Red Sea Parting a Mirage?

A Pennsylvania State University physicist suggested that the biblical story of the parting of the Red Sea may have been the result of a desert mirage.

The physicist, Dr. Alistair Fraser, said Christ walking on water also could have been a mirage.
He made his comments at a meeting of the Optical Society of America.

Dr. Fraser told the meeting there were photographs that reproduced both phenomena. He said the biblical description of the Red Sea crossing was a particularly accurate picture of a mirage.

Knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts . . . – 2 Peter 3:3

Philippians 4:5 – A.B. Simpson

thought of day header

For Wednesday August 24, 2022:

PHILIPPIANS 4:5

Philippians 4:5 (NKJV)
Let your gentleness be known to all men.

The very test of consecration is our willingness not only to surrender the things that are wrong, but to surrender our rights, to be willing to be subject. When God begins to subdue a soul, He often requires us to yield the things that are of little importance in themselves, and thus break our neck and subdue our spirit.

No Christian worker can ever be used of God until the proud self-will is broken, and the heart is ready to yield to God’s every touch, no matter through whom it may come.

Many people want God to lead them in their way and they will brook no authority or restraint. They will give their money, but they want to dictate how it shall be spent. They will work as long as you let them please themselves, but let any pressure come and you immediately run up against, not the grace of resignation, but a letter of resignation, withdrawing from some important trust, and arousing a whole community of criticizing friends, equally disposed to have their own opinions and their own will about it. It is destructive of all real power.

For Wednesday August 24, 2022:

He put the Urim (light) and the Thummim (perfection) in the breastplate. – Leviticus 8:8.

What the Urim and the Thummim actually were no man has been able to find out. But whatever they were, there can be no doubt as to what our Urim and Thummim are. We are not left without light and perfection.… Our Urim and Thummim are the Old and New Testaments. Keep these in the heart; be at home with them in all their wondrous variety of speech, of doctrine, of song, of inspiration, and of instruction of every kind; and then you never can stray far from the path providential that makes its own course straight up to the God who started the mysterious Outgoing.

Daily Prayer & Praise 8/23/2022

Prayer for Tuesday 8-23-2022

Lord our God, we thank You that You have given us an entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We thank You that You have already begun to give us new vision, that already many things are being transformed, so that we may go gladly and confidently on our way with hope for whatever is still unsolved. May all this live in our hearts and fill us with thanks to You. We want to be courageous and keep in sight what still needs to be changed. Then we can take part as workers in Your vineyard. May the light You have given us continue to shine in us and burn ever more brightly, as You have promised. Humbly, yet fervently in Jesus name we pray.

Amen.

Plagues In The Past

Between AD 250–262, a pestilence raged all over the Roman Empire, from Egypt to the Hebrides. In some Italian cities, up to four-fifths of the population were wiped out. Men died like flies. Gibbons says that statisticians of the succeeding age estimated that one-half the human race perished in twelve years!

In the 6th century, the bubonic plague spread to Europe as part of a recurring cycle in the entire Roman world for 50 years. The Venerable Bede mentions four distinct waves between 664–683.

Another most terrible plague was the Black Death of 1347–48. It was estimated that one-fourth of Europe’s population died, about 25 million.

Even as late as 1918, an influenza epidemic killed in four weeks more than twice as many as the warring armies had destroyed in four years.

“For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences . . .” – Matthew 24:7

Five Fears – C.H. Spurgeon

thought of day header

For Tuesday August 23, 2022:

FIVE FEARS

Ecclesiastes 8:12 (NKJV)
Yet I surely know that it will be well with those who fear God, who fear before Him.

Fear may be yoked into the service of God. True fear, not fearing, but believing, saves the soul; not doubt, but confidence, is the strength and the deliverance of the Christian. Still, fear, as being one of those powers which God has given us, is not in itself sinful. Fear may be used for the most sinful purposes; at the same time it may be so ennobled by grace, and so used for the service of God, that it may become the very grandest part of man. In fact, Scripture has honored fear, for the whole of piety is comprehended in these words, “Fear God”; “the fear of the Lord”; “them that fear him.” These phrases are employed to express true piety, and the men who possess it. Fear, I have said, may ruin the soul. Alas! It has ruined multitudes. O Fear, you are the rock upon which many a ship has been wrecked. Many a soul has suffered spiritual destruction through you, but then it has been not the fear of God, but the fear of man. Many have rushed against the thick bosses of the Almighty’s shield, and defied God, in order to escape the wrath of feeble man. Many through fear of worldly loss have brought great guilt into their consciences; some through fear of ridicule and laughter have not had the boldness to follow the right, and so have gone astray and been ruined. Yea, and where fear does not work utter destruction it is capable of doing much damage to the spirit. Fear has paralyzed the arm of the most gigantic Christian, stopped him in his race, and impeded him in his labors. Faith can do anything, but fear, sinful fear, can do just nothing at all, except prevent faith from performing its labors.

Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone. – Exodus 34:29.

I charge you, be clothed with humility, or you will yet be a wandering star, for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever. Let Christ increase, let man decrease. Remember, “Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone.” Looking at our own shining face is the bane of the spiritual life, and of the ministry. Oh for closest communion with God, till soul and body, head and heart, shine with divine brilliancy! But oh for a holy ignorance of their shining!

Daily Prayer & Praise 8/22/2022

Prayer for Monday 8-22-2022

Lord our God, as the deer pants for refreshing water, so our souls long for You, Oh God. Our souls thirst for You, for the living God. We stand in Your presence and pour out our hearts to You, our Heavenly Father. We bring before You everything that is painful to us, all our suffering and needs. We also bring You all our hopes and the many proofs You have given us that our lives need not go to ruin but can be directed to greater things. May the light of Your Comforting Spirit shine on us today and always. In the name of Christ Jesus, we humbly ask.

Amen.

Thoughtfulness On The Elevated Train

A young man who rode the elevated train to work regularly noticed that in one place where the train moved slowly, he could see into a room where an elderly woman was apparently convalescing. For several weeks he had observed her there, so one day he learned the woman’s name and sent her a get-well card, signing it, “Just a young man who rides the elevated train.”

A week later as he rode the train homeward through the dusk he noted that the bed was empty and a sign, illuminated by a table lamp, was hanging on the window. It read, “Bless you.”

But encourage one another every day, as long as it is still called “today.” – Hebrews 3:13 (NASB)

I Still Want Them! – A.W. Tozer

thought of day header

For Monday August 22, 2022:

I STILL WANT THEM!

Mark 16:19 (NKJV)
So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven,
and sat down at the right hand of God.

Is this the final end? Is this all there is?

No, no! This is our answer to everyone in the entire human race: We have wonderful news for you! It is the good news that the God who created us did not give us up. He did not say to the angels, “Write them off and blot them from My memory.”

Rather, He said, “Oh, I still want them! I still want them to be a mirror in which I can look and see My glory. I still want to be admired by My people. I still want My people to enjoy Me and have Me forever.”

So God sent His only begotten Son through the miracle of the Incarnation.

The bells in heaven rang out because lost man had now been redeemed. The way of pardon and forgiveness had been opened for sinners.

On the third day, Jesus arose from the dead. Since then He has been at God’s right hand. God has been busy redeeming people back to Himself, back to the original purpose of their being mirrors of His glory.

For Monday August 22, 2022:

“So be ready in the morning, and . . . present yourself to Me.” – Exodus 34:2.

The morning is the time fixed for my meeting the Lord. What meaning there is in the time as well as in the place! This very word morning is as a cluster of rich grapes. Let me crush them and drink the sacred wine. In the morning—then God means me to be at my best in strength and hope; I have not to climb in my weakness; in the night I have buried yesterday’s fatigue, and in the morning I take a new lease of energy. Give God thy strength—all thy strength; He asks only what He first gave. In the morning—then He may mean to keep me long that He may make me rich! In the morning—then it is no endless road He bids me climb, else how could I reach it ere the sun be set? Sweet morning! There is hope in its music.

Blessed is the day whose morning is sanctified. Successful is the day whose first victory was won by prayer. Holy is the day whose dawn finds thee on the top of the mount! Health is established in the morning. Wealth is won in the morning. The light is brightest in the morning. “Wake psaltery and harp, I myself will awake early.”

Francis of Assisi, Prayer for Sunday 8-21-2022

Almighty, eternal, just, and merciful God, give to us wretches to do for you what we know you to will, and to will always that which is pleasing to you; so that inwardly purified, inwardly illumined and kindled by the flame of the Holy Ghost, we may be able to follow in the footsteps of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and by your grace alone come to you the Most High, who in perfect Trinity and simple Unity lives and reigns and glories, God Almighty forever and ever.

Amen.

Centuries of Meditations – First Century 11-12

devotionals header

Thomas Traherne ( 1637 – September 27, 1674) was an English poet, Anglican cleric, theologian, and religious writer. Traherne’s writings frequently explore the glory of creation and what he saw as his intimate relationship with God. His writing conveys an ardent, almost childlike love of God, and is compared to similar themes in the works of later poets William Blake, Walt Whitman, and Gerard Manley Hopkins. His love for the natural world is frequently expressed in his works.

The work for which Traherne is best known today is the Centuries of Meditations, a collection of short paragraphs in which he reflects on Christian life and ministry, philosophy, happiness, desire and childhood. This was first published in 1908 after having been rediscovered in manuscript ten years earlier. Before its rediscovery this manuscript was said to have been lost for almost two hundred years and is now considered a much loved devotional.

THE FIRST CENTURY

11

Love is deeper than at first it can be thought. It never ceaseth but in endless things. It ever multiplies. Its benefits and its designs are always infinite. Were you not Holy, Divine, and Blessed in enjoying the World, I should not care so much to bestow it. But now in this you accomplish the end of your creation, and serve God best, and please Him most: I rejoice in giving it. For to enable you to please GOD, is the highest service a man can do you. It is to make you pleasing to the King of Heaven, that you may be the Darling of His bosom.

12

Can you be Holy without accomplishing the end for which you are created? Can you be Divine unless you be Holy? Can you accomplish the end for which you were created, unless you be Righteous? Can you then be Righteous, unless you be just in rendering to Things their due esteem? All things were made to be yours, and you were made to prize them according to their value: which is your office and duty, the end for which you were created, and the means whereby you enjoy. The end for which you were created, is that by prizing all that God hath done, you may enjoy yourself and Him in Blessedness.

Only He Knows

So they appointed taskmasters over them to afflict them with hard labor. And they built for Pharaoh storage cities, Pithom and Raamses. But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread out, so that they were in dread of the sons of Israel. The Egyptians compelled the sons of Israel to labor rigorously; and they made their lives bitter with hard labor in mortar and bricks and at all kinds of labor in the field, all their labors which they rigorously imposed on them. – Exodus 1:11-14.

At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “ELOI, ELOI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?” which is translated, “MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?” – Mark 15:34.

Experience – Sets You Apart

In December, 1960, Fidel Castro proscribed religion as a counter-revolutionary dogma no longer tolerated in Cuba. Twenty-three-year-old Armando Valladares couldn’t believe the decree. On Christmas Day he went as usual to pray in a nearby church. Three days later the government arrested him for “offenses against state authorities.” Thus began a twenty-two year horror, while he endured the shocking cruelties and tortures of Castro’s prison system.

Valladares survived the nightmare through his faith in God and his love for a girl who befriended him while in prison. The chastisements inflicted to break him deepened him instead. Poetry and paintings that anti-Castro accomplices smuggled from the prison revealed an unconquered soul within a beleaguered body. Finally, after intensive lobbying in world capitals for Valladares’ freedom, the Cuban government released him.

The personal affliction of that Cuban hero sets him apart from us. Only he knows what it cost him. Likewise, no one ever can ever understand our Lord’s ordeal. Only he assumed the burden of a fallen race, whose swollen egotism had inflicted horrendous plagues on itself. Only he accepted the penalty for those iniquities, as he absorbed God’s belligerence towards sin. The sufferings of Jesus place him in a category all alone. He endured more than anyone in all of history. No one else has any idea!

A Supernatural Book – John Linton – 2

great sermons header

gs john linton John Linton (1888 – 1965) John Linton is not normally listed among the elite of the evangelists in this century: Moody, Sunday, Bob Jones, Sr., Appelman, John Rice. But he was not some lesser light—God mightily moved through his ministry. He left a trail of converts to Christ as well as revived, restored, rejoicing churches.

His gospel soundness, his compelling delivery, his Scotch brogue and his devotion to our Lord made him widely acceptable. You cannot hear the inimitable Scotch brogue in his sermon, but you can enjoy its sweet and powerful message.

He died at age 77 in the pulpit while conducting evangelistic services.

The Bible – A Supernatural Book – Who Wrote The Bible?

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God . . . – 2 Timothy 3:16.

The greatest question confronting mortal man is, “Who wrote the Bible?” Did the God of Heaven and earth reveal His mind to men and, through the Holy Spirit, enable them to write as He directed? Or was the Bible written by men who merely imagined or vainly pretended that God inspired them?

The Bible writers claimed that God inspired them.

David said, “The Spirit of the LORD spake by me, and his word was in my tongue” (2 Samuel 23:2).

Paul said, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God” (2 Timothy 3:16).

Peter said, “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost” (2 Peter 1:21).

Question: Were they inspired as they claim? Is the Bible a reliable and authoritative record of what God directed men to write? Or is it the literary production of a long succession, over sixteen centuries, of fools, of imposters, of deceivers?

We cannot postpone settlement of this question until we die. If the Bible is true, that will be too late to heed its warnings.

This Bible speaks of a Heaven to be gained and a Hell to avoid. It presents a way of life and how to live it; an eternal salvation and the one way to receive it. Can any sensible person facing this question wisely postpone the answer?

Will the engineer of that express train going sixty miles an hour down the track look out of his cab and think, It’s foggy tonight. I can’t tell whether that signal is for us or against us, but I will keep right on. Will he? If he does, likely he will crash that train and send two hundred souls, his own among them, into eternity.

You and I are dashing along the track of life at the rate of sixty heartbeats a minute. The air is misty with unbelief. Is the Bible God’s Word or not?

Better stop the train a moment and find out about those signals. Better find out before you sleep tonight whether this Book that speaks of God, of Christ, of Heaven, of Hell, is true. Take no rest, I beseech you, and give God none, till you have discovered the authorship of the Bible and given your response to its claims.

The Lesson Book

thought of day header

For Sunday August 21, 2022

THE LESSON BOOK

1 Samuel 3:13 (NKJV)
For I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knows,
because his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them.

A boy stole a lesson book and took it home to his mother, who did not punish him, but encouraged the act. A little while later he stole a cloak and brought it to her, and again she praised him. As the boy grew into a man, he continued to steal things of greater value until one day, he was caught in the act and led away to a public execution. Just before his sentence was to be carried out, he noticed his mother in the crowd and shouted angrily to her, “Ah, if you had beaten me when I first stole and brought you that lesson book, I should not have come to this, nor have been led to a disgraceful death!”

Studies have shown that babies can thrive without sight, hearing, or smell but can die from lack of affection. In the same way, children can live without new toys, better clothes, and trips to Disneyland, but they will fail to thrive without boundaries.

Our Father in heaven gives us boundaries to live by because He knows what is best for us and He deeply loves us. As parents, let us follow His example and show our children love by giving them what they need: boundaries.

It is dangerous to confuse children with angels.

Even If An Angel Speaks

prophetic words header wp

“Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches.” – Revelation 2:29 (NLT).

But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. – Galatians 1:8.

Paul is applying a spiritual principle concerning the Word of God and that the Church (at that time the Galatians, today all of us) must evaluate the source of the teaching they had (we have) received. Ultimately the human source does not matter, nor would it matter even if the source were an “angelic” one. Satan can disguise himself as “an angel of light,” as can his ministers (2 Corinthians 11:14-15). So the Church must learn to evaluate their teachers, and they must learn that any attempt to alter the true Gospel and thus the whole Word of God is culpable and that any who go about teaching another teaching than what the Bible says will be condemned. The Bible tells us all we need to know to have faith in Christ Jesus and His Holy Spirit AND to have an intimate relationship with God, our Heavenly Father. We get to KNOW the Father, not through man or angels, but through the Holy Spirit of Christ. Something to remember and ponder when you hear talk of angels rather than the Holy Spirit.

Now what, you may ask, prompted this? The “prophets,” as I have said plenty of times before are coming out of the woodwork! Oh don’t get me wrong, I’ll say it again, I believe in the ministry gift of the Prophet, though as such I’m not much into titles. You have probably read that I believe a person, concerning ministry gifts, is what they do, not what they call themselves.

However, a modern-day Prophet, first and foremost exhorts, preaches (not necessarily teaches) the Word of God with authority; the Word of God that has already been given to us in the Bible. Today, however, we have so many that would rather give you fortune-telling predictions. All will be well, evil will be vanquished, you have nothing to fear (that part is true IF you are a born-again Christian), you will be prosperous and the troubles you see in your Nation (any Nation) will soon disappear as God blesses you once again and so on and so forth.

Again, HOWEVER, those “predictions” do not take into consideration the prophesies already given in the Word of God, and they do not take into consideration the plans that God has already shared with His children in the Word about things that MUST come about yet. No, no, no, those that are preaching judgment are just fear-mongering and God does not spread fear, but peace and love, blah, blah, blah.

pw fear mongering

Yes, I know, rather rude and there is a lot of people who swallow that hogwash! The prophet Amos wrote concerning God’s true servants, “If a trumpet is blown in a city, will not the people be afraid? If there is calamity in a city, will not the LORD have done it? Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets. A lion has roared! Who will not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken! Who can but prophesy?” – Amos 3:6-8. (Bold emphasis added).

I know what you’re thinking; see, the Lord does show events to His prophets. Of course He does and I’m not denying that, but what is Amos saying in that context? If a trumpet sounds, people will fear not knowing what to expect! If catastrophe strikes, it must be the Lord! A lion is roaming the streets! Fear, fear, fear! But Amos through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit wrote it the way he did for a reason.

Don’t be afraid because God always reveals through His prophets what He is about to do. Hear a trumpet, a clamor? Don’t fear because God already knows about it. Catastrophe? Don’t fear especially if God says He IS in it, for He gives His anointed ones, warning so they won’t be afraid. You aren’t afraid of what isn’t a surprise, so God doesn’t surprise His loved ones! God does NOT leave His people in the dark. BUT, He also let’s them know when judgment is coming upon the evil and the wicked and especially when it is a Nation, any Nation that outright rejects Him and then goes about sinning abominably. He is unbelievably patient, and the Bible calls it longsuffering, but His longsuffering and patience is NOT eternal in the face of outright rebellion and sin.

God warns His chosen, His anointed, those surrendered to Him when judgment around them is coming and He does it because nothing will stop it, but He doesn’t want His children to be afraid and fearful. Like in the days of Moses and Pharoah, God WILL use that judgment to demonstrate to ALL nations around the world that He and He alone is God almighty! (see Exodus chapters 7-12).

Yet, for some reason, we have those that call themselves God’s prophets, ignoring the warning signs about the judgments to come. It reminds me of several instances where the very same thing has been recorded:

This is what the LORD Almighty says:

“Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you; they fill you with false hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD.  . . . I have heard what the prophets say who prophesy lies in my name. They say, ‘I had a dream! I had a dream!’ How long will this continue in the hearts of these lying prophets, who prophesy the delusions of their own minds? . . . Let the prophet who has a dream recount the dream, but let the one who has my word speak it faithfully.”

“Therefore,” declares the LORD, “I am against the prophets who steal from one another words supposedly from me. Yes,” declares the LORD, “I am against the prophets who wag their own tongues and yet declare, ‘The LORD declares.’ Indeed, I am against those who prophesy false dreams,” declares the LORD. “They tell them and lead my people astray with their reckless lies, yet I did not send or appoint them. They do not benefit these people in the least,” declares the LORD. (NIV) Please read all of Jeremiah 23:20-32 for context.

pw God speaks

They say the evil will get their due but they go on to state that the Nation itself (made up of those evil people, by the way) will rejoice in peace and prosperity once again! God’s judgment on the Nation will not be yet, for we will have a reprieve before the real judgment comes.

I ask this simple question; are they trusting in a righteous and holy God or in the Nation they live in, to care for them? The answer seems to be simple enough by what they say. I will tell anyone this; if you are a Christian, a true disciple of Jesus Christ, born-again and filled and sealed with the Holy Spirit of Christ, the ONLY Kingdom you are now a citizen of, is God’s Heavenly Kingdom. We are foreigners on this earth no matter WHAT Nation we belong too and our help, our needs, everything comes from our Father in His Heavenly Kingdom!

Another example from the Word of God; Jesus had just miraculously fed 4,000 men, which didn’t include the women and children in the count. Then Matthew writes:

Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven. He answered and said to them, “When it is evening you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red’; and in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times. A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” – Matthew 16:1-4.

As a child of God, a co-heir with Christ Jesus, why do I need a sign or the future told to me OTHER than to know our Father’s plans so we can be vigilant and aware. We can warn those in the world as Noah did before the flood, but we have already been given God’s plan in advance, why, oh why, are we looking for the minute details in the day to day journey? Is it because we DO fear and thus lack faith? The Word tells us we can’t please our Heavenly Father without faith (Hebrews 11:6). Faith, true faith is believing in God’s Word and His plan and not knowing what might happen in the next moment. This is the reason Jesus was so upset with the Pharisees. They HAD God’s Words yet wanted something SENSATIONAL from the Son of God just to appease their senses.

pw seeking signs

Here’s the thing; the office of the Prophet was always a very honored and mysterious thing and many in the Old Testament found honor and esteem; as long as they continued to prophesy good things. Those like the Prophet writers of the Bible, those who spoke what God told them to say unembellished and straightforward, were despised, hated and often times in danger for their lives because they spoke God’s truth.

Today, we have the same thing and today, man is especially enamored with titles and labels. The Apostle Paul wrote this to his protégé Timothy:

For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. – 2 Timothy 4:3-4.

Sadly, human nature, without the Holy Spirit’s intervention, just does NOT change and what once was in the hearts of unrepentant men is in the hearts of the same today. We have the Word of God to teach, guide and direct and we have the Holy Spirit who leads us into all truth in line with the Word of God and yet, man, even so-called “good” men, want what they want and want to give you some NEW revelation they say is from God. To what end, I ask? They WILL amass teachers who will tell them what they want to hear and woe to the man who dares point out to them what God is truly trying to say to the people. But, God, our Creator, and to some, Heavenly Father, only wants what is BEST for mankind. We either accept it, or we accept the lies and deception so many are willing to spread for whatever motive is deep within their hearts.

I trust the Word of God. I trust the Holy Spirit and His direction. God has told us what we need to know to allow us to walk by faith and thus please Him, day by day. I don’t need the minutia of what will happen tomorrow or the next day or next week. Not because I’m not interested mind you, but because I KNOW, I don’t just believe, that MY GOD is in total control and has tomorrow (and thus His children) in His powerful, yet loving hands!

My hope is that you also KNOW this to be true as well and if you don’t as of yet, the Holy Spirit is near, just waiting for you to call out and ask Him for wisdom! Trust God, trust His Word, walk in faith and know that our Heavenly Father is in control and in the process know that you are thus pleasing Him because of your faith.
