Letter To The Church of . . .

*Pastor’s Note: Here’s the possible setup. The United States has suspended the Constitution and more or less it is now a dictatorship. It still maintains a semblance of allowing citizens certain rights but for the most part everything is government controlled. Denomination churches have been banned and their doors locked. Many Pastors and leaders have been locked up, but not all.

Instead however, there are churches, mega-churches that are no more than government run propaganda machines with a semblance of what once was called Christianity. The Pastors and Elders in charge of these “churches” are state-certified and state sponsored and they and all their “services” are strictly monitored. Most programs of anything that even looks like being religious are New Age philosophy and mixtures of Middle Eastern as well as other state sponsored programs and teachings.

But the Church is still alive . . .

pd church alive

Meeting in small groups in differing homes on differing days of the week, anywhere from ten to thirty people meet to discuss and encourage one another in what they remember from the written Word of God. Remember as best they can for Bibles of ALL translations and versions have been banned as hateful and treasonous. True worship does take place and the Holy Spirit’s presence in manifested over and over again . . .

The following is one of the means with which groups and others are encouraged. What is written below is considered contraband, yet God is STILL in control and His Church is still alive!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus;

I want you to know how much I have agonized for you and for the church, and for many other friends and believers who have never met me personally. My purpose and goal is that they will be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love. I want them to have complete and full confidence because they have a complete understanding of God’s secret and mysterious plan, which is Christ Jesus Himself. In Him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

I am telling you this so that no one will be able to deceive you with persuasive and well-crafted arguments. For though I am far away from you, my heart is with you. And I am happy and rejoice because you are living as you should and because of your strong faith in Christ Jesus.

And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow Him and to live in obedience to Him. Let your roots grow down into Him and draw up spiritual nourishment from Him, so you will continue to grow in faith, strong and vigorous in the truth you were taught and thus let your lives be built upon Him. Then through your faith you will overflow with thankfulness for all He has done and is still doing.

Don’t let anyone capture you or lead you astray with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the evil spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ Himself. For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in Christ’s human body. So you also are complete through your union with Christ, Who is the Head AND Lord over every ruler and authority in the universe, both natural and spiritual.

pd alive in christ

God, the Father made you alive with Christ, for He forgave all our sins. He canceled the record of the charges against us and He took it away and destroyed it by nailing it to the cross of Jesus Christ. In this way, God disarmed the evil spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by His victory over them on the cross of Jesus Christ.

So don’t let anyone condemn you for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating certain holy days or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths. For these rules are only shadows of the real thing and the reality yet to come which is Christ Himself. Don’t let anyone condemn you by insisting on pious self-denial and don’t let anyone demand that you must worship with angels or actually worship the angels themselves just because they are saying they have had visions about these things. These people claim to be so humble, but their sinful minds have made them proud. However they are not connected to Christ, the Head of the Body. For He holds the whole Body together with its joints, ligaments, and strong sinews and we grow and get our strength from God Himself Who nourishes it.

You have died with Christ, and He has set you free from the evil spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world, such as, “Don’t handle! Don’t taste! Don’t touch!”? Such rules are mere human teachings about things that deteriorate and are gone as soon as we use them. These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, humility and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help and have no effect in conquering a person’s evil thoughts and desires.

Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor and power at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven and let THAT fill your thoughts, and not about the things down here on earth. For you died to this life when you took on to yourself Christ’s death, and thus your real life is hidden with Christ in God. And when Christ, who is your real and true life, is finally revealed to the whole world, you will share in all His glory!

pd christ in glory

The brothers and sisters here with me send their greetings, love and prayers. Please give our greetings to our Christian brothers and sisters there and after you have read this letter, (and have made copies if possible), please pass it to the other homes meeting in worship so they can read it too.

And now, may the grace of God be ever with you in the name of God’s Son, Christ Jesus.

*Pastor’s Final Thoughts: There is no real way of knowing if something like this will ever come our way, for in actuality, the Church most likely will be caught up in the air to meet our Lord and Savior so that He can then pour out judgment and wrath on the final rebellion and also free the operation of the anti-christ so that God’s ultimate plan for His creation is fulfilled. But a thought remains, in a situation like this, what are we as God’s true children going to do if this does happen?!

Here is the point I want you to consider; in a situation like this, is it going to matter what version of the written Word of God that you remember? The Holy Spirit WILL bring to you the TRUTH, which promises to make us free! That is a promise of His. This is of course just an example of how we might write to one another today to share the LIVING Word of God.

Prayer For Lost Loved Ones

*Pastor’s Note: We all have loved ones that have either never made a commitment to or surrendered to the Lord, or are sitting on the fence so-to-speak, or in fact know the truth and are wandering from it. Let us not only pray for one another as Brothers and Sisters, but pray for one another’s lost loved ones as well.

Oh Heavenly Father, Almighty God;

Your wisdom and understanding are so far above our comprehension. Your knowledge of the human heart with all it’s secret places is so far above our imagination and yet, You tell us in Your written Word that You have no desire that anyone perish due to our own natural inclination and tendencies toward sin.

We rely upon that Word and upon Your desires AND perfect will towards us as Your Creation. We KNOW we are weak and lost without You and we need Your Holy Spirit to provide us the help to overcome our natural tendencies.

We recognize that You came to earth in the guise of Your Son, totally God in the Spirit and yet totally man in the flesh to bridge that gap that sin created in the beginning, causing us to be removed from a relationship with You as our Father. We thank You and glorify You for such an awesome Love that caused You to provide for us a sacrifice that we ourselves could never provide! We thank You for paying the debt that we individually owed and for the intercession on behalf of each of us individually.

We now come humbly and yet sincerely before You to intercede on behalf of those loved ones that as of yet have to surrender themselves to You and who have not yet acknowledged You as Lord of all. Some are sitting halfway on the fence not sure which way they will choose and we ask that Your Holy Spirit give them the nudge necessary to make a knowledgeable and yet faith-filled decision.

pp god's loveWe know that You alone KNOW all things and You alone have the wisdom and foreknowledge to know what it will take to get each individual to make a decision. We also know that Your Love, Your very Nature of Love, dictates that they make their own choice without force and yet we also know that You alone can open their spiritually blind eyes to at least SEE the truth of what You are offering to them freely.

Father, if there is any sin or hypocrisy in us that is hindering them and their decision, please forgive us in Jesus’ Name so that there will be no excuse and so that in the end, no matter what, You and You alone will be glorified.

We thank You on their behalf for hearing us and loving us enough to allow us the privilege to intercede on their behalf. We know that we ourselves have an Advocate, an Intercessor Who is ever standing on behalf of our needs. He is our Great Example and thus we come to You in Jesus’ most Precious and Holy Name. Let Your will be done here on earth and You be glorified in everything we say AND do!

Amen and AMEN!

Be Diligent, An Excerpt – Alexander MacLaren

Alexander MacLaren (February 11, 1826 – May 5, 1910) was an English non-conformist minister of Scottish origin. This Scottish preacher was known as the ‘Prince of Expositors’ and “the supreme example of the Protestant expository preacher.” He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of a merchant and lay preacher. The family moved to Edinburgh, where as a 12 year old, MacLaren accepted Christ and was publicly baptized. He was educated at Glasgow University and Stepney College, a Baptist college in London. He became thoroughly grounded in Greek and Hebrew and learned to study the Bible in the original languages. This laid the foundation for his distinctive work as an expositor and for the biblical content of his preaching. He became a much sought after preacher and accepted the pastorate at Union Chapel in Manchester in 1858. He was the pastor there for 45 years until 1903. After this he continued to preach and study the Word endeavoring to never veer from the path of historic truths.

‘Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye
may be found of Him in peace, without spot, and blameless.’ — 2 Peter 3:14.

Peter is fond of using the word which is here translated ‘be diligent.’ Hard work, honest effort, continuous and persevering, is His simple recipe for all nobleness. You will find He employs it, for instance, at least three times in this letter, in such connections as, ‘Besides this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue,’ and so on through the whole glorious series; and again, ‘Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure.’ So, then, there is no mystery about the way of securing the aim; work towards it, and you will get it.

Now, of course, there are a great many other considerations to be brought in in reference to the Christian man’s means of becoming Christlike. We should have to speak of the gifts of a Divine Spirit, of the dependence upon God for it, and the like; but for the present purpose we may confine ourselves to Peter’s own prescription, ‘be diligent,’ and that will secure it. But then the word itself opens out into further meanings than that. It not only implies diligence: there may be diligence of a very mechanical and ineffective sort. The word also includes in its meaning earnestness, and it very frequently includes that which is the ordinary consequence of earnestness — viz., haste and economy of time.

I would say, lastly, Make haste about cultivating a Christlike character. The harvest is great, the toil is heavy, the sun is drawing to the west, the evening shadows are very long with some of us, the reckoning is at hand, and the Master waits to count your sheaves. There is no time to lose, brother; set about it as you have never done before, and say, ‘This one thing I do.’

And so let us not fill our minds with vain hopes which, whether they be fulfilled or not, will not satisfy us, but lift our eyes to and stay our anticipations on those glories beyond, as real as God is real, and as certain as His word is true. Let these hopes concentrate and define for us the aims of our life; and let the aims, clearly accepted and recognized, be pursued with earnestness, with ‘diligence,’ with haste, with the enthusiasm of which they, and they only, are worthy. Let us listen to our Master, ‘I must work the works of Him that sent Me while it is day; the night cometh.’ And let us listen to the words of the servant, which reverse the metaphor, and teach the same lessen in a trumpet call which anticipates the dawn and rouses the sleeping soldiers: ‘The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.’

Perseverance – Example Of

anecdotal stories

Matthew 10:22, “You will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved.”

Hebrews 10:35-36, “Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised.”

They Showed It Can Be Done

When he first began playing his guitar and singing, Elvis Presley’s schoolmates derisively coined a term to describe its bad quality: “Elvised it.” Later the teenage Presley repeatedly drove a company truck past the Memphis Recording Service before scrounging the courage to record a song he had written for his mother.

Eighteen years elapsed from the time Columbus conceived his voyage of discovery and fulfilled it by weighing anchor in Palos Bay. Eighteen years of poverty, ridicule, and disappointment.

Elena Bonner typed and edited as her husband, Andrei Sakharov, wrote his memoirs, which they smuggled from the Soviet Union. As he wrote, the KGB often stole the writing. It would simply vanish. On one occasion, when he learned of a particularly severe loss, Sakharov “had the expression of a man who has just learned of the death of someone close to him,” Elena wrote. After a few days, however, he sat at his desk and rewrote the material.

Why then would we refuse our faith just because it makes demands on our time, talent, and treasure? Or refuse a new challenge because “we have never done that before”? Or get discouraged because we sang or taught badly, or it seems we are closer to our goals than we were years ago? If Christians have a talent for anything, it should be to finish what they begin. Jesus did.

Just Another Court Case?

anecdotal stories
The first thing I remember when I woke up was sitting on a bench in the waiting room of what I thought to be a court house. I couldn’t remember how I got here. The doors opened and I was instructed to come in and have a seat by the defense table.

As I looked around I saw the prosecutor. He was a normal looking gent who just looked at me then went about his business. In fact he looked like a pretty nice guy. He could have been my best friend. He definitely didn’t seem to be what you would think of as a prosecutor in any way.

I sat down and looked to my left and there sat my defense attorney, a kindly and gentle looking man who was soft spoken and whose appearance seemed to be familiar to me. I felt I knew him. He was my defense attorney so of course, I must know him.

The corner door flew open and there appeared the Judge in full flowing robes. He commanded an awesome presence as he moved across the room. You could tell that he was in charge of his courtroom. I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. He was of great stature and had a powerful presence.

As he took his seat behind the bench, without any formality, he said, “Let us begin.”

as prosecutionThe prosecutor rose and stated his name and said, “I am here to show you why this man deserves to be convicted and be sentenced to death.”

He proceeded to tell of lies that I told, things that I had stolen, and when I had cheated others. The prosecutor told of other horrible perversions that were once in my life and the more he spoke, the further down in my seat I sank. So much of it I didn’t think anyone knew about. I was so embarrassed that I couldn’t look at anyone, even my own attorney, as the accuser told of wrongs that even I had completely forgotten about.

As upset as I was at him for telling all these things about me, I was equally upset at my attorney who sat there silently not offering any form of defense at all.  There were no objections, nothing to stop the Judge from hearing of all of my wrong doings. I know I had been guilty of those things, but I had also done a lot of good and noble things – couldn’t that at least cancel out some of the harm I’d done?

The prosecution finished with a fury and said, “This man belongs put to death, he is guilty of all that I have charged and there is not a person who can prove otherwise.”

When it was his turn, my attorney first asked if he might approach the bench.

The Judge allowed this over the strong objection of the prosecutor, and beckoned him to come forward. As my attorney got up and started walking, I was able to see him dressed in a simple suit, nothing fancy or expensive such as the prosecutor wore.

He stopped at the bench and softly said something to the Judge, and then he turned to address the court. “The prosecution was right in all of these allegations. And, yes, the penalty of my client’s crimes is death, and this man deserves to be punished.”

I was stunned, if I could have sunk lower I would have as tears started to fill my eyes, there didn’t seem to be any hope or defense. But then my attorney took a deep breath and turned to the Judge with outstretched arms and proclaimed, “However, I died on the cross so that this person might have eternal life and he has accepted Me as his Savior, so he is Mine.” He continued with, “His name is written in the Book of Life and no one can snatch him from Me. Satan, the accuser, the prosecutor of mankind, still does not understand yet. This man is not to be given justice, but rather mercy.”

As Jesus sat down, He quietly paused, looked at His Father and said, “There is nothing else that needs to be done. I’ve done it all. And Father, you have said that NO ONE can take them from my hands whom you have given Me.”

The Judge lifted His mighty hand and slammed the gavel down. The following words bellowed from His lips . . . “This man is free. The penalty for him has already been paid in full by My Son.  Case dismissed.”

as verdict

As my Lord led me away, I could hear Satan ranting and raving, “I won’t give up, I will win the next one.”

I asked Jesus as He gave me my instructions where to go next, “Have you ever lost a case?”

Christ lovingly smiled and said, “Everyone who has come to Me and asked Me to represent
them has received the same verdict as you, “NOT GUILTY – PAID IN FULL.”

Just another court case???

In a world where there is insurance for everything including insurance for legal needs, it’s nice to know there is some ETERNAL legal insurance and it’s free. It’s just a matter of retaining our Attorney in advance. It’s easy and it’s free!

Prayer For Healing, Strength and Comfort

Dearest Heavenly Father;

I know and not just believe that Your wisdom and knowledge reach higher than the heavens themselves, for they stretch out throughout our universe. It is so far beyond my feeble ability to comprehend and even understand and yet that is what makes You God Almighty. I can do nothing but praise, exalt and glorify You in all that I say AND do! You are more than worthy of that meager sacrifice from my lips and heart.

Today however, I come to You on behalf of my Brothers and Sisters, Your children and especially those today who are hurting or ill in their physical being. I personally can think of many, but Lord, You above anyone knows the true nature of the things that are attacking Your children. Those hurting with cancers and other diseases, I lift up to You and ask You to impart to them hope, comfort and a deep spiritual joy.

I especially lift up to You those suffering from colds and the flu, whatever flu they suffer from. Lord I know the situation in our world today does not escape Your attention and You, O Lord are STILL ever present on Your Throne and I acknowledge that! Lord, with all the political scams, deceit and corruption going on, You know the truth concerning the health of Your servants despite what a compromised medical establishment and politics say and Lord I know, beyond doubt that You have Your children’s best interests in mind with Your plan for each and every one of us individually. Again, I ask, most sincerely, yet most humbly, to give peace in our minds, assurance that yes, You ARE in control, comfort in our hearts, strength to fight the symptoms in our bodies and continued courage to stand for You no matter what the situation appears to look like.

holy spirit invitationI pray that Your Holy Spirit will continue to lead and guide, to instruct and correct where needed. Your Spirit is always leading in a firm yet gentle manner and it is always evident that Your unconditional love is behind Your guidance. Continue, I pray, to open our hearts and spirit to Your gift of discernment, not just for our individual awareness and protection but also for the sake of Your Body as a whole.

Father, if I have offended anyone, and especially unintentionally, I pray that You will forgive me. Lord, help me to continue to forgive those in whom I feel may have slighted me, for I want nothing what so ever to come between my Brothers and Sisters or between them and You as well as me and You. Help me in this regard to love more as You, Yourself love and ARE Love.

Dearest Heavenly Father, I know that You ALWAYS hear mine and other’s prayers and that You are more than willing to answer. I pray that Your will always be accomplished and that in all I do and say, that You be glorified. I humbly and sincerely ask all this in the Name of Your Precious Son, my Savior, Jesus Christ!

Amen and AMEN!

Jude Verses 22-23

Jude 1:22-23, “And on some have compassion, making a distinction; but others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.”

Continuing on Jude starts this next verse with the word, AND. Some manuscripts don’t but this shows that it is a definite continuation of thought from the previous verse. He is expounding even more with what he established in the previous verse. If you remember, he was warning or exhorting believers to stay centered and walking in the love of God. This keeps us focused and on the right path, but our duties are only beginning with our walk and our position or relationship with the Father.

We stay in the love of God, our Father, so that we may be the vessels He created to influence and to win others who are lost in sin. Remember, we weren’t saved, or born-anew, just to be able to say “I’m going to heaven.” On the contrary, we are to follow in the footsteps AND the commands of Jesus to make more disciples, not of or for ourselves, but for Christ Himself. We are in essence His ambassadors, of Him, the Father AND the Kingdom of Heaven. This takes witnessing, or sharing our testimonies with others of the things we KNOW and believe concerning Christ Jesus and the Good News of the Gospel.

However, we need to also recognize that when it comes to apostasy, of which Jude is writing about, there needs to be some spiritual discernment in the areas and the people to which we are addressing. For instance, the Scriptures are very clear concerning how we are to treat or handle those who are pressing or spreading their propaganda of false teaching and cults.

In the Epistle of 2 John verses 10-11, the Scriptures state, “If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.” When I was a young man starting out and still learning the basics of the Word of God, I used to let the Jehovah Witnesses come and give their spiel, but then I would give them what true Bible says about salvation. Yeah, I was a bit cocky and thought I would be able to convert THEM and that is the reason I even searched their so-called bible which isn’t even a true translation. It wasn’t even a paraphrase, yet, no matter how hard they tried, I believe it was the Holy Spirit, the truth is even found within their Bible. See, they had to make it at least somewhat true to get others unschooled and gullible in the Word to win them over!

preaching other gospels

However, I soon learned more of the Scriptures including the one in 2 John and realized I wasn’t going to change their thinking without some form of miracle. The truth is, they also marked our home as one to avoid because after a couple of times, they stopped coming by and simply passed by! But to a great degree they ARE not just false teachers but also apostates, because they do have the truth, at least concerning salvation right at their fingertips and they refuse to acknowledge the leading of the Holy Spirit.

But we need to consider those who have been innocently misled by falsehoods in their search for the truth. Some choose outright to believe in a lie, but there are those that are “charmed” as it were by the teaching that may to the uninitiated seem reasonable. So in speaking of those who have been innocently deceived, Jude gives us as believers, a couple of distinctions on how to approach them.

The New King James and the older King James versions state that we are to have compassion on some while the New American Standard and some others state to have mercy on them. The meaning is basically the same, but what is missing without a little bit of digging is we can show a compassionate interest, a love for them on an eternal basis that will motivate us to guide, lead or counsel them out of doubts and contradictions towards the divine truth of the Good News of Christ Jesus. In other words, we don’t approach them with bitterness or contempt, but rather a reflection of the Heavenly Father’s love for them when it comes to eternal consequences. This is what discipleship and effective witnessing is for. We attempt, out of love for those misled, to replace their doubts and concerns with firm conviction, by CONVINCING them of the truth. Now you have to understand at this point, this demands a knowledge of the Word of God, being the workman and the vessel that God through the Holy Spirit has chosen to use.

Our lives should be an open book and it should read exactly like the Bible! Remember, we aren’t just talking about some group dynamic or some religious fad, but rather we are talking about eternal consequences that will eventually lead to life or death forever.

fires of judgment

Jude goes on to explain that others may need to be snatched from the very fires of judgment and one interpretation reads by sharing with them the fear of the coming judgment. I myself have always found that you win more people with “honey” than you do with “vinegar” as the old saying goes. I’ve seen too many reactions that are negative when you continue to spout “brimstone, hell-fire and damnation.” I’m not saying there might not be an appropriate time for using that kind of “fear” but I am saying you gain a lot more by sharing with them the secrets of God’s unconditional love for them.

When I was first “saved,” it was in a small Pentecostal church and my first Pastor was FULL of hell-fire and damnation and I will tell you this, since he was preaching to mainly saved believers already, it had a tendency of leaving one empty and wanting something more. The next Pastor taught primarily on God’s love and I had never been subject to messages like his before. It changed my whole outlook as well as my perspective on Who God the Father truly is. Don’t get me wrong, he taught on judgment also when needed, but instead of a God standing over you with a wooden spanking paddle, you were able to envision a loving Father just waiting to scoop you up into His waiting arms! It helped me to truly see the character and nature of God, Himself in the Word, including the sometimes hard to read Old Testament! I recognized a Heavenly Father that wanted us to “win the race” rather than One standing over us just waiting for us to make a mistake.

So there are times when we need to witness with strong, resolute warnings and instruction. This is where the spiritual discernment is so important. If we attempt to “save” them in our own efforts, no matter the motive, we will most certainly fail, for we NEED the guidance, counsel and leadership of the Holy Spirit!

But with his admonitions, Jude also gives us warning. This is where the importance in walking in the love of God is so needed. We are to be careful not to be tempted into any types of sin they might be associated with and we need to remember, WITH compassion, they are still sinners themselves. We approach them as God’s creation Whom He loves, but remembering that God still abhors and hates the sin that we do. We need to be careful that we reflect Christ when witnessing rather than trying to win them over by reflecting the world.

reflecting Christ

Jude says it this way; “hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.” If you remember in the Old Testament times the clothing of a leper was considered contaminated and had to be burned. Leprosy has always been analogous with sin and thus whatever touches the flesh is defiled. We need to remember that principle and not let our footing become shaky or unsecure. Again, we maintain that by walking in the love of God.

You know in so many Christian and even religious circles it has become such a cliché to “love the sinner, but hate the sin.” The problem is that in the process of “hating” the sin, we tend to also hate by our demeanor and demonstration, the person as well. We do not have to condone sinful behavior even in the slightest, but we always need to keep uppermost in our minds the love God has for His Creation, even the wayward. We need to remember that Christ’s love reach us when WE were in that same wayward state! Jesus associated with sinners in order to win them, but He NEVER stooped to their levels. He always did what He could to show them by demonstration that there is a better way! We have to walk in that same example.

No, it is not easy at first. Even the disciples that walked with Jesus HAD to learn over time. But with the Holy Spirit’s help and determination to follow HIS leading, they learned. We have the same opportunity, but we have to remain focused on the Lord and the leading of His Holy Spirit.

When dealing with people who in essence are defiled because they are still living in sin, we have to remain focused and careful through vigilance, to avoid anything which might prove to be a temptation in our own lives. The best way to avoid falling into temptation is to stay away from any source that could or might tempt you.

As TRUE born-again, spirit-renewed Christians, followers of Christ Jesus, we are to pity and care for the person who knows no better and to do what is within our power to love them and demonstrate God’s love. BUT, at the same time, we need to remember always that God, our Heavenly Father, abhors and disdains any sin. Our motivation, should be to love others into eternity!

et into eternity

Next post we will conclude with Jude verses 24-25.

Trouble – Friends Causing

anecdotal stories

Isaiah 52:5, “Now therefore, what do I have here,” declares the LORD, “seeing that My people have been taken away without cause?” Again the LORD declares, “Those who rule over them howl, and My name is continually blasphemed all day long.”

Acts 5:12-13, “At the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were taking place among the people; and they were all with one accord in Solomon’s portico. But none of the rest dared to associate with them; however, the people held them in high esteem.”

Friendly Fire

Friendly fire in the Gulf War brought unnecessary casualties to both American and British troops, accounting for a fourth of all Allied casualties. In 1994, with the Gulf War long over, American jets shot down two American helicopters over Iraq, mistaking them for the enemy. Friendly fire is a danger in war or in a war zone, despite intentional procedures to prevent it.

In Hawaii, December 7, 1941, three shipyard workers, on their way to Pearl Harbor, died from friendly fire. Five-inch shells shot at Japanese planes from the U.S. fleet hit the men’s car, destroying it and leaving them dead inside.

It is a short step from friendly fire casualties in battle to the needless suffering Christians inflict on one another. In a kingdom ruled by the Prince of Peace, to whom each subject yields allegiance, interpersonal mayhem should be the exception where it is all too often the rule. Christians seem to forget when with their peers the manners they sensibly show when with the unsaved. Forgiveness, tolerance, and patience should as clearly characterize our feelings for each other as for the lost. We cannot hide our private wars from the public forever. In fact, our inability to love one another has been as deadly as the breath of Rappaccini’s daughter. Sadly, it has made skeptics of those who hear us say that God loves them.
