The Perfect Revelation of The Lord – 2

expository teaching header 1

Scripture Text – Psalm 19

Many church lectionaries assigns this psalm to be read on Christmas Day, when the “Sun of Righteousness” came into the world (Malachi 4:2) and the “Living Word” was laid in the manger (John 1:14). The emphasis in the psalm is on God’s revelations of Himself in creation, Scripture, and the human heart.

The Word Before Us – God the Instructor (Psalm 19:7–11)

The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them Your servant is warned, And in keeping them there is great reward.

The revelation of God in creation is truly wonderful, but it is limited when it comes to manifesting the attributes of God and His purposes for creation. Following the fall of man, creation has been subjected to futility and bondage (Genesis 3:17–19; Romans 8:20–22), so we need something that reveals more clearly the character and nature of God. That something is the inspired Word of God. When he wrote about creation, David used Elohim (Psalm 19:1), the name that speaks of God’s great power and deity; but when he wrote about God’s Word, seven times he used the “covenant” name Jehovah, for the God of creation is also the God of personal revelation to His people. Israel was a very special nation, chosen by God to receive His law, covenants, and promises (Romans 9:4). “He declares His word to Jacob, His statutes and His judgments to Israel. He has not dealt thus with any nation.” – Psalm 147:19-20. The heavens declare God’s glory, but the Scriptures tell us what God did so that we may share in that glory. There is no conflict between what God does in His universe and what He says in His Word. It was by His Word that He created the worlds (Psalm 33:9), and it is by His Word that He controls the worlds (Psalm 33:11; 148:8). David recorded six different names for God’s Word, six attributes of the Word, and six ministries of the Word in the lives of those who receive it and obey it.

et the holy word

Law of the Lord (Psalm 19:7a). This is the Hebrew word torah, which means “instruction, direction, teaching.” Jewish people call the scrolls of the Law “The Torah,” but the word refers to all of God’s revelation. It comes from a word that means “to shoot an arrow,” for a teacher aims to hit the target and achieve specific goals in the lives of the students. Unlike the textbooks that we write, God’s Word is perfect, flawless, and complete. Because human language changes, we require new translations of God’s Word; but the Word of God itself never needs revision or improvement. “Restore” is the same word used in Psalm 23:3 and means “to revive, to give new life.” The Word of the Lord not only has life (Acts 7:3; Hebrews 4:12), but it imparts spiritual life to all who receive it (1 Peter 1:23), and it sustains life as well (Psalm 119:25, 37, 40, 88, 107, 149, 156, 159).

Testimony of the Lord (Psalm 19:7). The Ten Commandments were known by this name (Exodus 25:21), and they are the basis for God’s law. But all of the Scriptures are God’s witness to us of who He is, what He has said and done, and what He wants us to be and to do. The witness God bears of Himself in the written Word is sure and reliable. Through the Word, we become wise concerning salvation (2 Timothy 3:15) and the principles of successful living (Proverbs 2; 8:33; 10:8). The term “simple” used does not mean mentally deficient people or the naïve people who believe everything, but the childlike people who humbly receive God’s truth (Matthew 11:25; Luke 10:21–24).

Statutes of the Lord (Psalm 19:8). These are God’s detailed instructions concerning the practical matters of everyday life. For the Old Testament Jew, the statutes related to what they ate, how they dressed, how they kept clean, and so forth. God laid down certain basic laws and commandments, and the statutes applied them to specific situations. The New Testament epistles repeat nine of the Ten Commandments for believers today, omitting the Fourth Commandment, and then gives applications for these principles. (See Ephesians 4:20–32.) Some of the statutes that worldly legislators have passed, both in the past and now in the present, are not right or just and have brought a lot of grief to many, but the statutes of the Lord always bring joy and peace.

Inability To Think

food for thought header 2
In a recent chapel service bulletin from Chaplain Wendell C. Hawley, comes a classic illustration of forgiveness. When the Moravian missionaries first went to the Eskimos, they could not find a word in their language for forgiveness, so they had to compound one. This turned out to be: Issumagijoujungnainermik. It is a formidable-looking assembly of letters, but an expression that has a beautiful connotation for those who understand it. It means: “Not-being-able-to-think-about-it-anymore.”

The Holy Spirit and The One Church

thought of day header

Tuesday December 13, 2022

Jude 19
These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit.

The Holy Spirit when he comes in the heart comes like water. That is to say, he comes to purify the soul. He that is to-day as foul as he was before his pretended conversion is a hypocrite and a liar; he that this day loves sin and lives in it just as he was accustomed to do, let him know that the truth is not in him, but he hath received the strong delusion to believe a lie: God’s people are a holy people; God’s Spirit works by love, and purifies the soul. Once let it get into our hearts, and it will have no rest till it has turned every sin out. God’s Holy Spirit and man’s sin cannot live together peaceably; they may both be in the same heart, but they cannot both reign there, nor can they both be quiet there; for “the Spirit lusteth against the flesh, and the flesh lusteth against the Spirit;” they cannot rest, but there will be a perpetual warring in the soul, so that the Christian will have to cry, “O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” But in due time the Spirit will drive out all sin, and will present us blameless before the throne of his Majesty with exceeding great joy. Now, answer this question for thyself, and not for another man. Hast thou received this Spirit? Answer me.

Reflecting With God 12/13/2022

Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

Tuesday Reflecting

The LORD is the strength of my life. – Psalm 27:1.

Perhaps thou findest the duty of thy calling too heavy for thy weak shoulders. Make bold by faith to lay the heaviest end of thy burden on God’s shoulder, which is thine, if a believer, as sure as God can make it by promise. When at any time thou art sick of thy work, and ready to think with Jonas to run from it, encourage thyself with that of God to Gideon, whom He called from the flail to thresh the mountains: “Go in this thy might.” Hath not God called thee? Fall to the work God sets thee about, and thou engagest His strength for thee. “The way of the Lord is strength.” Run from thy work, and thou engagest God’s strength against thee; He will send some storm or other after thee to bring home His runaway servant. How oft hath the coward been killed in a ditch, or under some hedge, when the valiant soldier that stood his ground and kept his place got off with safety and honor!

Daily Prayer & Praise 12/13/2022

prayer and praise header 4
Prayer for Tuesday

Lord our God, may our lives be awakened, for you send your most Holy Spirit to blow through heaven and earth and you stir everything to life. May we long for your Spirit’s prompting. Grant that we not be overpowered by evil and sin. May we be born anew to be fighters for the highest good on earth, which leads into heaven. Hear the prayers of all people far and near who are sighing for the Savior. We pray for them all as we pray for ourselves, and you will hear our prayer. You will send power to lift up their hearts and souls so that there may be a great throng of your joyful people on earth. In spite of all the misfortune, adversity, and danger in the world, there will be a people exulting from one end of the earth to the other, a people trusting in you and sure of victory through the great grace you give in answer to our prayers. We ask all this and praise you in Jesus’ precious name.

Amen.

CHRIST IS CHRISTMAS! HE IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON!
He was sent and He came to fulfill a mission; ALL-Man, ALL-God, carrying the treasure of His precious blood from the humble manger to the Cross of Calvary just so it could be spilled for all mankind. God’s sacrificial lamb, payment for OUR penalty of sin in the world. His gift is free to ALL who are willing to receive it.

May the Spirit of Christmas and the Spirit of Redemption be in your hearts continually from this day forward and may all the precious Joy and gracious Peace from our Heavenly Father be yours in this Season of Christ Jesus!

The Perfect Revelation of The Lord – 1

expository teaching header 1

Scripture Text – Psalm 19

Two quotations help to introduce this psalm. The first is from the German philosopher Immanuel Kant:

“Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing wonder and awe, the more often and the more seriously reflection concentrates upon them: the starry heaven above me and the moral law within me.”

The second is from the well-known Christian writer C. S. Lewis:

“I take this [Psalm 19] to be the greatest poem in The Psalms and one of the greatest lyrics in the world.”

The Worlds Around Us – God the Creator (Psalm 19:1–6)

The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language Where their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth, And their words to the end of the world. In them He has set a tabernacle for the sun, Which is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, And rejoices like a strong man to run its race. Its rising is from one end of heaven, And its circuit to the other end; And there is nothing hidden from its heat.

David focused on the heavens above him, especially the circuit of the sun; but there are many worlds in God’s creation. They include the earth beneath our feet, the plant and animal worlds on earth, in the skies and in the waters, the human world, the world of rocks and crystals, worlds visible to the human eye, and worlds so small we need special equipment to see them. World famous biologist Edward O. Wilson claims there may be as many as 1.6 million species of fungi in the world today, 10,000 species of ants, 300,000 species of flowering plants, between 4,000 and 5,000 species of mammals, and approximately 10,000 species of birds. But these large numbers pale into insignificance when you start examining the heavens, as David did, and begin to calculate distances between stars in light years. David knew none of this modern scientific data, and yet when he pondered the heavens, he was overwhelmed by the glory of the Lord.

et overwhelmed God's glory

The Jewish people were forbidden to worship the objects in the heavens (Exodus 20:4–5; Deuteronomy 4:14–19; 5:8–9), nor were they allowed to practice astrology (Isaiah 47:13–14; Jeremiah 10:1–5). They worshiped the Creator, not the creation (Romans 1:25). The existence of creation implied the existence of a Creator, and the nature of the creation implied that He was wise enough to plan it and powerful enough to execute His plan and maintain what He had made. So complex a universe demands a Creator who can do anything, who knows everything, and who is present everywhere. But even more, David knew that God was speaking to the inhabitants of the earth by means of His creation. They didn’t have to worship God’s creation to be in awe of it! Creation is a “wordless book” that everybody can read because it needs no translation. God speaks through creation day after day and night after night; His speech pours out silently, abundantly, universally.

In Romans 10:18, Paul quoted verse 4 of this Psalm as part of his explanation of why Israel rejected the Gospel and what this rejection did to the nation. The Jewish people could never say that they had not heard God’s message, because Psalm 19:4 says that the whole world has heard. Therefore, both Gentiles and Jews stand guilty before God and need to be saved through faith in Jesus Christ, and we must take the salvation message to them (Romans 10:1–15). Paul quoted from the Septuagint version of the Old Testament, which uses the word “sound” (meaning voice) instead of the Hebrew word for “line,” but the sense is the same. Some translators use the word “influence” instead of “line.” Whichever word is used, God’s voice of power in creation prepares the way for His voice of grace in the Gospel. When Paul preached to Gentiles, he started with creation and then moved into the Gospel message (Acts 14:14–18; 17:22–31). Phillips Brooks gave the first instructions about God to the now well-known, Helen Keller, who was blind and deaf, and she replied that she had always known there was a God but didn’t know what His name was. Our task is to tell the world that His name is Jesus (Acts 4:12).

David was an outdoorsman and often watched the sunrise and sunset, and what he saw day after day reminded him of a bridegroom leaving the marriage pavilion to claim his bride, and a vigorous athlete running a race. The first image speaks of glory (the groom was richly attired), love and anticipation, while the second speaks of power and determination.

But in spite of this universal message that pours out day and night to the entire world, most people ignore it and reject God because they want to live as they please (Romans 1:18–22). The often repeated question, “Are people lost who have never heard about Jesus?” has two answers:

  1. Yes, they are lost, because God speaks to them all day long through His creation, and they refuse to listen;
  2. What are we/you doing about getting the message to these people?

Look Out

food for thought header 2
There was a prudent man who brushed his teeth twice a day, wore rubbers in wet weather, did his daily dozen, slept with windows open, was careful with his diet, had a medical examination twice a year, never smoked, drank or indulged in any kind of excess. He was set to live to be one hundred years old.

The funeral was held last Wednesday. He is survived by eighteen specialists, four health institutes, six gymnasiums and numerous manufacturers of health food and antiseptics.

He forgot to look out for a train at a crossing.

Where Are The Admirers?

thought of day header

Monday December 12, 2022

Psalm 100:3
Know that the LORD, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;
We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

The dictionary says that to admire is “to regard with wondering esteem accompanied by pleasure and delight; to look at or upon with an elevated feeling of pleasure.” According to this definition, God has few admirers among Christians today.

Many are they who are grateful for His goodness in providing salvation. At Thanksgiving time the churches ring with songs of gratitude that “all is safely gathered in.” Testimony meetings are mostly devoted to recitations of incidents where someone got into trouble and got out again in answer to prayer. To decry this would be uncharitable and unscriptural, for there is much of the same thing in the book of Psalms. It is good and right to render unto God thanksgiving for all His mercies to us. But God’s admirers, where are they?

The simple truth is that worship is elementary until it begins to take on the quality of admiration. Just as long as the worshiper is engrossed with himself and his good fortune, he is a babe. We begin to grow up when our worship passes from thanksgiving to admiration. As our hearts rise to God in lofty esteem for that which He is (“I AM THAT I AM”), we begin to share a little of the selfless pleasure which is the portion of the blessed in heaven.

Monday Reflecting

My eyes are ever toward the LORD. – Psalm 25:15.

Rev. Charles Simeon kept the picture of Henry Martyn in his study. Move where he would through the apartment, it seemed to keep its eyes upon him, and ever to say to him, “Be earnest, be earnest! don’t trifle, don’t trifle!” And the good Simeon would gently bow to the speaking picture, and, with a smile, reply, “Yes: I will be in earnest; I will, I will be in earnest; I will not trifle; for souls are perishing, and Jesus is to be glorified.” O Christian! look away to Martyn’s Master, to Simeon’s Saviour, to the omniscient One. Ever realize the inspection of His eye, and hear His voice.

Daily Prayer & Praise 12/12/2022

prayer and praise header 4
Prayer for Monday

Lord our God, we thank you for allowing us to be called your children. We thank you for giving us the power to become more truly your children, so that there may be a witness to your name on earth, so that again and again in the name of Jesus Christ new power may come for body and soul, for the happy and unhappy, for all who are still following false paths, for all who suffer so much grief, fear, and need. We thank you and we praise your most glorious name. Help us on our way. Guide us by the direction of your Holy Spirit. Help us when we are weak people who often grow anxious and afraid. Help us in everything. Help us especially in the concern we have deepest in our hearts, that your name may be honored, your kingdom come, and your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. In the mighty name of Jesus’ let your will be done!

Amen.

Christ In The Midst of The Church – 1

Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.

So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” – John 20:19-23.

Jesus had conquered death, and by the mighty power of God He had been resurrected from the grave. The disciples were gathered in a house behind locked doors. Jesus walked through the doors and stood in their midst. This is the first church building where the resurrected Lord was in the midst of His people.

“Then . . . came Jesus and stood in the midst.” That is the essence of the Christian faith: Jesus in the midst of human life. Moreover, this is the theme of the Bible:

  • The Lord was “in the midst of the land” (Exodus 8:22);
  • Later on, “the LORD your God walks in the midst of your camp, to deliver you and give your enemies over to you” (Deuteronomy 23:14);
  • Jeremiah exclaimed, “You, O LORD, are in our midst” (Jeremiah 14:9);
  • Daniel reported One who “is like the Son of God” (Daniel 3:25) in the midst of the fiery furnace with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego;
  • As a babe, Jesus was in the midst of the shepherds and the wise men; as a boy, He was in the midst of the doctors of theology in the temple;
  • As God the Holy Spirit, Jesus is in the midst of His people “where two or three are gathered together” (Matthew 18:20);
  • At Calvary, Jesus was in the midst of sinners, “where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center” (John 19:18);
  • As a Lamb in Revelation, Jesus is the One “in the midst of the seven lampstands” representing the churches (Revelation 1:13).
  • On the second of His appearance when all the disciples were now gathered together, Jesus “stood in the midst” (John 20:26) of them.

Why is this theme repeated? Simply, because this is the key to the Christian life. This is the key to the abundant life, it is the key to the fellowshipping life of the church, it is the key to the witnessing life of the believer, and this is the key to the successful life of any child of God.

Thus, as we assemble in the house of worship, or wherever we worship together, our deepest desire is that Jesus will be in our midst! As a matter of fact, you can have Jesus in the midst of your life. There are some people who have no room for Christ. There are others who have some room for Christ. Jesus wants every room. He told His disciples to go and find an upper room, furnished, ready for the Master.

Here we find Christ Jesus in the midst of His people, His Body, His Church. No Christian can be spiritual, powerful, or growing unless Jesus is in the midst of all of life.

I’m Living In Heaven To-day

classic poetry header
*Pastor’s Note: A.B. Simpson was a very well respected Canadian preacher, theologian and author who lived from December 15, 1843 to October 29, 1919. My prayer is that you will be blessed and inspired by his poetry as much as I am.

I’M LIVING IN HEAVEN TO-DAY

They tell of the bliss of the ransomed above
   In the Land that is far, far away;
But Jesus so fills my glad heart with His love
   That I’m living in heaven to-day.

They tell of the pleasures that never decline
   And the treasures that never decay;
But Jesus Himself and His riches are mine,
   And I’m living in heaven to-day.

No sorrow e’er comes to that beautiful shore,
   And their tears have been all wiped away;
But Jesus has taught me to sorrow no more,
   And He fills me with heaven to-day.

For heaven is Jesus and Jesus is mine,
   And His presence is with me alway;
He fills me so full of His glory divine
   That I’m living in heaven to-day.

I now have a joy that they never can know,
   In that Land that is far, far away;
I’m seeking and saving poor sinners below,
   And this is my heaven to-day.

Questions On Bible Prophecy – 14

prophetic words header wp

*Pastor’s Note: We will continue, in no particular order questions posed from the excellent book by Mark Hitchcock entitled, The Complete Book of Bible Prophecy. My hope and prayer is that it will give some insight into much of the end-times prophecy the Bible speaks of and hopefully alleviates some of the fears and confusion people have about studying prophecy. The following is the next in a line of questions I present to you from his book:

From What Nation Will the Antichrist Arise?

As we have seen, Scripture teaches that the coming world ruler will be a Gentile. But is the Bible more specific? Can we know his nation of origin?

Daniel 9:26 tells us that Antichrist will be of the same nationality as the people who destroyed the Jewish temple in A.D. 70. Of course, we know that the Romans destroyed the temple. Therefore, we know that the Antichrist will be of Roman origin.

Interestingly, the movie The Omen begins with the birth of the Antichrist in a dimly lit hospital in Rome. A chilling poem from this same movie reinforces the belief that the coming Antichrist will arise from the Holy Roman Empire.

When the Jews return to Zion,
And a comet rips the sky,
And the Holy Roman Empire rises,
Then you and I must die.
From the eternal sea he rises,
Creating armies on either shore,
Turning man against his brother,
‘Til man exists no more.

As we look at our world today, the Jews have returned to Zion, and the Holy Roman Empire is rising before our eyes in the European Community. The rise of Antichrist may not be far behind!

Mr. Hitchcock’s teachings are informative and enlightening as well as inspirational and any book you can get for yourself from his writings will most definitely be well-worth it. I hope you are blessed AND informed and some of these questions and answers will give you a greater strength to walk in confidence and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Bible prophecy ALWAYS points to God and His plans for this world that He created through Christ Jesus. Therefore, for true Christians, it is meant to be a comfort that God continues as always to have everything under control despite what it might appear to the average person.

Centuries of Meditations – First Century 27-28

devotionals header

27

You never enjoy the world aright, till you see how a sand exhibiteth the wisdom and power of God: And prize in everything the service which they do you, by manifesting His glory and goodness to your Soul, far more than the visible beauty on their surface, or the material services they can do your body. Wine by its moisture quencheth my thirst, whether I consider it or no: but to see it flowing from His love who gave it unto man, quencheth the thirst even of the Holy Angels. To consider it, is to drink it spiritually. To rejoice in its diffusion is to be of a public mind. And to take pleasure in all the benefits it doth to all is Heavenly, for so they do in Heaven. To do so, is to be divine and good, and to imitate our Infinite and Eternal Father.

Your enjoyment of the world is never right, till every morning you awake in Heaven; see yourself in your Father’s Palace; and look upon the skies, the earth, and the air as Celestial Joys: having such a reverend esteem of all, as if you were among the Angels. The bride of a monarch, in her husband’s chamber, hath no such causes of delight as you.

Thomas Traherne (1637 – September 27, 1674) was an English poet, Anglican cleric, theologian, and religious writer. Traherne’s writings frequently explore the glory of creation and what he saw as his intimate relationship with God. His writing conveys an ardent, almost childlike love of God, and is compared to similar themes in the works of later poets William Blake, Walt Whitman, and Gerard Manley Hopkins. His love for the natural world is frequently expressed in his works.

The work for which Traherne is best known today is the Centuries of Meditations, a collection of short paragraphs in which he reflects on Christian life and ministry, philosophy, happiness, desire and childhood. This was first published in 1908 after having been rediscovered in manuscript ten years earlier. Before its rediscovery this manuscript was said to have been lost for almost two hundred years and is now considered a much loved devotional.

Gideon, An Unlikely Hero – 7

gs - c.h. mackintosh

Charles Henry Mackintosh (October 1820 – November 2, 1896) was a nineteenth-century Christian preacher, dispensationalist, writer of Bible commentaries, magazine editor and member of the Plymouth Brethren. In 1843, Mackintosh wrote his first tract entitled Peace with God. When he was 24, he opened a private school where he developed a special method of teaching classical languages. Mackintosh went around preaching the gospel to the poor during school holidays. He wrote to John Nelson Darby on August 31, 1853 that the Lord had “called me into larger service than ever,” and he soon concluded that he must give himself entirely to preaching, writing, and public speaking.

Gideon, An Unlikely Hero Part 7

From last lesson: We are united to one another and to our risen Head in glory, by the one Spirit who is with us and in us. The most intense individuality—and our individuality should be as intense as our unity is enduring—can never touch the precious truth of the one body and one Spirit.

All this is divinely true, and most fully and thankfully owned. But, at the same time, we must insist upon the truth of our individuality, and of our personal responsibility. This must be maintained with all possible energy and decision. Each servant has to do with his Lord, in that particular sphere of work to which he has been called. And, moreover, each should know his work, and give himself to it diligently and constantly. He should possess the holy certainty and authority imparted to the soul by that divine and powerful sentence, “Have not I sent thee?”

It will perhaps be said that, “We are not all Gideons or Joshuas. We are not all called to occupy such a prominent place or tread such a brilliant path as those illustrious servants.” That is most likely true; but we are called to serve; and it is essential to every servant to know his commission, to understand his work, and to be fully assured in his own soul that he is doing the very work which the Lord has given him and equipped him to do, and treading the very path which the hand of God has marked out for him. If there is any uncertainty as to this, it is most unlikely that there can be any progress.

But there is more than this. It is not enough to know that we are treading the divinely appointed path. We want to realize and acknowledge the divine presence. We want to have the precious words made good in our experience, “Surely I will be with thee.” This completes the servant’s equipment. The divine commission and the divine presence are all we want and need; but we must have these in order to get on. With these priceless realities it matters not who we are. The Lord can use a feeble woman, a left-handed man, a cake of barley meal, or a broken pitcher. The instrument is nothing. God is the workman. Unbelief may cry out, “O my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? Behold my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.” However, faith can cry out in reply, “What of all this if God be for us? Does He want the rich or the noble? What are riches or greatness to Him? Nothing.”

“For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence.” – 1 Corinthians 1:26-29.

These are wholesome words for all of us. It is an unspeakable mercy for every dear servant of Christ to be kept in the abiding sense of his own nothingness—to be taught to realize, in some measure, the depth, fulness, and power of that one brief but most comprehensive statement, “Without Me ye can do nothing.” – John 15:5. There is not a single branch in all the vine, however imposing or wide-spreading it may seem to be, which, if separated from the parent stem by the thickness of a gold leaf, can produce the very smallest atom of fruit. There must be the abiding realization of our vital union with Christ,—the practical, living, abiding in Him, by faith, day by day, in order to bring forth any fruit that God can accept. It is as we abide in Christ that the living sap circulates freely through us, and gives forth the healthy bud, the green leaf, and the seasonable fruit.

Here lies the grand secret of power. It is abiding in the living Vine. “Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.” – Jeremiah 17:7-8.

God Loves Nobodies

thought of day header

For Sunday December 11, 2022

Luke 2:9
Behold, an angel of the Lord stood before [the shepherds], and the glory
of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid.

A gospel group called The Williams Brothers had a hit with their song “I’m Just a Nobody.” It was about a down-and-out man who lived on the streets and spent his days telling people about Jesus. He was laughed at and harassed by passersby, but that didn’t stop him. The chorus of the song was his life message: “I’m just a nobody trying to tell everybody about Somebody who can save anybody.”

The shepherds in the fields outside Bethlehem might have felt the same way when the angels from heaven appeared to them: “Why did God choose us, a bunch of nobodies, to be the first to hear of the birth of the Messiah in Bethlehem?” They were just a bunch of nobodies who probably later told everybody about the Somebody in Bethlehem who could save anybody. Why did God reveal Himself to shepherds instead of to important royal officials? Perhaps to signal the kind of King who was coming into the world: gentle and humble, a Servant-Shepherd who came to tend to God’s flock.

If you sometimes feel like a nobody, rejoice! God seems to gravitate to the nobodies of this world when He wants them to meet Somebody who can save everybody.

God uses men who are weak and feeble enough to lean on Him.

Making Restitution

life in focus header

SOME modern law-makers, educators, and others concerned with human behavior often make proposals based on the idea that people are basically good. In Leviticus, God held a more realistic view. For example, He knew that there would be cases of dishonesty among His people. So instead of excusing the offenses as the result of bad upbringing and proposing more education as a preventative, He instituted a system of sacrifices for the sin of the offender and restitution to the offended party (Leviticus 6:1–7). It’s easy to see why such laws were needed. Israel was a refugee nation traveling through a desert. Every day the people faced limited resources, so they may have found it easy to rationalize theft and deception. Temptations were many, and sooner or later people succumbed.

To address this problem, God called sin sin and devised a guide for forgiveness and restitution. If someone deceived another in a transaction, the perpetrator was required to sacrifice a ram and to repay the loss with 20 percent interest. The guiding law behind restitution was that of loving one’s neighbor as oneself (Leviticus 19:18). Centuries later, Christ reaffirmed this as the guiding principle for moral and social issues (Matthew 5:43-44; 19:19).

Fixing What Others Break

anecdotal stories

The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him. – Deuteronomy 18:15.

While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”

When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus. – Matthew 17:5-8.

Failure – Career From Correcting Others

When the Kansas City Hyatt Regency walkway collapsed in 1981, Failure Analysis Associates linked the tragedy to an improperly placed bolt that was unable to support the weight imposed on it. When the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded in 1986, Failure Analysis Associates helped trace the failure to O-rings that cracked in cold Florida weather. When fumes at the rocket-fuel plant in Henderson, Nevada, overcame fifty-five people in 1992, Failure Analysis Associates found a leaking chlorine gas line responsible.

Naturally, then, when San Diego’s undersea sewage line burst in early 1992, the city called the “master of disaster”—Failure Analysis Associates. Nine months and $352,000 later, after poring over data, creating computer models, consulting engineers in various disciplines, and scrutinizing the broken pipe sections, they determined that trapped air had caused the eruption. Not even in existence twenty years ago, this company has become a necessity today because of present labor rates and escalating litigation.

God has a single spiritual engineer—his Son—and a single organization—his church. His son unerringly diagnoses our failures; he understands their bases and unfailingly prescribes their cure. The church holds safely in forgiveness those who “hire” God’s engineer through faith in his redemption of sins. If an earthly company is worth its fee for telling us how we fail, isn’t Christ more than worth his for guaranteeing how we can succeed?
