Is Life Worth Living? – C.I. Scofield

*Pastor’s Note: I know there is controversy surrounding Scofield as a minister and some things taking place in his life that causes one to wonder about his life. However, in much of his writings and in his publications he has demonstrated to many today, the anointing of the Holy Spirit. I am not going to judge his life, but when I find a great article that is Biblical and Scriptural, I have no problem sharing it.

CI Scofield wpCyrus Ingerson Scofield (August 19, 1843 – July 24, 1921) was an American theologian, minister, and writer whose best-selling annotated Bible popularized futurism and dispensationalism among fundamentalist Christians. As the author of the pamphlet “Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth” (1888), Scofield soon became a leader in dispensational premillennialism, a forerunner of twentieth-century Christian fundamentalism.

An Excerpt From His Sermon,
Is Life Worth Living?

“For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.” — Romans 14:7.

Today we are to ask the Bible to answer the deep question, “What is the true meaning of life?” I shall not insult your intelligence by one word of argument as to the importance of that question. You and I are conscious that we are living. We know that the mysterious and wonderful thing which we call life is passing rapidly away. What a mystery life is and one which science has not in the least helped us to solve. It is today the same inscrutable mystery it was centuries ago. That its issues are tremendously important, we know, and we ask what is the meaning, the true meaning, including, of course, the true purpose and object of life.

As a truth about which our thought may crystallize, and which I believe opens essentially the heart of the question, I have chosen for a text:

“For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.” – Romans 14:7.

In other words, it is impossible for us to isolate ourselves from humanity and from God. We can not do it. Now, I want to plead, first of all, in considering this question of the true meaning of life, for a frank recognition of this fact. No life has found its true meaning until the fact is frankly recognized that the chief value of that life is due to the investment which others have made in it. Your life is valuable to you, it is precious, in the measure in which others have made investments in it. The problem that is before us is not a problem which can be considered without reference to past, present or future. Think of the tremendous investment that others have made in your life and mine. For us, mothers have suffered and prayed. For us, fathers have toiled. Teachers have patiently invested years of effort to win us from ignorance into knowledge. All this has been done that our lives might have some kind of value; and the first right thought of life is that we recognize that that which gives our lives chiefest worth has been invested in us by others. My friends, you and I are the heirs of the ages. For you and me Moses wrote and David sang and the seers prophesied. For you and me, Homer chanted his deathless lays, and a thousand men of genius have toiled and thought and suffered, that you and I might be what we are today. We boast of our liberty; we are proud of being Americans; proud of having a government “of the people, by the people and for the people.” Did you or I ever do anything much that we might be free today — free to say the thing we believed; free to come and go, free to live out our lives? Columbus crossed the stormy seas, our fathers followed him, and in their toil and pain and self-denial wrought out this new empire for man.

“For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.” – Romans 14:7.

Can you dispense with all this increment of the thought and toil and suffering and sacrifice of the ages and go back to savagery? You can not do it if you would, and would not do it if you could. But how lightly you and I have been using this marvelous thing of life, as if it were only our own!

The second proposition is that no life has found its true meaning which does not take account of two worlds. The life that now is and that which is to come. Is it a credit to any one whose head is gray, that he begins to think of the other life? I would like to reach those whose heads are not gray, and plead with them to think while it is time, to redeem life from unbelief and baseness and selfishness and narrowness into faith and Tightness and nobility, to think of life as belonging to two worlds now. Two worlds, this one so brief, the other unending! What may be in store for us yonder? That is the question which lifts the temporary, the transitory, into eternal consequence and moment. What have I done today means something for me through all eternity. I have not begun to face the problem of life until I have seen that.

Then, I want to say that no life has found its true meaning which is not right with God. That is one of the last things we think of. By what strange involution of reason have men come to think that the principal business of life is to do approximately the right thing by our fellow man? Such a life leaves out of the problem its mightiest factor the final, determining factor of all life — God.

Let us think about this for a moment. We were speaking of investments making life precious and valuable. Dear friends, the investment of the ages in you and in me, the heirship which the poorest child born in civilization has by the very fact of being born, is but the smallest part, after all, of the investment which God Himself has made in your life and mine. In the first place, He gives that wonderful thing which we use lightly and think so ignobly about — life. How can a life be right which is out of harmony with its Creator? Science tells us, modern science, and so far I agree with it wholly, that the problem of life is being in harmony with environment. That is right. What is the environment of every human being? God.

Relationships In and With The Lord

*Pastor’s Note: This is another short article I wrote in the late 90s along with some others for the Church section of the local newspaper where we lived in Globe, Arizona. I thought it might interest my readers and I HAVE updated some of the Scriptures references. All in all, it is pretty much as it was published in the Church editorial of the newspaper. The pictures were added for this posting.

Our walk in and with the Lord is truly one of relationships. The funny thing about relationships is that no matter what your stand on a certain matter, you still have a relationship. You either have a close personal relationship or you have a meaningless or non-existent relationship. Either way it is still a relationship. It’s either positive, or it’s negative, but it still IS!

One of the greatest struggles that we who are striving to practice TRUE Christianity has, is in relationships with others who at the very least claim to be Christians. The thing is, what is supposed to be my duty to others? Well, the Bible is full of examples concerning what to do with those that are supposed to be Christians and those who have never claimed to be.

I first want to start out with the one scripture that I believe covers everything. You have heard me quote it before but it concerns an answer that Jesus gave to a Pharisee scholar and lawyer that was trying to trip Him up as they always tried, but never succeeded in actually doing.

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said to him,” ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ “This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ “On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” – Matthew 22:36-40.

Great Commandments

This is the foundation of each and every relationship that we have or will ever have; from even before our birth until long after our physical death, for this kind of love is eternal. This is the kind of love that Jesus as our Savior and Redeemer came to earth to share with all of humanity. Each and every person ever born or ever to be born has the opportunity AND choice to experience this type of love.

To truly experience the kind of love I’m talking about though takes relationship. Many people know OF Jesus as an historical figure and they might believe in A God or supreme being, but that doesn’t make a relationship anymore than me saying I know so and so is a lawyer, or a doctor and yet have never used their services!

God sent Jesus to earth to save and redeem us for one purpose. To restore a broken relationship with Him, as Heavenly Father, that was lost due to man’s early rebellion and disobedience against Him. That’s the reason we have the written Word of God AND the Living Word of God; it’s all about relationship!

“Oh, but I thought Jesus came so I will be saved and go to heaven.” So many believe this deep down. They believe the Word, the Holy Bible was given to show them how to be saved. That is a truth, but only in part. The Word of God, the Holy Bible was given to us under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, God’s Spirit, to show us WHO He, God truly is. It is meant to show us His character, nature, His attributes, His personality and every other aspect of His being that it takes to have a true and legitimate relationship. It shows us how to have a relationship with Him based on His Fatherhood. You can’t have a relationship with someone you don’t know and the only type of relationship with someone your are estranged from is a broken one! Jesus came as all God and all man to give us the opportunity to mend that broken relationship with the Father THROUGH Him as Christ.

God has always been a Redeemer to His chosen people, His children. Jesus came that the rest of mankind as well has the opportunity to be redeemed to their Creator as Father. Jesus came as the Living Word to SHOW us the Father by taking on the form of man, since God is Spirit. Man is so visual and that is part of the problems facing many today. This is why Jesus came as the Living Word, still living today, and why we have the written Word so that we can continue to “get the picture.” The Holy Spirit Who inspired the Written Word and is the Spirit of God the Father and Christ Jesus the Son, inspires and anoints us and His Word so that we DO get a clear picture.

personal relationship

If your spirit has be reborn, reawakened to God, Who is Spirit, then that is the Redemption that Christ Jesus came to provide so that we might have the relationship with the Father.

So today, you have a choice and that choice, because of God’s total love, is your ability to HAVE a close personal and intimate relationship with our Creator as Heavenly Father, or you have a relationship based on rejection and in essence, self-centeredness. God, because OF His love will allow you to choose and from that point on, your path is yours. That path is either surrendered to the Lord or total rejection of Him and what He offers you. He will NOT force you.

Every body in this life at one time or another is looking for that true love, that best and most intimate friendship, but due to human nature, you can always count on ups and downs, on and off types of situations in any relationship. When you choose God, He gives you a promise that He has never broken since the creation of man; “For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: “The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” – Hebrews 13:5b-6.

You can’t get that type of relationship in the natural; it can only come from our Heavenly Father.

Prayer For Wisdom

*Pastor’s Note: This was inspired by the daily Proverbs I am posting but in particular, Proverbs 4:7-13 and James 1:5.

Dearest Heavenly Father;

We come to You with open hands and an open heart and are humbled before You. We ask You for guidance during this and every day. Lord, please grant us wisdom, mercy, understanding and knowledge. Allow us dearest Father to see Your divine plan in the steps we take as we try and follow You and Your guidance, day by day. Lord, we depend totally upon You to guide us during the day, no matter what we may be doing during each day, we ask that we will hear Your voice guiding and leading us along the right paths.

Father in Heaven, we are not seeking fame nor fortune, only that our needs be met, but we do seek along with wisdom a greater faith and the ability to love more and more like You. Make our lives like an open book to others that are filled with examples and stories of Your love and mercy. Lord, help us with Your Holy Spirit to take to heart and spirit Your Word and help us to make it a part of our everyday lives that we might be an example of YOUR love to others around us.

Dear Lord, help us to be like the great leaders in the Bible that trusted in You and You alone to give them strength, guidance and protection. Reveal to us by Your Spirit what we must do and all the things we are meant to see as we continue on this journey and spiritual walk. We know that we ARE Your children and thus we are Your representatives in this world. Help us Lord, to always bring honor and glory to Your Holy Name in all the things we do for You.

Heavenly Father You have promised to freely give of Your wisdom to all who ask sincerely and fervently, without measure and we ask that Your wisdom, our faith and our hope IN You will be a bright Light to all those we encounter along our way, our neighbors as well as our brothers and sisters.

In all things we do, help us to ALWAYS bring You glory and honor, and we ask all these things in Jesus’ precious and holy Name! Amen and AMEN!

Words of Wisdom

*Pastor’s Note: Here is another poem I have had for some time now and it came from the internet, Author Unknown. If anyone knows the author of this poem, let me know by email so I can give them the proper credit. Thank You and God Bless!

Don’t be so busy adding up your troubles
that you forget to count your blessings, doubled.

Greater than the best of intentions,
is the smallest deed done without limitations.

Love is a language so often profound,
It’s enough to break chains of those who are bound.

A house is made of wooden beams
but a home is made of love and dreams.

To be a good friend open your ears, eyes and heart
more often than your mouth, that other often used part.

People don’t care how much you know,
it’s that you care, that they want to know.

There is tremendous happiness in bringing others joy,
despite any other situations, we may employ.

Shared grief is half the sorrow,
but happiness when shared, is doubled.

All the things you have that money can’t buy,
are the real reasons for your richest blessings and why.

Today is a gift, that’s why it is called the present.

Jude Verse 16

Jude 1:16, “These are grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts; and they mouth great swelling words, flattering people to gain advantage.”

I want to continue with the thoughts we left off with concerning the character and nature of those that Jude is describing, but I also want to remind you again and reiterate the fact that Jude is writing this TO the church and as a warning to stay vigilant and to continue to walk in holiness and Jude is reminding them that their daily walk is still a choice they have to make.

In verse 16 though, Jude goes into a bit more detail, a bit more descriptive of these apostates and false teachers, those that walked in the light and now have turned back into darkness. We seen Jude describe these as ungodly and he punctuated that fact by using that term four times in the previous verses.

So in this verse, Jude describes their ungodly words and deeds in much more detail. Why would he be so specific? Remember, he is writing to the church, WARNING the church of what to look out for as some of these people creep in stealthily and unawares. In other words, they may speak the Word of God, just like the devil did with Jesus, they may appear to be saying all the right things and even engage in “religious speak” but eventually their true nature will come out by their deeds AND their speech.

warning

I can’t help but go back to some of the words of Jesus, Himself when He walked with the disciples. Remember particularly chapter 7 of the Gospel of Matthew. “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them.” – Matthew 7:15-20.

So many in the churches today are quick to point out that you can’t judge. The first part of this chapter is explicit in that, but it is misrepresented so much due to lack of teaching and lack of study. The Lord Himself is warning the Church that we have to be on guard and be aware! I’m sorry, but you have to get YOUR theology right with the Word of God and not the other way around. We WILL know the false and the apostates by their fruit produced but many times an even quicker way is found with something else Jesus stated.

You can find this in the Gospel of Matthew also, but I love to use the Gospel of Luke for this; “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” – Luke 6:45. In Luke’s account this comes right after the warning about knowing them by their fruit.

Well, according to the Lord, we will also know them according to their speech for what truly is buried deep within the heart, will come out through a person’s communication. Do get what I’m saying? In today’s world it is not just the speech from one’s mouth, but what is it that a person communicates the most in ALL forms of media? All you have to have is a Facebook or Instagram account to know what I am talking about! What a person truly loves, they broadcast it the most over all forms of media.

grumblers complainers

So anyway, Jude goes on to give us more detailed descriptions. They are grumblers and complainers, always speaking out against everybody, including God Almighty and everything else. I’m not talking about just not liking some situation, I mean they do what they can to make others miserable as well, never giving or demonstrating thanks and thankfulness for God’s provisions or His mercies. If you don’t believe that God abhors and hates that kind of grumbling and complaining, just go back and look at the instances of when Israel, God’s chosen people kept this up and the punishment and discipline meted out by our Holy God!

These people are always finding fault with the Lord and God’s ways and plans. Have you heard this; why does a loving God always allow war and suffering? Why doesn’t He put an end to social and civil injustice? IF, notice that subtle word meant to cause doubt and confusion, IF He is so powerful and real, then why doesn’t He do something about the mess the world is in? Does this sound familiar? And I’m not just asking concerning those in the world!

What about this; these people also grumble and complain about God’s people for being full of hate speech, narrow-minded and legalistic when it comes to what they believe. Now mind you, I’m not just talking about the world. I’m talking about those that jump from church to church questioning God’s authority and why do you have to act or be a certain way if you have truly been forgiven from past, present and future sins? And this is a comment that I heard on one of the Christian groups on Facebook from someone who by the way doesn’t contribute other than to comment on what others write; once Christ doesn’t impute sin, you are freed from not just past sins, but present and future sins. This person completely avoided, even when asked about repentance, being holy as God is holy, sanctification, walking in the Spirit and a whole realm of other questions. He was actually trying to justify a sinful lifestyle under the guise of that sinner loving the Lord. Of course, not loving the Lord enough to change or even repent of the lifestyle, because love covers that continual sin and because he made a confession, any sin from that point on is no longer imputed against him. My brothers and sisters, that is the essence of the very Gnostic teaching that the Apostle John and the other writers warned the church about. Two thousand years later and we are still dealing with variants of that false teaching!

Flesh-vs-spirit

Along those lines, Jude goes on to say they walk or live lustfully indulging in the passions of the flesh AND being the loudest in their advocating of all types of permissiveness, not just in the flesh but in the sexual passions as well.

Many times they are very charismatic and charming, yet their arrogant speech garners a lot of attention and at times even seems to have merit. By their often opinionated and shocking statements about politics, the economy and social extremism and liberalism, they often make headlines and garner attention to themselves, being attention-seekers. These are ones that often make bold and shameless comments against even some of the most basic of Christian doctrines and the foundations that even Christ Jesus laid down. This is why we have so many liberal theologians today. Many who espouse that what was once legitimate and sound is no longer relevant in today’s “progressive” societal systems.

Jude goes on to say that many of them are skilled in the art of flattery and thus easily gather a following for themselves AND as situations are proving today, they are able to make an income for themselves as well from these ideas themselves, some of which are also theological in nature!

It is a sad, sad situation that as time keeps going by, day after day, the media outlets that once were so relied upon is proving Jude’s words ever more true. I’m sorry, but if you don’t see it so readily in your community, all you have to do is turn on the news OR peruse the social media platforms. The sad fact is, it is blatantly being played out right in front of our eyes and even as Jude was giving warning to the Church, all you have to do is visit various “religious” groups to see the mixture of partial truths mixed in with some truths.

We have been warned to be on the lookout and to also KNOW what to lookout for and yet so many today, and I’m talking about “churched” people, tend to leave that job to their pastors or elders, trusting that someone will keep an eye out for them so they don’t have to worry.

love breaks chains

All the more reason, we need to pray continually for one another as well as the lost. We need to hold one another up in love, which means that at times, whether you think it is “politically correct” or not you need to remind others of not just appearances but of speech. That is, if you truly love them with a Godly, eternal love. If you are more concerned about the here and now, then forget what I just said. True love doesn’t not have the motive of wanting to hurt another, but true love IS meant to free another and sometimes when another is in bondage to something, the action of helping them loose those chains can hurt but it is never for the long term.

Anyway, more to come from Jude. God bless you all abundantly!

Next post we will begin with Jude verse 17.

It Is The Gift From God

Ephesians 2:8-9, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

These two verses probably are the most concise verses on salvation that you will find recorded in just about ANY version of the Bible! Now let me clarify that; I have checked numerous versions and no matter how you read it, each one says the same thing but for some reason beyond my understanding people STILL get the interpretation confused and muddy! With all the various translations, it is hard for me to comprehend how that happens and yet it does.

Now here’s the thing; I’m not an English major or anything of the sort and I’m sure there are many of you out there that could explain this verse using all sorts of grammatical formulas and equations, but to me, I just look at the sentence structure and I trust the Holy Spirit that is within me.

gift of salvation

First off, believe it or not, there is a minority of teachers and preachers that preach that what the Apostle Paul is describing as the GIFT from God, is our faith. Well, faith is a gift from God no doubt about it but that is NOT the point he is making here. You have to apply his points to the main subject he is referring too and what is that subject? It’s SALVATION. The key word in these two verses is SAVED, meaning the subject is our salvation.  Now I’m not one to always go with the flow, but I will tell you this; there are way too many preachers, teachers and theologians who believe this and take it as commonplace and standard. But today, for some reason, it is anything but. It’s like some people just have to make things more difficult than they are meant to be.

Now, before going on, my concentration in this lesson is more in keeping with the gift aspect as described by James in his Epistle. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” – James 1:17.

If you have been a Christian for even a short amount of time, you already know the importance of grace and of faith. For now, those are lessons for another time. What I want to concentrate on is this part of Ephesians, “it is the gift of God, . . .” – Ephesians 2:8c. Simple statement and it is almost translated the same in all the various versions as stated above.

So, just to make it clear again, the “gift” that Paul is referring too in this passage is the gift of salvation by grace. In all my years of walking or trying to walk with the Lord, there have been stumbles along the way, I have found there is no more amazing and no greater gift than the one that our Heavenly Father, God Almighty, our Creator, has offered through Jesus Christ! All men, because of the nature of sin, are headed to one eternal destination, the darkness and pain of the Lake of Fire and mankind deserves nothing less, EXCEPT for the fact that our loving Heavenly Father made a way through the shed blood, death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ to that we also, joined with Him, might also be raised to eternal life and reign with Him as co-heirs forever. The thing about this “gift” is that God has made it available to ALL and it is free to all, as His gift to us, if we simply receive it by faith.

faith to believe God

I love to use the following example and analogy:

God the Father has invited all of mankind to a party. This party starts when we are born and ends with our individual death. It is an ongoing, lifetime party as long as there is one person alive. At this party is His Son, Jesus Christ, and Jesus has arrayed a large table with a glorious gift spread out, one for each individual specifically. It is your personal gift from Him. The only thing you have to do, is at some time during this party, you have to RSVP Jesus by faith to receive the gift specifically set aside for you individually. You’re already at the party, you just have to confess and reply you want the gift He has for you.

The sad part of the situation is that some people become so wrapped up in the goings on at the party, they ignore the gift that is offered, though it is a very, very valuable gift. Some reject the gift, stating they don’t NEED this gift offered and then there are those who just don’t believe the gift is given freely without a catch. So, many are part of the party, they are aware the Host is there, but they are just more interested in what everyone else is doing and what other things they can get at this party that they ignore the most precious gift available to them, when all they have to do is reply that they want to receive THEIR gift.

Remember, the Father invited everyone, everywhere throughout history and this party will go on until the Father deems it is over. The gift is available to everyone even though the “party-goers” do not necessarily deserve such a valuable gift. However, because of His love for each and every “party-goer,” He has made sure there is enough of this gift to go around. It’s that simple.

Mankind, Created by God for His love as a whole has rejected and rebelled against God. Yet in His love for His creation, He has made a plan for each and every individual; individuals who will never be able to afford this gift, but because of His favor towards His Creation He gives the gift of salvation freely, through Jesus Christ Who prepared this gift for mankind as a WHOLE, and all we have to do is believe He has the gift available and to confess or state that fact that first starts as belief in our hearts!

not by works

There is no way we can earn or even purchase this gift. It has to be received freely even though there are those who would like to tell you that you have to find a way to EARN this gift! In direct contradiction to what our Heavenly Father states! Some just can’t seem to accept anything offered freely because deep down it is an affront to their pride. So in essence, many of these people try to hard to earn or purchase this gift in their own way, but they just can’t. There is nothing they have of value that can even begin to pay for it. That is why Jesus prepared it Himself and why the Father offers it to everyone so freely.

This is why the Apostle Paul spent so much of his teaching trying to correct this misconception. This is why he finished off his simple and concise statement on salvation by grace through faith with this final word, it is “not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

No one can boast of their ability to earn or purchase it. All glory, all thanks, all honor goes to God and God alone, because of the very fact that it IS through faith. It IS a gift from God and finally, it is NOT of works!

Now in closing there is only one final question; did you RSVP Jesus (confess with your mouth) and have you received your individual gift of salvation?

I truly hope you give serious thought to this! Amen!

Jesus Is My Everything

*Pastor’s Note: I have had this poem for some time now and it came from the internet, Author Unknown. If anyone knows the author of this poem, let me know by email so I can give them the proper credit. Thank You and God Bless!

One night, Jesus asked me in a dream

“Who do You say I am?” I answered

“You are Christ the Savior, Son of the Living God.”

He replied, “Yes, I am Your First, I am Your Last

I am Your Abundant Life, I am Your Head, I am Your Friend

I am Your Happiness, I am Your Water, I am Your Bread

I am Your Deliverer, I am Your Righteousness, I am Your Security

I am Your Peace and I am Your Answer.”

Then Jesus asked me again, “Who do you say I am?”

And I answered,

“You are My Everything”

Jesus is my everything

God Is Our Fortress, Rock, Strong Tower, Refuge

*Pastor’s Note: Keeping with the theme of God being our Fortress and Rock, I thought I would put together some Bible descriptions that go along with the names that God was referred to in the Bible describing Him as our Refuge.

God Our Fortress and Refuge, Our Rock

Unlike Europe and Asia, America has little history of refuges and fortresses. But in Old Testament days, refuge or fortress was a very real need. Unwalled villages were clustered around walled stronghold cities, where residents in the region would flee in times of war. High towers and ramparts could be defended against a force many times their size. A number of words describing fortresses are used as metaphors of God’s defense and protection.

God is a place of refuge during siege, but also a place of personal refuge. The Ancient Near East was plagued by bandits, gangs of marauding raiders who would pounce on an unprotected village, take its plunder, rape its women, and perhaps take slaves or slaughter the inhabitants. In times like these, God is seen as a great rock in which to hide, a hiding place.

Fortress:

“Fastness, stronghold, fortress.” Masada, Herod the Great’s fortress-palace plateau near the Dead Sea comes from the word fortress. In 1 Samuel 23:14, 19, and 29, David hides from Saul in the natural mountain strongholds in the wilderness and near Engedi

Fortress refuge:

“Place of refuge, shelter, to seek refuge, flee for protection.”

Strong tower:

“Great or tall place, tower, grow up, become great.” Probably deriving from early times when the tower was the largest (greatest) structure in a town.  Strong tower is a pair of words.

Stronghold, high tower:

“High place, refuge, inaccessibly high,” and is used in Psalm 91:14 with the connotation, “to set on high,” and “to defend” or “protect.” It’s also used as a descriptor of God in 2 Samuel 22:3 and Psalm 46:7, 11.

Refuge:

“Place of escape. To flee,” which denotes rapid movement away from, or escape from real or imagined danger.

Refuge, stronghold:

“Place of strength,” hence, of safety. It is most commonly used figuratively, designating God as the refuge of his people.

Refuge, strong habitation:

“Place of habitation, dwelling,” from  the word meaning “to dwell.”

Rock:

“Split rock, cleft rock, rock, cliff, to split.” Thus this also refers basically to a cleft in a rock, such as a rock or cliff. Also, massive rock. This word is used for boulders or formations of stone, and for the material which composes mountains. The caves of the rocks are places where David and his men sought safety when they were being hunted by King Saul and his armies. Yahweh is called a Rock many times.

While each of these words has its own flavor, when used as a metaphor of God’s protection, they are often used closely as synonyms, rather than emphasizing the major differences between the words.

Prayer To Let Our Light Shine

*Pastor’s Note: This was inspired by the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 5 verse 16. “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” (NASB)

Heavenly Father,

We acknowledge that You are in control of all things and that throughout the ages and even now You alone are Sovereign and that You reign not just in the Heavens but also within our hearts. You alone Lord are worthy of our praise, worship and exultation. Your glory is from everlasting to everlasting!

We thank You that You shine Your light through us most especially in any and all circumstances in which we find ourselves. We are to let our lights shine before others that they may see our good works and glorify You in heaven. Let us never forget we are the light of the world. It is our desire to shine brightly before others, allowing our attitude, words, and actions to reflect the values of Jesus. We will carry the light of Your salvation through our words, our actions, and the way in which we seek to be fruitful producing only good fruit where we are planted.

We want our lives to be a testimony to Your goodness. We pray that You would use us to spread light to those in need, and that all our good deeds and works will glorify You. Father, in Your infinite wisdom You give us daily strength and spiritual resolve to carry on in the darkest of circumstances so that the light of Christ might be made manifest in our lives for others to see. Continue to strengthen us I pray.

It’s in Jesus’ name that we pray. Amen and AMEN!
