Back to God’s Word
Jeremiah 6:16; Acts 5:42
In the early American West, mountain men trapped beaver to near extinction. Strip mining, mineral exploration, and overgrazing multiplied the ecosystem’s disaster. In Southwestern Wyoming, nearly all of the once-thriving trout streams dried up from mismanagement by well-intentioned people. A solution was to put beavers to work along meager waterways. Invariably, meadows began to grow for hundreds of feet along streams surrounding beaver dams, preventing erosion and slowing spring runoff. It was an ingeniously simple idea: Put the original earth engineers to work. Give them the tools—in this case, trees—and let the beavers follow their instincts to build dams.
The same is true spiritually. Humanity casts aside scriptural values to establish their own: living together replaces marriage, military force preempts ethics, and sexual freedom displaces monogamous relationships. All of which leads into a confusing moral wilderness, begetting an eroded self-esteem, a deteriorating public spirit, and a fearful expectation of future calamity. In response, God’s people call for a return to His ancient Word. Those who hear and heed God’s Word find that amazing things happen. Even in the arid desert of life they find oases. Where useless concepts produced barren results, they find fruitful purpose. In an eroding intellectual ferment they find productive, verdant thought.
God had an outstanding idea when He put the beaver to work conserving the soils of earth—he had a brilliant idea when He gave the Bible as the guide, standard, and touchstone of all morality and behavior.
