Christ Our Moral Teacher – 2

great sermons header

*Pastor’s Note: Here’s the conclusion of Robert Eyton’s lessons on Christ as Our Moral Teacher.

And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. Then He opened His mouth and taught them . . . – Matthew 5:1.

As it was back when Robert Eyton first penned his ideas about our subject today, there were a lot of writers, so-called modern thinkers, and today, they have certainly proliferated exponentially! Many of them then, and much more so today, truly believe there are serious omissions in the moral teaching of Christ; they have felt the divergence that so often exists between Christianity and life; that (so it seems to them) it has become a faith, a creed, and not truly a life; and they argue further that before it can be said to be a real change of lifestyle, a great deal has to be added and insisted on; that if a man were to frame his life on the Sermon on the Mount, to order himself according to the Beatitudes, he would not be completely virtuous (by the world’s standards of virtue)—that there would be sides of his character undeveloped, and whole regions of his duty neglected, as a person, and as a citizen even.

Before we deal with the subject in detail, I have to say this: that nowhere does Jesus Christ claim to have originated a NEW code of morals, that He had always assumed an existing one, and that the advances which He adds upon previously existing ones should not to be allowed to obscure this fact; we would do well to bear in mind and to say that the teaching of Christ and His Apostles takes a main portion of moral effort for granted (from the perspective of the world) which Jesus never mentions in detail. It was to the points in which previous morality failed that Christ took upon Himself to naturally address. It was not necessary to dwell on lessons already learnt, or ones that should have been taught, the most basics of morality.

Christ never said, “be brave, be self-reliant, respect yourself,” because He knew the experience of life would teach natural men all these things, and because Christian common-sense would teach them as well. So again He did not say “be honest,” because the law of the community, the very idea of human life, implants and instills honesty as a virtue. He built UPON these things indirectly.

gs moral teacher

I want to add just a bit before moving on to the effect that the area(s) of moral life, where Gospel precepts DO hold sway and make an impact, is that area within man, where social restraint and public opinion exercise and have no control at all. It is the area(s) of motive and inward self-control, in other words, spiritual discipline, which the Beatitudes govern; they fill-in where there is lack, they supplement and add to previous systems of teachings, they touch these deepest springs within man which affect his whole moral nature. The Beatitudes moral aim is (1) to accentuate the value of inward virtue as distinct from outward, and to lay down the absolute necessity of right inward intention; and (2) to emphasize the importance of certain moral elements which the existing morality either ignored or misrepresented, and which are always in danger of being forgotten in the fret and hurry of life, unless they are enforced by some higher directive,—I mean such virtues as humility, forgiveness, endurance, patience, sympathy, purity. All the things you would find with in the nature of our Heavenly Father and Christ Jesus, Himself!

If we would take the time to remember and meditate on this, we would approach the Sermon on the Mount with the right perspective; it is corrective, it is supporting in its ethical teaching, but it is not—and could not be exhaustive. It was addressed to those who accepted and practiced the best moral teaching of their day, but who, inasmuch as they were destined to be the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world,” had to aim at a more perfect standard so the rest of us could benefit.

Nothing can be more important for those who have to deal with children in the area of teaching and raising, than to understand this fact I just laid out. The primary virtues, justice, courage, good judgment, and discipline certainly need to be taught and instilled before we try to build up the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love. There are elementary lessons in morality which must precede the teaching and inclusion of the Beatitudes. These primary virtues need to be a foundation on which the building of the Beatitudes could be a success. We do no real service to Christian morality when we forget to teach and instill these primary things; we shall only make ourselves ready for the higher spiritual wisdom as we are able to recognize that the New Testament was not meant to teach us everything, rather that it takes and builds, as stated before, upon the foundation which we learn for ourselves by the discipline of life, and especially when the full impact of Christian consciousness, the God-enlightened moral faculty within us comes to light from the shadows of darkness, then and only then can the Beatitudes make true and real the possibility of spiritual fruit-bearing for ourselves. So we shall arrive at that great and complete realization of life and that more abundantly, which we owe to our Divine Master, and which has been again and again realized, in the most diverse ways, in the lives of His truest and most yielded servants.

Grace For a Season

thought of day header

For Saturday April 15, 2023

Hebrews 9:27
It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.

Warren Wiersbe tells of a frontier town in which a horse-drawn wagon with a little boy aboard was racing through the streets. A young man risked his life to stop the horse and save the child. The rescued child grew up to become a lawless man and one day stood in a court in front of a judge—the now-grown young man who had saved his life. On the basis of their prior relationship, the convicted man pled for mercy. The judge responded, “Once I was your savior, but now I am your judge. I sentence you to your just punishment.”

When the young man risked his life years before to save the child, it was an act of grace. He knew nothing of the young child: Was he worthy of being saved? Was he a respectful child? A rebellious one? It didn’t matter, for grace asks no questions concerning worthiness. It acts only out of self-sacrifice and love. But the Bible says that grace is only for a season. The day will come when God extends judgment to all who have rejected His grace and mercy. Those who reject God’s grace will be worthy of God’s punishment. Have you received His grace?

Don’t consider your worthiness to be saved. Only reach out and take the hand that is extended to you by grace.

Grace is love that cares and stoops and rescues.

The Widow’s Oil

IN THE days immediately following the departure of Elijah, God empowered Elisha to perform a number of miracles. One of them was to increase oil for a poor widow (2 Kings 4:1–7). This incident confirmed Elisha as a true prophet of God and the successor to Elijah. In fact, the increase of oil recalled the miracle that Elijah performed for the widow of Zarephath (1 Kings 17:8–16).

In addition to what the miracle revealed about Elisha, it illustrated an important aspect of God’s character: His concern for the poor and disadvantaged. Both Elijah and Elisha dealt with kings, commanders, and other powerful leaders. But they also helped the powerless. In this case, the widow was about to lose her sons to pay for a debt left by her late husband. That meant that she would be left with no means of support. God provided for her needs through the intervention of Elisha (compare Psalm 68:5).

James reminds us that true religion involves action, such as caring for “widows in their trouble” (James 1:27). Elisha was a true prophet practicing true religion.

Anecdotal Story 4/15/2023

anecdotal stories

A Fine Idea . . . But

Please read Judges 10:6-14 (The link will open in a new window).

When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. . . . Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.” When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. – Matthew 2:3, 7-8, 16.

In 1983, touring American editors found a time warp in Communist Russia—the streets, buildings, and public works systems were unbelievably dated. Social progress had simply stopped dead in its tracks. Hospitals had nothing but cast-iron beds in the rooms. In major food stores butchers cut meat manually, while people waited patiently in interminable lines. Narrow, poorly maintained roads constantly threatened danger, and decrepit vehicles rumbled along them. With the fall of communism, western travelers discovered even bleaker truths: 20 percent of the people lived in abject poverty, and there was little welfare to care for the unfortunate.

Many people have an idealized view of life without God, even to considering the advantages such a life might offer. The attraction is only an idea, however; it is far from reality. Without God life is barren, not decorated; it is drab and empty, not full. All that awaits those who refuse God are unsatisfied cravings, ignored needs, unassuaged pains, and unhealed wounds.

Stephen Charnock: Piercing Heaven – Puritan’s Prayers

Lord, is it not better to make me your friend than to let me continue as your enemy?

Would you not be glorified more by raising a soul from sin than a Lazarus from the grave? Your power and mercy are shown greater by turning a dry stump into a fruitful and flourishing tree. So overcome my shameful nature by your merciful power. Change me from a venomous to a dove-like nature.

I would be made happy to glorify you by becoming what I was created to be! Glorify yourself by creating my heart anew, that I may glorify you in newness of life.

I cannot get a new heart by my own strength, but it is not too hard for your power, and it matches your promise.

Amen.

Judgment Is Coming!

prophetic words header wp

The Word of God is unchanging. What the Lord God said centuries ago still applies today in the same given circumstances. Our God is a just and holy God. He is patient and longsuffering but He will NOT let wickedness and rebellion go unpunished and especially to those who use His name for their own motives.

A nation that once knew the prosperity and blessing of the Lord will surely share the same fate as those nations from the past. If God did not spare His beloved elect from punishment and judgment, then He will certainly judge those who have done the same thing, all-the-more!

This is the Word the Lord gave the Prophet Micah for His elect and the Word STILL applies today for all those who would follow in their footsteps of rebellion and corruption. God’s Word AND His character does NOT change.

********************

“Listen, you leaders of the nation! You are supposed to know right from wrong, but you are the very ones who hate good and love evil. Then you beg the LORD for help in times of trouble! Do you really expect him to answer? After all the evil you have done, he won’t even look at you!”

This is what the LORD says: “You false prophets are leading my people astray! You promise peace for those who give you food, but you declare war on those who refuse to feed you. Now the night will close around you, cutting off all your visions. Darkness will cover you, putting an end to your predictions. The sun will set for you prophets, and your day will come to an end. Then you seers will be put to shame, and you fortune-tellers will be disgraced. And you will cover your faces because there is no answer from God.”

But as for me, I am filled with power— with the Spirit of the LORD. I am filled with justice and strength to boldly declare this nation’s sin and rebellion. Listen to me, you leaders of this nation! You hate justice and twist all that is right. You are building our nation on a foundation of murder and corruption. You rulers make decisions based on bribes; you priests teach God’s laws only for a price; you prophets won’t prophesy unless you are paid. Yet all of you claim to depend on the LORD. “No harm can come to us,” you say, “for the LORD is here among us.” Because of you, our nation will be plowed like an open field; our nation will be reduced to ruins! Thickets of thorns and brambles will grow on the heights where the centers of RELIGION now stand.

Based on the Word of the Lord from Micah 3

Go Into The World

pastor's desk header

And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” – Mark 16:15.

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” – Matthew 28:18-20.

Notice the title of this teaching? GO, into the world. I admire those who can pick up and leave home and even loved ones behind for a season to go into the world. Just to be clear, I’m not referring to just Christian missionaries either though I have a very high respect for them. No, I’m referring to the everyday, average ‘Joe,’ no matter the gender or ethnicity or for that matter, nationality, that is willing to take what they have in the form of skills and gifts and share them with others.

Before I get to going to far ahead let me tell you of a pet-peeve I have. There are way too many ministries and churches today, what I like to call “brick and mortar” organizations, that camp within their four walls and they teach their congregation to “go out into the workplace and streets and where ever else you can find people and COMPEL them to come here!” Sorry, I can’t find that anywhere in my Bible or in any of the different translations that I use for study. Everywhere I look, I see Jesus telling those He has discipled to “GO INTO ALL THE WORLD!”

Now please don’t get me wrong. Not everyone can go to the next state, the next country or even the next continent, but that isn’t the point. Preachers are teaching their congregations, their sheep, to go out and gather sheep to bring them to their fold. In actuality, Jesus told the disciples to go out “as sheep among wolves” but to be “shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.” (Matthew 10:16).

Do you wonder why He said that? Because people love power and authority and they love it when others tell them how great they are. When Jesus sent disciples out to make disciples, He was sending them out to teach others to go out and do the same thing. That is how the Kingdom of God multiplies. It doesn’t happen in buildings that try to grow from two hundred people to five hundred and then to a thousand and so forth.

I have found over the years that sharing the Gospel of Jesus, not the doctrine of my church, made a greater impact in the lives of the people I worked with and associated with. Those I knew that already had a church to attend, I would encourage them then in the things the Bible says and often times they would admit, they hadn’t heard such a thing. I wasn’t trying to convert them, for they belonged to the Lord already, but those “sheep” I tried to encourage and inspire, maybe brought a little much needed joy into our lives.

pd go to the world

We have so much more influence with those around us, where ever we are in the world and especially if we are new to an area or region, we want people to know we listen and understand and just maybe we can point them into the direction of where real help comes from; eternal and long-lasting help!

So for those of you who are already out there IN areas of the world that are new to you, what an amazing opportunity you have to do what Jesus commanded ALL His disciples to do and not just the Apostles; make more disciples by sharing with others the blessings found in following Jesus Christ.

I truly don’t begrudge churches that want to grow, after all, I’m a Pastor, but I respect them more if they are teaching their people to go out and do the work that Jesus said we can all do. No, we’re not all preachers or even teachers, but we can all share a story or tell of an incident in which the Lord helped us through. Remember this, Jesus made friends with the disciples. He reached a point where He didn’t call them students any longer but friends because He shared everything He knew with them. That’s what friends do.

The Bible says, “A man who has friends must himself be friendly.” – Proverbs 18:24. If you want friends, you have to show yourself to be a friendly person. That’s what Jesus did. He was definitely not starchy and stiff like the Pharisees of His time! He enjoyed the company of people and especially those He chose as His friends.

When Jesus first met His soon to be disciples He said this, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” – Matthew 4:19. That was the beginning of their training in following the example that Jesus set. Today, that hasn’t stopped being His call. When we follow Him, He WILL teach us to catch others and in turn we teach them and so on.

The truth of the matter is that the way things look in the world around us, His return is not far off. Will He find us sitting and warming a pew, maybe a couple of times a week, or will He find us “being about His Father’s business.” What business is that you may ask? Being true fishermen. But, truly fishing for men!

Those of you who are already out there in the world, have the battle for you in obeying the Lord is already accomplished. Now, you just need to be friends with those about you because friends share what they KNOW with their friends! Share Jesus!

The Gift of Love

*Pastor’s Note: Sister Lora Cox was one of my favorite Christian poets who loved the Lord very much. Sister Lora has gone to be with the Lord and no longer has a webpage. She was very gracious to let me have permission to use her poetry and these are poems I have collected over the years. Please enjoy and be richly blessed by her love and passion for the Lord.

THE GIFT OF LOVE

The bells of Heaven are ringing
A celebration is under way.
To rejoice in the gift of Love
God sent to us on this day.

The Heavenly Angels are singing,
Glad tidings of peace on earth,
Heralding in the season
Of our dear Saviors birth.

The Heavenly Saints are shouting
Praises to the Father above,
For on this day He gave to us
The perfect gift of Love.

Let’s join the celebration,
Send the invitation far and near
To share in God’s gift of LOVE
Each and every day of the year.

For it’s true, love has no season,
And we need no special day,
To receive God’s gift of Love
And in return; give the gift away.

Spiritual Nuggets 4/14/2023

Fear God

In Ecclesiastes 5, the author stops to consider God’s place in the heavens and our place on earth. He acknowledges that there is a great gulf of understanding between who God is and who we think He is. This realization should affect our entire posture before Him.

“Guard your steps when you go to the house of God,” he says. “Do not be rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth.” Don’t attempt to offer the “sacrifice of fools” with your lips, or even your heart, he adds. Instead, we should come prepared to listen (Ecclesiastes 5:1–3).

Coming to God ready to listen doesn’t mean neglecting to bring our troubles or needs before Him. He wants us to do this—but not rashly. Rather, we should offer acknowledgement that He guides our lives. Like Rachel and Leah, in Genesis 30, we may sometimes use God to justify the pursuit of our own goals, rather than seek wisdom and guidance from Him.

It’s an awesome thing to think that this very God who should be approached with such humility and reverence left His place in heaven and came down to earth. This God, who is so beyond our own comprehension, has chosen to dwell in us with His Spirit. The mighty God who rules heaven, earth, and the cosmos, and who breaches all understanding, has chosen to reveal Himself to sinners like us.

Dead Man’s Letter

When searching for David Livingstone, Henry M. Stanley had a most unusual reception from King Mutesa in Uganda. The queen had a strange dream about the white man’s God and His Son Jesus Christ shortly before Stanley’s arrival. She related her dream after the arrival of Stanley at the royal house.

The king and queen pleaded with Stanley to send a letter to England and ask for a missionary teacher to be sent to them. He wrote the letter and sent it out by a young Frenchman who was leaving Stanley’s party.

The bearer of the letter was murdered. Several months later his body was found by some British soldiers. Searching through his clothing, they found Stanley’s letter in one of his boots. They sent it to England, where it was featured in the Daily Telegraph.

Great interest was aroused. When the Church Missionary Society appealed for missionary volunteers to go to King Mutesa’s land, several young men responded.

Luke 24:36

thought of day header

Friday April 14, 2023

Luke 24:36
Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them,
and said to them, “Peace to you.”

Jesus understood the human race.

There is nothing it needs as sorely as peace. We live in a world of strife, a world of war.

Human history is essentially one long history of wars. And things are not getting any better in this respect, but worse. The last war was the greatest the world has ever seen. A war in which the whole world participated, in one way or another.

It is not strange that there is war in this world of ours; for nothing is as warlike as the human heart.

Think of the “wars” in our homes. Between husband and wife. Many live under an armed truce, others fight each other mercilessly.

Think of the “wars” between brothers and sisters. It is not for nothing that people have formulated the old proverb that “love between brothers and sisters reaches as far as the probate courts.”

Or think of the “wars” between neighbors. To begin with, the bone of contention is some insignificant little thing: a chicken, a sheep, or a fence. Whereupon we have unfriendliness, enmity, bickering, and, finally, the supreme court.

Most people are carrying on warfare of one kind of another. It depends chiefly upon their temperament and training.

But even the most peaceful promote strife, even though it is only an inner “war,” one of thought and imagination. How much of a person’s time is not devoted to attacking others in their thoughts. With thoughts as sharp as awls, filled with the poison of envy, we wound others, without mercy.

Yes indeed, we all need Him who can impart peace to our hearts!

Reflecting With God 4/14/2023

reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

Friday Reflecting

“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.” – Isaiah 1:8.

I have heard of a certain divine, that he used always to carry with him a little book. This tiny volume had only three leaves in it; and truth to tell, it contained not a single word. The first was a leaf of black paper, black as jet; the next was a leaf of red-scarlet; and the last was a leaf of white, without spot. Day by day he would look upon this singular book, and at last he told the secret of what it meant. He said, “Here is the black leaf, that is my sin, and the wrath of God which my sin deserves; I look and look, and think it is not half black enough to represent my guilt, though it is as black as black can be. The red leaf reminds me of the atoning sacrifice and the precious blood; and I delight to look at it, and weep, and look again. The white leaf represents my soul, as it is washed in Jesus’ blood and made white as snow.”

Daily Prayer & Praise 4/14/2023

prayer and praise header 4
Lord, hear our prayer:

Lord, there are so many obstacles that we bring to worship: the hurt and anger we feel within us, the worries and concerns that fill our minds, our awareness that life and our lives are being changed, painful memories of the past that still cause us anguish even now, the uncertainty and bleakness of our tomorrows, the emptiness, sorrow and doubt that fill our lives today. We do not find it easy to keep Christ at the center, but open our eyes, Lord; we want to see Jesus.

Amen.

Waiting For The Light To Shine – 3

pastor's desk header

Scripture References – Micah 7:1-9, 18-20

Taking up from the last lesson we see that Micah found a connection between the absence of trust and immorality. If we are not willing to be responsible enough to be trustworthy, as individuals, and as a society, then we evidently bear no need for moral behavior. Can you trust me to be who I say I am? Can you trust me to try acting in your best interest rather than in a self-centered manner? If not, you can’t trust me in any other way because I have proven that I am not standing on the foundation for moral action. Simply put, I have said by my lack of trustworthiness that you, as a person, don’t matter to me.

Talk about living in darkness! Mark Twain showed us in his character Huckleberry Finn, that Huck wrestled with darkness in his society and his own darkness as well. In Huck’s Southern world, a high crime was helping a runaway slave which he had done for Jim. Huck became torn because of the prevailing attitudes of those who had reared him from a proslavery perspective, the then called, “dirty abolitionists,” and his own friendship with Jim, the slave, who had sacrificed for him, taken risks for him, and had been through all kinds of adventures with him up and down the “Big River,” the mighty Mississippi. Later Huck sang:

I am waitin’ for the light to shine
I am waitin’ for the light to shine
I have lived in the darkness for so long
I’m waitin’ for the light to shine.

You’ve been there, haven’t you? One being engulfed in darkness, darkness all around but “waitin’ for the light to shine.” It’s your personal darkness. You’re a long way from home, and loneliness won’t go away. You’re in a required course that you can’t pass, and it won’t go away. There is that guilt for some long-ago failure that won’t let light in. There is the burning grief that will not let you rest. There’s a health problem that threatens your life. There is something that you believe keeps you from being faithful to God.

pd waiting for light 3

You’re in darkness, but you’re still “waitin’ for the light to shine.” Well, in a great way, that’s faith. To believe that the light will shine when all you know is darkness, that in essence, is faith.

It was hopeful; it was a matter of faith that Micah used an image of an orchard or vineyard where there was no fruit, but where there could be new growth in season. Listen to this prophetic liturgy, his hymn about the victory of faith.

Therefore I will look to the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation; My God will hear me. Do not rejoice over me, my enemy; When I fall, I will arise; When I sit in darkness, The LORD will be a light to me. . . . He will bring me forth to the light; I will see His righteousness. – Micah 7:7-9.

Who is a God like You, Pardoning iniquity And passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He does not retain His anger forever, Because He delights in mercy. He will again have compassion on us, And will subdue our iniquities. You will cast all our sins Into the depths of the sea. – Micah 7:18-19.

Israel may be fallen now, but she shall certainly rise. Darkness has overtaken her temporarily, but God always has been and ever will be her light, the light over which no darkness can be victorious. In all that God does, redemption is God’s aim; therefore, God acts to forgive those who have failed and those who struggle but who do not wish to remain in darkness.

That is why we do not have to live as people without hope. That is why we need not pronounce doom on ourselves, our society, and our world. With faith in God and God’s goodness, there is hope. There is always hope! Like Huckleberry Finn, we may be “waitin’ for the light to shine,” but, there is already some light, isn’t there?

Of course there is! Jesus told us about Himself: “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” – John 8:12. Now that is hope and to that I can say a hearty and sincere, Amen!

HIS LOVE

For GOD so loved the world HE gave HIS SON for us to die upon a hill HIS blood was shed as HE was crucified.

Without the shedding of that blood we could not be saved it covered all our sin and guilt our penalty was paid.

It took the LAMB of GOD to cleans to wash away the stain to save us from the fire of hell HE took our shame and pain.

HIS body torn HE is the bread and HIS love will sustain the wine HIS blood shed for a love which will never go away.

Sometimes the things those happenings those things which make us blue can make us feel we are alone but that is far from true.

EMMANUEL our GOD with us is right here by our side He loved so much HIS blood was shed and eventually HE died.

But friend it does not end that way for He came back to life HE understands our every pain HE came to make things right.

You see no greater LOVE for us was ever shown to be HE is the ONLY WAY there is HIS love has set us free.

If you feel sad at time’s I’m sure that they will come your way just trust in HIM obey HIS WORD believing as you pray.

HE makes a way where non is found call out to HIM right now believe that HE so loved you too for HIS love knows no bounds.

HE proved it on that cross that day believe for HE is TRUTH for while HE hung upon that cross my friend HE thought of you.

HE cannot lie HE’S coming back to take us who believe to a place so beautiful where fear or tears can’t be.

In the twinkle of an eye we will all be changed but it took that cross to prove HIS love – HE is the ONLY WAY.

Spiritual Nuggets 4/13/2023

The Kingdom of Heaven is Like . . .

Few in the world have sold everything to pursue an idea. Yet Jesus claims those who discover the kingdom of heaven are willing to do so. “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, that a man found and concealed, and in his joy he goes and sells everything that he has and buys that field” (Matthew 13:44). It seems that hardly any of us are equally willing to give up everything for the sake of the kingdom of heaven.

The realization that Jesus has brought the kingdom of heaven to earth presents us with a choice. Will we decide that His kingdom is worth more than all things, or will we devalue it by equating it with worldly treasures?

There are many types of currency, not just money: reputation, occupational status, and social media popularity are just a few. But the kingdom is much more than material or monetary ideas. It’s about giving our gifts, thoughts, and wealth. It’s about being willing to sacrifice everything when God asks.

Putting aside God’s priorities in our lives can be far too easy—probably because He is not standing in front of us, nagging us to do His work. But there won’t be another day to get around to God’s work. Instead, those who believe in Christ (the righteous) will be separated from everyone else (the wicked). In the meantime, our job is to lead the “wicked” to the ways of Christ (Matthew 13:44–50). We’re called to do His work, day by day. And we’re called to work as if we don’t have another chance—as if nothing in the world is more valuable.

A Call To China From Industry

Several years ago, this ad appeared in an English publication for six men to go to China:

Six courageous young men are needed at once to go to China for the Chinese Industrial Co-Ops which trains technicians for a democratically industrialized China. They are to take the place of George Hogg, brilliant 31-year-old Oxford graduate, who died of tetanus in Northwest China beyond reach of medical aid. If willing to risk disease, endure discomfort, eat only Chinese food, talk Chinese, he may apply immediately at the Anglo-Chinese Development Society. Anyone not prepared to take similar risks need not apply.

Over 600 young men applied! Yet a relative few responded to similar challenges from the mission fields.

Moral Dominion

thought of day header

Thursday April 13, 2023

Romans 6:9-11
Death no longer has dominion over Him . . . the life that He lives, He lives to God.
Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin,
but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Co-Eternal Life. Eternal life was the life which Jesus Christ exhibited on the human plane, and it is the same life, not a copy of it, which is manifested in our mortal flesh when we are born of God. Eternal life is not a gift from God, eternal life is the gift of God. The energy and the power which were manifested in Jesus will be manifested in us by the sheer sovereign grace of God when once we have made the moral decision about sin.

“Ye shall receive the power of the Holy Ghost”—not power as a gift from the Holy Ghost; the power is the Holy Ghost, not something which He imparts. The life that was in Jesus is made ours by means of his Cross when once we make the decision to be identified with Him. If it is difficult to get right with God, it is because we will not decide definitely about sin. Immediately we do decide, the full life of God comes in. Jesus came to give us endless supplies of life: “that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.” Eternal Life has nothing to do with Time, it is the life which Jesus lived when He was down here. The only source of Life is the Lord Jesus Christ.

The weakest saint can experience the power of the Deity of the Son of God if once he is willing to ‘let go.’ Any strand of our own energy in ourselves will blur the life of Jesus. We have to keep letting go, and slowly and surely the great full life of God will invade us in every part, and men will take knowledge of us that we have been with Jesus.

Reflecting With God 4/13/2023

reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

Thursday Reflecting

The fragrance of your garments is like the fragrance of Lebanon. – Song of Solomon 4:11.

In the days when the Mosque of Omar was first built, over that spot of Moriah where the worshipper could touch a piece of the unhewn original rock of the hill, it was customary to bring loads of incense and all aromatic shrubs into the shrine, which was called Sakhrah. As a consequence, if any one from the city had been worshipping there, he carried away with him so much of the fragrance of the place, that when people passed him in the market-place of Jerusalem, or in the streets, they used to say to each other, “He has been in the Sakhrah to-day!” Would to God we thus lived, coming forth daily with our “garments” smelling of the “myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, from the ivory palaces.” With fresh holiness every day drawn out of Christ, what witnesses for Him should we be! How joyfully should we listen to the loving voice that is ever calling, “Be ye holy, for I am holy”; and He Who speaks thus would hasten to give us more and more when we repair to Him.

Daily Prayer & Praise 4/13/2023

prayer and praise header 4
Lord, hear our prayer:

Father, we come to you with empty hands to receive from you. We come with heavy hearts, that you might carry our burden. We come with our self-satisfaction, that you might open our eyes to the needs of others. We come with our self-centeredness, that you may deal with our deafness to the cries of our neighbor. We come with our hopes and our fears, our joys and our sorrows. We come as we are, longing to be made new. We come in the name of Jesus, because he first came to us.

Amen.
