Prayer For Wisdom and Understanding

*Pastor’s Note: Feel free to pray this prayer individually and personally. The Lord has promised that if we ask for wisdom, He will give it to us generously and without criticizing us. He truly loves us as His children that much!

Heavenly Father, thank You always for Your guidance and for hearing and answering.

pp asking for wisdomI long to be in Your Holy presence, Oh Lord. Sit right beside me as I learn. Bring understanding to my mind as Your teachings are revealed to me. Grant me the understanding and deeper knowledge of You and Your word. As I open my Bible to read the scriptures give me wisdom and discernment. Help me to understand You better as Lord and Master, and the way in which You lived Your life through Jesus Christ, so that I can follow in Your precious footsteps.

I can only focus on the present and the past, but only You know the future. So plan my path for me and help me to see clearly and to make the best decision for not only myself but for family and everyone around me that I have some influence on.

Bless me with divine knowledge so that I could continue to help others. Help me to learn how to be more understanding, kind, patient and compassionate towards my brothers and sisters just as You were when You walked the earth and came to save us.

Lord, I’m here today with open hands and an open heart, ready to depend on You to help me through the day and all it will bring my way. Help me be like so many of Your obedient Prophets, help me come to You for guidance, strength, provision and protection. As I face tough choices and hard situations, help me remember that I am loved by You, help me remember that I am Your child and Your representative to the world around me. Help me live today in a way that brings honor to Your Holy Name.

Lord, thank You for the people You have divinely placed in my life who speak holy truth, love and words of wisdom. Give me a heart of discernment to know when You are using someone to speak instruction into my heart and my circumstances, and give me the strength and courage to follow through with that advice, even when it’s hard. Fill me with peace in knowing that even if I take a wrong turn, Your purpose will prevail.

Heavenly Father, just as Your servant Solomon asked for wisdom and understanding, Lord so do I sincerely long for that gift from You. Help me to be Your vessel used by You in the service of others. In this I sincerely and humbly ask, in the Precious, and Holy Name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer. Amen and AMEN!

Wise Ears

*Pastor’s Note: On keeping with today’s theme of wisdom and understanding, I offer you this poetry from Sister Deborah Ann Belka from her website, CHRISTian Poetry – By Deborah Ann. It goes right along with God’s provision and compassion towards His children and the fact that He wants only the best for His children. Please visit her site and be blessed, and remember to pray for her ministry (service) as part of the Body of Christ.

wise ears - dab

Wise ears listen,
they hear, they heed
they know God’s Word
each day they need.

Wise ears garner,
they reap, they gather
the wisdom given
by their Father.

Wise ears pick up,
they find, they receive
in Godly wisdom
they trust and believe.

Wise ears surface,
they rise up, they emerge
to understanding
they have an urgent urge.

Wise ears listen,
they’re perked and alert
from the truth . . .
they don’t ever divert!

Proverbs 1:5

A wise man will hear,
and will increase learning;
and a man of understanding
shall attain unto wise counsels:

Why, Oh Why? – 2

*Pastor’s Note: This is a continuation of the lesson we started on November 11th, twenty years and two months after the tragic events of what has become known as the 9/11 attacks. The whole point is to look at where we have come from then and where we are now and answer the often asked question as to why a loving God would or could allow what happened then and why allow what is happening all around us even now.

We continue to answer that question.

In the last lesson we did talk a lot about prophecy and prophetic words and the danger in relying upon them WITHOUT a firm and solid foundation which can be and is found in the written Word of God, the Bible.

We left off with the thought of how the natural, unredeemed soul could not ever comprehend the Nature and Character of God Almighty and thus will always grasp at that question why. However, if you are a born-again, believing, Christ-following Christian, there are answers that you can give to those who are still asking the “why” question.

Let’s begin by laying some familiar foundation:

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” – Genesis 1:1.

“Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” – Genesis 1:26-27.

“Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.” – Genesis 1:31.

pd created for a purpose

Now these verses show us, who follow after Him that He created mankind with a purpose. Whether you believe it or not, it is clear God, the Creator had a plan. Now, to one of my favorite books, or letters, in the Bible:

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” – 1 John 4:7-8.

The Apostle John is clearly speaking to followers of Christ Jesus, and here he is reminding us that God is not just a God of love, He IS love! Love is not just a character trait or part of His nature, it is wholly what He IS. He is the great I AM, and the great I AM is LOVE!

Thus, it stands to reason that if God created us in His likeness and image, He created us to be LIKE Him, to be able to BE love, at least in His likeness. He IS love, He created us in His image and likeness, thus we are created to be love. That isn’t a far leap of logic to come to that conclusion.

We were meant to love Him AND others, one another, and to be loved by Him. Just as parents choose to conceive children to show forth their love, so the Father created us to demonstrate His love. If any of you are parents with children, you know that there was something inside of you that yearned to break forth, and you realized the depth of what it was when your first child was born. Here was someone before you that you could nurture and cherish and lavish all your love unto. The child never asked to come into the world, you chose its future, fueled by the love that you needed to express. Remember, this is coming from people who are far from perfect in love! Remember also though, we were made in the “image” of God. If God is love, we were made to be love, as well, along with many other Godly characteristics. Think about it, if you haven’t already.

Okay, here’s the crux of the whole thing; what went so wrong? The answer in a nutshell is, hold on –

CHOICE!

pd ability to freely choose

That’s right, your ability to choose, which is another Godly characteristic. God in His perfect wisdom, created us in His likeness, with some of His characteristic nature, not just with the ability to love, but since we are predominately spiritual creatures, love was in our nature, in our DNA, as it were, and along with that came choice, the freedom and ability to choose. Think about it before rushing on. A created being cannot have real, true love, without also having the ability to choose to love.

Unlike how the world system has relegated love, it is not nor ever was a FEELING. Yes there ARE emotions when love is demonstrated, another characteristic of our Creator, but that is not what love IS. Love is action. It cannot be real love unless it is something you do for others and do unselfishly. Anything else is motivated and controlled by feelings and NOT the spiritual likeness of God that is within us.

We may not be able to choose to FEEL a certain way, but we most definitely have the ability and power to ACT certain ways. Actions are all within our scope of abilities. That is why actual LOVE is based not on how you feel which you can’t always control, but upon your actions which are always within your ability to control. You have the ability and the power to choose to act in a loving, unselfish way, or you can choose to act in a selfish, evil and wicked way. God GAVE you that ability to choose. The power to act is yours, but the power to act in the right way, is not always prevalent OR strong in mankind as we see around us.

Here’s another point to ponder. Since love is an action, it is demonstrated and thus easily seen. You can talk “love” all you want, but for instance, a young child will pick up very quickly what they SEE before understanding fully what they hear. In other words, that old cliché that “actions speak louder than words,” is all so very true and it is evident in how our children learn depending on how intent they are in watching us and our examples! They learn very early on they have a choice in what they can do. I have a great-grandson that’s a little bit over a year old now and I can see it in him! It brings back memories of my two sons and my grandchildren. They learn very quickly by what they see.

Without our ability to choose what we WILL do moving forward in life, we would be no more than mere robots, programmed to do the bidding of someone or something else. It is that very freedom, and it is a liberty in truth, that allows us to love as God, our Creator does, or to do whatever it is that we want to do regardless of the consequences.

pd puppets

Now don’t imagine for one moment that this was a mistake on God’s part. No way, no how. But here’s where the natural man, with no discerning spiritual understanding stumbles and often falls. “If only God would prevent bad things from happening!” How would He do that without taking away mankind’s ability to choose which direction he will go? How then would mankind even be able to choose a direction that demonstrates actual love and compassion for others? Taking away a person’s ability to choose, leaves absolutely no room to love as God loves. It could never be unselfish and thus it could never truly be love.

You HAVE to remember God’s nature and characteristics. He IS All-Knowing, Omniscient. He truly knows all. There is nothing that can or ever will take Him by surprise. Thus when He created us, He truly KNEW us before the foundations of the world! (Jeremiah 1:5, Ephesians 1:4). He knew ahead of time who would choose Him over themselves and who they are who will reject Him. That doesn’t change His ability to love His creation despite what they choose and that is why love is what it is and that is why God IS love! Love cannot be separated from the very being of God for it is a part of Who He Is!

Now it may seem I’ve strayed from the point of the lesson but in truth I haven’t. From the first time that man and woman chose to follow their own path rather than God’s perfect path for them, man has had to deal with his own consequences. Man chose his own path and it all started with a question, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” – Genesis 3:1.

It is not as if this question is even harmful in and of itself for God did indeed say it. But it turned the woman’s heart into questioning God’s motivations; in essence questioning His love for them. It planted DOUBT within their minds! They were given everything, they were protected, cared for, they even WALKED daily with the Almighty, yet they, without asking Him, questioned His motivations and thus doubted. As an aside, can you see why doubt is so dangerous to mankind and faith is not just so powerful, but has the power to PLEASE our Creator?!

And that dear readers, has been mankind’s curse ever since! When we don’t have a relationship with Him as Father; when we start to assume or surmise something without going directly to Him or when we cease in trusting His motivations and start to DOUBT, then it is easy to ask the question “Why would or how could, a loving God allow something like this, or anything else bad, to happen?”

pd doubt - fear

Those questions are asked without any understanding of the Father’s Nature or Character, because there is no relationship with Him. Here’s what the Apostle Paul wrote; “But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” – 1 Corinthians 2:14. It’s been said there are “no foolish questions,” but I’m here to tell you that only applies if you have no knowledge. It’s not a shame or a crime to be ignorant of something. Ignorance is simply a lack of knowledge or education in a certain area. Stupidity or more aptly, foolishness is not based on lack of knowledge, but rather on rejecting knowledge and/or truth.

We truly live at a time in history when all of the knowledge acquired over the past is literally at our fingertips. Yet the truth is often rejected for blatant foolishness and mankind in general is rejecting outright, the lessons we have or should have learned from the past! Choice! It comes down to our ability and willingness to choose. We HAVE the ability to choose, now it’s all about our willingness to choose wisely.

God, as our Creator AND as our Heavenly Father will not force us to choose wisely. He will make suggestions and show those who are truly searching the right path to take, but He will NOT force it upon anyone. However, understand this if you understand nothing else at all; because He will HONOR your choice and choices, you WILL face what ever consequences are resultant form those choices, both now in the present and into the future. THAT is how much He truly loves His creation! He will NOT stop loving you depending upon your choices. You can rest assured that even if you reject Him, His love for you is steadfast, but understand this about His love; if you reject Him, He will NOT force His love on you, but will honor your choice to reject Him even into eternity. That is a concept of love that is very rarely taught and very hard to understand unless you put some serious thought into it.

Even if you choose utter outer darkness, no light, no ability to sense even the slightest hint of love or anything that stems from it, He will honor your choice and though He will continue to love you as His creation, He will respect your choice and withdraw His presence from you in eternity. Again, the choice is and was always yours!

pd days of noah

We live in a world that will only get worse. In regards to God’s love, He has given mankind ample warning and He has shown us it is because of human nature and mankind’s ability to choose his own direction. God in His ability to know all, has told us ahead of time what mankind’s general choices will be and because of His love, will allow mankind to follow the course of his own choosing rather than the course of God’s choosing. BUT, those that DO choose to accept His love and His ways will be spared from the final wrath that He has forewarned as a way of justice. You might ask “how does that line up with a loving God.”

Simple, you can’t have love, true unselfish, Godly love without another characteristic of God’s nature, justice. Otherwise, He would be a partial God, a God of discrimination and He is not. That is why He made a way out for mankind in the Person of His Son, Christ Jesus. Jesus already paid the debt of ALL sin, past, present and future. But you have to accept that offering. If you reject it, again, God will honor that and leave you to the consequences, whereas those who have accepted the offer will be spared from the consequences because of their debt having been paid.

Believe it or not, the reason bad things happen, is because of God’s love. His love allows man their freedom to choose their own direction and because of that it is obvious in the world around us just what those choices are. Now those who have accepted God and His will for their individual lives, grow in strength and the ability to love because God, in His love, will take every bad, good and even indifferent thing in our lives and turn it around for our good and His glory. A God of love can and does do that!

If you have surrendered your will, by choice, to the Father’s will for your life, no matter what goes on around us or happens to us, we have this assurance:

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” – Romans 8:28.

Do I dare say it in ending? I will; NOW THAT’S LOVE!!

pd God's love

The Goose Story – Act Like a Goose

anecdotal stories
*Pastor’s Note: Here’s another one from years ago that I have always loved! The author, however is unknown. Enjoy and be blessed!

Just a few observations and some life lessons to accompany them!

Observation #1: As each goose flutters its wings, it creates an updraft for the bird following it in the V-formation of migration. By flying in this V-formation, the geese are able to migrate 72% further than if each bird flew unaccompanied.

Life’s Lesson #1: People who share a common vision and sense of common direction can get further and faster by supporting one another.

Observation #2: When the lead goose tires, it peels off the point position and rotates back into the V-formation. Another goose then steps up and takes its turn fighting in the wind from the point position.

Life’s Lesson #2: It pays to take turns. By recognizing the gifts of other members, everyone in a group or organization can grow. Everyone is given an ability or gift that benefits the whole Body.

Observation #3: The lead goose (on the point) never honks. The geese behind the leader continue to honk what appears to be praise and encouragement to the lead goose.

Life’s Lesson #3: The power of praise and recognition is critical to success as people find their gifts and ministries and learn to use them in a group or organization. Remember to esteem others above ourselves.

as geese in formation

Observation #4: Sometimes two or three geese break away from the formation in order to look for a better wind current or a more creative and better way to fly.

Life’s Lesson #4: An effective group or organization constantly try new ways of doing, yet within the established vision. Successful groups or organizations often forget wrongs quickly and learn at a steady pace. In today’s environment, we need to remember, we are all members of one Body and all with varying and necessary gifts, ministry AND spiritual.

Observation #5: When a goose gets sick or wounded and has to go down to land, two other geese fall out of the formation and go with it to support and protect it. They stay with it until it dies – or is able to return to the formation. Then the geese try to catch up with their own flock or another formation of geese.

Life’s Lesson #5: When life gets tough, people need to support one another. If we had the sense of a goose, we would stand by each other like that and not abandon another that is weak or hurting.

Geese do not abandon one another unless and until they either reach their goal, or the weak or hurting geese can’t go on any longer due to death. They seem to know that life DOES continue and until death, we all have a work to do to fulfill our goal.

Philippians 3:13-14, “Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

Christ’s Call to Courage – G. Campbell Morgan

g campbell morgan
George Campbell Morgan (December 9, 1863 – May 16, 1945) had the titles of Reverend and Doctor and was a Doctor of Divinity (D.D.) Also He was a British evangelist, preacher, a leading Bible teacher, and a prolific author writing many works in his lifetime. This includes the 10-volume set of sermons, “The Westminster Pulpit,” his sermons that were published independently as booklets and pamphlets, his posthumous works, as well as various other works. He wrote commentaries on the entire Bible, and on many more devotional topics related to the Christian life and ministry.

G. Campbell Morgan preached his first sermon at age 13. He was the pastor of Westminster Chapel in London from 1904 to 1919, pausing for 14 years to teach at Biola in Los Angeles, and returning to the Chapel from 1933 to 1943 when he handed over the pastorate to the renowned Martyn Lloyd-Jones, after having shared it with him and mentored him for some years previous. From 1911-1914 he was the president of Cheshunt College, Cambridge.

An Excerpt:

“Son, be of good cheer; thy sins are forgiven.” Matthew 9:2
“Daughter, be of good cheer; thy faith hath made thee whole.” Matthew 9:22
“Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.” Matthew 14:27
“Be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
“Be of good cheer; for as thou hast testified concerning Me at Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.” Acts 23:11

Five familiar pictures of the New Testament are recalled by the reading of these words.

The first is that of a man sick of the palsy, carried by his friends into the presence of Jesus; physically trembling and troubled in heart by the consciousness of sin.

The second is that of a woman struggling to reach Him through the movement and pressure of a jostling crowd, troubled by all the suffering of twelve years, twelve years of physical pain, of divorce, of ostracism, of excommunication.

The third is that of a company of disciples in the midst of difficulties which had arisen in the path of duty. The Master had bid them set the prow of their vessel toward the farther shore, and the wind was contrary, and the waves were boisterous. The picture is that of these men suddenly confronted by a new and nameless terror, a specter of the night, moving over the waters toward them.

The fourth is that of a company of disciples face to face with three facts: first, the fact of their Lord’s approaching departure by some way they could not understand, and to some borne about which they knew nothing; second, the fact of the antagonism of the world to Him and to His ideals, and consequently to them also, if in His absence they remained loyal to Him; and, third, the fact of their own appalling weakness. Or briefly, it is a picture of a company of men troubled by the fear of the future.

The last picture is that of a servant of God in prison, rescued from the mob yesterday, threatened by a new conspiracy tomorrow, troubled by the force of circumstances which hindered the progress of his service.

g campbell morgan portraitThe central fact in these pictures is not that of the troubled souls. The central fact is that of Christ, and of what He said to these people. To the man sick of the palsy He said, “Be of good cheer, child.” To the woman broken, bruised, weary, emaciated, and forlorn, He said, “Be of good cheer, daughter.” To the disciples in the midst of the storm, terrified by the approach of the phantom, and to the disciples yet more afraid of the future without Him, He said, “Be ye of good cheer.” To the man in the prison, hindered in high and holy service, He said, “Be of good cheer.” In each case He challenged fear, and uttered a call to courage, and gave His reason for doing so.

These incidents illustrate and illuminate the whole realm of discipleship, and I bring them to you this morning in order, as I may be helped by the Spirit of God, to fasten your attention upon that challenge of Jesus. I bring them to you as a New Year’s greeting, not as my word to you, for that would be very worthless, but as the Master’s word to you. “Be of good cheer.”

First, then, the call of Jesus, “Be of good cheer.” Now I take up my New Testament, and I find that these are the only occasions on which we have any record of His using these expressions, and no one else is ever recorded to have used exactly the same expression in addressing men. The word is almost peculiar to Christ. It emerges in the writings of Paul in certain applications; but this personal, direct, immediate call was peculiarly that of the Lord Himself. It is therefore important that we should, with all simplicity, inquire what He really did say. In the Revised New Testament from which I read, you will notice that there is uniformity of translation, that on each occasion we have these words, “Be of good cheer.” In the Authorized the translation is, “Be of good cheer” in each case except one; in the record of His speech to the woman, the 1611 translators rendered Jesus’ words thus, “Be of good comfort.”

Now, without any question, there is a fault in this translation, “Be of good cheer.” There is something very bright about it, very hopeful about it; and before I am through I shall show you that I have robbed you of nothing by saying that it is not exactly what our Lord said. Indeed, so to translate it is to miss the deepest value of the word. “Be of good cheer” suggests the result rather than the cause. The actual word of which our Lord made use described the cause, and left us to discover the result. There is another word in the New Testament for cheerfulness. When Paul wrote, “The fruit of the Spirit is… joy,” the thought is that of cheerfulness. But that is not the word here. Cheerfulness will be the outcome of what Christ commanded, but He did not command men to be cheerful. He never dealt with the surface of things. He never told men to smile when they were in agony. He dealt with the underlying agony, and thus called men into such attitude of soul as made cheerfulness possible.

The word employed indicates courage rather than cheerfulness, and, moreover, courage subjectively as a feeling rather than objectively as an enterprise; “Be of good courage” rather than, Do a courageous thing. Our Lord did not say, Forget your trouble by doing something. That may help for the moment, but the agony surges back when the activity ceases. The word that our Lord addressed to the man, to the woman, to the disciples, to the imprisoned apostle, was a word suggestive of that strength of heart which is at once the inspiration of daring and the reason of cheerfulness. The call, then, is to freedom from fear, and to an absolute assurance of safety.

Passing from that attempt to consider the actual meaning of the Lord’s word, let us glance at these pictures once more, in order to discover what Christ meant in each case.

There is a conscience troubled by sin; to that man He said, Do not have any fear, be of good courage.

There is a woman’s heart trembling through long suffering, which has become destitution; to that woman He said, Have no fear; be full of courage; there is nothing to be afraid of.

Look carefully at those men on board the ship. What was their condition? Intelligence menaced by mystery. I wish I could bring you into real sympathy with those fishermen of blue Galilee. They were men accustomed to the storms that suddenly swept its waters, men who were not often baffled, even when the sea was tossed into fury. Their chief trouble that night was not that of the storm, but that of the specter moving across the waters. They did not know what it was. Do not, in your superior wisdom, say they ought not to have been frightened at ghosts. That is what you are frightened at this morning! What you are fearing you will find presently to be the Lord Himself! So do not be angry with these men. Try to sympathize with them. Their intelligence was menaced by mystery; and when He came to them, He said, Do not be afraid. There is nothing to be afraid of. Banish panic, establish peace, be of good courage.

Then look at the group of men in that upper room. They were men full of a spiritual aspiration, but threatened by opposition, not merely the opposition of men who were angry with Jesus, and about to crucify Him; but that most subtle and forceful opposition of worldliness in the true and New Testament sense of that word, those materialized ideals for which the enemies of Christ stood, and which had gained so strong a hold upon the heart of the multitudes. That little group of men in the upper room saw Him going. They had been able to believe while He was with them. They had been able, with Him, even though tremblingly, to believe in His philosophy when He said, “Be not afraid of them which kill the body and after that have no more that they can do.” But He was going. How were they to be true to that high spiritual ideal, with all the forces of the cosmos as men were interpreting it, against them. To them, thus filled with foreboding, He said, “Be of good courage,” there is nothing to fear. Do not be afraid.

And then we come to the picture of Paul, the man of high purpose, and unswerving devotion, who had said, “I must also see Rome,” knowing that Rome was the very center of the world, the strategic point from which to proclaim the Gospel and send the messengers of the King along all her highways through the nations. Everything appeared as though he were not going to reach Rome. He was in Jerusalem, and there he had been mobbed, and barely rescued yesterday; and conspirators were planning to murder him to-mor-row. Paul was not grieved by reason of his own imprisonment. He was troubled because he was an ambassador in bonds, and his high purpose was being hindered. It was night, when suddenly the Lord spoke to him; and said, “Be of good courage,” Paul, there is nothing to be afraid of, neither the mob of yesterday, nor the conspiracy of tomorrow; be of good courage.

g campbell morgan portrait 2I am talking out of my own heart. I am a fearful soul, and I am ashamed of the fact. I have been trying to find out how to be courageous. I have found out! God help me to be true to the revelation! It is to see Him! Looking off unto Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of faith! Consider Him Who endured such contradiction of sinners!

I am speaking to Christian men and women, to those who are familiar with Him in some sense. All our fear and all our panic result from a dimmed vision of the Lord, a dimmed consciousness of Christ. I believe that is the trouble with us all today, individually and in Church life, all these tremors, all these fears result from lack of the sense of His presence.

Another word, and I have done. Have you no fear in your heart at all? There are those who are quite without fear. Well, let them suffer me to ask a question. Why not? I believe that there are men and women who answer my inquiry by saying, Because we have seen Him; because we see Him now. I have no more to say to them. Such men and women have found the secret of peace.

But there are others who are not conscious of fear today. Let me press upon them the same question. Why not? I charge all such most earnestly to remember in these days, when there may seem in their case to be no cause for fear, no trembling, no panic, weakness, foolishness, that any reason for absence of fear, short of the vision and consciousness of Christ and confidence in Him, is false and your confidence is misplaced, and it may be that before this first Sabbath day of the year be gone to its last hour the crack of doom will come to you, out of the light will come the darkness, and from behind the mountains will rush innumerable foes to assault your soul. There is no refuge for the soul of man other than the Lord Christ.

But now, finally; trembling, terrified, troubled souls, I pray you look and listen! Look to your Lord, and with eyes fastened upon Him listen to His word, “Be of good courage.” That means, when He says it, that He puts Himself between thy soul and all the forces in hell and earth that may be against thee.

Why, Oh Why? – 1

*Pastor’s Note: Twenty years and two months ago to the date, one of the most tragic events in modern history struck the United States of America. It has become known as the attacks of 9/11. As so many still remember, it happened in 2001 when al-Qaeda terrorists took over four commercial planes and drove two of them into the Twin Towers in New York City and a third one, headed for and crashed into the side of the Pentagon building. The fourth, whose Washington D.C. target is still unknown was thwarted by the bravery of the passengers and crashed into a Pennsylvania field. As everyone remembers, both Twin Towers collapsed and a lot of damage was done to the Pentagon building. It truly was a day in modern American history that would not soon be forgotten.

This lesson is in part what I wrote those twenty years ago with updates concerning the state of our Nation today. It all stems from so many back then and still to this day asking the most obvious question; why would a loving and caring God allow something so evil to happen back then and why does He allow the blatant corruption and wickedness going on in our nation and the world today, only twenty years later.

People and many who should know better are still asking, Why, oh why?

If you have ever asked the question why, or have had a friend or loved one ask you how a loving God could allow something so horrific to happen, or how a supposedly compassionate God could continue to allow corruption and wickedness to take place so blatantly, then please take this message to heart, pray about it meditate on it and seek answers in the Scriptures of the Bible. Do whatever it takes so that you and those around you can and will understand that our God IS, beyond a doubt, has been and always will be a God of unfathomable love.

pd 9-11 tragedy

America did experience a grave tragedy on September 11, 2001 and we all continue to mourn for those souls that were lost and the relatives and friends left behind to grieve. In the wake of tragedies such as this, something that has been utterly foreign to America, it is only natural that we want to question why. And of all the questions I have heard back then and in the recent history of this country’s political climate, the question as to why or how a loving God could allow this to happen has been in the forefront.

Even talking two decades ago with other pastors whom I was associated with, the question as to why this could happen had been on the minds of many people, both non-Christian and Christian alike. I firmly remember that even some of our prominent television evangelists or leaders have asked the question as to why. To be honest with you, when I heard them then and hear them now ask that question it does come as somewhat of a surprise to me.

I also remember there was a lot of concern then as to whether this is punishment or judgment from God. Today in our nation, this is a constant question and commentary on events that have taken place over the last couple of years especially.

Back in 2001 I had heard so many so-called prophecies during the time surrounding that tragedy, BUT – only after the fact and not before. Today, the “prophets” are coming out of the woodwork, so to speak, and not all of them are relying on the Word of God to guide them as a true prophet is supposed to.

Now, I do not want to criticize the “prophecies” except in regard to what the Apostle John and even the Apostle Paul has told us; “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” – 1 John 4:1.

The Apostle Paul wrote extensively on this; “Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge.” – 1 Corinthians 14:29. Remember, this is right after the chapter reminding us to do everything motivated by godly love. But he also went on to say:

“Do not quench the Spirit; do not despise prophetic utterances. But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:19-22. (NASB)

pd false prophet today

Way too many people today, especially, love to take bits and pieces of Scripture to use as they see fit, disregarding the context with which it was written and meant. It’s not wrong to take a part of Scripture here and there AS LONG as you keep its meaning in context! For instance, it is easy to tell people to “not despise prophecy,” and totally forget that we are ALSO to TEST all things, holding fast to what is good,” as the New King James Version puts it.

If you are still young in the Lord or you lack understanding of the majority of Scriptures, you need to rely on those who are most like Jesus and His disciples and especially in their everyday walk with the Lord, and have them explain to you what those things, especially things dealing with prophecy, mean.

Now here’s the situation and I hope that you as a Christian are mature enough to understand this; God our Father, has given us by His Holy Spirit the ability to discern, which means to examine and scrutinize the prophecies that come forth so that we may not be deceived. But, and this is where so many fall for “so-called prophetic words,” even aside from the spiritual gifts that He DOES still bestow on us, He has given all of us, His mighty Word, not just for the knowledge contained in it, but also for the experience, insight and UNDERSTANDING that it opens up to us. The Bible is not just a text written with a set of instructions on how to behave, it is life itself, set down by example, it is the portal to the Father’s heart, and witness to the Living Word of Christ Jesus, and taken as a whole and not just as little pieces here and there, we get a glimpse into the Majesty and Awesomeness of the Fulness of Who God is, in ALL of His Glory!

We have to understand that the Word of God is the ONLY True foundation we have to rely on and everything God wants us to know, the past, the present and yes, even the future is written down for our instruction and understanding. If someone prophecies, and prophecy is not just prediction, but expounding the Word with authority and power, then those prophecies are already found in the Written Scripture!

In other words, God, does NOT use soothsayers and divination to deal with His people. In fact He WARNS us to stay away from them. He has already given us all the Revelation we need to succeed as His Children in His Word. When God tells us something about an upcoming event, through a Holy Spirit-filled prophet, the proof of His handiwork and plan within that upcoming event will be found in the Scriptures for the Bible tells us this: “Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.” – Amos 3:7. This is not just for Old Testament, Old Covenant Prophets, but for New Covenant Prophets anointed by the Holy Spirit’s gifting! But the truth and the confirmation can already be found through the discerning heart by looking within the written Word.

pd bible prophecies

I told someone the other day that we need to realize there is coming a time when we, the chosen children of God will NOT need the written Word any longer because we WILL be in fellowship AND co-heirs with the Living Word, Christ Jesus!

Now I’m going to end this first part with this thought:

The Bible reveals to us not JUST in words, but also as a living picture, when taken as a whole, the nature and character of the One who is not just our Creator, but our Loving Father! When we read His Word and allow the Holy Spirit to “lead us into ALL truth” we gain a perspective of the One who loves us as only the indwelling Spirit can reveal. Unregenerate man will never be able to see that quality of God as Father, only those whose spirits have been reborn, reawakened and made alive to the Spirit of the Father! Remember this; “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” – John 4:24.

In other words, the natural man has absolutely no way to understand the nature or character of God, let alone Who He IS!

We will continue next time by answering the lingering question as to WHY.

The Twenty Dollar Lesson

anecdotal stories

*Pastor’s Note: This is another one of those great anecdotal stories from the past that used to circulate by email before the social media craze hit. It is one I have saved for years. Enjoy and be blessed!

A well-known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20.00 bill. In the room of 200, he asked, “Who would like this $20 bill?” Hands started going up.

He said, “I am going to give this $20 to one of you, but first let me do this. He proceeded to crumple the $20 dollar bill up into a tight wrinkled ball. He then asked, “Who still wants it?” Still the hands were up in the air.

He then reached for the glass of water he had on the podium and dipped the crumpled bill into the water until it was thoroughly soaked. He pulled it out, wrung the water out of it as best he could and then asked again, “Who wants it now?” Still the hands shot up in the air.

Well, he replied, “What if I do this?” He then dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled, damp and dirty. “Now, who still wants it?” Still the hands went into the air, now with a few chuckles in the room.

as crumpled twenty dollars

“My friends, we have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what was done to the money, you still wanted it because no matter what happened to it, it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way in everyday life. At those times we often feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value. Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless to those who do love you and especially to the ONE Who created you. The worth of our lives doesn’t come from what we do or have done in this life or who we know, but, rather by who we ARE in the eyes of our Creator. To God and to those who love you, you ARE special and valuable – Don’t EVER forget it.”

–  Author Unknown

The LORD has appeared of old to me, saying: “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.” – Jeremiah 31:3.

“Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!” – 1 John 3:1.
