Heaven or Hell

I know it seems the “theme” for today is Heaven and Hell, in fact, more Hell than Heaven. To be thoroughly honest, I don’t like to preach or speak about Hell. That’s not me – for the most part. BUT – it is a part of the Bible and when it comes to describing Hell, the Bible just about spends as much time describing Hell as it does the Heavenly Kingdom.

You can’t speak honestly about God Almighty, Creator and Father without also speaking about sin and the consequences of a life of continued sin, rejecting the WAY that The Father made for us to avoid being in bondage to sin and to the consequences associated with choosing to REJECT the WAY of Redemption.

The Bible speaks often of fiery torment, wailing and gnashing of teeth. We get an image of Hell and its inhabitants and the devil finally being bound and thrown into the Lake of Fire at the end of their time, but I want to share something I have thought of for the past few years.

We know the Bible is truth. We know because of the Living Word that Hell, the place of eternal punishment and torment is truth. Why would anyone choose to go there, rather than the promised Heavenly Kingdom of God. God is Life itself; He is Light, He IS Love. Any positive attribute you can think of can be ascribed to God’s Being and Nature. Yet God desires His creation to love Him voluntarily for Who He is and not for just what He can do for them. That is why He has given man the choice. That is why the two most obvious choices are voluntarily surrender to Him, just as Jesus Christ surrendered voluntarily to the Cross for mankind, as the example, or the second most obvious choice, to live a life of self-centeredness and selfishness.

Self-centeredness and selfishness allows you to do what you want, how you want for as long as you are alive in this natural world. The consequences are that there is no way to pay the penalty for that type of lifestyle if that is what you choose. It is a lifestyle that rejects God, rejects His Authority, His Sovereignty and all those Attributes that make Him God, Life, Light, Love, etc., etc.

Because of that fact, when it is time to apply those consequences that you have chosen, it will be a place, (NOW THINK HEAVY ON THIS), devoid of those Godly Attributes. No Life, No Light, not a glimmer, in fact it is beyond human imagining; AND not the minutest feeling of the Presence of God’s Love! All because a person rejects it in this life. But understand this; no matter how bad life is in the natural, in “the here and now,” there is ALWAYS “light at the end of the tunnel,” and whether you acknowledge it or even recognize it, God’s Love IS at play everywhere in this world. Right now, as I stated, even if you do not acknowledge it or even recognize it, God’s Love IS around us!

Here’s what the Apostle Paul wrote concerning this; “But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.” – 2 Corinthians 4:3-4.

Notice he gives two main reasons for the Word of God being rejected. Number one, it is veiled, hidden, because the god of this age, the devil, has blinded them and number two, to those who do not believe. The tense behind number two is those who CHOOSE not to believe, BECAUSE the light and glory of Christ, the image of God Himself, would shine on them, IF they did believe! Blame the devil all you want, but blame yourself also for your choice!

Oh yeah, Hell is real and as I stated, sincerely, I do NOT like to talk about it, but sometimes it is the Holy Spirit that compels and we have to be obedient. The older I have gotten the more I can see that in my heart and mind I desire the same thing that our Heavenly Father does. I know it’s not as perfect as Him, but it’s a start and it’s real; “For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” – 1 Timothy 2:3-4, and “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” – 2 Peter 3:9.

A lot of modern art and pictures depict Hell in a certain way. The only real descriptions are in the Word of God and if you DO happen to think about the possibilities, you too would not want anyone to perish!

“And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” – Matthew 10:28.

“And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” – Matthew 25:46.

“For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment; . . .” – 2 Peter 2:4.

As I stated, I don’t think those who paint and draw have an inkling of the truth, but the Apostle Paul gave us a glimpse that caused me to think about it; you reject God, you reject everything that IS God in your eternal choice. Far removed from His presence and from the glory of His power and WHO He is! Now THAT will be torment!

“These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, . . .” – 2 Thessalonians 1:9.

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”

“And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.” – 1 John 4:7-8, 16.

  1. A sobering message, Roland. Thank you for being obedient in sharing it.
Could some people really prefer spending eternity in hell to admitting that they need God’s forgiveness?

    • I can only say yes because the Bible says it, but in my small mind I just cannot comprehend it. Maybe it is because I already trust the Lord and have for so many years, but when I think of it, it almost makes my heart literally hurt! God Bless. We need to pray a lot!
