From 5 Cents to $100

One time a poor little boy saw all the big people putting money into the offering plate. He didn’t have anything to give but five marbles in his pocket. He put them into the plate! People around must have smiled as they saw the strange offering drop in. After the meeting, one of the deacons asked the child if he wanted his marbles back. “Oh, no I gave them to the Lord Jesus.”

As the story was told from one to another, a rich man said, “I’ll give a hundred dollars for that boy’s marbles.” That was another kind of miracle change, from 5 cents to $100.

The Inspiration of Spiritual Initiative

thought of day header

Thursday February 16, 2023

Ephesians 5:14
“Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead.”

All initiative is not inspired. A man may say to you—‘Buck up, take your disinclination by the throat, throw it overboard, and walk out into the thing!’ That is ordinary human initiative. But when the Spirit of God comes in and says, in effect, ‘Buck up,’ we find that the initiative is inspired.

We all have any number of visions and ideals when we are young, but sooner or later we find that we have no power to make them real. We cannot do the things we long to do, and we are apt to settle down to the visions and ideals as dead, and God has to come and say—“Arise from the dead.” When the inspiration of God does come, it comes with such miraculous power that we are able to arise from the dead and do the impossible thing. The remarkable thing about spiritual initiative is that the life comes after we do the ‘bucking up.’ God does not give us overcoming life; He gives us life as we overcome. When the inspiration of God comes, and He says—“Arise from the dead,” we have to get up; God does not lift us up. Our Lord said to the man with the withered hand—“Stretch forth thy hand,” and as soon as the man did so, his hand was healed, but he had to take the initiative. If we will do the overcoming, we shall find we are inspired of God because He gives life immediately.

Reflecting With God 2/16/2023

reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

Thursday Reflecting

Before I was afflicted I went astray, But now I keep Your word. – Psalm 119:67.

An old Puritan said, “God’s people are like birds; they sing best in cages, they sing best when in the deepest trouble.” Said old Master Brooks, “The deeper the flood was, the higher the ark went up to heaven.” So it is with the child of God: the deeper his troubles the nearer to heaven he goeth, if he lives close to his Master. Troubles are called weights; and a weight, you know, generally cloggeth and keepeth down to the earth; but there are ways, by the use of the laws of mechanics, by which you can make a weight lift you; and so it is possible to make your troubles lift you nearer heaven instead of making them sink you. Ah! we thank our God, He has sometimes opened our mouth when we were dumb; when we were ungrateful, and did not praise Him, He has opened our mouth by a trial; and though when we had a thousand mercies we did not bless Him, when He sent a sharp affliction, then we began to bless Him.

Daily Prayer & Praise 2/16/2023

prayer and praise header 4
Lord, hear our prayer:

Forgive us, Father, that though we possess the Bible, we rarely read it. Forgive us that though we read it, we rarely think about what you have told us. Forgive us that even when we have pondered your word we rarely put what you have said into practice. Father, forgive us that we resist your will and word for us, the challenge to love our neighbor as ourselves, the call to speak a word of hope and comfort, the commission to speak against evil and to call others to follow Christ. Awaken us again to find delight in reading your word, pondering its meaning for today and allowing the Spirit to bring the word that heals and restores to our lost and hurting world. Through Christ, the Word of God.

Amen.

Psalm 119 – Heth

expository teaching header 1

Scripture Text – Psalm 119

The emphasis in this the longest psalm, and the basic theme, is on the vital ministry and practical use of the Word of God in the inner spiritual life of God’s children. It describes how the Word enables us to grow in holiness and handle the persecutions and pressures that always accompany an obedient walk of faith.

The Word of God performs many wonderful ministries in the life of the devoted believer. If we delight in His Word, learn it, treasure it within, and obey what it says, the Lord will work in us and through us to accomplish great things for His glory! Circumstances may change, but God and His Word remain the same.

Heth – God Is All We Need

Please read Psalm 119:57-64 for the background to this section.

Whenever the people of Israel failed God and turned to idols for help, it was evidence that they did not really believe Jehovah was adequate to meet their needs. In the time of Elijah, Israel tried to remedy the drought by turning to Baal, the Canaanite storm god, but it was the Lord who sent the rain in answer to the prophet’s prayer. When the enemy threatened to invade their land, the leaders of Israel often ran to Egypt for help, as though Jehovah was unconcerned and unable to deliver them. The psalmist in this section makes it clear that the Lord God Almighty is all we need.

God is our portion. This is real estate language and refers to the apportioning of the land of Canaan to the tribes of Israel (Psalm 78:55; Joshua 13–21). The priests and Levites were not given an inheritance in the land because the Lord was their inheritance and their portion (Numbers 18:20–24; Deuteronomy 10:8–9; 12:12). Jeremiah, the priest called to be a prophet, called the Lord “the Portion of Jacob” (Jeremiah 10:16; 51:19; Lamentations 3:24), and David used the same image in Psalm 16:5–6. The “lines” in 16:6 refer to the property lines of one’s land, the inheritance given by God.

et psalm 119-8

Believers today have a rich spiritual inheritance in the Lord Jesus Christ, for God’s fullness is in Him and we are “complete in him” (Colossians 2:9–10). He is our life (Colossians 3:4) and our “all in all” (Colossians 3:11). Because we are in Him, we have “all things that pertain to life and godliness” (2 Peter 1:3). Our riches in Christ are revealed in the Word, which is our “spiritual bankbook,” and His wealth can never diminish. The psalmist had made promises to obey the Lord, but that is not how we get our wealth from the Lord. What He provides for us is a gracious gift, not a loan, and we are not required to promise to repay Him (Romans 11:33–36). Accept the inheritance He has given you, rejoice in it, and trust Him to supply every need.

God is our Master. The land inherited by the Israelites actually belonged to the Lord (Leviticus 25:23) and He cared for it (Deuteronomy 11:8–17). If the people obeyed the terms of the covenant, God would bless the people and their labors in the land, but if they turned to idols, He would chasten them, first in the land and then in other lands. Loving obedience was the condition for God’s blessing, even as it is today. Our mind belongs to Him (“I thought about my ways”) and our feet belong to Him (“turned my feet”). Our time belongs to Him and we must not delay obeying His will. In ancient days, no servant could say “No,” no servant could linger or postpone doing the master’s will, and no servant could give excuses or say “I forgot.” The servant’s responsibility is to hear the master’s orders, remember them, and obey them immediately.

God is our greatest joy. It should be the Christian’s greatest joy to know God, love Him, hear His voice, and obey His will. Praying to Him and praising Him should be more refreshing to us than sleep. Being with His people should satisfy our hearts, and we should see the love and glory of God in all of creation. Whether we are lying on our bed at midnight, meditating on His Word, fellowshipping with God’s people, or taking a walk in God’s glorious creation, we love God, listen to Him, and thank Him. “All who fear you” is a fine description, for the fear of God ought to mark the people of God. In spite of the disobedience of mankind and the ravages of sin that destroy God’s creation, the earth is still full of God’s lovingkindness, and though we are pilgrims and strangers on this earth, God is our home (Psalm 90:1) and therefore we have nothing to fear.

ma come follow me

COME . . . FOLLOW ME

Before time began HE had you on HIS mind; HE loved you first way before there was time.

He created all things all that our eyes see; the mountains and forest, every fish in the sea.

The eagles which soar and the sparrows that sing, sparkling rivers that flow, the storms and the breeze.

HE came down to the earth to be born a man to die on a cross, a perfect pure lamb.

Without the shedding of blood there would be no remission for sin; there was no other way, it had to be HIM.

As you know HE was born the LIGHT we would find, He calmed the sea and HE opened blind eyes, HE chose to die for the sins of mankind.

HE rose from the dead as HE said that HE would; so we could be free; yes our FATHER is good.

HE said; “Take up your cross all you who believe; I’ll be with you forever; come, follow me.”

So repent and be broken we must be born anew, forget the excuses of the bad which you do.

Our FATHER wants those who will choose to do right; who worship in spirit and truth by HIS might; children who walk by the day, not by night.

Come follow JESUS who won’t lead us astray, The TRUTH and the LIFE the Only WAY.

To a place HE’S prepared, our heavenly home. Where no wars will be and sin cannot come in, joy unbelievable; where tears will not flow.

HE said, “Oh! How I love you with ME you can be, let go of the world and come follow me.”

Hattie’s 57 Pennies

Hattie Wiatt, a little girl, came to a small Sunday school and asked to be taken in, but it was explained there was no room for her. In less than two years she fell ill, and slipped away on her own little last pilgrimage and no one guessed her strange, little secret until beneath her pillow was found a torn pocketbook with fifty-seven pennies in it, wrapped in a scrap of paper on which was written, “To help build the little Temple bigger, so that more children can go to Sunday school.” For two years she had saved her pennies for the cause which was nearest her heart.

The pastor told the incident to his congregation, and the people began making donations for the enlargement. The papers told it far and wide, and within five years those fifty-seven pennies had grown to be $250,000, and today in Philadelphia, can be seen a great church, the Baptist Temple, seating 3,300, a Temple College with accommodations for more than 1,400 students, a Temple Hospital, and a Temple Sunday school so large that all who wish may come and be comfortable.

2 Timothy 2:1

thought of day header

Wednesday February 15, 2023

2 Timothy 2:1
Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

How to enjoy this day. This will never come by trying to be happy and yet we are responsible for the conditions of real joy.

  1. Be right with God; for “Gladness is sown for the upright in heart.” “It is His joy that remains in us that makes our joy to be full.”
  2. Forget yourself and live for others; for “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
  3. When you cannot rejoice in feelings, circumstances and states, “rejoice in the Lord,” and “count it all joy, when ye fall into divers temptations.”

Finally, obey the Lord and be faithful to your trust; and again and again will His blessed Spirit whisper to your heart, “Well done, good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of thy Lord.”

“Not enjoyment and not sorrow
Is our destined end or way,
But to act that each to-morrow
Finds us farther than to-day.

“Let us then be up and doing
With a heart for any fate,
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.”

Wednesday Reflecting

Give me understanding. – Psalm 119:34.

Prayer is a proper means for the increase of knowledge. Prayer is the golden key that unlocks that treasure. When Daniel was to expound the secret contained in the king’s dream, about which the Chaldean magicians had racked their brains to no purpose; what course did Daniel take? “He went to his house,” Daniel 2:17-18, “and made the thing known to Hananiah, Michael, and Azariah, his companions; that they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning his secret.” And then was the secret revealed to Daniel.

Lord, hear our prayer:

Father, we thank you for the hope with which you have filled our lives. We give thanks that in the coming of Christ you have given us assurance of your sovereign control of all things. We praise you for this day, when we can remember the coming of Christ to be the Saviour of the world. Thank you for the promise of his coming again as Lord of all. We are grateful for the hope with which Christ fills our lives. In our times of doubt and despair the message of his coming, his birth, life, death and resurrection, renews our hope. Thank you in his great and glorious name.

Amen.

Psalm 119 – Zayin

expository teaching header 1

Zayin – The Ministry of Memory

Please read Psalm 119:49-56 for the background to this section.

If the psalmist was a priest or a Levite, and he probably was, then he was required to be an expert on the book of Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy means “second law.” The book records Moses’s “farewell speech” that he gave to prepare the new generation of Israelites for the conquest of Canaan. After forty years of wandering, the nation would stop being nomads and would become settlers, but new generations would come along and be prone to forget the lessons of the past. In Deuteronomy, you find the word “remember” fifteen times and the word “forget” fourteen times. Some things in the past we must forget (Philippians 3:12–14), but some things we must never forget. “He who does not remember the past is condemned to repeat it” (George Santayana).

God remembers His people. When applied to the Lord, the word “remember” means “to pay attention to, to work on behalf of.” Being omniscient, God cannot forget anything, but He can decide not to “remember it against us” (Isaiah 43:25; Jeremiah 31:34; Hebrews 8:12; 10:17). That is the negative side; the positive side is that He “remembers” to do us good and give us His blessing. He remembered Noah and delivered him (Genesis 8:1); He remembered Abraham and delivered Lot (Genesis 19:29); He remembered Rachel and Hannah and enabled them to conceive (Genesis 30:22; 1 Samuel 1:19). Remembering is not recalling, for God never forgets; it is relating to His people in a special way. The psalmist prayed that God would use the Word to work on his behalf. The writer had hope because of the promises God had given to him, and he prayed that those promises would be fulfilled. When Daniel found in the prophecy of Jeremiah the promise of Israel’s deliverance from captivity, he immediately began to pray for the promise to be fulfilled (Daniel 9). True faith not only believes the promises but also prays for God to work. In his believing and praying, the writer found encouragement and he did not abandon his faith or run away from his problems. He was revived with new life!

et psalm 119-7

His people remember God’s Word. How could this spiritual leader know the “ancient laws” that God gave Moses centuries before? The nation had preserved the Word (Deuteronomy 31:24–29) and taught it to each new generation (Deuteronomy 4:1–14), and this is the obligation of the church today (2 Timothy 2:2). Unless the Word of God is honored, taught, and obeyed in a church, that congregation is one generation short of extinction. The psalmist was indignant at what the “wicked” were doing as they abandoned Israel’s spiritual heritage, and he wept over their evil deeds. Anger alone can be very destructive, but anger plus love produces anguish, and anguish can lead to constructive action. His response was to turn God’s statutes into songs and to use the Word to praise the Lord (see also Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16). He did not consider God’s law a burden to bear; he saw the Word as a blessing to share—and he sang it! Praise that is not based on the truth of Scripture is unacceptable to the Lord. We are on a difficult pilgrimage from earth to heaven, and we need God’s songs to encourage us and to help us witness to others along the way (Acts 16:22–34). We are strangers on the earth, and the Bible is our guidebook to this world and to ourselves.

His people remember His name. The name of God—Jehovah, Yahweh—is full of meaning and power. To translate it only as “I AM” is to miss much of the dynamic that it contains (Exodus 6:1–3). God’s name Yahweh speaks not only of His existence and His eternality, but also of His sovereignty, His power, and the dynamic working out of His will in this world. The ancient Jewish people so revered His name that they feared to use it and substituted Adonai, lest they sin against their God. In the book of Psalms alone, there are more than one hundred references to the name of the Lord. We are to love His name (Psalm 5:11), sing praises to His name (Psalms 7:17; 9:2; 18:49), and glorify His name (Psalm 29:2). It is through His great name that we triumph over our enemies (Psalms 44:5; 54:1; 118:10–12), so we should always call on His name for help (Psalm 116:4, 13, 17). To remember His name is to encourage our hearts to trust Him, obey Him, and not be afraid. “And those who know Your name will put their trust in You, for You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.” – Psalm 9:10.

To remember God’s name is to ask Him to remember us and work on our behalf. We must do this when we are in the darkness and afraid, or when we are lonely and discouraged (Psalm 42:6). “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” – Proverbs 18:10. If you want to know how strong His name is, be sure to imitate the psalmist and make it your practice to trust and honor His name in every aspect of life, not just during emergencies.

jb glory to God

The Glory of God

When I see the morning sun, rise up in the east –
I think of the LOVE in You;
When it sets in the west with miraculous colour –
I think of the “I AM” in You.

When the bright stars twinkle throughout the night –
The GLORY of God shines through;
When the moon (“Lamp of the Poor”) is lit –
I think of the WONDER of You.

When nature is reborn in the spring of the year –
I think of the LIFE in You;
When summer shows its myriad of colour –
I think of the LIGHT in You.

When days grow shorter, preparing for rest –
I think of the WISDOM of You;
When a blanket of white protects from the cold –
I think of PEACE from You.

When I count my many blessings at the end of the day –
of ALL that God can do;
When I feel Your love, Your wisdom, and peace,
It’s because I am thinking of You.

Useful Joachim

One day Martin Luther found himself penniless, but happened to be requested to contribute to an important Christian work. He recollected that he had a beautiful medal of Joachim, Elector of Brandenburg, which he had prized.

He went immediately to the drawer, opened it, and said: “What art thou doing there, Joachim? Dost thou not see how idle thou art? Come out and make thyself useful.” Then taking the medal, he gave it to the work.

God, The All-Seeing One

Tuesday February 14, 2023

Proverbs 15:11
Hell and Destruction are before the LORD; So how much
more the hearts of the sons of men.

God knows the heart so well that he is said to ‘search’ it. We all understand the figure of a search. There is a search-warrant out against some man who is supposed to be harbouring a traitor in his house. The officer goes into the lower room, opens the door of every cupboard, looks into every closet, peers into every cranny, takes the key, descends into the cellar, turns over the coals, disturbs the wood, lest anyone should be hidden there. Upstairs he goes: there is an old room that has not been opened for years,—it is opened. There is a huge chest: the lock is forced and it is broken open. The very top of the house is searched, lest upon the slates or upon the tiles someone should be concealed. At last, when the search has been complete, the officer says, “It is impossible that there can be anybody here, for, from the tiles to the foundation, I have searched the house thoroughly; I know the very spiders well, for I have seen the house completely.” Now, it is just so God knows our heart. He searches it—searches into every nook, corner, crevice and secret part; and the figure of the Lord is pushed further still. “The candle of the Lord,” we are told, “searches the inward parts of the belly.” As when we wish to find something, we take a candle, and look down upon the ground with great care, and turn up the dust. If it is some little piece of money we desire to find, we light a candle and sweep the house, and search diligently till we find it. Even so it is with God. He searches Jerusalem with candles, and pulls everything to daylight. No partial search, like that of Laban, when he went into Rachel’s tent to look for his idols. She put them in the camel’s furniture and sat upon them; but God looks into the camel’s furniture, and all.

Tuesday Reflecting

Your testimonies also are my delight and my counselors. – Psalm 119:24.

Boleslaus, one of the kings of Poland, carried about him the picture of his father; and when he was to do any great work, or set about any extraordinary design, he would look on the picture, and pray that he might do nothing unworthy of such a father’s name. The Scriptures are the picture of God’s will. Before a man engages in any business whatsoever, let him look there, and read what is to be done, and what to be omitted.

Circumstances may change, but God and His Word remain the same.

Vau (Waw) – Walking and Talking

Please read Psalm 119:41-48 for the background to this section.

We hear several voices in this section, and it begins with God speaking to us. He does this, of course, as we read His Word and meditate on it. He speaks in love and in mercy, and even the warnings come from His compassionate heart. The Word of God is the expression of the love of God to us (Psalm 33:11) and it should result in love from our hearts to the Lord, to His people, and to the lost. God’s Word shares God’s promises, and promises always imply future hope. Scripture is the “word of all His good promise” (1 Kings 8:56), and all His promises have their realization in Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20). The Scriptures are also “the word of this salvation” (Acts 13:26), for the Word declares that Jesus is the only Savior and we can trust in Him. What a wonder that God has spoken to us! (Hebrews 1:1–2). Are we listening?

But while God is speaking, the enemy is also speaking. We have learned that the writer of this psalm was oppressed by enemies who lied about him, slandered his name, and even threatened his life. Our main weapon against these attacks is “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17), for only God’s truth can silence the devil’s lies (Matthew 4:1–11). We need God’s truth in our hearts, not only to keep us from sin, but also to equip us to answer those who oppose us or ask us why we believe as we do (1 Peter 3:15).

et psalm 119-6

God’s people speak to the Lord. Like Nehemiah, we can send up “telegraph prayers” to the Lord right in the midst of our work and our battles (Nehemiah 2:5; 4:4; 5:19; 6:9, 14; 13:14, 22, 31). When we are confronted by the enemy, the Lord will not give us words we have never pondered from the Scriptures, but His Spirit can remind us of what we have read and learned (John 14:25–26). The writer connected God’s Word with his mouth, because the word “meditate” in the Hebrew means “to mutter.” The ancient Jews spoke the Word audibly as they meditated and prayed (Joshua 1:8).

Our lives speak for the Lord. But only if our “walk” agrees with our “talk.” The best defense of the faith is a transformed life that is compassionate toward others. Our obedience to the Lord and our loving ministry to others (Matthew 5:13–16) demonstrates the reality of our faith far better than anything else. Because we know and obey “the word of truth,” we are able to enjoy freedom from the bondage of sin, for it is the truth that makes us free (John 8:32; James 1:25; 2:12).

God’s people speak to others. If we truly love God and His Word, we will not be ashamed to share the Word even with important people like kings (see also Romans 1:16; Philippians 1:20; 2 Timothy 1:12; 2:15; 1 Peter 4:16). When we delight in the Word, love it, and obey it, sharing the message with others comes naturally. To witness means to tell others what we have seen and heard concerning Jesus Christ (Acts 4:20) and what He has done for us. A satisfied Christian is an awesome witness whose testimony God can use to convict and convert others. We do not worship the Bible but we do honor God’s Word and lift our hands to the Lord in praise and thanksgiving for His gift. In many churches, the entire congregation stands when the Scriptures are brought in and publicly read. (See Psalms 28:2, 63:4, 134:2 and 141:2.)

The basic Christian virtues (1 Corinthians 13:13) are seen in those who live by God’s Word: faith, hope, and love as the psalmist writes. Love is mentioned three times because “the greatest of these is love.” (On loving God and His Word, see throughout Psalm 119 and also 1 Timothy 1:5).

Forest Cathedral

*Pastor’s Note: Sister Lora Cox was one of my favorite Christian poets who loved the Lord very much. She is now home in His arms, but she was so gracious to let me use her poetry. As long as I can continue her legacy, I will. Please enjoy and be richly blessed by her love and passion for the Lord.

Forest Cathedral

Above the misty mountain peaks
The sun climbs once more,
Spreading its warmth across the land
And onto the forest floor.

Dark ferns raise their arms
To capture the golden rays
Filtering through the trees
Where a gentle breeze plays.

Sparrows, Thrush and Robins,
Grosbeaks, Titmouse, all on the wing
Blending their songs in harmony
With praises to heaven sing.

I wander there in solitude
Far from the cities mournful sighs
Where scenes of natures beauty
Unfold before my eyes.

I join nature in her praises
Giving thanks to God above
For the serenity of the forest
That displays His wondrous love.

I see it in each flower that blooms
Hear it from each bird that sings.
I feel it in the gentle breeze
For His love made these things.

My soul responds to the beauty
Of nature that surrounds me there.
Deep within my forest cathedral
I walk with God in prayer.

Putting Saints Into Circulation

During the reign of Oliver Cromwell the government ran out of silver with which to make the coinage of the realm. Cromwell therefore sent his men everywhere to see if they could find more of the precious metal. They returned to report that the only silver they could find was in the statues of the saints which were on display in various cathedrals of the land. “Good!” replied Cromwell, “we will melt down the saints and put them into circulation!”

The Deeper Life

thought of day header

Monday February 13, 2023

Philippians 3:10
That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship
of His sufferings, being conformed to His death.

I almost shrink from hearing the expression, “the deeper life,” because so many people want to talk about it as a topic—but no one seems to want to know and love God for Himself!

God is the deeper life! Jesus Christ Himself is the deeper life, and as I plunge on into the knowledge of the triune God, my heart moves on into the blessedness of His fellowship. This means that there is less of me and more of God—thus my spiritual life deepens, and I am strengthened in the knowledge of His will.

I think this is what Paul meant when he penned that great desire, “That I may know him!” He was expressing more than the desire for acquaintance—he was yearning to be drawn into the full knowledge of fellowship with God which has been provided in the plan of redemption.
