Philemon Introduction & Verses 1-3

I have read Philemon so many times and because it is such a short letter, it is so easy to skim over what is really important about the letter. Many times we look at something like this letter and right away make a judgment call as to how important it really is and then of course, we lose so much that we could actually glean from it.

Sure it’s a personal letter. Sure it’s an historical document, but it is so much more than that. For one thing, if you truly believe the Bible, the Whole Bible is the inspired, infallible Written Word of God (at least in its original meaning) then you can’t deny the fact that the letter to Philemon is and has been inspired by the Holy Spirit. Yes, the Apostle Paul wrote it to a friend and brother, but I hope to point out the wisdom and example of the Christ-like character that we are all commanded to imitate.

In this letter, Paul does just that and in doing so gives us a perfect example of how we are to treat one another but even more importantly how our treatment of one another should coincide with the Lord Jesus’ behavior and actions when He walked the roads throughout the Holy Land.

This letter shows us that the Apostle Paul didn’t just speak the words, but he also put them into practice himself and demonstrated that yes, we CAN be more like Jesus.

Now as far as a little background history, we are pretty certain that Paul is in prison in Rome when he wrote this letter. The time period varies between scholars who have studied his travels, but most are pretty positive this was during his travels to Rome in the early 60s AD. There are two other options that are most often discounted though as the time of this letter and that was when he was in prison in Ephesus in the mid 50s AD, and possible Caesarea in the very late 50s AD and maybe the very first turn to the 60s AD. Again however, his stay in Ephesus and Caesarea are most often dismissed and the majority of Bible Scholars believe it was his imprisonment in Rome.

This puts the writing of this letter much later in his life and it would explain one of the references he makes to being an “aged Paul.”

et paul writing

Paul is writing to a friend and one he considers a fellow worker in the Lord. But he is also addressing those who are assumed to be Philemon’s wife, Apphia and to Philemon’s son, Archippus. Beside this, he also addresses, “the church that meets in your house.” Though it is a personal letter, the reason he addresses the others besides just Philemon is because the nature of the letter will impact everyone he has addressed.

Philemon had a slave, Onesimus who ran away and in his attempt to get far, he actually came across the path of Paul. Through Paul, Onesimus was converted to Christianity and as happens with all true conversions, Onesimus’  life changed. In Paul’s eyes, Onesimus became as a son to him as Paul felt this way to most all who were converted to Christ through his ministry. Evidently though Onesimus was also a very welcome help while Paul was imprisoned.

Since during that time, most of the slaves were appointed their duties by the wives, and since the son was so close within the family unit and the church met there, Paul wanted to make sure nothing was being done or asked in secret. Paul was always conscious of being above-board with all of his dealings.

A word of note here; this is not a treatise on slavery per se. Slavery for the most part was, however, vastly different than what most of us are aware of during American Colonial times though there were some similar instances. For the most part, slavery was often voluntary to help pay off debts owed or to better one’s future life. It is not however known what the case was with Onesimus’ situation or circumstance.

Even though this is a letter of request, it is very much an instruction and a reference in how different classes in society should behave towards one another when it comes to a spiritual and a Christian sense. There were rules in place in society that kept classes apart, but Paul’s writing is very clear that IN Christ Jesus, the new lifestyle that is reborn within those saved through Christ Jesus leaves no room for class differences and in the eyes of Christ, Himself, there is no ethnicity, gender, class, etc. (Galatians 3:26-29).

Paul plays upon Philemon’s own conversion and his surrender to Christ himself to lay the foundation for a renewed relationship with Onesimus. How the Apostle does it is very intriguing and yet also very wise and Paul demonstrates that following after Christ Jesus and His example is not to be in words only, but actually in actions.

et faith in action

Again, there is so much depth for such a short letter and when you truly delve into and ask questions like who, what, when, where, why and how, you begin to see the intricacies of the Word and how it truly can relate in practical ways to our journey in this lifestyle of living and being in Christ.

Philemon 1:1-3, Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To Philemon our beloved friend and fellow laborer, to the beloved Apphia, Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Unlike some of Paul’s other greetings, he does not start out reminding of his spiritual authority as an Apostle. This is the one letter Paul does not begin with that but rather taking the “low-road” as it were and describing himself first and foremost as “a prisoner of Christ Jesus.” Remember, Paul IS imprisoned at this time for his efforts to spread the gospel of what the Jews and Roman authorities consider a “new” religion and one that is causing a stir within their occupied cities.

However, I need to remind the readers that Paul does not consider himself a prisoner of the state, by any means. He is looking beyond the emperor to the King of Kings as it were and thus even while imprisoned is continuing his mission to spread the gospel.

At this time he does acknowledge that Timothy, whom Paul considers a son and a loyal disciple is with him, though it is clear that it is the Apostle that is the primary writer and sender of the letter. Paul addresses Philemon as a BELOVED friend and fellow laborer and it is fitting because the name Philemon actually means “affectionate,” and it appears from what Paul writes further on Philemon’s character demonstrates the truth and nature of his name.

As stated in the introduction, Paul includes Apphia also as “beloved” and in some versions is added “our sister,” which would most undoubtedly indicate she and Philemon are together and actually co-workers in the Kingdom of God, therefore she is indeed a sister in Christ. This is why among Bible scholars it is very much assumed that she is Philemon’s wife and not that of a guest or even a relative.

et fellow soldier

He also addresses the letter to a young man named Archippus, as also being a part of the household and for that reason is assumed to be Philemon’s son. Paul also identifies him as a “fellow soldier” which coming from Paul is meant as an honor and it seems that Archippus is known for his Christian work and Paul made a point of acknowledging him probably due to a note that he addressed concerning his work in the closing salutation to the Colossians found in Colossians 4:17.

Interestingly enough, this opening greeting can give us a glimpse, possibly, into the early New Testament church, due to the fact that if these three are indeed a family, it gives us an insight because of how the Apostle adds “and to the church in your house.” It is most likely the meeting place for fellow believers in order for them to gather in worship, prayer and even Bible study and reading. As hinted in the Introduction, you can see how many may be influenced by Paul’s request to Philemon.

So it appears that Paul’s inclusion of the church meeting in Philemon’s home is to not just prepare a path for reconciliation for Onesimus, but also demonstrates in advance, that ALL Christians are brothers and sisters on equal footing and standing when it comes to the true Church.

Now as far as Paul’s usual greeting, I am sure that he gives it to those that he truly loves with all the best intentions and he packs a whole lot of meaning from the very gospel he teaches into it. We often read a greeting like this and just pass over it without giving it any thought, but I’m going to show you the depth behind this greeting.

As you know, GRACE means all the undeserved, the unmerited favor that God bestows upon those who believe and follow after Him. PEACE is that inner calmness, the serenity AND assurance which tends to stabilize and create a foundation for those gifted with God’s grace. Paul is reminding the reader that both, the grace and the peace come from One source, God the Father AND God, the Lord Jesus Christ! Now think about it. This has a lot of meaning despite it seeming so simple. It means, as confirmed in so many other Scriptures as well as the Words of Jesus Himself, that the Lord Jesus Christ is EQUAL with God the Father in gifting grace and peace! As I once read a long time ago, it would be blasphemy to give such honor to Christ if He were not truly and fully God.

Again, we see the Oneness of God in the Trinity. God is ONE, but He IS the Father, He IS the Son and He IS the Holy Spirit! Awesome to think about and meditate on!

et father son spirit

Next post we will begin with Philemon verse 4.

Daily Prayer & Praise 5/05/2022

Prayer for Thursday 5-5-2022

Lord our God, we are not worthy of all the mercy and faithfulness You show to us. We thank You for Your love and ask You to keep our hearts united in the hope we have together for all things. Keep our hearts united, that again and again we can receive something new from Your mighty hand. Keep us true to the calling You have given us. Let light shine out into the world, right into the dark places. Remember those all over the world who are sighing to You, longing that in Your great and wonderful goodness light may come to the peoples and to the nations through some deed from Your hand. We ask these requests in Jesus’ name.

Amen.

Daily Prayer & Praise 5/04/2022

Prayer for Wednesday 5-4-2022

Dear Father in Heaven, we thank You for guiding us on all our ways with power from on high. We thank You that again and again You have led us through the darkness on a path of light. Looking back, we cannot be thankful enough. May our hearts turn to You and be filled with quiet certainty in all we are still awaiting. Remember us and remember the many who lie under heavy bondage. Let the time come when You will bring a great deliverance to those who are in darkness. Then we can find meaning for our lives in all that happens, knowing that You have been faithful in everything. You have done more than we asked, more than we can understand. Thank You, for the sake of Your glory and Your Son’s name.

Amen.

On The Subject of Revivals – Charles G. Finney

great sermons header
main pic - charles g. finneyCharles Grandison Finney (August 29, 1792 – August 16, 1875) was an American Presbyterian minister and leader in the Second Great Awakening in the United States. He has been called the “Father of Old Revivalism.” In his beliefs and teachings Finney departed from traditional Reformed theology by teaching that people have free will to choose salvation. Finney was best known as a flamboyant revivalist preacher from 1825 to 1835 in the Burned-over District in Upstate New York and Manhattan, an opponent of Old School Presbyterian theology, an advocate of Christian perfectionism, and a religious writer.

Excerpt From His Sermon “Christian Affinity”

Can two walk together, unless they are agreed? – Amos 3:3. (NKJV)

Stephen was so holy and searching in his address, that the elders of Israel “gnashed upon him with their teeth.” But this is no evidence that he was imprudent. The fact that the revivals of the present day are much more silent and gradual in their progress than they were on the day of Pentecost, and at many other times and places, and create much less noise and opposition among cold professors and ungodly sinners, does not prove that the theory of revivals is better understood now than it was then, nor that those ministers and Christians who are engaged in these revivals are more prudent than the apostles and primitive Christians; and to suppose this, would evince great spiritual pride in us. Nor are we to say that the human heart is changed, or that the character of God is become less offensive “to the carnal mind.” No! the fact is, the prophets and Christ and his apostles and the primitive saints, were more holy, more bold and active, more plain and pungent in their preaching, less conformed to this crazy world; in one word, they were more prudent and more like heaven than we are; these are the reasons why they were more hated than we are, why their preaching and praying gave so much more offence than ours. Revivals, in their days, were more free from carnal policy, and that management that tends to keep out of the sinner’s view the naked hand of God: these are the reasons why they made so much more noise than the revivals that we witness in these days, and stirred up so much of earth and hell to oppose them, that they convulsed and turned the world upside down. It was known then, that “men could not serve God and Mammon.” It was seen to be true, that “if any man will live godly in Christ: Jesus, he shall suffer persecution.” It was understood then, that if “ministers pleased men, they were not the servants of Christ.” The church and world could not walk together, for then they were not agreed. Let us not be puffed up, and imagine that we are prudent and wise, and have learned how to manage carnal professors and sinners, whose “carnal mind is enmity against God,” so as not to call forth their opposition to truth and holiness as Christ and his apostles did. But let us know that if they have less difficulty with us, and with our lives and preaching than they had with theirs, it is because we are less holy, less heavenly, less like God than they were. If we walk with the lukewarm and ungodly, or they with us, it is because we are agreed. For two cannot walk together except they be agreed.

Stop It!

*Pastor’s Note: I am sorry for the length but I did not want to split this up and I couldn’t see any way to make it shorter and stress the importance of this message. Also, images I am using are towards the end of the article. You’ll see why.

This has been weighing heavy, heavy, on my heart and I can’t hold it in any longer. This is something I pray about all the time and it bothers me that I see ALL over the internet on social media as well as supposed Christian websites.

First, I believe that the gifts of the Spirit are STILL active today! Sorry my mainline, mainstream, brothers and sisters, but I have been doing this too long and have seen AND experienced the hand of the Lord too many times to just sit by and say nothing.

Yes, I believe in prophecy (not just foretelling future events, by the way), Word of Knowledge and Word of Wisdom among other gifts. No, I don’t claim to be Pentecostal or even necessarily Charismatic, for those are just denominational titles, though I was saved (born again) in a little Pentecostal Church, I disagree with SOME of the extreme issues that they have declared doctrine. I am however a fundamental (conservative thinking), full-gospel (believing the WHOLE Bible in its entirety) preacher and teacher. That’s what God through His Holy Spirit called me to do many years ago and I can’t stop until and if He ever tells me so. That INCLUDES calling out false teaching as well as the false teachers and false prophets expounding these misleading lies and ways of “demonstrating” the Word of God!

Now I am going to get into the point eventually but I am going to give you a bit of Scriptures to lay the fundamental foundation, as it were. If you can’t rely on the Scriptures (in the context with which they were written) then you have NO foundation at all! So bear with me. But you HAVE to consider these Scriptures before you can understand my point.

By the way; this shouldn’t even have to be taught among mature, Christ-following disciples of Jesus. Jesus said:

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:19-21.

“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” – Matthew 6:25-34.

Furthermore, another lesson concerning our needs AND wants was also given as an example farther along in Jesus’ ministry. Speaking to a young wealthy man:

Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” When His disciples heard it, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?” But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” – Matthew 19:21-26.

Before continuing with a few more Scriptures let me just interject here that Jesus is not say to the disciples, us, or even the wealthy young man that wealth in and of itself is bad. He reiterated that the Father knows our needs and if we SEEK the Lord’s Kingdom first and foremost, all of our NEED’S will be met! The lesson that Jesus is trying to give the disciples AND the young wealthy man (as well as us), is that our WANTS don’t always coincide with our needs and often times, if we ARE seeking the Father’s Kingdom, the luxuries and wants in life COULD get in the way of that very goal, seeking first the Kingdom of God!

As Jesus made it very clear, having riches and wealth does not mean a person CAN’T get to heaven, it just means that wealth can be a weight, an anchor as it were that could keep a person from giving his whole LIFE to the Lord.

Now, let’s continue on with a few more Scriptures leading up to my lesson. This comes from the Apostle Paul who was very much aware in his life of having much and having little:

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:6-7.

Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. – Philippians 4:11-13.

First notice that Paul is saying it’s okay to ask in prayer for things. But do so with thanksgiving for what we do have, a little or a lot and place those requests in God’s hands expecting His perfect will to come forth in whatever the answer may be and then you will have peace about your situation.

Paul goes on a few verses later and explains himself. If you are a child of God, you are going to have times of plenty and times of want. That is the life in Christ Jesus to be expected. However, again, this doesn’t mean that the Lord WON’T bless you with abundance, but the key is to be content with whatever it is that we are blessed by! This is a radical and foreign thought in most westernized countries where the “National” dream is riches and fame!

I want to point out one final thing before giving you one last foundational Scripture before the point I want to make; “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” is one of the most misused and abused Scriptures there is. I will say this though, it IS a what I like to call a Scriptural Principle in the sense that by itself, it can be confirmed elsewhere in the Bible.

HOWEVER, in the context with which Paul is writing it is used to accentuate and assure that we CAN find contentment in whatever state we find ourselves in, riches or poverty. It is God Who gives us the grace for the strength to not just endure but the grace to be content. That’s a far cry from how so many use and try to apply this Scripture.

Now one final Scripture in laying a foundation. Again, this is from Paul:

Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. – Romans 8:26-28.

Now most of you who know and follow me, know that Romans 8:28 is a favorite of mine, for it encompasses so many areas of our lives; when those lives are surrendered to the Lord! But again, look at the context. The Holy Spirit helps us in our weaknesses (such as not being content for example) by making intercession for us to the Father, because the Spirit that dwells within us knows our hearts better than ourselves and He knows the Father’s heart concerning each of us and exactly what we each, individually need to be perfected in Him.

Now with that in mind, I’m going to give you a few pictures, graphics, memes, whatever you want to call them that are found all over the internet. Most of these are found on supposed Christian sites (and I don’t doubt the people behind the sites are Christian) and in fact these ones I will show were from sites I visit. I have only altered them to the point of size and in a few, removing any identifying text or marks.

These images as well as posts that are just text messages of the same kind are what many are calling prophecy and at the least “words of encouragement.” Many of them, and I mean many, come from people who say they have prayed and this is what the Lord gave them. However, I will say it outright, these are more like divination than they are prophecy for Prophecy (again, not just foretelling the future) is speaking the words that God has given to say to individuals, groups or even a nation. It is a very, very heavy burden for this reason:

“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.” But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, . . .” – Matthew 12:35-39.

People may mean well, but people today are so wrapped up in signs and wonders. I don’t believe God has stopped using signs and wonders today, but God uses them to back up His Words and NOT for sensationalism or just to make people “happy.”

The Prophet Jeremiah is the perfect example of this and before you think that what the Lord told Jeremiah to say was JUST for the people of his day, then you do not and cannot believe that the Word of God does not change! But I tell you, God does NOT change and His words back then are just as powerful and potent today. Maybe the circumstances has changed, but intent has not, nor will  it ever change.

Jeremiah was dealing with the Lord’s discipline upon the nation of Israel and yet all the prophets and priests were saying all will be well, when God was telling Jeremiah and a handful of prophets what was coming in the way of warning and discipline.

“Therefore do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your dreamers, your soothsayers, or your sorcerers, who speak to you, saying, ‘You shall not serve the king of Babylon.’ For they prophesy a lie to you, to remove you far from your land; and I will drive you out, and you will perish.” – Jeremiah 27:9-10.

“Therefore do not listen to the words of the prophets who speak to you, saying, ‘You shall not serve the king of Babylon,’ for they prophesy a lie to you; for I have not sent them,” says the LORD, “yet they prophesy a lie in My name, that I may drive you out, and that you may perish, you and the prophets who prophesy to you.” – Jeremiah 27:14-15.

You can substitute Israel’s problems with whatever it is you desire today. It is exactly the same thing only different circumstances. Today we have the same thing. Prophets or wannabe prophets who find nice things to say thinking they are encouraging God’s people when in fact they are stating things that God has not told them to say. It is the same principle that Psychics and Mediums use today to hook people in with money, although the motive of these well-meaning “Christians” is not money, it is doing damage the same. The world and those who NEED the truth, don’t know what to believe. We don’t make the devil’s work harder, we make it easier for him!

I’m here in the name of the Lord to tell you to Stop it! Don’t speak a so-called Word from the Lord until you know your Bible in and out. Then don’t speak a so-called Word from the Lord until you have prayed about it and then prayed again! You may mean well in your own way, but that is the problem, it is YOUR way and not God’s way. God has been using His Word and His prophets for centuries and He’s not going to stop until Jesus comes back and prophets are no longer necessary.

If you want to, encourage one another. Do it with Scripture. Do it with Scriptural principles. Pray for one another, and stir one another up to good works as Hebrews states, but quit using the world’s and the enemy’s way of doing things to try and encourage God’s people.

Now here are some images I want you to see so you know what I’m saying. At the end of them, I’m giving you some images from Psychic and Medium’s advertisements. You tell me there is a difference. I’ve done this too long and have fought New Age practices in cities with colleagues and peers. I’ve seen churches get mixed up in this type of thing due to bad and false teaching! But I’ve also SEEN the hand of God close these things down, New Age establishments and churches alike. Don’t you, as a child of God enable them or be a part of it.

This first set are actual images of posts on Christian sites on social media. They sound like fortune-telling to me. You be the judge and use the discernment the Holy Spirit gives to all believers:

pd plate 1

Now just because people mention God and may use the name of Jesus, does NOT mean that they are speaking in direct obedience to the Lord as guided by the Holy Spirit! The Bible is NOT a book of magic formulas and incantations. It is meant to lead you and guide you into ALL truth, not be some book of spells. While researching the images and such, I found an image someone posted that stated, “Jesus is not your fairy godmother, He doesn’t work like this!” I have to tell you I agree whole-heartedly.

The following are real psychic ads from social media and the only thing I have done is to obscure people’s identities, names, places and numbers to reach them. Tell me you can’t see the similarity:

I have so many more I can draw from, and many of them promise the same things the so-called “Christian” memes do!! The Bible WARNS us to stay away from these kinds of practices. We are to trust God and have faith in His plans, but faith is not always seeing what it is ahead of you and part of that faith is trusting His timing and learning to be content with where we are in Him at any given time!

People we are at war! If you didn’t know it all you have to do is look around. It is spiritual warfare FOR the Kingdom of God! The enemy is subtle and wily and that is why we have listen and follow the directions of Jesus the same way when He told His disciples back then:

“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.” – Matthew 10:16.

Are you a sheep or a wolf. Even if you don’t realize it, you could be a wolf, but only if you practice the ways of the world and the only way to NOT fall into that trap is to read, read and then study the Word of God! The time IS getting shorter! God’s army needs soldiers now, not when it is too late.

In closing, our Lord is ever so aware of not just what we need but also our wants. But He also knows that not all our wants are for our own good no matter what some teachers and prophets try to convince you, by twisting the Word of God. God wants us to be more like Jesus. If you have any doubts, consider the life of Jesus and then consider the lives of the Apostles and disciples who followed after Him.

I hope you accept this with eternal love, but I also hope and pray you accept it for the seriousness that it truly is, this late in the age we are living. Jesus is coming back soon; keep looking up and keep praying for the lost AND for one another!

The Lord’s Anger

prophetic words header wp

Pastor’s Note: God does NOT change and neither does the spirit of His Word. It is living and still relevant for each and every one of us today. With that thought in mind, remember the Prophetic words given by God’s Prophets and Teachers. The words STILL ring true! Do not be fooled into believing God’s Words and warnings were or are only for the children of Israel in ancient history.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-21, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.” KNJV (Bold emphasis, added).

P.S. The Lord called ancient Israel His chosen people and they accepted that, but with pride and arrogance. Today many in the organized church world call the Lord, Father, yet like ancient Israel, choose to do their own thing expecting that nothing will touch them. Be warned; God’s Word and His nature does NOT change.

History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new. Sometimes people say, “Here is something new!” But actually it is old; nothing is ever truly new. We don’t remember what happened in the past, and in future generations, no one will remember what we are doing now. – Ecclesiastes 1:9-11.

The Lord is speaking out against some who call Him Father; His judgment is about to fall upon them. The people who call themselves the “church,” those who speak with such pride and arrogance, will soon know it. They said, “We will replace all that is and has and will be lost and replace it with even better.”

But the Lord will bring forth the enemies and the world against them and stir up others who recognize their arrogance. There will be many that come against the organized churches to do them wrong but even then the Lord’s anger towards their religious arrogance will not be satisfied. His fist will remain poised to strike.

Yet for even after all this punishment, the people will still not repent. They will not seek the Lord Almighty or cry out to Him. Therefore, in a single day the Lord will destroy both the head and the tail, the noble palm branch and the lowly reed. The leaders of the rebellious churches are the head, and the lying prophets and false teachers are the tail. For the leaders of the people have misled them. They have led them down the path of destruction. They are like the blind leading the blind into a ditch, an abyss. Therefore the Lord can take no pleasure in the young men who follow blindly and can show no mercy even to others, young and old who do not speak up against the wickedness. For they are all wicked hypocrites, and they all speak foolishness everyone of them and they enable the corruption to continue. But even then the Lord’s anger towards their religious deceit will not be satisfied. His fist will remain poised to strike.

pw brushfire

This spiritual wickedness is like a brushfire. It burns not only briers and thorns, the weeds and the dead, but also sets the forests and the life within them ablaze. Its burning sends up clouds of smoke burning and choking all around them. These arrogant and wicked institutions will be blackened by the fury of the Lord Almighty and His Heavenly Hosts. The unrepentant and rebellious people will be fuel for the fire, and no one will be able to spare even his own brother. They will attack their neighbor on the right but will still be hungry for more corruption. They will devour their neighbor on the left but will still not be satisfied. In the end they will not even care for the welfare of their own children. One organization will feed on another one, then even another will feed on the first, and both will devour what they call a “church.” And sadly even then the Lord’s anger towards the unrighteous will not be satisfied. His fist will ever remain poised to strike at the very heart of the wicked even then waiting for their repentance.

For the time has come for judgment, and it must begin with God’s household. And if judgment begins with us, what terrible fate awaits those who have never obeyed God’s Good News? And also, “If the righteous are barely saved, what will happen to godless sinners?” So if you are suffering in a manner that pleases God, keep on doing what is right, and trust your lives to the God who created you, for he will never fail you. – 1 Peter 4:17-19.

Not Only Ready But Willing

thought of day header

For Sunday May 1, 2022:

NOT ONLY READY BUT WILLING

Matthew 5:14 (NKJV)
“You are the light of the world.”

Two college students responded to God’s call in very different ways while being taught by professors who did not believe in God. One of the students diligently studied what the professor taught, always hesitant to mention her belief in God for fear of sacrificing her grade, while the other student knew God was calling him to write his final paper on how to become a Christian, despite putting his grade in jeopardy. At the end of the semester, the first student walked away with an A, while the young man received an F on his paper and barely passed the class. Some time later, the young man ran into his old professor, and during their conversation she confessed to giving him an F because she was angry that he had tried to share the gospel with her. She also thanked him for taking that chance, because his F paper led her to accept Christ as her Savior.

The A student still wonders with sadness about her professor.

It’s not always easy to accept the task of shining God’s light in this dark world, but we may be the light that God has sent for a soul in need of a Savior. We must not only be ready; we must also be willing.

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Daily Prayer & Praise 4/29/2022

Prayer for Friday 4-29-2022

Lord our God, we look to You in our many needs, in the distress of our hearts, in the anguish of the whole world. We beseech You, let light come to Your people everywhere on earth to bring them Your help and Your victory. Remember the wretched, the sick, the poor. Let Your living strength come to them so that they can bear their sufferings and hold out joyfully to the end. Remember us all, O Lord our God, for we all need You. We are weak and poor and cannot go forward alone. Your Spirit must help us. May the Savior come to us, and may His grace and His power be born in our hearts. We ask You in the name of Jesus.

Amen.

Christ’s People – Imitators of Him – C.H. Spurgeon

thought of day header

For Friday April 29, 2022:

CHRIST’S PEOPLE – IMITATORS OF HIM

Acts 4:13 (NKJV)
Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus.

I will ever maintain—that by grace we are saved, and not by ourselves; but equally must I testify, that where the grace of God is, it will produce fitting deeds. To these I am ever bound to exhort you, while you are ever expected to have good works for necessary purposes. Again, I do not, when I say that a believer should be a striking likeness of Jesus, suppose that any one Christian will perfectly exhibit all the features of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ; yet my brethren, the fact that perfection is beyond our reach, should not diminish the ardor of our desire after it. The artist, when he paints, knows right well that he shall not be able to excel Apelles; but that does not discourage him; he uses his brush with all the greater pains, that he may at least in some humble measure resemble the great master. So the sculptor; though persuaded that he will not rival Praxiteles, will hew out the marble still, and seek to be as near the model as possible. Just so the Christian man; though he feels he never can mount to the height of complete excellence, and perceives that he never can on earth become the exact image of Christ, still holds it up before him, and measures his own deficiencies by the distance between himself and Jesus. This will he do, forgetting all he has attained, he will press forward, crying, Excelsior! Going upwards still, desiring to be conformed more and more to the image of Christ Jesus.

Walking How Jesus Walked – R.A. Torrey

great sermons header
main pic - r.a. torreyReuben Archer Torrey (January 28, 1856 – October 26, 1928) was an American evangelist, pastor, educator, and writer. He graduated from Yale Divinity School in 1878 and became a Congregational Minister in Ohio. He joined D.L. Moody in Moody’s evangelistic work in Chicago in 1889 and became superintendent of what is now Moody Bible Institute. In 1894 he became pastor of what is now the Moody Church. In 1902-1903, he preached in almost every part of the English-speaking world and between 1903 to 1905 conducted revival services in Great Britain. By the time of his death he had preached throughout the world and had written more than 40 books.

Walking As Jesus Walked

“He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.” – 1 John 2:6.

The one great secret of a life full of blessedness is abiding in Christ. Abiding in Christ is the one all-inclusive secret of power in prayer: our Lord Jesus says in John 15:7, “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatsoever ye will and it shall be done unto you.” Abiding in Christ is also the secret of fruitfulness: our Lord Jesus says, “I am the vine, ye are the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for apart from me ye can do nothing.” And abiding in Christ is the secret of fullness of joy: in the same chapter to which we have referred twice, the Lord Jesus says, “These things have I spoken unto you (i.e., these things about abiding in Him), that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full,” a clear statement that our joy is made full, or filled full, when we abide in Him, and then alone. But according to our text this morning the one proof that we do abide in Him is that we walk even as He walked. The great test of whether we are abiding in Christ or not is not some ecstatic feeling, but our daily conduct. If we walk as He walked that is proof, conclusive proof, that we are abiding in Him whether we have ecstatic feelings or not. On the other hand if we do not walk as He walked, that is conclusive proof that we are not abiding in Him, no matter how many ecstasies and raptures we may boast of. So the practical question that faces each one of us this morning is, Am I walking as Jesus walked?*

Daily Prayer & Praise 4/28/2022

Prayer for Thursday 4-28-2022

Dear Father in Heaven, You show us the way of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy, and at Your right hand is delight forever. In Your presence we want to rejoice together as Your children, under Your protection. May we become firm in every part of our life on earth. Grant that soon something of Your Kingdom, of Your Heaven, may encircle us like a blessing, enabling us to fight on in joy and exultation. We entrust ourselves to You, our faithful and loving God, and we thank You in the precious name of Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Near to Everything and Everyone – A.W. Tozer

thought of day header

For Thursday April 28, 2022:

NEAR TO EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE

1 Kings 18:27 (NKJV)
“But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens
cannot contain You. How much less this temple which I have built!”

I want to explain briefly what omnipresence is and then show what it means in human experience. That God is omnipresent is of course believed by all churches who believe in the Bible. I am not introducing anything new. Omnipresence means that God is all-present. God is close to (for that is what the word means—“close to, near to, here”) everywhere. He is near to everything and everyone. He is here; He is next to you wherever you may be. And if you send up the furious question, “Oh God, where art Thou?” the answer comes back, “I am where you are; I am here; I am next to you; I am close to everywhere.” That’s what the Bible says. . .

We talk about God being close to us or about the problem of God being far away. We don’t think right because we think geographically or astronomically; we think in light-years or meters or inches or miles or leagues. We’re thinking of Him as dwelling in space, which He does not. Rather He contains space so that space is in God. There is never any problem about God being anywhere, for the fact is, as the texts say, God is everywhere.

Daily Prayer & Praise 4/27/2022

Prayer for Wednesday 4-27-2022

Dear Father in Heaven, we thank You that we are Your children and that Your eyes watch over us and see all that is in our hearts. You hear the request of each heart, and You will answer at the right time. Stretch out Your strong hand to us, for we are weak and often heavy-hearted, not knowing what to do nor how to find You. But You are with us in every need in spite of all our faults and shortcomings. You are with us; You lead us through everything to our life’s true goal, until each of us can rejoice over all You have done, to the praise of Your name, and Your Son’s name, Jesus. Thank You, our Father.

Amen.

Gospel Missions – C.H. Spurgeon

thought of day header

For Wednesday April 27, 2022:

GOSPEL MISSIIONS

Acts 13:49 (NKJV)
And the word of the Lord was being spread throughout all the region.

The claim of authority ensures a degree of progress. How did Mohammed come to have so strong a religion in his time? He was all alone, and he went into the market-place and said, “I have received a revelation from heaven.” He persuaded men to believe it. He said, “I have a revelation from heaven.” People looked at his face; they saw that he looked upon them earnestly as believing what he said, and some five or six of them joined him. Did he prove what he said? Not he. “You must,” he said, “believe what I say, or there is no Paradise for you.” There is a power in that kind of thing, and wherever he went his statement was believed, not on the ground of reasoning, but on his authority, which he declared to be from Allah; and a century later, a thousand sabers had flashed from a thousand sheaths, and his word had been proclaimed through Africa, Turkey, Asia, and even in Spain. The man claimed authority—he claimed divinity; therefore he had power. Take again the increase of Mormonism. What has been its strength? Simply this—the assertion of power from heaven. That claim is made, and the people believe it, and now they have missionaries in almost every country of the habitable globe, and the book of Mormon is translated into many languages. Though there never could be a delusion more transparent, or a counterfeit less skillful, and more lying upon the very surface, yet this simple pretension to power has been the means of carrying power with it. Now, my brethren, we have power; we are God’s ministers; we preach God’s truth; the great Judge of heaven and earth has told us the truth.
