No “Off the Grid” In God’s Kingdom

A man who isolates himself seeks his own desire; He rages against all wise judgment. – Proverbs 18:1.

For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body–whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free–and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. For in fact the body is not one member but many. If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling? But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased. And if they were all one member, where would the body be? But now indeed there are many members, yet one body. – 1 Corinthians 12:12-20.

This is bound to breed a little controversy and I didn’t start out that way. In fact, it would have been even more controversial if I had put the title I first wanted, “There Will Be No Hermits In God’s Kingdom.”

In all honesty, the concept or idea came to me the other day after prayer when I was meditating on a couple of portions of the Word. I thought at first it might have been due to some television shows touting the romance of living “off the grid” like so many people seem to be trying to do. There are a lot of Discovery Channel shows and National Geographic shows that depict those that are living off by themselves (for the most part) and they all have a tendency to brag, yes brag, about their self-sufficiency and willingness to suffer at any cost to not be tied down by society.

The fact is, my wife and I haven’t watched any of those shows in a long time, but I did run across that Scripture found in Proverbs 18:1 and after checking it out in various Bible versions and looking at a couple of commentaries, I finally “bit the bullet” and pulled up one of my Hebrew English Lexicons and decided to check out the original term for the New King James Version word for isolates. Now you have to understand that checking out word meanings and usages still demands that you apply the context with which they were put into place or translated.

pd proverbs 18_1

It literally means to: divide, as in to separate one from another. It can be used to indicate a river branching off of a main course, or it could me the same as when Lot, the nephew of Abram (Abraham) separated himself from his kinsman and chose the well-watered land of the Jordan.

Actually there is a whole lot of meaning in that original word meaning to divide, be separated, apart from, etc. The gist of Proverbs 18:1 though makes itself pretty clear and straightforward. Those who isolate themselves from others, do so usually out of selfish desires and it usually, if not always demonstrates poor judgment.

Now to steer your thinking back to the term or title, Hermit, which I was going to use. I did some study on that term and it is often used to denote those who go into voluntary solitary isolation for the sake of religious observances such as prayer, fasting and so on. In fact here is a list of synonyms that are associated with the actual word hermit; recluse · solitary · loner · ascetic · anchorite · anchoress · eremite · stylite.

This lifestyle is mainly associated with monastic style living and to be honest, I knew this could open up a whole “can of worms” as it were. Most of those recognized as “Christian” hermits are in secular encyclopedias, Catholic and Orthodox History, (Some Jewish traditions do mention hermits), and I’m sorry if it offends, but I won’t go into what I call tainted or suspicious history of the early church at this time. That is a lesson for a much different time. Let’s concentrate on the point of the lesson.

To get back on point concerning the solitary or isolated lifestyle so enamored by many, it is no where advocated in the Scriptures except in the very limited reference to “getting away for a time for prayer and/or fasting,” and that is usually in reference to marriage (1 Corinthians 7:5). It in no way indicates a voluntary isolation from society as a whole.

The whole trouble with living a life away from others, in complete isolation is not the fact that you can pray in a more focused way; rather, the problem is that if you are truly praying and seeking God (true prayer is two-way communion), then He is bound to give you instruction concerning ways to demonstrate love toward your fellow man and you can’t demonstrate Godly love if you have isolated yourself and withdrawn from the very ones who would benefit from that service!

pd two way prayer

You might think you are getting closer to God, (and I’m not say you wouldn’t) but God created each of us for a purpose according to His will and I’m sure the closer you would get to Him, the more you would want to be around more of His creation. Yes, getting closer and more intimate with Him is extremely important and even more so IF we mature as Christians. But that same intimacy has a tendency to create in us a more Christ-like nature and that nature yearns to be of service and help to others in an unselfish way. You can’t accomplish that if you are a loner and isolated.

The other thing about isolating yourself in such a way is that the Bible attributes that tendency to selfishness and selfishness is exactly opposite of Godly love. You just cannot have both. Again, as Jesus stated when speaking of two masters (yes He was speaking about love of money, but He was stating a spiritual principle as well – See James 4:4), you can’t serve two masters. It’s either God, or self, not both.

The other thing that stands out against that concept as being in God’s will for a person, is that when you accept Christ Jesus into your life and you surrender your life and will to Him, He sends to dwell within each of us the Holy Spirit that He promised. The Holy Spirit is the manifestation of Him and the Father for the Father is Spirit. Jesus knew that in the body, He could walk with His disciples and guide them and teach them, but only so far as limited by getting close to each. However, by sending His Spirit, He can be a part of everyone that becomes His disciple and dwell with them all the time! This was always part of the Father’s plan. It is a part of our redemption and it is an amazing and miraculous part of abiding in Christ.

The thing is, when that happens, you are a new creation as the Apostle Paul stated. We become a part of the overall, whole Body of Christ with Jesus as the Head, that which directs us and motivates and leads us. We are individually members with certain gifts as Paul wrote in the verses above, but we are ALL a part of the Body, that is IF, if we have accepted and surrendered to Christ. You can’t be a part of the Body, if you choose to be a loner. It would be the same thing as if you were to amputate your hand and leave it on your desk. Yes, it’s still your hand, but it isn’t any good for anything AND it doesn’t and can’t get any “signals” or instructions from the head! There is no spiritual gift that relies on solitary existence, at least not a voluntary one.

pd needing one another

I guess what I really wanted to convey is that we so need one another. If you are truly a Christian, a follower and disciple of Jesus and you are striving to be more and more like Him everyday, you desire fellowship and the company of your Brothers and Sisters. The truth is that when we accepted Christ as Savior and Redeemer, we did just need Christ Jesus, we needed Christ in one another!

Remember what Jesus commanded the disciples around Him? Go out and make more disciples of Christ. Jesus was telling them to gather in brothers and sisters and teach them to gather in brothers and sisters and so on. Remember when Jesus told Simon (Peter) and his brother Andrew to “follow Him and He was going to make them fishers of men.”? (Matthew 4:19). I don’t believe that mission has really ended. Jesus told them to continue that same thing in others when He told them to make disciples.

So you see, there just can’t be any loners in God’s Kingdom. The only ones that will be “off the grid” when it comes to eternity, are going to be those who have rejected God and chose NOT to follow after Him and His plans.

Amazing Grace – A.W. Tozer

thought of day header

For Tuesday April 26, 2022:

AMAZING GRACE

Ephesians 2:7 (NKJV)
But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting On those who fear Him,
And His righteousness to children’s children.

For us who stand under the disapproval of God, who by sin lie under sentence of God’s eternal, everlasting displeasure and banishment, grace is an incomprehensibly immense and overwhelming plenitude of kindness and goodness. If we could only remember it, we wouldn’t have to be played with and entertained so much. If we could only remember the grace of God toward us who have nothing but demerit, we would be overwhelmed by this incomprehensibly immense attribute, so vast, so huge, that nobody can ever grasp it or hope to understand it.

Would God have put up with us this long if He had only a limited amount of grace? If He had only a limited amount of anything, He wouldn’t be God. . .

God’s immensity, God’s infinitude must mean that the grace of God must always be immeasurably full. We sing “Amazing Grace”—why, of course it’s amazing! How can we comprehend the fullness of the grace of God?

Daily Prayer & Praise for 4/25/2022

Prayer for Monday 4-25-2022

Lord our God, we thank You with all our hearts that Jesus Christ still lives today and that we may believe in Him and call upon Him as our Savior. We thank You for Him Who sees to the depths of our human misery and calls right into the midst of it, “Do not be afraid. I am with you. I live. I am your helper. No matter how insignificant you are, fear not, for I, Jesus Christ, shine into all the darkness, even into the darkness of sin and death, into all the judgment that has fallen or is still to come upon everyone on Earth.” Praise to Your name, Lord our God! You are great and almighty and beyond our understanding. But You have sent us the Savior Whom we can understand, and we rejoice that we may have community with Him, Jesus Christ, in Your presence.

Amen.

The Cry of the Heathen – C.H. Spurgeon

thought of day header

For Monday April 25, 2022:

THE CRY OF THE HEATHEN

Acts 16:9 (NKJV)
And a vision appeared to Paul in the night. A man of Macedonia stood and pleaded
with him, saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.”

There is no fear of any one becoming improvidently liberal. You need not be frightened that anyone here will give a thousand pounds this morning. We provide ample accommodation for those who feel inclined to do so. If anyone should be overtaken with such an enormous fit of generosity, we will register and remember it. But I fear there are no people like Barnabas now. Barnabas brought all he had, and put it into the treasury. “My dear friend, do not do that; do not be so rash.” Ah! he will not do that; there is no necessity for you to advise him. But I do say again, if Christianity were truly in our hearts; if we were what we professed to be; the men of generosity whom we meet with now and hold up as very paragons and patterns would cease to be wonders, for they would be as plentiful as leaves upon the trees. We demand of no man that he should beggar himself; but we do demand of every man who makes a profession that he is a Christian, that he should give his fair proportion, and not be content with giving as much to the cause of God as his own servant. We must have it that the man who is rich must give richly. We know the widow’s mite is precious, but the widow’s mite has been an enormously great loss to us. That widow’s mite has lost Jesus Christ many a thousand pounds. It is a very good thing in itself; but people with thousands a year talk of giving a widow’s mite. What a wicked application of what never can apply to them. No; in our proportion we must serve our God.

Moral Attributes of God – 3

*Pastor’s Note: Remember because of the need to explain at times in detail, the lessons will have to be divided up into parts.

Part Three

In the last lesson we left off with the Moral Attribute of God’s Love. Remember, God is Love and thus Love, true, Agape is God. They cannot be separated.

To remind the readers and especially concerning the Attributes of God that can be imitated, at least to an extent, I want to reiterate the Apostle Paul’s statement in his letter to the Ephesians:

“Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.” – Ephesians 5:1-2.

As I stated before or at least hinted at, I believe that the following attributes that we study are based on and stem from the fact that God IS love. Thus, without love, none of the following attributes would exist in God and by that token, God would NOT be a God Who is love. As you follow along and do your own study of God’s Nature and Character and especially what many call the Communicable Attributes, those that can be imitated, realize that to some degree this is a departure from other teaching because I believe, again, without God BEING Love, you couldn’t have these attributes. I believe these are a further manifestation of not only Him as Love, but of His actions to Love and thus it applies to us as well.

JUSTICE: I would add for clarity of thought this would include “Just-ness,” His Being JUST and also Righteousness. In the Bible and through the many translations derived from the original languages for Justice, the word righteousness is most often interchangeable. So when speaking of Justice, we are also speaking of God’s pure and unadulterated “rightness” or ability to always do and say the right thing no matter what.

Abstract,Sun,Beam,Line,Light,Shining,Through,The,Clouds,,Sunbeam

Remember the first attribute we discussed was Holiness, or the pure nature of God Himself to be absolute without spot, impartiality, etc., or as James states in his Epistle, “With whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” (James 1:17). This simply means that in God He does not change on a whim or shift as do shadows in the light, for God Himself IS light (1 John 1:5), there is no shadow or darkness in Him. His BEING Holy dictates every other attribute about Him, within Him, is pure and undefiled. Thus, His Love is pure and holy and so His other attributes must be as well.

Justice as an attribute of God is devoid of all and any passion or whimsy. God does not base anything He does on emotion, change of emotion or impulse. His justice vindicates by affirming, demonstrating, proving, defending and justifying rather than being vindictive; spiteful, vengeful, mean-spirited and unforgiving.

Because of this attribute, if there IS a difference in God’s righteousness and His justice, it would be in the sense that His righteousness demonstrates His absolute love for holiness and in His justice, His absolute hatred and abhorrence of sinfulness. So it can be said that in God’s justice, He always acts according to His righteousness. The one cannot be divorced from the other.

There is absolutely no unjustness within God. If you think of it, He REWARDS everyone according to their ways. If people sin and disobey God, they are rewarded according to what they deserve due to disobedience. He does not “punish” based on emotion, or the “level” of the sin. To Him ALL sin, ANY sin, deserves its JUST reward; banishment from His presence. He doesn’t stop loving the person who sins, but His Love for all demands that those who sin, have made their choice as to their “reward.” Because God IS Love, He can’t stop loving His creation, but that doesn’t mean He isn’t also saddened by their own choices. His righteousness demands that He follows through with a sinner’s “reward.” Otherwise, He would NOT be just OR righteous.

When you think on it, it also shows His love to those who DO follow after Him in obedience. What kind of love would it be, let alone justice or righteousness to let a guilty party off from their sins, while demanding that those who follow after righteousness are doing what is expected through obedience?

Which leads to the “other side of the coin,” so to speak, concerning rewards. Just as God is impartial and unemotional concerning those who walk in guiltiness, He is the same way towards those who walk in obedience and righteousness. Emotion does not enter the picture where God is concerned, He already Loves His creation. His justice though demands that His actions toward the obedient be righteous in according to their obedience. Thus those walking in obedience and righteousness themselves are vindicated, redeemed, affirmed, absolved, acquitted, etc., you get the picture.

pd no injustice

With God being just, actions MUST demand appropriate consequences for true love to exist. The RIGHT or righteous circumstance must be applied to any situation. This does NOT remove our ability to make choices though if you are thinking the “system” is rigged. We ALL, everyone of us has the ability to choose how we want to live our lives. Will we choose to rely upon our own intellect and reason, or will we choose to rely upon the very ONE that created us for a purpose? The choice has always been and still is, ours!

Even in this natural world, laws and rules have been set forth to cause the interaction of mankind to get along in an orderly way. A person has a choice whether to go along with them or not. But those choices have consequences. In the natural, the application of the justice used to “reward” a person’s actions may not be perfect by any means, but God is Sovereign and Supreme and His actions will ALWAYS be perfect.

It has been stated that:

Just as divine love is not the same as human love, so divine righteousness is not the same as human righteousness. But just as human love can correspond to divine love, so human righteousness can anticipate and foreshadow divine righteousness.

Human righteousness is conformity to the universal dictates of conscience. It means giving each person his or her due or deepening respect for human dignity and freedom. Divine righteousness is bringing people into a right relationship with one another and with God. Social justice is guaranteeing that the rights and just claims of people are duly satisfied. Divine righteousness is making people willing to forego their rights and claims for the sake of another. Social justice is preventing the wounds that estrange people from each other from festering by the resort to law and force. Divine righteousness brings healing to these wounds.[1]

So let’s make something clear; because God is always just and always right, depending on our choices, we will all receive a just “reward.” Now, I’m not trying to be clever or anything of the sort when I use the word “reward.” However, you understand that a reward is based upon our character, motives and choices leading to our actions. If we follow the path of disobedience, in essence our “reward” is applied in the form of a debt. We OWE for the actions we took that were contrary to the right and just commands of God. In other words, punishment or the reward for sinning, is a matter of debt. Sin MUST be paid for; plain and simple.

pd owed a debt

God cannot refrain from the principle of His righteous and just Nature by ignoring the “rewards” that go with sinning! But here’s the thing:

It is a serious misunderstanding of Christianity and the nature of forgiveness to say that believers are those whose guilt is rescinded and whose sins are not punished. Our guilt and sin were fully imputed to our substitute, Jesus, who suffered the retributive justice in our stead.[2]

Here’s why I keep saying “rewards”: Psalm 103:10 says this, “He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.” (NASB). The NKJV uses the word punish, but in the original language the word used actually means, to reward! It’s not often you think of a punishment as a reward, but consider it; it is something we have earned. Punishment has a negative connotation and reward seems more positive, but the truth is, it is what we deserve based on what we have done.

However, because of God’s justice AND righteousness which again is pure and undefiled, He made a way for that “reward,” that debt to be taken care of. It HAD to be paid, a righteous and just God cannot let it go, but it WAS paid, the debt was satisfied, we have been vindicated, justified, by the debt Jesus Christ stepped up and paid for each of us who accepts that payment!

Make no mistake though; you STILL have a choice. The payment for the debt owed, is free to all who are willing to accept it. It is a gift from the ONE Who loves us beyond measure. It satisfies God’s Justice and Righteousness, but it is STILL our choice to make.

In closing, understand this; the debt is paid and we can choose to accept it for what we individually owe, or we can choose to walk away from it. However, if you don’t accept the payment already made on your behalf, then YOU will be responsible for that debt. The “reward” for however you choose, is ETERNAL.

pd eternal consequences

Jeremiah’s Prayer – Let Us Pray

I am reading through the Book of Jeremiah again and I ran across his prayer at the end of chapter 10. Why it struck me so much this time around I’m not sure unless it is because prophecy and the state of the world is so much on my mind and especially in my prayers.

A couple years ago, I did a post on Daniel’s prayer as found in Daniel chapter 2 and thought this one is Jeremiah would be timely for this year.

Solomon, as The Teacher wrote in Ecclesiastes, “That which has been is what will be, That which is done is what will be done, And there is nothing new under the sun.” – Ecclesiastes 1:9 (NKJV).

And: “That which is has already been, And what is to be has already been; And God requires an account of what is past.” – Ecclesiastes 3:15 (NKJV).

In other words to paraphrase an old cliché, “If we don’t learn from the past, we are doomed to repeat the past.” As man is accountable for his past, so we will be accountable if we continue to repeat it.

It is very obvious to anyone who prays regularly and reads their Bible that human nature does NOT change, unless, and I repeat, unless, the Holy Spirit abides within a person and creates within them a “New Creation.” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

With that in mind, I have minimally adapted Jeremiah’s prayer to reflect what was, to what still is.

Let us pray:

Dearest Heavenly Father, Almighty God:

I know, LORD, that our lives are not our own. We are not able to plan our own courses, our own paths wisely. So correct me, discipline me and lead me LORD, but please be gentle. Do not correct or discipline me in anger, for I would be destroyed and die. Rather Lord, pour out Your wrath on the nations that refuse to acknowledge You – on those who outright reject You, on those peoples that do not call upon Your Holy Name.

LORD, in many ways they have devoured and tried to destroy Your children, those You call by name; they have devoured and consumed them, making the land a desolate wilderness filled with wickedness, corruption and all manner of evil things.

You have promised that those who live in the shelter of You, the Most High God, will find rest within Your shadow. You alone are our refuge, our place of safety; You are our God, and we will trust You. For You alone LORD will rescue us from every trap and protect us from deadly disease. We will take cover under Your feathers. We will find shelter under Your wings. Your faithful and unfailing promises are our armor and protection.

We thank You for everything we have and we are and we pray You be ever glorified and we ask these things for the sake of and in the Name of Jesus Christ.

Amen and AMEN.

Hope In The Messiah

prophetic words header wp

Pastor’s Note: God does NOT change and neither does the spirit of His Word. It is living and still relevant for each and every one of us today. With that thought in mind, remember the Prophetic words given by God’s Prophets and Teachers. The words STILL ring true! Do not be fooled into believing God’s Words and warnings were or are only for the children of Israel in ancient history.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-21, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.” KNJV (Bold emphasis, added).

P.S. Not ALL prophecies are dire warnings. Some are meant to bring hope to those looking to the Lord. But be aware, rejection of the God of Creation comes with its own consequences.

Remember when reading this; it HAS been fulfilled and it WILL again be fulfilled!

The times of darkness and despair will not go on forever. The who have rejected God Almighty will be humbled, but there will be a time in the future when all the nations will bow before the Lord and will be filled with His glory.

pw great lightThe people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in the land under deep darkness and despair, a light will once again shine. God will redeem the nation of Israel, and all nations who follow after Him, and all the peoples will rejoice in their salvation. They will rejoice before God as people rejoice at the gathering of a great harvest and like soldiers after a great victory. For God Almighty will break the yoke and burden of their slavery to sin and lift the heavy burdens of guilt and shame from their shoulders. The LORD will break the oppressor’s rod, the enemy of our souls and those who oppress the innocent just as He did when He destroyed the ancient armies that came against His people. The boots of the soldiers and the uniforms bloodstained and blackened by war will all be burned and destroyed. They will be only serving as fuel for the fire.

For a child has been born to us and the world, a son is given to all of us. The governments will rest on his shoulders with justice and righteousness and he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and rule and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David just as always promised once and for all for all eternity. The passionate commitment of God Almighty, our Heavenly Father and the Lord of Heaven’s Hosts will make this happen as He made His promises come true 2000 plus years ago!

Not Self-Image But Christ-Image

thought of day header

For Sunday April 24, 2022:

NOT SELF-IMAGE BUT CHRIST-IMAGE

Proverbs 11:2 (NKJV)
When pride comes, then comes shame; but with the humble is wisdom.

In Why Leaders Can’t Lead, popular management consultant Warren Bennis wrote, “Magnanimous and/or humble people are notable for their self-possession. They know who they are, have healthy egos, and take more pride in what they do than in who they are. They take compliments with a grain of salt and take intelligent criticism without rancor. Such people learn from their mistakes and don’t harp on the mistakes of others . . . True leaders are, by definition, both magnanimous and humble.”

Solomon agreed, saying that God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble (Proverbs 3:34). Humility precedes honor (Proverbs 15:33) and, when coupled with the fear of the Lord, brings “riches and honor and life” (Proverbs 22:4).

By humility, however, the Bible doesn’t mean a low self-image. We aren’t to put ourselves down or nurture an inferiority complex. We’re just to think of Jesus more often than we think of ourselves, and we’re to put the needs of others before our own. Today, try keeping a window before your face instead of a mirror.

Humility does not consist simply in thinking cheaply of oneself,
so much as in not thinking of oneself at all—and of Christ more and more.

Let Your Light Shine!

“No one, when he has lit a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed, but sets it on a lampstand, that those who enter may see the light.” – Luke 8:16 (Also Mark 4:21-22).

As I was praying this morning for some reason out of the blue, I had an image in my mind of a flashlight with its batteries. Now let me tell you, my wife Sue and I have several different kinds of flashlights, some very high intensity and some not so much so. The one that she likes to use at night when taking our dog, Bella out, is a high-intensity LED light that has various levels of light. The thing is, the battery is internal but it has to be charged to keep being able to be used in the darkness.

The same thing applies to any other light within your home or workplace. The bulb may be perfectly capable of producing light and illuminating an area, but if the power is not on or there is a break in the circuit between the power and the bulb, there will be no light no matter the intention of those who want to have illumination.

So it is with each of us who not only follow after the Lord Jesus Christ but are abiding in Him as well. We ARE to be a light in the darkness of the world once we have come to Christ Jesus. Sadly, however there are a lot of “flashlights” and “lamps” that have all the elements at the ready to produce light, but they have no power.

Without the necessary power, a light or lamp by itself is useless. The mechanism to produce light is there, but nothing can come from it. So it is with many who claim to be Christians and especially in the day and age we live in today.

The Apostle Paul wrote this in his letter or epistle to the Ephesians:pd ephesians 5_8

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. Therefore He says: “Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light.” – Ephesians 5:8-14.

According to this inspired word, we who are walking in Christ ARE light in the Lord. Our calling, our job or mission is to allow that light to shine on the darkness and expose it and its secrets for what they truly are. The truth can ONLY be revealed in the Light of Christ that shines from us and we can ONLY shine it forth if we are “plugged” in to the power source.

More or less Paul combines passages from the Old Testament to command Christians to “wake up, don’t remain dead or drained for it is Christ Who gives you power!” It is only as we are “plugged in” or abiding in Christ Jesus and being “powered up” by His Holy Spirit that we will have the ability AND capacity to be a light. He IS the power source for being the light in the world. As Jesus stated in the Gospel of Luke, we don’t hide the light, we don’t cover it, rather we bring it out to illuminate all that is around us.

It further stands to reason according to Jesus’ statement and even Paul’s that if we cover or hide our light we are in essence enabling the darkness around us. I love using this illustration because I have actually tried it before; if you strike a wooden match, just an ordinary kitchen match in a dark room, the light from that lowly match will bring light and illumination around itself. It doesn’t take a lot to chase the darkness away. So it is with those who have “plugged” in to the power source that allows our light to shine.

Again, it is our calling, it is a necessity to shine that light to the world that is filled with darkness. Paul in 2 Corinthians says this:

But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. – 2 Corinthians 4:3-6.

Now reread verse six; “For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”

pd 2cor 4_6

God, our Heavenly Father, Whom we KNOW through Jesus Christ has COMMANDED the light to shine out of darkness. This is not an option. If you ARE a Christian, a disciple of Christ Jesus, we are commanded to shine forth the light that IS Jesus Christ! That light gives to those who “see” it, as Paul puts it, “the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”

Now understand this, not everyone in darkness will acknowledge or “see” that light, but the reason for that comes down to personal choice. They CHOOSE to let the god of this world, the true enemy of their souls to leave them blinded for the simple reason is that they do NOT want to “see” or recognize the “glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” Again, they choose to remain blind and thus they can continue to stumble around in darkness.

That however, does not alleviate the fact that we are still commanded to shine forth the light of Christ Jesus. Notice that it is not within our power to change a person’s perception or their choices, it is only our duty to be obedient in what we have been given to do. We are obedient to shine forth the light so that mankind can see that they DO have choices. What they choose is still left to the individual.

The only way to remain “plugged in” so that we shine forth in power and illumination is to make sure that our batteries or our power source is fully charged. We do that in several ways. First, we have to continue to abide IN Christ and thus the Father. We accomplish that by prayer and communion. We cannot gain power at all without being “plugged in” to them. We are ONLY vessels, They are the source of power.

Second, we have to allow the Holy Spirit to live within. That takes surrender. It is not just a matter of acknowledging that Jesus came and He died. That is historical, it is not disputed. But He DID rise again and He did so that He might send His Spirit to abide in each and every one that accepts Him as Lord, Master and King of their lives.

When the Holy Spirit takes up residence within our hearts, He speaks to us in greater ways than our own consciences can. He truly becomes not just a Comforter to us, but a Counselor, a Teacher, a Guide. Everything that Jesus still is, is found within His Holy Spirit. It is in that indwelling that we receive power. Just as in the early days of the church. That has NOT changed. It is a spiritual promise. The difference is, do we “plug in” to that power and let it shine forth the light of Christ, or do we just walk around as if there is nothing different about us at all?

pd holy spirit

It still comes down to choices. Yes, if we are truly Christian, we chose Christ and He chose us. But that is not, nor will it ever be the ending of our choices. Do we choose to surrender to Him and all that He is and all that He wants us to be, or do we allow the “charging cable” to hang limply, just continuing to be a vessel with nothing inside? The CHOICE is each one of ours, individually. Think strongly on what you will choose! The world depends on it!

Prayer for Friday 4-22-2022

Exalted Almighty God, Who has given Your only Son to die for us, grant that we all who have been united in Your Spirit may continue to be cleansed from our past sins, known and unknown, and so strengthened to follow the example of Jesus’ most Holy Life, that we may hereafter be able to enjoy everlasting fellowship with You in Your Heavenly Kingdom, through Him Who loved us and gave Himself for us, through Jesus Christ and in His precious Name we ask.

Amen.

All Are Recipients – A.W. Tozer

thought of day header

For Friday April 22, 2022:

ALL ARE RECIPIENTS

Lamentations 3:22 (NKJV)
Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not.

All men are recipients of God’s mercy. Don’t think for a minute that when you repented and came back from the swine pen to the Father’s house that mercy then began to operate. No, mercy had been operating all the time. . . So, remember that if you hadn’t had the mercy of God all the time, stooping in pity, withholding judgment, you’d have perished long ago. The cruel dictator is a recipient of the mercy of God. The wicked murderer is a recipient of the mercy of God. And the blackest heart that lies in the lowest wallow in the country is a recipient of the mercy of God. . .

All men are recipients of the mercy of God, but God has postponed the execution, that is all. When the justice of God confronts human guilt then there is a sentence of death, but the mercy of God—because that also is an attribute of God, not contradicting the other but working with it—postpones the execution.

Mercy cannot cancel judgment apart from atonement. When justice sees iniquity, there must be judgment. But mercy brought Christ to the cross. I don’t claim to understand that. I’m so happy about the things I do know and so delightedly happy about things I don’t know.

Complete For The Master’s Service – Oswald Chambers

great sermons header
Oswald Chambers (July 24, 1874 – November 15, 1917) was an early-twentieth-century Scottish Baptist and Holiness Movement evangelist and teacher, best known for the devotional “My Utmost for His Highest.” Even as a teenager, Chambers was noted for his deep spirituality, and he participated in the evangelization of poor occupants of local lodging houses. At the same time, Chambers also demonstrated gifts in both music and art. While at Edinburgh, he felt called to ministry, and he left for Dunoon College, a small theological training school near Glasgow, founded by the Rev. Duncan MacGregor. Chambers was soon teaching classes at the school and took over much of the administration when MacGregor was injured in 1898.

But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them . . . . That the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. – 2 Timothy 3:14, 17

Am I learning how to use my Bible? The way to become complete for the Master’s service is to be well soaked in the Bible, some of us only exploit certain passages. Our Lord wants to give us continuous instruction out of His word; continuous instruction turns hearers into disciples. Beware of “spooned meat” spirituality, of using the Bible for the sake of getting messages; use it to nourish your own soul. Be a continuous learner, don’t stop short, and the truth will open to you on the right hand and on the left until you find there is no problem in human life with which the Bible does not deal. But remember that there are certain points of truth Our Lord cannot reveal to us until our character is in a fit state to bear it. The discernment of God’s truth and the development of character go together.

The life God places in the Christian worker is the life of Jesus Christ, which is continually changing spiritual innocence into glorious practical character.

The Unreachable

*Pastor’s Note: Here’s another poem from one of my favorite Christian poets. It was before Christmas last that I posted one of her poems so it is way beyond time, so here I offer you this poetry from Sister Deborah Ann Belka from her website, CHRISTian Poetry – By Deborah Ann. Please visit her site and be blessed, and remember to pray for her ministry (service) as part of the Body of Christ.

the unreachable - dab

Today more than ever,
we need ears teachable
ones that are opened
and to God reachable.

We need hearts to believe,
all things are possible
so they can to do for God
that which is impossible.

Today more than ever,
we need eyes insightful
ones who can be for God
astute and foresightful.

We need minds that know,
all about the end times
so they can be for God
a watchman of the signs.

Today, more then ever,
we need hearts teachable
minds that are insightful
to reach the unreachable!

Revelation 2:29

He that hath an ear,
let him hear what the
Spirit saith unto the churches.

Daily Prayer & Praise for 4/21/2022

Prayer for Thursday 4-21-2022

Oh Almighty and most merciful God, receive our humble prayers. We recognize that we are weak; but You are strong and gracious. We have left undone these past days many things which we were tasked with and should have accomplished, and we have done things which we possible should not have done; but You, dear Lord are faithful and just to forgive the sins of those who confess them to You for Christ’s sake.

Oh show us the light of Your countenance, and we shall be made whole. Guard us through the upcoming nights. Bless our nation, our schools, our homes and our families and loved ones as well as our friends; and grant to us those things which we have faithfully asked according to Your will, and whatever else we need, for the glory and merits of Your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, our Heavenly Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with each of us for evermore.

Amen.

The Carnal Mind – C.H. Spurgeon

thought of day header

For Thursday April 21, 2022:

THE CARNAL MIND

Romans 8:7 (NKJV)
The carnal mind is enmity against God.

Let me suppose an impossible case for a moment. Let me imagine a man entering heaven without a change of heart. He comes within the gates. He hears a sonnet. He starts! It is to the praise of his enemy. He sees a throne, and on it sits one who is glorious; but it is his enemy. He walks streets of gold, but those streets belong to his enemy. He sees hosts of angels; but those are the servants of his enemy. He is in an enemy’s house; for he is at enmity with God. He could not join the song, for he would not know the tune. There he would stand; silent, motionless; till Christ should say, with a voice louder than ten thousand thunders, “What doest thou here? Enemies at a marriage banquet? Enemies in the children’s house? Enemies in heaven? Get thee gone! Depart ye cursed, into everlasting fire in hell!” Oh! sirs, if the unregenerate man could enter heaven, I mention once more the oft-repeated saying of Whitefield, he would be so unhappy in heaven, that he would ask God to let him run down into hell for shelter. There must be a change, if you consider the future state; for how can enemies to God ever sit down at the banquet of the Lamb? And to conclude, let me remind you—and it is in the text after all—that this change must be worked by a power beyond your own. An enemy may possibly make himself a friend, but enmity cannot. If it be but an adjunct of his nature to be an enemy he may change himself into a friend; but if it is the very essence of his existence to be enmity, positive enmity, enmity cannot change itself. No, there must be something done more than we can accomplish.

Perseverance – When It Is Hard

anecdotal stories

Numbers 11:4-6, The rabble who were among them had greedy desires; and also the sons of Israel wept again and said, “Who will give us meat to eat? We remember the fish which we used to eat free in Egypt, the cucumbers and the melons and the leeks and the onions and the garlic, but now our appetite is gone. There is nothing at all to look at except this manna.”

10-15, Now Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, each man at the doorway of his tent; and the anger of the LORD was kindled greatly, and Moses was displeased. So Moses said to the LORD, “Why have You been so hard on Your servant? And why have I not found favor in Your sight, that You have laid the burden of all this people on me? Was it I who conceived all this people? Was it I who brought them forth, that You should say to me, ‘Carry them in your bosom as a nurse carries a nursing infant, to the land which You swore to their fathers’? Where am I to get meat to give to all this people? For they weep before me, saying, ‘Give us meat that we may eat!’ I alone am not able to carry all this people, because it is too burdensome for me. So if You are going to deal thus with me, please kill me at once, if I have found favor in Your sight, and do not let me see my wretchedness.”

1 Corinthians 16:8-9, But I will remain in Ephesus until Pentecost; for a wide door for effective service has opened to me, and there are many adversaries.

Staying When Quitting Is Easier

Coastwatcher Donald McFarland fled to the hills when the Japanese invaded Guadalcanal in 1942. Pursued, he receded deeper into the jungle and higher into the mountains. He had been ordered to remain in place because the Navy needed his intelligence reports on Japanese ship movements.

On July 28, 1942, he wrote to another coastwatcher that Japanese patrols sniffed dangerously close to his lair and he didn’t intend to stay until the tiger pounced. “But of course, he stayed,” Walter Lord wrote. “every once in a while a man discovers he can go beyond the limits he sets for himself . . .” His self-set deadline for leaving came, went, and found him in place. “We’ll hang on a few more days,” he wrote his friend again. “I suppose we must have faith.”

Serving Jesus in any capacity sometimes becomes burdensome. Immovable obstacles prevent growth, or people clamor for growth but refuse to change the traditions that prevent growth, or leaders with Diotrephes complex resist change. At such a time Jesus may want us to remain in place when we would rather move, to stay and offer solutions. He may ask teachers to keep Bible school classes they consider tiresome. He may ask lay leaders to remain in positions that have no future. Can we resist our heavenly Lord when others obey a secular ruler? Isn’t the awareness of His devotion to us, despite our ingratitude, enough to motivate us to serve Him, despite the difficulty?

Daily Prayer & Praise for 4/20/2022

Prayer for Wednesday 4-20-2022

Oh Almighty God, pardon, we beg of You, our sins and negligences during the past week. Help us in the future to struggle more successfully with the temptations by which we so easily seem to have been overcome by. Confirm and strengthen in us the good habits which You have enabled us to begin or carry out. Prosper the whole work of our lives to the increase of godliness and good learning within our communities and in our nation. Grant to us and bless us with the rest and ability to serve of You each and everyday day that You have given us as a Holy Day. Teach us to look on each week as a stage in our homeward journey towards Your glorious Kingdom; and ever draw us, Oh Lord, nearer to You in heart and soul, for Christ Jesus’ sake.

Amen.

Infinite Mercy – A.W. Tozer

thought of day header

For Wednesday April 20, 2022:

INFINITE MERCY

Psalm 103:17 (NKJV)
But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting On those who fear Him,
And His righteousness to children’s children.

There is an old story … about the Jewish rabbi centuries ago who consented to take a weary traveler into his house for a night’s rest.

After they had eaten together, the rabbi said, “You are a very old man, are you not?”

“Yes,” the traveler replied, “I am almost a century old.”

As they talked, the rabbi brought up the matter of religion and asked the visitor about his faith and about his relation to God.

“Oh, I do not believe in God,” the aged man replied. “I am an atheist.”

The rabbi was infuriated. He arose and opened the door and ordered the man from his house.

“I cannot keep an atheist in my house overnight,” he reasoned . . .

But then the voice of God said, “Son, I have endured him for almost 100 years—don’t you think you could endure him for one night?” . . .

It was the mercy of God that had endured the atheist for nearly 100 years.
