The Hymn “America”

food for thought header 2
One bleak day in February 1832, a young theological student sat in his room at Andover Seminary. Samuel Francis Smith was going over a sheaf of German songs for children, given him by a friend, the composer Lowell Mason. Sunset shadows crept into the room and Smith was tired from a strenuous day of study. He was relieved to spend a few relaxed moments going over his friend’s music.

As he hummed over one after another, one struck his fancy. He glanced at the words at the bottom of the page and his knowledge of German told him that the words were patriotic, but they did not appeal to him. He decided to write his own words. He searched around on his desk until he found a scrap of paper, about five or six inches long and two-and-one-half inches wide. On this, as he tapped out the rhythm of the music, he began to write:

My country, tis of thee
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing:
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims’ pride,
From every mountain side
Let freedom ring.

“What Have I Done?”

thought of day header

Tuesday December 27, 2022

Jeremiah 8:6
“What have I done?”

What hast thou done? I hear thee reply, “I have done nothing to save myself; for that was done for me in the eternal covenant, from before the foundation of the world. I have done nothing to make a righteousness for myself, for Christ said, “It is finished;” I have done nothing to procure heaven by my merits, for all that Jesus did for me before I was born.” But say, brother, what hast thou done for him who died to save thy wretched soul? What hast thou done for his church? What hast thou done for the salvation of the world? What has thou done to promote thine own spiritual growth in grace? Ah! I might hit some of you that are true Christians very hard here; but I will leave you with your God. God will chastise his own children. I will, however, put a pointed question. Are there not many Christians now present who cannot recollect that they have been the means of the salvation of one soul during this year? Come, now; turn back. Have you any reason to believe that directly or indirectly you have been made the means this year of the salvation of a soul? I will go further. There are some of you who are old Christians, and I will ask you this question: Have you any reason to believe that ever since you were converted you have ever been the means of the salvation of a soul? It was reckoned in the East, in the times of the patriarchs, to be a disgrace to a woman that she had no children; but what disgrace it is to a Christian to have no spiritual children—to have none born unto God by his instrumentality! And yet there are some of you here that have been spiritually barren, and have never brought one convert to Christ; you have not one star in your crown of glory, and must wear a starless crown in heaven.

Tuesday Reflecting

Because He is your Lord, worship Him. – Psalm 45:11.

The Jews, and the Mahometans also, have curious legends about Abraham’s conversion. They say that, when he was forty years of age, his mind took a religious turn. At that time, observing a star when night overshadowed him, he said, “This is my Lord!” but, keeping his eye on the luminary, and observing it sink ere long, he abandoned all faith in it, wisely remarking, “I like not gods which set.” As the night wore on and left him in painful perplexity, the moon rose up in silver splendor. He turned to her with the delighted exclamation, “This is my Lord!” But following in the wake of the star, she also set; and when her bright rim dipped below the horizon, with her set his faith in her divinity. By and by, from the purple east, the sun leaped up, illuminating the heavens with splendor and bathing the world in light. All his dark doubts now scattered with the morning mists before its beams. “This,” exclaimed Abraham, throwing himself down to worship, “This is my Lord!” But when hours had rolled on, the sun also began to sink; and when, following star and moon, it vanished from his gaze, old legends tell how Abraham rose from his knees to cast aside the faith of his fathers, and worship Him Who alone rules both in heaven and in earth.

Prayer for Tuesday

Lord our God, dear Father in heaven, we come into your presence and ask you to show yourself to us as the true, great, and almighty God, who can shed light into our circumstances and change it all, letting us find reconciliation and redemption in Jesus Christ. Protect and help us with your mighty hand. Let every country and nation see your grace and see the victory over all sin and injustice. Let your justice come on earth, and let peace fill every heart and show in every life. May all that happens to us serve the good to the glory of your name. Help us always look to you, our Lord and God, for you have power to rule everything and to turn everything to its right purpose. You alone are in control and sovereign over everything. For all this we give you thanks and praise in Jesus’ precious and holy name.

Amen.

CHRIST IS CHRISTMAS! HE IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON!
He was sent and He came to fulfill a mission; ALL-Man, ALL-God, carrying the treasure of His precious blood from the humble manger to the Cross of Calvary just so it could be spilled for all mankind. God’s sacrificial lamb, payment for OUR penalty of sin in the world. His gift is free to ALL who are willing to receive it.

May the Spirit of Christmas and the Spirit of Redemption be in your hearts continually from this day forward and may all the precious Joy and gracious Peace from our Heavenly Father be yours in this Season of Christ Jesus!

Responsibility and Accountability – 6

expository teaching header 1

Scripture Text – Ezekiel 18-21

Responsibility is one of the major themes of these four chapters. By dealing with the subject of personal and national responsibility, Ezekiel was able to answer the frequent complaints of the people that the Lord was treating them unfairly. Responsibility and accountability are needed themes in our own day. Irresponsibility is rampant and very few people are willing to take the blame for wrongs committed or mistakes made.

National Responsibility – Continued

Please read Ezekiel 20:1-44 for the background to this section.

Israel in Egypt (Ezekiel 20:5–8). God “chose” the nation of Israel when He called Abraham to leave Ur of the Chaldees and go to the land of Canaan (Genesis 12), but the nation didn’t even exist at that time. God built the nation in the land of Egypt. When Jacob’s family entered into Egypt, they numbered 66 people; Joseph’s family was already in Egypt and they brought the total to 70 (Genesis 46). But when the Jews left Egypt at the Exodus, the fighting men alone numbered over 600,000 (Numbers 1:46), so there may well have been over two million people in the nation. In Egypt, God revealed Himself to the Jews through the ministry of Moses and Aaron as well as through the terrible judgments He inflicted on the land of Egypt. He made it clear that the gods of the Gentile nations were only myths and had no power to do either good or evil. God reminded them how He had judged these false gods in Egypt and proved them to be helpless nothings. (See Exodus 12:12; Numbers 33:4.)

However, while living in Egypt, the Jews began secretly to worship the gods of the Egyptians. After all, if the Egyptians were masters over the Jews, then the gods of Egypt must be stronger than the God of Israel! The Jews defiled themselves with the gods of Egypt and grieved the heart of God. When God opened the way for Israel to leave Egypt, some of the Jews took their Egyptian gods with them! God had sworn by an oath (“I raised my hand”) that He was Israel’s God and that He would set them free and give them the Promised Land. The true God set them free, but they still carried false gods with them! The nation rebelled against God even after He demonstrated His grace and power in delivering them!

et exodus

Israel’s exodus from Egypt (Ezekiel 20:9–10). The Lord had every reason to pour out His wrath on Israel, but for His name’s sake, He rescued His people. God often worked on Israel’s behalf, not because they deserved it but for the glory of His own name (see also Isaiah 48:9; 66:5), just as He has saved His church today “to the praise of His glory” (Ephesians 1:6, 12, 14). The account of the Exodus did go before the Jews as they marched toward the Promised Land (Joshua 2:10), and it did bring glory to God’s name.

Israel at Sinai (Ezekiel 20:11–12). Israel tarried about two years at Sinai where God revealed His glory and gave them His laws. While they tarried there, Moses directed the construction of the tabernacle and its furniture. But even after seeing God’s glory and hearing His voice, Israel rebelled against Him by making and worshiping a golden calf (Exodus 32). God gave them the Sabbath day (the seventh day of the week) as a sign to remind them that they truly did belong to Him. By setting aside that one day each week to honor the Lord, Israel witnessed to the other peoples that they were a special nation, however, they continued to persist in polluting the Sabbath and treating it like any other day.

The law that God gave Israel at Sinai consisted of statutes and ordinances governing every area of life: their civic responsibilities, the maintaining of courts and judges, the punishment of offenders, and the responsibilities of the people and their priests in the religious life of the nation. But because Israel was a theocracy and God was their King, every law had its religious implications. To break the law was to sin against the Lord, and the people did it frequently.

Those who obeyed God’s law would “live” (Ezekiel 18:11, 13, 21), an important word we considered earlier in the 18th chapter. If you remember, it refers to physical life, not being subject to capital punishment because of deliberate disobedience to God’s statutes. But for the Jew who loved the Lord, trusted Him, and obeyed Him, it included the spiritual life that comes to all who believe through faith. Romans 10:5 and Galatians 3:12 make it clear that nobody is saved simply by obeying the law; but those who trust the Lord will prove their faith by their obedience. Religious people like the Pharisees have a “law righteousness,” but those who trust Christ have a “faith righteousness” that enables them to obey God’s will (Philippians 3:1–16; and see again Romans 10). Salvation is always by faith (Hebrews 11:6) and this faith is always reflected in good works and obedience.

Half The World “Not Free”

food for thought header 2
A global survey of political and civil liberty indicates that personal freedom diminished in the 1970s for eighty-five million people in seven countries.

The assessment was made by Freedom House, a New York-based nonprofit organization that rates nations as free, partly free, or not free.

Sixty-six countries with 42 percent of the world’s population were termed “not free.” The survey listed 1 percent fewer people in the free category than a year earlier.

A New Order

thought of day header

Monday December 26, 2022

Isaiah 65:17
“For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth;
And the former shall not be remembered or come to mind.”

Amid all the world religions, only Christianity is able to proclaim the Bible’s good news that God, the Creator and Redeemer, will bring a new order into being! Indeed, that is the only good news available to a fallen race today. God has promised a new order that will be of eternal duration and infused with eternal life.

How amazing!

It is a promise from God of a new order to be based upon the qualities the exact opposite of mankind’s universal blight—temporality and mortality. God promises the qualities of perfection and eternity—qualities that cannot now be found anywhere on this earth.

What a prospect!

God’s revelation says that Jesus Christ is the eternal Victor, triumphant over sin and death. That is why He is the Head of the new creation which has upon it the banner of eternity rather than of temporality and the mark of life forevermore rather than the mark of death.

Monday Reflecting

As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God. – Psalm 42:1.

Once, a king, in crossing the desert in a lone caravan, was parched with thirst. Dreadful is that dry and thirsty land where no water is! The sands were strewn with the wrecks of caravans, the skeletons of men who had died of thirst lying in that dread cemetery; and then the cry arose, “Water, water! there is no water!” It was a fearful moment. Parched throats and eyes hopelessly looked up to the all-too-cloudy sky along the plain; overhead, the red-hot copper sun. Then said one, “We must let loose the harts,—the light, fleet harts.” They bounded in all directions. Keen in their instinctive scent of water, the spring was found; and then, when they sat to rest beside the beautiful and blessed pool,—then said the king, as he took forth his tablets and wrote, “As the hart panteth after the water-brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.

Prayer for Monday

Lord our God, our light and our life, in our longing to live by your Word we lift our eyes to you. Let your Word come into our hearts. Let your Word help us to understand our lives and our time, so that we can recognize your leading in everything and gather courage every day in spite of our weakness, sins, and faults. We can still find joy, for your kingdom is coming. We can feel that you are among us, however great the anguish and corruption of these times. Let the light of Jesus Christ shine out; let your Spirit of peace and grace come to all nations so that your will may be done and your plans for this earth are perfectly fulfilled. Free people from all their confusion and doubts. Release them from their bondage. Make them free for what is good, true, and eternal. May your name be praised among us today and forevermore. Let the name of Jesus Christ reign supreme and sovereign!

Amen.

High and Lifted Up

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one cried to another and said:

“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!” – Isaiah 6:1-3.

Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:

“Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” – Luke 2:8-14.

Never has anyone spoken more eloquently of great religion than did the heavenly host on that first Christmas. They sang: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is well pleased!” (NASB).

Great religion is concerned with heaven and earth, God and people, people in relation to God and to each other. Great religion is spiritual and ethical, personal and social, individual and corporate. It encompasses the whole of life.

It is glory to God in the highest. He is the great supremely divine God, lifted high above all things He has made. He is not a prisoner of His creation nor lost in its processes. He is not caught in our narrow time frame nor limited by our geographical boundaries. His dwelling place is mystery and He walks in an unapproachable light.

pd glory to God

Isaiah in his transforming experience in the temple encountered no little god. He tells us, “In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up.” This God was not caught in the tangled web of life so familiar to Isaiah. His voice was not drowned out by the raucous voices of earth. He was lifted high above it all.

No one has written more movingly of the divinely exalted God than Isaiah. He had the right to write that way about God since that is the way he had experienced Him. Later in his book, Isaiah speaks of God who measures the waters in the hollow of His hand, marks off the heavens with a span, stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in. He weighs the mountains in scales.

The psalmist also shares Isaiah’s eloquence in describing this great and mighty, exalted and mighty God. He speaks of God who makes the clouds His chariots and rides on the wings of the wind (see Psalm 104:3).

Our universe is so vast. It seems to fade away into infinity. Yet, being a created order it must have limitations. Our finite minds cannot grasp those boundaries, nor our most powerful telescopes find them. Wherever they are God stands above them like a craftsman stands above the thing he has created. He made the universe and established its boundaries.

We need to constantly remind ourselves how important this kind of God is for our worship. We pray best and worship best as we stand on the frontiers of mystery. Indeed, unless we stand there, sooner or later, we cease to pray and fail to worship. We do not worship our nor do we pray to those things we can understand. We worship the God who dwells in mystery yet who has let us know that He is loving and trustworthy. Such a God is what Christmas has revealed; such a God Jesus has disclosed and revealed.

It is glory to God in the highest. Glory is brightness, splendor, radiance, majesty, and magnificence. Such a God inspires us to worship Him, to offer Him praise and adoration.

Possibly no generation has needed to recapture the sense of the divine and supreme God more than our own. So much mystery has fled our world. Our children look up into a brilliant heaven and think, There is where we put our satellites. They are not moved to exclaim, “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is thy name in all the earth!” – Psalm 8:1, 9 (NASB).

pd earth is the lords

This is God’s world and He will see that it fulfills the purpose for which He has created it. Yet, God is not so divine that He is out of touch with our earth. Isaiah heard God saying, “Heaven is My throne and earth is My footstool.” – Isaiah 66:1. But God does more than touch earth with His feet. He is present redemptively in His world, and there is no nook or corner where He is absent.

He is the God who comes down to show concern for poor, oppressed, and enslaved people. God comes down as a liberator and redeemer. Christmas is about God who comes down to be with His people, to set them free and liberate them. The Child of Christmas would be called Immanuel which means, “God with us.” – Matthew 1:23.

Never has heaven bent so near to earth, never has God stooped so low to our need as at Christmas. Never has earth lifted its paltry hands in such hope as at Christmas. Heaven and earth! They are held together at Christmas. It is not only glory to God in the highest, it is peace among men of goodwill with whom God is well pleased. God is a moral God who has built ethical principles into the structure of His universe and these moral laws are just as strong and binding as the laws of our physical universe. They require obedience and adherence to for peace to exist.

The Christmases of our time need peace more than other Christmases in history. The shadows of conflict and poverty fall across the landscape of this whole world. “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men in whom he is well pleased.” We need to recognize this gift, this aspect of Christmas and since we are among those “in whom he is well pleased,” let us work and pray for peace this Christmas.

Holding On The Way

classic poetry header
*Pastor’s Note: A.B. Simpson was a very well respected Canadian preacher, theologian and author who lived from December 15, 1843 to October 29, 1919. My prayer is that you will be blessed and inspired by his poetry as much as I am.

HOLDING ON THE WAY

’Tis the promise of God, and it never can fail,
     Unto all who will trust and obey;
Though trials may press, and though foes may assail,
The righteous shall hold on his way.

I shall hold on my way for He holds my hand,
     And He’ll not let me stumble or stray;
While I heed His voice and obey His command,
I surely shall hold on my way.

Questions On Bible Prophecy – 16

prophetic words header wp

*Pastor’s Note: This will be the last of the questions posed from the excellent book by Mark Hitchcock entitled, The Complete Book of Bible Prophecy, at least for the time being as there are many more questions he addresses. My hope and prayer is that these have given some insight into much of the end-times prophecy the Bible speaks of and hopefully alleviates some of the fears and confusion people have about studying prophecy. The following is the last question for the time-being that I present to you from his book:

Will Believers in Christ Know Who the Antichrist Is before Being Raptured to Heaven?

In recent times people seem to be fascinated with trying to identify the Antichrist. Many interesting names have appeared on lists of Antichrist candidates: Napoleon, various Catholic popes, Benito Mussolini, Adolf Hitler, Henry Kissinger, Mikhail Gorbachev, Juan Carlos and his son Philippe, Bill Clinton, or any other person one doesn’t especially like.

These failed attempts often draw a great deal of attention for a while, but they also highlight the danger of trying to identify the Antichrist. The New Testament teaches that believers will not know who the Antichrist is before being raptured to heaven. Second Thessalonians 2:2–3 says:

Please don’t be so easily shaken and troubled by those who say that the day of the Lord has already begun. Even if they claim to have had a vision, a revelation, or a letter supposedly from us, don’t believe them. Don’t be fooled by what they say.

For that day will not come until there is a great rebellion against God and the man of lawlessness is revealed—the one who brings destruction. (NLT)

Paul wrote the Thessalonian believers to clear up some confusion they had about the coming Day of the Lord or the Tribulation period. Evidently someone had taught these believers that they were already in the Tribulation period, but Paul corrected this false teaching by pointing out that the Day of the Lord can’t come until two things happen: (1) a great apostasy or rebellion; and (2) the revelation of the Antichrist or “man of lawlessness.” Since the Antichrist will be revealed at the beginning of the Day of the Lord or Tribulation period and the church will be raptured before this time, it doesn’t appear that Christians will know the identity of the Antichrist before we are raptured to heaven. If you ever figure out who the Antichrist is, then I’ve got bad news for you—you’ve been left behind!

Having said this, I do believe that as we see the last days develop, we may be able to recognize certain individuals who could fit the picture of the Antichrist given in the Bible. However, believers should avoid ever specifically identifying any person as the coming Antichrist. Satan’s superman will be unveiled at the beginning of the Day of the Lord, after the church has been translated to glory. We should spend our time and energy looking for Christ, not the Antichrist.

Mr. Hitchcock’s teachings are informative and enlightening as well as inspirational and any book you can get for yourself from his writings will most definitely be well-worth it. I hope you are blessed AND informed and some of these questions and answers will give you a greater strength to walk in confidence and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Bible prophecy ALWAYS points to God and His plans for this world that He created through Christ Jesus. Therefore, for true Christians, it is meant to be a comfort that God continues as always to have everything under control despite what it might appear to the average person.

Centuries of Meditations – First Century 29-30

devotionals header

29

You never enjoy the world aright, till the Sea itself floweth in your veins, till you are clothed with the heavens, and crowned with the stars: and perceive yourself to be the sole heir of the whole world, and more than so, because men are in it who are every one sole heirs as well as you. Till you can sing and rejoice and delight in God, as misers do in gold, and Kings in scepters, you never enjoy the world.

30

Till your spirit filleth the whole world, and the stars are your jewels; till you are as familiar with the ways of God in all Ages as with your walk and table: till you are intimately acquainted with that shady nothing out of which the world was made: till you love men so as to desire their happiness, with a thirst equal to the zeal of your own; till you delight in God for being good to all: you never enjoy the world. Till you more feel it than your private estate, and are more present in the hemisphere, considering the glories and the beauties there, than in your own house: Till you remember how lately you were made, and how wonderful it was when you came into it: and more rejoice in the palace of your glory, than if it had been made but to-day morning.

Thomas Traherne (1637 – September 27, 1674) was an English poet, Anglican cleric, theologian, and religious writer. Traherne’s writings frequently explore the glory of creation and what he saw as his intimate relationship with God. His writing conveys an ardent, almost childlike love of God, and is compared to similar themes in the works of later poets William Blake, Walt Whitman, and Gerard Manley Hopkins. His love for the natural world is frequently expressed in his works.

The work for which Traherne is best known today is the Centuries of Meditations, a collection of short paragraphs in which he reflects on Christian life and ministry, philosophy, happiness, desire and childhood. This was first published in 1908 after having been rediscovered in manuscript ten years earlier. Before its rediscovery this manuscript was said to have been lost for almost two hundred years and is now considered a much loved devotional.

Gideon, An Unlikely Hero – 9

gs - c.h. mackintosh

Charles Henry Mackintosh (October 1820 – November 2, 1896) was a nineteenth-century Christian preacher, dispensationalist, writer of Bible commentaries, magazine editor and member of the Plymouth Brethren. In 1843, Mackintosh wrote his first tract entitled Peace with God. When he was 24, he opened a private school where he developed a special method of teaching classical languages. Mackintosh went around preaching the gospel to the poor during school holidays. He wrote to John Nelson Darby on August 31, 1853 that the Lord had “called me into larger service than ever,” and he soon concluded that he must give himself entirely to preaching, writing, and public speaking.

Gideon, An Unlikely Hero Part 9

From last lesson: Thus it has been with all those who have ever been called to occupy a prominent place in the Lord’s work; and even the blessed Master Himself—though surely needing no training or discipline, inasmuch as He was ever perfect,—to set us an example, spent thirty years in retirement before He came forth in public.

All this is full of most wholesome instruction for our souls. Let us seek to take it in and profit by it. No one can ever get on in public work without this private teaching in the school of Christ. It is this which gives depth, solidity, and mellowness to the character. It imparts a tone of reality and a steadfastness of purpose most desirable in all who engage in any department of the Lord’s work. It will invariably be found that where anyone goes to work without this divine preparation, there is shallowness and instability. There may perhaps for a time be more flash and show in those superficial characters than in those who have been educated in the school of Christ; but it never lasts. It may create a momentary sensation, but it soon passes away like the morning cloud or the early dew. Nothing will stand but that which is the direct result of private communion with God—secret training in His presence—the excellent discipline of the school of God.

Let us see how all this is exemplified in Gideon’s case. It is very evident that this honored servant was called to pass through deep exercises of soul before ever he took a single step in public action, yes, before he ever unfurled the standard of testimony in his father’s house. He had to begin with himself, with his own personal condition, with his own heart. Those who will be used for others must begin with themselves. So Gideon found it in himself. Let us pursue his history.

“And the Lord said unto Gideon, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man. And he said unto Him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then show me a sign that thou talkest with me. Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. And He said, I will tarry till thou come again. And Gideon went in and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour; the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto Him under the oak, and presented it. And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so. Then the angel of the Lord put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the Lord departed out of his sight. And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the Lord, Gideon said, Alas, O Lord God! for because I have seen an angel of the Lord face to face. And the Lord said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die” (Judges 6:16–23).

Here we reach a profoundly interesting stage of Gideon’s preparatory course. He is called to enter practically and experimentally into the great and universal law for the servants of God, namely, “When I am weak, then I am strong.” This is a most precious law, and one which forms an indispensable element in the education of all Christ’s servants. Let no one imagine that he can ever be used in the Lord’s work, or ever make progress in the divine life, without some measure of real entrance into this invaluable principle. We hold it to be absolutely essential in forming the character of the true servant of Christ. Where it is not known, where it has not been felt, where it has not been to some extent realized, there is sure to be a lack of subduedness, unbrokenness, and self-occupation, in some form or another. There will be more or less of self-confidence, and various points and angles turning up here and there, and acting as a sad hindrance to all that is good, useful, and holy.

Lasting Meaning

thought of day header

For Saturday December 24, 2022

Luke 2:14
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

A man by the name of A. F. Wells once stated, “Take Christ out of Christmas, and December becomes the bleakest and most colourless month of the year.”

If you have ever celebrated Christmas without understanding its true meaning, that statement probably rings eerily true. Many people go through the motions of the holidays—buying gifts, baking cookies, and sending Christmas cards—but after it is all said and done, they are left with a longing in their hearts, a vast emptiness that was not filled by all the merriment of the season. December becomes a month in which credit cards and stress levels are maxed out. And though precious memories are made on Christmas morning, there is no lasting meaning for the celebration.

For Christians, however, Christmas is a time to celebrate and rejoice that Jesus came down in the form of a baby and brought salvation to an undeserving world. Today, focus your thoughts on the only true and lasting meaning of Christmas, that Christ came down from heaven to bring us gifts that remain even after the day is over: hope, peace, and love.

The birth of Jesus—Saviour, Messiah, Lord—translates all that is shabby,
despairing, and dying into newness, joy, and life.

A Definitive Standard

life in focus header

BELIEVE anything you want. “You’ve got your truth, I’ve got mine.” The frightening thing about such modern viewpoints is that those who believe them become the definers of truth and reality. They leave no room for objective truth or absolutes. Yet if there are no absolutes determined by a Source above ourselves then we are all gods, or else no truth exists, and we have nothing to bind us together or define how we should treat each other. God did not leave His people Israel in such a philosophical morass. He clearly spelled out moral and spiritual absolutes and warned His people to seek ultimate truth from Him, not from other sources (Leviticus 20:6–8). Relative truth is only in the mind of the beholder; in reality, there is no such thing, there is only absolute truth!

After The Crash

anecdotal stories

“No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations. I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.” – Genesis 17:5-6.

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” – Matthew 28:18-20.

Help – Arriving Too Late

The Genessee County Sheriff’s Department received a call reporting a car being driven erratically. Within three minutes a trooper received the alert and rushed to intercept the offender. The deputy stopped at an intersection and gasped in astonishment. Twenty seconds before, the speeding car had crossed that intersection and down the street he saw the results: the wreckage of a driver education car nearly demolished from the head-on collision. Three students and their driving instructor were dead inside. The guilty party and his friend had been drinking while driving.

Only three minutes elapsed between the time the call came into the Sheriff’s office and deputies began seeking the car. By only twenty seconds the car beat the deputy to the intersection. For the families of the deceased, it might as well have been aeons. Help coming too late is like a pardon after the execution.

Knowing that Jesus met us at our point of greatest need, will we, while time allows, meet the lost at theirs? God sent good news of great joy in Bethlehem. Never voiced before that night, it has never since been stilled. It is the message Christians must continue to tell—while there is time.
