Robert Hawker: Piercing Heaven – Puritan’s Prayers

Great, glorious, everlasting Redeemer! You are indeed both the high priest and the altar, both the sacrifice and the sacrificer. Your one offering has both put out the fire of divine wrath and caused the holy flame of love and peace to burn there instead, which has kindled in every heart of your people.

Lamb of God, you have delivered us from the wrath to come! You have made our peace in the blood of your cross.

By your blood you have quenched the just fire of divine indignation against sin. You have quenched no less than all the fiery darts of Satan. You have subdued the flaming antagonism of our hearts, with all their fiery lusts and burning affections.

What will I say to you? What will I say of you? What will I proclaim concerning you, the Lord our righteousness?

Lord, help me to begin the song, and never entertain sin or Satan—not even death itself, or allow it for a moment to interrupt the heavenly note.

Instead let your name fill my entire soul and vibrate on my dying lips, so that I may open my eyes in eternity, while the words still hang there.

“To him who has loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and made us kings and priests to God and the Father; to him be glory and dominion forever and ever.”

Amen.

Life In Focus 2/03/2024

New Work for a New World

DID you know that in the world to come you will have work to do, and that your work will be gratifying, fulfilling, and enduring? According to the glimpse of the future that Isaiah was given, people will build houses and cultivate vineyards (Isaiah 65:21-22), an indication that God’s new earth will be filled with meaningful activity.

This should come as a comfort to you if your present occupation seems insignificant, boring, or dissatisfying. In the world to come, you will “long enjoy the work of {your} hands” (Isaiah 65:22). That is, you will see the results of what you accomplish and enjoy the benefits of your efforts. You will not “labor in vain” (Isaiah 65:23) the way so many workers do now. Isaiah’s vision has reference to this world as it was originally created. It was “very good” in God’s estimation (Genesis 1:31), and the work of the world was good” as well. In His new world, God will restore work to its original purpose.

In the meantime, we can serve God as His coworkers, using the abilities and resources that He has given us to wisely manage this earth and meet the needs of people. We can also anticipate our future with God by walking with Him through life and learning what He has in store for us. And we can share our future hope with others, encouraging them to place their lives and future in the loving hands of Christ.

They Walked With Him: The Seventy

thought of day header

Saturday February 3, 2024

Luke 10:20
“Do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you,
but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

We know about the twelve apostles, but Jesus had seventy other disciples who walked with Him and whom He sent on a ministry tour in Luke 10. In verse 17, these seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” Jesus acknowledged their success but gave a gentle warning. Their joy should be based on more than their perceived success; it should rest in the simple fact that their names were written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

Ministry is a difficult task, the results of which are not always immediate or obvious. If we base our morale on visible success, we may become proud of our accomplishments or discouraged over momentary setbacks or prolonged struggles. Whatever we’re doing for the Lord, however great or small, the Lord expects us to be faithful regardless of the setting and outcome—and to rejoice in one thing above all: our names are written in heaven!

All believers are through grace . . . enrolled among His family;
now this is a matter of joy, greater joy than casting out devils.

Food For Thought 2/03/2024

Go and Cash It!

Roy McClain tells of a beggar who stopped a lawyer on the street in a large southern city and asked him for a quarter. Taking a long, hard look into the man’s unshaven face, the attorney asked. “Don’t I know you from somewhere?” “You should,” came the reply. “I’m your former classmate. Remember, second floor, old Main Hall?”

“Why, Sam, of course I know you!” Without further question the lawyer wrote a check for $100. “Here, take this and get a new start. I don’t care what’s happened in the past, it’s the future that counts.” And with that he hurried on.

Tears welled up in the man’s eyes as he walked to a bank nearby. Stopping at the door, he saw through the glass the well-dressed tellers and the spotlessly clean interior. Then he looked at his filthy rags. “They won’t take this from me. They’ll swear that I forged it,” he muttered as he turned away.

The next day the two men met again. “Why Sam, what did you do with my check? Gamble it away? Drink it up?” “No,” said the beggar as he pulled it out of his dirty shirt pocket and told why he hadn’t cashed it. “Listen, friend,” said the lawyer. “What makes that check good is not your clothes or appearance, but my signature. Go on, cash it!”

Faith From The Beginning 2/03/2024

Standing In the Gap

THE world and professing Christendom are unaware that the only reason the hell of God’s judgment has not yet fallen upon the nations is that there is in this world today a company, a small, despised company of believers who like Abraham, walking in fellowship with the Lord, are holding back God’s awful judgment. This little company receives but scant notice in the world. It is mostly disregarded and receives little publicity in the newspapers. It is often considered extremist and fanatic because it preaches judgment and the imminent coming of the Lord to judge the world. This small company, however, still contains the most important people in all of the world’s affairs today.

Valuable Instructions of God’s Word – 3

pastor's desk header

Scripture Reference: 1 Corinthians 2:9-14

2. The Bible Is the Only Book That Gives Assurance of Salvation

Not only is the Bible the only Book that is able to make us “wise for salvation,” it is also the only Book that can let us know we are saved.

I have asked people before in conversation, “Are you sure you’re going to Heaven when you die?”

The answer is often, “Yes.”

I often then ask, “How do you know?”

“I saw a vision; I saw three crosses, God Himself told me I was good,” or something just as weird.

Someone said, “I know I’m going to Heaven because I had a certain feeling. I went to church one night and while they were singing “I’ll Fly Away,” chills ran up my spine and my hair stood on end.” Sadly, if you are a Christian already, you know that none of these things have anything to do with getting saved or getting to Heaven!

Many people in the world want their feelings, their experiences, their visions, and even their philosophy and everything else to prove to them that they are saved. Sadly though, that is not the proof of salvation. The proof is the written Word of God: “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13). It doesn’t say, “These visions have I given unto you.”

Someone might ask, “Preacher, do you know that you’re going to Heaven?”

“Yes, I do.”

“But you can’t know that. It’s presumptuous to say that you’re going to Heaven.”

“Thankfully, no, it’s not!”

“You must think you’re awfully good.”

“No, I know I’m not good. The Bible tells us that no one is good, not even one person. Therefore, I’m awfully bad.”

“Then how do you know that you’re going to Heaven?”

“I’m taking the promise that Jesus Christ, who died for all us, gave me in 1 John 5:13.”

Most people who know that they’re going to Heaven know that they’re not good, and they know that you don’t go to Heaven through goodness which is dependent on your own works and ability. They know they are going to Heaven because they have trusted Jesus Christ and what He did on the cross and that He already did all that was necessary for us to get to Heaven and God, the Father.

I know I’m going to Heaven because I have something better for the assurance of my salvation than I do for the assurance for instance, that I’m married. I don’t say, “I think I’m married; I hope I’m married; I’m working on it; I presume I’m married. I stood before someone who said I was.” I know I’m married because I have ears which heard my wife say, “I do”; I have my memory that remembers when my wife said, “I do”; and if I lose my memory, I have the preacher’s written signature on a marriage certificate, and that marriage certificate will remind me that I’m married. I have written proof and the words of my spouse that says, “I’m married.”

I’ve never met anyone who ever doubted they were married. I’ve never filled out a form that gave the choices for marital status as:

□ Married □ Separated □ Divorced □ Don’t Know

That’s how I know I have salvation, because I’ve got God’s written word in a Book called the Bible. Once again, He said, “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life” (John 3:36). If God lied about it, then there is no Heaven, no Hell, and the Bible is a lie all the way through. All those through the centuries then have been deceived with no hope. But God didn’t lie about it because He can’t lie! It’s not within His character. Therefore, I have better assurance of my salvation than I do of anything and everything else under Heaven.

Sing Praises to the Lord!

I will praise You, Lord, with all my heart;
I will tell of all the marvelous things You have done.
I will be filled with joy because of You.
I will sing praises to Your name, O Most High.
The Lord reigns forever,
The Lord is a shelter for the oppressed,
a refuge in times of trouble.
Those who know Your name trust in you,
for You, O Lord, do not abandon those who search for You.
Sing praises to the Lord who reigns.
Tell the world about His unforgettable deeds.
I will praise You, Lord, with all that I am.

Daily Prayer & Praise 2/02/2024

prayer and praise header 4
Lord, hear our prayer:

Lord, we thank you for the way the Spirit compelled your church to open its heart and mind and welcome all people, Jew and Gentile, into its fellowship. We praise you for the way that the good news has been faithfully proclaimed all around the world; for the immense variety of languages, customs and styles of worship that are used by the worldwide church of Jesus Christ. We thank you for every sign of hope, peace and reconciliation made possible in and through your church; for our place in your church and for our communion with you and with each other. We bring our thanks in the name of Christ the Lord.

Amen.

Reflecting With God 2/02/2024

reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God. – Acts 16:25.

While your salvation depends on Jesus and His finished work, and on that alone, your enjoyment of that salvation depends very much on yourself—on your holy walk with God, on your living a life within the veil—living daily by faith on Him Who loved you and gave Himself for you. Without this you may be a Christian, but you will never be a peaceful, praising, happy Christian.

Luke 22:15

thought of day header

Friday February 2, 2024

Luke 22:15
“I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.”

It is sad to think of all the believers who for one reason or another neglect the Communion Table.

There are some people who as a matter of principle do not partake of the Sacrament of the Altar. But aside from them there are not many Christians among us who openly despise our Lord’s precious Supper.

But they neglect it, nevertheless. They seldom go to Communion. Many, because they do not deem themselves worthy. Alas, what damage has not the thought of the “unworthy” communicant wrought in the church of Christ!

When we go to the Table of the Lord, only that is required which is always required when we draw near unto God: that we turn to Him in our helplessness with sincere hearts, that He may save us from our sins. This Table is a Table of grace.

Here He waits to impart, freely and without merit on our part, the riches of His grace to all poor, empty, and anxious souls. Here He waits to warm the cold-hearted, to quench the thirsty, to satisfy the hungry, to strengthen the weak hands and to confirm the feeble knees.

Whenever you come to His Table, He enters quickly and unnoticed into your soul and body and does His hidden but blessed work.

Go to the Lord’s Table therefore as often as it is set where you are present. Never sit as an on-looker when other children of God go to Communion. Go and commune and praise the Lord who gave you also this opportunity.

“Thus may we all Thy word obey,
For we, O God, are Thine;
And go rejoicing on our way,
Renewed with strength divine.”

Spiritual Nuggets 2/02/2024

spiritual nuggets header

Love, Praise, Forgiveness

Our praise for God is often directly connected to accepting and confessing our brokenness. Our capacity to love Him is tied to the realization of how much He has forgiven us.

The woman in Luke 7 who anointed Jesus’ feet is described with one phrase: She was a sinner. We’re not given clarifying detail, but we do know her sin was notorious and, as a result, she was marginalized by society. She was not only weighed down by her sin; her public identity was grounded in it, and she could not hide it. She knew that she needed to receive forgiveness from the only one who could provide it. Her necessity made her bold: She came to Simon the Pharisee’s house to wash and anoint Jesus’ feet.

Her behavior created quite a spectacle. Simon the Pharisee was quick to condemn her actions and question Jesus’ decision to show her compassion. But Jesus turned the tables on him. While the woman was aware of her brokenness—and was all the more grateful for forgiveness—Simon ran with those who had built up a charade of holiness.

Jesus told Simon, “For this reason I tell you, her sins—which were many—have been forgiven, for she loved much. But the one to whom little is forgiven loves little” (Luke 7:47).

Our praise for Jesus—the way we speak of Him and the way we speak of our sin and forgiveness—is a reflection of the state of our hearts. Because our hearts are inclined to be prideful, it’s often easier for us to defend our sin than to confess it. It’s easier to go about our religious activities while rationalizing our sin. But unless we drop the charade and confess the true state of our hearts, we’ll never honor Him as we should.

Valuable Instructions of God’s Word – 2

pastor's desk header

Scripture Reference: 1 Corinthians 2:9-14

It is not being sincere in what you believe that will get you saved; it is believing in the right thing, the truth, that will accomplish the goal.

I once read an illustration about a man who went deer hunting but didn’t get anything. Later when he was watching a big-game show on television, a big deer came across the screen, the first deer he had seen all year. He picked up his gun, sincerely thinking that he had unloaded it. He sincerely aimed it at his television set. Sincerely he believed he could pull the trigger and nothing would happen. But he sincerely blew the guts out of his television set!

You can be sincere and good all you want, but you are only going to get to Heaven one way: “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life.”

To believe on the Son simply means to trust Him, to rely on Him, to depend on Him. Here are four things about believing on Jesus:

  1. You accept as fact what the Bible states, that you “have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
  2. You also believe the Bible when it says, “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23), and so, as a sinner, you’ve earned those wages, in other words, a penalty.
  3. You believe the Bible truth about how God “gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
  4. You not only believe that Jesus died for you on the cross to pay your debt for sin, but you accept as fact that it is “by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works” (Ephesians 2:8-9). It is depending on that which will get you to Heaven.

These four things are what it means to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.

I can give mental assent that a certain chair will support me; but I’ll never enjoy the benefits of the chair holding me up until I sit on it and lift both feet off the floor. Only then do I prove that I have trust in that chair and depend on it to hold me up. Another example of faith in action would be entering a darkened room and believing that by flipping a wall switch, light will flood the room. I won’t experience that light until I flip that switch. I won’t experience Heaven until I trust totally in Jesus Christ.

You can say in your head, “There is a Christ. I believe He did die for me on the cross,” but you must go a step beyond that by putting actions to that belief and determine to absolutely, totally and unreservedly trust, depend on and rely on what Jesus did at the cross to get you to Heaven. Just like turning on a light takes action to put that belief into what you desire (a lighted room) so you must give action to what you sincerely believe concerning Christ. You must trust Him totally.

That’s as simple as I can make it, but those instructions come from one Book: the Bible. “From childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.”

Praise The Lord 2/01/2024

How Majestic Is His Name!

O Lord, our Lord, Your majestic name fills the earth!
Your glory is higher than the heavens.
When I look at the night sky and see the work of Your fingers—
the moon and the stars You set in place—
what are mere mortals that You should think about us,
human beings that You should care for us?
You gave us charge of everything You made,
putting all things under our authority—
the flocks and the herds
and all the wild animals,
the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea,
and everything that swims the ocean currents.
O Lord, our Lord, Your majestic name fills the earth!

Lord, hear our prayer:

Lord Almighty, we thank you for your coming to us in Jesus Christ, and that, through him, you have made yourself known. You have spoken to us through him in a way that we could hear and understand. We thank you for his appearing for all people of every age and every place; for the way your Spirit spoke to the Wise Men all those years ago. They represent all who do not know you and are far from you. They stand for those who long for something of which they are only dimly aware. We bring our thanks in the name of Christ the Lord.

Amen.

Reflecting With God 2/01/2024

reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

The Lord, who makes these things known from of old. – Acts 15:17-18.

And if His works were foreknown how much more His saints!. . . The source of a stream must be sought, not where it arises in some green glen among the hills, making a tiny tarn of clear water, where the mountain sheep come down to drink; but in the mighty sea, drawn upward in evaporation, or in the clouds that condense against the cold slopes of the hills. So with the life of God within us. In its earlier stages we are apt to suppose that it originated in our will and choice and return to our Father’s House. But as we review it from the eminence of the years, we discover that we chose because we were chosen; that we love because we were first loved; that we left the sepulchre of our selfishness and the cerements of death, because the Son of God flung His majestic word into the sepulchral vault, crying, “Come forth!” All mature piety extols the grace of God—that unmerited love, which each man thinks was magnified most abundantly in his own case. “By the grace of God I am what I am,” is a confession which is elicited from every man as he reaches the crest of the hill, and looks back on the cities of the plain from which he has escaped.

The Call of God

thought of day header

Thursday February 1, 2024

1 Corinthians 1:17
For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel.

Paul states here that the call of God is to preach the gospel; but remember what Paul means by “the gospel,” that is, the reality of Redemption in our Lord Jesus Christ. We are apt to make sanctification the end-all of our preaching. Paul alludes to personal experience by way of illustration, never as the end of the matter. We are nowhere commissioned to preach salvation or sanctification; we are commissioned to lift up Jesus Christ (John 12:32). It is a travesty to say that Jesus Christ travailed in Redemption to make me a saint. Jesus Christ travailed in Redemption to redeem the whole world, and place it unimpaired and rehabilitated before the throne of God. The fact that Redemption can be experienced by us is an illustration of the power of the reality of Redemption, but that is not the end of Redemption. If God were human, how sick to the heart and weary He would be of the constant requests we make for our salvation, for our sanctification. We tax His energies from morning till night for things for ourselves—something for me to be delivered from! When we touch the bedrock of the reality of the Gospel of God, we shall never bother God any further with little personal plaints.

The one passion of Paul’s life was to proclaim the Gospel of God. He welcomed heart-breaks, disillusionments, tribulation, for one reason only, because these things kept him in unmoved devotion to the Gospel of God.

Borrowed Imagery

In the Old Testament, Yahweh regularly explains Himself by using imagery familiar to the time. Sometimes Yahweh even uses images associated with other gods to emphasize that He—and not the gods of other nations—has authority over the earth. This poetic exchange would have served as an intercultural dialogue between the Israelites and their neighbors. A classic example is the image of the rider upon the clouds: “Look! Yahweh is riding on a swift cloud and is coming to Egypt. And the idols of Egypt will tremble in front of him, and the heart of Egypt melts in his inner parts” (Isaiah 19:1).

Here, the prophet borrows a metaphor usually associated with the god Baal (from Ugaritic literature) to demonstrate Yahweh’s superiority over Baal: Yahweh arrives in Egypt in greater glory than that of the god feared by Egypt’s (and Israel’s) Canaanite neighbor. Because Egypt has oppressed Yahweh’s people, Yahweh will withhold the rains—a decision that Baal, the god of rain, was notorious for making (see Isaiah 19:5-8).

The writer goes on:

“And I will stir up Egyptians against Egyptians, and each one will fight against his brother and each one against his neighbor, city against city, kingdom against kingdom. And the spirit of the Egyptians will be disturbed in his midst, and I will confuse his plans, and they will consult the idols and the spirits of the dead, and the ghosts and the spiritists” (Isaiah 19:2-3).

The threat of violence in this passage may be intimidating, but believers can find hope in it. We take comfort in seeing that Yahweh intercedes for His people. We find joy in knowing that He loves people enough to explain Himself in ways they can understand, using whatever metaphor best reveals His power and glory. On all accounts, He is God of justice.

Valuable Instructions of God’s Word – 1

pastor's desk header

Scripture Reference: 1 Corinthians 2:9-14

In this lesson I want to give you five important applications of the Word of God. Since it is His verbally inspired revelation, it is the best source we have to showcase the five needs I’m going to list.

The Bible says:

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Thirty-five times in Psalm 119 we read “your word.” Look at just three of those verses:

“How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word” (verse 9).

“I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you” (verse 11).

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (verse 105).

The Bible is the Word of God.

1. The Bible Is the Only Book That Tells How One Can Be Saved

The first application for which only the Bible is sufficient is in salvation, to be born again, simply put, how to be saved.

“From childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:15).

There is no other book but the Bible that can tell one how to go to Heaven. Good gospel tracts and other literature show the way to Heaven, but only because they contain portions of the Bible.

The Bible alone is able to “make you wise for salvation,” and any hope of salvation apart from the Bible is absolutely and utterly futile.

Some people say, “Well, my opinion is . . .” Never mind your opinion. In this lesson I’m going to give you what the Bible says, not mine or anyone else’s opinion.

Someone else might say, “But I know a fellow who believes . . .” It doesn’t matter what that fellow believes. He may have enough degrees to make him look like a thermometer, but he is not smarter than God!

Only in the Bible can anyone find how to be saved and how to go to Heaven. I give part of it here briefly: “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life” (John 3:36). “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). Notice that each one of these verses, doesn’t say maybe. Rather they are emphatic. You will have eternal life and you will be saved.

Yet someone might argue, “But there are a lot of different religions. As long as a man is sincere in what he believes, and lives a good life, he’ll go to Heaven.” Don’t be fooled. You are wrong! The Bible doesn’t say that, or even hint at it; but it does say, “Whoever does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16). The King James Version comes right out and says they “shall be damned.” There’s no sugar-coating the truth in any version.

Your logic about being sincere, doing good, and then going to Heaven will not hold water. If I leave here today and head in the opposite direction of my home, even if I am sincere in believing that my house has been moved over in that direction, I will never get home. I will have to change my mind and direction in order to arrive at my destination. Sincerity doesn’t always equal truth.

Praise The Lord 1/31/2024

Our Shield of Love

You, O Lord, are a shield around us;
You are our glory, the One who holds our head high.
We cry out to the Lord,
and He answers us from His holy mountain.
We lay down and sleep,
yet we wake up in safety,
for You O Lord are watching over us.
Victory comes from You alone, O Lord.
May You continue to bless Your people.

You can be sure of this:
The Lord set apart the godly for Himself.
The Lord will always answer when we call to Him.
Let Your face smile on us, Lord.
You have given us greater joy
than those who have great abundance.
In peace we will lie down and sleep,
for You alone, O Lord, will keep us safe.

Because of Your unfailing love, we can enter Your house;
We will worship at Your Temple with deepest awe.
Lead us in the right path, O Lord.
Let all who take refuge in You rejoice;
let us sing joyful praises to You forever.
Spread Your protection over us,
that all who love Your name may be filled with joy.
For You bless the godly, O Lord;
You alone surround us with Your Shield of Love.

Daily Prayer & Praise 1/31/2024

prayer and praise header 4
Lord, hear our prayer:

Holy and gracious Father, we praise you for Jesus Christ through whom we have become your children. It is Christ who taught us to call you our Father and to trust in your fatherly goodness. We praise you for his life, death and resurrection and that through him the way has been opened to the heaven of your love. We praise you for the gift of your Holy Spirit, who empowers us for worship and enables us to commit our lives to your service and to journey with you to the end, and beyond. We bring our praises in the name of Christ our Lord.

Amen.
