How Often Should I Forgive? – 2

pastor's desk header

*Pastor’s Note: This is a continuation of an article adapted from Cecil E. Sherman’s Formation Commentary on Matthew. There are a couple of things that I have not kept in the post, things that will NOT change the flow of the message in the least. Also I changed the Scripture verses to the New King James Version.

It will be broken up into four parts throughout this week. Also, any images displayed are not part of the original, but put in as part of my posting. My prayer is that you will be blessed, inspired and encouraged by this to move forward towards Christ Jesus in strength!

A Formula For Making Wrongs Right

“Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.”

“Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

“Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” – Matthew 18:15-20.

“If your brother sins against you,” what do you do? Jesus recommended the following:

  1. In private, go to the offending party. State the problem. “Go and show him his fault, just between the two of you.” Hopefully, this will have a happy effect. The offending party may see the problem, be sorry for the pain, and promise to make wrongs right. If this happens, you have not only corrected “the fault,” you have “won your brother over.” The fellowship of the congregation is kept intact while holy living is enlarged.
  2. Suppose step one fails. What then? Get “one or two others” to go with you. Make a second visit. Discuss the “fault” in the presence of witnesses. Hopefully, this enlarged company will accomplish what a private visit did not. Again, the goal is an end to disruptive conduct and a restoration of Christian fellowship.
  3. “If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church.” Note the unwritten assumption. The congregation is the final authority for determining right and wrong for the membership: “If he refuses to listen even to the church.” When we come into church membership, we give ourselves over to the discipline of the congregation. This is not often spoken in today’s church. We come in, but we reserve the right to “do our own thing.” The early church did not know such individualism and would have had no part in it. Be careful to read the text. The member does not submit to the authority of the Pastor alone; it is the congregation as a whole that has the power to correct, censor, or discipline.
  4. The congregation can exclude the member who will not allow forgiveness to happen. “Treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector.” This is hard for us to hear. We can recount the times Jesus welcomed Gentiles and tax collectors. But there is a difference. The tax collectors Jesus gathered to faith were eager to change and open to the gospel. The Gentiles welcomed to faith were ready to change sinful lives. We are dealing with stubborn, unrepentant folks here. Real church has never been an “anything goes” company. When we make it so, we are not biblical. We are soft-headed, calling it forgiveness.
  5. “I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” This is the right setting for “binding and loosing.” Jesus is stating it is not Peter alone or in the case of the church, the Pastor alone who binds and looses; it is the congregation as a whole. And when the Bible is opened, and when the Spirit is called for a helper, and when earnest, caring Christians think and pray, then the will of God can be done in a hard situation with a difficult member.
  6. And Jesus will be present when the sorting out is done. “For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” This puts the heartwarming assurance of Jesus in proper setting. He is with the people of God when they are forced to deal with an unrepentant member of the congregation, when forgiveness can’t come because the member will not let it.

Daily Prayer & Praise 7/13/2022

Prayer for Wednesday 7-13-2022

Lord our mighty God, look upon us in our weakness, for You call us Your children and give us of Your Holy Spirit. From Your fullness we constantly need to receive strength for the struggle ahead of us in this life. Grant that Your unfailing light may come wherever darkness still reigns, especially where it is so black that we do not know which way to turn. Hear our prayer for all people, and let Your justice and Your truth alone be victorious. Let all Your chosen receive what You have promised them, and let them realize that no matter what happens, they remain Your anointed children. In the name of Christ Jesus.

Amen.

Why Rome Fell

In The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, completed in 1787, Edward Gibbon lists the following reasons for that fall:

1. The rapid increase of divorce; the undermining of dignity and sanctity of the home, which is the basis of human society.

2. Higher and higher taxes and the spending of public money for free bread and circuses for the populace.

3. The mad craze for pleasure; sports becoming every year more exciting and more brutal.

4. The building of gigantic armaments when the real enemy was within: the decadence of the people.

5. The decay of religion—faith fading into mere form—losing touch with life and becoming impotent to guide the people.

Do these five reasons for the fall of Rome tell us anything about our present national situation?

But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. – 2 Timothy 3:1-5

Romans 15:3 – A.B. Simpson

thought of day header

For Wednesday July 13, 2022:

ROMANS 15:3

Romans 15:3 (NKJV)
For even Christ did not please Himself.

Let this be a day of self-forgetting ministry for Christ and others. Let us not once think of being ministered unto, but say ever with Him: “I am among you as He that doth serve.” Let us not drag our burdens through the day, but drop all our loads of care and be free to carry His yoke and His burden. Let us make the happy exchange, giving ours and taking His. Let the covenant be: “Thou shalt abide for Me, I also for thee.” So shall we lose our heaviest load—ourselves—and so shall we find our highest joy, divine love, the more blessed “to give” than “to receive.” Let us do good to all men as we have opportunity. Let us lose no opportunity of blessing, and let us study ingenious ways of service and usefulness. Especially let us seek to win souls.

The Days of Heaven are busy days,
   They serve continually,
So spent for Thee and Thine, our days,
As the Days of Heaven would be.

The Days of Heaven are loving days,
   As one they all agree,
So linked in loving unity
May our days as Heaven be.

How Often Should I Forgive? – 1

pastor's desk header

*Pastor’s Note: So many people have such a hard time with forgiveness today and especially as we see such blatant evil starting to come out of the darkness. Yet, as a chosen people, as followers of Jesus Christ, forgiveness is a command that has its personal rewards and it is for the benefit of the individual disciple as well as the Body of Christ, the True Church of brothers and sisters.

I am posting an article adapted from Cecil E.

Introduction

Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” – Matthew 18:21

How often should I forgive? The answer is simple. Jesus said to forgive without limit. “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.” (v. 22). But if you read verses 15–35, you will get a larger picture—and a more complex one. I will address the real question the early church was facing and a question that still troubles the church today.

The people who made up the early church were not all saints or heroes. They were not all apostles, nor were they clones of the apostle Paul. They were just people. And because they were just people, saved by grace but still flesh and blood like you and me, they did not always get along. Members of the Christian community sinned. Sometimes when these people sinned, they were not repentant. They just kept on sinning. Sometimes the sins broke fellowship and hurt folks, and no effort at reconciliation or restoration would amend bad conduct. What then? Now we are beginning to see the problem that prompted Peter’s question, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him?”

One way the modern church deals with sin in the membership is to offer forgiveness automatically. We just don’t deal with church discipline anymore. You can’t find a self-respecting church that will discipline a member for anything. An alcoholic can refuse to take responsibility for their life; we forgive. A minister can take advantage of his office and commit sexual sin while doing pastoral counseling; we forgive. A husband can abuse his wife; we turn away. A child can beg for her parents’ love and time and get nothing; we overlook the plea. On and on this sort of turning away from church discipline goes.

Refusing to deal with sin in the congregation under the guise of quick forgiveness is not church. It is flight from the kind of life that should be present in the congregation. We are called to care for each other. We are called to high living. We are called to model relationships that attract to the faith. So we have to deal with sin in the house. Peter’s question must be asked by the modern church. What do we do with people who don’t meet the standard?

Simple Preaching of Brainerd

David Brainerd, the famous missionary to the American Indians, proclaimed this truth throughout his ministry. He said, “I never got away from Jesus and Him crucified in my preaching. I found that once these people were gripped by the great evangelical meaning of Christ’s sacrifice on our behalf, I did not have to give them many instructions about changing their behavior.”

When Charles Spurgeon lay on his deathbed, he testified to a friend, “My theology now is found in four little words: “JESUS died for ME.” I don’t say this is all I would preach if I were to be raised up again, but it is more than enough for me to die upon.”

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. – Revelation 12:11

A Simple Sermon For Seeking Souls – C.H. Spurgeon

thought of day header

For Tuesday July 12, 2022:

A SIMPLE SERMON FOR SEEKING SOULS

Romans 10:13 (NKJV)
For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”

“I thought,” said somebody addressing me one day, “I thought when I was in the garden, surely Christ could take my sins away, just as easily as he could move the clouds. Do you know, sir, in a moment or two the cloud was all gone, and the sun was shining. Thought I to myself, the Lord is blotting out my sin.” Such a ridiculous thought as that, you say, cannot occur often. I tell you, it does, very frequently indeed. People suppose that the greatest nonsense in all the earth is a manifestation of divine grace in their hearts. Now, the only feeling I ever want to have is just this,—I want to feel that I am a sinner and that Christ is my Saviour. You may keep your visions, and ecstasies, and raptures, and dances to yourselves; the only feeling that I desire to have is deep repentance and humble faith; and if, poor sinner, you have got that, you are saved. Why, some of you believe that before you can be saved there must be a kind of electric shock, some very wonderful thing that is to go all through you from head to foot. Now hear this, “The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: … That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart.… Thou shalt be saved.” What do you want with all this nonsense of dreams and supernatural thoughts? All that is wanted is, that as a guilty sinner, I should come and cast myself on Christ. That done, the soul is safe, and all the visions in the universe could not make it safer.

Obedient Child Recovers Better

Years ago a famous children’s specialist said to me: “When it comes to a serious illness, the child who has been taught to obey stands four times the chance of recovery that the spoiled and undisciplined child does.” Those words made a lasting impression upon me. Up to that time I had been taught that one of the Ten Commandments was for children to obey their parents. Never had it entered my mind that a question of obedience might mean the saving or losing of a child’s life. – J. Adam Clark

Do not withhold correction from a child, For if you beat him with a rod, he will not die. You shall beat him with a rod, And deliver his soul from hell. – Proverbs 23:13-14

No Compromise of Deity – A.W. Tozer

thought of day header

For Monday July 11, 2022:

NO COMPROMISE OF DEITY

Philippians 2:9 (NKJV)
Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him
the name which is above every name.

We can surely know this, at least: that the Incarnation required no compromise of deity. Let us always remember that when God became incarnate there was no compromise on God’s part. . . .
But the holy God who is God, and all else not God, our Father who art in heaven, could never compromise Himself. The Incarnation, the Word made flesh, was accomplished without any compromise of the holy Deity.

The living God did not degrade Himself by this condescension. He did not in any sense make Himself to be less than God.

He remained ever God and everything else remained not God. The gulf still existed even after Jesus Christ had become man and had dwelt among us. Instead of God degrading Himself when He became man, by the act of Incarnation He elevated mankind to Himself. . . .

Thus, we do not degrade God but we elevate man—and that is the wonder of redemption!

Philemon Verses 21-25

Philemon 1:21-25, Having confidence in your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say. But, meanwhile, also prepare a guest room for me, for I trust that through your prayers I shall be granted to you. Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, greets you, as do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, Luke, my fellow laborers. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

Twenty five verses in all as those that enumerated the text in later times added them for ease of reading. Such a short letter or Epistle and yet so full of important and practical life-giving theology and doctrine!

We have now come to the conclusion of the Apostle’s letter to his dear friend Philemon. One thing stands out very clearly and that is the fact that Paul didn’t just preach and teach the example and words of Christ Jesus, he LIVED them. What an awesome example to the disciples of his day and to each and every disciple of Jesus Christ’s since then!

This was from the same Apostle that wrote the following to the Corinthian church:

Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God, just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved. – 1 Corinthians 10:32-33.

Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ. – 1 Corinthians 11:1. (Emphasis added).

When you study the Word of God, it’s clear that this statement is not the beginning of a new paragraph or even a new chapter as some versions have delineated it, but rather finishing off a paragraph and thought. In essence, the Scripture should be read in this regard:

Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God, just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved. Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.

The Apostle Paul, as I stated above, LIVED his words as an example to all and thus is the perfect example to all of us who wish to follow after Christ Jesus in word AND deed! But I digress.

et trust and hope

Paul sums up the previous body of his letter with the words of confidence that he penned in verse 21. His confidence most likely originated not so much in his own perceived authority but rather in his intimate knowledge of Philemon’s character that the Apostle already mentioned and the knowledge Paul had of Philemon’s commitment to the actual gospel or Good News of Christ Jesus’ saving power. So, though the Apostle’s letter was filled with appeal, it was also filled with great hope.

Paul does end with a bit more firmness and strength at the ending than he displayed during the main body of the letter when he stated that he had “confidence in your obedience.” The confidence we addressed but though Paul had been actually pleading on behalf of Onesimus, he now ends with a statement to Philemon’s obedience in the Apostle’s plea. Again, presumably it was because Paul was intimate in the knowledge of Philemon’s devotion to the cause of Christ and to the ways of the then blossoming Christianity.

Paul ends that statement with the continued confidence that he is certain (to the point of knowing) that Philemon will do even more than what Paul has asked of him. There’s a lot of speculation of what the more could mean, but it is never fully addressed and the key to the statement is Paul’s knowledge of his friend and brother-in-Christ’s true heart motivation. Paul may have been making some subtle hints as to Onesimus’ continued welfare, release or even being sent back to the Apostle, but the fact remains is that he knows, he discerns the heart of his friend Philemon and has EVERY confidence in him doing whatever is right in the Lord.

Without speaking it, the whole letter leads to the fact AND truth that Philemon had been freely forgiven by Christ (as he was now learning Onesimus was also), and so as a brother-in-Christ, Philemon could do no less for his servant. In fact overall, we have a perfect example given of what Paul had written to the Ephesians:

And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you. – Ephesians 4:32.

et ephesians 4_32

The Apostle in this next verse seems then to have concluded his appeal to Philemon on behalf of Onesimus and yet if you were to stick to that conclusion you would probably be mistaken. Again, I have to say, that you can see the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and the spiritual wisdom that had been anointing Paul. The Apostle then appeared to request something of a personal nature. Something for himself. “Meanwhile, also prepare a guest room for me.” Seems simple and fair enough of a request. Paul and Philemon were not just partners in spreading the gospel but were close friends.

But, consider this; the prospect of a visit from his friend, the friend who was making such a passioned plea on behalf of Onesimus, was hoping to make an appearance if everyone’s prayers were answered and he was allowed to go free. It would be an opportunity for the Apostle to see how Onesimus was welcomed back, and it could also be one of the first tasks assigned to Onesimus upon his return; preparing the guest room for his friend, brother and mentor. We don’t really know if the Apostle did make it there or not, but it would not be a far-fetched assumption to believe that the guest room was ready and waiting.

One other thing needs to be recognized as well. The Apostle knew that others were praying for his release and most likely he was very well aware of Philemon’s and his household’s prayers for him for he didn’t ask for prayers but rather stated he believed their prayers that they were already putting before the Lord would be answered soon and he would be released from civil authority. Paul’s faith and confidence in not just the Lord’s ability to have him released, but in the effectiveness of corporate prayer was a solid foundation of his faith.

As Paul has done with just about every one of his Epistles, he always acknowledges and lists those who are with him and the help they give. He does the same thing here even though this is a personal letter and I believe he does it because he is acknowledging to Philemon that other of his brothers-in-Christ are helping in a practical way to the ministry as well as to Paul personally. This would accomplish as least one thing in easing Philemon’s mind in the sense that he would know Paul is not totally alone in his trials. Also, Paul did begin the letter addressed not just to Philemon, though as head of the house he was the main recipient, but also to Philemon’s wife and son AND lest we forget, to the church meeting in his house. I see Paul more or less leaving it in Philemon’s hands as to how much he wants to share the letter and so acknowledging their fellow workers is something Paul continues to do.

et grace of Christ

The Apostle Paul was very consistent in the conclusion of ALL of the 13 epistles that he wrote or sent out. He pretty much ended each with the short benediction that is common to him:

“The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.”

What is interesting to note also in this (and I would have passed right over it), is the fact that the word “your” in reference to spirit is a plural of the word and not singular. In other words, when you consider its significance, again we see even though it is a personal letter to Philemon as head of his home, it was addressed to others within the home and those who meet in the home. So Paul, in his closing benediction is NOT just giving a blessing to Philemon, but by including the plural “your,” he is giving the blessing to all who are influenced by this letter.

When you consider it, when you give it thought and study, Paul isn’t blessing them with the grace they already walk in concerning their salvation, for he already is writing to them as those already walking in Christ Jesus. Rather he is giving them a blessing for their continued, day to day walk with the Lord. May the Lord’s grace be with each and every one of you in your spirit! What a gracious way, again an example of the Lord’s dealings with His children, for the Apostle to also end his letter!

In one of the commentary’s I used to study I found this statement and there is no way I can say it any better:

Life can hold no greater blessing than the unmerited favor of the Savior as one’s moment-by-moment experience. To walk in the constant realization and enjoyment of His Person and work is all that heart can desire.[1]

I can just imagine Paul, holding his pen, looking over his letter, maybe with a sigh and a heartfelt prayer, then laying his pen aside, rolling up the parchment and handing it to his friends to deliver it to Philemon. I truly don’t believe that the Apostle could have realized the extent to which the message of this letter would influence other Christians throughout the ages to follow. What a perfect and beautiful example of a faith put to words, but also in deed as one who follows after the Lord Jesus.

et pauls letters

Through the years of being in ministry I have seen so many who claim to be Christians, discount the writings and teachings of Paul and saying all he was doing was trying to gather disciples to himself. I am always amazed and I STILL see some pop up on social media platforms stating they ONLY follow the words of Jesus and no one else.

You CANNOT study the Bible as a whole and NOT see the Spirit of Christ, the Living Word and His Holy Spirit’s anointing in the words of the authors but also in the lives AND the examples they put down for all of posterity. Those that can’t see it have NOT taken the Word into their hearts. They may have read the Bible and its individual books like some great historical work, but then they have lost the truly life-changing aspect of it.

I just recently read and posted a quote from a great Preacher from the past, Rodney “Gipsy” Smith, and the quote is truly fitting for closing this lesson on the importance of truly DIGGING into the Word of God:

What makes the difference is not how many times you have been through the Bible, but how many times and how thoroughly the Bible has been through you.

Something very serious to consider. In closing, I am going to quote the Apostle Paul and though I am no Paul to be sure, this is every bit as much of my prayer for those who read these lessons or at least does a study of their own on Philemon!

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

Grant That I May Come to the Fountain of All Wisdom

prayer and praise header 3
Venerable Bede, Prayer for Sunday 7-10-2022

I ask you, good Jesus, that as you have graciously granted me sweetly to partake of the words of your wisdom and knowledge, you will also grant that I may some time come to you the fountain of all wisdom, and always appear before your face, who lives and reigns, world without end.

Amen.

Centuries of Meditations – First Century 5-6

devotionals header

Thomas Traherne ( 1637 – September 27, 1674) was an English poet, Anglican cleric, theologian, and religious writer. Traherne’s writings frequently explore the glory of creation and what he saw as his intimate relationship with God. His writing conveys an ardent, almost childlike love of God, and is compared to similar themes in the works of later poets William Blake, Walt Whitman, and Gerard Manley Hopkins. His love for the natural world is frequently expressed in his works.

The work for which Traherne is best known today is the Centuries of Meditations, a collection of short paragraphs in which he reflects on Christian life and ministry, philosophy, happiness, desire and childhood. This was first published in 1908 after having been rediscovered in manuscript ten years earlier. Before its rediscovery this manuscript was said to have been lost for almost two hundred years and is now considered a much loved devotional.

THE FIRST CENTURY

5

The fellowship of the mystery that hath been hid in God since the creation is not only the contemplation of His Love in the work of redemption, tho’ that is wonderful, but the end for which we are redeemed; a communion with Him in all His Glory. For which cause St. Peter saith The God of all Grace hath called us unto His Eternal Glory by Jesus Christ. His Eternal Glory by the methods of His Divine Wisdom being made ours; and our fruition of it the end for which our Saviour suffered.

6

True Love as it intendeth the greatest gifts intendeth also the greatest benefits. It contenteth not itself in showing great things unless it can make them greatly useful. For Love greatly delighteth in seeing its object continually seated in the highest happiness. Unless therefore I could advance you higher by the uses of what I give, my Love could not be satisfied in giving you the whole world. But because when you enjoy it you are advanced to the Throne of God and may see His Love; I rest well pleased in bestowing it. It will make you to see your own greatness, the truth of the Scriptures, the amiableness of Virtue, and the beauty of Religion. It will enable you also to contemn the world, and to overflow with praises.

Present – Bad For Future

anecdotal stories

“I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and kings will come forth from you. I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you. I will give to you and to your descendants after you, the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.” – Genesis 17:6-8.

And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. – 1 John 3:3.

Too Late To Change

For all the good Otto von Bismarck accomplished in uniting Germany, his rule was marked by a conspicuous failure. He brought absolutism, not democracy, to the German people. His twenty-seven year autocratic rule led to Kaiser Wilhelm; then, after World War I, to an ineffectual Weimer republic that had no basis in German history. After that it led to Hitler. Before he died, Bismarck said that even good kings can be bad if they hold uncontested power. Unfortunately, it was too late to remake Germany.

God has established an unfailingly complete sufficiency for us in Christianity. It has a benevolent, all sovereign Lord. It provides the perfect sacrifice for sin and an infallible guide for principles of good behavior in each generation. It consists of a forgiven constituency of saints who complete God’s mission in each generation. It promises a righteous, eternal kingdom ruled by almighty God and inhabited by forgiven, perfected saints.

The future that we study and plan for begins today. – Fischer

Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree. – Luther

Our cares we can cast on Thee, for Thou carest for us.  How can we be troubled about the future road, since it belongs to Thee?  How can we be troubled where it leads, since it finally but leads us to Thee. – John Henry Neuman
