Christ and The Bible – John R. Rice – 4

great sermons header

main pic - john r. rice John R. Rice (December 11, 1895 – December 29, 1980) Preacher … evangelist … revivalist … editor … counselor to the thousands … friend to millions—that was Dr. John R. Rice, whose accomplishments were nothing short of miraculous. Known as “America’s Dean of Evangelists,” Dr. Rice made a mighty impact upon the nation’s religious life for some sixty years in great citywide campaigns and in Sword of the Lord conferences.

Like many other strong fighters for the faith, Rice was also marked with a sincere spirit of compassion. Those who knew him best knew a man who loved them. In preaching, in prayer and in personal life, Rice wept over sinners and with saints.

The Infallible Inspiration of the Bible

“Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” – Mark 8:38.

3. Bible Speaks With Authority of Things Otherwise Unknown

It claims to speak with authority on future events and past events that nobody but God could know. This majestic statement starts out the Bible:

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form.” – Genesis 1:1, 2.

Who could know that? God knew. He was there. Nobody else was there who could record it. The Bible is God speaking.

And future events? The Bible foretells future events with the authority as if they were present or as if they were past. Who would know those things? Nobody but God. So the Bible claims to be God speaking.

That is what inspiration means—that the Bible is breathed out from God; that holy men of old wrote as they were moved by the Holy Ghost; that the Bible is literally the Word of God; that the Bible claims perfection; that the Bible is alive, etc.

And the Bible claims to quote accurately God Himself, and the Bible speaks of past and future events with the authority that only God could have and nobody but God could know. The Bible, then, is inspired in that sense.

When we say verbal inspiration, what do we mean by “verbal”? It comes from the Latin word words are inspired.

Sometimes people say they believe in verbal inspiration, and teachers in schools and seminaries sign a statement of faith in which they say they believe in the verbal inspiration of the Bible. But some of these do not believe God gave the words. That itself is a fraud and a cheat.

There is no verbal inspiration except that God Himself gave the words, not in the English language but in the original manuscripts. As men wrote down the Bible, they wrote the very words that God told them to write. He is accountable not only for the ideas, not only for the matter, not only for the concept, but for the words in the original manuscripts as they were written down. That is verbal inspiration.

Deceit-Proofing Our Minds

thought of day header

For Sunday July 10, 2022:

DECEIT-PROOFING OUR MINDS

Colossians 2:8 (NKJV)
Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according
to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world,
and not according to Christ.

Centuries ago, when Egyptian troops first conquered Nubia, a regiment of recruits was crossing the desert. The heat was oppressive. Their supply of water was nearly exhausted. On the horizon they seemed to see a lake bordered with palm trees. The experienced Arab commander told his men that there was no lake in the distance and that what the soldiers saw was only a mirage. But the thirsty men trusted their sight more than the words of their commander. The men ran toward what they believed to be the cool waters of an oasis. Weeks later, authorities found the soldiers, all dead, far out in the desert, where they had fallen in their vain search to find water where none existed.

We are so easily deceived—particularly when we do not have a trustworthy guidebook to direct our way. Fortunately, God has provided such a guidebook in His flawless written Word, the Bible. The Scriptures truthfully reveal who God is, humankind’s greatest need, and the loving lengths to which God goes to meet that need. Our task is to read the Word and then do what it says.

Jesus loves me—this I know, for the Bible tells me so.

The Meaning of The Rapture For Everyday Life – 5

prophetic words header wp

Pastor’s Note: The following excerpt is a continuation from the article I posted last week. Like the Apostle Paul told the Thessalonians, we SHOULD be comforting one another with the Scriptural prophecies that have been given us in God’s written word. Put your trust in the eternal word!

As with any of these articles that are not mine, the credit is listed at the end of the excerpted article and all rights are reserved to the author and publisher.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-21, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.” KNJV (Bold emphasis, added).

The Rapture Has a Comforting Influence on Sorrowing Hearts

Every person has faced or will face the grief of losing a close friend or loved one in death. When death strikes, pious platitudes do little to bring lasting comfort to friends and family. The only real, lasting comfort is the hope that we will see that person again in heaven. God’s Word tells us with certainty that we are not to sorrow as people who have no hope because we will be reunited with our saved loved ones and friends at the Rapture.

Dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died.

We tell you this directly from the Lord: We who are still living when the Lord returns will not meet him ahead of those who have died. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever. So encourage each other with these words. – 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 (NLT).

The Rapture and Resurrection should transform the way we view death. Death has lost its sting. God has promised that death will ultimately be abolished and that life will reign. Grief is still appropriate when our friends or loved ones die. Jesus wept at the tomb of Lazarus (John 11:35). Stephen’s friends wept loudly over his battered body (Acts 8:2). We miss our loved ones when they die. As Tennyson put so beautifully, “O for the touch of a vanished hand / And the sound of a voice that is still.” However, the Bible declares that our weeping is not the weeping of despair. There is deep solace, hope, and comfort for our sorrowing hearts in the truth of God’s Word about the future for His children.[1]

Daily Prayer & Praise 7/08/2022

Prayer for Friday 7-8-2022

Lord our God, our Father in Heaven and on earth, we are thankful that You have in us a people to whom You can say, “You are mine.” Grant that we may continue to belong to this family. Strengthen us in the faith that we truly do belong to You, so that we can come to know Your rule and Your perfect justice. Protect us on all the paths we follow during our time on earth. Continue to lead and guide our steps that You have laid. The times are evil, but come what may, every single one of us has in his heart the certainty, “We are Yours.” You have long watched over us and kept us safe. Again and again we affirm, “We are Yours, Lord our God, through Jesus Christ our Savior.” It’s in His precious name, the name above all others that we pray.

Amen.

Just a Number For Everyone

In a recent comment published in Radar News, Willard Cantelon said that just as the barter system was superseded by money as a form of exchange, so money will be superseded by computer accounting. There is so much paperwork involved in the present forms of transactions that the banks can’t keep up.

He says that technology has brought us to the point where satellite-coordinated computer centers and memory banks will put the transactions of the whole world into one numbered system. No identity cards will be needed—just an invisible number tattooed on the hand or forehead. Transactions from any place in the world to any other place could be processed through central control in mere seconds! Money would go out of existence.

And that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. – Revelation 13:17

Matthew 13:46 – Ole Hallesby

thought of day header

For Friday July 8, 2022:

MATTHEW 13:46

Matthew 13:46 (NKJV)
“When he had found one pearl of great price,
went and sold all that he had and bought it.”

Among heathen peoples it never occurs to any one not to be religious. It is as much a matter of course to share in the religious life of the people as it is to accept their other customs and habits.

Not until Christianity begins to affect the old religion of a people do we note any change.

However, if Christianity becomes the prevailing religion of a people, we observe the very remarkable thing that most of the people within the nation do not share in the religion of their people.

The reason for this is given us in this parable about the pearl.

The Christian religion makes demands that are unknown to other religions. It is a pearl of so great a price that most people give up owning it personally. Whereupon they proceed to provide themselves with imitations or to live entirely without the pearl of life.

We are told here how costly it is.

They had to sell all they had in order to come into possession of the pearl. This is a tremendous act of daring. Many conclude, therefore, that it is less hazardous to do without the pearl, for then they can keep what they already have.

But does it cost so much to become a Christian?

Do we not enter into the kingdom of God gratis? Is not the grace of God free? Can we not receive it without money and without price?

Yes, that is quite true. We need not pay anything to be saved. But there are things we must sell.

God does not need to receive anything from us in order to save us. But there are things He must persuade us to surrender. “If thy hand cause thee to stumble, cut it off.”

“Those who do not renounce all that they have cannot be my disciples,” Jesus says.

Reflecting With God 7/09/2022

reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

All Scriptures Used are NKJV, New King James Version

For Friday July 9, 2022:

He touched the socket of his hip . . . And He said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel.” – Genesis 32:25, 28.

In the ancient times, a box on the ear given by a master to a slave meant liberty: little would the freedman care how hard was the blow. By a stroke from the sword the warrior was knighted by his monarch: small matter was it to the new-made knight if the hand was heavy. When the Lord intends to lift His servants into a higher stage of spiritual life, He frequently sends them a severe trial; He makes His Jacobs to be prevailing princes, but He confers the honor after a night of wrestling, and accompanies it with a shrunken sinew. Be it so: who among us would wish to be deprived of the trials, if they are the necessary attendants of spiritual advancement?

Daily Prayer & Praise 7/07/2022

Prayer for Thursday 7-7-2022

Lord our God, we thank You for all You have done for us, for all You are continuing to do for us, for deliverance from need and death. We thank You for all the signs You give us that You hear our prayers when, without wavering or weakening, we set our hopes on You. We thank You that we can be without fear of sin and death, for You stand by us in everything and You have removed that burden of fear from us. In spite of our imperfections You show us Your goodness again and again. May the light in our hearts reflecting Christ Jesus never be extinguished, the light that enables us to look into Heaven and earth and see the good that is on its way to us today. May the strength of Your joy remain with us, and may we have the strength to be a community that follows the paths of life which bring praise, glory and honor to You. In the mighty name of Jesus, our Lord and King, we pray.

Amen.

The Guillotine

Records show that the last person to be publicly guillotined in France was the murderer Weidmann in 1939. Bible revelation shows that this form of capital punishment will be revived when Antichrist sets up his world kingdom at the Great Tribulation.

And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. – Revelation 20:4

All Noble Things Are Difficult – Oswald Chambers

thought of day header

For Thursday July 7, 2022:

ALL NOBLE THINGS ARE DIFFICULT

Matthew 7:13-14 (NKJV)
“Enter by the narrow gate . . . Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way . . .”

If we are going to live as disciples of Jesus, we have to remember that all noble things are difficult. The Christian life is gloriously difficult, but the difficulty of it does not make us faint and cave in, it rouses us up to overcome. Do we so appreciate the marvelous salvation of Jesus Christ that we are our utmost for His highest?

God saves men by His sovereign grace through the Atonement of Jesus; He works in us to will and to do of His good pleasure; but we have to work out that salvation in practical living. If once we start on the basis of His Redemption to do what He commands, we find that we can do it. If we fail, it is because we have not practiced. The crisis will reveal whether we have been practicing or not. If we obey the Spirit of God and practice in our physical life what God has put in us by His Spirit, then when the crisis comes, we shall find that our own nature as well as the grace of God will stand by us.

Thank God He does give us difficult things to do! His salvation is a glad thing, but it is also a heroic, holy thing. It tests us for all we are worth. Jesus is bringing many “sons unto glory,” and God will not shield us from the requirements of a son. God’s grace turns out men and women with a strong family likeness to Jesus Christ, not milksops. It takes a tremendous amount of discipline to live the noble life of a disciple of Jesus in actual things. It is always necessary to make an effort to be noble.

Daily Prayer & Praise 7/06/2022

Prayer for Wednesday 7-6-2022

Dear Father in Heaven, open our hearts to the wonder of being able to call You Father, the wonder of being united with You and how awesome that blessing is. You are the source of all life and strength. In You is redemption, and we need to be redeemed before we can live rightly. Take from us the pressures forced on us by the flood of events in the world around us. Make us completely free as people led by Your powerful and sovereign might, people who may be joyful because everything will be overcome through the power You grant us in Jesus Christ. Protect us from fear, doubt and from all forms of evil. Show more and more clearly Your good and wonderful goal for all peoples and nations on earth, so that in expectation they may find happiness even in all the stress of today. For the glory and the honor, we ask these requests in Jesus’ name!

Amen.

Kroger Profits From Volume

Seventy-five years ago a young grocery clerk had $372 and an idea. He founded a little store on the Cincinnati riverfront. Today that one store has grown into a system operating some 2,000 stores in 19 midwestern and southern states. His name was Bernard H. Kroger.

He helped foster a merchandising revolution based on the premise that if a large enough volume of goods could be sold at a very small unit profit, a satisfactory total profit would be earned.

“Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot . . . they bought, they sold . . .” – Luke 17:28

Song of Solomon 7:10 – A.B. Simpson

thought of day header

For Wednesday July 6, 2022:

SONG OF SOLOMON 7:10

Song of Solomon 7:10 (NKJV)
I am my beloved’s.

If you want power you must compress. It is the shutting in of the steam that moves the engine. The amount of powder on a flat surface that sends a ball to its destination when shut up in a gun only makes a flash. If you want to carry the electric current you must be insulated. Stand a man on a glass platform and turn a battery on him and he will be filled with electricity. Let him step off the glass, and the moment he touches earth he loses power.

We must be enclosed by His everlasting Covenant. That holds us and keeps us from falling. He will be a wall of fire round about us. He comes Himself and envelops us round about with the old Shekinah glory, and will be the glory in the midst. He wants us enclosed—by a distinct act of consecration dedicated wholly to Him. Are you enclosed by His fences, His commandments, His promises, His covenant? Is your heart really and only for the Lord?

If not, come to Him now and let Him separate you from all the things that take your life, and let Him separate you unto Himself, the Life Giver.

Our feeble encampment may lie open to assault, and we be all unfit to guard it, but the other camp is there too, and our enemies must force their way through it before they get at us.

Daily Prayer & Praise 7/05/2022

Prayer for Tuesday 7-5-2022

Lord our God, we thank You for the great calling You have given us. We thank You that in all the evils of today’s world You have given us the hope and faith that You are leading us to a goal that is good and perfect and You alone make us free. You make Your children free so that throughout humankind a new spirit may come, a new life and a new power to serve You in time and in eternity. Praise to Your name that we can always have hope; nothing can discourage us, but everything must work together for good in accordance with Your great purpose. Grant that Your compassion may come to all the world, to all peoples, whom You have looked upon with mercy in sending Jesus Christ as Savior, for we know that You truly desire none to perish. In the name of Christ Jesus, our Savior and Redeemer, we ask these things.

Amen.

Not Built In a Day

It took years to build the Taj Mahal, the greatest mausoleum on earth. Twenty thousand men worked on it.

It took seven-and-one-half years to build Solomon’s Temple. And one hundred and eighty-three thousand six hundred men worked on it.

It took seventy-six years to build the great Pyramid of Egypt.

It took many years to build Verdum into a fortress. This city-fortress the Crown Prince strove in vain to carry by storm during the World War. He marched his men in solid mass, shoulder-to-shoulder, and eight hundred thousand died. But the fortress-city was never taken.

“Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot . . . they built.” – Luke 17:28
