Ravenhill Quotes – Leonard Ravenhill

Leonard Ravenhill (June 18, 1907 – November 27, 1994) was an English Christian evangelist and author who focused on the subjects of prayer and revival. He is best known for challenging western evangelicalism (through his books and sermons) to compare itself to the early Christian Church as chronicled in the Book of Acts. He was a proponent of the moral government or Governmental theory of atonement.

One of Leonard’s gifts was his ability to spontaneously create insightful spiritual maxims as he spoke. These were short, memorable observations about God, the church, and the world. David Bercot always took a notebook with him to these meetings to write down some of Leonard Ravenhill’s observations and maxims. Here are some of Leonard’s spiritual insights from those meetings:

“A popular evangelist reaches your emotions. A true prophet reaches your conscience.”

“The last words of Jesus to the church (in Revelation) were ‘Repent!’”

“A true shepherd leads the way. He does not merely point the way.”

“You never have to advertise a fire. Everyone comes running when there’s a fire. Likewise, if your church is on fire, you will not have to advertise it. The community will already know it.”

“Your doctrine can be as straight as a gun barrel—and just as empty!”

“John the Baptist never performed any miracles. Yet, he was greater than any of the Old Testament prophets.”

“I doubt that more than two percent of professing Christians in the United States are truly born again.”

“Our God is a consuming fire. He consumes pride, lust, materialism, and other sin.”

“There are only two kinds of persons: those dead in sin and those dead to sin.”

  1. Mark Stripling, Ransomed Ministries says:

Back in the 90’s I pastored in the Dallas area, and a small group of us went to Lindale once a month for a “sit at his feet” day with Brother Ravenhill and the man who formed Calvary Commission, whose mane I no longer can recall. He was plain spoken and aggravated with the compromised spiritual condition of the church in America. He felt the church had lost it’s way. The quotes I remember most are “Our kids know more about what’s on channel 5 than what’s in Matthew 5,” and “Sports has become America’s God.” He really talked alot about the church in China, where many were martyred for their faith in those days. He wondered how many in America would be willing to die for their faith in Christ. We brought him to north Dallas to speak to a group of pastors. The majority of them did not like him. Too legalistic, they said. I guess holy living and strict adherence to the word of God is a little too much for even some preachers!! There will never be another like him. His teachings remain treasures to those who want a living relationship with a powerful, mighty God!

    • Usually brother Mark, people who do tend to live a life adhering to the Gospel and “practicing” to be holy as God is holy ARE considered too legalistic, when in fact they have a very strong grasp of Godly Grace. It IS a lifestyle and I would imagine, the more intimate you are with Christ, the more you become like Him, the more “strict” you might seem, yet it is just a person casting off the unnecessary things of the world. I have to agree with him though on some of his quotes, for today, even much more so than before he passed sports and television, etc., have become “religions” in their own right!!
By the way, it’s always good to hear from you brother; just wanted you to know I pray for EVERYONE that makes it to my blog. Just my way of making up for things I can’t do. God bless you and yours, very richly!!
