Not That at All
Scripture References: Job 42:6; 2 Corinthians 7:8-10
Columbus’ fortunes plummeted after his first voyage. When he returned under fire from his second, he decided that pride had led God to frown on his achievements. To curry God’s favor, he removed his fine clothing, put on the coarsest garments he could find, and left castles for religious houses. Recovering a sense of humility did Columbus no harm, but it helped his fortunes none at all. For his administrative mistakes—and being a foreigner—were responsible for his disasters more than anything else.
What of the multiple, escalating disasters afflicting Western culture? Ours is not a problem of sound theology and poor methodology; of a faulty electronic component that we can replace and thus function perfectly. No, ours is so egregious a sin that it is soluble only by a bone-rattling repentance before God! Non-Christians don’t want to hear that, but it’s true.
