Reflecting With God 6/27/2022

reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

All Scriptures Used are NKJV, New King James Version

For Monday June 27, 2022:

Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham. – Genesis 22:1.

Temptation is that which puts to the test. Trials sent by God do this. A test is never employed for the purpose of injury. A weight is attached to a rope, not to break, but to prove it. Pressure is applied to a boiler, not to burst it, but to certify its power of resistance. The testing process here confers no strength. But when a sailor has to navigate his ship under a heavy gale and in a difficult channel; or when a general has to fight against a superior force and on disadvantageous ground, skill and courage are not only tested, but improved. The test has brought experience, and by practice is every faculty perfected. So, faith grows stronger by exercise, and patience by the enduring of sorrow. Thus alone it was that “God did tempt Abraham.”

ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

When answers to questions are hard to find,

We struggle within and our minds go blind,

We try as we will to figure it out,

We fret and we worry, we cry and pout,

We try to do what is out of our realm,

Instead of placing our God at the helm.

Inside of ourselves we’re hopelessly lost,

Our thoughts are unclear and our minds are tossed,

To find our true worth we must search without,

To God, our dear Father, we plead and shout,

Our voices He hears and answers in time,

He lifts us up with His power divine,

When you change your focus and don’t give up,

The Shepherd of heaven will fill your cup.

God promises to be with us in all seasons of our lives. He gives us purpose and unconditional love. We can’t hide from Him, even if we try. He will seek us out and find us. To me, that is the comfort of the ages.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

prayer and praise header 3
Augustine of Hippo, Prayer of Thanksgiving for Sunday 6-26-2022

We turn to the Lord God, the Father almighty, and with pure hearts offer to Him, so far as our meanness can, great and true thanks, with all our hearts praying His exceeding kindness, that of His good pleasure He would deign to hear our prayers, that by His power He would drive out the enemy from our deeds and thoughts, that He would increase our faith, guide our understandings, give us spiritual thoughts, and lead us to His bliss, through Jesus Christ His Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with Him, in the Unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

Amen.

Centuries of Meditations – First Century 3-4

devotionals header

Thomas Traherne ( 1637 – September 27, 1674) was an English poet, Anglican cleric, theologian, and religious writer. Traherne’s writings frequently explore the glory of creation and what he saw as his intimate relationship with God. His writing conveys an ardent, almost childlike love of God, and is compared to similar themes in the works of later poets William Blake, Walt Whitman, and Gerard Manley Hopkins. His love for the natural world is frequently expressed in his works.

The work for which Traherne is best known today is the Centuries of Meditations, a collection of short paragraphs in which he reflects on Christian life and ministry, philosophy, happiness, desire and childhood. This was first published in 1908 after having been rediscovered in manuscript ten years earlier. Before its rediscovery this manuscript was said to have been lost for almost two hundred years and is now considered a much loved devotional.

THE FIRST CENTURY

3

I will open my mouth in Parables, I will utter things that have been kept secret from the foundation of the world. Things strange yet common, incredible, yet known; most high, yet plain; infinitely profitable, but not esteemed. Is it not a great thing that you should be Heir of the World? Is it not a great enriching verity? In which the fellowship of the Mystery which from the beginning of the World hath been hid in God lies concealed! The thing hath been from the Creation of the World, but hath not so been explained as that the interior Beauty should be understood. It is my design therefore in such a plain manner to unfold it that my friendship may appear in making you possessor of the whole world.

4

I will not by the noise of bloody wars and the dethroning of kings advance you to glory: but by the gentle ways of peace and love. As a deep friendship meditates and intends the deepest designs for the advancement of its objects, so doth it shew itself in choosing the sweetest and most delightful methods, whereby not to weary but please the person it desireth to advance. Where Love administers physic, its tenderness is expressed in balms and cordials. It hateth corrosives, and is rich in its administrations. Even so God, designing to show His Love in exalting you hath chosen the ways of ease and repose by which you should ascend. And I after His similitude will lead you into paths plain and familiar, where all envy, rapine, bloodshed, complaint and malice shall be far removed; and nothing appear but contentment and thanksgiving. Yet shall the end be so glorious that angels durst not hope for so great a one till they had seen it.

Preparation – Benefits Of

anecdotal stories

So teach us to number our days, That we may present to You a heart of wisdom. – Psalm 90:12.

But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence. – 1 Peter 3:15.

To Pay The Price

Alexander Campbell, the brilliant leader of the Restoration Movement in the nineteenth century, often studied sixteen hours a day, rising at 4:00 A.M. to work uninterrupted in his study. He spoke without notes but never without preparation. With only two hours notice, he preached his famous sermon on the law to a group of Baptist pastors. One pastor later said that Campbell had broken more light from the book of Romans than any man he had heard preach.

In his debate with skeptic Robert Owen over the nature and historicity of Christianity, Campbell spoke for twelve hours on the evidences for Christianity as a supernatural religion after Owen had exhausted his objections to Christianity. One who heard him at the time declared, “I have been listening to a man who seems as one who has lived in all ages.” Mr. Owen, hitherto unchecked by religious leaders, went back to Scotland, taking his infidelity with him.

Our life with God is as enjoyable, fruitful, and educational as we determine. Our knowledge of God is as deep as we desire. We can rise early, or retire later, in order to read the Bible and pray. Perhaps we will never be called to Alexander Campbell’s significance, but we are challenged to set Christ apart as Lord so we can give an accounting to those who ask about our faith.

Christ and The Bible – John R. Rice – 2

great sermons header

main pic - john r. rice John R. Rice (December 11, 1895 – December 29, 1980) Preacher … evangelist … revivalist … editor … counselor to the thousands … friend to millions—that was Dr. John R. Rice, whose accomplishments were nothing short of miraculous. Known as “America’s Dean of Evangelists,” Dr. Rice made a mighty impact upon the nation’s religious life for some sixty years in great citywide campaigns and in Sword of the Lord conferences.

Like many other strong fighters for the faith, Rice was also marked with a sincere spirit of compassion. Those who knew him best knew a man who loved them. In preaching, in prayer and in personal life, Rice wept over sinners and with saints.

The Infallible Inspiration of the Bible

“Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” – Mark 8:38.

1. Bible Literally God’s Word

What does inspiration of the Bible mean? I start with a classic, well-understood verse, or at least one fairly well understood, 2 Timothy 3:16: “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable …” All Scripture is inspired. We talk about the inspiration of the Scripture. Actually, what the Lord says is not so much that God breathed upon the Bible or even that He breathed into the Bible, but that He breathed out the Bible.

The Bible is the breath of God. The Bible proceeded from out of the being of God. God breathed out the Bible. It is not merely that God breathed on men who wrote, but that which came out—the Bible itself—was breathed out from God.

Incidentally, as you know, in the Greek the term for breath or wind and spirit are the same. The Holy Spirit of God came upon men, and God breathed out through His Spirit the Word of God. Not that God supervised men, not that He touched men, but that He moved men to say what He breathed out Himself. The Bible is breathed out from God, is a product of God, and thus is the Word of God.

In 2 Peter 1:19 we read:

“We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed.”

More sure? Yes. More sure than what? More sure than eyewitness. Said Peter in verse 16, “We … were eyewitnesses of his majesty.” More sure than what? The voice of God from Heaven saying, “This is my beloved Son.” Peter said we have something more sure than that: ‘More sure than eyewitness; more sure than hearing a voice from Heaven.’ “We have … a more sure word.” What’s that? The Bible.

The Bible is more sure than if a man heard God talking from Heaven, as Peter did on the Mount of Transfiguration, more sure than when Peter saw Jesus transfigured before him literally. The Bible is more sure than that. It is literally from God without reference to whether man saw it right or heard it right. The Bible is from God. It is more sure than anything received by the human senses and perception.

Peter then said:

“Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.”

“For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”—2 Pet. 1:20, 21.

Men were moved by the Holy Ghost. They spake as they were moved. It is not that God said, “Now I must supervise this fellow. Being so smart, he can do most of it right. I’ll watch and see that he makes no mistake. Go ahead and pick out your own words.”

No, no! God put the words in his mouth.

The other day I got a card from my little granddaughter, less than two years old. She signed her name “Linda Jo.” But Mother moved the hand, though Linda held the pen.

I am saying that God Himself moved the men when they wrote the Scriptures. Inspiration—what does that mean? Not just supervision, not just some correction of mistakes, but the words came from God. The Scriptures were breathed out from God. The men who wrote held the pen, but God held the man who held the pen. Literally, this is the Word of God, not the word of man.

In 1 Thessalonians 2:13 Paul says:

“For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God.”

Not the word of men, but the Word of God. Paul spoke it, but it wasn’t Paul’s word. Paul wrote down his epistles, but they were not Paul’s except in the sense of identifying the penman. They were not the words of a man; they were in truth the words of God.

How often the Bible is called the Word of God.

The Bible never says “approximately the Word of God.” The Bible never speaks of “relatively the Word of God.” The Bible never says this is the “record of the Words of God.” The Bible never says that the Scriptures “contain the Word of God.” No! This is in truth the Word of God.

To Be Continued . . .

The Blessings of Brokenness

thought of day header

For Sunday June 26, 2022:

THE BLESSINGS OF BROKENNESS

Jeremiah 23:9 (NKJV)
My heart within me is broken Because of the prophets; All my bones shake.

The word broken occurs twenty-eight times in the book of Jeremiah, and three more times in his book of Lamentations. Jeremiah was a man whose heart was broken by the sins of his people and the tragedies of his times. We feel his sadness throughout the book as he says things like, “Why did I come forth from the womb to see labor and sorrow?” (Jeremiah 20:18).

Yet think of how greatly God used Jeremiah despite—or because of—his broken heart! He drew people to God in his own day, he predicted the return of Israel from exile in future days, and his book has been ministering to the world for 2,600 years!

The Bible says that we are able to comfort others with the comfort God gives to us in broken times (2 Corinthians 1:3–7).

We can’t always avoid broken hearts, broken relationships, broken promises, and even broken items. But when our brokenness is laid at the feet of Jesus, He can use our shattered circumstances to draw others to Him, and we can rejoice in spite of our pain.
After all, Jesus Himself was broken and spilled out for us.

Come, oh come, with thy broken heart, weary and worn with care;
Come and kneel at the open door, Jesus is waiting there.

The Meaning of The Rapture For Everyday Life – 3

prophetic words header wp

Pastor’s Note: The following excerpt is a continuation from the article I posted last week. Like the Apostle Paul told the Thessalonians, we SHOULD be comforting one another with the Scriptural prophecies that have been given us in God’s written word. Put your trust in the eternal word!

As with any of these articles that are not mine, the credit is listed at the end of the excerpted article and all rights are reserved to the author and publisher.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-21, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.” KNJV (Bold emphasis, added).

The Rapture Has a Cleansing Influence on Sinning Hearts

When people used to come up to Donald Grey Barnhouse, the pastor of Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, and ask him a prophecy question, he would ask them if they knew 1 John 3:2–3. If they said no, then he told them to go look it up and read it before he would answer their question. Barnhouse wanted to make sure that those interested in the Lord’s coming were living in light of it.

Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.
1 John 3:2–3 (NASB)

A proper understanding of the Rapture should produce a life of holiness and purity. Focusing the mind and heart on Christ’s coming can powerfully motivate our efforts toward living a pure life. Note the certainty: “And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.” Here is a perfect prescription for living a life of holiness—focusing on the Rapture. How can we be riveted by the Rapture and live an impure life at the same time? First John 3:3 says it can’t happen. Fixing our hope on Christ and His coming is a purifying hope.

In 2011, Harold Camping set two different dates for the Rapture. Of course, he was wrong both times. I always like to say when someone sets a date for the Rapture that you can be sure that’s not the day. All date setting is foolish and futile (Matthew 24:36; Luke 21:8). However, I’m sure that Camping’s reckless actions did cause some people to reexamine their lives just in case he might be correct.

We are to live as if Jesus could come at any time, and if this becomes real to us it will transform our lives. The Bible declares that we are to always be looking for Christ’s coming, not just when someone sets an arbitrary date. “Live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:12–13, NASB).

Prophecy and purity are mentioned together in Romans 13:11–14:

This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living. Because we belong to the day, we must live decent lives for all to see. Don’t participate in the darkness of wild parties and drunkenness, or in sexual promiscuity and immoral living, or in quarreling and jealousy. Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires.

Second Peter 3:10–14 also presents the practical, cleansing effect of prophecy.

The day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless. (NASB)

When anyone says that studying Bible prophecy is impractical or irrelevant to everyday life, they reveal that they don’t understand what the Bible says about the personal impact of prophecy. In an immoral, sinful society like ours what could be more important and down to earth than personal purity? Many people view prophecy as having no real impact on everyday life. Living a godly life is the essence of a walk with Christ. What could be more practical?[1]

Prayer for Friday 6-24-2022

Lord our God, we lift our hearts to You, our help in every need. You do so much for us even in difficult times, letting us always see and experiencing Your light and giving us Your help in the many things You want us to bear in Your strength, Oh Almighty God. In the end You will help our age come to Your light. Through Your great mercy let us receive Your Word. Bless it within our hearts, and help us to serve You everywhere we go and in everything we are allowed to do. In the name of our Savior, Redeemer and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Psalm 86:15 – Ole Hallesby

thought of day header

For Friday June 24, 2022:

PSALM 86:15

Psalm 86:15 (NKJV)
But You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious.

Yes, says the honest doubter, I, too, would like to believe in a merciful God. But war, suffering, sorrow, and distress, what do you do about them, you who believe? Do you close your eyes to these things?

No, but I believe in a merciful God, I cannot refrain from that. When He received me, miserable wretch that I was, and blotted out all my sins, taking my weary, frightened soul to His own heart, I met a merciful God. I know that He is merciful, even though I come upon many things in this world which I do not understand.

But, then, God has never demanded of me that I should understand Him and all that He does. All He expects is that I should believe in Him.

However, some things I do seem to understand.

I remember from the time that I was a little child that when my father disciplined me I thought at times that he was unmerciful. But now I thank him because he had the wisdom and courage to do so.

Our heavenly Father, too, is so merciful that He chastens us. And even though the chastening, while it lasts, seems hard, nevertheless, afterwards, we see His mercy.

Oh, how merciful! He gives us sorrow in the world, but joy in the Lord. He permits us to be ill in body, but well in soul. He makes us poor in the things of this earth, but rich in peace and hope.

Suffering child of God! It is not dangerous to suffer. In this world we are to suffer. Christ went before us also in this respect. We are to follow Him also in suffering. You are making good use of your time when you suffer.

You are suffering unjustly, you say?

Oh, well, neither is that dangerous. That is the way Jesus suffered all His life.

O Thou merciful God, teach us to know Thy mercy!

Reflecting With God 6/24/2022

reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

All Scriptures Used are NKJV, New King James Version

For Friday June 24, 2022:

Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham. – Genesis 22:1.

God sends us no trial, whether great or small, without first preparing us. Trials are God’s vote of confidence in us. Many a trifling event is sent to test us, ere a greater trial is permitted to break on our heads. We are set to climb the lower peaks before urged to the loftiest summits with their virgin snows; are made to run with the footmen, before contending with horses; are taught to wade in the shallows, before venturing into the swell of the ocean waves.

Daily Prayer & Praise 6/23/2022

Prayer for Thursday 6-23-2022

Lord our God, grant Your peace in our hearts. Grant that we may ever be Your children, allowed to serve You in true peace through the forgiveness of our sins. Turn Your eyes to the world and its sin, that something new may come for all who are deeply unhappy, groaning under the anguish of their lives. Your mercy is great, Your compassion is beyond measure. For Jesus Christ’s sake we know You will bring into the world the salvation that is promised. You will bring the great day of Jesus Christ the Savior, who has shed His blood for all mankind. He can come to those now in need and misery, bringing His peace and His power into their hearts so that even death turns into life and everything serves Your praise and glory, Lord our God and Father in Heaven. Bless us and bless our nation. Save this nation that once served You. May life from Heaven grow in those who understand You and who are to be Your people. May Your will be done, Lord God, until Your Kingdom comes in its fullness and all the world may see that Jesus Christ is the Lord, to Your glory, Oh God our Father. In His precious name we beseech You.

Amen.

Oil From Moses’ Crib

The fact that the Standard Oil Company discovered oil and is operating wells in Egypt is generally known but the reason for its going to that ancient land to look for oil is probably not so well known.

It is asserted that one of the directors of the company happened to read the second chapter of Exodus. The third verse caught his attention. It states that the ark of bulrushes which the mother of Moses made for her child was “daubed with slime and with pitch.”

This gentleman reasoned that where there was pitch, there must be oil, and if there was oil in Moses’ time it is probably still there. So the company sent out Charles Whitshott, its geologist and oil expert, to make investigations, with the result that oil was discovered.

And a man of the house of Levi went and took as wife a daughter of Levi. So the woman conceived and bore a son. And when she saw that he was a beautiful child, she hid him three months. But when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of bulrushes for him, daubed it with asphalt and pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank. – Exodus 2:1-3

Acquaintance With Grief – Oswald Chambers

thought of day header

For Thursday June 23, 2022:

ACQUAINTANCE WITH GRIEF

Isaiah 53:3 (NKJV)
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.

We are not acquainted with grief in the way in which Our Lord was acquainted with it; we endure it, we get through it, but we do not become intimate with it. At the beginning of life we do not reconcile ourselves to the fact of sin. We take a rational view of life and say that a man by controlling his instincts, and by educating himself, can produce a life which will slowly evolve into the life of God. But as we go on, we find the presence of something which we have not taken into consideration, viz., sin, and it upsets all our calculations. Sin has made the basis of things wild and not rational. We have to recognize that sin is a fact, not a defect; sin is red-handed mutiny against God. Either God or sin must die in my life. The New Testament brings us right down to this one issue. If sin rules in me, God’s life in me will be killed; if God rules in me, sin in me will be killed. There is no possible ultimate but that. The climax of sin is that it crucified Jesus Christ, and what was true in the history of God on earth will be true in your history and in mine. In our mental outlook we have to reconcile ourselves to the fact of sin as the only explanation as to why Jesus Christ came, and the explanation of the grief and sorrow in life.

Reflecting With God 6/23/2022

reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

All Scriptures Used are NKJV, New King James Version

For Thursday June 23, 2022:

“In Isaac your seed shall be called.” – Genesis 21:12.
Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” – Genesis 22:2.

“In Isaac shall thy seed be called”—there was a promise. “Offer Isaac for a burnt-offering”—there was a command. How did Abraham reconcile them? He did not, he could not. He simply obeyed the command, and God fulfilled the promise. The reconcilement was complete.

The Wind of The Spirit

“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” – John 3:8.

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. – Acts 2:2.

I’ve written about it before, but once again I was truly inspired by it. By what, you might ask? Well, outside my office window about fifty feet in the back yard of our neighbor is what I like to call my “inspiration tree.” We’ve lived in this house for going on ten years on July 4th and that tree has always been an inspiration from day one. It’s one of the reasons I chose this room for my office.

There are times when I’m praying or reading my Bible (or both) when I look out and just get lost in the tree, it’s look depending on the season, how green, or how varied in color and at times how barren. There’s hardly a time when I don’t see a couple of squirrels scurrying around in it and the birds love that tree. Yep, it’s truly my “inspiration tree.” I’ve actually done a video lesson using it as an illustration.

But the other day, the wind was howling! I’m not being dramatic either. In the ten years we’ve been here, this year has seen the strongest, most powerful winds that I have witnessed. I’ve had the opportunity to talk with some “long-timers” from the area and many of them also state they hadn’t seen the wind blow quite so hard as it has this year.

pd inspiration treeOn this particular day, I thought for sure this large tree was going to either topple over or break some of its branches, but its roots must go deep. It swayed and you could see the leaves just shaking and a few dead branches did fall, but it looks as sturdy today as I’m writing this as it ever has. That was with fifty to sixty mile an hour gusts according to the weather bureau.

But as I was praying and fascinated by how it was standing against that onslaught of something I couldn’t see at all, and as I saw the dead leaves and a few dead branches fall, and cotton type seeds blowing all over as if it were snow, it made me think of the power, magnificence and glory of the Holy Spirit.

By virtue of Him being Spirit, He can’t be seen. You couldn’t point Him out to anyone and if someone asked you what He looked like, all you could do would be to ask them what the wind looked like!

Now here’s something I find so interesting concerning the Word of God which I truly love and find so fascinating and deep. There is no Hebrew or Greek word that exclusively means “spirit”; however, the concept of spirit is most commonly put forth with words that also mean “wind” or “breath” such as the Hebrew word, rûaḥ, which can refer to the wind, or the breath of someone or something that is alive, or as spirit, the living essence of a living creature. You truly have to understand the context of what the writer is putting forth to know which English word is meant from the Hebrew.

In the same instance, the Greek work that so many Christians are familiar with, pneuma, can also mean, “wind, breath, spirit” yet in the New Testament context it is used predominately to mean “spirit” in most of its contextual uses. Again, it depends on context because it could refer to the living essence of man, or in some cases it can refer to supernatural beings, either angelic or demonic. Yet it can also and often does refer to the Spirit of God or the Holy Spirit.

However it is used in the context of what the author is writing under the influence of the Holy Spirit, it is still an invisible attribute in form or substance. Yet its effect is most obviously evident.

When Nicodemus went to Jesus under cover of night and Jesus made the statement that I quoted above from John 3:8, the very word that Jesus used to denote the Spirit of God was pneuma, which is the ordinary Greek word for “wind” or “air.”

If you remember in Genesis 2:7, after Jehovah, God formed Adam from the dust of the earth, He BREATHED into Adam and the Bible says, Adam became a living being or soul. Also, in like manner (and remember Jesus stated He and the Father were One) when the disciples were gathered together after Jesus rose from the dead, He appeared to them and the Bible says that He BREATHED on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” (John 20:22).

pd God breathed

Jesus and the Father are One and this is just another indication that His Spirit is in actuality the breath of life, His very life-giving breath!

Now I also want to remind you of the Scripture that I gave to you above from Acts 2. The disciples were all gathered together, most likely worshipping together in unity with one another and waiting as Jesus had told them too and in their midst, they heard a loud mighty sound as of a rushing wind and the Bible says it filled the WHOLE house! It didn’t just touch each one individually it touched them all indiscriminately, as a whole!

As I was sitting and praying that day and observing the wind’s effect on “my” tree. I could hear through the office window the gusts as it roared through the leaves and branches. I would imagine it was NOTHING compared to what the disciples heard in that upper room on that particular day!

It filled the WHOLE house. Think on that for a bit. It’s easy to just skim over and go on reading. The Holy Spirit, like the wind is all around us constantly. It is everywhere. It isn’t confined to just a small area here or there. The wind, even when it is still, is in the very life-giving air that we breathe! The Holy Spirit is our very life-giving breath of God, the Father!

When the air moves calmly, it can create a delightful, gentle, soothing and cooling breeze. When the Holy Spirit moves in that way, specifically as He did upon the prophets of old, there is a stirring within the heart of man. It is gentle, soothing and cooling and yet at the same time full of life-giving energy and power. The Holy Spirit is manifested or symbolized as the wind and He can come as a great rush or torrent of air that fills the hearts of believers who are waiting upon Him.

Now I want to share something with you that I read and what struck me is that it is something that most Christians (myself included) have not given much thought too. We tend to think of the Holy Spirit as our own special “gift” as it were from the Lord and yet, just like the wind and the air that we breath, the Holy Spirit is everywhere right now in the world. His power and anointing resides within His children as believers. He is who gives us the strength to persevere and to continue in this race, but His influence right now is in the world also as it was in the days of the patriarchs and prophets.

pd holy spirit everywhere

The Holy Spirit is with us.

Since the Holy Spirit is the wind of God, we must understand how the Holy Spirit functions as God’s wind (pneuma).

The metaphor of wind is used to describe the Holy Spirit because wind is felt and not seen. Wind can also be either powerful or gentle. The wind is also experienced everywhere in the world at the same time. Therefore the Holy Spirit is at work in accord with God’s desires everywhere in the world. By sending the Holy Spirit, Jesus could break the limitations of having to be in one place at one time. Now, through the work of the Holy Spirit, He is able to effect His will and presence everywhere. We never need to look for the Holy Spirit; in fact, the Holy Spirit seeks us everywhere.

Since the Holy Spirit was sent to the world and not only to the Christian, we must understand the Holy Spirit’s role in dealing with the world. Jesus said, “And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness and of judgment; of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged” – John 16:8–11. Therefore, the reason why we were convicted of our sins and desired to have Jesus Christ come into our lives as our personal savior is because the Holy Spirit was working with us. Jesus told His disciples that the Holy Spirit was with them, but in the new birth, He would be in them (John 14:17). Yet once we receive Jesus Christ as our personal Savior, we are washed by His blood and then we become ready for the Holy Spirit to move inside us.[1]

When we pray for the lost, we ask the Holy Spirit to convict (convince) of sin and to soften hearts and to open blinded eyes and deaf ears, but how often do we give credence to the fact that He truly is not just in us, but everywhere all around us! If it wasn’t for His influence upon us, convincing us of our need for Jesus, we wouldn’t have had the opportunity to accept Jesus, let alone have Christ’s Spirit dwelling, abiding within our very being! It truly gives me a greater appreciation of His work among all of us living in this temporary world.

God has graciously given us the wind of His Spirit as an anointing into His truth. One of my favorite verses is found in the Gospel of John; “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” – John 4:24.

pd spirit and truth

Which leads us to what Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes and Paul in his letter to the Corinthians:

As you do not know what is the way of the wind, Or how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child, So you do not know the works of God who makes everything. – Ecclesiastes 11:5.

But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. – 1 Corinthians 2:9-12.

Like the wind, spirit is invisible. A person cannot see it in any tangible form move or work. However, one can see the effect of what the Spirit does. God has given us the means to KNOW Him like we have never been able to before. One can see how He acts on things. Just like the wind going through my “inspiration” tree full of leaves. One cannot see the actual wind, but everyone has seen how it makes the tree’s leaves and the branches sway. Some have even witnessed a strong wind knock a nest out of a tree or rip leaves or branches off of a tree, but no one has seen the wind itself. It is the same with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit moves, either gently like a breeze or forcefully as a torrent, and we can then see people’s reactions. People react to the wind of the Spirit and they do things. Something gets accomplished. So then, like the wind, what we see is not the Holy Spirit Himself, but the Spirit’s fruit.

We carry Christ’s Spirit within us, if we have surrendered to Him. He gently moves us, cleanses us from the dust and grime of the world as He blows through our hearts. He convinces us of right living and prompts us to do Christ’s bidding.

In the time we are living today, we are starting to see His convicting influence on the world around us. Just like all of God’s creation, mankind can ignore the breezes and the blowing of the Spirit through their hearts and minds or they can recognize His movements for what they truly are. His movements can be a cooling and satisfying, refreshing breeze, or they can come down on a hardened heart like a wind storm tugging at the roots of a tree.

pd trumpet call

The Holy Spirit is alive and well and living in us and with us today. But His influence IN man will end when Christ Jesus comes back and calls us from the clouds and it will be His Spirit within us that will quicken us to meet Him in the air.

My only question; are you ready? Are you looking up expectantly? It COULD very well be at any moment!

Daily Prayer & Praise 6/22/2022

Prayer for Wednesday 6-22-2022

Lord our God, in the name of Jesus Christ, who is close at our side and in our hearts as the risen and living One, we lift our eyes to You in prayer. Bless us. Bless us through Your Word, and let our hearts become quiet in You. Free us from all restlessness and from the turmoil of the present age, for we belong to You, not to the world. We want to find the perfect peace that is in You and thus remain abiding in You. You will care for us as Your children, whom You will never forget in all eternity. Bless us and renew the riches of Your grace in us every day, for You, Oh Lord our God, remain our Father. In the name of Your Son, Jesus, we pray.

Amen.
