why it will not move, is because there is no steam. You have no fire, you have no water in the boiler: that’s why it will not go. There may be some faults about it; it may want a bit of paint here and there, but it will go well enough with all those faults if you do but get the steam up.” But now people are saying, “This must be altered, and that must be altered;” but it would go no better unless God the Spirit should come to bless us. You may have the same ministers, and they shall be a thousand times more useful for God, if God is pleased to bless them. You shall have the same deacons, they shall be a thousand times more influential than they are now, when the Spirit is poured down upon them from on high. That is the church’s great want, and until that want be supplied, we may reform, and reform, and still be just the same. We want the Holy Spirit.

For Tuesday August 30, 2022:

And when the dew fell on the camp in the night, the manna fell on it. – Numbers 11:9.

The manna was so pure and delicate that it could not bear contact with earth. It fell upon the dew, and had to be gathered ere the sun was up. Each one, therefore, had to rise early and seek his daily portion. So it is with the people of God now. The heavenly manna must be gathered fresh every morning. Yesterday’s manna will not do for to-day, or to-day’s for to-morrow. We must feed upon Christ every day, with fresh energy of the spirit, else we shall cease to grow. Moreover, we must make Christ our primary object. We must seek Him “early.”

Record of Increasing Earthquakes

food for thought header 2

In the 9th century, there was one major earthquake; in the 11th century, two; in the 13th century, three; in the 16th, two; 17th, two; 18th, five (including the Lisbon); and in the 19th century, nine major earthquakes. So far in the 20th century, there have been over 40 (including the Peking quake).

From the World Almanac comes another set of facts: there were only 6 earthquakes of strength between 1800 to 1896. But in each decade from 1897, until 1947, there were either 2 or 3, and in the decade from 1947 to 1956, there were 7. From 1957 to 1966, there were 17.

Time magazine’s front cover for its Sept. 1, 1975, issue was a split earth with this inscription: “FORECAST: EARTHQUAKE.” Since that date there have been over 30 significant earthquakes—in China, Guatemala, Italy, Indonesia, Soviet Central Asia, Central America, and many other places.

The year 1976 experienced at least 50 significant quakes (intensity 6.5) and 18 major quakes (over 7.0). An estimated 695,000 deaths—the highest in modern history—in 1976 were reported by the US Geological Survey.

*Note: The facts reported are a little older, so you can imagine how much they’ve increased!

Saved By Grace – A.W. Tozer

thought of day header

For Monday August 29, 2022:

SAVED BY GRACE

Ephesians 2:8-9 (NKJV)
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves;
it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Nobody has ever been saved, from the day that Abel offered his bloody lamb on a homemade altar, down to the latest convert made today, except out of the goodness of God. Because of God’s grace, His mercy, His lovingkindness, His goodness and graciousness, His cordiality and approachability, He kindly saved people. We’ve taken the word “grace” and made a technical term out of it.

The people in the Old Testament were not saved by keeping anything, because we deserved hell, and if God had acted according to justice alone, He simply would have pulled the stopper out and flushed us all down to hell and been done with it. But God out of His lovingkindness graciously forgave those who would come according to the conditions God laid down. Everybody is saved by grace. Abel was saved by grace. Noah was saved by grace—“But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.” (Genesis 6:8). So was Moses and all the rest down to the coming of Jesus and His dying on the cross. All were saved by grace out of the goodness of God. And everybody’s been saved by grace out of the goodness of God ever since.
