Looking to God and Others

We have a natural tendency to be concerned with our own condition. As redeemed people, God is transforming us from being self-centered people—concerned with our own ambitions—to other-centered people who want to see God’s work done in and around us. Sometimes even our spiritual concerns point us inward. But God’s work in us shouldn’t be just about us.

Paul sets a startling example in his concern for those who hadn’t come to know Christ:

“I am telling the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears witness to me in the Holy Spirit—that my grief is great and there is constant distress in my heart. For I could wish myself to be accursed from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my fellow countrymen according to the flesh” (Romans 9:1-3).

Although he was called especially to be an apostle to the Gentiles, Paul was deeply concerned about the spiritual state of the Jewish people—his own people. The promise of the Messiah was given to them, yet many refused to believe the fulfillment of this promise, the redeeming work of Christ. They weren’t aware of the fulfillment of that promise given especially to them. Paul was so grieved by their rejection of their salvation that he was willing to be accursed for their sakes.

God is at work in us—transforming us for His purpose. We should be keenly aware of His work. But our gaze shouldn’t be fixed inward. We should be looking to God, amazed by His grace and His concern for people like us. As we are changed into His likeness, we should be caught up in caring for the things that deeply concern Him. We should care about the people He wants to be transformed to His likeness. He is molding and shaping us into His likeness so that we can be His instruments, His agents on earth. The people we meet and the situations we encounter are all opportunities to reflect Christ—not because we want to be holy examples, but because we have a task to do.

Daily Prayer & Praise 8/05/2024

prayer and praise header 4
Lord, hear our prayer:

Lord, gracious and merciful, we praise you for you deserve our praise and our thanks. We thank you for your promise to be with us always, and we praise you for the hope that Jesus makes possible. Father, forgive us for not showing love to each other; for our failure to help those in need; for the foolishness that spoils our lives. Forgive us, and fill us with the love of Jesus. In his name.

Amen.

Reflecting With God 8/05/2024

reflecting with God header 2
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

Bearing fruit in every good work. – Colossians 1:10.
Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer. – Ephesians 6:18.

Labor is of noble birth; but prayer is the daughter of heaven. Labor has a place near the throne, but prayer touches the golden scepter. Labor, Martha-like, is busy with much serving; but prayer sits with Mary at the feet of Jesus. Labor climbs the mountain-peak with Moses; but prayer soars upward, with Elijah, in. a chariot of fire. Labor has the raven’s wing, yet sometimes goes forth in vain; but prayer has the pinions of the dove, and never returns but with the olive-leaf of blessing!

To Confirm and Verify

thought of day header

Monday August 5, 2024

Matthew 12:24
Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, “This fellow does not cast out
Demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.”

The Holy Spirit is also among us to confirm to the consciences of men the works of Jesus.

There was no denying that in His earthly ministry, Jesus was a mighty worker of miracles. He did raise the dead. He did cleanse the leper. He did turn the water into wine. He did feed the multitude with a few pieces of bread.

The Pharisees did not try to deny the miracles He wrought. They could not deny them—for the man who was blind only moments before was now walking among them, with full vision. You cannot deny a fact that stands and stares you in the face—a fact that you can touch and feel and push around and investigate! The Pharisees simply said: “He does his work in the power of the devil.”

The Holy Spirit came that He might confirm and verify the divine quality of those mighty works of Jesus and prove Him indeed to be the very God who had made the world and who could make it do what He pleased for it to do.

The Rechabite Saga

We’re often slow to learn and quick to speak. We think we know God’s ways, but He can easily prove us wrong. Many of us have made this mistake: We think we’re living righteously, and then God slams us for our actions. He quickly deconstructs our worldview, calling into question our ethics, our way of being, our lifestyles. Why? Because even if we don’t think we’re breaking any rules, we might be living by our own choices rather than Yahweh’s will—and that is disobedience. The story of the Rechabites demonstrates this point.

Yahweh had requested that the Rechabites shun alcohol and live in tents, so they did. They obeyed this request until Nebuchadnezzar invaded Judah, which they inhabited with the rest of God’s people. Then Yahweh sent them one final test: He asked His prophet, Jeremiah, to prompt them to drink wine. They resisted—and passed the test (Jeremiah 35:1-11).

The Rechabites’ obedience stands as a model that shows the actions of the rest of God’s people reprehensible by comparison. Yahweh remarks to Jeremiah:

“Go and say to the people of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, ‘Can you not learn a lesson to listen to my words?’ declares Yahweh. ‘The words of Jonadab, the son of Rechab, that he commanded his descendants to not drink, have been carried out, and they have not drunk until this day, for they have obeyed the command of their ancestor. But I have spoken to you over and over again, and you have not listened to me’ ” (Jeremiah 35:13-14).

God’s people had disobeyed Him by seeking other gods and committing other sins, but this line hints at the deeper problem: They had not carried out Yahweh’s basic commandment to listen to His will.

God’s people thought they were in the right. They believed they were behaving correctly. But in reality, they had disobeyed His basic commandments and then disobeyed His very will. Are you, like God’s people, living in disillusionment, failing to acknowledge that you’re living outside of God’s will?

Prayer & Praise 8/04/2024

prayer and praise header 3
Robert Hawker: Piercing Heaven – Puritan’s Prayers

Dearest Jesus, you are my hiding place. I ask for grace to see you. Surely, from everlasting, in you and in your righteousness, all your redeemed were hidden in peace and salvation.

And when we were called and quickened by grace, what could keep us alive, or preserve our spark from being snuffed out? Only by having our lives hidden with Christ in God.

Yes, blessed Jesus, you are the one who has carried me, as you have said, on eagles’ wings, and brought me to yourself. I know that you will never let any of your little ones perish, for “he who touches you, touches the apple of his eye.”

And while on your wings, whoever wants to destroy them must first destroy you.

So Lord, give me the grace to enjoy and use such amazing blessings. And since you have now added the tenderness and caring of the hen to the wisdom and strength of the eagle, you gather me under your wings.

You nourish me with your love and favor, so I may be yours always, and live here by faith, even as I hope to live with you in glory forever.

Amen.

These Three

Remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. – 1 Thessalonians 1:3.

Faith, hope, and love are anchors for the Christian life. Paul described how the Thessalonians’ faith led to work, their love led to labor, and their hope led to endurance. These characteristics ought to be seen in all believers. Too often, however,

  • a believer claims to have faith in Jesus Christ as Lord but is not motivated to work to promote his kingdom or the spread of the gospel;
  • a believer claims to hope in Jesus Christ as the one in control of his or her life, but when faced with difficulty or disappointment, he or she does not endure in the faith and turns away;
  • a believer claims to love Jesus Christ, but when serving in Christ’s kingdom becomes labor, he or she backs off.

Faith, hope, and love must result in work, labor, and endurance that will guide all believers through life—showing what to do and how to do it. How are your faith, hope, and love being shown?

Centuries of Meditations – First Century

97

O Jesus, who having prepared all the joys in heaven and earth for me, and redeemed me to inherit Thy Father’s treasures; hast prepared for me the most glorious companions, in whose presence and society I may enjoy them: I bless Thee for the communion of Saints: and for Thy adorning the same, with all manner of beauties, excellencies, perfections, and delights. O what a glorious assembly is the Church of the first-born, how blessed and divine! What perfect lovers! How great and honorable! How wise! How sweet and delightful! Every one being the end, every one the King of Heaven; every one the Son of God in greatness and glory; every one the entire and perfect friend of all the residue; every one the joy of each other’s Soul; every one the light and ornament of Thy Kingdom; every one Thy peculiar friend, yet loving every one as Thy peculiar friend: and rejoicing in the pleasures and delights of every one! O my God, make me one of that happy assembly. And let me love every one for whom Christ died, with a love as great and lively as His. That I may dwell in Him, and He in me: and that we all may be made perfect in me, even as Thou, O Jesus, art in the Father, and the Father is in Thee: that Thy love may be in us, and Thou in me for evermore.

Thomas Traherne (1637 – September 27, 1674) was an English poet, Anglican cleric, theologian, and religious writer. Traherne’s writings frequently explore the glory of creation and what he saw as his intimate relationship with God. The work for which Traherne is best known today is the Centuries of Meditations, a collection of short paragraphs in which he reflects on Christian life and ministry, philosophy, happiness, desire and childhood. This was first published in 1908 after having been rediscovered in manuscript ten years earlier. Before its rediscovery this manuscript was said to have been lost for almost two hundred years and is now considered a much loved devotional.

Anecdotal Story 8/04/2024

Gone to the Dogs

Scripture References: Nehemiah 12:27-28, 31, 38; Hebrews 10:25

Neighbors close to a large kennel began to complain about the disruptive noise. The owner decided to experiment with music piped through the kennels to see if it would soothe the fretful dogs. It worked! Canine stress was reduced and, naturally, so was canine barking. Incredibly, some mutts even got their own headsets. Most of the hundred dogs of every kind found Bach’s music the most relaxing. Music isn’t called the universal language without reason!

In a beautiful way music offers a parallel to life. Sometimes a melody occurs in the combination of orchestra instruments that no particular instrument is playing. This happened when the first violins of an orchestra played a part of Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony. Then the second violins played their part. Then they played together, and a strange thing occurred: the conjunction of the two produced a melody that neither played alone.

It is also true in the Christian life. We each praise God in our own way, in our own time. But when, in public worship, we join our bodies, souls, and voices, we make a sound for God we cannot make alone. God will always listen to the individual’s adoration, but how desperately others need to hear the voice the entire Christian orchestra speaks!

Life In Focus 8/03/2024

Dealing Treacherously In Marriage

THE more a nation’s divorce rate increases, the more God regards the situation as a national scandal. That seems to be the import of Malachi’s words concerning divorce (Malachi 2:14-16). Apparently a substantial number of husbands in postexilic Judah were “dealing treacherously” by divorcing their wives. This treachery involved a retraction of their marriage vows, but it also represented treachery against the Lord.

What provoked this skyrocketing divorce rate? The books of Ezra and Nehemiah tell of those two leaders challenging the men of the land to “put away” the wives that they had married from among the Canaanites and other peoples of the land (Ezra 9; 10; Nehemiah 13:23-27). These divorces were regarded as a means of national cleansing and a return to the covenant.

But is it possible that this policy of dissolving mixed marriages helped to create a jaded attitude about divorce? Could it have contributed to a climate in which divorce became an easy alternative even when both partners were Jewish, evidence of which we continue to see in Jesus’ day (Matthew 19:3-9)?

Malachi, a contemporary of Ezra and Nehemiah, spoke clearly about God’s attitude: The Lord hates divorce! (Malachi 2:16). The prophet warned the people to “guard yourselves in your spirit.” A casual attitude toward divorce was a symptom of a problem with one’s heart attitude toward the Lord. Loyalty to Him was what counted.

What Everyone Needs

2 Corinthians 3:18
We all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord,
are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory,
just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

When it comes to radical spiritual transformations, it’s easy for us to think of saints like the apostle Paul (from persecutor to protector of the church), John Newton (from slave trader to pastor), and Nicky Cruz (from street thug to street evangelist). But the truth is, every follower of Jesus has been transformed.

Before you met Jesus, you were something that needed radical transformation—what the Bible calls a “natural” man or woman (1 Corinthians 2:14). You may have been polite, friendly, generous, and well educated—hardly someone who appeared in need of transformation. But in God’s eyes, the need was readily apparent. Only God can see the fallen human nature that does not know how to give glory to the Creator. If you think for a moment about your life before and since meeting Jesus, you’ll see the transforming work only God could accomplish.

Whether the changes are subtle or significant, they are the work of the Holy Spirit within you, reproducing the life of Jesus (Romans 8:29). Don’t forget today to thank God for the changes He has made.

Luther Never Divulged Confession

Even though he had been a priest for twenty-eight years, Martin Luther, who fell away from the priesthood and the Catholic faith, never revealed anything he had heard in confession.

He left the Church, married a nun, preached and wrote against the Catholic Church and everyone and everything in it, but he never told a single thing he had heard in confession.

Faith From The Beginning 8/03/2024

The Furnace and the Lamp – Part 2

From Last Lesson: So we have this problem, justice saying, “No,” and love saying, “Yes.”

WE cannot solve this problem, because we have no analogy in our own life that can begin to compare with this act of God on Calvary. I may say to my child, “Now if you do this or do that, I am going to spank you. I’m going to use the razor strap on you.” But when he comes in after having disobeyed me, he knows how to handle dad. He manufactures a couple of tears, his lip begins to tremble, and instead of getting the rod, I pick him up in my arms and hug and kiss him, and forgive him. By doing so, however, I have made myself a liar. I have violated my promise. I have said that I would punish him, and I did not do it. I have broken my promise of punishment.

Now, beloved, God cannot do anything of that kind because He is unchangeable. He Himself has said, “In the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (Genesis 2:17). He also said, “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). He must punish the sinner with an infinite punishment, which means that it would take man an eternity to pay the price.

There is, however, also love, just as powerful, just as infinite, because all of God’s attributes are equal. It says, “No, if justice acts, then love will be violated.” Now how is this problem going to be met? The sinner cannot meet it, and so God comes and says, as it were, “I will pay man’s debt myself in the person of a sacrifice, even my Son, the Lord Jesus Christ,” who alone is able to meet this problem.

Think now of God passing between the sacrifice while Abram is asleep and helpless. There you have a picture of Calvary. Because He was infinite God, He could pay the infinite penalty for man. Thus we have the smoking furnace, God satisfied, in the sacrifice of these bleeding animals, while Gods love also is fully satisfied on the basis of this same sacrifice. “Mercy and truth are met together, righteousness and peace have kissed each other” at Calvary. God’s justice fully satisfied in the death of His Son, God’s wrath met, and at the same time His love fully gratified on the basis of the sacrifice of an innocent substitute. Abram himself should have lain there on the altar; that was his proper place. Instead God permitted him to kill an innocent substitute. Then He stood between the pieces of the sacrifice and made His covenant of pure grace; He joined hands as it were with Himself, for the salvation of Abraham. When it is done, He seems to say, “Now, Abram, wake up; I have good news for you.” We are not surprised that immediately after this incident we read:

“On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram” (Genesis 15:18).

My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:19.

What a source—“God!” What a standard—“His riches in glory!” What a channel—“Christ Jesus!” It is your sweet privilege to place all your need over against His riches, and lose sight of the former in the presence of the latter. His exhaustless treasury is thrown open to you, in all the love of His heart; go and draw upon it, in the artless simplicity of faith, and you will never have occasion to look to a creature-stream or lean on a creature-prop.

Luke 12:36

thought of day header

Friday August 2, 2024

Luke 12:36
You yourselves be like men who wait for their master,
when he will return from the wedding, that when he comes
and knocks they may open to him immediately.

Jesus is waiting for the day when he is to return.

He takes for granted that all His real friends are doing likewise. This runs like a red thread through all His sayings about His second advent.

If I understand Jesus correctly, to await the return of the Lord is one of the signs that we are true friends of Jesus.

Are we awaiting His return?

Or has something gone to pieces within us, as a result of which the day which Jesus looks forward to with rejoicing has become distant and unreal?

I remember from the time that I was a lad how we children looked forward with joy to the return of faith and mother when they had been away. But I remember also that there were times when I did not look forward with joy. I had not behaved properly. I can still remember the anxiety I felt when I heard the sound of the wagon in the distance.

Nothing is harder for Jesus to bear than that His return has become a thing to be feared. There are many who did wait for His return years ago, but who no longer do so.

One awaits with joy those whom one loves.

At the railway station we see the station master. He is all ready; the flyer can come whenever it will. But whether it comes or not makes little difference to him.

But look at old Anne over there. She is listening for the train and asking about it. For she is waiting for it. Andrew, her son, is coming on that train. And she has not seen him for twenty years.

“Bear through the night
Your well-trimmed light,
Speed forth to join the marriage rite.”

Spiritual Nuggets 8/02/2024

Into the Family

As people once bound to sin and destined for death, our ability to approach God personally—to call Him our Father—should astound us. Yet we sometimes forget to pray. We can take it for granted that He looks out for our every need.

The concept of approaching God as Father would have been a radical concept for the Roman community. In his letter to the church there, Paul discusses how our former lives without God were nothing but slavery to sin and death, the wages of sin. Christ’s work has set us free from this trajectory:

“For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, ‘Abba! Father!’ The Spirit himself confirms to our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, also heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer together with him so that we may also be glorified together with him” (Romans 8:15-17).

Paul’s audience would have used the term “Abba! Father!” only within immediate family relationships. To call God “our Father” would have been a shocking paradigm shift—especially for Jewish believers. However, Christ’s sacrifice made this relationship possible. He paid our debt and repaired the rift. Because of His work, and because we share in His Spirit, we also share in His relationship with the Father. We can call out to God, just as Jesus did. And the Father cares for us, just as He cares for His Son.

We may forget our intimate relationship with God, yet the Spirit continues to work within us to bring our lives into accordance with this relationship with the Father. Pray for insight and gratitude for your new position because of Christ. When you call on God, relate to Him as a child would to a loving father—bringing all to Him and knowing He understands you and knows what is best for you.
