Goals – Necessary

anecdotal stories

Psalm 27:4, “One thing I have asked from the LORD, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD And to meditate in His temple.”

Galatians 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.”

In Pursuit of a Goal

Donald Thornton worked as a ditch digger, and his wife, Tass, worked as a domestic. But Donald had other plans for their five daughters: they would be doctors and escape the hardships he and Tass had experienced. The girls’ early discovery of music proved to be the means to accomplish these goals. They practiced to become excellent musicians and won a talent contest in the Harlem Apollo Theater. Donald wouldn’t hear of his daughters pursuing a musical career, however. Doctors he planned for them to be, and nothing else would suffice. He encouraged them to use their musical skills to earn money by playing weekends at eastern universities. Their concentrated study opened college doors to them, and every girl graduated – two became doctors, one a psychiatrist, another a dentist, and another a professor working on a doctorate. What intense energy flowed in that family to envision, pursue, and achieve the goal of a college education for each girl!

Sometimes, having a goal is the only way we can keep ourselves committed to a course of action. The goal develops resources, skill, and application. Having Christlikeness as our goal fills us with a fiery enthusiasm to study God’s Word, to pray, to witness, to serve, to overcome, to sing, to acquire virtue. Those who are committed to that single purpose explicably find the power to achieve it.

Christmas Wisdom

*Pastor’s Note: This is another short article I wrote in the late 90s along with some others for the Church section of the local newspaper where we lived in Globe, Arizona. I thought it might interest my readers and I HAVE updated some of the Scriptures references. All in all, it is pretty much as it was published in the Church editorial of the newspaper. The pictures were added for this posting.

“Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.” – Luke 2:14. This IS the song of Christmas. It was first sung, not by one angel, which would have been magnificent enough, but by a multitude, a heavenly choir, one version of the Bible states, “a host of others (angels) – the armies of heaven.” (Luke 2:13 NLT). And the congregation they were singing too was not well to-do at all. It was not composed of famous athletes, movie stars or other celebrities of the time. No, the angels sang to poor shepherds.

vm glory to God

But they sang of God’s glory. Why? Because Jesus Christ was born. ALL-man and ALL-God. Yes, He was only a helpless baby. His first clothes were rags, strips of cloth. And His first bed was a feeding trough, most likely filled with hay, surrounded with penned animals, hardly what we would call sanitary conditions. Yet the angels of heaven sang gloriously about Him. From our perspective His welcome into this world was pretty poor. But from a heavenly perspective the angels sang, “Glory to God.”

You see, this child was, and though no longer a child, is the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and the “Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). But you just might be asking yourself why has He not brought peace after more than two thousand years?

WHY?

Simply because so many people STILL reject Him as the Prince of Peace, or, the Messiah for that matter. It is simply a choice man makes and God, in His infinite love for mankind will NOT force him to accept the gift of His Son.

“What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source your pleasures that wage war in your members? You lust and do not have; so you commit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask.” – James 4:1-2. This was penned many years later under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Still you ask, WHY is there no peace?

James was telling us that inner peace is needed first and foremost. It has to start from the inside, deep within the spirit of man. There is only ONE who can give that to us and He was born just over two thousand years ago.

But, if you choose to receive this Christ of Christmas, you too can find inner peace and then you can sing of the hope of “peace among men” with full confidence and faith, giving glory to God, our Heavenly Father!

God’s Gift of Jesus

*Pastor’s Note: Here’s another poem from one of my favorite Christian poets. On keeping with the theme of Christmas and the Birth of Christ Jesus, I offer you this poetry from Sister Deborah Ann Belka from her website, CHRISTian Poetry – By Deborah Ann. Please visit her site and be blessed, and remember to pray for her ministry (service) as part of the Body of Christ.

God's gift of Jesus - dab

A Child, a Babe,
today is born
the Son of Man
Salvation’s horn.

Our Mighty God,
the Sacrificial Lamb
fulfills the Word
of the great I AM.

A Carpenter, a King,
brings Good Cheer . . .
of His Kingdom
soon coming here.

Our Counselor, Our Rock,
our Father Everlasting
long ago Wise Men
were heard forecasting.

A Child is born,
God’s gift to you and I
for the Morning Star
has risen in the sky!

~~~~~~~~
Isaiah 9:6
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government
shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be
called Wonderful Counselor,
Mighty God, Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peace.
Broken!
anecdotal stories
I was in Dollar Tree one night, some time ago, and there was a lady with two kids behind me in the LONG line. One was a big kid, and the other one was a toddler. The bigger one had a pack of glow sticks, and the toddler was screaming for them. The Mom opened the pack and gave him one which stopped his tears. He walked around with it smiling; but then the bigger boy took it, and the toddler started screaming again. Just as the Mom was about to fuss, the older child bent the glow stick and handed it back to the toddler. As we walked outside at the same time, the toddler noticed that the stick was now glowing; and his brother said, “I had to break it so that you could get the full effect from it.”
I almost ran, because l could hear God saying to me, “I had to break you to show you why I created you. You had to go through it so you could fulfill your purpose.”
That precious child was happy just swinging that “unbroken” glow stick around in the air, because he didn’t understand what it was created to do – which was “glow.”
There are some people who will be content just “being,” as they are, but some of us are chosen, out of the crowd, as it were . . . we have to be “broken,” for us and others to “see” the full effect.
as c07 glowsticks
We have to get sick.
We have to lose a job.
We go through a divorce.
We have to bury our spouse, parents, best friend, or our child . . .
In those moments of desperation, we were broken. But . . . when the breaking is done, then we will be able to see the reason for which we were created. So when you see us glowing, just know that we have been broken, and we are now useful to the Creator for the purpose for which we were made!
Author Unknown
There is a saying my wife’s mom used to tell me often times; “Jesus is the Rock. If you fall on the Rock you will be broken and He can use you. If you let the Rock fall on you, you will be crushed to dust, and thus useless.” I later found this is Scripturally accurate; (Matthew 21:44). Mom knew what she was talking about!
Thanks to my wife’s cousin, Robin Smith for posting this on social media.
Hold Tight To Christmas – Walter A. Maier
walter a maier portrait
Walter Arthur Maier (October 4, 1893 – January 11, 1950) was a noted radio personality, public speaker, prolific author, university professor, scholar of ancient Semitic languages and culture, Lutheran theologian and editor. He is best known as the speaker for The Lutheran Hour radio broadcast from 1930 to 1950.
Maier planned to enter the ministry from an early age. His family supported his goals by arranging for him to attend the Concordia Collegiate Institute in New York, an academy combining both high school and junior college in the fashion of a European Gymnasium. Here, young Maier learned Greek, Latin, and German, along with other background materials suitable for an aspiring Lutheran minister. And here he first developed his love for studies in Hebrew, the language of the Christian Old Testament.
An Excerpt:
“Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.” – Luke 2:19
CONSTANTLY KEEP THE CHRISTMAS TRUTH!
How noble and outstanding the Virgin Mary was! While we dare not endorse the error of some who have made her almost equal to God Himself, called her, in effect, the promised deliverer of the human race, we must not descend to the other extreme which regards her only as an average Palestinian mother. Twice, in the words of angels and men, does the Bible call her “blessed…among women.” We dare not detract from that or go beyond it. She who bore our Lord Jesus should be an example of excellency for all women.
Therefore we plead: Women of America, follow Mary! Remember that God has made you, the wives, mothers, daughters, of this country the guardians of much that is best and highest. If you fail us, the loss will be irreparable. The forces of hell are working in unbroken shifts, using the emergencies of war for a systematic attack on Christian womanhood. Too often their unholy assaults have been successful. Think of the girls lined up at tavern bars, elbow to elbow with men! Recall the startling increase in drunkenness among women! Hear the reports of growing profanity in large industrial plants! Behold the evidence of shocking immorality, cunningly practiced in the name of patriotism, and then ask God to give you a constant vision of Christmas and the glorious heights to which womanhood was exalted when Mary became the mother of the world’s Savior!
gs mary mother of JesusEspecially, however, should we all follow Mary in her faith. She knew more about the birth of Christ than any other person on earth; and unfalteringly she trusted the Almighty. It is recorded of her in Scripture, “Blessed is she that believed.” There were mysteries for Mary at the manger, promises she could hardly understand. The angel had told her that her Babe was to be the Son of God; yet He came into the world amid abject poverty; and the first to adore Him were not priests or church-men, but lowly shepherds. She had been assured that her Child would “save His people from their sins” and that His coming brought “good tidings of great joy” for “all people”; still was her Son not born an outcast? Only once in the whole marvelous story of her motherhood did she inquire, “How shall this be?”
We need that same trusting faith. I shall not argue or debate with you at length questions concerning the incarnation, the virgin birth, Christ’s two natures, and other truths which surpass our powers of understanding; I simply ask you to approach the whole Christmas record with an unbiased mind and permit facts to convince you.
Mary did not merely listen to the Christmas message and then forget it. We read in plain, one-syllable words, that after Jesus was born she “kept all these things,” the startling promises concerning the Holy Child, “in her heart!” We likewise must hold tight to the Christmas blessing even after the evergreen and decorations have been removed. The benedictions of our Savior’s birth are far too great to be restricted by the short span of twenty-four hours.
When Paula, a fifth-century Christian, came to Bethlehem, she knelt at the reputed site of the manger and exclaimed: “I see the divine Infant wrapped in His swaddling clothes. I hear my Lord crying in His cradle.”
While it is neither possible nor advisable for you now to make a pilgrimage to Palestine, by faith you can constantly keep close to the Christ Child. Accept Him as your Redeemer now! Take Him with you tomorrow when you go to work, when you march or drill., when you who must travel begin your journey! Let every day re-echo the rejoicing of the first Christmas: “Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord”!
Come back to the manger during this radiant Christmas season with the holy resolve that, God’s Spirit sustaining you, you will guard every assurance of the Savior’s love as your priceless possession! Keep Christ in your family circle! Fathers, think of Mary, a weak woman with outstanding strength of devotion; and before the old year closes, resolve with Joshua, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”! Keep the Gospel in your churches! Keep Christ on the air! Battle determinately against every sinister, un-American, anti-Christian movement that would bar broadcasts like our Bringing Christ to the Nations in a day when our boys are shedding their blood to preserve the freedom of religion!
Motives – Accomplishment With Mixed Motives
anecdotal stories
Exodus 4:18, “Then Moses departed and returned to Jethro his father-in-law and said to him, ‘Please, let me go, that I may return to my brethren who are in Egypt, and see if they are still alive.’ And Jethro said to Moses, ‘Go in peace.’”
Exodus 14:13 “But Moses said to the people, ‘Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the LORD which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again forever. The LORD will fight for you while you keep silent.’”
Acts 9:1-3, “Now Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest, and asked for letters from him to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, both men and women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. As he was traveling, it happened that he was approaching Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him; . . .”
Not Where He Began
A penurious Charles Dickens returned to his London home in the fall of 1843. His house, the holiday abroad, and a growing family taxed his earning ability. In October, 1843, borrowing a subplot from an earlier novel, he began a short Christmas story that he confidently felt would make money. Working furiously, he produced the story in six weeks, in time for December publication. He called it A Christmas Carol.
But something happened to Dickens as he wrote the story, something that crept over and saturated him with its presence – the same Christmas spirit that overtook old Scrooge. His story became a work of love, not just of finances. He later wrote an American friend that he had wept and laughed over the story as he wrote it.
He wanted it priced cheaply so everyone could buy a copy. Expensive illustrations in the work, however, kept his profit to only 230 pounds instead of the 1,000 he needed. However, A Christmas Carol continued to sell yearly, and his enhanced reputation brought greater success to his subsequent works, several of which became classics. He had begun A Christmas Carol to make money. In writing the story, however, the spirit of Christmas seized, then obsessed him. It often happens that those who tinker with the Bethlehem story find themselves obsessed by its Christ.
Prayer From Fears, Doubts and Worries
*Pastor’s Note: You know that during the Holiday Seasons, and especially during the Christmas Season there are many who start to suffer from fears, doubts, worries and even regrets; yet this is a time when peace and joy should be flooding their hearts and minds.
My dear Brother-in-Christ, Evangelist Steven Ray Ferguson posted this prayer on social media about a week ago and it so struck me because so many ARE struggling in their minds. Read this prayer and take it to heart. Our Heavenly Father knows your concerns and your needs even before you can speak them, yet all He desires is that relationship with you that draws you near to Him. God to Him and especially during this season and I guarantee you that the peace and joy that passes all our understanding and comprehension will be yours! God Bless as you draw near to the Father through His gift, the Son, Jesus Christ!
Most Gracious Heavenly Father;
Encircle my mind. I have so many worries, doubts, fears and regrets to sift through. Please bring stillness and calm, remind me that you hold all these things for me and took them to the cross so that I might have peace. Encircle my heart, for I am wounded, broken-hearted and empty. Please bring a new fullness, pour in your unconditional and extravagant love so that I might know new restoration and healing.
Encircle my soul, surround the heaviness of doubt, the weight of the burdens I carry and the ties that bind. With your presence, fill my soul with heavens light, with eternal promises and new faith. Encircle my body, for I am tired, worn down with ailments and in need of deep restoration. Come with power, that I might emerge refreshed and ready to walk again.
Encircle me Lord. Encircle my whole being – mind, heart, soul and body. Lord, I need you so.
In Jesus Name, Amen!
The Bummer Lambs
*Pastor’s Note: Here’s another one from years ago that I have always loved! The author, however is unknown. Enjoy and be blessed!
Every once in a while, a ewe will give birth to a lamb and reject it. There are many reasons she may do this. If the lamb is returned to the ewe, the mother may even kick the poor animal away. Once a ewe rejects one of her lambs, she will never change her mind.
These little lambs will hang their heads so low that it looks like something is wrong with its neck. Their spirit is broken.
These lambs are called “bummer lambs.” Unless the Shepherd intervenes, that lamb will die, rejected and alone. So, do you know what the Shepherd does?
as good shepherd
He takes that rejected little one into His home, hand-feeds it and keeps it warm by the fire. He will wrap it up with blankets and hold it to His chest so the bummer can hear His heartbeat. Once the lamb is strong enough, the Shepherd will place it back in the field with the rest of the flock.
But that sheep never forgets how the Shepherd cared for him when his mother rejected him. When the Shepherd calls for the flock, guess who runs to Him first?
That is right, the bummer sheep. He knows His voice intimately.
It is not that the bummer lamb is loved more, it just knows intimately the One who loves it and has experienced that love, one on one.
So many of us are bummer lambs, rejected and broken. But He is the good Shepherd. He cares for our every need and holds us close to His heart so we can hear His heartbeat.
I am a bummer lamb adopted and loved by The Good Shepherd! You can be one too! Jesus IS the Good Shepherd! Don’t be afraid to run to Him.
Giving Thanks In All Things
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, “Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” (KJV)
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (NKJV)
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, “Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” (NLT)
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, “Rejoice always. Pray continually. Give thanks in every situation because this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (CEB)
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, “Always be joyful and never stop praying. Whatever happens, keep thanking God because of Jesus Christ. This is what God wants you to do.” (CEV)
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, “Rejoice always and delight in your faith; be unceasing and persistent in prayer; in every situation [no matter what the circumstances] be thankful and continually give thanks to God; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.” (AMP)
pd rejoice pray give thanks
Yes, I know, it appears I’m being rather redundant with the Word of God. Are six versions too much? Not enough? You see, I have a point I want to make about giving thanks and there is a lot of misunderstanding with some Christians concerning these verses and others like it.
First, as Christians, true followers and disciples of Jesus Christ, we have more than enough to be thankful for and it shouldn’t be any stretch of the imagination to come up with things to be extremely thankful for.
But here’s the thing; I’ve actually heard it preached AND taught, that we are supposed to give thanks FOR everything. Now notice, I highlighted the word FOR. For those of you who know the Word of God, you realize and recognize the Apostle Paul’s statement, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” – Romans 8:28.
I like to highlight one of the keywords in that statement as being ALL. “All things work together for good.” When God is in charge of our lives and we have surrendered fully to Him, it doesn’t matter the situation or circumstance, good, bad, indifferent, known or even unknown, He can and He will turn it around for our own good and for His glory! This means in essence, that even though the enemies of our souls mean to destroy us, God won’t let it happen. He turns everything around so that we can fulfill the purpose that He has called us too, because we truly do love Him!!
There is nowhere in this statement however that says we are to be thankful FOR the bad things. It is a strong enough assurance, or at least it should be, that God will turn everything and anything around for His glory.
However, to the Thessalonians, the same Paul wrote to “give thanks in everything.” But this is why it is so important to read and apply the Word of God in the way it was meant, otherwise, there can be confusion and yes, even struggles. How can I sincerely give thanks for something bad that happens?
pd give thanks
Well, you don’t; that’s just crazy. This is why you need to clearly understand the Word. The Apostle did say anywhere in the Scriptures to give thanks FOR everything, but rather IN everything or in other words IN every and any situation or circumstance. We can go through a rough or even bad time and yet, there is still room to be thankful to the Lord for the blessings He HAS bestowed upon us and also to realize those blessings don’t just stop suddenly!
For instance, Paul was never thankful to be in prison, but he was most definitely still thankful for the Lord’s presence and blessings while in prison. Can you see the difference? When we can be thankful, no matter the circumstance, we actually give our Heavenly Father by His Holy Spirit the ability to do the work to turn the situation around so that He will be glorified.
Beginning in Acts 16:25 we find Paul and Silas in prison singing hymns and giving glory to the Lord while other prisoners listened to them. If you read on, you will see that the Lord used that instance, rather than let the devil defeat them, turn it around so they could give witness and testimony to the guard! They certainly weren’t happy to be IN prison, but they were still happy to be free IN Christ Jesus, so they were able to rejoice and be thankful. Because of it, God STILL received the glory!
So, brothers and sisters, don’t be confused or deceived. Just realize that no matter how you find yourself, you can still give thanks for the amazing blessings that God continues to shower on us, no matter the condition we are in. In closing remember one other statement the Apostle made concerning this very thing:
“Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” – Philippians 4:11-13.
Being content is another form of gratitude and thanksgiving. Why? Because it is Christ Jesus Who strengthens us, so therefore, we CAN be thankful and rejoice!
So, remember as you are gathered with family and/or friends this Holiday, you can be thankful no matter your circumstances or situation that you find yourself IN. Let God bless you despite anything bad that has or can happen. “Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. Give thanks while you are IN whatever situation (it’s bound to pass)!”
pd thanksgiving blessings
So, God bless each and every one of you this Thanksgiving Day. I pray God’s richest blessings come to you and your loved ones, especially as you remember and reminisce about all the good things in God!
Prayer for The Empty Seat
*Pastor’s Note: For whatever reason, every Holiday there are loved ones not with us. Some have passed on, others are away from family and loved ones while serving others. Let us remember them in our prayers this Season.
pp 118 prayer for empty seat
Dear Lord;
Today we lift up the families who are going to have an empty seat at their Holiday table. Someone they love won’t be there, and their absence is undeniable, their presence longed for, and hearts broken by it. Some holidays, this pain is almost too much to bare, and this week is no exception. Oh, but Father, You see these families in their heartache, and You long to give comfort to their hearts and souls. In this empty seat at their table, I pray that You would fill it with Your presence and a peace that is rooted in Your very Character . . . Hope. Give these families hope as they anticipate the empty seat. And in that hope, please renew their strength.
In Jesus’ Precious Name we ask, Amen!
