Character, Nature and Attributes of God – 4

*Pastor’s Note: These lessons will be Scripture “heavy,” and though I am forewarning you I cannot apologize because it is the Word of God that brings things into the light. Remember that the Word says in the mouth of two or three witnesses, let everything be established. This is a spiritual principle that applies to the Word as well. (Matthew 18:16, 2 Corinthians 13:1). Also because of the need to explain, the lessons will have to be divided up into parts.

Part Four

In the last few lessons we discovered and discussed the Omni or All-inclusive nature and characteristics or attributes of God Almighty. In this lesson we will discuss His Eternalness or the Eternity of God.

ETERNITY: One of God’s characteristics or attributes is His Eternal nature. Concerning God, Himself we mean that His existence is without beginning or end, there are no limits to He existence, either before man and the creation that we exist in or even after what we perceive as time.  In the Bible the word eternity or the concept of the eternal is used in two ways: figuratively, which can signify existence which may have a beginning, but will have no end, such as; angels, the human soul, etc. In other words, as created beings, we had a beginning, but we shall live on, in one way or another into the never-ending or eternal realm.  It is also used literally, which can signify an existence which has no beginning or end, which for the purpose of speaking about God’s attributes, is what we are discussing.

The Bible tells us, “Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.” – Psalm 90:2

“Are You not from everlasting, O LORD my God, my Holy One?” – Habakkuk 1:12.

Before his death, Moses, that mighty man of God, spoke a blessing to the children of Israel, and it begins, as recorded in Deuteronomy 33:27, “The eternal God is a dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms; . . .”

Before this Moses wrote about Abraham in Genesis 21:33, “Then Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there called on the name of the LORD, the Everlasting God.” This name in the original Hebrew is El Olam, from an original form meaning: the God of Eternity.

pd god is eternal

The Psalmist wrote this concerning our Lord and God, “The LORD reigns, He is clothed with majesty; The LORD is clothed, He has girded Himself with strength. Surely the world is established, so that it cannot be moved. Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting.” – Psalm 93:1-2.

“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the LORD, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable.” – Isaiah 40:28.

“For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, . . .” – Isaiah 57:15.

And Jeremiah, the weeping prophet wrote, “But the LORD is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King.” – Jeremiah 10:10.

Eternity and thus the Eternalness of God, Himself, is infinite in duration without any beginning, and without any end, or in fact without limit. He is an ever abiding presence in ALL eternity not restricted by any time. He lives and moves outside of time itself. From our perspective, since we ARE living within the frame of time, God’s existence is forever in the past, is now and is forever into the future.

Because we have always lived in time, it is impossible for us to completely comprehend what it means for God to be eternal. However, one way to think about what it may mean for God to be eternal is to think about what time is and how time affects our everyday lives.

We live in a dimension of time that only proceeds forward, never backwards. Time in this dimension in which we live proceeds only and always forward.  The flow of time can never be reversed.  Nor can it be stopped.  Because it has a beginning created by God, it can only move in one direction, so if you consider God abides in one, all-encompassing dimension, then time, since it was also created for us, is really just a half a dimension of the dimension God encompasses. So, even though we are constrained by  what can be considered a half dimension comprised of time, an eternal being, such as The God of the Bible, is not so limited. He actually exists OUTSIDE of time itself!

pd before the beginning

There are many people today, including some well-meaning Christians, who assume that time has always existed; however, neither modern day science NOR the Bible permits such an assumption.

According to current cosmological theory, the universe came into existence at a precise and specified moment, including all space, time, matter and energy. Bible-believing Christians believe it was what Moses wrote in the first verse of our Bible, “In the beginning God created . . .” – Genesis 1:1. The thing is, modern science (remember God Himself is Omniscience), even concurs with this; there WAS a beginning to everything, time included!

Again, proof of what the Bible has revealed to us all along; “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.” – Romans 1:20-21. The proof of His existence and attributes have ALWAYS been visible to those willing to see!

Now here’s a little controversy for you to swallow, but if you read your Bible about creation, and you are able to read or see in videos what a lot of scientists believe, even though they don’t acknowledge God as the creator, they do acknowledge the BEGINNING of His creation!

Although many Christians reject the idea of a big bang beginning of the universe, others maintain that the Bible not only describes a big bang beginning to the universe but that unlike other religious writings, the Bible’s description of the beginning of the universe is uniquely consistent with what scientists have learned about the beginning of the universe.

It goes to show, that as the prophet Daniel predicted in his writings, that knowledge would be on the increase (Daniel 12:4), modern science is actually CATCHING UP with what the Bible has stated all along!

pd knowledge shall increase

Sue and I have been watching some Science Channel episodes on Discovery Plus entitled, “How the Universe Works,” and it has been eye-opening. These episodes were done back in 2012 or thereabouts, but you can follow along with chapter 1 of Genesis as they explain their the “theories” and as I said, even though they don’t give God acknowledgement as speaking the Words that started it all, they are able to explain it all almost verse for verse! They KNOW something started it, but unless they can see it, or quantify it, they won’t acknowledge IT as God Himself! I personally believe that God is doing this to CONFIRM to His children the truth of all He has told us and as His Word states, to reveal the secrets and mysteries of the spiritual and natural, to His children. God just doesn’t keep secrets from those He calls His own!

This in itself, should cause a greater awe and wonder (fear of the Lord) in all of His children’s hearts and minds. It certainly does mind. It has done wonders for my faith in not limiting God’s ability in anything!

Now here’s some Scriptural proof to show that time, itself, had a beginning and thus was created by God. I’ve already revealed Genesis 1:1, so here’s further evidence;

“No, we speak of God’s secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began.” – 1 Corinthians 2:7 (NIV).

“Grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, . . .” – 2 Timothy 1:9.

“In hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began, . . .” – Titus 1:2.

Now think of this, in time, for mankind, things change, situations change; it is how we grow and especially in maturity and knowledge. We build on one second to the next, the moment we are conceived. We NEED time to be able to advance both naturally AND spiritually forward. Even our languages demonstrate that time is a progression. The Apostle Paul like to remind us to press on, move forward, head towards a goal, etc., etc. “Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 3:13-14.

pd don't look back

Now I stated all this about our need of time to contrast God’s eternalness. The Bible tells us more than one time that our God does NOT change! This is due to His ability to be, outside the confines of time. He knows all, sees all, can do all, because of the fact that He is present in ALL moments and with Him is no past, present or future. The simplest way to put it is: He IS.

Now think of that and remember His comments to Moses and others. “When asked, ‘Who should we say is telling us to say and do these things,’ tell them I AM says!” Again, He IS. He is limitless in each and everything He does AND is! There is nothing, absolutely nothing that can constrain Him.

It is God’s very nature of being eternal that allows Him to not change but to always BE Who He is! That, when you spend time thinking about it, is unfathomably AWESOME! But it lines up with the WHOLE counsel of Scripture!

In closing I want to share one last thing. I read this and wrote this down years ago from something I read online and I saved it for such a time as this:

“It has been said that eternity is duration, without beginning or end; existence, without bounds or dimension; presence or present, without past or future. God’s eternity is youth, without infancy or old age; life without birth or death; today, without yesterday or tomorrow.” – Author Unknown.

I found this to be extremely intriguing and something to contemplate and give great thought too. Also, when you consider that we were made in God’s image AND likeness, though we have a beginning, it is awesome and marvelous that just like Him as Father, we have no ending; rather, our future is forever!

So to sum up the eternity of God, finally read what the Apostle John told us, “’I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,’ says the Lord, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.’” – Revelation 1:8. The Alpha and the Omega, literally in every possible sense, the beginning and the end.

pd alpha omega

Part Five will start with the attribute of Immutability.

Who’s Your Master?

*Pastor’s Note: This is one of the articles I wrote and posted in my very first forum in the mid 90s soon after my first go at a website. The forum offered a more interactive approach with members participating. I thought it might interest my readers today to read some of my first posted writings. I HAVE updated some of the Scripture references, but all in all, it is pretty much as I posted them on the forum. The pictures were added for this posting, though.

“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” – Matthew 6:24, Luke 16:13.

We have all heard the various sayings that, “There are two sides to every coin and there are two sides to every story.” We also know the contrasts, black and white, ying and yang, good and evil, light and dark, right and wrong. They so make up our lives that we have a tendency to take them for granted, not giving them much thought in our day to day lives.

vm two sides to a coin

These are concepts however that even those who do not claim to be Christians take for granted even when they do acknowledge them. Many of them we just take for granted because everyone does understand them only as a concept. But what are we as Christians supposed to be concerned and think about concerning them? Some things may appear obvious such as good and evil, light and dark, right and wrong and especially to us as Christians. But in truth, these concepts denote choices. If in truth we are Christians, true followers of and surrendered to Jesus Christ, how do these play in our lives, and are we sure we are serving the “right” side?

If you take a survey of Americans today, whether they are regular church-goers or not, and if you ask them if they consider themselves to be a Christian, the majority of them, about 85 percent, will tell you that they do BELIEVE in God, or believe it or not, A God. If you ask these same people what it means to DIE to self and LIVE in Christ, many can not give you a Scriptural answer. Many will tell you that if they go to church at least once a week, give in the offering every so often and live good lives, they are fulfilling the commission that Christ gave to His disciples who would follow after Him.

Many CHRISTIANS today take pride in the fact that God and Christ Jesus are a big PART of their lives. Now think about the statement that I just wrote. Read it again. A person claims to be a CHRISTIAN, which in and of itself denotes being recognized with Christ. In other words, when people see a CHRISTIAN, they do not see John Q. Public, but rather they see Christ. Yet, Christ and God, the Father, are ONLY a PART of their lives.

How does the old rule of thumb go? God first, family second, job next, church after that, and so on, and so forth. In other words, if you look at a graph or a chart of priorities in your life, God should take up the most, then comes family, then work, then church and if you have any time left it can be divided amongst other areas of your life. Right? How about WRONG!

vm pie graph

Making God only a part does not make Him your Lord OR Master. Dying to self means that my whole life belongs to God, it is no longer mine. He is not to be a part of my life, but rather, I am to be a part of Him! Being a Christian means that John Q. Public no longer exists, but rather, Christ IN John Q. Public is Who exists.

Can you see that anything less is not serving God as Lord and Master; instead you are trying to serve your own life and hope that He will be satisfied being a PART? Giving up your life for Christ, being a Christian in truth, is a richer, more rewarding lifestyle by far. Instead of giving up your life, you are in essence, gaining eternity! Anything else and you are short-changing yourself in the eternal scheme of things.

God, as our Heavenly Father, and Christ, as our Lord and yes, Savior, understand the things that are important in our lives. That is why Jesus told us in Matthew to seek FIRST the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and then all the things He talked about previously would be added. You think that if you strive and struggle to make ends meet that you will be able to reward yourself with a nice house and a fancy car, for instance. Don’t you realize that you will constantly struggle and strive and whatever else it takes to not just acquire it, but also to keep it. When Christ is FIRST in your life, the house comes to you because it is Christ’s promise to those who follow Him first and He is supplying it as a need, not because you had to struggle for it. Or is it too hard to believe that what Christ tells us about this could be true?

Truly being a Christian is so much more than the things we do as a religious ritual. Don’t you remember that when Jesus came to share the Good News the first time, it was to let mankind know that it is not the ritual that He is interested in but the heart attitude?

He wants an intimate relationship with His people. Intimacy is a condition of being sold out to the one that you are with. When a man and a woman get married, it is usually because they only have EYES for each other. Their hearts are “sold out” to each other. That is what intimacy is all about. When you are so lost in that other person, everything else around you disappears, people, circumstances, and all the things that used to matter. That is what Christ wants in us. After all, He IS the Bridegroom coming back for a Bride! Do you think He will be coming back for someone whose eyes are always straying elsewhere and especially to THINGS? He’s coming back for a people that only have EYES focused on Him! In other words, you can’t have your eyes on the world and the things of the world and say that you only have eyes for Him.

vm do not love the world

In a lot of things there ARE two sides to consider and take into account. However, if you say that you are a Christian, there can be only one side. The Apostle John wrote this, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” – 1 John 2:15. Either you serve the world and hope for its treasures and riches, which are only temporary, or you serve the risen Lord, the Master of time and eternity and you know and realize that even though you may struggle for a mere 70 or 80 years, forever and ever is worth the price of serving.

Actually, BEING a Christian is much more than a few words you may have spoken; it is a life that is immersed in Christ, and NOT a lifestyle that only allows Christ to be a part of it. When you are actually and truly a Christian, the cares of the world disappear in the intimacy of your relationship with the One who truly loves you. The LORD Jesus Christ is coming back soon, is He truly your LORD? Something to seriously reflect on.

Character, Nature and Attributes of God – 3

*Pastor’s Note: These lessons will be Scripture “heavy,” and though I am forewarning you I cannot apologize because it is the Word of God that brings things into the light. Remember that the Word says in the mouth of two or three witnesses, let everything be established. This is a spiritual principle that applies to the Word as well. (Matthew 18:16, 2 Corinthians 13:1). Also because of the need to explain, the lessons will have to be divided up into parts.

Part Three

In the last two lessons we explored God’s Omniscience, His ability and nature of knowing all there ever was or will ever be concerning knowledge and His Omnipotence or His ability and nature of being all powerful and supremely and ultimately sovereign both in the realm of the natural and the spiritual.

We will now move on to one of my favorites, the study of His Omnipresence. I love to think and even speculate in the spiritual of just how BIG our God is and there is no way the human mind can comprehend in its present state! This is why I tell and teach people to TRY and think outside the box of normal and mainstream religion. Not with vain speculation, but to comprehend God in His character and personality. After all, He is Father to many of us.

pd god is omnipresent

OMNIPRESENCE: By Omnipresence we mean the ability AND nature of God Almighty to be everywhere present all at once. Now I want you to think about that statement for a moment, don’t just glean over it. Also, I am hopeful that you are beginning to see the correlation between the attributes we’ve discussed and how they are able to make God, in His person, the God that He is!

Now before moving on, I want you to remember that the Father is Spirit. Spirit is not seen, much like the wind is not seen, but the effects of the wind are definitely evident. So it is with God, as the Father. Since He IS Spirit, He can be and IS everywhere at once. In other words, He is here with us as He has promised to “never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5, Deuteronomy 31:8). At the same time He is billions of light-years across the universe where we cannot even go. Everywhere He has created, He is there right now.

Now if you love the science of physics, strain your brain on that thought. The term light years means that is the amount of time it takes for the light from a distant star or galaxy to get to us. In other words, the closest star which is about four-and-a-half light years away, the light we see today is actually four-and-a-half years old already! What we are seeing is the light from the past. Consider the light from BILLIONS of light-years away! Yet, God, the Father, is even there!

Consider these Scripture verses:

“But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain You.” – 1 Kings 8:27.

“For His eyes are on the ways of man, And He sees all his steps. There is no darkness nor shadow of death Where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.” – Job 34:21-22.

“Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me.” – Psalm 139:7-10.

pd heaven is my throne

Thus says the LORD: “Heaven is My throne, And earth is My footstool. Where is the house that you will build Me? And where is the place of My rest? For all those things My hand has made, And all those things exist,” Says the LORD. – Isaiah 66:1-2.

“Am I a God near at hand,” says the LORD, “And not a God afar off? Can anyone hide himself in secret places, So I shall not see him?” says the LORD; “Do I not fill heaven and earth?” says the LORD. – Jeremiah 23:23-24.

“He made the Pleiades and Orion; He turns the shadow of death into morning And makes the day dark as night; He calls for the waters of the sea And pours them out on the face of the earth; The LORD is His name.” – Amos 5:8.

“He who builds His layers in the sky, And has founded His strata in the earth; Who calls for the waters of the sea, And pours them out on the face of the earth-The LORD is His name.” – Amos 9:6.

“And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.” – Hebrews 4:13.

You can easily see by these Scriptures, and there are many more, that God is everywhere present. In other words, there is no place that our God is not! Because the Father is Spirit, He is in Heaven, “Hear in heaven Your dwelling place; . . .” – 1 Kings 8:30. (Isaiah 66:1, Revelation 21:2). But He is also as close to us as our heart. It has been said countless times that our God is as far away as the farthest heavens, but yet as close as my heart. This is what the Apostle John wrote in one of his letters, or epistles; “No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us.” – 1 John 4:12. (Bold emphasis mine).

pd god is spirit

Now we know that the Father communicates with us Spirit to spirit, (Romans 8:16), for it was for the rebirth or renewal of our inner spirit that Jesus came as the Son. That was so that we COULD have a renewed relationship with our Creator, the Father. “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” – John 4:24. I found the following in my study and research on John’s verse and I loved it above many of the commentaries:

1Adam Clarke’s Commentary:

Verse 24.  God is a Spirit] This is one of the first, the greatest, the most sublime, and necessary truths in the compass of nature! There is a God, the cause of all things-the fountain of all perfection-without parts or dimensions, for he is ETERNAL-filling the heavens and the earth-pervading, governing, and upholding all things: for he is an infinite SPIRIT! This God can be pleased only with that which resembles himself: therefore he must hate sin and sinfulness; and can delight in those only who are made partakers of his own Divine nature. As all creatures were made by him, so all owe him obedience and reverence; but, to be acceptable to this infinite Spirit, the worship must be of a spiritual nature-must spring from the heart, through the influence of the Holy Ghost: and it must be in TRUTH, not only in sincerity, but performed according to that Divine revelation which he has given men of himself. A man worships God in spirit, when, under the influence of the Holy Ghost, he brings all his affections, appetites, and desires to the throne of God; and he worships him in truth, when every purpose and passion of his heart, and when every act of his religious worship, is guided and regulated by the word of God.

We can therefore take comfort in the fact that our God is as close to us as our heart, or as others have said, as close as a whisper. As stated above in Deuteronomy and Hebrews, He will “never leave us nor forsake us,” but we further see this closeness in the Proverbs, the Wisdom of Solomon, “A man who has friends must himself be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” – Proverbs 18:24. What comfort and what awesome assurance to the one who walks uprightly with the Spirit of the Lord!

In closing this section we should be aware though, and reminded, that because He KNOWS all, and He IS everywhere, there is nothing hid from Him. We should continue to walk with Him in reverential fear, awe and wonder and that in itself will constitute an act of worship.

pd awe and wonder

Part Four will start with the attribute of Eternity.

Heaven’s Grocery Store

anecdotal stories

*Pastor’s Note: This is another one of those great anecdotal stories from the past that used to circulate by email before the social media craze hit. It is one I have saved for years. Enjoy and be blessed!

As I was walking down life’s highway many years ago, I came upon a sign that read HEAVEN’S GROCERY STORE in big bold letters. When I got a little closer the doors swung open wide.

When I came to myself I was standing inside. I saw a host of angels. They were standing everywhere. One handed me a basket and said “My child shop with care.” My understanding was that everything a human needed was in that grocery store and what you could not carry you could come back for more.

First I got some Love. Patience was in that same row. Further down was Understanding, you need that everywhere you go. So I also picked up a box or two of Wisdom to go with the understanding, and some Faith, a bag or two; and Charity of course I would need some of that too. I couldn’t miss the Holy Ghost, He was all over the place. And then some Strength and Courage to help me run the race I was in.

My basket was getting full but I remembered I needed Grace, and then I saw Salvation and I knew I needed that, and I spied the Salvation was for free. I tried to get enough of that to do for you and me, but the angel stated it was only one to a customer. Then I started to the counter to pay my grocery bill, for I thought I had everything I needed to do the Master’s will.

as heaven's grocery store

As I went up the aisle, I saw Prayer and put a big helping of that in, for I knew when I stepped outside I would run into temptation as it was all over. Peace and Joy were plentiful, the last things on the shelf. Song and Praise were hanging near so I just helped myself. Then I said to the angel, “Now how much do I owe?”

He smiled and said, “Just take them everywhere you go.”

Again I asked, “Really now, how much do I owe?”

“My child” he said, “God paid the bill a long, long time ago. It’s available to anyone, all they have to do is come.”

Character, Nature and Attributes of God – 2

*Pastor’s Note: These lessons will be Scripture “heavy,” and though I am forewarning you I cannot apologize because it is the Word of God that brings things into the light. Remember that the Word says in the mouth of two or three witnesses, let everything be established. This is a spiritual principle that applies to the Word as well. (Matthew 18:16, 2 Corinthians 13:1). Also because of the need to explain, the lessons will have to be divided up into parts.

Part Two

Last time we covered a bit on Omniscience, God’s ability AND nature of knowing all things there is to know, so this time we will begin by moving on with Omnipotence.

pd God is omnipotent

OMNIPOTENCE: By Omnipotence is meant that God has unlimited authority and is all-powerful. It is absolute and unlimited. He is supreme in sovereignty and has divine right over everything He has created. God’s power and authority have no boundaries. He can bring to pass everything and anything that He desires.

The following gives us some examples:

Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. – Genesis 1:3-4.

“Is anything too hard for the LORD?” – Genesis 18:14.

Then Job answered the LORD and said: “I know that You can do everything, And that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.” – Job 42:1-2.

“Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters, They see the works of the LORD, And His wonders in the deep. For He commands and raises the stormy wind, Which lifts up the waves of the sea. They mount up to the heavens, They go down again to the depths; Their soul melts because of trouble. They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, And are at their wits’ end. Then they cry out to the LORD in their trouble, And He brings them out of their distresses. He calms the storm, So that its waves are still. Then they are glad because they are quiet; So He guides them to their desired haven.” – Psalm 107:23-30.

“‘Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.” – Jeremiah 32:17.

And at the end of the time I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me; and I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who lives forever: For His dominion is an everlasting dominion, And His kingdom is from generation to generation. All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; He does according to His will in the army of heaven And among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand Or say to Him, “What have You done?” – Daniel 4:34-35.

pd everlasting dominion

“And do not think to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.” – Matthew 3:9.

So the men marveled, saying, “Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?” – Matthew 8:27.

“But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” – Matthew 19:26.

“For with God nothing will be impossible.” – Luke 1:37.

Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” – James 4:15.

Again, scripture is full of examples of His unlimited power and what’s listed above is not an exhausted list. Everything in His creation is under His control, absolutely, therefore everything period, is under His control. Even Jesus’ disciples marveled at the Son of God’s power that was demonstrated by the Lord’s examples. Also, David and the other psalmists speak of those who have witnessed first hand God’s mighty and absolute power. The New Testament writers understood very well this concept of unlimited and absolute authority and power. In one of the Scriptures listed above James states that it is sheer arrogance and evil to say other than what he wrote in the verse, knowing that our lives are fleeting and in the hands of the Lord. Even the great king Nebuchadnezzar of the Old Testament in Daniel’s time, knew this of God, Almighty, as noted in the verse above. Even Satan, the very enemy of our souls, is STILL subject to God’s authority as evidenced in Job 1:12, and 2:6, where Satan had to get permission to afflict God’s servant. So he didn’t have the power OR the authority to afflict Job without God’s permission. This should be a very strong lesson to us today!

His, the devil’s, final outcome is in God’s hand and has been all along as witnessed in the Book of Revelation. As it’s been said many times, sometimes in jest but definitely the truth, we KNOW Who wins the fight!

pd satan bound

“He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while.” – Revelation 20:2-3.

“The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.” – Revelation 20:10.

Man himself, in his relentless arrogance and pride is constantly searching for more power and authority. Mankind wants it though so they can use it to rise above their fellow man. Only then can they feel like they possess some semblance of power. Real power and real authority can only come as a result of our relationship with the One Who in actuality IS true power and authority, the God of all creation. Without this aspect of His nature, just like Omniscience, He wouldn’t be God. It isn’t just what He is capable of, it is part of Who He IS.

Part Three will start with the attribute of Omnipresence.

Character, Nature and Attributes of God – 1

*Pastor’s Note: These lessons will be Scripture “heavy,” and though I am forewarning you I cannot apologize because it is the Word of God that brings things into the light. Remember that the Word says in the mouth of two or three witnesses, let everything be established. This is a spiritual principle that applies to the Word as well. (Matthew 18:16, 2 Corinthians 13:1). Also because of the need to explain, the lessons will have to be divided up into parts.

Part One

Right now I am in the middle of doing a study on the Godhead and I want to make sure I have all the Scriptures and thoughts lined up. Also, I am in communication with a Brother in Christ, that actually inspired me to do a study, but I have also realized I truly NEED to lay a foundation out first. That is what prompted this study first.

Now I may give you a little information that may be repeated in the next lesson, but bear with me as I believe this is one of the most important lessons we can learn from the Holy Spirit.

First, let me clarify this for those that have not been taught or are not one-hundred percent sure for the reason the Bible was handed down to mankind. It is not just an historical document though history is definitely involved, but rather through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit upon men of old, it points to what the title of this lesson is, the Character, Nature and Attributes of God Almighty.

You cannot have a relationship with someone, anyone, without getting to know them in a very personal way. That is what the Bible is and the purpose for which it was given. Salvation is only a PART of the Bible. The reason we NEED to be saved is to have a relationship with God, the Father, through His Son, Jesus Christ, as empowered by the Holy Spirit. Now many of you who have followed me for years have seen me write that phrase before.

Our relationship with God, the Father, was the reason we were created in the first place. To have a relationship with a creation that can choose to love Him for Who He is, was always His plan and the only way to have that kind of love is to give the creation the power to reason and to choose his direction in life. Without choice there can be NO true, unconditional love, love like the Father which in the Greek is Agape.

pd jesus showed the father's heart

Again, I want to make this clear; salvation is the pathway to a relationship with the Father. It is the pathway through Jesus Christ, but it was not the sole purpose of giving us His written Word. The Word is there so that we may come to know our way to Him, but then to also and most significantly know Who it is we are getting to know and love!

When you get into the Word of God, if you do so with the motive and intent to seek out Who God is in the person of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit Who inspired the written Word will open your spiritual eyes and reveal to you just Who God is. First, He reveals though the importance of revealing the Son Who was sent to this earth to bridge the gap between mankind and the Father Who is Spirit.

First we’re going to delve into the Nature of God Almighty. We need to lay a foundation and get an understanding, as much as is humanly possible, of the nature and eventually the character of God. There is no way that man, the creation of God, is going to be able to fully comprehend these attributes of Our Heavenly Father. We were created with an ability to learn, to reason and to gain understanding, but we need to realize it will always be a sort of limited understanding until we are totally one with the Lord. Again, this understanding, empowered by the Holy Spirit, creates in us a realization of the magnitude and awe, or what the Bible describes as the fear of God.

Every relationship builds upon our knowledge of the individual in which we choose to have a relationship with. You do not have a relationship with someone that you do not know. Let me explain a little bit of the concept of relationship and especially as I hope to apply it to God Almighty.

For instance, I can not say that I have a relationship with a French scientist stationed in Paris. If there indeed is a French scientist stationed in Paris, I don’t know his name; for that matter I don’t even know this person’s gender. If this person exists, I know nothing that pertains to his even being a person. Therefore, I can surmise that given the Law of Probability, there IS someone stationed in Paris, France who is some type of scientist, but other than that, who can truly say with all certainty? On the other hand, if I have actually developed a relationship with someone in Paris, France who happens to be an archeologist, and I COMMUNICATE with that person via telephone, letters, the internet etc., and we converse back and forth and share personal information, I can state truthfully that I have a relationship with that person and can also thus call him by name which makes it personal.  When I, therefore converse with you about this person, you would recognize that I am talking about a person who really exists because of a firsthand knowledge. The very same holds true with God. We can not develop a relationship with God, if we know nothing about Him. We can not develop one with Him if we do not communicate with Him, AND we can not communicate to Him with others in a believable way unless we DO have first hand knowledge of Him. He may be like the probable French scientist living in Paris. The odds are good that He exists, but we may never know without choosing to establish the relationship that proves to ourselves, and to others I might add, the truth of His existence.

pd nature of God

Okay, the nature of God can be classified simply this way; it is for Him the nature of why He is God, part, of which defines Him as God, and the character, which we will get into later describes the other part that defines Him as God. The natural can be divided into about five categories, that we can rely on Scripture to define and explain. The natural attributes can be listed as follows:  Omniscience, Omnipotence, Omnipresence, Eternity, and Immutability.

Now these are important in not just understanding Who God is, but also in understanding what so many describe as the MYSTERY of the Godhead. Personally, when you spend time meditating on these attributes, the Godhead doesn’t stay a mystery. But through tradition especially, and subtle misinformation, the Godhead is said to be a mystery and we will discover that in the latter lesson.

For now here are just a few Scriptures, and these certainly aren’t all of them, that promise God reveals things hidden to His children and those surrendered to Him about many things belonging to the Kingdom of God:

Job 12:22, Jeremiah 33:2-3, Daniel 2:21b-22, Matthew 13:11, Mark 4:11, Luke 8:10, Romans 16:25-27, 1 Corinthians 2:7, Ephesians 1:7-10, Ephesians 3:9-11, Colossians 1:26, Revelation 10:7.

The truth of the matter is that God does not keep things a mystery concerning Who He is. There are a few instances but very few where He tells the writer to seal up until the end times something that He, as God, has planned, but there is no where in the Bible that He says or states, He is a mystery Himself, to His children. Again, you can’t have a relationship with someone you don’t or can’t know.

Now, to the attributes listed above:

OMNISCIENCE: Omniscience is defined as “the state of having total knowledge, the quality of knowing everything.” In other words, it means having infinite and absolute unlimited knowledge and wisdom. Relating to God Almighty; He knows all things and is absolutely perfect in His wisdom, knowledge and understanding. It also means that of those things start and end with Him. Outside of Him, nothing else can be known for He knows it all! The scriptures are full of descriptions concerning God’s knowledge.  The Apostle John writes this; “God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.” – 1 John 3:20b.

pd God knows everything

In Job 37:14-16, Elihu, a wise young man, states this, “Listen to this, O Job; Stand still and consider the wondrous works of God. Do you know when God dispatches them, And causes the light of His cloud to shine? Do you know how the clouds are balanced, Those wondrous works of Him who is perfect in knowledge?” Previously Elihu told Job, “For truly my words are not false; One who is perfect in knowledge is with you. Behold, God is mighty, but despises no one; He is mighty in strength of understanding.” – Job 36:4.

Psalms reads, “He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name. Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite.” – Psalm 147:4-5.

Mankind as a race has developed the sciences to try and explain and categorize the things which we experience and the world that is around us. But God created all that we try to explain with our sciences. He has ALL the knowledge of physics, astronomy, geology and so forth because He is the author of all them. Man only has that knowledge because God has graced mankind with that same knowledge. According to one dictionary, (there are many with similar meanings) the word science means: knowledge acquired by careful observation, by deduction of the laws which govern changes and conditions, and by testing these deductions by experiment.

People, man may have to acquire knowledge but God didn’t acquire this knowledge, HE IS the knowledge! That is part of His being, His nature. Thus, He is the One who CREATED the laws which govern the changes and conditions.  Man can only test the deductions that he arrives at, but God instituted them. God’s knowledge is absolutely far-reaching. “For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, And He ponders all his paths.” – Proverbs 5:21. Psalm 139:2-4, “You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O LORD, You know it altogether.” There are some things that man, in his finite mind, just can not understand or totally comprehend. God is God because of the fact that He is high and above His creation.

pd high above the heavens

To sum up His Omniscience, Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! “For who has known the mind of the LORD? Or who has become His counselor?” “Or who has first given to Him And it shall be repaid to him?” For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen. – Romans 11:33-36.

Part Two will start with the attribute of Omnipotence.

Life In Perspective

anecdotal stories

One day a father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose of showing his son how poor people live.

They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, “How was the trip?”

“It was great, Dad.”

“Did you see how poor people live?” the father asked.

“Oh yeah” said the son.

“So what did you learn from the trip?” asked the father.

The son answered, “I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night.”

as stars for lanterns

The boy continued on, “Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us – they have friends to protect them.”

With this the boy’s father was speechless.

Then his son added, “Thanks, dad, for showing me how poor we are.”

Jude Verses 24-25

Jude 1:24-25, “Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, To God our Savior, Who alone is wise, Be glory and majesty, Dominion and power, Both now and forever. Amen.”

From everything I have read pertaining to Jude, the letter AND the man, this is considered one of the great closings or benedictions of the New Testament. Jude packs a lot in this beautiful closing and you can see why when you truly consider and meditate on what he is saying.

Just so you can see the beauty in the reading at first, before getting into the analysis let me give you the version I like to read, for ease, and one of the versions that I use to study alongside the New King James Version.

The Holy Bible, New Living Translation says it this way: “Now all glory to God, who is able to keep you from falling away and will bring you with great joy into his glorious presence without a single fault. All glory to him who alone is God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord. All glory, majesty, power, and authority are his before all time, and in the present, and beyond all time! Amen.” – Jude 1:24-25 NLT.

And: “Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.” (NASB)

One amazing thing I find with this letter is that it ends in essence just as it started, with Jude giving assurance to the Body of Christ, those true Christians and followers of Christ Jesus. Look at how he closes with, “Now to Him who is able . . . “ We can go through the whole Word of God and find instances written of just what God is able to do in and with His children, His chosen.

et now to him who is able

If you Bing or Google that phrase or cross reference in your favorite Bible you will find countless instances of what God is able to do in us and for us.

He is able to keep us in perfect peace, Isaiah 26:3
He is able to establish, Romans 16:25
He is able to do exceedingly abundantly, Ephesians 3:20
He is able to subdue, Philippians 3:21
He is able to keep what we have committed to Him, 2 Timothy 1:12
He is able to aid, Hebrews 2:18
He is able to save, Hebrews 7:25
He is able to keep us from stumbling, Jude 1:24

Now I want to remind you again, why Jude wrote this letter to the church. It was because of the apostasy already starting in his day and the greater apostasy confronting the Church in the future and that makes the latter promise, “able to keep you (us) from stumbling,” that much more important and appropriate. Think about it; we ARE surely living in the last days according to all the signs of the times given to us through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and much closer to the end than were those to whom Jude originally wrote this letter too.

When you consider it, we are much more prone and vulnerable to doctrinal error and falsehoods. We definitely seem to have many more areas and means for temptation to sin cropping up all around us. Yet we have nothing to fear despite all the false teaching around us. We need not despair or feel downtrodden in this for we have a precious promise that our God CAN and is “able to keep us from stumbling (or falling).”

But here is the great thing that Jude is presenting to believers, the promises don’t stop with just that. He is also able “to present us faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy.” Now what is this exactly saying you may ask. Our God is able to keep us free from sin and keep us blameless as we stand before Him one day, and stand in His, God’s presence, in His glory and exceeding joy. I want you to understand something right now. No one was able to stand in God’s glory let alone presence without being protected. Read the account of Moses in the presence of God’s glory in Exodus 33:16-23 to see what I mean.

et glory of God

Yet here Jude is promising us through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit that we WILL stand in the presence of the Lord and His glory one day and we will also be in the presence of God’s exceeding joy! Now I mention God’s joy because the thought of being in God’s presence doesn’t stop with just His glory. The thought continues on and through the phrase, “exceeding joy.”

For years I like so many others would read the passage in Nehemiah 8:10b, “Do not sorrow, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” I always thought since this is talking about the children of Israel’s sorrow, it must be talking about their joy, their being joyful or rejoicing in the Lord. It was many years later in deeper study that I realized, the reason they did not have to bask in sorrow was not because of their ability to be joyful or rejoice, but it was because as their God and Father, it was HIS joy in them that would give them strength. Let me tell you, when I experienced this, it literally changed the way I looked at and studied the Word of God. And, here in Jude we have another instance, we WILL experience God’s “exceeding joy” while standing in His presence and glory one day! How awesome and amazing is that?!

Now as we segue out of this verse into the next, (it truly is just one sentence though), think about this; consider that we were dead in our transgressions and sins, we are poor, feeble, weak and oftentimes failing servants, then consider this promise; one day we will stand boldly actually being welcomed into the Throne Room of the Almighty and we will be blameless without spot, blemish or wrinkle! Do you want a definition of grace, this is it!

He is able to keep each and everyone of His own. Look at how Jude continues and remember, Jude was born Jewish and followed the Law before He surrendered to Christ, he writes “God our Savior.” Remember Jesus’ words, “I and My Father are one.” – John 10:30. The Father is Spirit, Jesus is the divine in the flesh. If Jesus is Savior now, and God has always been Savior to His CHOSEN children, God’s role as Savior has not diminished or changed. (I will be doing a study on the Godhead within the week).

et God you are

God is not just able to be our Protector and our Keeper, as we have seen in the verse in Hebrews 7:25 He is and always has been our Savior as well. God, the Father devised the plan whereby He would come as His own Son in the form of man, to be a sacrificial lamb just so we could be reconciled to Him in Spirit. “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” – John 4:24. We could not worship God in spirit and truth because our spirit was dead due to sin. There had to be a blood, a flesh and blood sacrifice on our behalf and God’s plan, send His Son as that debt for each of us.

For the last several months I have been posting to my website and to social media, the Scriptures from Proverbs which is called the Book of Wisdom. Wisdom comes from and originates with God. It was with God in the beginning of all Creation. All wisdom comes from the Father and is available to any and all who seek it and ask for it. (James 1:5).

*The oldest manuscripts add, “through Jesus Christ our Lord.” The transcribers, fancying that “Savior” applied to Christ alone, omitted the words. The sense is, To the only God (the Father) who is our Savior through (that is, by the mediation of) Jesus Christ our Lord. (Pastor’s Note: A perfect reference and confirmation to this would be, 1 Timothy 2:5).

Now Jude is continuing on with the assumed thought of God’s worthiness, our worship towards Him when he writes, “Be glory and majesty, Dominion and power,” for in the Christian’s life and spiritual walk, it is to be understood that these attributes DO truly belong to God and only God.

The consummate honor belonging to God for all He is and has done is deservedly Glory. Majesty is considered the ultimate dignity and splendor He deserves as the Supreme Sovereign, the King of all the universe, natural and spiritual. The unchallenged position which belongs only to Him by sovereign right is Dominion, and Power or Authority is His might as well entitlement to rule all and everything that He has created.

et both now and forever

Jude finishes with “Both now and forever. Amen” The newer versions add “Before all time and now and forever. Amen” (See note next).

*The oldest manuscripts, after “power,” have “before all the age,” that is, before all time as to the past: “and now,” as to the present; “and to all the ages,” that is, for ever, as to the time to come. (Pastor’s Note: In other words it is similar to what the NLT states, “Before all time, and in the present, and beyond all time!”).

The fact remains if applied today, all TRUE believers find their greatest joy and comfort in glorifying Him in all His character now and forever! We know that believers from the past felt the same way in the past.

So ends the expository teaching of Jude. God bless you all so abundantly and as you study may the peace of Christ Jesus and our Heavenly Father be with you.
