Why, Oh Why? – 1

*Pastor’s Note: Twenty years and two months ago to the date, one of the most tragic events in modern history struck the United States of America. It has become known as the attacks of 9/11. As so many still remember, it happened in 2001 when al-Qaeda terrorists took over four commercial planes and drove two of them into the Twin Towers in New York City and a third one, headed for and crashed into the side of the Pentagon building. The fourth, whose Washington D.C. target is still unknown was thwarted by the bravery of the passengers and crashed into a Pennsylvania field. As everyone remembers, both Twin Towers collapsed and a lot of damage was done to the Pentagon building. It truly was a day in modern American history that would not soon be forgotten.

This lesson is in part what I wrote those twenty years ago with updates concerning the state of our Nation today. It all stems from so many back then and still to this day asking the most obvious question; why would a loving and caring God allow something so evil to happen back then and why does He allow the blatant corruption and wickedness going on in our nation and the world today, only twenty years later.

People and many who should know better are still asking, Why, oh why?

If you have ever asked the question why, or have had a friend or loved one ask you how a loving God could allow something so horrific to happen, or how a supposedly compassionate God could continue to allow corruption and wickedness to take place so blatantly, then please take this message to heart, pray about it meditate on it and seek answers in the Scriptures of the Bible. Do whatever it takes so that you and those around you can and will understand that our God IS, beyond a doubt, has been and always will be a God of unfathomable love.

pd 9-11 tragedy

America did experience a grave tragedy on September 11, 2001 and we all continue to mourn for those souls that were lost and the relatives and friends left behind to grieve. In the wake of tragedies such as this, something that has been utterly foreign to America, it is only natural that we want to question why. And of all the questions I have heard back then and in the recent history of this country’s political climate, the question as to why or how a loving God could allow this to happen has been in the forefront.

Even talking two decades ago with other pastors whom I was associated with, the question as to why this could happen had been on the minds of many people, both non-Christian and Christian alike. I firmly remember that even some of our prominent television evangelists or leaders have asked the question as to why. To be honest with you, when I heard them then and hear them now ask that question it does come as somewhat of a surprise to me.

I also remember there was a lot of concern then as to whether this is punishment or judgment from God. Today in our nation, this is a constant question and commentary on events that have taken place over the last couple of years especially.

Back in 2001 I had heard so many so-called prophecies during the time surrounding that tragedy, BUT – only after the fact and not before. Today, the “prophets” are coming out of the woodwork, so to speak, and not all of them are relying on the Word of God to guide them as a true prophet is supposed to.

Now, I do not want to criticize the “prophecies” except in regard to what the Apostle John and even the Apostle Paul has told us; “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” – 1 John 4:1.

The Apostle Paul wrote extensively on this; “Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge.” – 1 Corinthians 14:29. Remember, this is right after the chapter reminding us to do everything motivated by godly love. But he also went on to say:

“Do not quench the Spirit; do not despise prophetic utterances. But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:19-22. (NASB)

pd false prophet today

Way too many people today, especially, love to take bits and pieces of Scripture to use as they see fit, disregarding the context with which it was written and meant. It’s not wrong to take a part of Scripture here and there AS LONG as you keep its meaning in context! For instance, it is easy to tell people to “not despise prophecy,” and totally forget that we are ALSO to TEST all things, holding fast to what is good,” as the New King James Version puts it.

If you are still young in the Lord or you lack understanding of the majority of Scriptures, you need to rely on those who are most like Jesus and His disciples and especially in their everyday walk with the Lord, and have them explain to you what those things, especially things dealing with prophecy, mean.

Now here’s the situation and I hope that you as a Christian are mature enough to understand this; God our Father, has given us by His Holy Spirit the ability to discern, which means to examine and scrutinize the prophecies that come forth so that we may not be deceived. But, and this is where so many fall for “so-called prophetic words,” even aside from the spiritual gifts that He DOES still bestow on us, He has given all of us, His mighty Word, not just for the knowledge contained in it, but also for the experience, insight and UNDERSTANDING that it opens up to us. The Bible is not just a text written with a set of instructions on how to behave, it is life itself, set down by example, it is the portal to the Father’s heart, and witness to the Living Word of Christ Jesus, and taken as a whole and not just as little pieces here and there, we get a glimpse into the Majesty and Awesomeness of the Fulness of Who God is, in ALL of His Glory!

We have to understand that the Word of God is the ONLY True foundation we have to rely on and everything God wants us to know, the past, the present and yes, even the future is written down for our instruction and understanding. If someone prophecies, and prophecy is not just prediction, but expounding the Word with authority and power, then those prophecies are already found in the Written Scripture!

In other words, God, does NOT use soothsayers and divination to deal with His people. In fact He WARNS us to stay away from them. He has already given us all the Revelation we need to succeed as His Children in His Word. When God tells us something about an upcoming event, through a Holy Spirit-filled prophet, the proof of His handiwork and plan within that upcoming event will be found in the Scriptures for the Bible tells us this: “Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.” – Amos 3:7. This is not just for Old Testament, Old Covenant Prophets, but for New Covenant Prophets anointed by the Holy Spirit’s gifting! But the truth and the confirmation can already be found through the discerning heart by looking within the written Word.

pd bible prophecies

I told someone the other day that we need to realize there is coming a time when we, the chosen children of God will NOT need the written Word any longer because we WILL be in fellowship AND co-heirs with the Living Word, Christ Jesus!

Now I’m going to end this first part with this thought:

The Bible reveals to us not JUST in words, but also as a living picture, when taken as a whole, the nature and character of the One who is not just our Creator, but our Loving Father! When we read His Word and allow the Holy Spirit to “lead us into ALL truth” we gain a perspective of the One who loves us as only the indwelling Spirit can reveal. Unregenerate man will never be able to see that quality of God as Father, only those whose spirits have been reborn, reawakened and made alive to the Spirit of the Father! Remember this; “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” – John 4:24.

In other words, the natural man has absolutely no way to understand the nature or character of God, let alone Who He IS!

We will continue next time by answering the lingering question as to WHY.

  1. Good perspective, Roland.
If you follow my blog, you may have read a few pieces where I have written about my dreams. I ask the Lord daily to help me remember everything (including dreams) that I ought to remember and forget everything else (which includes the majority of my dreams.) But even if I feel a dream is from God, I still test it against Scripture. If it’s from Him, He is simply reminding me of something He has already said that I need to remember and apply to whatever my situation is at the time. I never even look for “new revelation” in dreams, or anywhere else. It’s all there in Scripture, I just might need a little help discerning its meaning.

    • I agree with you 100%. That is how I am. I’ve learned over too many years it’s easy to be deceived without the foundation of Scriptures. God has promised He would NOT leave His children in the dark and He has been so faithful that way! That’s for the confirmation but also to know there are others not afraid to test that which comes to them!! God bless!
