Centuries of Meditations – First Century

71

But what life wouldst thou lead? And by what laws wouldst thou thyself be guided? For none are so miserable as the lawless and disobedient. Laws are the rules of blessed living. Thou must therefore be guided by some laws. What wouldst thou choose? Surely since thy nature and God’s are so excellent, the Laws of Blessedness, and the Laws of Nature are the most pleasing. God loved thee with an infinite love, and became by doing so thine infinite treasure. Thou art the end unto whom He liveth. For all the lines of His works and counsels end in thee, and in thy advancement. Wilt not thou become to Him an infinite treasure, by loving Him according to His desert? It is impossible but to love Him that loveth. Love is so amiable that it is irresistible. There is no defense against that arrow, nor any deliverance in that war, nor any safeguard from that charm. Wilt thou not live unto Him? Thou must of necessity live unto something. And what so glorious as His infinite Love? Since therefore, laws are requisite to lead thee, what laws can thy soul desire, than those that guide thee in the most amiable paths to the highest end? By Love alone is God enjoyed, by Love alone delighted in, by Love alone approached or admired. His Nature requires Love, thy nature requires Love. The law of Nature commands thee to Love Him: the Law of His nature, and the Law of thine.

Thomas Traherne (1637 – September 27, 1674) was an English poet, Anglican cleric, theologian, and religious writer. Traherne’s writings frequently explore the glory of creation and what he saw as his intimate relationship with God. The work for which Traherne is best known today is the Centuries of Meditations, a collection of short paragraphs in which he reflects on Christian life and ministry, philosophy, happiness, desire and childhood. This was first published in 1908 after having been rediscovered in manuscript ten years earlier. Before its rediscovery this manuscript was said to have been lost for almost two hundred years and is now considered a much loved devotional.

Anecdotal Story 2/11/2024

anecdotal stories

For a Dollar More

Scripture References: 1 Samuel 11:1; James 3:5

Heinrich Friedrich Albert came to New York in 1915 ostensibly as a financial advisor to the German ambassador, Count Johanann von Bernstorff. His real purpose, however, as a spy for the Kaiser, was to keep America neutral by judiciously scattering forty million dollars on sabotage and propaganda. Personal thriftiness led to his failure. He took the nickel Sixth Avenue El to his hotel instead of a taxi, which would have cost $1.25. As he hurriedly left the El that fateful day, July 24, 1915, he thoughtlessly left behind a suitcase containing information on his vast network of contacts. The U.S. Secret Service snatched the suitcase and exposed its contents.

A small mistake, but it was disastrous for Germany. Eve made a similarly small decision in Eden, taking Satan at his word when he promised that she would not die, despite God’s warning that she would. But that is the nature of sin: it hardens us to its deceitful nature. It makes disobedience harmless and virtue treacherous. When God later queried her, she admitted, “The serpent deceived me.” She didn’t know when she ate the fruit that she would get shame, not wisdom; and knowledge, but at the cost of horrible guilt. Satan knows how to exploit our many small weaknesses in an effort to minimize our few great strengths.

It Is Finished – 6

pastor's desk header

Scripture Reference: John 19:28-30

2. Jesus Addressed “It is Finished” to Satan – Continued

From Last Lesson: Dear believer, remember that Jesus quoted Scripture, too. He proved to the enemy and to all that it is not merely a matter of the words of Scripture but of their sense and meaning. Jesus, through His Holy Spirit has to this very day established the true sense of Scripture in its bearing upon what He as the Messiah came to do. Jesus established the kingdom of truth and of righteousness against the kingdom of the lie and of unrighteousness. Jesus has exposed the enemy for the arch-liar that he is.

Think of this dear reader, for three years the enemy had watched Jesus through His earthly ministry and not once could he convict Jesus of any sin. Jesus came to die so that the sins of all people could be blotted out. The devil must surely know by now  and understand that his certain destruction is not only at hand, but sealed that day on the cross.

Did the enemy think he was successful when he instigated Pilate to say, “What is truth?” Satan now knows, as never before, that Jesus, the “I am” of God, is the Way, the Truth and the Life, and that neither he nor any of his followers can speak a final or lasting word against the truth.

If you, the believer, can meditate or try to contemplate, consider what an unspeakably horrible existence the devil will have after this. It will be impossible, from the point of the cross forward for Satan, to deceive himself the way he had done until that point. The devil does know he is already defeated. He knows now that all the powers of hell, of which he is commander in chief, can’t prevail against the Kingdom of Heaven which Jesus Christ has established. He certainly knows all this now, and from the point of the cross until he is thrown into the abyss, he will always tremble, realizing his time is so limited.

As believers, we must remember that his fury against the people of Christ Jesus will increase. It will be a desperate fury. Yet because of the cross and the resurrection, God’s people will always be safe. Believing martyrs will be without fear even as they are burned at the stake. When the enemy sees them at the stake, they and the enemy’s hosts will tremble all the more. The devil’s minions may have them “stoned, . . . sawn in two, . . . killed with the sword. [Going] about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated . . . wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth” (Hebrews 11:37) but the enemy will never, no never, succeed in bringing them down to destruction with himself. When Satan heard Jesus say, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me” (Matthew 27:46), this was in order that those whom the Father has given Jesus might always know they will never be forsaken of Him. I can just imagine Jesus saying, “Get behind me, Satan and beware not to touch those for whom I have died, for it won’t be them, but rather you and your followers who are forever forsaken of God!”

Saturday Prayer & Praise 2/10/2024

Robert Hawker: Piercing Heaven – Puritan’s Prayers

Lord Jesus, I seek you and your favor beyond all the riches of the earth, and all the enjoyments of the world.

Lord, help me never to forget that it was your favor that brought you down from heaven. Your favor that prompted you to die, to rise again, for poor sinners. Your favor which makes you wash us from all our sins in your blood.

All of your grace here, all the glories of redemption hereafter—everything was bought and the result of your favor.

Precious Lord, please show me your renewed favor, day by day. And let those visits from you be so gracious, so sweet, and so continual, that I may think or speak of nothing else.

I pray for grace to spend all the moments of my life here, receiving your grace and love, and bringing you love and praise, until you take me home to live at the fountain of your favor. That is when the whole happiness of eternity will be in the praises of God and of the Lamb, and we will enjoy “the favor of him who dwelt in the bush.”

Amen.

Life In Focus 2/10/2024

Evangelism Through Repentance

JEREMIAH’S third chapter is a call for the nation of Judah to turn away from idols. In verses 9-13, the people are described as:

  • committing spiritual harlotry and adultery;
  • being treacherous;
  • backsliding;
  • transgressing against the Lord; and
  • disobeying the Lord’s voice.

Yet despite these sins, God extended an invitation to the nation to be reconciled to Him, and to find mercy and healing. The way back was through confession of and repentance from sin, and a wholehearted return to the Lord (Jeremiah 3:13, 22).

In the middle of this call to repent, the Lord also revealed His heart for the other nations of the world. First, Israel would return to Him, and then all nations would be gathered around His name at Jerusalem (Jeremiah 3:17). People from all over the world would serve Him rather than following “their own evil heart.”

God’s offer of hope and salvation still extends to everyone on earth. As before, His primary strategy for drawing nations to Himself is through His people. In light of Judah’s history, believers today do well to consider whether their sins may be keeping others away from the Lord. Is there a need for repentance and spiritual renewal among God’s people before evangelism can take place in any major way?

Barefoot Christians

thought of day header

Saturday February 10, 2024

Ephesians 6:15
[Stand,] and, as shoes for your feet, having put on
the readiness given by the gospel of peace.

Soldiers in antiquity sometimes faced a frightening prospect. Their enemies would set spikes into the ground that would slice open a soldier’s foot like a razor. Roman forces, therefore, wore sturdy boots called caligae, which were less likely to be punctured.

It won’t do to be a barefoot Christian. We must be shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace. Our feet, in the Scriptures, are symbols of going. Both Isaiah and Paul speak of the beautiful feet of those bearing good tidings. Jesus told us to go into all the world with the good news of Jesus Christ.

There is a certain safety when we’re shod with evangelistic zeal. When we’re determined to share Christ, our feet are, as it were, protected from many of the spikes the devil plants in our pathway. Every problem becomes a pulpit, and every sorrow becomes a sermon. Whatever the devil throws at us becomes an occasion to witness for Christ. Paul told the Philippians, “I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel” (Philippians 1:12).

Don’t go barefoot into battle. Fit your feet with the gospel of peace.

The Gospel of peace . . . brings the joyful tidings of peace betwixt God and man
by the blood of Jesus; and this is so welcome to the trembling conscience.

Food For Thought 2/10/2024

Spurgeon’s Joyful Experience

When Spurgeon was riding home one evening after a heavy day’s work and feeling very wearied and depressed, the verse—”My grace is sufficient for thee” came to him. He immediately compared himself to a little fish in the Thames, apprehensive lest, drinking so many pints of water in the river each day, it might drink the Thames dry, and hearing Father Thames say to it, “Drink away, little fish, my stream is sufficient for thee.”

Then he thought of a little mouse in the granaries of Joseph in Egypt, afraid lest it might—by daily consumption of the corn it needed—exhaust the supplies and starve to death; when Joseph came along and, sensing its fear, said, “Cheer up, little mouse, my granaries are sufficient for thee.”

Or again, he thought of himself as a man climbing some high mountain to reach its lofty summit, and dreading lest he might exhaust all the oxygen in the atmosphere, when the Creator Himself said, “Breathe away, O man, and fill thy lungs ever; my atmosphere is sufficient for thee.”

“Then,” he told his congregation, “for the first time in my life, I experienced what Abraham felt when he fell upon his face and laughed.” Joyful experience.

Faith From The Beginning 2/10/2024

Salt of the Earth

JESUS said of this company of believers, “You are the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13). Yes, indeed, God’s people are the salt of the earth. Salt retards corruption. Salt will not prevent corruption from setting in eventually, but it retards it and delays it. So, too, the presence in the world today of a company of believers called “the salt of the earth” is the only reason God has not yet visited this world with catastrophe and judgment. Man is frantic in his fear of world catastrophe in this atomic age with all sorts of strange signs in the heavens. He has set up organizations and committees and associations and alliances; he has spent billions for defense, and signed pacts and agreements in an effort to avert the atomic end of the world. But more important, yes, all important in holding back the judgment of God is this other company, this little company, the “salt of the earth.”

It Is Finished – 5

pastor's desk header

Scripture Reference: John 19:28-30

2. Jesus Addressed “It is Finished” to Satan

I sometimes wonder if Satan ever thought, in his pride and arrogance, that he was really victorious when, at the beginning of history, Adam and Eve fell for his temptation? He should have known better when he had to have overheard the promise given to Adam and Eve:

“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel” (Genesis 3:15).

Well, we are all the seed of the woman. Through all of his maneuverings he has only bruised our heel. Through his servants, the leaders of the Jews, he “succeeded,” to have Jesus crucified. But this very seemingly success of his spelled doomed and utter and final defeat for his plans.

God’s righteous love has now prevailed on earth. The devil is the great deceiver of men but he has, in the final analysis, only deceived himself.

I wonder if he thought he was successful when he instilled hatred into Cain’s heart so that he murdered his brother Abel? Well, the truth is, he wasn’t a success at all. Cain, not Abel, failed and the devil failed with Cain. On the cross, Jesus has taken vengeance on the enemy of our souls for the blood of Abel.

I also wonder if he thought he was successful when he wiped out the line of separation between the descendants of Seth and the descendants of Cain? Did he rejoice and rub his hands in glee when he heard God, the Almighty Creator say of man that “every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (Genesis 6:5) and “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land . . . for I am sorry that I have made them” (Genesis 6:7)? Did he laugh at Noah when Noah alone preached righteousness among men? Well, it was Christ who witnessed through Noah; it was Christ who prophesied judgment upon unrighteous men. It is Christ who this very day is sending the enemy to the bottomless pit for all his unrighteous instigation of men to rebellion against God Almighty.

Did Satan think that he had succeeded when Abraham, the father of the faithful, failed to trust the promise of God and took the fulfillment of those promises into his own hands? Well, brothers and sisters,  Christ, the great “I Am” is the promised seed of Abraham. Through Christ alone shall the nations of the world be blessed.

When Jesus began His ministry, let’s remember that Jesus and the devil had a person to person confrontation in the wilderness. The enemy sought to persuade Jesus to wipe out the line of distinction between His kingdom and the devil’s kingdom with seemingly “pious” appeal to Scripture.

However, dear believer, remember that Jesus quoted Scripture, too.

Daily Prayer & Praise 2/09/2024

prayer and praise header 4
Lord, hear our prayer:

Father, we thank you for those who have stood by us when we were hurting and loved us even when we were in the wrong. We praise you for men and women who share the plight of those less fortunate than themselves; for those who work for the good of their neighbor; for those who go the extra mile and turn the other cheek; for those who do all they can to make others feel accepted and valued. We thank you for those who make no pretense of greatness or superiority, but stand alongside their neighbor – no matter the cost; for those whose gracious words and caring deeds enable others to have self-respect and hope. Thank you for every opportunity to love our neighbor and be representatives of your almighty, humble, holy love. In the name of Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Reflecting With God 2/09/2024

reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

Suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. – Romans 5:3-5.

God is daily searching us, sifting us, trying us to bring out the evil that is in us, that we may know ourselves, and that He may have fresh opportunities of bringing out all His supplies and resources. He brings us, as He did Israel, into danger, poverty, sorrow, and care that He may get opportunities of displaying all His love and fullness. Let us not grudge Him these; they will soon be at an end. It is only here, on this sad, poor earth, that He can have such opportunities. When we reach the Kingdom, our sin and emptiness, and weakness, and grief will be done. It is only now and here that God can thus display Himself in His grace, and long-suffering and plenteousness.

Matthew 13:30

thought of day header

Friday February 9, 2024

Matthew 13:30
“Let both grow together until the harvest.”

There is a peculiar note of sadness in this parable of the wheat and the tares.

With a few powerful strokes Jesus portrays the disappointments to which His great work of saving souls is subject here in this world, and will be to the very end of time. The field is the world. He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The good seed means the children of the kingdom. The tares are the children of the evil one. The enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the world.

A mighty drama!

When the servants saw the havoc that had been wrought, they wanted to proceed at once to gather up the tares. But the householder said: “No, for then you will damage the wheat also. Let them grow together until the harvest.”

Indeed! The disciples of Jesus no doubt often felt a desire to do away with the worst enemies of the kingdom. When the Samaritans closed their city and their homes to Jesus, James and John asked for permission to bid fire come down from heaven to consume these sinful people. But Jesus said: “Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are. For the Son of man came not to destroy people but to save them.”

It is possible for us also to observe how the enemies of God blaspheme the Lord and lead people astray in large numbers, until we too wish that God would strike them down.

But then He dismisses us with these words: “I am not come to destroy people. Let them stand until the harvest. And pray for them, that they might be saved. They, too, have an immortal soul for which I have died.”

However, He does take note of our inner distress and comforts us by saying: There is a time coming when I shall put all my enemies under my feet, when every knee shall bow, when none shall tempt another person any more.

Lord, we await Thy day!

Spiritual Nuggets 2/09/2024

Lethal Planning

I’m a planner. I love schedules. The trouble is I sometimes make plans without consulting God. While I often think of this as a modern problem, I’ve discovered that, like many other modern issues, the Bible regularly addresses it. For example, in Isaiah 30:1 Yahweh declares, “Oh rebellious children! . . . to make a plan, but not from me, and pour out a libation, but not from my Spirit, so as to add sin to sin.”

Apparently, God’s people had been offering libations—a type of drink offering—in the ways of the Egyptians rather than in the ways of Yahweh. We make the same mistake in our lives. We seek wisdom in books or from people before consulting Yahweh. We ask our colleagues what they think before turning to our God. We look to our parents or friends instead of waiting patiently on God’s resolve. We look to our own strength or influence instead of relying on the God who created us.

In our demeanor toward God, we are so much like Israel relying on Egypt—we look to others and to ourselves for salvation rather than to God. We have removed the miraculous from our faith. Instead of asserting that God will change the course of history, we determine that we will do it. Although God certainly uses us in this work, salvation doesn’t come from our efforts—it comes from Yahweh. Rather than seeking to align our already formed plans with God’s, we must approach Him with an open mind and a willing heart. We must find the answers we seek in Him.

It Is Finished – 4

pastor's desk header

Scripture Reference: John 19:28-30

1. Jesus Addresses the Father – Continued

From Last Lesson: Jesus knows He must go the way He is heading; He will continue on; it is the only way, not only by the will of the Father but as well by His own will.

But now, all of a sudden, the reality of it all seems to overwhelms Him. All the tempests of God’s wrath now overwhelm Him as He hangs on that cross breathing His last breaths. He descends into hell, for what else is hell than to be forsaken of God. Other men enter upon hell as sinners; they know they deserve to be forsaken of God. They have an evil conscience, at the last they affirm the holiness of God; in hell they gnash and grind their teeth at the holy God more than ever for His very holiness, justice and love. But Jesus has no evil conscience. How then could the Father send Him into hell.

Spontaneously He grasps for the words He Himself by His Spirit inspired the Psalmist to write in the twenty-second psalm, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Psalm 22:1). You can imagine Himself thinking, “Haven’t I kept every jot and every tittle of the law? Doesn’t he who keeps the whole law, by loving God above all and his fellowman as himself, deserve eternal life in Your presence? Yet now, You are casting Me into eternal death!” Any other human being would be thinking those thoughts. Yet Jesus is not like every other human man.

“Get behind Me, Satan. I am not forsaken of My Father for Myself; I am forsaken of the Father for the sake those who deserve to be forsaken. I am forsaken of My Father for them whom the Father Himself has given Me. Satan, you are no longer a hindrance to Me!”

But imagine if you can, that it is then the full reality of God’s forsaking Him was upon Him. The curse of God comes down upon Him from the offended love of the Father. So He cries out: “My God, my God,” not “My Father, my Father.” He no longer sees the smiling face of the Father, or even feels His presence. . . . “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

Why? Because only at that moment could He save His people from their sins and only by doing this could He “glorify” the Father on earth. The holy God required this way; there was no other way.

Now, in that instant, all this agony is over. It is finished. No other human being, clutched in the agonies of death and then suddenly and unexpectedly delivered from death, even spoke words with such depth of meaning before. It was as if He were stating, “Father, I have kept My covenant with You.” Now we must remember His previous discourse with His disciples:

When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” (John 17:1-3).

Daily Prayer & Praise 2/08/2024

prayer and praise header 4
Lord, hear our prayer:

Father, we thank you that we can come to be set free from anything and everything that makes us like slaves and from anything and everything that fills us with fear. We praise you for your offer to set us free from all our negative attitudes, from our broken promises and from all our good intentions that came to nothing. We worship you for setting us free from all that fills us with a sense of guilt and from those things that make us ashamed; for the knowledge that we are your children, not by right but by grace alone. We bring our thanks in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Amen.

We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. – Romans 5:1.

Avaunt, Satan! While I am at peace with God, I am a match for all thy temptations. Thou offers me silver; I have gold. Thou brings before me the riches of the earth; I have something more substantial than these. Avaunt, tempter of human kind! Avaunt, thou fiend! Instantaneous and Insistent Sanctification

thought of day header

Thursday February 8, 2024

1 Thessalonians 5:23
Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely.

When we pray to be sanctified, are we prepared to face the standard of these verses? We take the term sanctification much too lightly. Are we prepared for what sanctification will cost? It will cost an intense narrowing of all our interests on earth, and an immense broadening of all our interests in God. Sanctification means intense concentration on God’s point of view. It means every power of body, soul and spirit chained and kept for God’s purpose only. Are we prepared for God to do in us all that He separated us for? And then after His work is done in us, are we prepared to separate ourselves to God even as Jesus did? “For their sakes I sanctify Myself.” The reason some of us have not entered into the experience of sanctification is that we have not realized the meaning of sanctification from God’s standpoint. Sanctification means being made one with Jesus so that the disposition that ruled Him will rule us. Are we prepared for what that will cost? It will cost everything that is not of God in us.

Are we prepared to be caught up into the swing of this prayer of the apostle Paul’s? Are we prepared to say—‘Lord make me as holy as You can make a sinner saved by grace’? Jesus has prayed that we might be one with Him as He is one with the Father. The one and only characteristic of the Holy Ghost in a man is a strong family likeness to Jesus Christ, and freedom from everything that is unlike Him. Are we prepared to set ourselves apart for the Holy Spirit’s ministrations in us?

Being Busy

Sometimes it’s difficult to deal with quiet. For most people, chaos, deadlines, managing multiple schedules, and being “so busy” are a way of life. And if we’re honest with ourselves, we like it. Busyness implies we are special and valued and the work we’re doing is necessary. And we have a desperate need to be valued.

When others failed to recognize Martha’s work—when Mary didn’t hold to the same values—she complained to Jesus. He responded by rebuking her:

“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things! But few things are necessary, or only one thing, for Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41-42).

What is the “better part”? Mary “sat at the feet of Jesus and was listening to his teaching” (Luke 10:39), and Jesus praised her desire to listen and learn. Mary was captivated by the “one thing” that would change the world: Jesus and the kingdom He was ushering in. Jesus showed Martha that she should also give Him this reception—being willing to learn, not anxious about her busy schedule. He asked her to shift her perspective.

Choosing the “better part” doesn’t invalidate the things we’re busy with; indeed, Martha’s work served the needs of others. But the things we do shouldn’t shape our identity. The “one thing” that should shape our identity—the one thing we really need—is Jesus. Ultimately, it’s the desire to know Him and serve Him that should shape our lives. And whatever is not dedicated to that service is not among “the few things [that] are necessary.”

It Is Finished – 3

Scripture Reference: John 19:28-30

1. Jesus Addresses the Father – Continued

From Last Lesson: Suddenly, a horror of darkness unspeakably greater even than that of Gethsemane, overwhelms Him. As the darkness of a cave blots out the light of the sun, so the darkness of Jesus taking on the sins of the whole world blots out the smile of the Father.

He knew that in the counsels of eternity He had made covenant with the Father and the Spirit to the effect that for the saving of His people he must be forsaken by His Father.

He knew that Moses and the prophets had spoken of this hour. He knew that He was to be the suffering servant of Jehovah:

“Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:4-6).

Jesus knew that the ceremony of the great day of atonement, when the High Priest laid the sin of all the people upon a he-goat, to be led into the desert never to return, it was a shadow of what He now must do for sinners who deserved to be sent away from Him forever.

Jesus not only knew all that during His life but went toward its realization quite of His own will. No doubt He was tempted to not walk this way. As the time drew near He spoke often to His disciples of His suffering that He must accomplish at Jerusalem and as He did so His disciples sometimes saw amazement on His face, such amazement as had never been seen on the face of any other man condemned to die by crucifixion. He alone, though sinless Himself, knew the depth of the heinousness of mankind’s sinfulness, for He alone knew the holiness of the Father, being One with the Father.

You can imagine His prayer, “but, Father, is there not some other way?” No, He tells Himself. The only other way would be the way of Satan, the way that Satan had suggested in the wilderness, the way of receiving without being forsaken of God for His people. If He followed that other way then the voice of the seraphim that Isaiah had heard, “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” (Isaiah 6:3) would fall silent. If he followed that other way, the powers of hell would enslave all mankind to everlasting doom, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth. “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me” (Matthew 16:23), was His answer whenever that other way presented itself as a temptation to His mind. “My Father, . . . your will be done” (Matthew 26:42). Those are the last words we hear from Jesus’ lips on this subject.

Jesus knows He must go the way He is heading; He will continue on; it is the only way, not only by the will of the Father but as well by His own will.

To Be Continued

Daily Prayer & Praise 2/07/2024

prayer and praise header 4
Lord, hear our prayer:

Father, we thank you that we can come to you in the knowledge that we are not only loved, but that there is no one who will love us more. We come with a sense of gratitude that wells up within us and overflows in thankfulness and joy. We thank you that we can come as we are; that we can come without any need to persuade you to love us; that we can come knowing that we are already accepted; that we can come at all. We bring our thanks in the name of our redeemer, Jesus Christ.

Amen.
