Daily Prayer & Praise 7/29/2022

Prayer for Friday 7-29-2022

Lord our God, we thank You for the love You show us so that we may be delivered from weakness and sickness, from sin and misery, and may be given strength to serve You, our Almighty and Heavenly Father. Bless us in all we have on our hearts, that through Your mercy the battle of life may be fought righteously. Bless us in our times and grant that justice may gain the upper hand and we may live in peace, praising You into all eternity. Protect us, Your children, forevermore. May Your name be honored, may Your kingdom come, and may Your will be continually done on earth as it is in Heaven. To Your glory and in the name above every other name, Jesus Christ we pray.

Amen.

Solomon As The Better Judge

When William Jennings Bryan went to call on the father of his prospective wife and seek the hand of his daughter in marriage, knowing the strong religious feeling of the father, he thought to strengthen his case by a quotation from the Bible, and quoted the proverb of Solomon: “He who finds a wife finds a good thing.” (Proverbs 18:22).

But to his surprise the father replied with a citation from Paul to the effect that he that marries does well, but he that doesn’t marry does better. The young suitor was for a moment confounded. Then with a happy inspiration he replied that Paul had no wife and Solomon had seven hundred, and Solomon, therefore, ought to be the better judge as to marriage.

“Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?” – Matthew 19:4-5

2 Corinthians 1:4 – Ole Hallesby

thought of day header

For Friday July 29, 2022:

2 CORINTHIANS 1:4

2 Corinthians 1:4 (NKJV)
Who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort
those who are in any trouble, with the comfort
with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

The apostle here mentions one aspect of the blessing which our sufferings bring to others. We have afflictions in order that we may be able to comfort those who are in affliction of any kind.

Unquestionably the apostle is thinking of profound and sacred experiences in his own life. In the eleventh chapter of our epistle he tells us a little of what he has suffered for Christ’s sake. It is terrible indeed; but he also reminds us, in our verse today, of the abundant comfort which he received from God in these terrible afflictions. We need think only of Paul and Silas in prison at Philippi with their feet fastened to the stocks. God comforted them in such a way that they sang songs of praise. The apostle knew now that the comfort which he received enabled him to comfort others.

Child of God, this is for you—you who have so many tribulations and afflictions. You are not disturbed so much by the fact that you suffer as you are by the fact that your sufferings seem to you to be so devoid of meaning. The apostle here tells you that you are being trained by God to comfort other sufferers. You cannot comfort others with any other comfort than that with which God has been able to comfort you. You remember, no doubt, how blessed it was when you met some one who had gone through the same sufferings that you had and had been comforted by God.

Remember that you who have suffered and have been comforted of God are privileged to comfort more people than you know. Not only by speaking with suffering people directly. Only a few will speak to you about their sufferings. However, all people suffer. And they need comfort. And hunger for comfort. And it has been so ordained that there is something unspeakable about a person who has suffered a great deal, but who has also been abundantly comforted of God, something which is of great comfort and help to all suffering souls.

Reflecting With God 7/29/2022

reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

All Scriptures Used are NKJV, New King James Version

For Friday July 29, 2022:

The pillar of cloud went from before them and stood behind them. – Exodus 14:19.

“It was a cloud and darkness” to the Egyptians, but “it gave light by night” to Israel. How like the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ! Truly that cross has a double aspect, likewise. It forms the foundation of the believer’s peace; and, at the same time, seals the condemnation of the guilty world. The self-same blood which purges the believer’s conscience and gives him perfect peace, stains this earth and consummates its guilt. The very mission of the Son of God which strips the world of its cloak, and leaves it wholly without excuse, clothes the Church with a fair mantle of righteousness, and fills her mouth with ceaseless praise. The very same Lamb who will terrify, by His unmitigated wrath, all tribes and classes of earth, will lead, by His gentle hand, His blood-bought flock, through the green pastures, and beside the still waters forever.

Daily Prayer & Praise 7/28/2022

Prayer for Thursday 7-28-2022

Lord our God, we come into Your presence, pleading with You to bring the world what it needs, so that people may be freed from all their pain and enabled to serve You. Let the power of Jesus Christ be revealed in our time. For He has taken on our sin that justice might arise on earth, that all might have life and might see the salvation You have provided, which You will bring when the time is fulfilled. Let Your power be revealed in the world, and let Your will be done, Your name be kept holy, and all wrongs be righted in this turbulent and difficult age. Oh Lord our God, You alone have the power to help. You alone are the Savior of all peoples. In Your great mercy You can bring peace to the hearts of people. We look to You. And when we consider Your Word, we remember the mighty promises You have given, promises which have been fulfilled and promises which are to be fulfilled in our time. With all praise, glory and honor we ask these things in Jesus’ name.

Amen.

Unruffled By Bandit

Foster Walker accidentally strolled into the scene of a holdup at a store in Memphis, Tenn., and heard the gunman order him to surrender his money or “I’ll shoot you.”

“You just go ahead and shoot,” Walker said. “I just got through reading my Bible, and I’ve already said my prayers.”

The robber was dumbfounded and Walker, a man in his sixties, walked away.

“And I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.” – Luke 12:4

After Obedience – What? – Oswald Chambers

thought of day header

For Thursday July 28, 2022:

AFTER OBEDIENCE – WHAT?

Mark 6:45-52 (NKJV)
Immediately He made His disciples get into the boat
and go before Him to the other side. . .

We are apt to imagine that if Jesus Christ constrains us, and we obey Him, He will lead us to great success. We must never put our dreams of success as God’s purpose for us; His purpose may be exactly the opposite. We have an idea that God is leading us to a particular end, a desired goal; He is not. The question of getting to a particular end is a mere incident. What we call the process, God calls the end.

What is my dream of God’s purpose? His purpose is that I depend on Him and on His power now. If I can stay in the middle of the turmoil calm and unperplexed, that is the end of the purpose of God. God is not working towards a particular finish; His end is the process—that I see Him walking on the waves, no shore in sight, no success, no goal, just the absolute certainty that it is all right because I see Him walking on the sea. It is the process, not the end, which is glorifying to God.

God’s training is for now, not presently. His purpose is for this minute, not for something in the future. We have nothing to do with the afterwards of obedience; we get wrong when we think of the afterwards. What men call training and preparation, God calls the end.

God’s end is to enable me to see that He can walk on the chaos of my life just now. If we have a further end in view, we do not pay sufficient attention to the immediate present; but if we realize that obedience is the end, then each moment as it comes is precious.

For Thursday July 28, 2022:

“Speak to the children of Israel, that they turn and camp . . . between Migdol and the sea, opposite Baal Zephon.” – Exodus 14:2.

Often God seems to place His children in positions of profound difficulty—leading them into a wedge from which there is no escape; contriving a situation which no human judgment would have permitted had it been previously consulted. The very cloud conducts them thither. You may be thus involved at this very hour. It does seem perplexing and mysterious to the last degree. But it is perfectly right. The issue will more than justify Him Who has brought you hither. It is a platform for the display of His almighty grace and power. He will not only deliver you, but in doing so He will give you a lesson that you will never forget; and to which, in many a psalm and song in after days, you will revert.

All You Weary Ones

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30.

As so many of you know, the world is no place to find rest. In actuality, the world compels and tells mankind to hurry, don’t stop, keep going if you want to be a success. So many things the world promises to offer a person is in total contrast to the truth of the Word of God and what is found in the Lord, Himself.

In Matthew, we see recorded the very words AND promises of our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ concerning the rest that He offers as compared to what the world says it can offer.

pd matthew 11_28

The source of the Christian doctrine of rest is the rest of God Himself, who, after completing the work of Creation in six days, “rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done.” – Genesis 2:2. The Biblical concept of rest is not however, just based in the past Creation, or even in our present weekly observances but also it is based in future promises of eternal rest. Maybe not so much as a cessation from activity, for I believe in Heaven we will be very busy, but rather we will be at eternal rest from all strife!

It is God’s rest into which all persons are encouraged to enter. The weekly day of rest is a reminder and a reflection of that rest that is promised through Jesus Christ. The rest that Christ gives to those who come to Him as described in the Scripture above is a foretaste and a guarantee of the divine rest that awaits all those who believe in and have surrendered to Christ Jesus. The rest after death of believers who have gone on in Christ is a blissful intensification of the reality of this experience: “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord . . . They may rest from their labors.” – Revelation 14:13. But the completion of this rest in its inexpressible fullness will take place at the return of Christ, when at last all who are His will be fully conformed to His likeness (1 John 3:2). Salvation will be consummated as His redeemed are clothed with imperishable, glorified bodies (2 Corinthians 5), and the renewed order of creation in which righteousness dwells will be established (2 Peter 3:13).

The completion of the redemption purchased by Christ on the cross will mean rest and freedom from all sin, and this in turn will mean rest and freedom from all sorrow, pain, suffering, persecution, frustration, injustice, and death (Revelation 7:9–17; 21:1–7). The rest of mankind also after Jesus’ return will involve the rest of God’s whole creation as it is brought to the perfection of that glorious destiny for which it was intended from the very beginning (see for reference Romans 8:19–25).

However, and keep this in mind, rest is not synonymous with inactivity. What God rested from was the work of Creation. He continues however, to be constantly active in providentially sustaining all that He has created and in the work both of righteous judgment and gracious salvation. Jesus Christ, also, in His incarnation, life, death, rising, and glorification, is precisely God in action (2 Corinthians 5:19). Hence the assertion of Jesus: “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.” – John 5:17.  The Revised Standard Version says it this way; “My Father is working still, and I am working.” It truly keeps it ongoing in the present tense. What the Christian will rest from is the struggle against the forces of evil and the afflictions by which this present life is marred. The rest into which the Christian will enter will not be a state of uneventful boredom. God Himself is dynamic, not static, and so also is His rest and this is something that most people don’t give thought too. When asked what Heaven will be like, most people are at a loss as to what will be occurring, but rest assured (no pun intended) that our eternal lives will be very eventful and fulfilled in service to the Lord and as I stated before, it will be a total and complete rest from any form of strife.

pd peaceful rest

Consequently, all that a Christian rests from simply sets him free to be active ceaselessly and joyfully in the service of God, the Creator and Redeemer. In perfect harmony with all God’s works, and in complete fulfillment, Christians exultantly praise and serve God Almighty. Joy will be full, without possibility of improvement or even any deficiency in that joy (see for reference Revelation 4:8–11; 5:8–14; 7:9–12). Such will be the rest without end of that eternal Sabbath that has a morning eternally but no evening: “Let us therefore diligent to enter that rest.” – Hebrews 4:11. The Revised Standard Version states to “therefore STRIVE to enter that rest,” (bold added), which implies a more aggressive pursuit of rest than the NKJV’s word usage of “diligent”.

The concept of true rest is so foreign to so many and yet it is one of the most blessed assurances and promises that we as Christians, as God’s children can be sure that we will partake of. It truly is part of God’s inheritance that rightfully belongs to His children (see for reference Colossians 1:12).

Daily Prayer & Praise 7/27/2022

Prayer for Wednesday 7-27-2022

Lord our God, bring us together as one. Give us Your Spirit so that we may know You closer, more intimately, so that joy may fill our hearts, not only for ourselves but also for others. Root out evil from the earth. Sweep away all that offends You, all lying, deceit, and hate between nations. Grant that all people may come to know You, so that disunity and conflict may be swept away and Your eternal Kingdom may arise on earth and we may rejoice in it. For Your Kingdom can come to people even while on earth to bring them happiness and to make them Your own children. Your Kingdom even now is alive and strong within our hearts. Yes, Lord God, we want to be Your children, Your people, held in Your hand, so that Your name may be honored, Your Kingdom may come, and Your perfect will be done. In Jesus’ precious name and to Yours and His glory!

Amen.

Origin of “Ben Hur”

Two infidels once sat on a railroad train, discussing the life of Christ. One of them said, “I think an interesting romance could be written about him.” The other replied, “And you are just the man to write it. Tear down the prevailing sentiment about His divinity, and paint Him as a man—a man among men.”

The suggestion was acted upon and the romance written. The man who made the suggestion was Colonel Ingersoll, the noted atheist. The writer was General Lew Wallace, and the book was called Ben Hur.

In the process of constructing the life of Christ, Gen. Wallace found himself facing the greatest life ever lived on earth. The more he studied, the more he was convinced Christ was more than man. Until one day, he was forced to cry “Verily, this was the Son of God!”

After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number . . . saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” – Revelation 7:9-10

Ephesians 4:12 – A.B. Simpson

thought of day header

For Wednesday July 27, 2022:

EPHESIANS 4:12

Ephesians 4:12 (NKJV)
The edifying of the body of Christ.

God is preparing His heroes, and when the opportunity comes He can fit them into their place in a moment and the world will wonder where they came from. Let the Holy Ghost prepare you, dear friend, by all the discipline of life; and when the last finishing touch has been given to the marble, it will be easy for God to put it on the pedestal, and fit it into its niche.

There is a day coming, when, like Othniel, we, too, shall judge the nations, and rule and reign with Christ on the millennial earth; but ere that glorious day can be, we must let God prepare us as He did Othniel at Kirjethsepher, amid the trials of our present life, and in the little victories, the significance of which, perhaps, we little dream. At least, let us be sure of this, that if the Holy Ghost has got an Othniel ready, the Lord of heaven and earth has a throne prepared for him.

Is it for me to be used by His grace,
    Helping His kingdom to bring,
Is it for me to inherit a place,
E’en on the throne of my King?

Little things are made important in the Scriptures. This is an apparently out-of-the-way incident. Out of the way! What way? Out of our way, possibly; but what is our way? A little path leading nowhere: a road we have made with which to please ourselves to go up and down upon, and suppose to be the universe.

Child of the King . . .

*Pastor’s Note: Are you a child of the King? Jesus IS the King of kings. This is a testimony wrapped up in rhyme from our dear Brother-in-Christ, Mike Armijo. This is from one of his older poems that I have been blessed to collect from his postings on Facebook. Please also check out his Book of Poetry, The Journey Home, A Collection of Poetry which you can find by clicking on the book title; I have it and it’s a great inspiration.

CHILD OF THE KING . . .

I’m wrapped up in HIS majesty, a child of the KING of KINGS; how joyously my heart sings.

In awe; amazed by HIS sweet grace, one day I’ll see HIM face to face and by HIS side I’ll take my place.

I’m wrapped up in HIS love for me; the one who holds my destiny, HE shed HIS blood to set me free.

I have a hope no one can take; and trust the ONE who took my place; HE fights for me, I’ve won the race.

I am a child of the KING, molded by the POTTER’S hand; I know the joy which HE can bring, and long to do as HE commands.

In me I pray HIS will is done, by faith I’m walking with GOD’S SON.

I am a child of the KING and know the joy salvation brings; HE hides me under the shadow of HIS wings.

Daily Prayer & Praise 7/26/2022

Prayer for Tuesday 7-26-2022

Lord God, we thank You for Your Word, greatest and most glorious of all that comes to our human life. Every day we want to find more joy in Your help, in what You are doing for us and within our communion with You. Again and again we feel and rejoice in the new help, new strength, and new courage for life given by Your Word. We seek to find and abide in Jesus Christ, our source of eternal Life. He will surely come to establish Your Kingdom and we pray You send Him quickly. Praise to Your name, eternal, glorious, almighty God! Be with us weak, lowly people. Strengthen us in spirit, and enable us to persevere until everything is fulfilled that is promised by Your everlasting Word. In the name of the Living Word, Christ Jesus we pray.

Amen.

Hard To Dominate One’s Self

A college president not long ago made this arresting statement to a class of graduating seniors: “It gets easier and easier for man to dominate his universe … and harder for him to dominate himself.” He went on to say, “It matters little what you learn or express if in the end you cannot find some ways of working things out with your neighbors.” We cannot dominate the universe, but, with God’s help, we can dominate ourselves.

For there are many insubordinate, both idle talkers and deceivers . . . whose mouths must be stopped. – Titus 1:10-11

A Preacher From The Dead – C.H. Spurgeon

thought of day header

For Tuesday July 26, 2022:

A PREACHER FROM THE DEAD

Luke 16:31 (NKJV)
“But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets,
neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’”

Spirit that hath returned from another world, tell me, how are men judged? Why are they condemned? Why are they saved? I hear him say, “Men are condemned because of sin. Read the ten commandments of Moses, and you will find the ten great condemnations whereby men are for ever cut off.” I knew that before, bright Spirit; thou hast told me nothing! “No,” says he, “and nothing can I tell.” “Because I was hungry, and ye gave me no meat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink; I was sick, and ye visited me not; I was in prison, and ye came not unto me; therefore, inasmuch as ye did it not unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye did it not to me. Depart, ye cursed!” “Why, Spirit, was that the word of the king?” “It was” says he. “I have read that too; thou hast told me no more.” If you do not know the difference between right and wrong from reading the Scripture, you would not know it if a spirit should tell you; if you do not know the road to hell and the road to heaven from the Bible itself, you would never know it at all. No book could be more clear, no revelation more distinct, no testimony more plain. And since without the agency of the Spirit, these testimonies are insufficient for salvation, it follows that no further declaration would avail. Salvation is ascribed wholly to God, and man’s ruin only to man. What more could a spirit tell us, than a distinct declaration of these two great truths.—“O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thine help found!” Beloved, we do solemnly say again, that Holy Scripture is so perfect, so complete, that it cannot want the supplement of any declaration concerning a future state. All that you ought to know concerning the future you may know from Holy Scripture.
