The Star of Christmas – 3

Scripture References: Matthew 2:1-12

Guiding Light

Jesus Christ, to whom the star led, also leads us somewhere. He leads us in two directions, to God and to our brother. These are the two poles of great religion.

The God to whom Jesus leads us is no cosmic blur. You can almost say He is a God with a face. He is a God of truth, love, and justice, and He demands these of us. There is rigor in the demands of this kind of faith.

Jesus also leads us to our brother. He leads us across all kinds of barriers and all kinds of social proprieties to get to Him. He takes us to where men and women are lonely, rejected, poor, dehumanized, sick, and lost. Follow Him in any of the four Gospels of our New Testament, and He will take you to where people are hurting.

There are those who want Jesus to lead them to God but not to their brother. They want a religion that is essentially personal, spiritual, ethereal, and other-worldly. They want to be lifted above the loneliness, injustices, and brokenness of our world. Such a religion will allow us to live side by side with the inequalities, racism, and exploitations, and never lift a hand to change the situation. Indeed, it will allow us to profit from these inequalities and to share in these injustices in a most respectable sort of way. To those who are satisfied with this kind of religion Jesus says: “It is not enough. Come, let me take you by the hand and lead you to your brother. He is afraid and he is hurting. He needs you.”

On the other hand there are those of us who are willing to be led to our brother but not to God. Personal and spiritual religion turns us off. We had rather spend our time feeding the hungry, healing the sick, defending the weak, and championing the cause of justice in our world. If we are to believe in anything, let it be in humanity. Essentially they say, “our works are enough. Our works are our religion.” Jesus says to us: “It is not enough. Come, let me take you by the hand and lead you to God. You not only need to serve; you need to worship. You are too weak and frail to be the object of your ultimate trust. You are like a broken reed and cannot stand the weight of heavy faith. You must trust in something and somebody beyond yourself.”

Light in the Darkness

The light of the star that identified Jesus will never go out.

Someone has said that there is not enough darkness in the universe to put out the light of one small candle. It is true. If darkness cannot put out the light of a small candle, how helpless it is to put out the light of a star.

John in his Gospel speaks of the light in Jesus which the darkness has not put out. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5). The New Living Translation (NLT) says, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.”

CHRIST IS CHRISTMAS! HE IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON!
He was sent and He came to fulfill a mission; ALL-Man, ALL-God, carrying the treasure of His precious blood from the humble manger to the Cross of Calvary just so it could be spilled for all mankind. God’s sacrificial lamb, payment for OUR penalty of sin in the world. His gift is free to ALL who are willing to receive it.

May the Spirit of Christmas and the Spirit of Redemption be in your hearts continually from this day forward and may all the precious Joy and gracious Peace from our Heavenly Father be yours in this Season of Christ Jesus!

Daily Prayer & Praise 12/28/2023

prayer and praise header 4
Lord, hear our prayer:

Lord, there is no God like you and there is no God other than you. You alone are the Creator and Sustainer of the whole universe. You alone are the center and source of all life. You alone are the center and source of all that is good, true, worthy and wholesome. You alone are the center and source of hope, peace, joy, fulfilment and satisfaction. We praise you, our living, loving God, that you are not remote from us, but in Christ you hid your glory and you walked in the dust of our world. You came as the Servant King to bring healing, hope and a new beginning to all who put their trust in you. For all of this we give you thanks and praise in Jesus’ name.

Amen.

Reflecting With God 12/28/2023

reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

“When He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.” – John 16:8.

No human teacher can do it; conscience cannot do it; law in none of its forms, human or divine, can do it: nay, the gospel itself cannot do it. Although the Word of God is the sword of the Spirit, yet, unless the Spirit of God draws forth that sword, it lies powerless in its sheath. Only when the Spirit of God wields it, is it quick and powerful, and sharper than a two-edged sword, piercing to the dividing asunder of the soul and spirit, a discerner of the thoughts and purposes of the heart. Therefore, as the work of convincing the world of sin is one which nothing less than the Spirit of God can effect, and which yet must be effected thoroughly, if sin is to be driven out from the world, our Saviour was mercifully pleased to send the Comforter to produce this conviction in mankind.

Continuous Conversion

thought of day header

Thursday December 28, 2023

Matthew 18:3
“Unless you are converted and become as little children.”

These words of Our Lord are true of our initial conversion, but we have to be continuously converted all the days of our lives, continually to turn to God as children. If we trust to our wits instead of to God, we produce consequences for which God will hold us responsible. Immediately our bodies are brought into new conditions by the providence of God, we have to see our natural life obeys the dictates of the Spirit of God. Because we have done it once is no proof that we shall do it again. The relation of the natural to the spiritual is one of continuous conversion, and it is the one thing we object to. In every setting in which we are put, the Spirit of God remains unchanged and His salvation unaltered but we have to “put on the new man.” God holds us responsible every time we refuse to convert ourselves, our reason for refusing is willful obstinacy. Our natural life must not rule, God must rule in us.

The hindrance in our spiritual life is that we will not be continually converted, there are ‘wadges’ of obstinacy where our pride spits at the throne of God and says—‘I won’t.’ We deify independence and willfulness and call them by the wrong name. What God looks on as obstinate weakness, we call strength. There are whole tracts of our lives which have not yet been brought into subjection, and it can only be done by this continuous conversion. Slowly but surely we can claim the whole territory for the Spirit of God.

Spiritual Nuggets 12/28/2023

Reframe It

“ ‘Too often they have attacked me from my youth.’ Let Israel say, ‘Too often they have attacked me from my youth, yet they have not prevailed against me’ “ (Psalm 129:1-2). As these verses show, sometimes problems can be solved by simply reframing the issue at hand.

Peter makes a “reframing” move in his first letter. He could have focused on the people’s sin and their general need to repent, but then their attention would be on the problem, not solving it. So he shifts the focus: “Therefore, ridding yourselves of all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, like newborn infants long for the unadulterated spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up to salvation” (1 Peter 2:1-2). Peter calls them to approach their relationship with Christ like a newborn would milk. They must make Christ such a priority that He becomes something they need and long for. And as they long, their sinful behavior will be resolved.

Similarly, Peter addresses the people’s conflict with their culture as an opportunity for God to make them strong, like the stones used to build strong foundations: “And you yourselves, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 2:5).

We can always choose where to place our attention. Often, we turn our attention toward preventing something (sin) at the cost of actually doing something good (growing in the Lord). If we keep our focus on our relationship with Christ, we can rise above our circumstances and find victory. “The blessing of Yahweh be upon you. We bless you in the name of Yahweh” (Psalm 129:8). Reframing our lives makes way for blessing, it gives God room to do transformative work.

The Star of Christmas – 2

pastor's desk header

Scripture References: Matthew 2:1-12

The Light – Continued

The Bible says in effect: When you have peeled away layer after layer of things as they appear, you come to the heart of things as they are and you can call it by no better name than light.

Light is the answer to darkness in the moral and spiritual realm just as much as it is in the physical. You can’t cast out darkness with darkness, you cast out darkness with light. Truth is the answer to falsehood, justice is the answer to injustice, love is the answer to hatred and self-centeredness, and only gentleness can bind up the wounds that cruelty inflicts.

It is not strange then that Jesus was identified by a star and that we still speak of Him as light.

There is a tradition that states the wise men, who were likely among the most prestigious persons in Persia, combining in themselves the roles of scientist, statesman, and priest, went home, gave away their great wealth, and became preachers of the gospel of the Prince of peace. They felt He was the answer to their darkness. True or not, the analogy is fitting.

Focused Light

The star that identified Jesus led somewhere. It was not diffused light that shone everywhere but nowhere in particular. It was light that was focused, that shone somewhere in particular. Where did it shine? Over a thing as tiny and small as a baby. The wise men followed the star and “behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was” (Matthew 2:9).

We are tempted to follow a star with diffused light. We like to believe everything but nothing in particular. Such faith makes no demands on us. We take from it what comfort and meaning it can give, but it puts no yoke on us. And, what is worse, such a faith has no real power. It doesn’t change life and doesn’t make us agents of change.

The sunlight when mildly diffused will warm your hand. But catch it in a concave lens, focus its rays, and it will burn your hand. You can set a piece of paper on fire with such concentrated sunlight. The same is true of faith. If it is to be powerful, it has to be focused. It has to be concentrated.

Jesus was born into a world of many gods and many lords. Paul, speaking of the religious situation of his world and contrasting it with the uniqueness of the Christmas faith wrote: “For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”— yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist” (1 Corinthians 8:5-6). The religious situation was a diffused one. You could believe in as many gods as you wanted to. But not so with Christian faith. It was focused on one God and His mighty action in Jesus Christ. Like the star of Christmas, it shone in a face.

The Pantheon in Rome is the best preserved building of the ancient world. It was a great architectural and engineering feat from the beginning and was erected as a temple to all the gods. It was indeed a temple of diffused religious devotion. Several hundred years passed, and the temple to all the gods became a Christian church. It was stripped of all its altars save one, and that one was dedicated to Jesus Christ. The diffused religious situation was transformed to a concentrated devotion centering in Jesus Christ as Lord.

The most ancient confession of Christmas faith was not, “the many gods are lords,” but “Jesus Christ is Lord.” The star had led to Him, and the church has never been able to forget that.

Lord, hear our prayer:

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we praise you for Jesus’ utter determination to fight against all that is evil and all that spoils life as you meant it to be. We praise you more that he did it for us, that we might be free to become the people you always intended us to be. May your Holy Spirit so flood our hearts and lives that we may glorify Christ as our Savior and give honor to him as our Lord. Thank you gracious and merciful, Father.

“Because you are not of the world . . . therefore the world hates you.” – John 15:19.

None of you can be the people of God without provoking envy; and the better you are, the more you will be hated. The ripest fruit is most pecked by the birds, and the blossoms that have been longest on the tree, are the most easily blown down by the wind. But fear not; you have naught to do with what man shall say of you. If God loves you, man will hate you; if God honors you, man will dishonor you. But recollect, could ye wear chains of iron for Christ’s sake, ye should wear chains of gold in heaven; could ye have rings of burning iron round your waists, ye should have your brow rimmed with gold in glory; for blessed are ye when men shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for Christ’s name’s sake; for so persecuted they the prophets that were before you.

Genesis 8:12

thought of day header

Wednesday December 27, 2023

Genesis 8:12
He . . . sent out the dove, which did not return again to him anymore.

First, we have the dove going forth from the ark, and finding no rest upon the wild and drifting waste of sin and judgment. This represents the Old Testament period, perhaps, when the Holy Ghost visited this sinful world, but could find no resting-place, and went back to the bosom of God.

Next, we have the dove going forth and returning with the olive leaf in her mouth, the symbol and the pledge of peace and reconciliation, the sign that judgment was passed and peace was returning. Surely this may beautifully represent the next stage of the Holy Spirit’s manifestation, as going forth in the ministry and death of Jesus Christ, to proclaim reconciliation to a sinful world.

There is a third stage, when, at length, the dove goes forth from the ark and returns no more; but it makes the world its home, and builds its nest amid the habitations of men. This is the third and present stage of the Holy Spirit’s blessed work. Let us welcome the Dove to a nest in our hearts.

Surprise Redemption

We often fail to be amazed at redemption. Perhaps we’re only dimly aware of our own failings, or (worse) we are blind to how amazing it is that God has shown us grace at all.

In Psalm 126 the psalmist describes the joy that should come as a response to God’s redemption. In the past God’s restorative work had cast Israel into a state of surprised shock, they “were like dreamers” (Psalm 126:1). They were filled with laughter and praise. His glory was present, and His redemption was a mighty witness to both the Israelites and the surrounding nations (Psalm 126:2).

But the psalmist quickly reveals that Israel is still in need of restoration. Likely taken into captivity, the people live in hope and anticipation that God will restore them once more: “Those who sow with tears shall reap with rejoicing. He who diligently goes out with weeping, carrying the seed bag, shall certainly come in with rejoicing, carrying his sheaves” (Psalm 126:5-6).

In his letter to early churches, Peter speaks about the hope that the prophets had foretold and the things that angels were curious about, the grace prepared through His Son (1 Peter 1:10-12). Peter tells them that this savior “was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has been revealed in these last times for you” (1 Peter 1:20).

This surprise redemption is unlike any other. Its hope, Christ’s sure resurrection, gives us incredible security: We have been “born again, not from perishable seed but imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God” (1 Peter 1:23). We should be awed by this incredible hope and respond with obedience, praise, and love for our neighbor (1 Peter 1:22).

The Star of Christmas – 1

pastor's desk header

Scripture References: Matthew 2:1-12

Matthew in his beautiful story of the birth of Jesus makes much use of a star. He tells how wise men came from the East to Jerusalem, having followed the light of a star. They asked: saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him” (Matthew 2:2). They continued to follow the star beyond Jerusalem “until it came to rest over the place where the child was” (Matthew 2:9).

It was His star and Jesus was identified by its light. He was a baby with the light of a star in His face.

Eternity Entered Time

Light is one of the best marks of identification for Jesus. Matthew saw the coming of Jesus as the fulfillment of a prophecy that said: “The people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.” (Matthew 4:16).

Luke spoke of His coming as “whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high” (Luke 1:78). The birth of Jesus was like a dawn, like the coming of morning. And Luke in his exquisitely beautiful story of the birth of Jesus tells how “the glory of the Lord shone around” (Luke 2:9) the shepherds as they kept “watch over their flock by night” (Luke 2:8). John at the beginning of his Gospel wrote: “In him was life, and the life was the light of men” (John 1:4).

The climatic event of Jesus’ life, His resurrection, was set within light, the fresh lovely light of early morning. The women who brought spices to anoint His body discovered He had risen at the breaking of the morning. They looked into His empty tomb by the light of dawn.

Jesus said of Himself, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).

It is not strange, however, that light is used to identify Jesus since the Bible as a whole makes such extensive use of it. It is one of the best metaphors to tell what God is like, what He is doing, and His presence in our world. It speaks eloquently of such moral and spiritual forces as, love, truth, goodness, and justice.

The Bible begins with light. The first thing God created was light. God said, “Let there be light” (Genesis 1:3), and light broke over a dark, restless, chaos. The Bible ends with light. There is a new city perfectly lighted with no trace of darkness or evil in it. From beginning to end the Bible makes an extensive use of light.

The Bible speaks of the light of God’s countenance and His causing His face to shine upon us. His truth is light, and His Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. Isaiah tells us that “the Lord will be your everlasting light” (Isaiah 60:20).

There are three bold attempts to define God in the New Testament. God is spirit. God is love. God is light. “God is light and in him there is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). All three definitions are so simple. All words in the definitions are monosyllables. It must be the route of simplicity that leads us to reality.

Isaiah’s simple yet urgent invitation is typical of the spirit of the Bible: “O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord” (Isaiah 2:5).

Daily Prayer & Praise 12/26/2023

prayer and praise header 4
Lord, hear our prayer:

Holy and majestic Father, we praise you for Jesus, who for our sakes left the majesty of heaven and entered into all that life means for us, that we might find our place in the heaven of your love. Lord, how can we not praise you for that extravagant grace which took Christ to the cross and for your power which raised him from the dead? We praise you for his life of complete faith in you and his example of obedience to your will, no matter the cost. Glory, honor and thanks are yours, forevermore.

Amen.

Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

“You are My friends.” – John 15:14.

Oh! Friends of God, why do you not make more of your transcendent privileges? Why do you not talk to Him about all that wearies and worries you, as freely as Abraham did, telling Him about your Ishmaels, your Lots, and His dealings? Why do you not fall on your faces while God talks with you? Life should be one long talk between God and us. No day should close without our talking over its history with our patient, loving Lord: entering into His confessional; relieving our hearts of half their sorrow, and all their bitterness, in the act of telling Him all. And if only we get low enough, and be still enough, we shall hear His accents sweet and thrilling, soft and low, opening depths which eye hath not seen, nor ear heard; but which He has prepared for those who love and wait for Him.

The Vanguard and Rear Guard of the Church

thought of day header

Tuesday December 26, 2023

Isaiah 52:12
For the LORD will go before you, and the God of Israel will be your rear guard.

We shall soon launch into another year, and hitherto we have found our years to be years of trouble. We have had mercies, but still we find this house of our pilgrimage is not an abiding city, not a mansion of peace and comfort. Perhaps we are trembling to go forward. Foreseeing trouble, we know not how we shall be able to endure to the end. We are standing here and pausing for a while, sitting down upon the stone of our Ebenezer to rest ourselves, gazing dubiously into the future, saying, “Alas! What shall I do? Surely, I shall one day fall by the hand of the enemy.” Brother, arise, arise; anoint your head, and wash your face, and fast no longer; let this sweet morsel now cheer you; put this cup to your lips, and let your eyes be enlightened: “The Lord Jehovah will go before you.” He has gone before you already. Your future path has all been marked out in the great decrees of his predestination. You shall not tread a step which is not mapped out in the great chart of God’s decree. Your troubles have been already weighed for you in the scales of his love; your labor is already set aside for you to accomplish by the hand of his wisdom. Depend upon it, your:

“Times of trial and of grief,
     Times of triumph and relief,
All shall come and last and end
As shall please your heavenly Friend.”

Remember, you are not a child of chance. If you were, you might indeed fear. You will go nowhere next year except where God shall send you.

Unity in Adversity

Distress can unite people. In difficult moments, in shared pain, we discover our true friends. When David fled from King Saul, his divided family was suddenly supportive of him, as was every man in the region who was distressed or indebted (1 Samuel 22:1-2; compare 1 Samuel 17:28-30). A shared sense of despair reveals the humanity in us all, helping us to get past our disputes and work together for one purpose.

For a disjointed band of brothers to be united beyond initial circumstance, they must have one purpose. That’s precisely what David gave his motley crew: They would fight the Philistines (Israel’s greatest enemies) together (1 Samuel 23:1-5). David took a terrible situation and turned it into an opportunity to do what needed to be done. As rightful king, David was obligated to protect Israel. Yet it still took outstanding courage and raw leadership to act upon that obligation. When most people would have been paralyzed by fear, David was prepared for action, and that marked him as Israel’s new leader. David’s strength in adversity enabled him to unite people for a cause, and his God-centered focus made him the ideal leader of God’s people.

Peter’s remark in his first letter resonates with this idea: “When you have prepared your minds for action, by being self-controlled, put your hope completely in the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former desires you used to conform to in your ignorance” (1 Peter 1:13-14). The ignorance Peter addresses is sin. Although David was dealing with someone else’s sin, both he and Peter identify the same solution: Focus on God and His work.

When things get difficult, we should be aware of how we are being subtly drawn away from God’s work. If we can stay focused on Christ, we can stay focused on God’s purposes. In return, we will find the ability to lead any motley crew toward redemption.

When God Made Himself Little – 5

Scripture References: John 1:1-18

Full of Truth

Not only is Jesus full of grace, He is also full of truth. Truth is one of the watchwords of John’s Gospel, occurring over thirty times. Jesus embodied truth. He said once, “I am the truth.” The truth Jesus incarnated was more moral than intellectual. His truth was the kind of faithfulness, trustworthiness, goodness, and love we see in God. Jesus said once that “the truth will set you free” (John 8:32). It was a liberating truth. It could snap the bonds that hold people, strike off the chains that enslave them, and bear away the bars that imprison them! It found captives and left them free. It found people serving powers that would one day destroy them and left them serving the God who alone had the right to possess them.

The Spirit Jesus would send in His place would be like Him. He would be the Spirit of truth. Jesus stated, “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth” (John 16:13).

There was no room for greed, selfishness, or possessiveness in the life of Jesus. He was full of grace. There was no room for misrepresentation, falsehood, or propaganda. He was full of truth.

Jesus was so much like us and yet so unlike us. He had our humanity, lived in our kind of world, spoke our language, and knew our pain and the limitations of our time and place. Yet He was so unlike us. He was so full of grace and we are not. He was full of truth and we are not.

Lawrence of Arabia once stated, “No man could lead Arabs except he ate the rank’s food, wore their clothes, lived level with them, yet appeared better in himself.”

Jesus met this qualification to a superlative degree. He ate at our tables, wore our clothes, and lived with us. He was like us. Yet, there was a quality of excellence in Him which we can never begin to achieve. His face had light without shadows. His love was without blemish and His goodness without marring of any kind.

John tells us, “He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:11-12).

The same thing will happen this Christmas. He will be coming to His own, those whom He loves and claims. There will be those who reject Him, turning into ways of darkness and death. There will be those who receive Him, turning into ways of light and life. Let us be among those who receive Christ.
