Prayer For God To Look Upon The Church

prayer and praise header 3
Divine Liturgy of Mark, Prayer for Sunday 12-18-2022

O Sovereign and Almighty Lord, look down from heaven on your Church, on all your people, and on all your flock. Save us all, your unworthy servants, the sheep of your fold. Give us your peace, your help, and your love, and send to us the gift of your Holy Spirit, so that with a pure heart and a good conscience we may salute one another with a holy kiss, without hypocrisy, and with no hostile purpose, but guileless and pure in one spirit, in the bond of peace and love, one body and one spirit, in one faith, even as we have been called in one hope of our calling, so that we may all meet in the divine and boundless love, in Christ Jesus our Lord, with whom you are blessed.

Amen.

CHRIST IS CHRISTMAS! HE IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON!
He was sent and He came to fulfill a mission; ALL-Man, ALL-God, carrying the treasure of His precious blood from the humble manger to the Cross of Calvary just so it could be spilled for all mankind. God’s sacrificial lamb, payment for OUR penalty of sin in the world. His gift is free to ALL who are willing to receive it.

May the Spirit of Christmas and the Spirit of Redemption be in your hearts continually from this day forward and may all the precious Joy and gracious Peace from our Heavenly Father be yours in this Season of Christ Jesus!

Saved By His “Worst Enemy”

food for thought header 2
During the Revolutionary War there lived in Pennsylvania a pastor by the name of Peter Miller. Although Miller was greatly loved by everyone in the community, there was one man who lived near the church who hated him and had earned an unenviable reputation for his abuse of the minister. This man was not only a hater of the church, but it also turned out that he was a traitor to his country, and was convicted of treason and sentenced to death.

The trial was conducted in Philadelphia, and no sooner did Miller hear of it than he set out on foot to visit General Washington and interceded for the man’s life. But Washington told him, “I’m sorry that I cannot grant your request for your friend.”

“Friend!” Miller cried. “Why, that man is the worst enemy I have in the world!”

“What?” the general exclaimed in surprise. “Have you walked sixty miles to save the life of an enemy? That, in my judgment, puts the matter in a different light. I will grant him a pardon for your sake.”

The pardon was made out and signed by General Washington, and Miller proceeded at once on foot to a place fifteen miles distant where the execution was scheduled to take place that afternoon. He arrived just as the man was being carried to the scaffold, and when he saw Miller hurrying toward the place, remarked, “There is old Peter Miller. He has walked all the way from Ephrata to have his revenge gratified today by seeing me hung.” But scarcely had he spoken the words when Miller pushed his way through to the condemned man and handed him the pardon that saved his life.

Matthew 11:2-3

thought of day header

Friday December 16, 2022

Matthew 11:2-3
And when John had heard in prison about the works of Christ, he sent two of his
disciples and said to Him, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?”

Only a few months before, John had stood at the Jordan pointing out the Messiah, the Lamb of God, to the multitudes that were surging about him.

Now the situation was changed.

There were no multitudes about him. John the Baptist was in a lonely cell in a fortress, away from his own. Here people were few, but thoughts many. He had once said: “He must increase, but I must decrease.”

I do not know whether John had thought of it in this particular way.

And yet it was not John’s personal troubles that had brought him into the gloom of doubt and despair. His spiritual conflict began when he, in his lonely cell, heard that all Jesus did was to continue John’s own work, that of preaching and baptizing. Jesus, too, preached only that the kingdom of God was at hand.

It was then that John began to doubt. Was I mistaken? Is Jesus also only a forerunner?

There is always some friend of the Lord in the prison-house of doubt. It is not long since all was well with you, too. You beheld the Lamb of God who took away your sins. You were courageous; and you testified, as John did, in the presence of others. But now your courage is gone. You cannot find the old paths. Both the Bible and prayer are as if closed to you. Doubt has made everything seem empty to you. You have not invited doubt, but it has come nevertheless.

John went to Jesus with his doubts. Do likewise. Tell Him what your thoughts about Him are. And confess your sins to Him. You, too, like John, will receive a word from Jesus which will cause your doubts to disappear.

Reflecting With God 12/16/2022

Friday Reflecting

Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the LORD delivers him out of them all. – Psalm 34:19.

Faith is the Christian’s foundation, and hope is his anchor, and death is his harbor, and Christ is his pilot, and heaven is his country; and all the evils of poverty, or affronts of tribunals and evil judges, of fears and sad apprehensions, are but like the loud winds blowing from the right point,—they make a noise, but drive faster to the harbor. And if we do not leave the ship, and jump into the sea; quit the interest of religion, and run to the securities of the world; cut our cables, and dissolve our hopes; grow impatient; hug a wave and die in its embraces,—we are safe at sea, safer in the storm which God sends us, than in a calm when we are befriended by the world.

Prayer for Friday

Lord our God, we thank you for giving us the task of serving you in the name of your servant, Jesus Christ, for letting each of us have a part in carrying out your will. Keep us true to this service. We want to be faithful, always listening to you, for you open our ears and help us know your will and respond to it. Be with us in these days. Strengthen your love and compassion in all hearts. May the life of Jesus Christ gain greater and greater power in all people on earth. May your kingdom above be evident in the hearts and lives of those here on earth who yearn for that kingdom to come. Come quickly, Lord Jesus, we pray.

Amen.

The Perfect Revelation of The Lord – 4

expository teaching header 1

Scripture Text – Psalm 19

Many church lectionaries assigns this psalm to be read on Christmas Day, when the “Sun of Righteousness” came into the world (Malachi 4:2) and the “Living Word” was laid in the manger (John 1:14). The emphasis in the psalm is on God’s revelations of Himself in creation, Scripture, and the human heart.

The Witness Within Us – God the Redeemer (Psalm 19:12–14)

Who can understand his errors? Cleanse me from secret faults. Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, And I shall be innocent of great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.

Unless we have a personal relationship with the Lord so that God is our Father and Jesus is our Redeemer, what we see in creation and what we read in the Bible will not do us much good. The Magi in Matthew 2:1–12 started on their journey by following God’s star, a special messenger in the sky to direct them. Then they consulted God’s Word and found that the King was to be born in Bethlehem; so they went to Bethlehem and there found and worshiped the Savior. When you study God’s creation with a Bible in your hand, you can’t help but see Jesus!

Christ Jesus is seen in the vine (John 15), the sun (John 8:12; Malachi 4:2), the stars (Numbers 24:17), the lambs (John 1:29), the apple trees and lilies (Song of Solomon 2:3, 16; 6:3), the seed planted in the ground (John 12:23–24), and the bread on the table (John 6:35). The Word in the hand is fine; the Word in the head is better; but the Word in the heart is what transforms us and matures us in Christ (Psalm 119:11; Colossians 3:16–17).

et God breathed

The Word is a light (Psalm 119:105) and a mirror (James 1:22–25) to help us see ourselves, search our hearts (Hebrews 4:12), and recognize and acknowledge our sins. We learn what sin is by reading and hearing the law (Romans 3:20; 7:7–14). “Secret sins” are those we don’t even see ourselves and yet are still there, “sins of ignorance” we don’t realize we’ve committed. The Old Testament law made provision for their forgiveness (Leviticus 4; Numbers 15:22–29) because the sinners were guilty even though they were ignorant of what they had done (Leviticus 5:17). However, the law provided no atonement for presumptuous or blatant and willful sins (Numbers 15:30–36; Deuteronomy 17:12–13). When David committed adultery and arranged to have Uriah murdered (2 Samuel 11–12), he sinned insolently with his eyes wide open and therefore could bring no sacrifice (Psalm 51:16–17). When he confessed his sins, God in His grace forgave him (2 Samuel 12:13), but David paid dearly for his transgressions. Unconfessed sins, even if committed ignorantly, can grow within the heart and begin to rule over us, and this can lead to our committing willful disobedience (“great transgression” – there is no article for this in the Hebrew text).

As stated previously, creation is God’s “wordless book,” and the Scriptures are God’s holy Word to us, but God wants to hear our words as “sacrifices” that please Him (Psalm 141:1–2; Hosea 14:2; Hebrews 13:15). The word that is translated “acceptable” refers to the priest’s examination of the sacrifices to make sure they were without blemish. If the sacrifice wasn’t acceptable to the Lord, the worshiper was not accepted by the Lord (Leviticus 1:1–9; 22:17–25; Malachi 1:6–8). The words we speak begin with the thoughts in our heart (Matthew 12:33–37), so it’s important that we meditate on God’s Word and God’s works, the first two themes of Psalm 19. If we delight in God’s Word, we will naturally meditate on it and give expression of His truth with our lips, and this will help to keep us from sin (Psalm 119:9–16, 23–24, 47–48, 77–78, 97–99). The usage here refers to the “kinsman redeemer” (goel, which means “one who has the right to redeem”) who could rescue a relative from difficult situations (Leviticus 25:25–28; Numbers 35:11–34; Isaiah 43:14; see especially the Book of Ruth). Jesus is our Redeemer (Galatians 3:13; 4:5; Titus 2:14; Hebrews 9:12; 1 Peter 1:18), and He became our “kinsman” when He came in sinless human flesh to die for us on the cross. He is both Rock and Redeemer, for He not only paid the price to set us free, but along with that freedom, He also keeps us safe.

Success On “The Last Supper”

food for thought header 2
Leonardo da Vinci was one of the outstanding intellects of all history, for he was great as a draftsman, an engineer, and a thinker. Just before he commenced work on his “Last Supper” he had a violent quarrel with a fellow painter. So enraged and bitter was Leonardo that he determined to paint the face of his enemy, the other artist, into the face of Judas, and thus take his revenge and vent his spleen by handling the man down in infamy and scorn to succeeding generations. The face of Judas was therefore one of the first that he finished, and everyone could easily recognize it as the face of the painter with whom he had quarreled.

But when he came to paint the face of Christ, he could make no progress. Something seemed to be baffling him, holding him back, frustrating his best efforts. At length he came to the conclusion that the thing which was checking and frustrating him was the fact that he had painted his enemy into the face of Judas. He therefore painted out the face of Judas and commenced anew on the face of Jesus, and this time with the success which the ages have acclaimed.

You cannot at one and the same time be painting the features of Christ into your own life, and painting another face with the colors of enmity and hatred.

Approved Unto God

thought of day header

Thursday December 15, 2022

2 Timothy 2:15
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need
to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

If you cannot express yourself on any subject, struggle until you can. If you do not, someone will be the poorer all the days of his life. Struggle to re-express some truth of God to yourself, and God will use that expression to someone else. Go through the winepress of God where the grapes are crushed. You must struggle to get expression experimentally, then there will come a time when that expression will become the very wine of strengthening to someone else; but if you say lazily—‘I am not going to struggle to express this thing for myself, I will borrow what I say,’ the expression will not only be of no use to you, but of no use to anyone. Try to re-state to yourself what you implicitly feel to be God’s truth, and you give God a chance to pass it on to someone else through you.

Always make a practice of provoking your own mind to think out what it accepts easily. Our position is not ours until we make it ours by suffering. The author who benefits you is not the one who tells you something you did not know before, but the one who gives expression to the truth that has been struggling for utterance in you.

His praise shall continually be in my mouth. – Psalm 34:1.

Let not thy praises be transient,—a fit of music, and then the instrument hung by the wall till another gaudy day of some remarkable providence makes thee take it down. God comes not guest-wise to His saints’ house, but to dwell with them. David took this up for a life-work: “As long as I live, I will praise Thee.”

Daily Prayer & Praise 12/15/2022

Prayer for Thursday

Lord our God, open our ears and our hearts so that we hear you speaking and can follow the voice that cries out to us. May we be a people who, like John the Baptist, prepare the way for you. Grant each of us strength to give up everything at the right moment and to realize, “The way to my heart should be leveled too. It should be straight and level all around me and in the whole world.” The light is now shining for us in Jesus Christ, and through him we want to find strength and help, to the glory of your name alone. Through hearing his voice we will find help. Help will be very near to us, and the mighty hand of the Lord Jesus will be over us in every need and in every situation. For this reason and purpose he came. We can believe in his help, and we long for it. Hear the innermost longing of each one of us, and make us united as your people so that we may keep hope in our hearts and serve you on earth. Praise to your name, O Father in heaven, that you have put us on earth and that we can draw strength from the One who fights and is victorious, Jesus Christ.

Amen.

The Perfect Revelation of The Lord – 3

expository teaching header 1

Scripture Text – Psalm 19

Many church lectionaries assigns this psalm to be read on Christmas Day, when the “Sun of Righteousness” came into the world (Malachi 4:2) and the “Living Word” was laid in the manger (John 1:14). The emphasis in the psalm is on God’s revelations of Himself in creation, Scripture, and the human heart.

The Word Before Us – God the Instructor (Psalm 19:7–11) – Continued

The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them Your servant is warned, And in keeping them there is great reward.

Commandment of the Lord (Psalm 19:8). The word means “that which is appointed.” Because the Lord loves us, He commands us what to do and warns us what not to do, and how we respond is a matter of life or death (Deuteronomy 30:15–20). God’s commands are pure and lead to a pure life, if we obey from the heart. The Bible is the Holy Scriptures (Romans 1:2; 7:12; 2 Timothy 3:15), and therefore His Word is “very pure” (Psalm 119:140; Proverbs 30:5). We are enlightened and learn God’s truth when we obey what He says (John 7:17) and not just when we read it or study it (James 1:22–25). We are strangers on this earth, and the Word of God is the road map to guide us to the home He is preparing for us (Psalm 119:19). Like a traveler on the highway, if we deliberately make a wrong turn, we go on a detour and fail to reach our destination.

et right path

Fear of the Lord (Psalm 19:9). This is an unusual name for the Scriptures, but it reminds us that we cannot learn the Word of God unless we show reverence, awe, and respect for the God of the Word and in turn the Word of our God. To teach the Bible is to teach the fear of the Lord (Psalm 34:11; Deuteronomy 4:9–10), and the mark of a true Bible student is a burning heart, not a big head (Luke 24:32; 1 Corinthians 8:1). While some of the fears people have might be distressing and even defiling, the fear of God is clean, nurturing, and maturing. We do not decay or deteriorate as we walk in the fear of the Lord (2 Corinthians 4:16–18).

Judgments of the Lord (Psalm 19:9). This can be translated as “ordinances” or even “verdicts.” It refers to the decisions of a judge. Throughout the Bible we see the Lord passing judgment on what people and nations do, and His rewards, rebukes, and punishments help us understand what pleases Him. In the nation of Israel, the ordinances instructed the officers and judges in settling problems between individuals and in meting out punishments to guilty offenders. Believers today are not under the Old Testament law, but how those laws were applied helps us understand the righteousness of God and our need for His grace.

The way we treat the Bible is the way we treat the Lord, so it isn’t difficult to determine if we are rightly related to God. Do we desire His Word because it’s precious to us, even more than wealth (Psalm 119:14, 72, 127, 162) or tasty food (Psalm 119:103; 1 Peter 2:2)? Do we find satisfaction in “feeding on” God’s Word? (See Matthew 4:4; Job 23:12; Jeremiah 15:16). Would we skip a meal to spend time meditating on the Scriptures? Do we attend church dinners but not church Bible studies? Furthermore, do we accept the warnings of the Word and act upon them? To know the warning and not heed it is sin (James 4:17). Do we enjoy the blessing of the Lord because we’ve obeyed His will? To have an appetite for God’s Word is a mark of a healthy and mature Christian whose priorities are straight. The Lord has sent the Holy Spirit to teach us His Word, and if we walk in the Spirit, we will learn and live the truth (John 14:26; 16:12–15; 1 Corinthians 2:9–10; 1 John 2:20–29).

True Forgiveness:

1. A little boy, being asked what forgiveness is, gave the beautiful answer: “It is the odor that flowers breathe when they are trampled upon.”

Isaiah 55:13

thought of day header

Wednesday December 14, 2022

Isaiah 55:13
Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress tree.

Difficulties and obstacles are God’s challenges to faith. When hindrances confront us in the path of duty we are to recognize them as vessels for faith to fill with the fulness and all-sufficiency of Jesus, and as we go forward, simply and fully trusting Him, we may be tested, we may have to wait and let patience have her perfect work, but we shall surely find at last the stone rolled away, and the Lord waiting to render unto us double for our time of testing, and fulfil the promise, “Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, instead of the brier the myrtle tree, and it shall be to the Lord for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.”

Oft there comes a wondrous message
     When my hopes are growing dim;
I can hear it through the darkness,
Like some sweet and far-off hymn.
Nothing is too hard for Jesus,
No man can work like Him.

When my way is closed in darkness
And my foes are fierce and grim,
Still it sings above the conflict
     Like some glad, victorious hymn:
Nothing is too hard for Jesus,
No man can work like Him.

Wednesday Reflecting

Oh, how great is Your goodness, Which You have laid up for those who fear You. – Psalm 31:19.

God’s promises are ever on the ascending scale. One leads up to another, fuller and more blessed than itself. In Mesopotamia, God said, “I will show thee the land.” At Bethel, “This is the land.” In Canaan, “I will give thee all the land, and children innumerable as the grains of sand.” It is thus that God allures us to saintliness. Not giving us anything till we have dared to act—that He may test us. Not giving everything at first—that He may not overwhelm us. And always keeping in hand an infinite reserve of blessing. Oh! the unexplored remainders of God! Who ever saw His last star?

Prayer for Wednesday

Thank you, O Lord God, our Father in heaven, for gathering us together and opening a door which can be entered by all who are chosen to be your children. You open the door for all who have the childlike hope that you are carrying out your purpose and perfect will, that in the midst of the ruin and sin of world history, life remains, the life of the Lord Jesus Christ, life for all the world. No one can destroy this life, which will soon gather power until all people see him, Jesus Christ, who for the salvation of humankind is the same yesterday, today, and into all eternity. For his name is blessed and wonderful above all other names, the name of Jesus!

Amen.

The Perfect Revelation of The Lord – 2

expository teaching header 1

Scripture Text – Psalm 19

Many church lectionaries assigns this psalm to be read on Christmas Day, when the “Sun of Righteousness” came into the world (Malachi 4:2) and the “Living Word” was laid in the manger (John 1:14). The emphasis in the psalm is on God’s revelations of Himself in creation, Scripture, and the human heart.

The Word Before Us – God the Instructor (Psalm 19:7–11)

The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them Your servant is warned, And in keeping them there is great reward.

The revelation of God in creation is truly wonderful, but it is limited when it comes to manifesting the attributes of God and His purposes for creation. Following the fall of man, creation has been subjected to futility and bondage (Genesis 3:17–19; Romans 8:20–22), so we need something that reveals more clearly the character and nature of God. That something is the inspired Word of God. When he wrote about creation, David used Elohim (Psalm 19:1), the name that speaks of God’s great power and deity; but when he wrote about God’s Word, seven times he used the “covenant” name Jehovah, for the God of creation is also the God of personal revelation to His people. Israel was a very special nation, chosen by God to receive His law, covenants, and promises (Romans 9:4). “He declares His word to Jacob, His statutes and His judgments to Israel. He has not dealt thus with any nation.” – Psalm 147:19-20. The heavens declare God’s glory, but the Scriptures tell us what God did so that we may share in that glory. There is no conflict between what God does in His universe and what He says in His Word. It was by His Word that He created the worlds (Psalm 33:9), and it is by His Word that He controls the worlds (Psalm 33:11; 148:8). David recorded six different names for God’s Word, six attributes of the Word, and six ministries of the Word in the lives of those who receive it and obey it.

et the holy word

Law of the Lord (Psalm 19:7a). This is the Hebrew word torah, which means “instruction, direction, teaching.” Jewish people call the scrolls of the Law “The Torah,” but the word refers to all of God’s revelation. It comes from a word that means “to shoot an arrow,” for a teacher aims to hit the target and achieve specific goals in the lives of the students. Unlike the textbooks that we write, God’s Word is perfect, flawless, and complete. Because human language changes, we require new translations of God’s Word; but the Word of God itself never needs revision or improvement. “Restore” is the same word used in Psalm 23:3 and means “to revive, to give new life.” The Word of the Lord not only has life (Acts 7:3; Hebrews 4:12), but it imparts spiritual life to all who receive it (1 Peter 1:23), and it sustains life as well (Psalm 119:25, 37, 40, 88, 107, 149, 156, 159).

Testimony of the Lord (Psalm 19:7). The Ten Commandments were known by this name (Exodus 25:21), and they are the basis for God’s law. But all of the Scriptures are God’s witness to us of who He is, what He has said and done, and what He wants us to be and to do. The witness God bears of Himself in the written Word is sure and reliable. Through the Word, we become wise concerning salvation (2 Timothy 3:15) and the principles of successful living (Proverbs 2; 8:33; 10:8). The term “simple” used does not mean mentally deficient people or the naïve people who believe everything, but the childlike people who humbly receive God’s truth (Matthew 11:25; Luke 10:21–24).

Statutes of the Lord (Psalm 19:8). These are God’s detailed instructions concerning the practical matters of everyday life. For the Old Testament Jew, the statutes related to what they ate, how they dressed, how they kept clean, and so forth. God laid down certain basic laws and commandments, and the statutes applied them to specific situations. The New Testament epistles repeat nine of the Ten Commandments for believers today, omitting the Fourth Commandment, and then gives applications for these principles. (See Ephesians 4:20–32.) Some of the statutes that worldly legislators have passed, both in the past and now in the present, are not right or just and have brought a lot of grief to many, but the statutes of the Lord always bring joy and peace.
