From the Cradle to the Cross

He was sent and He came to fulfill a mission; ALL-Man, ALL-God, carrying the treasure of His precious blood to the Cross of Calvary. Our sacrificial lamb, payment for our penalty of sin in the world. His gift is free to ALL who are willing to receive it.

May the Spirit of Christmas and the Spirit of Redemption be in your hearts continually from this day forward and may all the precious Joy and gracious Peace from our Heavenly Father be yours!

John 3:
16 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.
18 “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son.”

Living In The Valleys

Psalm 23:4, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”

The other day I was talking with a friend and brother in the Lord. We were discussing the joy and elation that was felt when a person is first saved, and then how it seems to wear off and life seems to set in. I’ve always felt this was the “honeymoon” phase of our becoming reborn in the spirit. Though this idea didn’t formulate until many years later, I always likened it to the fact that we have just accepted our “betrothal” to the Bridegroom, Jesus Christ and as becoming part of the living Church we are considered the “Bride!”

Many times though over the years, I, like so many other Christians have had what is best described as Mountain-top experiences; times of refreshing and yes at times exhilaration, an almost vacation sense of feeling from the rigors of life. But as any Christian knows, these times never last and the routines of life take over once again. These times always remind be of what the disciples Peter, James and John must have felt like when Jesus took them up the mountain and they witnessed Jesus talking with Moses and Elijah. Can you even begin to imagine the FEELING that must have coursed through them?! (Matthew 17:1-13).

After talking with my brother in Christ, I started thinking and praying about this concept, for as I stated, it is a common occurrence in the life of a disciple of Christ Jesus who is trying to live the life and follow the example of His Lord and Master Jesus Christ. Those times ARE times of refreshing where we feel sometimes the most closest to our Master and Lord. Those are times that I and many others wish could go on forever and they increase my/our longing for Heaven. I truly believe these are times given, not just to be refreshed, but a tangible “feel” or sense, as it were of what Heaven might be like, albeit a very miniscule sense. I believe these are also times that prepare us for the rigors that are still ahead of us, down in the valleys where life really takes place.

You see, as a general rule, real life DOES take place down between the shadows of the mountains. That for the most part is where we live our everyday lives and that is where the most “dangers” as-it-were lie. When the psalmist, David, spoke of walking these valleys, he was most assuredly remembering his life as a shepherd. It is in the valleys, sometimes close to the villages, but usually always where the best pastures lay. A shepherd’s life was being one with the flock. A shepherd usually had a special call or a special horn or whistle with which the sheep would recognize and then gather around him. This is why the Scripture states that Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” – John 10:27.

So it is with life today and this passage in Psalms is a great analogy for it. In REAL life, our spiritual life, we follow the example of Christ through the leading of the Holy Spirit. We HAVE to live life in this world still, though we are not OF it, we ARE in it, and as sheep, as part of the flock of Jesus, the Great Shepherd, we need to feed on the Water of Life and the Bread of Life which comprises OUR green pastures that He leads us to through the Holy Spirit. The way we grow strong, is by feeding on the right food, and following the shepherd and the exercise that living life affords, with its struggles and trials. We gain strength from those things; applying the “nourishment” to the tasks at hand! It also tends to do one other thing: the sheep who stay closest to the shepherd help the other sheep when they see the shepherd begin to move and such. Those “hardy” sheep actually help the younger, less mature sheep to know what to do!

The sheep learn through time and following the shepherd to trust him implicitly. The sheep don’t concern themselves with the fact that they aren’t at the top of the mountain, or at the lowest part of the valley; all they know is the best grazing and the best water is found where the shepherd leads them!

David wrote that “Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” But in this analogy, what does that mean to you and me? First, you have to know what those tools actually do and what they signify. They aren’t just one tool but actually two separate ones. The rod, was usually a heavy, weighted club that could be used to defend in case of danger. The shepherd would always have it handy in case of predatory animals that liked to prey on the sheep. The shepherd’s rod was a sign or symbol of protection and authority. If the sheep were ever in danger, they soon learned they were in safe hands with the shepherd nearby. The staff on the other hand was used to steady the shepherd on his walks, especially along narrow paths, along riverbeds and such, but also his staff usually had a crook, commonly known as a shepherd’s crook at one end of it. The shepherd could use that “hook” to help a lamb or sheep that had strayed into the brambles or maybe even fell into the water while crossing or drinking. It was also used to keep the sheep in line, when traversing narrow passages or bypassing in ancient times a neighbor’s crop field, for the sheep were not allowed to stray into another’s crops. The staff helped keep the sheep in line as it were. It still signifies discipline.

So it is in our lives today. We serve a Lord that is quick to defend and protect us; “My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.” – 1 John 2:1-2. Jesus, the Great Shepherd is our Intercessor, or Advocate between the Father and ourselves! Our enemies, whether it be actual sin, the devil or even the world are always ready to make an accusation against us!!! We know that when we feel threatened, when we feel the danger of temptation, all we have to do, like a frightened sheep is to call out to Him and He is there!

His staff, the Living Word of God with the power of the Holy Spirit helps keep us in line. It corrects us, it disciplines us, shows us the right way, the right path to take or the path we need to stay on. It helps us when we DO get into the thorns or too near the edge to keep our feet steady upon the path that has been prepared for us!

It is no wonder that David could with confidence declare that he would “fear no evil.” We have nothing to fear and remember, the shadows are only that, they are NOT the real thing. They are the wisp of what we fear, yet we have no need to fear them because the Great Shepherd, is “near us!” The closer we stay to Him, the more intimate we are with Him personally, the more we rely upon His rod and His staff, the more peace and comfort we have while we continue to live the lives set before us!!

The mountain tops are great and they give you a great view to look around and enjoy creation, but consider this; on the mountain tops you get your eyes on creation and while you look and give our Heavenly Father the Glory, all the while your eyes are NOT on the Creator! In the valleys, we rely on His presence, His protection, His guidance and our eyes and ears stay focused on Him so that when He moves, we move with Him and when He speaks, we follow. It is in the valleys that we are always the closest to our Lord and Master!! That in itself, should give us each individually such great joy as to be indescribable!!

I don’t like the stumbles, the falls, the brambles and thorns that life throws our way, any more than the next person, but because I have been trying to follow the shepherd for all these years, I have become familiar with that terrain that He leads me through and I have been able to avoid them more and more than in my younger years, and now, my example can help the other sheep to keep in sight of the Great Shepherd when He moves or speaks! So the life journey should be for all of us. When I am closest to my Master, “I will fear no evil; For You are with me!”

Are you an example, following the Shepherd closely? Do you want to be? Take comfort in what life with Him holds in store for you and realize you have no need to fear the shadows when you are under His protection AND guidance!

Prayer For Wisdom & Discernment

This prayer was posted on Facebook by a Christian Brother and I thought it was fitting for the time we are in right now. Click on his name to see other prayers on his site: Lazarus Bethany

Heavenly Father there are so many false teachings and doctrines of demons that are flooding mainline churches today, and I pray that You would give me discernment and protection from all those, (whether knowingly or unknowingly) who are distorting the word of truth and the gospel of grace.

Give me wisdom and understanding as I read Your Word, so that I may be enabled to discern what is biblical truth and what is a distortion of that truth. Father Your Word tells us that in the last days there will come times of great difficulty, where love will wear thin and people will be become proud and arrogant, abusive and unholy – having an outward appearance of godliness but denying the truth of the gospel. Protect me I pray, and all those I love from being influenced by such evil distortions, and keep us under Your promised protection, by Your grace.

Protect our hearts and mind from all those who distort the truth, and keep us all covered in the love of God, and protected by the blood of Christ – as we wait for His any day return and Who alone is able to keep us from stumbling and to present us blameless before the presence of His glory with great joy – in Jesus name we pray,

Amen

Sin – Continually Reconquered

anecdotal stories
Jeremiah 34:17, “Therefore thus says the LORD, ‘You have not obeyed Me in proclaiming release each man to his brother and each man to his neighbor. Behold, I am proclaiming a release to you,’ declares the LORD, ‘to the sword, to the pestilence and to the famine; and I will make you a terror to all the kingdoms of the earth.”

1 Peter 5:8, “Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”

Continually Fought

In 1976, with border violence in epidemic proportions, the San Diego Police Department organized an undercover detail to counter it. Of Hispanic descent, the dressed as aliens and walked the desolate canyons at night. Acting as decoys, they hoped to attract attention from thugs who preyed on helpless aliens as they crossed into the United States. In eighteen months the squad made many arrests, shot suspects, and were shot in return.

To no one’s surprise, in the next six years border crime increased. So back to the border the police went, this time openly and in uniform, not in disguise or undercover stealth. Rather than walking the canyons as potential targets, they actively patrolled in vehicles as enforcement officials.

The battle against crime is never won. Neither is the spiritual war over our souls. There may be occasions when we fight and win – titanic battles that decide the war – but even those battles must be defended. We have to repeatedly win our victory over Satan. He never reaches a point of collapse, he always has the ability to regroup and strike again. Like the border criminals, he is always alert for opportunities to raid our lives, then fade away into the wilds of life. If we remember that spiritual victories are never final, we will not be surprised by Satan’s sudden attacks.

I John 2:16-17

1 John 2:16-17, “For all that is in the world–the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life–is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”

The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life are the very things that Adam and Eve succumbed too at the very beginning of mankind’s history. John expressed it this way; the world, not the Father is the realm of sin and therefore the things of the world are related to darkness. The world order, the things that control mankind exclude God Almighty, Who IS Light!

Paul tells asks us in 2 Corinthians 6:14c, “And what communion has light with darkness?” This should be reason number one for not loving the world system. The second thing is what John is trying to warn us about: the lust of the flesh, or self-indulgence or the cravings that motivate and drive sinful man. Also, the lust of the eyes, or covetousness. So much that the world has to offer, comes to tempt us through our eyesight. In this age of advanced technology we are being bombarded with temptation from almost every aspect of life in this world! Then, the pride of life is the other thing. This is the temptation to glory in self, in aimless and empty ambition in the world itself. These are the very things that first tempted Eve and opened the door to doubting God. She saw the Tree of Knowledge was good for food, the lust of the flesh; it was most apparently pleasant to look at, the lust of the eyes; and third, it was desirable to make one wise, the pride of life! These things, this base nature does NOT come from our Heavenly Father, but through selfishness and self-centeredness (the opposite of Love) come from what the world is tempting to offer.

The third reason for not loving this world is simply that it is temporary! It is going to burn and be cleansed through fire. 2 Corinthians 4:18b, “For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” How foolish to put so much emphasis on what is most certainly going to pass away in due time! Even Job, who lived at the time of the Patriarchs, realized “And he said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name of the LORD.” – Job 1:21.

The Apostle James said this in his Epistle in James 4:4b, “Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.”

I read this somewhere and right now it slips my mind from where, but as best as I can remember, the statement goes like this: As the devil is opposed to Christ Jesus, and the flesh is hostile to the Spirit, so the world is antagonistic or at enmity with God, our Father! There is no good thing that comes from the world system! There is clearly no room for compromise, for either you love the world and the things in it or you love that which belongs to and is of God Almighty! Remember now, we are talking about what we choose to idolize in our lives when we talk about loving the world or loving God. This doesn’t mean we aren’t having to live in this world and we have to procure things to live, etc., but we are talking about putting those things that we truly love, first in our lives; is it the worldly things, or is it the things of the Spirit and of God?

Philippians 3:18-19, “For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame–who set their mind on earthly things.” Paul couldn’t have stated it more bluntly! Christians are of God, from God, for God and in God through Christ Jesus! The rest of the world is under the control of wickedness and the enemy of mankind and God. “We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.” – 1 John 5:19.

The Apostle Paul also stated this in Ephesians 2:1-3, “And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.”

Paul is saying that we walked according to what the world gave us, by the authority of the devil. We were as the walking dead and we didn’t even know it! As we previously stated, the world system relates to darkness, and is steeped in darkness, which in turn appertains to sin, which brings forth death! The power and ability to function in death is due to our slavery to the prince of the power of the air, none other than Satan, himself! Men of this world are accustomed to doing his bidding. Now before someone jumps up and shouts that we give the devil too much credit for the ills and woes of the world, I agree! The devil himself can’t be every where at once because he too is a created being. But when he fell due to arrogance and pride, he took a whole host of angels (approximately one-third – Revelation 12:4) with him in a fallen state!

Many of the ills of mankind are due to our own selfish and self-centered nature which is just opposite of a loving nature that our Heavenly Father intended. We are the “weapons” of our own demise as it were! So, we weren’t just slaves to the devil and his minions, but we were slaves to our own selfish, fallen nature! Our Father God, on the other hand, through His love for mankind, broke those chains of slavery that had us bound, and through the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ we ARE free from that bondage! We have become bond slaves to Him with a yoke that is light and allows us liberty. He calls us and He equips us that we might remain free and thereby lead others to that same freedom and liberty!

When we do the will of God, as John stated in previous verses we abide in the light, we know God, we know His love and we abide in it and He and His love abides in us. This world WILL pass away and so will all of its temptations, lusts and corruptions. Consider this; if you were an investor and had the money to spend to increase your wealth, would you invest in something that you KNOW beyond a shadow of a doubt is broken? Of course you wouldn’t. Well, the world is that broken system and it’s failure is imminent. Do you invest in it, or do you invest your eternal life in what you KNOW is a sure thing!

Those that love this world will follow the things of this world, and those that Love God will abide with Him forever! Just as a closing point of historical and Bible trivia, concerning abiding in God, the late, great D. L. Moody, a greatly loved and respected Evangelist, has inscribed on his tombstone, “He that doeth the will of God abideth forever.”**

Next post we will begin with 1 John chapter 2 verse 18.

Repentance Removes Obstacles

Psalm 51
For the choir director: A psalm of David, regarding the time Nathan the prophet came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.

1 Have mercy on me, O God,
because of your unfailing love.
Because of your great compassion,
blot out the stain of my sins.
2 Wash me clean from my guilt.
Purify me from my sin.

3 For I recognize my rebellion;
it haunts me day and night.
4 Against you, and you alone, have I sinned;
I have done what is evil in your sight.
You will be proved right in what you say,
and your judgment against me is just.

5 For I was born a sinner—
yes, from the moment my mother conceived me.
6 But you desire honesty from the womb,
teaching me wisdom even there.

7 Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
8 Oh, give me back my joy again;
you have broken me—
now let me rejoice.
9 Don’t keep looking at my sins.
Remove the stain of my guilt.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God.
Renew a loyal spirit within me.
11 Do not banish me from your presence,
and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and make me willing to obey you.
13 Then I will teach your ways to rebels,
and they will return to you.
14 Forgive me for shedding blood, O God who saves;
then I will joyfully sing of your forgiveness.
15 Unseal my lips, O Lord,
that my mouth may praise you.

16 You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one.
You do not want a burnt offering.
17 The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit.
You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.

18 Look with favor on Zion and help her;
rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then you will be pleased with sacrifices offered in the right spirit—
with burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings.
Then bulls will again be sacrificed on your altar.

When I Say That I’m A Christian

poeticpraisehdr

When I say that I’m a Christian
I’m not saying that I’m good
I’m telling you how bad I was
Until He shed His Blood.

When I say that I’m a Christian
I’m not boasting, I’m not proud
I now belong to Jesus
And I’m shouting it out loud.

When I say that I’m a Christian
It doesn’t mean I’m free of sin
But when He died upon the cross
My sins belonged to Him.

When I say that I’m a Christian
I may hold my head up high
But that’s because He gave me life
When I was doomed to die.

When I say that I’m a Christian
I’m not here to take a bow
I’m here to thank Lord Jesus
For the person I am now.

Life Happens!

Hebrews:
11:1, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

11:6, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”

12:1-2, “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Romans:
5:1-2, “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”

10:8-10, “But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

10:17, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

James:
2:17-18, “Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.”

2:26, “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.”

Mark 9:24b “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”

“Oh no, not another one of those faith sermons. Faith, Love, Joy, Temptation; can’t you preachers be creative, can’t you preach anything else?”

Yep! This was really said to me back in the late 80’s by a normally affable little old gentleman. Evidently, he was being a little melancholy due to a situation that cropped up a couple of weeks before. I replied to him then as I will right now; “You can’t be a Christian if you don’t have faith!” There, I said it. It’s the truth by the way. As the Scriptures above indicate, you can’t even have a relationship with God Almighty, our Heavenly Father, let alone please Him, without having, walking in and actively engaged in FAITH!

LIFE HAPPENS!! No, it’s not a bumper-sticker, it’s reality. Whether you’re trying to sell your house and move to another part of the country, or you are recovering from a heart-attack with new stents in place, or you have just given birth to a precious treasure whose limbs are all out of whack, or like I just went through, you develop an abscess in your teeth that can affect a heart condition and you need help NOW, you need faith in a God who has said His promises are steadfast and sure!

Life happens and it’s a journey to be sure. But the real question is, do you stumble and bumble your way through it, or do you stay focused on a clear, set and determined path, DESPITE what life throws at you? “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, And He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the LORD upholds him with His hand.” – Psalm 37:23-24.

Faith as Hebrews 11:1 states isn’t in what you see, it isn’t in what you envision, but rather it’s based on what you HOPE in the Lord and especially as that hope pertains to His promises. You may not SEE the steps the Lord has placed before you, but that doesn’t mean they’re not there, and it is our Hope in the Lord that causes us to put one step in front of the other.

I’m reminded of a scene in the now classic movie “Raiders of the Lost Ark” where the main character Indiana Jones must traverse a wide chasm to get to the Holy Grail, the chalice from the Last Supper. Looking ahead, it appeared there was a huge gap or open expanse between him and the side he needed to get too. As he was facing a decision on how to step, the camera panned from a straight-on view to a side view and you could see from the new perspective that it was an optical illusion and that there really was in front of him a solid path or bridge that spanned the chasm. Eventually he surmised something along those lines and threw dirt and gravel into what seemed to be “thin air” and he could see the now designated path.

The whole exercise according to the Hollywood writers and such was to demonstrate faith in what the character couldn’t see but what was there. In spiritual terms, it still fell short because he wasn’t willing to take a step until he DID see the pathway! As Christians, we are told by the Lord through His Word to take a step and that He has already laid out a path before us. With faith, you aren’t given the luxury of waiting until the path becomes visible and then moving forward, for then when it IS seen, it is no longer faith!

So it is with our Salvation as well. We first have to be told about such a great gift somewhere in our spiritual beginnings. Someone had to tell us about this “Gift of Salvation” and our need for it. Thus the Apostle Paul tells us that in Romans 10:17. We have to hear the Word of God first and foremost before the “seed” of that Word can germinate and grow into what we now know is faith.

Don’t get me wrong, we all start out with a little bit of faith in general. Take for instance walking into a darkened room within you house; what do you do first? If you are like most people, you walk through the doorway to that room, reach out and flip on the light switch. Immediately you expect the light to flood that room. Now you don’t see the electricity surging through the wires. You don’t even see the light bulb that is the instrument of that light, yet. But the moment you flip that switch, you expect, you HOPE for light to flood the room. In fact, we are so accustomed to it happening time and time again, we give no discernable thought to it. We just EXPECT light!

Why is that do you wonder? Because as a child you witnessed the miracle of instant light over and over again from your parents and you just followed their example knowing that every time you flipped that switch there would be light! Now, in your adulthood, you don’t just BELIEVE there will be light; without thinking about it you KNOW there will be light (barring the unfortunate situation where the bulb or electricity has gone out).

So it is in the spiritual, you hear the Word enough, that seed is planted, it is sown, and the Holy Spirit waters and nurtures it and soon enough, almost like a miracle a shoot appears, life as it were. I remember when I was young, a kid, a child really, I always had questions about God and Heaven. Used to drive my mom crazy with the questions! My dad couldn’t be bothered so it was always my mom that was bombarded with them! I even asked anyone who would listen outside the home, like teachers and friends at school. Finally as a teen-ager, going to High School, I met this other teen my age who wasn’t afraid to talk about “religion!” We used to talk for hours at times, in study hall, after classes, etc.

I would tell Ron (later became my brother-in-law) about what the Church said/taught, as I was raised Catholic, and he would tell me what the Bible said. This went on for almost a year. He knew where I went to church, what denomination I was, but I never knew what church or denomination he was until one day he invited me to a special Wednesday night youth service, he called it. I went, I was thoroughly intrigued as I had never witnessed a service like this and the guest “preacher” was totally engrossing! I couldn’t hear enough about what he was preaching. Then he gave an “altar-call,” a call to repent of our sins and allow the Lord Jesus Christ to come into our hearts! There, instantly was that green shoot from the sown seed that had been watered for almost a year. Faith sprung up, I believed this is what I needed. I was religious (at 16 that was something) but I needed to become spiritually reborn. The Word of God had been planted and watered and now it was time for results.

Now don’t get me wrong; I wasn’t thinking these things through like this back then. All I knew was that I needed to get to that altar and let Jesus do the work in my incomplete life back then. I made my confession, willingly and I believed with all my heart that I was changed back then, that I definitely was something new! It hearkens back now, to my steps being ordered of the Lord as Psalms 37:23-24 stated; and here is the completion of that thought based on the analogy of the light switch as compared to faith: “Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.” – Psalm 119:105. When you read or hear the Word of God enough and it takes root, it is like the electricity that is coursing through the wires in the walls of the house, connecting the light switch to the light bulb. When you need a bit of faith for a given situation in your life at any moment, you have the power to believe coursing through your being already if the Word of God has been stored up within your spirit!

Now as no natural analogy is entirely perfect for those things in the spiritual I want to make this thought clear; the faith to believe is based or should be based in the promises and the words of the Lord as written in our Bibles. It is not some magical belief or thought based in just general principles. It is not based on what you can imagine within yourself for that is bordering on New Age concepts that are contrary to Scriptural principles and thought. But again our belief is rooted or founded in the words of the Lord through what we read and hear from the Living Word of God! Any other belief is just what I stated before; it is New Age or magic, both of which will breed death in your spirit and the Bible tells us to avoid completely!

When faith grows, when it matures it becomes much more than just belief, but it evolves and grows into knowledge. Yes, I know I have stated this many, many times before, but it bears repeating for it does mature from mere belief to actual KNOWING! Don’t be confused, it is still faith, but so much more than just basic belief. Today for instance, due to time, experience and natural and spiritual maturity, I KNOW I am saved, redeemed, reborn in Christ. It is no longer just the experience that I had when a teenager where I believed only that I was saved.

Now in my life there is a peace that abides no matter the circumstances. It doesn’t mean that there isn’t concern for a situation, but it is no longer worry and apprehension. In actuality peace and even joy can accompany situations that in other instances would be bothersome and worrying. The reason for the peace is the justification by faith that the Apostle Paul speaks of in Romans 5:1-2. Justification or simply put, the reason for, or the belief because of, my faith and the experiences that have accumulated over the years and the resolutions that the “steps of the Lord” have demonstrated to be completed in any given situation. They add up to knowledge that when the Lord says He will take care of me, that He will meet my needs, that He will not forsake me in my times of need, then His word is true and I do not have to doubt that I will get through anything because of Him and Him alone!

One other thing; just because He has ordered my steps does not mean I no longer have free will. I still CHOOSE to follow Him and the path that He has put down before me, and the reason the path is as it is, is simply because we serve an Omniscient God, one who knows everything in advance! This is why we NEVER can take God by surprise and why He can make everything that happens to us work out for our benefit, even what the world would consider seemingly bad things! (Romans 8:28).

The Apostle Paul goes on to say this; Romans 8:29-31, “For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.”

“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”

Many people stumble over the words predestined and foreknew (as some versions translate it), but they are thinking on a merely intellectual plane and not discerning with the spirit. The Lord God Almighty, as I stated earlier, has a Character trait known as Omniscience. It means that he has ALL Knowledge or is All-Knowing. For us to be predestined, just means that since He isn’t taken by surprise by our choices, He has the way prepared for us already in the knowledge of those choices.

When Pharaoh of Moses’ day was hardening his heart, the Lord said this, “But indeed for this purpose I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be declared in all the earth.” – Exodus 9:16. Pharaoh had the choice to do what was right, but God KNEW what his choices would be, so used those very choices to demonstrate His (God’s) glory and power throughout the land. God didn’t make Pharaoh do the things he did, but He knew that Pharaoh would do them!

So it is with us throughout our life’s journey. When we are a child of God, He knows our choices. Some choices still have consequences that require discipline, which is never easy, (Proverbs 3:11-12, Hebrews 12:5-8), and others are a delight to Him (Psalm 37:23).

We sometimes forget that when we proceed with a choice, we are taking action; with actions , of any kind, there are causes and effects. Our choices become a verb rather than just a noun or a “something.” As with so many things characteristic of a lifestyle, which itself implies action, or moving forward, the spiritual lifestyle and especially FAITH is made up of many actions.

Concerning life and faith, take for instance the word journey. It can be said that life is a journey, a noun. Journey is described as “something.” But in relation to life being a journey, you can also say that we journey through life, a verb. Now journey becomes something we do! So this is why the Apostle James is so specific in the way he described the concept of faith. So much emphasis had been put on it as a “something” that it had begun to lose its distinction within a Christian’s lifestyle. We can talk about faith to others and they can easily infer that you are talking about some supernatural mystical force that brings the believer what ever it is he has enough of “IT” to draw on!! It no longer becomes the spiritual powerhouse that allows us to journey through this life as a disciple, a follower of Christ and Christ’s example!!

James sets the record straight and in my opinion (notice I said opinion) it is the perfect companion to the Book of Hebrews. To me, it is truly inspired that the order of the Books in the New Testament has Hebrews first and then James following it. The fact that a great deal of exposition is dealing with faith as an attribute of Christian behavior in both Hebrews and James is amazing and yet they find the ability to write about the results that faith provides in other areas!! That to me, is definitely the Hand of the Holy Spirit!!

James is so keen to point out that faith, being “something” is nothing without “doing” or actions. He elevates the concept of faith to beyond some New Age philosophy that deals with man’s ability to conceive, dream and believe to the actual implementation of that faith!! You see someone in need? Don’t just wish them warm, clothed, fed, prosperous, if possible within your ability make it happen by giving them blankets, clothes, food, or finances! In his day, the emerging church had already started turning from bringing all their personal belongings and putting them together for the poor, to doing just what he said was an abomination; “go in God, be blessed, be warm, etc., etc.”

James makes a great analogy also. I hope it isn’t lost on many, when he states at the end of chapter two: “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.” – James 2:26. Faith is relegated from the mysterious unto the body of a person in analogy and Works are compared to the spirit! Just the opposite of what most would consider. We would NATURALLY assume that faith, being a spiritual characteristic would be compared to the spirit of man, the life, or life’s blood that makes us who we are and that works, that is the natural progression would be compared to the body of man. This is actually what so many had relegated faith to being, the “it, the thing” rather than the motivator, the effect, or action of that “thing!” In essence, the cause is FAITH and the effect is WORKS. James knew what he was writing about under the influence of the Holy Spirit. Works are the result of what we do not see. If they are what produces fruit and life in others, it is tangible and a direct result of the faith that is NOT seen! The works is the HOPE in Hebrews that is not seen in Hebrews but becomes the EVIDENCE as seen in James!

Now as relating to Salvation and Redemption, James does not and is NOT saying that works saves. The Scriptures do NOT contradict and if they do in your analysis then it is your interpretation that is wrong. Concerning Salvation, what does Paul say? “That if you confess (works) with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe (faith) in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes (faith) unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession (works) is made unto salvation.” — Romans 10:9-10 (Emphasis added is mine).

So it isn’t the works that saves you but rather that cause (faith) which produces the confession or works. They go hand in hand, because as James says, you can’t have faith that is alive without a result of that faith. It is nothing, it is magic, occult, trying to get something out of nothing!!! Please, please don’t forget that your faith has to be in Some ONE, our Lord, God Almighty. Faith in yourself as the New Age prescribes, through conceiving, dreaming and believing is misplaced and never consistent, but only in God Almighty THROUGH the Lord Jesus Christ will faith be PLEASING to the Father and consistent in its results!!

In closing; do you feel you “lack” faith? Read and listen to your Bible more! Ask the Lord, the Originator of our faith for more as the father of the son with the mute spirit did in the Gospel of Mark. The Lord has promised to always give more of what we NEED in our spiritual lives, ALWAYS! Need more wisdom? Need more grace? Need more faith? Ask and it WILL be done, as promised and the Lord NEVER goes back on His Word!

Don’t let these abundant false teachers tell you that you lack faith and that is why you don’t receive something from God. God will always speak to you, the individual BEFORE He ever speaks to a stranger about a need you have! He may use a stranger to confirm that He IS speaking to you, but the Holy Spirit is your guide and counselor as much if not more so as someone who is gaining fame and fortune by televising the plight of God’s individual children! IF, and I stress, IF you lack faith then cry out as that father did in Mark, “Lord I believe, help my unbelief!” God, our, YOUR Heavenly Father will hear you and give you an answer to any of your questions and concerns! He’ll let you know if you NEED to be healed, if you NEED extra finances, etc., etc.

People, dear people, do NOT rate success by what you have and do not have and especially in light of the world’s standards. Rate success by your intimacy with your Heavenly Father through Christ Jesus! Rate success by how you follow His leading and commandments, to love Him and to love your neighbor! That is REAL and TRUE faith! That is REAL LIFE!!

When life happens as it most surely will until the Lord calls us home, look at each situation through the eyes of the Lord, the final outcome, and not what is immediately starring you in the eyes. That is faith at work.

Remember what the Apostle Paul wrote; “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” – 2 Corinthians 4:17-18.

I John 2:15

1 John 2:15, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

Now remember that John is still talking to the Christians that he has designated into three categories, the little children, young men and fathers. He is still addressing them when he continues on to say what he does in verse 15.

This verse on the surface seems very simple and self-explanatory. But I want to delve just a lot deeper into it. Now many well-meaning Christians throughout time have misinterpreted this scripture to mean that because of the Apostles emphatic statement, we are to set ourselves apart and have absolutely no dealings with the “heathens” of this world! Just as the Gentiles in the Old Testament were to be avoided by the children of Israel, so these modern day gentiles are to be avoided by true Christians.

Now, sad to say we even have some modern day churches that teach outright that the “light” meaning themselves, cannot have any dealings with the “darkness” meaning those outside their circle of believers. Don’t be surprised by this if you haven’t encountered it yet, in our younger days the Holy Spirit actually led my wife and I to one of these “churches” so that we might learn what is being taught in the “name of the Lord!” They are a denominational church, but on the fringes so to speak. If you didn’t know different they would sound just like any other Christian Church, denominationally speaking, but it is when you are “wooed” to their services and Bible studies that you soon realize the differences.

We had told the Lord, we would go where He wants us to go and do what He wanted us to do that we might learn more and become more like Him! He truly does take us at His Word! In due time, and since this denomination was BIG in debating doctrine with other denominations, it was a perfect learning ground. We did come to love the people very much because for the most part, they DID love the Lord, they just believe they had to cling to a NATURAL holiness (under Law) rather than a spiritual holiness under Grace!

The Lord did allow us to move on after a little more than a year, and we DID learn a lot, but some of it was truly how NOT to behave or believe as a true Christians, yet even today I can tell you that my knowledge of what goes on in the “church” world HAS been heightened because of the experiences the Holy Spirit allowed us to be a part of through those learning years! The sad part is, even some members that became our closest friends, told us that if we go back into the darkness of mainstream “church” we would no longer be welcome in their “light.” True to their word, there was only one sister, out of a church of about 120 that would ever have anything to do with Sue and I!

Now if what some of these denominations believe is absolutely true, you should be able to realize right off the bat, that the command to, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature,” — Mark 16:15, would be near to impossible and the ability to win a person over by demonstrating God’s love through actions would be equally impossible due to the fact you couldn’t associate with them. The only hope these “religious institutions” have of winning someone to the Lord would be the hope that a “heathen” would see their great love displayed to one another and want to escape the pleasures of the world, or in their street “preaching” to them of hellfire and damnation they would flee the world’s enticements in fear!

In truth, the world that John is speaking about, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, is that part of the world system or organization established by man that is in direct contradiction to the Will and desires of the God who created this earth. The world we refer to in this instance is not the material creation that our Heavenly Father made for us to enjoy, but rather the world ideals set up to give men more pleasure and the ability to accomplish what THEY want, aside from the will of the Lord. When we speak of the world as our enemy then, we need to understand and remember that it is NOT the creation, but, and I reiterate, the system that man has established in this world, the system with its lusts and pleasures that are continually enticing men, that which is enmity, or contrary to God Himself. The world, through man has developed its own set of temptations and vices, and just as in everything else that man has put his hand to do, man has left God out of their equations. The very nature of our old self corrupts everything that it’s applied too. The very thing that God created for man for his (mankind’s) benefit is the very thing that man has tried to use against God. The created world, the earth itself, is a gift from God and we are its stewards. As such, we need to keep a proper perspective concerning the pleasures and blessings that we derive directly from this treasure the Lord created for man.

Remember this that the Apostle Paul wrote his protégé, Timothy, “Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.” – 1 Timothy 6:17.

The first part of Psalm 24:1 states, “The earth is the LORD’S, and all its fullness, …..”
Also, Psalm 50:12 confirms this in its ending saying, “For the world is Mine, and all its fullness.”

We also need to understand and remember that after God created everything in the world, He looked upon His creation and it is implied that “in His heart” He saw that it was good (Genesis 1:31). The word that is used to describe our English word, good (twob or tobe – Strong’s Hebrew #02986), in the original language means: best, better, great, complete. God did not find fault with His creation as He made it.

**Adam Clarke’s Commentary states it this way: The plan wise, the work well executed, the different parts properly arranged; their nature, limits, mode of existence, manner of propagation, habits, mode of sustenance, etc., etc., properly and permanently established and secured; for every thing was formed to the utmost perfection of its nature, so that nothing could be added or diminished without encumbering the operations of matter and spirit on the one hand, or rendering them inefficient to the end proposed on the other; and God has so done all these marvelous works as to be glorified in all, by all, and through all.

However, after Adam and Eve sinned, the ground was then cursed and tainted, its beauty diminished and stained for as long as sin remained on check. It wasn’t because the CREATION wasn’t perfect, but corruption due to sin then came into play. The depth of this disaster hit home to me years ago as a young man in my twenties and fairly newly married. I was living in Washington state, where I was born and raised, and I was visiting Mount Rainier National Park with my new brother-in-law, his wife and mine. It was only the second or third time I had been there and we were visiting an area of the park in which I had never been before. We were standing on a bridge overlooking a huge gorge, with evergreens and firs blanketing the floor below us. As I looked into the mountainous distance, the word “breathless” took on a whole new meaning; it was so beautiful and awe inspiring that it literally DID take my breath away. My brother-in-law, who later became a pastor in Washington, said something I will probably never forget as long as I live. He said, “Remember that with all its breath-taking beauty, it is still marred and stained by sin.”

The impact of that statement drove home to me the awful significance of man’s far reaching sin, and even to this day, many years later, when I recount this story and think about it, I still want to weep in sorrow. It left a life-long impact on me. What I had viewed, and the beauty I could see, was only a fraction of what God, our Heavenly Father, truly meant for His children to enjoy.

“For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.” — Romans 8:20-21.

This material creation that God Almighty made for us to enjoy, is bound by the same corruption that has ensnared us, and ITS hope is tied to our hope, its freedom will come when we are totally free from corruption! In this day and age when all you hear is argument and debate about the causes of global warming, the pollution overtaking the sea and the earth itself, you can begin to comprehend the far-reaching taint of man’s corruption on an environment that was created for our enjoyment! Now, when you think of that, take into consideration what we have done to the space AROUND our earth. ***As of 5 July 2016, the United States Strategic Command tracked a total of 17,852 artificial objects in orbit above the Earth, however, these are just objects large enough to be tracked.

God has never been pleased with any of His children conforming to the ways of the world system. Read 1 Samuel 8:7-18, where the children of Israel wanted a king, just like other nations. They were in essence rejecting God as their king and leader. There is instance after instance in the Old Testament, as well as in the New Testament, that lets us know of God’s displeasure with mankind’s choices. Unlike what false teachers and false doctrines would try and convey, conformity to this world and its set of values is an indication of spiritual decline, rather than spiritual enlightenment.

The Apostle Paul stated, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” – Romans 12:2.

I have stated it on my Facebook page as well in other lessons that there are teachings going on today that reference the “renewing of your mind,” but not in the Biblical or Scriptural sense, and they are enticing the hearer or reader to “open up your mind” to dream, conceive and believe. They teach that whatever you can make your mind believe, you can actually bring it about to fruition! Some teachers in this are even trying to bring Theoretical Quantum Physics into the equation. The truth is, some of these concepts DO WORK!! (Just don’t forget the science part is theoretical and not proven). Also remember this, the concepts can come under the heading of being NEW, or in many cases, New Age, not even disguised for what they are. The concepts are anything but new, going back before Christianity and even Judaism!

Remember this: “Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”
And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.'”
Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” – Genesis 3:1-5
.

Your mind will be renewed and open and you will be JUST LIKE God, able to create and bring your own desires to fruition. You can have wealth and prosperity, health and wholeness, you will be popular and successful if you can just believe, conceive and dream it!!! In other words, if you can do it yourself, you don’t NEED God! This has been the GREAT lie from the very beginning and sadly there are churches teaching this stuff under the guise of renewed thinking!!!

We have to develop a new mind set, yes, a new way of thinking when we come to God, belong to God and surrender our lives to Him. But, when we accept salvation, redemption, we are not just asking for His forgiveness but also putting our very lives into His hands, giving Him control, knowing that He knows what is best for His children. Our wills become secondary in the knowledge that his will for us is perfection in our lives lasting into eternity! Proverbs 14:12 confirms this by stating, “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.” AND Psalm 37:23-24, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, And He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the LORD upholds him with His hand.”

Jesus, Himself told the disciples, “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where they can be eaten by moths and get rusty, and where thieves break in and steal.”
“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
“And how do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul in the process? Is anything worth more than your soul?” — Matthew 6:19, 24, 16:26 (NLT).

Jesus tried to point out to His disciples that just one soul is worth so much more than all of the world. If you set your sights on winning what the world has to offer, it is often at the expense of losing your soul. You may think you have won or gained something in the short run, but in the eternal scheme of things you will definitely come out the loser.

As Jesus expressed to His disciples, we cannot divide our loyalty, man does not have that ability, and, God does not want anything put before Him for anything that takes priority and precedence becomes an idol, a god in our lives. He has commanded us not to put any gods before Him, and anything we value and esteem more than Him, becomes our god.

We CANNOT love this world and what it offers and LOVE our Heavenly Father. It cannot be done! We trade the pleasures of such a short time for the treasures of an eternity! As a loving Father, He WANTS us to have the true treasures!

Next post we will begin with 1 John chapter 2 verse 16-17.

Independence Day 2018

2 Chronicles 7:
12 Then the LORD appeared to Solomon by night, and said to him: “I have heard your prayer, and have chosen this place for Myself as a house of sacrifice.
13 “When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people,
14 “if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
15 “Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place.
16 “For now I have chosen and sanctified this house, that My name may be there forever; and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually.
17 “As for you, if you walk before Me as your father David walked, and do according to all that I have commanded you, and if you keep My statutes and My judgments,
18 “then I will establish the throne of your kingdom, as I covenanted with David your father, saying, ‘You shall not fail to have a man as ruler in Israel.’
19 “But if you turn away and forsake My statutes and My commandments which I have set before you, and go and serve other gods, and worship them,
20 “then I will uproot them from My land which I have given them; and this house which I have sanctified for My name I will cast out of My sight, and will make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples.
21 “And as for this house, which is exalted, everyone who passes by it will be astonished and say, ‘Why has the LORD done thus to this land and this house?’
22 “Then they will answer, ‘Because they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and embraced other gods, and worshiped them and served them; therefore He has brought all this calamity on them.'”

2 Corinthians 3:16-17, Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

I want to say happy Independence Day to all, but sadly with the state of our nation it wouldn’t be true! Oh don’t get me wrong, I’m not a stick-in-the-mud by any means and I truly due respect and honor this Birthday of the United States of America becoming a sovereign nation. It’s just that in reality it isn’t a “happy” Birthday. At least not with political parties and extremist groups trying to tear it apart from within.

You see, we started out as a great and promising “experiment” as it were. Men of high moral character wanted a new place to practice their religious liberty without the constraints of an oppressive government long before the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were penned. These men wanted to follow after the Lord, God Almighty according to the dictates of their hearts as ascribed to the Bibles they read. They were willing to cross vast and dangerous oceans (at least for their day) to accomplish that goal, and they succeeded. Once they arrived here, they found it wasn’t any more hospitable than the actual journey, but they persevered and it was by the practice of their faith that any of them survived at all leading up to the time when other men of high moral fiber and character chose to break free from the tyranny of a then oppressive government to govern themselves with the very Biblical principles that led them to this land!

Today, we have men and women who no longer share those values or even consider them a viable part of this government. Don’t get me wrong, they want all the freedoms to do what THEY want to do, while restricting others from exercising their rights!

You see, this is ALWAYS the case when LIGHT is shone in and on darkness. The darkness will always flee and try to hide itself from that light. It does NOT want its true nature or ugliness exposed so that everyone who looks will see the true nature. That is the way with darkness, any darkness! So, the way to defeat a nation is to do one of two things; either continue on IN the darkness, hiding from the light, or make it seem like the darkness is the okay thing to do as an okay way of life.

When human nature becomes so self-centered that it is only concerned with what it wants and no one else matters and when it is allowed to continue unabated, it starts to become the “natural” order of things. Soon, this little bit of darkness is considered okay, then that one, then another and another and pretty soon, as has happened in this once blessed United States of America, wrong becomes right and right becomes wrong!

The ONLY thing that has kept this nation afloat to this point in time, 242 years to this date as a nation, have been the prayers of those whom the Heavenly Father calls His children. Oh, don’t get me wrong, to a degree we have to repent for the condition of America the same as anyone and everyone else. But, we have recognized our role in its condition and we have come to the place where we have had to humble ourselves, as the writer of Chronicles states, and have had to repent for not being watchful and vigilant and we have prayed for the Father’s forgiveness and it IS for that reason, why His Mercy and Grace has been poured out upon our land despite the rapid growing wickedness.

You see, I believe for our sakes, everyone of His TRUE children, we have been given a reprieve as it were, but a reprieve only, for a time is coming when there will arise a world leader and the United States of America will not stand in the way of that leader’s plan. The Lord WILL take care of and be with His children as always, and we may even be removed from this part of the situation (speaking of the Rapture) but no matter what happens, God’s children are the ones keeping this country standing and the anti-christ at bay. I do not know what will happen to the U.S. of A. for I am not gifted in future prophecy though as a child and servant of the Lord, I have my suspicions. Except for some vague references in some of the prophetic texts in the Bible, it doesn’t appear that the U.S. is even mentioned, so who knows and this is why all eyes are always looking to the east for what is about to happen.

But, as God’s children AND blessed children at that, to still enjoy the religious and spiritual liberties that we do, what we MUST do is to continue to pray for our leaders, pray that the Holy Spirit will get hold of their hearts and spirits first, and then give them wisdom to act upon what the Spirit is saying to them! We don’t know how much longer we have as a FREE nation, because we can tell by the world’s political and moral season that we ARE in the last days, so we MUST use this freedom to pray for, encourage and support those leaders that exhibit CURRENT moral character (remember the past can be forgiven) and pray for the Holy Spirit’s free reign to move where He deems most appropriate!

We must make our voices heard AGAINST any injustice according to Scripture and not just what we FEEL is an injustice. The Word of God MUST remain the “Lamp to our feet and the Light to our path,” as the Word teaches! (Psalm 119:105). We must continue to have FAITH in God’s ability to see HIS plan fulfilled for the betterment of ALL His children the world over! When we have faith in HIS ability, then we can rest assured we are pleasing Him! (Hebrews 11:6).

REAL freedom, real independence doesn’t come from a document written by men, no matter how spiritual or well-meaning they were. That written document has been and will remain a blessing to those who adhere to it, but REAL freedom comes from the Holy Spirit that resides in each and every one of us who has chosen the Lord Jesus Christ as his King and Ruler. There is no other leader and no other country that can compare.

In closing, as you celebrate America’s Independence, remember that it was the SAME Holy Spirit that resided in those men that inspired the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution so that even these 242 years later, we can still embrace the blessings derived from those liberties!

Jane Goodall loves chimpanzees and spent years in Africa studying the little creatures. A confirmed evolutionist, she delights in any communication, understanding, and affection between herself and the apes. In her book In the Shadow of Man she tells of such an experience. She and a chimp patriarch sat close to each other. Goodall picked up a palm nut and handed it to the chimp. He took it and simultaneously held her hand firmly and gently. Her heart soared. The gentle pressure of his fingers indicated to her that the barrier of untold generations of evolution had been overcome, if only for a few moments.

We get out from life what we expect; often, what we put into it. People satisfy themselves with little when they could have much; with the least, when they could have most; with self, when they could enjoy God. We can choose the results of faith or take the consequences of self-will. We can develop the most inordinate, fleshy appetites, or in surrender to grace find self-control. We make the choice.

I John 2:12-14

1 John 2:12, “I write to you, little children, Because your sins are forgiven you for His name’s sake.”

John, the Beloved Apostle begins to change his tone from the previous verses. He begins by addressing the Christians he’s writing to as part of his family and in the process pointing out each stage of maturity.

This is an important lesson for us as brothers and sisters, because sometimes we forget that we are ALL at different stages of our Christian development and it isn’t dependent upon our natural age or for that matter, the time we have been serving the Lord! The Apostle is reminding us of that in the way he is addressing his Church family.

In this verse he addresses those in the early stages of their maturity. “I write to you, little children,” because he is addressing those that are new to rebirth or the salvation gift. Truly and again no matter our physical age, when we have bowed our heads and asked Christ Jesus to forgive us of all of our sins, and have believed in that promise that we ARE forgiven we are as a babe in the spiritual and have been newly (re)born.

Remember the writer of Hebrews expounded on this principle when he wrote in Hebrews 5:13-14, “For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”

Now granted, the writer of Hebrews was chastising the church for not moving beyond that of a child and that is NOT what the Apostle John is doing here, but rather pointing out the very natural progression of movement in life, even as it applies in the spiritual. He is calling the “little children” in the Church to remember the basics of their childhood, that is, there sins HAVE been forgiven and their salvation IS through Christ Jesus! Newly reborn spiritual children are not expected truly know much more than that.

Here is another aspect also that is hinted at; children can find protection and comfort in the presence of their older family members. Whether it be older brothers and sisters or more mature parental figures. So it is with a child of God. A newly reborn spiritual child should know beyond a shadow of a doubt that those who have been living this spiritual journey ahead of them can be a source of comfort and protection when things start to get a little rough. Often times we think the more mature are just relegated to teaching the younger, when in actuality, they often times need the emotional and natural support while they are learning to walk in this new realm. Remember back to your early days; the enemy was looking to cause you to stumble at every turn. Whatever example drew you to Christ in the Holy Spirit, you still needed examples who continued to walk in the journey the child (in the Lord) is only beginning to walk in.

One other point and it wasn’t meant to be put as a side-note either, but notice the progression in John’s writing. “Because your sins are forgiven you for His name’s sake.” We derive the benefit of forgiveness and redemption. Our salvation was purchased at such a high price and every CHILD of God should remember AND be reminded of that; but John is making another profound statement and that is that we have been forgiven “for His name’s sake!” We WERE forgiven that we might be free, BUT it was also that His name might be glorified and magnified by all who seek redemption; “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” – Acts 4:12.

1 John 2:13, “I write to you, fathers, Because you have known Him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, Because you have overcome the wicked one. I write to you, little children, Because you have known the Father.”

John continues on as he addresses fathers, those that have spiritual maturity, those who have KNOWN in an intimate way our Heavenly Father through the Son of God! Fathers have the advantage of time and experience behind them. They have experienced Christ’s presence whether they walked the natural earth with Him or not. They have not just experienced His presence, but His power and authority as well and they have learned from their experiences.

Any of you who have read my posts notice that I often refer to the Bible as the Living Word of God, for to me, it is so much more, so much deeper than just writing on pages between two covers! Just as it itself expresses it IS the Living Character and Nature of Christ Jesus (the anointed One). It has ALWAYS been this way, even before Jesus came to earth in the fleshly form of a man! His Character and Nature are found throughout the Old Testament and it has ALWAYS been to point man to a relationship with the Father, God Almighty!!

God has ALWAYS, beyond time and space that we can imagine, had a plan for ALL of His creation. It was meant to be written down, by the inspiration AND power of the Holy Spirit so that upon His return to His throne, we ALSO could walk with Him as the disciples and early Apostles did! We, over two thousand years later can still gain experience, power and authority through a relationship, based upon the Character and Nature of Jesus Christ as it is empowered by the Holy Spirit whom Jesus Himself promised would be with us!! We just have to be willing to open the pages held between those two covers and allow His Spirit to commune with our spirit. Remember, John is reminding fathers, that we “have known Him who is from the beginning.”

I have stated this often times before also, and it applies so perfectly here. “Little children” will believe in Him and believe what is taught from those with experience, but “fathers” will KNOW. There is a state within our lives that advances mere belief into KNOWLEDGE. Do not take me wrong, I am NOT belittling the concept of belief in the slightest for it is the basis, the foundation of our faith, but faith, once experienced becomes actual knowledge! Spiritual fathers KNOW the Heavenly Father, they KNOW the Son of God and who He is! They KNOW the presence, power and authority of the Holy Spirit, because of belief evolving into true experiential knowledge!

You will know how the Apostle is addressing you the reader of the Word, by the spiritual level at which you are at. His (the Apostle) is addressing us ALL, at whichever level we are at, for we are as he implies, all part of “the Family of Christ!”

Then the Apostle addresses the young men and you may wonder why he chose this progression; children, fathers, then young men. “Oh to be young again!” so many say even to this day and when I myself look back upon my youth and younger days, I reminisce about the struggles I have been through to get to the place of maturity where I am today! Oh to be on fire; flamed with the passion and strength that comes with youthfulness! I know many of you, my peers have thought exactly the same thing!

But, I would not be where I am in the Lord today, and neither would any of the other fatherly peers I have, if it wasn’t for the trials and testing that we have had to endure and go through to gain the strength and confidence associated with experience in the Lord. Just like physical exercise, meant to keep one healthy and strong as well as confident, so is the spiritual “exercises and endurances” that we must see through to strengthen our spiritual muscles AND our spiritual mind! That is the “plight” of the young men in the Lord upon their journey to spiritual fatherhood (maturity) in the Lord!

But John is applauding the young men, for to be young and strong in the Lord means that you ARE a spiritual WARRIOR in God’s army! You HAVE defeated the wicked one! By the mere means of advancing from the pure milk of the Word to a soldier who can wield the Sword of the Word is a feat of the young and the strong! You are GAINING the experience needed to be a power and an authority in the Holy Spirit!

My Grandson, Tristen joined the U.S. Army when he was just under 18 years old. He was 18 when sent to boot-camp and in a month will turn 20. He joined the Military Police to follow in his father’s footsteps to serve within Law Enforcement and when he joined, he was a strapping young teenager. I can tell you that from the experience he has already garnered, he is no longer just a teen, interested in parties and socializing and “stuff!” He followed a direction he believed was from the Lord and he has stayed focused on that direction and though still a young man today, he has achieved experiences and insights AND confidence that can’t be found in many his age. Needless to say, we are ALL proud!

But what makes us most proud, is to see him develop his skills in continually trusting in the Lord. He’s a young man, he still has questions, he still stumbles from time to time, but all these things, all the trials and what seem to be obstacles are teaching him that he CAN trust the Lord in all things and it is just like the PT (Physical Training) he has to participate in almost every day to make him and keep him strong, alert and confident, so it is with the spiritual PT that the Lord requires of him as a young man. With each exercise, with each trial and obstacle, he is becoming the Spiritual Warrior that Christ Jesus has called him to be! This is the very thing the Apostle John is reiterating and reminding those he has written too!

Now remember, throughout all this, John is not speaking of natural age specifically. He is talking to those of a spiritual age and maturity. The timeline of the spiritual and the natural does not always coincide. A brother of mine asked me the other day if from time to time we can have some face-time because he’s still young in the Lord. Hope I don’t offend him, but he’s not quite as old as I am but yet no young man, age-wise either. He’s been serving the Lord he said for about sixteen years. Well, we each do a lot of blogging, him a lot more than me and the posts he makes and the posts from others he so wisely reposts on his site made me a bit surprised when he said he’d only been serving the Lord for sixteen years!!! Another “confirmation” to me, that what John is writing has no bearing on actual age at all. Spiritually speaking I would argue with anybody that this man is well beyond his “spiritual” years! But then again, that is what a heart that is malleable and soft before the Lord is capable of. If you let Him, the Lord will shape you into what He wants in little to no time at all, if you are surrendered!

John then goes on to write what seems like a reiteration: “I write to you, little children, Because you have known the Father.” There are two possible explanations for why John again writes to those as “little children. First, he is again reminding that though they may not be mature in the Lord yet, one thing they do KNOW and that is the Father, through the sacrifice of Christ Jesus. This is the most popular belief but to stay in context with what is coming in the next verse, I personally do not believe this explanation, though it is of no doctrinal circumstance.

Rather, I believe (because of context) in the second explanation, that the Apostle is NOT writing again to just the “little children,” but rather those he is endeared too and whom he looks upon as family. John is older now, and even though in exile, considers those he is writing to as his close, loving family. So just as a “grandfather” would, he sums up these last two sentences with what amounts to saying, “I write to you, my dear, dear family,” (children, young and mature). Why? “Because you ALL have known the Father (through Christ Jesus)!”

1 John 2:14, “I have written to you, fathers, Because you have known Him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, Because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, And you have overcome the wicked one.”

Now don’t get too excited! It appears that the 14th verse is the same as the 13th verse. Could this be one those “mistakes” so many try to prove are in the Word? Look again. Have you spotted the difference yet? Let me tell you this; John was INSPIRED by the Holy Spirit to put down exactly what the Spirit of God wanted him to write. He KNEW what he was writing! His heart and mind were “moved” on by the Holy Spirit, our promised Guide and Counselor.

Have you seen it yet? A couple of things to bear in mind; repetition helps those who read/study something important to retain it. It means more and, has more of an impact upon the reader. But notice the difference now; in verse 13, John says, “I write to you (fathers, young).” In verse 14, John says, “I have written to you (fathers, young).” This is subtle, oh so very subtle, but it is meant first as a confirmation and a repetition to expound upon the importance of the previous verses. The first written in the present tense, “I write to you,” telling them, instructing them in his very reasoning why he is putting his thoughts to paper. The second, “I have written to you,” to stress the IMPORTANCE of why he is writing! He is saying in no uncertain terms, that what I am saying to you (and what follows) is too important to just skim over or to take lightly!

This is the very reason why I believe that when he penned the last part of the 13th verse he was more or less writing the “prologue” for the next verses to come. FAMILY take note; you KNOW the Father, so listen to what I say next!” When you read and study the Word in context, it takes on a life that becomes clear to those that can spiritually discern. This is why I believe in the second explanation, and understand, this is my personal belief since studying the Word.

Fathers, you have experience that is of value. Young men, you are strong in the Lord and able to fight the good fight. Do not forget these things. Fathers, you can be an inspiration and instructor to those young men who are taking up the Sword of Truth. Young men, look to the fathers for wisdom and instruction. Little children, you know you are safe. You have soldiers to protect and help you on your journey, AND you have fathers who will lead and guide you with the wisdom of the Holy Spirit. EACH of you, avail yourself to those who have experience to get to the next level of maturity.

Just a few simple Scriptures. Easy to read and gloss over, but when taken with some spiritual light shining on them, the wisdom, the inspiration of the Lord’s Hand shines brightly on them!!

One final thought on our place in the Lord:
As fathers we need to be there for one another, to fill in the gaps, where one lacks the other can fill in. This is where real Body Ministry begins to take place. Not all fathers are the same. We may walk with a higher level of maturity, but we are not all Apostles, we are not all Prophets, we are not all Pastors or Teachers. We need to fill the place that the Holy Spirit has placed us in and equipped us for, and, we need to do so with love and concern for those that are quickly coming behind us, looking to our experience and example.

Do you know where you stand? If you do, then take the steps that the Lord has established for you. Remember Psalm 37:23-24, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, And He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the LORD upholds him with His hand.”

The Lord is delighted in the steps you take when you take the ones that He has set before you! Do not be afraid or doubt, for even when we stumble, and we all do, it is again, the Lord and His strength that holds us up!!

Next post we will begin with 1 John chapter 2 verse 15.

I John 2:9-11

1 John 2:9, “He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now.”

As the Apostle is apt to do, he is reiterating what he has put down in the previous verses and in this instance is comparing darkness to hate as it is in reality. Remember previously he stated as found in 1 John 1:6, “If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.” He is showing the truth that when you hate your brother, it is exactly the same and is in essence “walking” in darkness. In darkness, we as people are blind. Simple yet full of truth.

Just as our relationship to sin and/or obedience is a measure of our fellowship with God, so is our love for God’s people; if we say we are in the light, yet hate our brother, our claim to fellowship with God Who IS light (1 John 1:5) is hollow – but the one who does have love for his brother does demonstrate that he abides in the light and is NOT stumbling about blind.

Any of you who have followed my teachings on love, have seen me write or heard me speak time and time again that love is the opposite or lack of (in demonstration and action) selfishness or as a dear brother once pointed out, selflessness. True, Godly, Agape love, is putting aside one’s own self aside for that of another. That is the example that our Heavenly Father showed us by sending His Son and the example Christ Jesus demonstrated by laying down on the Cross for OUR sinfulness and unrighteousness. I have stated it many times before and I’m sure you think I’m a broken record, but the love the Bible, the Living Word of God talks about is not a/the feeling, but rather the actions, the demonstrations we show one to another!

But now, keeping that in mind, I want to exhort a bit on hate. Again, the world and those devoid of spiritual discernment consider hate to be a feeling, an intense dislike for another. In the spiritual realm, the feelings always FOLLOW one’s actions, but in the world or in the natural realm, people try and rely or trust in their “feelings” first and apply their actions based on those feelings! This is one of the many reasons why the world we live in is so messed up. A spiritually enlightened person can still love someone despite how they feel and they can hate the same sin that God abhors, without denying love to the person who sins; just as God, Himself did for each of us who have accepted His gracious Gift!

Now if love is the absence of selfishness or selflessness, than it stands to reason that hate is the preferring one’s own self above the concerns of another. Hate is not always an action of doing, but can also be considered an action of abstaining from doing. I don’t want to jump the gun so to speak but 1 John 3:17 speaks on this. So does, James 2:14-16, when speaking of us having faith: “What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit?” James states that faith without works is dead, of no value, but we can say it the same way without losing any impact or changing the Scriptures if we state, “faith without love is dead!” Again, love IS works, it is action! Hate is lack of action when the need is clear. This is NOT a contradiction, but rather emphasizing and confirming what others have taught in their writings.

With these perspectives in mind, you can understand why John likens and compares hate with darkness. When you only care about yourself, your own condition, you become oblivious, blinded to the circumstances and needs of others around you. This simple, single short verse is powerful in all of its connotations!

I guess you can also add the question, “who exactly is your brother?” But I am here to tell you that if you see someone, anyone in your circle of influence in need AND you have the means to help them, NOT doing so is the same as NOT doing so for Jesus Himself! Jesus spoke this as found in Matthew 25:40, “And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.'”

The enemy has done an amazing job in this day and age to blinding people to the true meaning of both love AND hate. We have become so involved with our “feelings” so much so that the very nature of what love and hate truly are escapes many of us and sadly this goes to many who claim to be Christians. The REAL disciples of Christ Jesus, those that truly follow His Words and His examples do not lack in this understanding! As John spoke in previous verses, this is not a NEW commandment in that it is still as it was from the beginning, but our understanding, since Christ Jesus has come and shone His LIGHT upon the truth has revealed to us who follow Him the “newness” and the true depth of what love and thereby, what hate truly is!

1 John 2:10, “He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him.”

In this verse the Apostle is using the inverse of the previous verse. Now understand something here; you will find this grammar technique found throughout the Bible and I believe with my whole heart, the Holy Spirit inspired it to be written that way so the reader will have to give it some thought and take it to heart. Many times you will find this written out literally and other times it is to be assumed, but it is a style that can’t be glossed over when read, it is meant to cause one to think. An example I am always using in my teaching of this grammatical style can be found in Hebrews 11:6, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” In the inverse, it can than be correctly assumed that “to walk in faith it IS POSSIBLE to please, our Father in Heaven!” If without it is impossible, than with, it is possible!

In other words, “if you love your brother you abide and walk in the light,” but – “if you do not love your brother you are blind and walking in darkness.” This has the effect in the person who is studying the Word of God, to reaffirm the truth and allows us to consciously apply it to our practical lives. Remember, the Word of God isn’t just something to use to memorize for the sake of memorization but rather we take it in to apply it to our lives. This is the very thing that makes it alive and growing within our renewed spirits.

Christians in other words, can NOT sit on the proverbial fence, so to speak. It is very important in our everyday lives that we evaluate through prayer and meditation our standing in relation to those around us and especially our brothers and sisters in the Lord. I heard someone many years ago preach on this and a statement they made has never been far from my heart and this relates to God, our Heavenly Father as well as those around us; “No relationship, is STILL a relationship!” When we see those around us and make no move in one direction or another towards their circumstances or situations as discussed in the previous verse, it is called by another word, apathy. Apathy can be summed up as a negative, selfish or self-centered relationship; one that is concerned only with yourself as an individual and no one or anything around you. This again is what John refers to as walking in darkness, or hating.

Another point in this verse; when we truly walk in the light that shines before us motivated by real love, there is no way to stumble or to cause stumbling. If one stumbles, whether yourself or another, then they are not focusing on the Light that shines forth from Christ within us! The ONLY way someone can stumble is if they are focused on the darkness and trip over the obstacles that are littered in the dark! Remember this from the Psalmist, “Thy word is a lamp to my feet, And a light to my path.” – Psalm 119:105 (*NASB).

I’ve not only seen this illustration before but have experienced it; when you light a little stick match in a darkened cave, the walls around you light up with that little flicker! It is amazing how God Almighty, our Heavenly Father can give us just a little light (though His light in us shines like a beacon) and it chases what once blinded us, the darkness, completely away!! Darkness NEVER quashes the light, but light will ALWAYS chase away the darkness!

1 John 2:11, “But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.”

Some would tell you that John is consistently using circular reasoning, but he is not! To deny this point that he continues to reiterate is what from the very beginning has caused division and discontent within the church-world. This concept of walking in love, in the Light of Christ, the Living Word is so important that it needs to be constantly and consistently reinforced within each of us who claim to be disciples of Christ Jesus!

My father-in-law, who was much more a father, when he got to the point in his hard-lived life where he started to surrender more and more to the working of the Holy Spirit made a comment that I cannot even to this day contradict and it goes right to the heart of what the Beloved Apostle John is trying to make a strong argument for. My father-in-law was a Navy man through and through and had seen not just combat, but horrific situations stemming out of that military conflict. He didn’t like to talk about it much as the memories truly did haunt him. But this is what he used to say from observations of those who liked to parade their “Christianity” without the deep-seated love that identifies a true Christian: “Christians are the only soldiers or warriors he has ever witnessed that will when in battle and see another injured will go and deliberately kill or try to kill the injured one.” He used to compare it to that old adage of “kicking a man when he’s down!”

You know, thinking of that even all these years after he went on to be with the Lord, STILL brings tears to my eyes, for though he witnessed horrific battle in the natural, he also witnessed it in the spiritual. Sadly, this is a scene that even today is easy to pick up on. But I submit this to you, my reader, in the light of John’s lesson; those that actually do “kick a brother (or sister) when they are down” are NOT walking in the light as John has written, but rather walking in the darkness and are BLIND to those things around them.

Have your ever considered this? In the spiritual realm, unlike in the natural world, there is NO gray area. There is NO middle road. You are either walking in the light or living in the darkness. You are either demonstrating love or expressing by actions or inactions, hate!

Consider this that the Apostle Paul wrote, Philippians 3:13, “Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” If you are stumbling around in the darkness, allowing apathy and hate to blind you, how CAN you be pressing forward towards the ultimate prize?

In closing this lesson let me remind you of something I have taught in many lessons in the past; God has blessed you and created within you the ability and the freedom, the liberty as it were, to choose! He has not, nor ever will take away your free will or your ability to make decisions based wholly upon your own choosing. We KNOW what the Light consists of and the benefits associated with it, we KNOW the clarity with which it gives our vision, both spiritual AND in the natural. We know the outcomes of willingly being blinded and trying to walk around in the dark. As the Apostle John has so aptly put forth, the choice and the direction is totally up to each of us as individuals. I CHOOSE to be a disciple of Christ Jesus and though not perfect, I am striving and willing to strive toward that end, it is the ONLY wise thing to do.

Next post we will begin with 1 John chapter 2 verse 12.

Some Spiritual Practicalities

I was looking through my notes on messages I have wanted to teach on and ran across this one that I actually meant to post some time ago. As with all things though, when you “try” to serve the Lord and follow His Holy Spirit, His timing is always best. What made this stand out is that as I was reading various Blogs today, a theme of spiritual battle seemed to be threading its way in many of the articles I read. So, when I seen this one, still unused, I had to address it for very practical reasons. Remember, the Scriptures are a guide to us and it isn’t just a matter of reading them, or memorizing them, but actually applying them into our lives. Well, here is one of those very real practical reasons!

I want to share something with all of you that you may be experiencing or may have experienced from time to time and especially as you continue to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit in your service to the Lord and to His creation.

Now, understand that this is from my experience and the experiences from some of my peers over the years as we have discussed this among ourselves. I can’t say I have any Scriptures to back this up although I have many in mind that COULD be used, I just shy away from trying to make the Scriptures fit my “theories” rather than my experiences lining up with Scripture.

From comments and emails I have receive, many of you may have noticed that after an extremely worshipful day, or a time when you wrote something that seemed to come from your very core, your inner spirit, that you felt you needed to take a couple days to yourself, or a day or so from writing. Especially those who blog, you may have brought out something that you have done in the past to keep your posts going, or you just feel you need to take a short break from the Blog itself.

Now I would imagine that several of you who are still teaching/preaching from the pulpit can attest to this fact and you may already know what I am going to bring up. The truth of the matter is that when we surrender ourselves to the will of the Lord through the leading of the Holy Spirit, it is an “unnatural” thing to do in the sense that our flesh, the human nature is always fighting with our spiritual side to gain ascendance. It is a battle we will fight until the Lord calls us home to be with Him! Indeed, it is a real battle that goes on.

The flesh IS weak, there is no question for those of you who have been serving the Lord for some time. We can be strong in the spirit because of the Holy Spirit equipping us as vessels to complete what His will is. We see this in a real-life situations where there appears to be a oneness with the messages being taught from day to day. It is obvious if you read various blogs that there is at times a definite thread or theme that the Lord is putting forth for all those He has led to those posts! Remember, these lessons are still there and working in those whom the Lord brings to read each of those posts; HIS job is not finished, whereas ours is laid out in print already.

I learned this years ago when I started teaching from behind the pulpit and especially as I spent time in prayer and meditation in preparation for the lesson/message. The day after, I was always wiped out (it seemed both mental and physical) and the thing is, I noticed it especially as I also had a full-time secular job as well. It was all I could do at times to get through the next couple of days after delivering an anointed message. Mind you, I didn’t hit the “anointed” mark every time, but that was my goal and the more prayer and meditation went into a message, the more it seemed to mentally and physically take a lot out of me.

I had and have since those early times, talked with Pastors and teachers about it and the response, I guess not so surprising, was varied. Some definitely knew what I was referring too and others thought it might be all in my head!! (And that’s to put it ever so nicely!).

The truth is our flesh is in a constant state of warfare against our spirit (according to many of the Apostles writings) and when our spirit wins, the flesh feels it. Now as time and experience go by, it doesn’t affect you quite as much, because like a soldier or an athlete, you become more conditioned with time, but it DOES affect you none-the-less. I guess that is why when I did talk with so many of my peers, brothers and sisters, that some were aware of the situation and some had never given it any thought. This is why in the past when the Lord would bring someone my way to disciple, I always made it a part of my teaching so they would be prepared if it did happen to them, and I have only met one other Pastor/Minister who ever mentioned it to those he was shepherding.

Part of it goes hand in hand with the way the flesh is, but also the way the enemy tries to attack after what could be considered a spiritual victory. It is one of the reasons why we need as servants/ministers of the Lord to remember the danger of pride and/or arrogance. The enemy of our souls will latch on to that faster than anything and this is something that many who are leading a congregation, whether it be teaching, leading worship or doing the actual preaching, probably experience when so many want to congratulate you on a good service.

I shared something with a brother from another Blog that I follow, that I have kept on my desk for years, and it helps me to remember that I am JUST the vessel. I am the messenger and NOT the message!

It goes like this:

RELIGION says: I do the work, I get the credit and God accepts it!

CHRISTIANITY says: God does the work, God gets the credit and I accept it!

It is the difference between recognizing our place in the Lord and protecting ourselves against pride and remaining humble in our service to others. As true ministers/servants of the Word, we do what the Holy Spirit leads us to do (and this applies to any ministry/spiritual gift!) and the Holy Spirit does the work. He leads those whom He wants blessed/served and HE and HE alone works on their hearts! Man in general, the flesh does NOT want to accept that. That is where surrender has to be willingly given to the Lord. That is where true Godly Love comes into play in real demonstration and action. You love the Lord and you love those you are serving!

So, I just want you to know that it IS the natural order of things that when you have fought in the spirit, there is a time needed for refreshing. Jesus constantly took Himself aside from the disciples after spiritual warfare, whether He was speaking to the crowds or feeding the crowds and in see it in the examples listed in the Gospels so that He COULD be in communion with His Father, and we need at times to follow that same example. Don’t be upset or concerned if you have that “after-victory let-down” for a day or so. Your spirit is alive and rearing to go, but the flesh is saying, “hold on a minute!” Jesus touched on this in the Garden of Gethsemane when He stated to Simon Peter, “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” – Mark 14:38.

This also brings me to another point I want to make and it’s about temptation, though my main goal here is to encourage you if you feel weak after a victory; remember, the enemy will use victorious times to ALSO tempt you. In the flesh we ARE weak after a victory but also susceptible to pride; it is a perfect time to stay on your guard, for as Peter has written, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.” – 1 Peter 5:8-9. I am sure he may have been thinking back to that Garden incident when he wrote these verses!

The more intimate you become with the Lord and the more surrendered you are, the more you DO, the more you may sense the battle but also the stronger you will become. Don’t let the enemy beat you over the head with false accusations about how weak you are, in the flesh, we KNOW just how weak we are. Our strength IS and ALWAYS will be in the Lord!! Remember this passage from one of my favorite Epistles of the Bible, the Apostle John writes in 1 John 4:4b, “because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.” My prayer, my hope is that as you continue to serve you recognize the awesome blessings of total surrender.

In closing I want to leave you with some words of the Apostle Paul that are also fitting in these types of circumstances:

2 Corinthians 4:16-18, “Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”

God bless greatly, all you who continue to persevere and continue to serve the Lord AND others despite how you may feel! LOVE is NEVER untimely!!

My Cup Has Overflowed

poeticpraisehdr

My Cup Has Overflowed

I’ve never made a fortune, and it’s probably too late now.
But I don’t worry about that much, I’m happy anyhow
And as I go along life’s way,
I’m reaping better than I sowed.
I’m drinking from my saucer,
Cause my cup has overflowed.

Haven’t got a lot of riches,
and sometimes the going’s tough
But I’ve got loving ones all around me,
and that makes me rich enough.
I thank God for his blessings,
and the mercies He’s bestowed.
I’m drinking from my saucer,
Cause my cup has overflowed.

I remember times when things went wrong,
My faith wore somewhat thin.
But all at once the dark clouds broke,
and the sun peeped through again.
So Lord, help me not to gripe,
about the tough rows I have hoed.
I’m drinking from my saucer,
Cause my cup has overflowed.

If God gives me strength and courage,
When the way grows steep and rough.
I’ll not ask for other blessings,
I’m already blessed enough.
And may I never be too busy,
to help others bear their loads.
Then I’ll keep drinking from my saucer,
Cause my cup has overflowed.

Obstacles – Overcoming

anecdotal stories
1 Kings 20:26-27, At the turn of the year, Ben-hadad mustered the Arameans and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel. The sons of Israel were mustered and were provisioned and went to meet them; and the sons of Israel camped before them like two little flocks of goats, but the Arameans filled the country.

Acts 4:13, Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus.

Overcoming Obstacles

Calvin Peete leaped a number of obstacles to become a pro golfer: he was black, he had only an eighth-grade education, he didn’t swing a club until he was twenty-three, and he had a crooked arm that limited distance when he swung. No matter. He won anyway, finishing ten times in the PGA’s top ten.

The late Wilma Rudolph had an obstacle so basic to a runner she shouldn’t have been able to run: as a child she had contracted chronic pneumonia, scarlet fever, and polio. She wore braces until she was ten years old. No matter. In the 1960 Olympiad she won gold medals in the one hundred- and two hundred-meter races and in the four hundred-meter relay.

Booker T. Washington stated it well: “I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position one has reached in life as by the obstacles overcome while trying to succeed.” Indeed, some people face life laden with as many chains as Marley’s ghost, but their achievements belie their difficulties. That is why we cannot judge a person’s achievements purely on evident progress or success. Some may be only at the starting position when others are five miles into the race. More is expected of a person who as the advantage of “starting ahead” in life or from those especially gifted. Those who continue in the race, despite shortcomings, may not place as highly, but the effort to compete compensates for their lesser showing.

Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens. I John 2:7-8

1 John 2:7, “Brethren, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard from the beginning.”

The Apostle starts out with the familial Brethren, which in some translations reads the endearing, Beloved. In either case he is writing with that same fatherly sense that he is well-known for. He continues to endear himself to the reader before diving into the more serious aspect of his discourse. He is reminding them, in that specific word, just how much he does love and care for, as it was reserved for those closest to his heart. There is a lot packed into this one sentence that continues the thoughts of the previous verses.

John is also laying the foundation, or the ground-work for what is to come next in that one word that denotes a love for those he is writing too. So he goes on to clarify; he is NOT writing some new commandment that the readers don’t already know. They SHOULD know, that what he is and will continue to speak about is nothing new at all. In fact, he goes on to reiterate that what he will share with them is something they have heard from and been taught from the very beginning! There will be and should be no surprises.

You may wonder why John has such a habit of almost repeating or reinforcing what he has written with what he is about to write, but we need to remember that there was a sect of the religious population called the Gnostics that the Apostles were all trying to contend with concerning the Gnostic teaching. The Gnostics were always so proud of their claims that their teachings were always new and insightful. Gnostics believed that the material world, that which can be felt, seen etc., is inherently evil and the way to true salvation is to look inward to your inner spirit to find the “spark” of salvation, so to speak. It gets a lot more in-depth as we see its transformations into modern times, but in essence denied the sacrifice of Christ Jesus as a true means to salvation.

The Apostle John is therefore reiterating that what the readers have learned and that what he plans on continuing to teach them is NOT new, but something that have learned over time from the beginnings of their teachings in Christ.

This brings me to some personal thoughts about the way many of us who are called into the ministry, teach. It doesn’t matter what title you as a teacher hold either, but the Holy Spirit’s inspiration is usually very noticeable in the fact that we are constantly reminding those we teach, that it isn’t new what we are teaching, but we expound again and again, building upon the original foundation. I learned years ago, and of all places the technical school that I went too, to learn a trade, that repetition is the best form of teacher and so it is when it comes to Bible study and learning! The student becomes more confident and more assured of what they are learning when there is a foundation laid and we are reminded of that foundation as we lay new “bricks of knowledge.”

In this day and age, as it probably was during John’s lifetime, there is a danger of getting away from what we learned in the beginning, getting away from what might be considered the basics and without that foundation, there is a danger that we lose sight of what is true and truth. All we have to do today, is watch the news, to look around us, and see how church leaders and congregations are adopting “new” ideas and abandoning what was once KNOWN to be truth! People have discarded the Living Word of God, the Bible as the absolute truth to inject what they have seen by going inward and seeking the “truths” from their inner spirit-guides! The battle of the Gnostics has not abated and is still going on today, but today, many of them still CLAIM to be Christians!!! It is no wonder those blinded by the world and the enemy, look at those who claim to be Christians and only see hypocrites. I know I touched on it in the last lesson, but not every one who claims to be a Christian is a true disciple of Christ Jesus! Sad, but oh so true.

This is one of the main reasons many of the Apostles and especially John repeat over and over some of the same concepts, so that the readers know and are reminded of the foundation on which they are being taught.

And then the Apostle seems to contradict himself:

1 John 2:8, “Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining.”

Even though this commandment of loving others is not new, in at least one sense it is. Jesus said this in Matthew 5:17, “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.” You see, Jesus whole teaching was that the Law was meant to teach, but the Pharisees and the other religious leaders had so twisted it as to make everyone believe they had to obey every single line of that Law. If anything the Law was teaching us that within ourselves there was absolutely NO way in which to fulfil it. Jesus was telling His disciples that we couldn’t obey and fulfill it, but He could and that is what was new!

In and of ourselves, even though we were taught it from the beginning, we couldn’t love like we were supposed to, commanded to do! But that is the very reason Jesus came; to show us how through Him, who DID fulfill the Law, we could obtain that same ability. John is making it clear that even though the “Law” of love isn’t new, but from the very beginning, in the sense of Christ Jesus, it IS new!

As a side note; if you ever get to believing that the Scriptures contradict themselves as so many who have no spiritual discernment claim, remember that in every case it has to be the way WE, individually are looking at those Scriptures. With a little prayer and seeking guidance from the Holy Spirit Who WILL open our spiritual eyes, all will be made clear to us!

This was written by John also, “Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” – John 8:12. The Apostle John is again reminding us of this fact of which he wrote just a bit earlier in his life.

The newness of the commandment is in truth found in Christ Jesus Who IS the Light! The darkness is already diminishing because the Light has come into the world! Whenever men receive this truth and are able through the Gift of Christ Jesus, love as the Father commanded us too, then the light is also shining in us. This part of John’s writing isn’t just stating a fact, “the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining.” It is also very prophetic, for in truth because of Christ Jesus, the light is already shining and because this is the newness of the old commandment, the light will continue to shine brightly into the future!!! How AMAZING is that?!

The Light of Christ’s love is passed down from the True Vine to the branches, which then produces the fruit of love for others to see, witness and partake of! The old commandment that we should love one another has become reality in action because through Christ Jesus Who fulfilled the Law, we can now ALL demonstrate the reality of God’s true love!!! What an awesome thought!

One last thought; notice that the Bible, written by Holy Spirit inspired men of God, always spoke of love as a verb, an action, something that is to be done either towards God Himself and towards one another. Only when we have the Light of Life, Christ Jesus residing in our hearts can we and do we recognize this vast difference between the world’s definition of love and God’s!

Next post we will begin with 1 John chapter 2 verse 9.

I John 2:5-6

1 John 2:5, “But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.”

Whenever you see the word “but,” or many times in the Bible, “therefore,” you always know the writer is continuing a thought put to pen right before the one you are reading, and it usually comes with a clarification or an affirmation.

In this sentence, John is completing what he started in verse 4; “He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.” BUT — whoever DOES keep His Word, the love of God is perfected in him. You see, the Apostle is making it clear that despite those who say one thing and do another, when you are IN God and you do what you say, God’s love is perfected in you!

I want to make clear something else that is a bit contrary to what has been taught over the years. When people read this fifth verse or they hear it taught, many, many times it is being taught that YOUR love for God is then being perfected, by your demonstration of keeping and obeying His Word. I am not saying this is not true to a very minor extent, but rather the emphasis is on God’s love for us and our knowledge of that. When we keep God’s Word, it demonstrates that we have knowledge, not just a basic belief, for that knowledge is perfected along with God’s love within us giving us more confidence and more assurance in our walk.

As in all things, as stated in the previous lesson, “practice does make perfect,” but God’s love is already within us to more than we can or do realize. By demonstrating His Word in our lives, our knowledge of that love that God gives us is being perfected, far beyond simply just believing.

When you talk with your friends, family and acquaintances about things that you or they like to do, the ones that are the most confident and apt to continue in that conversation are those who have a keen and expansive knowledge of the subject you are discussing. While some may believe what you are telling them, there are those that KNOW what you are talking about.

So it is with keeping the Words and commandments of God. The proof of our knowledge of His love within us is in the confidence and assurance with which we walk day in and day out in that love that is in our hearts and souls. Thus, that confidence and assurance of that knowledge is confirmed, “By this we know that we are in Him.” Notice again, and I know I harp on this a lot, but notice the Apostle didn’t write, “by this we BELIEVE that we are in Him.” Rather again, it is perfected in our KNOWING, our knowledge, thus it shows in how we conduct ourselves.

The reason I spend so much time on the difference between believing and knowledge is the confidence, the assurance, the strength that it gives the individual when life throws its storms our way. The enemy has a harder time penetrating the armor of an individual who KNOWS something emphatically as compared to someone who is still learning the extent of the truth by just believing. Also, a word of caution to those who may be trying to digest what I am saying; in this instance do not confuse the concept of FAITH with the believing that I am expounding on. Believing in this case is trusting what someone may say and walking in that trust until you have the knowledge beyond doubt within yourself that it is right and true. Faith is a form of believing but it will ALWAYS transcend mere believing for Faith is a spiritual gift given to every believer in some measure by God our Father, (Romans 12:3).

What we do with that measure of faith determines how much it grows and multiplies. Faith WILL grow and multiply the more we use it and walk in it. It is also the one gift that allows us to actually PLEASE our Heavenly Father, (Hebrews 11:6). Believing however, whether in something or in a concept doesn’t grow and multiply, but rather as stated time and again, it transforms into knowledge, something that in the users mind becomes undeniable fact!

So, by the fact that we KEEP His Word and demonstrate it in our everyday walk, we KNOW, we have factual knowledge that we are in Him, because HIS love has been perfected in us!! What an amazing sentence, just full of blessing and assurances!!!

1 John 2:6, “He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.”

Now comes one of the things that causes me great consternation and alarm in this day and age in which we live, and I will expound on that in just a moment. John is saying here, simply stated, “if we say WE abide in Him, Christ Jesus, then we ought to walk, or to act and demonstrate His character just as He did and still does.” Simple and to the point.

Here’s my pet peeve. Everybody today is a Christian, just about. You can take a survey in the U.S. and probably, (it has been done) about 84% of the population describe themselves as Christians. Why then is the U.S. just about ready to crumble as a nation? We have more ungodly and corruption in the public eye than ever in U.S. history if not in the world. We had a recent Presidential candidate that stated unequivocally that they were the person they were today because of their knowledge and understanding of the Bible, a person who has been proven countless times to continue to lie, manipulate and deceive. Yet, they believe they are a Christian!

Don’t get me wrong, Christians are NOT perfect, but by the same token, we STRIVE NOT to live the life that we formerly lived. Are you aware, that the term Christian, was only used to acknowledge the disciples of Christ Jesus and that acknowledgement came from non-believers? It was first applied to the disciples of Jesus in Antioch (Acts 11:26). Even when Peter used it in his Epistle, found in 1 Peter 4:16, he was talking about those that suffer under the title of Christian, to do so gracefully and with honor.

In truth, it was the world that labeled the disciples of Jesus Christ as Christians. They certainly had no clue that the title, Christ, meant anointed one for in most cases the word Christian was used in derision. The term Christ, contrary to what many believe is not Jesus’ last name or even used as Mr., or Dr., but rather is a title referring to WHO He is. He is Jesus, the Anointed One (from God) or as I like to write much of the time, Christ Jesus, (The Anointed One, Jesus). As stated it refers to WHO He is and is a title of respect and adoration. He IS Jesus, the Son of God, Who came as the Messiah to man, the Anointed One of God!

So what is to show the world that those of us who are labeled Christian are any different from what the world claims to begin with? Again, John said it simply and to the point, “If you SAY you abide in Him, then you ought to ACT like Him!” (Paraphrased).

The Bible is our Guidebook. It is our Roadmap that shows us the way back to a relationship with our Heavenly Father but that can only be obtained through Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. It is the written Word, showing us the character and nature of the Living Word, Jesus Christ. If we want to know His character and nature and how we are to emulate that same character and nature, then we find it in the Living Word, the Bible! You won’t find His nature, His personality in the wisdom of the world. Contrary to popular belief, many roads do NOT lead to Him for the inspired Word tells us, “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” – Matthew 7:13-14.

You might be thinking to yourself right about now that Pastor Roland is starting to hit on the legalistic, bordering on legalism. But remember, John made it clear in verse four, we keep His word not out of obligation or even obedience, but out of the perfected knowledge that His love is within us and THAT is what drives and motivates us!

Let me explain something about that word, abide. This word means to stand steadfast, to be grounded as solid as a rock, so to speak. Nothing can cause a person who abides to waver; not storms, not obstacles, nothing. As we draw closer and closer to God our Father, through our relationship with Jesus the Son, and empowered by the Holy Spirit we become more and more one with Him. Is it any wonder that the Scriptures speak so much of the oneness of the Body of Christ with Christ Himself at the head. To be one with Christ as Christ was one with the Father encompasses abiding in Him.

Remember Jesus making the analogy of being the Vine and we are the branches. The branches have to be a part or one with the vine itself. But if you walk through a vineyard what do you see? You see all the branches moving out from the vine. The more you step back and look upon the field, you see a mass of green, you can’t tell the branches from the vine. You recognize it as a vineyard, but the branches have all become one with one another because they all abide in the parent vine! That is abiding. Plain and simple.

If we abide in Him, truly abide, we are going to look like Him, act like Him, talk like Him. People will see the vine. The branches of a vine don’t move off on their own and decide they are going to produce raspberries. They produce the very thing that the vine causes them to produce. So it is when we truly abide in Him.

Now this brings something else up that has been so misinterpreted and so taken out of context in our church-world today, the concept of judging! You will find very well-meaning Christians tell you that no matter what, you are not to judge; but —- there are specifics given in the Word of God and if you take the WHOLE counsel of God then you have to STUDY the Word and not just gloss over it today! I know that with our hectic and furious lifestyles, it is hard to spend time, but time must be made for you are not talking about the mere 80 years you might live on the Earth, but you are preparing for an eternity that will never end. Think of the time you spend now as preparation for that which is much grander to come!

Read ALL of Matthew 7 and you will see the first part that states do not judge, is stating that we do not have the right
to condemn or sentence to death another; but the second half tells us TO judge, to discern what is false as compared to what is true and right. Now with that in mind, consider this, if you know how Jesus was, if you know how He talked about circumstance and situations, and how He presented Himself to others in circumstances and situations and you see someone walking and talking totally opposite to what you KNOW Jesus would do or how He would be, you don’t have to judge, because the facts, the truth is playing out right before your eyes! If someone acts and talks opposite of how Jesus did, then they CAN’T be a part of Him as the ABIDING branch because that person is only going to produce the exact same fruit as the Vine in which he abides! That’s not judgment, that is truth as compared to falsehood. John was trying to make sure the believers were 100% confident and sure about this.

The Lord wants us to be strong in our knowledge and understanding of Who He is and to understand that to abide in Him, brings us strength, confidence and assurance to move forward in a world that doesn’t want us to walk in Him!

Next post we will begin with 1 John chapter 2 verse 7.

I John 2:3-4

1 John 2:3, “Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.”

Have any doubts that you are a Christian, a true follower of Christ Jesus? Any doubts that you are a true believer, born-again, spirit-renewed, a new creature in Christ, as the Apostle Paul states? – (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Are you keeping Christ’s commandments? If you can say yes, that you are purposefully attempting to obey the commandments of Jesus, then you can KNOW that you know Him, truly KNOW Him! For those that might be confused about obeying commandments and thinking that just possibly I am speaking of obeying the Law as given to the Children of Israel, let me assure you, I am not. I am not trying to rob you of your freely given grace and demanding you walk again according to the Law.

What I do want to remind you of is something that I speak of very predominately in my teaching, and it is found in Matthew 22:35-40, “Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus said to him,” ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” Remember that Jesus said earlier in Matthew that He came not to destroy the Law, but to fulfill it. – (Matthew 5:17). In essence, Christ Jesus, is the embodiment of these two commandments!

These two “commandments” encompass everything that Christ Jesus stands for and came to share with His disciples. If we love God, our Heavenly Father with ALL that we are and we love one another, those that are around us on a daily basis, then we are following, obeying His commandments. Jesus spoke it so that even a child, which we are to be like, could understand the simplicity of the command it! It’s another reason why the Beloved Apostle wrote in the first verse, “My little children.” – (1 John 2:1).

“We know that we know Him.” Notice that this portion of scripture speaks of one who has matured to the point of knowledge. That knowledge is much more than simple belief. A belief, however strong can eventually be shattered, but knowledge is a thing of factual substance.

When we as Christians can progress beyond the realm of only believing and into the realm of knowing, of absolute certainty, our faith will then know no bounds. My youngest son was the one who really brought this to my attention quite a few years ago. He had been talking with a fellow employee who was reiterating to a small group of people what she believed about a certain scripture on faith. My son asked her a couple of questions based on the scriptures that he was familiar with, and it left his fellow employee, this “believer” struggling to find an answer she was comfortable with. It had to do with faith in the certainty of God’s Word. He told her that when she passes the stage of just believing to the point of knowing for a certainty, of knowing for a FACT, then nothing will frustrate or sway her.

It definitely got me to thinking about our relationship with the Father through His Son as we mature. We SHOULD grow in stature in the Lord. Paul said it and so did many of the other Apostles. We must constantly change to become more like Christ. Believing only can make us appear to be like Christ, but knowing, actually being grounded in the FACT, makes our hearts and minds much more like Christ Jesus, the Anointed One.

That is why the first part of this scripture is so important. We can come to a point where it is no longer a matter of believing in Christ but rather a knowledge of Him, after all remember that the Apostle James wrote that the demons believe in Him and they aren’t changed. – (James 2:19). That absolute certainty, that KNOWING Him comes from intimacy with Him.

It is almost like circular reasoning, yet it is the effect from the cause. When we come to Christ Jesus and surrender our lives, our wills to Him, we WANT, we desire to do what He would have us do. As we continue to obey His commandments, obey HIM, we get to actually KNOW Him so much more intimately. As we get to know Him more intimately, we want to obey Him more!

I also want to caution believers and especially in the day and age we live today. With the access to so much historical information and knowledge, it is so very easy to “believe” in the historical Jesus, that part of God that walked this world and left such an imprint. We are talking about (and this is why you see me use the term so much) the Christ, the Anointed One of God Almighty, that aspect, that attribute of Jesus that is God’s Son!

Part of John’s reason for writing to the Christians of his day was to refute the Gnostics that were preaching falsehoods. The Gnostics pretended to have much spiritual knowledge, but their knowledge left them in possession of all their bad passions and unholy habits; they, therefore, gave no proof that they had known either God or his Son Jesus, nor is ANY man properly acquainted with God, who is still under the power of his own sins. If you observe the way of the world today and the attitude of man, you see that the same falsehood is still rearing its ugly head. It never really went away, it just stayed dormant for a time. After all, many recent polls in the United States say that a minimum of 84% of its citizens “believe” they are Christians, because they believe “in a god of some sort!” If it were true that the U.S. was comprised of this many ACTUAL Christians, this country would not be in the severe state of chaos and corruption that it faces today!

To truly know God, in the scriptural sense of the words, as the Apostle John is writing, is to have an INTIMATE acquaintance and communion with him as our Father AND Friend. Such knowledge and fellowship are always connected with sincere obedience. When this is lacking, the mere professing of knowing God is an evident falsehood. So, here is how we do know that we know him, the evidences that we have a saving knowledge of Christ is loyal obedience to his commandments.

1 John 2:4, “He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.”

As I stated above, we see it still even in our day and I am sure when John had his “revelation” he also saw that things were not going to change. Human nature has NOT changed since the days of Adam and only Christ Jesus can change the innermost nature of man. There were a lot of people even in John’s day, just years after Christ died and rose again, that claimed to be something they were not. There is that old saying that I and many of you grew up with; “your actions speak louder than your words.” In essence, that is exactly what John is trying to say.

Remember again, the Apostle is speaking to those that consider him their spiritual father. He called them, “little children,” an endearment reserved only for those special and close to his heart. He is saying to them, almost prophetically, “if you’re going to say it, but do not act it, you are a liar.”

I know this seems extremely harsh, but try to fathom what he is telling them. If you are that person, the one who speaks one thing and does another, then the truth is not in you. The truth as a WHOLE is not in you. You are either wholly truthful by your deeds, or you are a complete liar, a deceiver and there is no such thing as just a little bit a liar. You are either one or you are not. You either walk in truth, or you live in lies. Years ago I wrote an article for our local newspaper’s religious section entitled, “A Half-Truth is Still a Whole Lie.” You wouldn’t believe the responses I received because there are those who still truly believe there are justifications and gray areas concerning what is TRUTH. We live in an age when theories are tossed around, spoken of and written as if they are absolute fact when in essence they are still just assumptions!

So, remember again, we are not speaking about someone who just has a belief in Jesus. We are talking about those who say they have an intimate, close, relational knowledge of Him. If you say that, but your actions do not show it, then you lie; according to the Scriptures, plain, simple and to the point!

In this day and age, if I were to paraphrase what John wrote to most church-goers, they would say that I am judging and I am unloving and I do not have a right according to the Bible to do that. But John was very clear in stating the truth, and the proof of what we say, or what others say, is in the actions. Christians today are sometimes more concerned with being politically correct than identifying the truth or seemingly hurting someone’s feelings. John was not concerned as he was led by the Holy Spirit to state the truth.

As a Pastor, I have had to deal with people in real world situations. I have had many come to myself and my wife for counseling of one type or another. When presented with the truth, even in a very loving but firm way, I can attest, this will be the reaction you get. Most (I said most, not all) people want their advice sugar-coated and lifting them up. Encouragement IS important, for you never want to try and help someone by putting them down, but rather be honest with truth and do not withhold the hope and encouragement that they can rise above their problems. You will NEVER find an example in Scripture where our Heavenly Father tells His people something very serious, without also giving them the hope and assurance of something better! I have yet to find it, in regards to His relationship with His children!

So, does the Apostle’s comments sound like a contradiction to the loving person that we are to be as Christians? If you believe you understand the true concept of “Agape” love, you will realize that true love, Godly love, can only be expressed in the truth. There is a reason why this very same Apostle recorded the words of Jesus to some believing Jews when He stated, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” – (John 8:31b-32).

We must judge ourselves first and foremost in the light of truth, to make sure that what we say lines up with what we are doing in actuality. Once we judge ourselves before God, we do not have to fear about being judged by others, or by God Himself!

We need to understand something else as well, and do not make the mistake that many do today. We do not come to know God by ONLY keeping His commandments. So many would have you step back into bondage to the Law. That is works, hoping that we will/can impress God enough to accept us. That is works without faith and a deception of the enemy of our souls. Hebrews 11:6, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Want to PLEASE God, want to be accepted by Him? God ALREADY accepts us. We walk in faith, knowing that He does accept us, thereby developing a willingness and desire to keep His commandments. The more we come to know Him in a real spiritual and intimate depth, the more we will please Him, because we love Him so much.

Knowing Him and loving Him, develops within us the ability to keep His commandments. God is telling us, and so much more today than probably any other period of time, that we should first, learn to love Him, get to know Him, and then all the rest will fall right into place. Let’s not get the “cart before the horse” so to speak. He has ALWAYS, first and foremost wanted us to have a deep and abiding relationship with Him.

Next post we will begin with 1 John chapter 2 verse 5.
