Lord, Restrain Our Thoughts

prayer and praise header 3
Liturgy of The Blessed Apostles, Prayer for Saturday 12-24-2022

O our Lord and God, restrain our thoughts, so that they do not wander amid the vanities of this world. O Lord our God, grant that I may be united to the affection of your love, unworthy though I be. Glory be to you, O Christ. Ascend into the chamber of your renowned light, O Lord; sow in me the good seed of humility; and under the wings of your grace hide me through your mercy. If you were to mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? Because there is mercy with you.

Amen.

CHRIST IS CHRISTMAS! HE IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON!
He was sent and He came to fulfill a mission; ALL-Man, ALL-God, carrying the treasure of His precious blood from the humble manger to the Cross of Calvary just so it could be spilled for all mankind. God’s sacrificial lamb, payment for OUR penalty of sin in the world. His gift is free to ALL who are willing to receive it.

Responsibility and Accountability – 5

expository teaching header 1

Scripture Text – Ezekiel 18-21

Responsibility is one of the major themes of these four chapters. By dealing with the subject of personal and national responsibility, Ezekiel was able to answer the frequent complaints of the people that the Lord was treating them unfairly. Responsibility and accountability are needed themes in our own day. Irresponsibility is rampant and very few people are willing to take the blame for wrongs committed or mistakes made.

National Responsibility

Please read Ezekiel 20:1-44 for the background to this section.

Ezekiel delivered this message in about August of 591 B.C., to some of the Jewish elders who came to his house to “inquire of the Lord.” But the prophet knew that their hearts were not right with God and that they had no right to ask the Lord for instruction (see also Ezekiel 14:1–3; 33:30–33). A willingness to submit to the Lord and obey Him is the mark of the person who can seek God’s guidance and expect to receive it. Ezekiel’s response to their request was to review the history of the nation of Israel and point out the repeated rebellion of the people and the long-suffering of their gracious Lord.

The American editor and writer Norman Cousins wrote in a Saturday Review editorial from April 15, 1978, “History is a vast early warning system.” But some anonymous historian has also stated, “The one thing we learn from history is that we don’t learn from history.” The Canadian educator and author, Dr. Laurence J. Peter, stated his perspective on this theme, “History teaches us the mistakes we are going to make.” It’s surprising then that the Jewish historians, prophets, and psalmists were honest enough to declare the sins of the nation and write them down for future generations to read! But you have to ask yourself, why? I would venture to say that aside from the fact that they were inspired by the Holy Spirit to do so, it was also so that future generations of theirs wouldn’t make the same mistakes that they made. But, alas, God’s people haven’t begun to learn the lessons, let alone obey them.

et God's plans at work

Scripture teaches that God is working out His plan for the nations (Acts 14:14–18; 17:22–31; Daniel 5:21; 7:27) and that His people Israel are at the heart of that plan. True there are many scholars who believe that Israel had their chance and all the promises now belong to the Church, but that is not what the Bible declares. Other nations are mentioned in Scripture, but primarily as they relate to Israel, for Israel is the only nation with whom God has ever entered into a covenant relationship. At Sinai, after Israel left Egypt, God gave them His law (Exodus chapters 19–24); and before they entered the Promised Land, He reaffirmed that law and gave them the terms and requirements of the covenant they had to obey in order to possess and enjoy the land (Deuteronomy chapters 5–8 and 27–30). It was because they violated the terms of the covenants that Israel, as a nation has suffered as she did.

Before we review the history of Israel and the lessons we can learn from it, we must deal with an important matter of interpretation. In chapter 18, Ezekiel taught that the children were not punished for the sins of the fathers, but in this chapter, he seems to say that the past sins of the nation (carefully documented) were the cause of Israel’s failure and the Babylonian invasion. “Will you judge them, son of man, will you judge them? Then make known to them the abominations of their fathers.” This statement from the Lord suggests that God was judging the Jews because of what their fathers had done.

However, that wasn’t what the Lord was saying to Ezekiel. By reviewing the history of the nation, God was judging that current generation because they were guilty of the same sins of unbelief and rebellion. The Prophet Jeremiah said that his generation of Jews was even worse than their fathers! (Jeremiah 16:12). In this historical summary, God proved that He had been consistent in His dealings with the Jews. But as you remember from earlier in chapter 18, the exiles had complained that God had not treated Israel fairly, but their national history proved that God was not only fair with them but also very long-suffering and merciful. God wasn’t punishing the Jews in Ezekiel’s day because of the sins their fathers committed centuries before but because Ezekiel’s contemporaries had committed the very same sins! That’s why God reviewed the history of Israel by pointing out that their present sins were the same as their ancestors from the past.

The Best Gift

food for thought header 2
Arthur James Balfour, 1st Earl of Balfour, also known as Lord Balfour, was a British Conservative statesman who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1902 to 1905. He is noted as stating the following:

The best thing to give to your enemy is forgiveness; to an opponent, tolerance; to a friend, your heart; to your child, a good example; to a father, deference; to your mother, conduct that will make her proud of you; to yourself, respect; to all men, charity.

Numbers 6:24

thought of day header

Friday December 23, 2022

Numbers 6:24
“The LORD bless you and keep you.”

Yes, may the Lord bless you as you go about your work, striving to make others happy at Christmas time.

God grant that both you and I may wear ourselves out making things pleasant for others. That is what He did, born yon Christmas night. Think of Him when you feel tired and weary!

As you go about your tasks washing, and dusting, and polishing, and decorating for Christmas, may the Lord bless your work!

But do not forget yourself!

There is no doubt a great deal of dust in many a corner of your heart. A Christmas housecleaning! A general accounting before God toward the close of the year. Then the old Christmas Gospel of the Savior who was born will fill your poor soul with the glorious music of Christmas.

And then a word to you, you who go about your work making things ready for Christmas for yourself and your dear ones without a thought of Him who brought Christmas to this earth of ours. Perhaps you, too, will sing Christmas carols, and perhaps you also will read the Christmas Gospel together with your dear ones after the tree has been lighted. Perhaps you will feel that the rusty strings of your soul have been touched again. But a longing, a sigh, perhaps a tear—and you lay aside both the Book and the “Child.”

My friend, there was nothing festive about being born in a manger and dying on a cross.

But He could not endure to think that your life should be filled with empty joys and real sorrows and that you should at last pass on into unfathomable and endless woe.

However, after He has made ready to celebrate Christmas with you, you push Him quietly out through the door. You feel that your Christmas joy would vanish if Jesus should remain.

Be converted to God now, and yours will be a new joy and a new Christmas.

Reflecting With God 12/23/2022

reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

Friday Reflecting

Your law is within my heart. – Psalm 40:8.

How beautifully is the office of conscience set forth in the ring, which according to the fable, a magician presented to his prince! The gift was of inestimable value, not for the diamonds and rubies and pearls that gemmed it, but for a rare and mystic property in the metal. It sat easily enough in ordinary circumstances; but so soon as its wearer formed a bad thought or wish, designed or concocted a bad action, the ring became a monitor. Suddenly contracting, it pressed painfully on the finger, warning him of sin. The ring of that fable is just that conscience which is the voice of God within us, which is His law written on the fleshly tablets of the heart.

Prayer for Friday

Lord our God, our Father in heaven and our Father on earth, our Lord and our Ruler, we thank you that to this very day you have guarded and guided us and delivered us from great need. We praise you with hearts full of hope as we continue on our pilgrimage. For Christmas Day is coming with its message of hope, peace, and joy that we may somehow bring honor to you in spite of all hindrances, mistakes, and sin, in spite of all death and the horror that is evidenced around us. We know that you hold us steadfastly in your hands. With your help we can look ahead, and again and again we may take a small step forward and live to the praise and honor of your name. So be with us now and bless us in Christ Jesus for your glory.

Responsibility and Accountability – 4

expository teaching header 1

Scripture Text – Ezekiel 18-21

Responsibility is one of the major themes of these four chapters. By dealing with the subject of personal and national responsibility, Ezekiel was able to answer the frequent complaints of the people that the Lord was treating them unfairly. Responsibility and accountability are needed themes in our own day. Irresponsibility is rampant and very few people are willing to take the blame for wrongs committed or mistakes made.

Leadership Responsibility

Please read Ezekiel 19:1-14 for the background to this section.

Ezekiel had made it clear that individual Jews were responsible for their own sins, but it was also true that their leaders had led them astray because they had all rebelled against God. Jeremiah had told the kings of Judah to surrender to Nebuchadnezzar because he was God’s chosen servant to chasten and discipline Israel, but they had refused to obey. Zedekiah, Judah’s last king, had agreed to a treaty with Nebuchadnezzar but then had broken it and sought help from Egypt. It was this foolish act that moved Nebuchadnezzar to send his army to Jerusalem and destroy the city and the temple.

Whether you read secular or sacred history, you soon discover that people become like their leaders. If you have had any experiences with leadership in the business world, or leadership in churches, you will see that the same thing applies and a business or a church, takes on the “likeness” or personality of the leaders. It was the same with the people who applauded Solomon when he built the temple, they also applauded Jeroboam when he set up the golden calves and instituted a new religion. One of the hardest tasks of Christian leaders today is to keep our churches true to the Word of God so that people don’t follow every religious celebrity whose ideas run contrary to Scripture. It appears that being popular and being “successful” are more important today than being faithful and obedient to the Lord’s will.

In discussing the sins of the leaders, Ezekiel used two familiar images, the lion and the vine, and he presented his message in the form of a funeral lament for “the princes of Israel.” David’s exalted dynasty had come to an end, and the men holding the scepter were nothing at all like David. Ezekiel wouldn’t even call them “kings” but instead referred to them as “princes” (see Ezekiel 7:27; 12:10, 12). Instead of lamenting their demise, the “funeral dirge” actually ridiculed the rulers of Israel; but later (Ezekiel 21:27) Ezekiel would announce the coming of Messiah, the Son of David, who would be a worthy King.

et lioness of Israel

Israel is like a lioness (Ezekiel 19:1-9). The lioness represents the nation of Israel, or at least the royal tribe of Judah (Genesis 49:9; Numbers 23:23; 24:9; 1 Kings 10:18–20; Micah 5:8). The first royal “whelp” as the King James Version puts it, was Jehoahaz, who reigned over Judah for only three months (see also 2 Kings 23:31–35). He was also known as “Shallum” (Jeremiah 22:10–12). Pharaoh Neco took him captive to Egypt where he died. The second royal “whelp” was Jehoiachin, who reigned three months and ten days (see also 2 Kings 24:8–16; 2 Chronicles 36:9–10). Ezekiel describes him as “roving” and “roaring” among the princes and the nations. Nebuchadnezzar took him to Babylon along with 10,000 captives and the temple treasures, and there he died. Jehoiachin turned a deaf ear to the preaching of Jeremiah, and the prophet didn’t have anything good to say about him (Jeremiah 22:18–19). In this brief parable, the Lord made it clear that these two kings of Judah thought themselves to be great leaders, but they ignored the Word of God and He cut them down after their brief reigns. They were nothing more than untrained and undisciplined young lions, “whelps”!

Israel is like a vine (Ezekiel 19:10–14). This is a familiar image in Scripture (Genesis 49:9–12Isaiah 5; Psalm 80:8–13; Jeremiah 2:21) and in Ezekiel’s prophecy (Ezekiel 15; 17:1–10). The fruitful vine produced many kings who rebelled against God and were punished by being transplanted to Babylon, from “many waters” to a “wilderness” (see also Jeremiah 31:27–28). The last king of Judah, Zedekiah, broke his treaty with Babylon, rebelled against Nebuchadnezzar, and lost the scepter and the throne (2 Kings 24:17–25:7). With Zedekiah the Davidic dynasty ended, and he too died in captivity in Babylon (Jeremiah 52:11).

Had the nation of Israel obeyed the Lord, it would have become and remained a mighty lion and a fruitful vine that would have brought glory to the name of the Lord. Israel would have been a “light unto the Gentiles” (Isaiah 42:6; 49:6) and many would have trusted in the true and living God because of them. Israel didn’t keep the terms of the covenant however, but the Lord did; and that’s why He chastened them and scattered them. God’s chosen people have no temple, priesthood, sacrifice, or king (Hosea 3:4–5). Jesus Christ, Israel’s Messiah, came as the lion of the tribe of Judah (Revelation 5:5) and the true vine (John 15:1), “a light to bring revelation to the Gentiles” (Luke 2:32), and the rightful heir to the throne of David (Luke 1:68–69), and His own people rejected Him. One day they shall see Him return in those same roles and then they will receive Him, and God’s gracious covenant with David will be completely fulfilled (2 Samuel 7) when Jesus reigns in His kingdom (Ezekiel 34:23–24; 37:24–25; Matthew 1:1).

Caring For Family’s Killer

food for thought header 2
In 1946, Czeslaw Godlewski was a member of a young gang that roamed and sacked the German countryside. On an isolated farm they gunned down ten members of the Wilhelm Hamelmann family. Nine of the victims died, but Hamelmann himself survived his four bullet wounds.

Godlewski recently completed a twenty-year prison term for his crimes, but the state would not release him because he had nowhere to go. When Hamelmann learned of the situation, he asked the authorities to release Godlewski to his custody. He wrote in his request, “Christ died for my sins and forgave me. Should I not then forgive this man?”

The Drawing of The Father

thought of day header

Thursday December 22, 2022

John 6:44
“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him.”

When God draws me, the issue of my will comes in at once—will I react on the revelation which God gives; will I come to Him? Discussion on spiritual matters is an impertinence. Never discuss with anyone when God speaks. Belief is not an intellectual act; belief is a moral act whereby I deliberately commit myself. Will I dump myself down absolutely on God and transact on what He says? If I will, I shall find I am based on Reality that is as sure as God’s throne.

In preaching the gospel, always push an issue of will. Belief must be the will to believe. There must be a surrender of the will, not a surrender to persuasive power; a deliberate launching forth on God and on what He says until I am no longer confident in what I have done, I am confident only in God. The hindrance is that I will not trust God, but only my mental understanding. As far as feelings go, I must stake all blindly: I must will to believe, and this can never be done without a violent effort on my part to dissociate myself from my old ways of looking at things, and by putting myself right over on to Him.

Every man is made to reach out beyond his grasp. It is God Who draws me, and my relationship with Him in the first place is a personal one, not an intellectual one. I am introduced into the relationship by the miracle of God and my own will to believe, then I begin to get an intelligent appreciation and understanding of the wonder of the transaction.

Thursday Reflecting

I delight to do Your will, O my God. – Psalm 40:8.

We need to watch against a “grudging service.” The enemy is always trying to get in the word “duty” instead of the word “delight”; he says a stern “you must” instead of the loving “you may.” There is no slavery like the slavery of love, but its chains are sweet. It knows nothing of “sacrifice,” no matter what may be given up. It delights to do the will of the beloved one.

Daily Prayer & Praise 12/22/2022

prayer and praise header 4
Prayer for Thursday

Dear Father in heaven, let your joy be always in us, your children. Let your joy bring light and peace to our lives, no matter what happens around us so that we may be a reflection of your light to the world around us. May we serve you in joy, aware of your peace at all times, so that something of this peace may go out from us to grieving hearts and to regions of the world that are in darkness. Father in heaven, how many unhappy people look up without knowing where to find help! But you will come to them when they seek you with their whole heart. We beseech you, come to those who mourn, and let them find joy and trust for their redemption in Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Responsibility and Accountability – 3

expository teaching header 1

Scripture Text – Ezekiel 18-21

Responsibility is one of the major themes of these four chapters. By dealing with the subject of personal and national responsibility, Ezekiel was able to answer the frequent complaints of the people that the Lord was treating them unfairly. Responsibility and accountability are needed themes in our own day. Irresponsibility is rampant and very few people are willing to take the blame for wrongs committed or mistakes made.

Individual Responsibility – Continued

Please read Ezekiel 18:1-32 for the background to this section.

You can blame yourselves (Ezekiel 18:19–24). From last lesson: The Jews own unbelief (remember, they rejected Jeremiah’s message) and disobedience (they worshiped pagan idols and defiled the temple) brought the Babylonian army to their gates as God’s tool; and Zedekiah’s breaking of the covenant with Nebuchadnezzar brought the army back to destroy Jerusalem.

However, Ezekiel was giving the Jewish nation a message of hope! If they would truly repent and turn to the Lord, He would work on their behalf as He promised (1 Kings 8:46–53; Jeremiah 29:10–14). But, if they persisted in sinning, the Lord would continue to deal with them as rebellious children. God has no delight in the death of the wicked (Ezekiel 18:23, 32; see 1 Timothy 2:4 and 2 Peter 3:9), but He isn’t obligated to invade their minds and hearts and force them to obey Him either. This is something to remember and take to heart if you, like myself, are continually praying for the lost.

In Ezekiel 18:24, Ezekiel isn’t dealing with what theologians call “the security of the believer,” because the issue is physical life or death, as stated in God’s covenant (Deuteronomy 30:15–20; Jeremiah 21:8). The righteous man who adopted a sinful lifestyle in defiance of God’s law would suffer for that decision. It wasn’t possible for the Jews to “accumulate points” with God and then lose a few of them when they sinned. People have the idea that God measures our good works against our bad works, and deals with us according to whichever is the greater. But from Adam to the end of time, people are saved only by faith in what God revealed to them, and their faith is demonstrated in a consistently godly life.

et grace through faith

You cannot blame the Lord (Ezekiel 18:25–32). For the third time, Ezekiel quoted the words of the complaining exiles, “The way of the Lord is not fair.” Essentially they were saying and complaining that God wasn’t “playing fair” with His people. But Ezekiel pointed out that it was the people who weren’t being fair with God! When they obeyed the Lord, they wanted Him to keep the terms of the covenant that promised blessing, but when they disobeyed, they didn’t want Him to keep the terms of the covenant that brought chastening and discipline. They wanted God to act contrary to His own Word and His own holy nature for their own selfish benefit.

“God is light” (1 John 1:5), which means He is holy and just, and “God is love” (1 John 4:8, 16), and His love is a holy and pure love. Nowhere does Scripture say that we’re saved from our sins by God’s love, because salvation is by the grace of God through faith (Ephesians 2:8–10); and grace is love that pays a price. In His great love, God gave a gracious covenant to Israel, requiring only that they worship and serve Him alone with all their hearts. When sinners repented and sought the Lord, in His grace the Lord would forgive them; but when people deliberately rebelled against Him, in His holiness, God would punish them with discipline after bearing with them in His long-suffering and patience. Simply stated, what could be fairer than that?! For that matter, if God did what was fair, He would consign the whole world into the pits of hell!

The conclusion of Ezekiel’s message was an invitation from the Lord for the people to repent (change their minds), turn away from their sins, cast away their transgressions like filthy garments, and seek a new heart and a new spirit. God promised them a new heart if only they would seek Him by faith (Ezekiel 11:19; see also 36:26). This was one of the key themes in the letter Jeremiah had sent to the captives in Babylon (see again Jeremiah 29:10–14), but the people hadn’t taken it to heart and rejected it. As stated earlier, God made it clear that He found no delight in the death of the wicked, but if the wicked found delight in their sinful ways and would not repent, there was nothing the Lord could do but obey His own covenant and punish them. Ezekiel develops this theme and idea further as we go along.

At Home With Son’s Killer

food for thought header 2
During the Korean war, a South Korean Christian, a civilian, was arrested by the communists and ordered shot. But when the young communist leader learned that the prisoner was in charge of an orphanage caring for small children, he decided to spare him and kill his son instead. So they shot the nineteen-year-old boy in the presence of his father.

Later the fortunes of war changed, and the young communist leader was captured by the United Nations forces, tried, and condemned to death. But before the sentence could be carried out, the Christian whose boy had been killed pleaded for the life of the killer. He declared that he was young, that he really did not know what he was doing. “Give him to me,” said the father, “and I’ll train him.”

The United Nations forces granted the request, and that father took the murderer of his boy into his own home and cared for him. Today the young communist is a Christian pastor.

Luke 11:13

thought of day header

Wednesday December 21, 2022

Luke 11:13
“Give us day by day our daily bread.”

It is very hard to live a lifetime at once, or even a year, but it is delightfully easy to live a day at a time. Day by day the manna fell, so day by day we may live upon the heavenly bread, and live out our life for Him. Let us, breath by breath, moment by moment, step by step, abide in Him, and, just as we take care of the days, He will take care of the years.

God has given two precious promises for the days. “As thy days so shall thy strength be,” is His ancient covenant, and the literal translation of our Master’s parting words to His disciples is, “Lo, I am with you all the days, even unto the end of the age.”

Like the little water spider that goes down beneath the waters of the pool enclosed in a bubble of air, and there builds its nest and rears its young, and lives its little life in that bright sphere down beneath the slimy pool, so let us in this dark world shut ourselves in with Christ in the little circle of each returning day, and so abide in Him, breathing the air of heaven and living in His love.

Reflecting With God 12/21/2022

reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

Wednesday Reflecting

For I am a stranger with You. – Psalm 39:12.

“A stranger with thee,”—then we are the guests of the King. The Lord of the land charges Himself with our protection and provision; we journey under His safe conduct. It is for His honor and faithfulness that no harm shall come to us travelling in His territory, and relying on His word. Like Abraham with the sons of Heth, we may claim the help and protection which a stranger needs. He recognizes the bond and will fulfill it. We have eaten of His salt, and He will answer for our safety. “He that toucheth you toucheth the apple of His eye.”

Daily Prayer & Praise 12/21/2022

Prayer for Wednesday

Lord Jesus Christ, to you we may lift our eyes, for you have broken free from our world of death and live in the glory of life, and you offer your life to us on earth and the hope of eternal life to all who are in you. Let the power of your life be revealed today in us and in many others who want to celebrate the Christmas season. Send your Spirit to move our hearts so that we hear, see, experience, and understand what you and your gift of eternal life truly mean for us. So watch over us in these days and strengthen us in faith. Shed the light of your grace over us and within us. Protect us as your disciples. Lead us into communion with our Father in heaven and into community with you, O Jesus Christ, for all eternity.

Amen.

Christmas Verse 12/20/2022

christmas inspiration header
CHRIST IS CHRISTMAS! HE IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON!
He was sent and He came to fulfill a mission; ALL-Man, ALL-God, carrying the treasure of His precious blood from the humble manger to the Cross of Calvary just so it could be spilled for all mankind. God’s sacrificial lamb, payment for OUR penalty of sin in the world. His gift is free to ALL who are willing to receive it.

May the Spirit of Christmas and the Spirit of Redemption be in your hearts continually from this day forward and may all the precious Joy and gracious Peace from our Heavenly Father be yours in this Season of Christ Jesus!
