For Friday August 26, 2022:
2 CHRONICLES 16:9
2 Chronicles 16:9 (NKJV)
“For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth,
to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.”
The Word of God is two-edged. This word also. And very sharp. It cuts to the very heart, for it speaks of the heart which is perfect toward the Lord. And puts to all of us the very pointed and persistent question: Do you fear God with all your heart?
Is your heart in your prayers? Or is it habit and duty which drive you to pray?
Is your heart in your reading of the Bible? Or do you read a chapter merely for the sake of having read it?
Is your heart in your striving against sin? Or do you fight against sin simply because you fear its consequences, your heart meanwhile clinging to sin?
Is your heart in your remorse? Do you grieve because you sin, because you act contrary to the will of God, or do you grieve simply because you fear the consequences of sin?
Is your heart in the sacrifices you make? Are you glad to give of your time and your money, are you glad to forego your own comfort and convenience?
What is your answer to these searching questions?
I imagine some one will say: “My heart is cut to the quick by all of these questions. My heart is so wicked that, alas, I do not know what to do.”
My friend, I shall preach the Gospel to you today, the glad tidings that you, yes, you have a heart that is perfect toward Him.
“No, you are mistaken,” you will reply. You will say: “My heart is divided; I am half-hearted, lukewarm.”
Yes, all people have hearts like that, but all those who make known their lukewarm and divided hearts before the Lord, all those are perfect toward Him.
Draw nigh to His heart which broke in death for your divided heart. And give thanks to Him that you may rest in Christ with everything—also with your heart.
