Centuries of Meditations – First Century

65

Had I been alive in Adam’s stead, how should I have admired the Glories of the World! What a confluence of Thoughts and wonders, and joys, and thanksgivings would have replenished me in the sight of so magnificent a theatre, so bright a dwelling place; so great a temple, so stately a house replenished with all kind of treasure, raised out of nothing and created for me and for me alone. Shall I now despise them? When I consider the heavens which Thou hast made, the moon and stars, which are the works of Thy fingers: what is man that Thou art mindful of him, or the son of man that Thou visiteth him! Thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and crowned him with glory and honour. O what love must that needs be, that prepared such a palace! Attended with what power! With what wisdom illuminated! Abounding with what zeal! And how glorious must the King be, that could out of nothing erect such a curious, so great, and so beautiful a fabric! It was glorious while new: and is as new as it was glorious.

Thomas Traherne (1637 – September 27, 1674) was an English poet, Anglican cleric, theologian, and religious writer. Traherne’s writings frequently explore the glory of creation and what he saw as his intimate relationship with God. His writing conveys an ardent, almost childlike love of God, and is compared to similar themes in the works of later poets William Blake, Walt Whitman, and Gerard Manley Hopkins. His love for the natural world is frequently expressed in his works.

The work for which Traherne is best known today is the Centuries of Meditations, a collection of short paragraphs in which he reflects on Christian life and ministry, philosophy, happiness, desire and childhood. This was first published in 1908 after having been rediscovered in manuscript ten years earlier. Before its rediscovery this manuscript was said to have been lost for almost two hundred years and is now considered a much loved devotional.

*Pastor’s Note: A.B. Simpson was a very well respected Canadian preacher, theologian and author who lived from December 15, 1843 to October 29, 1919. My prayer is that you will be blessed and inspired by his poetry as much as I am.

O HOLY GHOST, THOU BROODING DOVE

O holy ghost, Thou brooding Dove,
Thou’rt fluttering o’er my nestling soul,
With holy peace and wooing love,
And making all my being whole.

My spirit sings with joyful praise,
And laughs aloud with holy mirth,
As if some new and glorious life
Had just received its heavenly birth.

From distant heights and boundless depths
The living stream within me flows,
Flooding the garden of my heart,
Till every flower with fragrance blows.

Sometimes with breath of living flame
Thou dost my inmost soul inspire,
Till all my heart becomes one prayer
Of mighty faith and strong desire.

SEPTEMBER 12, 1907, on the forty-second anniversary of his ordination.

Anecdotal Story 12/31/2023

The Worth of a Kudo

Scripture References: Judges 6:12, 14; Luke 7:48, 50

Abba Eban, the Israeli statesman, impacts the twentieth century as one of its most eloquent speakers. From his earliest days he developed a skill generally lost to our generation. Henry Steele Commager and the London Times literary supplement compared him to Charles Burke and even Cicero. In classic understatement Eban noted that one need not take the eulogies at full value to be impressed and encouraged by them.

Positive reinforcement appreciates present achievement and encourages greater achievement. What people are inside determines whether praise makes them shrink, grow, or merely swell; whether it thwarts or stimulates greater effort, or freezes them in self-adoration. Humble people accept kudos as a challenge to excel present achievement. They serve from love, in competition only within themselves, and appreciate the notice someone takes of their efforts.

The Star of Christmas – 5

pastor's desk header

Scripture References: Matthew 2:1-12

Light in the Darkness – Continued

The story is told of a young Jewish girl in a Warsaw ghetto who managed to escape over the wall and hide in a cave. She died there shortly before the Allied Army came to deliver her. Before she died however, she scratched on the wall three things: First, “I believe in the sun even though it is not shining.” Second, “I believe in love, even when not feeling it.” Third, “I believe in God, even when He is silent.”

We are like the old-time mariners of the sea guided by the North Star. When the star is hidden by a heavy overcast, we know it is still shining, that the overcast will sooner or later pass, and the star will reappear. In the meantime we keep sailing, remembering the direction where we last saw the star.

So in the darkest hours we keep remembering the light we have seen in Jesus, believing it is more powerful than the overcast which temporarily hides it. We are sure that His light alone is strong and that someday it will completely rout and destroy all the powers of darkness, not leaving behind them a trace of their presumed glory. Then will come the perfectly lighted city with not a shadow of darkness in it.

Walking in the Light

The New Testament assures us that Christ delivers us from the powers of darkness into His marvelous light. There is a fragment of an early Christian hymn that Paul uses in his letter to the Ephesians: “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” (Ephesians 5:14). We, therefore become children of light. “For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness” (1 Thessalonians 5:5).

We are to walk in the light we have seen in Jesus, be reflectors of it, and “proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9). We should not forget what Jesus, who confessed that He was the light of the world, said of His followers: “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14).

Let us make a determination and pledge ourselves to walking in the light we have seen at Christmas. Let us not forget that the star that shone through the darkness of that first Christmas was His star. Let us walk in confidence, believing that if we are faithful to the light we have today more light will be given tomorrow, more the next day, and more the next, until at last we shall walk into the perfect day.

Please keep this in mind and remember that Jesus came as a weak and fragile child, a baby dependent wholly on others when He first came. He is coming again and there will be a final Christmas at His second coming, but He will be neither weak, nor fragile, for He will be coming with the host of angels, sounding the trumpet call, to announce to those believing in Him, that He is taking His bride, His church, home to be with Him and our heavenly Father!

A Blessed Christmas to all who walk in His love and light.

CHRIST IS CHRISTMAS! HE IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON!
He was sent and He came to fulfill a mission; ALL-Man, ALL-God, carrying the treasure of His precious blood from the humble manger to the Cross of Calvary just so it could be spilled for all mankind. God’s sacrificial lamb, payment for OUR penalty of sin in the world. His gift is free to ALL who are willing to receive it.

May the Spirit of Christmas and the Spirit of Redemption be in your hearts continually from this day forward and may all the precious Joy and gracious Peace from our Heavenly Father be yours in this Season of Christ Jesus!

Saturday Prayer & Praise 12/30/2023

Joseph Alleine: Piercing Heaven – Puritan’s Prayers

Who are we, and what is our father’s house, that you have brought us here?

And now, O Lord God, what will your servants say to you? We are silenced with wonder, and must sit down in astonishment. We cannot utter the least of your praises.

What does the height of this strange love mean? And what does it mean to us, that the Lord of heaven and earth should condescend to enter into covenant with dust, and take into his bosom the viperous brood that has so often spit their venom in his face?

We are not worthy to be as the handmaids, to wash the feet of the servants of our Lord; how much less are we worthy to be your sons and heirs, and to be made partakers of all these blessed liberties and privileges you have settled upon us!

But for your goodness’ sake, and according to your own heart, you have done all these great things. Even so, Father, because it seemed good in your sight.

This is why you are great, O God, for there is none like you, nor is there any God besides you.

Amen.

Life In Focus 12/30/2023

life in focus header

What’s the Hurry?

PERHAPS you feel rushed or caught on a treadmill, always focused on a deadline, always thinking about what is happening next rather than what is happening right now.

The people of Isaiah’s time were consumed with anxiety about the Assyrians. They were busily making plans and preparations in case the enemy invaded. But God warned them the key to withstanding the threats of Assyria was not in frenetic activity, but in quiet, confident trust in Him (Isaiah 30:15). It was not that wise planning had no value; it did. But faith in God demands a certain amount of ceasing from work to reflect on one’s situation and the Lord’s ability to handle it.

Conventional wisdom urges us to pause and smell the roses occasionally. Scripture calls us to pause and worship the Lord regularly (Exodus 20:8–10). This principle of a balanced, measured approach to life was established at the end of the first work week in history, when God paused in His work to consider what He had accomplished (Genesis 1:31–2:2).

Why not spend time right now to reflect on your life—where it has come from, where it is, and where it is going. Reflect on your relationships—the conversations you have had, the memories you have gained. Are you willing to take the time to find God in your life?

Sufficient For The Future

thought of day header

Saturday December 30, 2023

2 Corinthians 12:9
[The Lord] said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you,
for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

It’s hard for us to imagine the apostle Paul in a state of weakness, but a perusal of 2 Corinthians chapters 6 and 11 shows us that he suffered terribly as an apostle for the sake of Christ. The most unique experience with weakness that Paul had was one we can learn the most from because it was unnamed. It is the sustaining principle, not the specific problem, that is important.

Paul was made weak by some affliction, and it no doubt concerned him because of its likely impact on his future ministry. How could he serve if he was sidelined by a serious problem? But God said, “Trust Me, Paul. I know the future and your future. I will give you grace to do all you need to do.” And He did. Paul became thankful for his weakness because it highlighted God’s strength. Just as God knew Paul’s future, so He knows yours. If you are worried about your future, perhaps this coming year—especially if you see limitations on your horizon—trust God. The same grace He gave to Paul, He will give to you.

Your future is not bigger than God, nor are your limitations larger than His grace. Your faith in Him means your future is with Him.

Trust the past to God’s mercy, the present to God’s love,
and the future to God’s providence.

Essential Insights on Faith 12/30/2023

Good news from a distant land is like cold water to a parched throat.
PROVERBS 25:25

Billy Graham

I don’t put myself up as a prophet or
someone whom a nation needs. I would
say all the nations need the PREACHING
OF THE GOSPEL. I am an evangelist. The
word “evangelist” comes from the Greek
word keryx, which means “proclaimer.”
I am a PROCLAIMER of the message
of the Bible. I am not preaching some
new idea, some new philosophy, or
something I have thought up. I am
simply PREACHING THE BIBLE, the
same old truths that the church has
believed for centuries.

Faith From The Beginning 12/30/2023

Hindrance, Not an Aid to Faith

NOW, of course, I hear objection made constantly to this sort of reasoning by people who say that pictures, images, icons and all the rest, are an aid to our faith. They help us to visualize what God has already said in His Word. This, beloved, will not, we personally believe, stand the test of Scripture. If God had wanted it thus, and if these things were such a great and necessary aid to faith, He certainly would not have waited centuries and centuries before He permitted man to discover them. It is our firm, personal opinion that God wants us to believe His Word without any other evidence or aid, and that all these so-called aids to faith are rather hindrances and a clever ruse of Satan to draw us away from the Word of the living God.

That is why we preach, that is why we broadcast and teach the Word of God, instead of touring the country presenting religious entertainments and sanctified vaudeville. It is with gravest concern that we view the rapidly increasing tendency to crowd the teaching and the preaching of the Word of God more and more into the background in our services and relegate it to a subordinate and unimportant place in many of our meetings. Instead of the Word being the all-important thing, the tendency is to limit it to a brief sermonette, often superficial, shallow and frothy, while most of the time in the service is given over to interminable, wearisome preliminaries, non-essentials and often mere entertainment. The result can be nothing else than a coming generation of frivolous, shallow, superficial Christians who will fall before the first onslaught of the enemy because they do not have the foundation of the Word under their feet. Lot walked by sight, not by faith. We fear the days of Sodom are being repeated with all the appeal to the eye, accompanied by neglect of the Word of God. It is not in vain that the Lord has said:

“Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot . . . Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed.” – Luke 17:28, 30.

Now, the question arises; What are we going to do about it? Listen, beloved, if you share our fears and our misgivings in this matter, you can do one thing: voice your vehement disapproval and insist on more of the Word of God and less of the appeal to the flesh in your own church and in your own services. You can carefully supervise the things which your children are allowed to see and look at in the home. It can be done if you start early enough and have courage to be firm enough. You can pray for a revival of interest in the Word of God and the teaching of the Word of God among believers.

The Star of Christmas – 4

pastor's desk header

Scripture References: Matthew 2:1-12

Light in the Darkness – Continued

The light that shone in Jesus still shines on, and the darkness has not been able to overcome it, put it out, quench it, or extinguish it.

Now this does not mean that the light that has been seen in Jesus will never seem to flicker low, indeed, seem to have gone out or have been lost.

The wise men must have lost the star. The star is introduced at the beginning of the story, but as it unfolds Matthew says “When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy” (Matthew 2:10). But why such an exclamation of joy? Maybe we can assume they had lost the star, and greatly rejoiced at finding it again. Obviously, they had lost it by day when it had been eclipsed by the sun. But they may have lost it by night as it dipped beneath some Judean hill. They continued their traveling, however, remembering where they had last seen the star, and they journeyed in the faith that it would appear again.

How often the influence of Jesus seems eclipsed by mighty powers just as the star was eclipsed by the sun. He often seems so weak and the forces pitted against Him so strong.

This was certainly true at the beginning. There was the helpless baby Jesus and King Herod with his legions seeking the child’s life. We see Mary and Joseph fleeing with the child to Egypt. They were so weak in their flight and Herod was so strong in his search. But it wasn’t the way it seemed. It was the baby who was strong, Herod who was weak. Matthew tells us that when Herod was dead, an angel appeared to Joseph in Egypt telling him to take the baby home. Jesus outlived Herod, and His influence has had a way of outliving the powerful, cruel, and tyrannical forces of history.

Or take Good Friday for instance. Jesus seemed so weak, stumbling beneath His cross. Tremendous powers of church and state had joined forces to crush Him. Why the amassing of such power against one so weak? And did anything ever look weaker or more helpless than His limp body on the cross? But then came Easter morning, and then they knew that He who stumbled beneath His cross alone was strong.

How often the forces of propaganda, discrimination, injustice, dehumanization, and war seem so powerful and Jesus so weak. They seem to eclipse Him.

Like a star dipping beneath some Judean hill, how frequently the influence of Jesus seems to get lost behind some high mountain of fear, prejudice, hatred, cruelty, and death.

prayer and praise header 4
Lord, hear our prayer:

Abba, Father, Lord, we worship you and we give you praise for the way you have surrounded our lives with your love and touched our hearts with your grace. We praise you that you did not leave us to struggle on our own or to try to find you by our searching. We praise you for the way you speak to us through your word and for the gracious way you listen to our prayers and to our cries for help and hope. We praise you and call you Sovereign, Savior, King, Shepherd, Master, Friend and Lord. We praise you that through Christ you have filled these names with an experience of your loving presence and power. We praise you too that you have given us the joy and the freedom of the Spirit through whom we give you all the glory. In the name of Christ our Savior and Lord.

Amen.

Reflecting With God 12/29/2023

reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

“The Spirit of truth . . . He will guide you into all truth.” – John 16:13.

The Bible is a temple. Unlike that in which Simeon stood, whose holiest courts were open only to a favored few, it is patent to every worshipper. Glorious temple it is! God’s own words its living stones; His immutable promises its pillars; His oath and covenant its foundations; its walls salvation; its gates praise; Jesus Christ its corner-stone; prophets, apostles and saints its high priests, giving forth the responses of Deity! But what will all the glories of this temple be to us, unless, like Simeon, we be led there of the Holy Ghost? Without His influence we shall find a deserted sanctuary. We may have the name of Jesus on our lips and His praises on our tongue; but without the Spirit of God, there will be “no beauty that we should desire Him.”

Matthew 11:6

thought of day header

Friday December 29, 2023

Matthew 11:6
“Blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.”

None of us can avoid feeling the offense which is inherent in the person of Jesus. Sooner or later we are confronted with this enigmatic, inscrutable aspect of His person which even John the Baptist experienced and by which he was tempted.

Look! Yonder sit a father and a mother, one on each side of a little bed. Their child is in convulsions. On their knees they have prayed God to heal their little one. But nay, God does not heal. They have prayed imploringly that God would spare the little one from the cramps. But nay, the little one continues to lie there in its pains until death comes at last.

This seems hard to bear. And Jesus cannot say more at the time than He said to John the Baptist: “Blessed is he, whosoever shall find no occasion of stumbling in me.”

See, a little group of people is making its way home from the churchyard. It is a father and five children. The two youngest children were too small to go along today; they are at home. The others have accompanied mother to her last resting place. The father is a believer in God. But now rebellion steals into his heart. How could God make them motherless, all these little ones?

And for the time being Jesus cannot answer otherwise than he answered the Baptist: “Blessed is he, whosoever shall find no occasion of stumbling in me.”

To be God, our God must also be inscrutable. None of us have therefore learned to know God until we have become aware of His inscrutability.

Not until then is our faith really tested. “Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” This is “blind” trust. However, no faith sees more than blind faith. It sees and knows God so well that it relies upon Him notwithstanding His inscrutability, notwithstanding that aspect of Him which is an occasion of stumbling.

Blessed is he, whosoever shall find no occasion of stumbling in me.”

Spiritual Nuggets 12/29/2023

spiritual nuggets header

Jack-in-the-Box Pride

It’s dangerous to become too confident in the maturity of our own faith. Our pride is like the spring of a jack-in-the-box: Just when we think it’s broken or that we’ve gotten the lid on tight, it springs back to life. It rears its ugly head, bobbing around like a circus fool.

It’s so easy to get caught up in our own achievements, even when it comes to faith. We can grow in knowledge and then look down on others who still need to grow. The psalmist of Psalm 131 presents the solution with a sure, succinct declaration. He fully submits to God’s order. He doesn’t wrestle with the things that don’t make sense, he is able to place these in God’s hand. His inner peace comes from total trust in God: “My heart is not haughty nor my eyes arrogant, And I do not concern myself with things too great and difficult for me. Rather I have soothed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother, like the weaned child is my soul with me” (Psalm 131:1-2).

Maturity of faith is found in childlike trust, trust that sees ourselves as small and God as mighty. Peter also speaks about peace that is a result of having faith that submits to God. Submission allows us to act wisely in a situation, all “for the sake of the Lord” (1 Peter 2:13). Doing good will silence the ignorant (1 Peter 2:15), and if we do good while enduring the mistreatment of others, God will show us His favor (1 Peter 2:20). Ultimately, it’s Christ who serves as the example of submission. Even while suffering and enduring abuse, Jesus “did not commit sin, nor was deceit found in his mouth” (1 Peter 2:22). Instead, He “entrusted himself to the one who judges justly” (1 Peter 2:23).

Jesus’ act of redemption should be the focus of all our actions. While pride is rebellion against Him, forgiveness and grace through Christ are enough to drive us to the end of ourselves and send us into the haven of God’s love. His sacrifice eliminates the need to be prideful and self-seeking. It quiets our souls.

The Star of Christmas – 3

pastor's desk header

Scripture References: Matthew 2:1-12

Guiding Light

Jesus Christ, to whom the star led, also leads us somewhere. He leads us in two directions, to God and to our brother. These are the two poles of great religion.

The God to whom Jesus leads us is no cosmic blur. You can almost say He is a God with a face. He is a God of truth, love, and justice, and He demands these of us. There is rigor in the demands of this kind of faith.

Jesus also leads us to our brother. He leads us across all kinds of barriers and all kinds of social proprieties to get to Him. He takes us to where men and women are lonely, rejected, poor, dehumanized, sick, and lost. Follow Him in any of the four Gospels of our New Testament, and He will take you to where people are hurting.

There are those who want Jesus to lead them to God but not to their brother. They want a religion that is essentially personal, spiritual, ethereal, and other-worldly. They want to be lifted above the loneliness, injustices, and brokenness of our world. Such a religion will allow us to live side by side with the inequalities, racism, and exploitations, and never lift a hand to change the situation. Indeed, it will allow us to profit from these inequalities and to share in these injustices in a most respectable sort of way. To those who are satisfied with this kind of religion Jesus says: “It is not enough. Come, let me take you by the hand and lead you to your brother. He is afraid and he is hurting. He needs you.”

On the other hand there are those of us who are willing to be led to our brother but not to God. Personal and spiritual religion turns us off. We had rather spend our time feeding the hungry, healing the sick, defending the weak, and championing the cause of justice in our world. If we are to believe in anything, let it be in humanity. Essentially they say, “our works are enough. Our works are our religion.” Jesus says to us: “It is not enough. Come, let me take you by the hand and lead you to God. You not only need to serve; you need to worship. You are too weak and frail to be the object of your ultimate trust. You are like a broken reed and cannot stand the weight of heavy faith. You must trust in something and somebody beyond yourself.”

Light in the Darkness

The light of the star that identified Jesus will never go out.

Someone has said that there is not enough darkness in the universe to put out the light of one small candle. It is true. If darkness cannot put out the light of a small candle, how helpless it is to put out the light of a star.

John in his Gospel speaks of the light in Jesus which the darkness has not put out. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5). The New Living Translation (NLT) says, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.”

Christmas Verse 12/28/2023

christmas inspiration header

Daily Prayer & Praise 12/28/2023

prayer and praise header 4
Lord, hear our prayer:

Lord, there is no God like you and there is no God other than you. You alone are the Creator and Sustainer of the whole universe. You alone are the center and source of all life. You alone are the center and source of all that is good, true, worthy and wholesome. You alone are the center and source of hope, peace, joy, fulfilment and satisfaction. We praise you, our living, loving God, that you are not remote from us, but in Christ you hid your glory and you walked in the dust of our world. You came as the Servant King to bring healing, hope and a new beginning to all who put their trust in you. For all of this we give you thanks and praise in Jesus’ name.

Amen.

Reflecting With God 12/28/2023

reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

“When He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.” – John 16:8.

No human teacher can do it; conscience cannot do it; law in none of its forms, human or divine, can do it: nay, the gospel itself cannot do it. Although the Word of God is the sword of the Spirit, yet, unless the Spirit of God draws forth that sword, it lies powerless in its sheath. Only when the Spirit of God wields it, is it quick and powerful, and sharper than a two-edged sword, piercing to the dividing asunder of the soul and spirit, a discerner of the thoughts and purposes of the heart. Therefore, as the work of convincing the world of sin is one which nothing less than the Spirit of God can effect, and which yet must be effected thoroughly, if sin is to be driven out from the world, our Saviour was mercifully pleased to send the Comforter to produce this conviction in mankind.
