Sometimes It Takes A Mountain šŸ” šŸŒŠ

Came by Sister Renee’s site and found this awesome article, plus, if you make it to the end, there is a link to a song by the Gaither Vocal Band, a favorite group of mine.

She does a lot of different writing, but she loves the Lord and her Brothers and Sisters in the Lord and I guarantee you can’t leave her site without being encouraged and having a spring in your step. Visit her site for a blessing!

Enjoy this article. Putting under Prayer and Praise rather than Body Ministry just because it is an awesome reminder of daily KNEE-MAIL!!

Renee🌻's avatarā™”Heart Tokensā™”

The words in this song soothe my spirit EVERY single time I hear it. There is a short testimony close to the end of this version that feels like the balm of Gilead being applied to that troubled heart.

We all have those days when the bad seems to slip right through all God’s good blessings and sting our heart. We wonder if we can make it through THIS trial–the one that has knocked us to our knees.

The older I’ve gotten, I have realized that it’s not as easy to get up from that ā€˜knee prone’ position as it once was.

I’ve heard older people remark –with a twinkle in their eyes– and a laugh on their lips, that they were having a hard time getting back up from the floor if they ever got down there in the first place….So they try to make sure they get…

I John 3:20-22

1 John 3:20, “For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.”

In continuing with this lesson, I want to remind and reiterate that the beginning of John’s statement is again in direct relationship with the previous verse. John begins with “For if,” meaning that we are continuing the thought left off in verse 19 where the Apostle tells us that acting in love gives us the knowledge of truth and the assurance we need IN that truth. When we act in love, our heart is assured.

But John goes on to say, presumably answering the “but” in a person’s question, what if we feel worthless or feel guilt in our conscience? Okay, John tells us, again following the assurances from the previous verse, that IF indeed we FEEL condemned by our heart or mind, God is greater than our heart! Our feelings and even our conscience, once spiritually renewed can deceive us because of the carnal nature of it.

Remember this, our conscience was developed to help guide us in the paths of righteousness but only in the natural. Remember, in the natural, by itself our works cannot nor ever will be able to save or redeem us, but the conscience was given to man, to allow him to navigate through the natural and social norms necessary to be a part of civilized society.

However, when our spirit has been renewed, reborn, remember what the Apostle Paul wrote, “Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” – 2 Corinthians 5:16-17. You see, to have an intellectual knowledge of Jesus, even as more than man, but to recognize Him as Messiah is still in the natural, remember, the devil and his demons believe in Jesus, just not in a saving way. They even know His power, but still, due to their pride cannot accept Him in a redemptive way. (James 2:19). But, since Christ arose and sent His Spirit, the Holy Spirit to not just dwelling with the spirit of man, but is leading and guiding the new man in power and strength. Listening to the Holy Spirit, His prodding and guidance in the directions He wants us to go is a spiritual walk and overcomes the carnality of man. When we “listen to that still small voice,” we are giving ascendance or rise to the new spirit side of us and subjecting the carnal, conscience driven side. The sad truth is, that man’s conscience, being carnal CAN be seared so that it can no longer prove as a worthwhile guide, it can as Paul writes in Romans, be turned over to a reprobate mind, a mind without the use and guidance of the conscience. (Romans 1:28).

So, when the Beloved Apostle tells us that God is greater than our heart, if our heart (or conscience) does indeed condemn us, we have assurance DESPITE how we feel, and according to the Word of Truth, since God, our Heavenly Father already KNOWS all things and doesn’t condemn us, as His children, we can ignore what our emotions tell us and what our carnal intellect tells us.

Consider this also; we are aware of our sins and even in spite of them we are aware of God’s forgiveness when we confess them to Him. But even though they ARE our sins, we only truly know them in part, due to the veil of our carnality while living in this corruptible flesh. God KNOWS the hidden recesses, the obscured motives and every aspect of our sins better than we ourselves! In most cases this should truly frighten us and yet, despite the clarity with which our Heavenly Father sees us, at the core of our heart, He still forgives us when we are faithful to confess and repent and He casts those sins, every aspect of them from His memory as far as the east is from the west! (Psalm 103:12). Now that, should allow no room for doubt about His unconditional love for those He calls His children!

Thus, John leads us into the whole reason for this confidence and assurance when he reiterates, “Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God.” Notice that when he truly wants to emphasize something he reverts back to the parental figure in his writing; beloved. In other words, “those I truly love and who ARE loved, there is no need for your heart to condemn you and thus you CAN have confidence toward God, as your Heavenly Father!”

John loves to lay a foundation in his writing and upon laying that foundation, he continues to add what could be analogous to mortar by repeating the same principle but in slightly different terms, ever making that foundation stronger and stronger until he springs what is truly important to what he is saying. He lays the verbal foundation, then he lays the actual building blocks on top.

Case in point;
Block one: when we know the truth our heart is assured before Him.
Block two: IF your heart (or conscience) DOES condemn you, He is greater than your heart.
Block three: He knows ALL things, hidden and otherwise, so nothing escapes Him.
Block four: He loves you none-the-less.
Block five: Thus you have no need for your heart to condemn you.
Block six: Because of all of the previous we HAVE confidence toward God.

Notice it is not we MAY have, or we CAN have, but rather the emphatic statement we HAVE (as in we DO have already) confidence toward God! Do you see the progression I am talking about? This has always been a style of his writing. As far as a teaching tool, it is one of the most effective. Back in about 1976, I went to a trade school in Yakima, Washington, my hometown to learn Appliance Repair, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning and Commercial Refrigeration. Now I had went previously to a community college for a completely different course, but I was truly blown away by this instructor at the trade school. His practice of teaching, was to give us some basics, then advance to something a bit more elaborate and then right when we thought we had it all mastered, he went back to the basics in the very beginning to make sure we had the very fundamentals committed to memory. It almost reminded me of the childhood game leap-frog. You take two steps forward, one back, two steps forward, one back, but you were always advancing. I ate up that kind of teaching and I excelled in my class. I guess that is why to a degree, I do the same thing when I teach and why I find John’s writings so worthwhile.

Anyway, you can see how John is building a foundation for what is coming next. “And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.” This is the key to which the Apostle was leading the last few verses too. Notice how John writes BECAUSE we keep His commandments AND do those things pleasing in His sight!” The first thing that jumped out at me was this last part of the verse.

Here’s why; John has spent all this time building up the readers, encouraging and edifying them, instructing them on how to BE. Remember, our walk is an action, it is never based on feelings alone. Again, I state this over and over again, because of the gravity of the truth in that. You can have confidence, you can have assurance, you can be bold, BUT if you don’t, this is how God Almighty sees you and it has nothing to do with how YOU feel and everything to do with how He SEES His children. So therefore, HAVE confidence, assurance and boldness! What does this boil down too? Think about it if necessary, for it is a basic foundation of a Christian’s journey!

This stood out to me as plain as a flashing neon sign. “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” – Hebrews 11:6. One of my favorite Scriptures and here’s why; “and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.” What is the one thing Scripture is clear about time and time again when it comes to PLEASING God Almighty, the God of Creation, the God of ALL the universe and everything in it? It is FAITH!

I know I repeat this so much, but think of it; the God of ALL Creation, both vast and infinitesimal is pleased by His creation when we have faith in Him and all He does! The Apostle John is reiterating the very things that the Apostle Paul wrote as confirmation, AND he built a foundation first, so that there would be no excuse to NOT walk in faith.

Now here is another exciting thing to me. John states after building the reader up, “And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because . . .” of all those things that he laid out first and foremost. Here’s the thing; I don’t want to belittle prayer, asking something from our Heavenly Father, because the very act is so very important. John assures us that when we have that faith that allows us to KNOW the assurance, confidence and boldness in our relationship with God, our Father that we can receive what we ask for. Now understand this does not mean getting what we ask in frivolity or selfishness, but rather as we get close in our relationship with God, as Heavenly Father, we KNOW what to ask for and because of that confidence and assurance we receive it.

But here’s the point I really want to make in all this. When we have a relationship with God Almighty, as Heavenly Father, and that relationship is based on confidence, assurance and boldness, then we are walking in faith and in what is pleasing to our Heavenly Father.

I want to ask you at this point; what is the purpose or mission of the Holy Bible, the Living Word of God; and what is ultimately the mission of Christ Jesus as Messiah, Savior and Redeemer. Why did our Heavenly Father, God Almighty, the Creator of All, send His beloved Son, in the form of a man, to come to earth, and to give authority to the Written World and then to ascend back to the Father, aside from His Salvation mission. When you read the Word of God, when you read John’s writings and especially in context with all the other books of the Bible, what do you say was the mission of the Holy Spirit of empowering that Word as well as Christ Jesus as Messiah?

God made man in the beginning to have a relationship with Himself and to share His unconditional love with His creation. But how can man understand unconditional love unless he is able to choose for himself Who to love. Thus:

“For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.” – 1 Corinthians 15:21-22.

The death Adam passed on to us was not so much the physical natural death, but rather the death of a spiritual relationship that was meant to be perfection with our Creator. Because disobedience and sin is abhorrent to God, for God is Holy (1 Peter 1:15-16), and God cannot abide in sin, He had a plan to bring man back into spiritual reconciliation based on man’s ability to choose the Gift that God was giving to fallen mankind!

John 14:1-20:

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?”

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.”

Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.”

Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? “Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.”

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. If you love Me, keep My commandments.”

“And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever–the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also. At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.”

Our whole journey, our whole walk, the reason to exercise our faith, to grow in confidence and assurance is so that through Christ Jesus, the Messiah we might have a relationship with God, the Father as God Himself meant for us from the very beginning. God’s Spirit, the Holy Spirit was sent to empower and to enlighten us, to illuminate the Living Word of God to our darkened spirit, to reawaken within us the need and to fill the emptiness that sin brought inherently into the world. The Holy Spirit empowers us to see beyond the natural, to catch a glimpse, though for now it is as through a veil, but a glimpse none-the-less of what wonders await us when we stand before the Throne of God with boldness as sons and daughters to a Father!

Jesus came that we might be spiritually reborn, reawakened to our need for the Gift He was offering just so that we might SEE the Father through Him! The Living Word, the inspired written Word has the power of the Holy Spirit behind it, to precisely cut away the cancer of sin and to open our blinded eyes to the truth. The Holy Spirit gives us the power and the tools needed to recognize the Father through the Son. What a glorious thought! What truly unfathomable wisdom! And the beloved Apostle in his writings, in confirmation with the inspired writings of others, brings these things to light!

Confidence in God, assurance in our heart of His love for us, gives us the faith we need to truly please Him while we are still making this journey burdened with our flesh. Yet, God, our Father, sees ALL, beyond that flesh. THAT should be enough to cause one to rejoice!

Next post we will begin with 1 John chapter 3 verse 23.

Heaven – Resplendent Grandeur

anecdotal stories
Genesis 2:1, “Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts.”

Ephesians 2:7, “so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.”

All Eternity

In January 1983, a three-nation infrared astronomy satellite soared into a 560-mile orbit above the earth and pointed its tracking antennae toward deep space. Almost at once, an avalanche of information poured into the computers at an English ground station. More than two hundred thousand new objects were soon spotted in the heavens, including twenty thousand galaxies in interstellar space. Astronomers couldn’t believe their good fortune. Having convinced themselves of the universe’s emptiness, the new treasures stunned them.

Christians are delighted, but not surprised. The God of Scripture created more in this world than can ever be investigated, studied, or understood. As a dim reflection of God’s incomparably resplendent grandeur we expect what the satellite revealed. Yet, all we have experienced here, or ever shall, reads like an empty page compared to the fullness of life to come in His presence.

The Sheep and Their Shepherd – Charles Spurgeon

*Pastor’s Note: I want to depart a bit from my normal practice of posting short sermons by these great men of God for one that is rather long. Because of the fact that it IS long, I am going to break it up into parts. I truly hope you can enjoy AND be inspired by the preaching/teaching of some of these great men as much as I do. God Bless for your patience. – Pastor Roland

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (19 June 1834 – 31 January 1892) was an English Particular Baptist preacher. Spurgeon remains highly influential among Christians of various denominations, among whom he is known as the “Prince of Preachers.” He was a strong figure in the Reformed Baptist tradition, defending the Church in agreement with the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith understanding, and opposing the liberal and pragmatic theological tendencies in the Church of his day.

Part One:

The Sheep and Their Shepherd

Delivered At the Metropolitan Tabernacle, Newington

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” – John 10:27

CHRISTIANS ARE HERE compared to sheep. Not a very flattering comparison you may say; but then we do not wish to be flattered, nor would our Lord deem it good to flatter us, While far from flattering, it is, however, eminently consoling, for of all creatures there are not any more compassed about with infirmity than sheep. In this frailty of their nature they are a fit emblem of ourselves; at least, of so many of us as have believed in Jesus and become his disciples. Let others boast how strong they are; yet if there be strong ones anywhere, certainly we are weak. We have proved our weakness, and day by day we lament it. We do confess our weakness; yet may we not repine at it, for, as Paul said, so we find, when we are weak then are we strong. Sheep have many wants, yet they are very helpless, and quite unable to provide for themselves. But for the shepherd’s cure they would soon perish. This, too, is our case. Our spiritual needs are numerous and pressing, Yet we cannot supply any of them. We are travelers through a wilderness that yields us neither food nor water. Unless our bread drop down from heaven, and our water flow out of the living rock, we must die. Our weakness and our want we keenly feel: still we have no cause to murmur, since the Lord knows our poor estate, and succours us with the tenderest care.

Sheep, too, are silly creatures, and in this respect likewise we are very sheepish. We meekly own it to him who is ready to guide us. We say, as David said, “O God, thou knowest my foolishness;” and he says to us as he said to David, “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go.” If Christ were not our wisdom, we should soon fall a prey to the destroyer. Every grain of true wisdom that we possess we have derived from him; of ourselves we are dull and giddy; folly is bound up in our heart. The more conscious you are, deer brethren, of your own deficiencies, your lack of stamina, discretion, sagacity, and all the instincts of self-preservation, the more delighted you will be to see that the Lord accepts you under these conditions, and calls you the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. He discerns you as you are, claims you as his own, foresees all the ills to which you are exposed, yet tends you as his flock, sets store by every lamb of the fold, and so feeds you according to the integrity of his heart, and guides you by the skillfulness of his hands. “I will feed my flock, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord God.” Oh, what sweet music there is to us in the name which is given to our Lord Jesus Christ of “the good Shepherd!” It not only describes the office he holds, but it sets forth the sympathy he feels, the aptness he shows, and the responsibility he bears to promote our well-being. What if the sheep be weak, yet is the shepherd strong to guard his flock from the prowling wolf or the roaring lion? If the sheep suffer privation because the soil is barren yet is the shepherd able to lead them into pasturage suitable for them. If they be foolish, yet he goes before them, cheers them with his voice, and rules them with the rod of his command.

There cannot be a flock without a shepherd; neither is there a shepherd truly without a flock. The two must go together. They are the fullness of each other. As the church is the fullness of him that filleth all in all, so we rejoice to remember that “of his fullness have all we received, and grace for grace.” That I am like a sheep is a sorry reflection; but that I have a shepherd charms away the sorrow and creates a new joy. It even becomes a gladsome thing to be weak, that I may rely on his strength; to be full of wants, that I may draw from his fullness; to be shallow and often at my wit’s end, that I may be always regulated by his wisdom. Even so doth my shame redound to his praise. Not to you, ye great and mighty, who lift your heads high, and claim for yourselves honor: not for you is peace, not to you is rest; but unto you, ye lowly ones, who delight in the valley of humiliation, and feel yourselves to be taken down in your own esteem–to you it is that the Shepherd becomes dear; and to you will he give to lie down in green pastures beside the still waters.

In a very simple way, we shall speak about the proprietor of the sheep. “My sheep,” says Christ. Then, we shall have a little to say about the marks of the sheep. After that I propose to talk awhile about the privileges of the sheep. “I know my sheep:” they are privileged to be known of Christ. “My sheep hear my voice.”

I Did It My Way!

Pastor’s Note: I wrote this a few years ago for the local newspaper where we lived in Globe, Arizona. It is worth publishing on this blog as I have updated some of the Scriptures references. All in all, it is pretty much as it was published in the Religious editorial of the newspaper. Pictures were added for this post.

ā€œI did it my way!ā€

So goes the words to the song that Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley helped to popularize. It’s an enjoyable and entertaining song, and yet, as epitomized by their lives it was more than a song. It became their anthem.

If you are a child of God, with Jesus as your Master, that song should remain just what it is; an entertaining and popular song and nothing more. Yet, as you look around today, you can still see that philosophy at work, and not just in secular worldly circles.

I’m a preacher and a student of human behavior and so I learn by observation as well as experience; with that in mind I will give you an example of what I’m talking about from past experience. Some time ago (in fact years, now) I had an opportunity to pray with some other Christians concerning the possibility of starting an organization that would benefit the community. We prayed quite fervently and sought the Lord for direction and vision and the Lord blessed the leadership with both; confirmed by everyone else involved in those prayers. The organization was thus established with many apparent and obvious miracles paving the way. The vision was also shared with the community with some accompanying promises to garner their support. As we progressed though, as is common in anything that involves the natural order of things, the turmoil and trials of running this large organization changed the very character of the organization into something totally different than the vision that was confirmed to be of the Lord. Many people in the community saw the difference and remembered the promises, and many people, including those that had initially prayed were clearly disheartened, including myself.

What had happened was that God had set a precedent, a goal for what He wanted to accomplish in the initial vision. But as soon as the trials and problems started, instead of leaders hitting their knees and asking the Lord’s advice and direction, the supposed wisdom of man stepped up and said, ā€œThanks, Lord, I’ll take it from here.ā€ They made that song, ā€œI did it my wayā€ their anthem without even realizing it.

Today that organization is still striving, but that is the point, it is striving, NOT thriving and thus it isn’t what it could be or what it should’ve been. The Lord has told some of us to just stand back and watch. I have learned through life and history that sometimes we learn not just by seeing things done properly, but also by seeing how things are not meant to be done. In a Christian’s life, the end(s) should NEVER justify the means, especially if Christ is truly Lord. Every step we take toward God’s will and goals for our lives, are ordered by Him. “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, And He delights in his way.” – Psalm 37:23.

The word ‘order’ in the original Hebrew, means to prepare, establish, to make right. In other words, God establishes or prepares every one of our steps. But look at what it goes on to say, ā€œand He (God) delights in his (man’s) way.ā€ The Hebrew for the word ‘delights’ means, to be pleased, to have favor. When a child of the Most High God follows the steps prepared and established for him by God, the Lord is pleased and has favor with that person. Now I learned years ago in English classes in school, that for every positive statement, you can infer the negative of that statement, and vice-versa. In other words, you can infer that Scripture to say, “if a man does not walk in the steps prepared or established by God, God is not pleased or does not favor that man.” It all boils down to this; if Jesus IS Lord and Master, He is only that if we submit our will totally to Him. He is no longer Master if our will takes precedence over His.

One of the most beloved and well-known passages of scripture is found in Matthew 6:9-13, otherwise known as ā€œThe Lord’s Prayer.ā€ Almost every Christian recognizes this passage as the perfect pattern for prayer, and one area that Jesus commands and teaches us to pray is stated in verse 10, ā€œYour will be done On earth as it is in heaven.ā€

Jesus tells all of His disciples, past, present, and future that this is how we should pray, and this is what we should strive for. As Christians, if we have an anthem describing our life, and especially that of a Christ-like disciple, let it be this passage of ā€œThe Lord’s Prayerā€ in conjunction with Psalm 37:23.

True success is not achieved by allowing the end(s) to be attained or justified by just any means, but rather it is attained by following the Lord’s perfectly prepared and established steps, thus reaching the goal He has destined for us and therefore having His favor manifested in our lives. To do anything else would be contrary to what the writer of Proverbs states when he wrote, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;” – Proverbs 3:5. There is promise in following that Scripture as the writer states in the rest of those verses: “In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the LORD and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh, And strength to your bones.” – Proverbs 3:6-8. Sadly for some, it is way to easy to trust in their own wisdom. That always leads pitfalls in the world that could have been avoided. Looking back over the years, the truth of NOT trusting in the Lord has proven that to sadly be the case. The community was at a greater loss for that.

In the classic film, ā€œThe Wizard of Ozā€, Dorothy was told to follow the yellow brick road in order to reach her target destination. In the Bible, we are told to follow the God established road to our God ordained destination. We don’t see this road with our natural eyes but rather with our spiritual eyes. What, you may ask, comprises our spiritual eyes? Two things; Faith and the Word of God! Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” And the Psalmist stated this, “Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.” – Psalm 119:105.

We walk this ordained road by faith and in the knowledge of God’s Word, knowing that God has prepared each and every step, knowing that to do so is for our best as well as for the best of those to whom we may have some influence and especially concerning serving the needs of others. God, our Heavenly Father, will NEVER lead us wrong. I have in my life, determined to follow His paths, wherever He leads and I pray that your choice is the same. While I do that, I will continue to enjoy the song ā€œMy Wayā€ as just that, a nice, entertaining song.

Where I Find God

God is always in my thoughts
morning, noon and night;
Everywhere I look, His wondrous-works
are in my sight.

Who can watch a sunrise,
see a flower or a tree,
And not feel close to Jesus
when He gave them to you and me.

The moon and honour-guard of stars,
a rainbow in the sky,
Are precious art, signed by a King,
so we know that He’s close-by.

I see, hear, feel and touch
His love that of me is a part.
Where else can I always find Him?
In the centre of my heart.

Weep Over Sin!

“Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”? But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” – James 4:4-10

Who Has Seen The Wind?

Wind is the flow of gases on a large scale. On the surface of the Earth, wind consists of the bulk movement of air. In meteorology, winds are often referred to according to their strength, and the direction from which the wind is blowing. Short bursts of high-speed wind are termed gusts. Strong winds of intermediate duration (around one minute) are termed squalls. Long-duration winds have various names associated with their average strength, such as breeze, gale, storm, and hurricane. Wind occurs on a range of scales, from thunderstorm flows lasting tens of minutes, to local breezes generated by heating of land surfaces and lasting a few hours, to global winds resulting from the difference in absorption of solar energy between the climate zones on Earth. The two main causes of large-scale atmospheric circulation are the differential heating between the equator and the poles, and the rotation of the planet (Coriolis effect). Within the tropics, thermal low circulations over terrain and high plateaus can drive monsoon circulations. In coastal areas the sea breeze/land breeze cycle can define local winds; in areas that have variable terrain, mountain and valley breezes can dominate local winds.

In human civilization, the concept of wind has been explored in mythology, influenced the events of history, expanded the range of transport and warfare, and provided a power source for mechanical work, electricity and recreation. Wind powers the voyages of sailing ships across Earth’s oceans. Hot air balloons use the wind to take short trips, and powered flight uses it to increase lift and reduce fuel consumption. Areas of wind shear caused by various weather phenomena can lead to dangerous situations for aircraft. When winds become strong, trees and human-made structures are damaged or destroyed.

Wind. Breezes, movement, invisible, yet evident.

The last few months I have been thinking a lot about it, mainly in a spiritual way. Sitting in my living room on our couch, I have a perfect view out through our sliding doors at the neighbors various trees behind our house and looking out the front picture window, a beautiful, unobstructed view at the trees across the street from us.

Living in Delta, Colorado, a small, predominantly farming and agricultural community, I had no idea of the amount of wind we have witnessed over the years. Coming from a mountainous area of central Arizona, it was a big change and yet the wind has always fascinated me and captured my imagination. I guess in retrospect it is no surprise that I would think of the spiritual implications of what we really don’t see.

My wife, Sue, and I have talked a lot about the similarities between the natural phenomenon and the unseen spiritual world. She reminded me of a poem her grandmother used to recite to her when she, my wife, was just a little girl and she has never forgotten it. Over the years, the lyrics changed ever so slightly from the original, but it was easy to find the author of this simple yet profound poem while searching on the internet. The following is the original:

Author: Christina Rossetti (1830–1894) This poem is in the public domain.

Wind.

As I said, there is something fascinating to me about it. Most people really don’t give it much thought but rather, for the most part, take it for granted, unless of course they live in Tornado Alley or in one of the Hurricane Corridors. But then, these areas are the extremes. For the most part, people who experience this necessary natural phenomenon, recognize it as a mild breeze, subtle and at times gentle upon their personages. Only rarely does it get gusty enough to draw attention to itself, but then in most cases it can’t be ignored.

Last night, I slept very little as I was thinking very much on this phenomenon. True, I had been praying, communing with the Lord and thinking about this as it has filled my mind for a while now. This morning upon waking, sure enough, outside the bedroom window, I could see the wind rustling through the neighbor’s trees and even as I sit writing this, looking out my office window, I see the effects of the wind going by.

Some of those trees out back remind me so much of schools of silver fish as they group together in the ocean and sway and move with the currents of the ocean. The leaves on some of the trees in the yards behind us, look a lot like that, swaying and moving with the currents of the wind.

But still, all we see is the effects. We don’t actually SEE the wind itself. Of course, science can explain that away due to the fact that the wind is comprised of the varying gases that comprise the earth’s natural atmosphere. You can’t SEE the gases, but they can be measured and quantified, but mainly due to their effects. These invisible forces react to those natural things that we CAN see, all around us.

Can you imagine, what early man must have thought when viewing the influence and results of the invisible wind on nature around him? No wonder the wind had such an impact on mythology, at least until scientific reason could finally explain it sufficiently. To me it all goes along with the course of history, man’s ability to grow in knowledge and Biblical prophecy that explains that man would find answers to some of his most concerning questions.

If you read Daniel 12:4 like many do, you can see that in the end-times, the last days, the angel told Daniel that knowledge would be on the increase. But when you read it in the context that it is meant, it IS stating a fact about the very end-times of mankind’s history, but also that before those times knowledge WILL be steadily increasing. This coincides with the truth of history as well as the prophetic, for as we are living in the last days now (as all signs point too) you can see that while knowledge has been steadily increasing, it is actually increasing at a rapidly exponential rate!

In this, I truly love the Apostle Paul’s teachings, for he makes things so clear concerning the spiritual, that unseen realm that many believe in and a few truly KNOW to be the only true reality!

“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” – 2 Corinthians 4:17-18.

Paul is saying that those things that have an affect on us, influence us, are only momentary in the scheme of eternal reality. Just like the wind rustling through the leaves of a tree, causing leaves and seeds to fall and scatter, the invisible unseen wind is doing a natural work to insure the species of tree continues to flourish. This was God Almighty’s doing, this was/is the Creator’s work, to insure that life continues. The wind could be considered a light affliction in the sense that the standing tree loses some of what makes it so glorious, yet in that process, that glory and majesty continues to propagate in other areas that haven’t been touched by the original tree’s splendor.

Remember what the Beloved Apostle John wrote, one of my favorite verses:

“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” – John 4:24.

God’s Spirit is unseen. But His Spirit, His Power is real, it is TRUTH, it can be measured, it can be quantified. Despite how atheists and doubters try to convince themselves and others that God doesn’t exist; like the wind, invisible to the seeing eye, God’s Spirit, the Holy Spirit influences those things around you that you CAN see. The RESULTS of His Presence can be seen and felt and it is only those who CHOOSE spiritual blindness that deny that fact. These same people, these doubters would deny the reality of the wind if they could!

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.” – Romans 1:18-21.

For the wrath of God is REVEALED, it is seen, it has an effect on those who are unrighteous. Why and How? Because what IS known of God is demonstrated, it is shown, revealed IN them directly!! Paul goes on to emphatically state that since the beginning of Creation, God, Who is Spirit, His Character, His Attributes, His Nature, HIS VERY PERSONALITY are clearly seen. Notice, not MAY be seen, but rather CLEARLY seen. Man is without excuse, no matter how he tries to spin the doubt of God’s existence, because man HAD known God and the only reason he chooses now to be blind and foolish, is because of his own futile thinking and understanding and because they refused to honor and glorify God as Father and Creator!!

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the LORD and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh, And strength to your bones.” – Proverbs 3:5-8.

Do NOT lean on your own understanding! The very thing the wisest man in the world wrote to not do, is what mankind in general has chosen to do, and thus they wonder why they can’t recognize the invisible God when His affects are influencing everything around them that their eyes CAN see!! Lord forgive us and heal and open our blinded eyes that we might recognize the TRUTH that is ever present in front of us!

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” – 2 Corinthians 5:7.

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” – Hebrews 11:1.

“For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.” – Romans 8:24-25.

Here is a thought, from the Living Words of Jesus, Himself;

“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?”

Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?” – John 3:8-12.

Jesus used a very practical example for this great teacher, Nicodemus, even back then. He shows a direct correlation, between the unseen wind and it’s results and compares it directly to the unseen Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, the Father! Even during this time in history, this analogy should have been as clear as could be and especially to a renowned teacher as Nicodemus. But notice verse 12, a statement that I have to reiterate in the face of doubters and unbelievers everywhere; “If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?”

I am at a point in my life, in my journey, my walk with the Lord, where I do not need proof of His existence. Experience and life have taught me every step of the way, that my Heavenly Father exists and that Christ Jesus, the Son was not just a historical figure. God is Spirit; like the wind, He is unseen and invisible and especially to our natural eyes, but Jesus has assured us that when we see Him, Christ Jesus in His glorified body, we WILL see the Father.

“Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father’s name, they bear witness of Me. But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. I and My Father are one.” – John 10:25-30.

“Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.”

“Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? “Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.” – John 14:8-11.

I long for that day; not because of unbelief or desiring more proof, but rather knowing at that time, the natural will no longer have a hold on me and I will no longer be seeing only with natural eyes, but will being seeing my Lord, my King, my Redeemer with eyes no longer clouded by a veil, or by the fog of the carnal that still binds us all to this temporary portion of the eternal reality. When I step over that threshold, when I am able to walk through that door, then and only then will I be truly alive and ever one with the Lord! What a glorious day that will be!

For now, I watch the influence of the wind upon those things around us. In the spiritual, I sit still in the presence of His Spirit and at times feel the gentle breeze and warmth of His presence upon my being. Some may call it the “still small voice,” but I choose to identify as that subtle breeze blowing through my spirit. Just like the wind, it’s influence causes movement and a stirring within me.

There have been times and I believe there are times coming when the movement of the Spirit upon God’s children won’t be so gentle and subtle. I believe like strong gusts, it will shake us to our core, awakening the spirit deep within us, a call to attention as it were. I believe we will recognize not just the force behind that spiritual gust, but also walk in the power of it. Just like in early history when sailors felt the breezes quicken and lowered their sails to catch the full force of the wind and used it to propel them. So it will be with God’s children in a time that is coming quickly upon us.

When that time is recognized, the doubters, the naysayers will feel the force of that spiritual wind and they will either ride along with it or be blown over by it. Their excuses, there darkened and futile minds will no longer have a place to hide for they, in the force of that spiritual gale will be without excuse. The time is coming and it may even now be dawning right now.

The Holy Spirit has given us tools, gifts as it were and the main one for every child of God is discernment. It is like a meteorologist’s barometer, but it is a spiritual instrument. It is time God’s children start watching the signs, for a strong movement of spiritual proportions is about to take place. What a time in the history of mankind to be living!

“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

Adversity – Beneficial

anecdotal stories
Proverbs 3:11-12, “My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD Or loathe His reproof, For whom the LORD loves He reproves, Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights.”

2 Corinthians 12:9, “And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.”

Adversity, Our Friend

A queen bee lays each egg in a six-sided cell filled with pollen and honey that will nourish the unborn offspring. She then seals the top with wax. Twenty-one days later, its food supply exhausted, the newborn wrestles, squirms, and strains to break the wax seal and emerge alive. The opening it makes in exiting is so narrow that it rubs off the membrane covering the wings, enabling it to fly. Should the wax seal be opened prematurely, the bee will emerge without a struggle – unable to fly since the membrane remains on the wings. It is soon stung to death by other bees.

Don’t we invariably view adversities as obstacles? Instead, they are often like the opening torn by the exertion of the bee: the means to growth. They can uncover resources, develop strengths, and stimulate tenacity we would not otherwise have. They can bring us a joy equal to their distress. As John Bunyan wrote, “They can appear as the lion to Samson: roaring and gnashing; but, when subdued, full of honey.”

God wisely designed a specific struggle to give the common bee new life. We can trust Him to provide for each of us the struggles best suited to bring us rewards, not penalties. If we obey him even when it is difficult, we will grow and stretch. Perhaps we need to ask ourselves, “Do we want to walk, or fly?”

God’s Medicine: Affliction – J.C. Ryle

John Charles Ryle (May 10, 1816 – June 10, 1900) was an evangelical Anglican clergyman and first Bishop of Liverpool. He was renowned for his powerful preaching and extensive tracts.

Affliction is one of God’s medicines. By it He often teaches lessons which would be learned in no other way. By it He often draws souls away from sin and the world, which would otherwise have perished everlastingly.

Health is a great blessing, but sanctified disease is a greater. Prosperity and worldly comfort, are what all naturally desire; but losses and crosses are far better for us, if they lead us to Christ. Thousands at the last day, will testify with David, ā€œIt is good for me that I have been afflicted.ā€ (Psalm 119:71).

Prayer For Grace and Healing

Dear Heavenly Father;

We come to You in the Name of Your Son, Jesus Christ. We confess our need for You today. We need Your healing and Your grace. We need hope restored. We need to be reminded that You work on behalf of those You love, constantly, powerfully, completely.

Forgive us for trying to fix our situations all on our own. Forgive us for running all different directions and spinning our wheels to find help, when true help and healing must be found first in You. Forgive us for forgetting how much we need You, above everyone and everything else.

We come to You and bring You the places we are hurting. You see where no one else is able to fully see or understand. You know the pain we’ve carried. The burdens. The cares. You know where we need to be set free. We ask for Your healing and grace to cover every broken place. Every wound. Every heartache.

Thank You that You are able to do far more than we could ever imagine. Thank You for Your Mighty Power that acts on behalf of those You call Your children. We reach out to You, and know that You are restoring and redeeming every place of difficulty, every battle, for Your greater glory. Thank You that You will never waste our pain and suffering. We love You. We glorify You. We exalt You above all else. You see our need for You today.

We ask all these things In Jesus’ Name, Amen and AMEN!

Bragging About God – A.W. Tozer

Aiden Wilson Tozer (April 21, 1897 – May 12, 1963) was an American Christian pastor, author, magazine editor, and spiritual mentor. Self-taught theologian. Fearless preacher. Gifted writer. Man of the inner life. A.W. Tozer, called by many a ā€œmodern-day prophet.ā€ Observing contemporary Christian living, Tozer felt the church was on a dangerous course toward compromising with “worldly” concerns. He was a man who was obsessed with the glory and the holiness of God and making it known to others.

Basic beliefs about the Person and the nature of God have changed so much that there are among us now men and women who find it easy to brag about the benefits they receive from God-without ever a thought or a desire to know the true meaning of worship! I have immediate reactions to such an extreme misunderstanding of the true nature of a holy and sovereign God, for I believe that the very last thing God desires is to have shallow-minded and worldly Christians bragging about Him. Beyond that, it does not seem to be very well recognized that God’s highest desire is that every one of His believing children should so love and so adore Him that we are continually in His presence, in spirit and in truth. Something wonderful and miraculous and life-changing takes place within the human soul when Jesus Christ is invited in to take His rightful place. That is what God anticipated when He wrought the plan of salvation. He intended to make worshipers out of rebels; to restore the place of worship which our first parents knew when they were created!

They Missed Him

They missed Him. Oh how they missed Him!

They were looking for a lion, He came as a Lamb, and they missed Him.

They were looking for a warrior, He came as a Peacemaker, and they missed Him.

They were looking for a king, He came as a Servant, and they missed Him.

They were looking for liberation from Rome, He submitted to the Roman stake, and they missed Him.

They were looking for a fit to their mold, He was the mold maker, and they missed Him.

What are you looking for? Lion? Warrior? King? Liberator?

What are you looking for? They were looking for their temporal needs to be met, He came to meet their eternal need, and they missed Him.

He came as a Lamb to be sacrificed for your sin. Will you miss Him?

He came to make peace between God and man. Will you miss Him?

He came to model servanthood for all mankind. Will you miss Him?

He came that we might have true liberty. Will you miss Him?

He came to give you eternal life. Will you miss Him?

When we submit to the Lamb, we will meet the Lion.

Join with the Peacemaker, and we will meet the Warrior.

Work with the Servant, and we will meet the King.

Walk with the Submitted, and we will meet the Liberator.

If we concern ourselves with the eternal, and we will have the temporal.

If Jesus is not fitting into the mold you have, then come to the mold maker and get a new one.

Submit to His plan for your life and you will see the eternal need met first; then all the other things you have need of will be taken care of as well.

Jeremiah 29:11-13, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.”

I Am My Brother’s Keeper ~

“I am My Brother’s Keeper!” ~

I am my brother’s keeper,
I help him to understand
I encourage him to put
his life into God’s hand.

I am my sister’s keeper,
I help her to see the light
I encourage her to grow
to keep Jesus in her sight.

I am my neighbor’s keeper,
I pray for their daily needs
I tell them to always listen
to follow where God leads.

I am my mother’s keeper,
in her old age I help her out
I hold her hand when lonely
to calm her fears and doubt.

I am my father’s keeper,
I lift to God, his very soul
I pray each day and night
Jesus will make him whole.

I am my children’s keeper,
I listen to their concerns
I pray as they become adults
God’s will, they may discern.

The Lord is my keeper,
He is with me every day
He watches over me . . .
as souls to Him ~ I sway.

ā€œAnd the Lord said unto Cain,
Where is Abel thy brother?
And he said, I know not:
Am I my brother’s keeper?ā€
Genesis 4:9 (KJV)

Prayer Against Fear, Doubt & Anxiety

Prayer Against Fear, Doubt & Anxiety

Heavenly Father, draw near to us now and hear our prayers. Jesus hear us and intercede for us. Lord, we long to be near you. Lord, we long for the day when you will be all we want. Lord, we long for the days when we will have perfect faith and trust and when we will not fear or doubt. Lord, when you will make all things new.

Heavenly Father, we long for the day when we will be with you in paradise -when suffering and fear will cease, and yet we know Lord, you have given us today to continue living in the in between. Lord, you promise those of us who have believed in our hearts and confessed with our mouths that you are Lord, that we are new creations. That the old has gone and the new has come. And Lord, while we know that we are saved and that our salvation is complete, we also still live in this broken world. And while sin and death no longer reign over us, they still have power in our lives. And Lord we confess that one way this often manifests itself in us is in fear and doubt and anxiety.

Heavenly Father, help us to overcome those fears, big and small. We fear that we won’t make it – that our sin might cause us to walk away from you or that you might stop providing for us and that we won’t have enough money, or enough food or a place to live.

Heavenly Father, at times we fear and doubt that there is no way even your death on the cross could cover over our sin.

Heavenly Father, we fear for our children and our loved ones, who they will become, for their health and safety and almost every aspect of their life. We fear that we will be alone. We fear that we won’t have friends. We fear losing our health or never recovering if we are sick.

Heavenly Father we fear that we will fail. We fear that we aren’t good enough, not pretty enough, not thin enough, not smart enough or that we will never fit in.

Heavenly Father we fear what people think of us – what we say or what we do or don’t do. Yet Lord we fear being truly known and we also fear being unknown.

Heavenly Father, we need your help. We don’t want to be afraid or doubt – we want to trust you. We want to be a people marked by faith in you even when we can’t see the path ahead. Lord Jesus, hear our prayers. Lord, we cry out to you now.

Heavenly Father we pray for faith. Lord you are the author of our faith. Faith is not a work we have to muster. Rather you give it to us. So Lord, we pray you would increase our faith in the areas where we are fearful and doubt. Lord, help us to let go of the way we idolize the visible and the known in our lives. Lord, help us when we are tempted to make idols out of your provisions themselves. And Lord help us not just to pursue material health and wealth, but to trust your promise that you will use all things for good in our lives – the good and the bad. Lord, help us to have faith in you rather than in the things we think we can control.

Heavenly Father, we also pray you would help us to pray. Lord, so often we sit and stew in our fear and anxiety, or we seek to hide it from you or we or we only talk to friends about it, but we don’t bring it to your throne of grace. Lord, lead us to pray when we are scared and fearful. Lord, may our days be marked by hundreds of prayers as we encounter fear and doubt.

Heavenly Father, we also pray that you would give us holy memories of your faithfulness and goodness to us. Lord, help us remember your faithfulness every day. Lord, help us to be a church marked by Thanksgiving. Lord, especially when we fear and doubt, remind us of all the ways you know us and know what we need.

Heavenly Father, help us to hide your promises about fear and doubt in our heart through memorizing your LIVING Word. Lord, you know the way we fear and doubt and yet your Holy word is full of verses that call us away from fear and anxiety. Help us to make them a part of our prayers.

ā€œHe will never leave you or forsake you.ā€

ā€œLook at the birds of the air and consider the lilies of the field.ā€

ā€œDo not be anxious about anything.ā€

ā€œDo not fear, for I have redeemed you.ā€

ā€œDo not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.ā€

Heavenly Father, we also pray that you would guard us from the whispers of the enemy in the areas where we are prone to fear and doubt. Lord, help us to realize and use the power you give us to fight Satan and the way to tries to deceive us.

Heavenly Father, our fear and doubt feel ever before us. And yet Lord, despite this struggle, you love us. Lord, even though we are fearful and anxious about the very things you have provided for us over and over again, you are patient and kind and merciful to us. Lord thank you for your grace.

Heavenly Father, thank you that we don’t have to earn our way back to you or measure up by not doubting and not being afraid.

Heavenly Father, hear our prayers. We ask all these things in the precious Name of your Son and our Intercessor and Advocate, Jesus Christ! Amen and Amen! To God be ALL the Glory!

Do Not Fear

I’ve been trying to visit a myriad of blogs I follow and I’ve noticed something, very similar to a theme, cropping up here and there. It isn’t so much what media calls, a trending, but it has come up enough to make me realize that with the state of the world, let alone the state of politics here in the U.S. there are a lot of people who are demonstrating a bit of fear in their social media posts, if not just outright coming out and stating that they ARE fearful at events unfolding.

Now I want you to know that I am aware, the subject of fear, the teaching on it from behind the pulpit and in print is not something new at all, but rather a subject that has to be visited from time to time and it seems to me, that it is something that we SEEM to need to be reminded of quite a bit more frequently as of late.

I was actually going through some old notes on messages I had preached and taught in the past and ran across this one that I had titled, “Do Not Fear.” When perusing some of the blog posts that I mentioned above, I went looking for the notes that I remembered. It just seems like this is a good time to remind my brothers and sisters, those who’ve been around for a while, and those who are fairly new and questioning events going on, the necessity of realizing fear’s place in the Christian’s journey through life.

I know it’s not some new and scintillating teaching, but that doesn’t detract from the importance of it as a teaching, none-the-less. The following is an updated version of that message I taught a few years ago when I was still in Arizona.

2 Timothy 1:
6 Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God,
9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, . . .

I know that verse 7 is especially a common and well-taught verse, but it is among some of my most favorite verses. In context and in conjunction with the other verses, it paints a very profound picture of an aspect of our walk in the Christian lifestyle. Yes, I did say, Christian “lifestyle” for what I want to bring forth is not just the fact that we ARE saved and redeemed, but that we are on a journey of a lifetime that encompasses a change in the WAY we live, a lifestyle change, brought about by following the example of Christ Jesus.

Now understand this was the Apostle Paul speaking to Timothy as his mentor and reminding him of the charge and the calling that he, Paul had given to Timothy. Paul was the one that “ordained” Timothy as led by the Holy Spirit, but Paul wanted to remind Timothy of something further. Before I touch on that further “something,” I want to remind you of some things I have learned over the last couple of decades.

Many people who minister (or serve) on the internet are and have been accused of wasting their time, of having a “hobby religion” and not serious ministry at all. But I would beg to differ with any of them for this reason; one of the most important and loving demonstrations, is the ability to spend our time in the service of others to encourage, inspire, comfort and strengthen with the LIVING Word of God.

How many people in your local community who “minister” at their local congregations can say in all honesty and truthfulness that they have encouraged someone in the Lord all the way across to the other side of this earth? How many of your local ministers (don’t forget, the word minister MEANS to Serve) can say they have prayed “unselfishly” with no thought of acknowledgment for some poor or hurting person in an area that you may never travel too or have never been, and yet still give those people the inspiration to carry on when they have felt dismayed and weary?

Don’t get me wrong, I am NOT condemning by any means the local ministries, but I am making a point; and the point is that what you do here online, day in and day out, without thinking of any reward, even considering the reward could be in the form of acknowledgment, prestige or the ego boost of someone patting you on the back, THAT is the greatest DEMONSTRATION of your love for the Heavenly Father and His Creation!

The Bible tells us that “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” (John 15:13). Well, that has always been taught for so long as “you are willing to die for another,” because that is in essence what Jesus did on the Cross of Calvary for each of us. That may be true in essence, but how much more of a sacrifice for others is it to give up YOUR time, (that you could spend doing something else), time that you can’t get back and yet because you love the Lord and the people He created, the lost and the saved equally, you are willing to give some of yourself up to pray, to encourage, to inspire, etc. That is really what laying your life down means. You are forfeiting a portion of YOUR life for another. You are putting your wants and needs aside to make sure another is encouraged, blessed or interceded for!!

Think about it. Yes, Jesus died that the debt we owed would be satisfied, but He didn’t stay DEAD! He is STILL giving His life for us!! He is standing at the right-hand of the Father, constantly interceding AND advocating before the Father on our behalf! If we are to follow the example of Jesus, isn’t that the greater example?

We can enter into the Throne room of the Almighty, (where Jesus is standing) and we can come boldly to the Throne of God and intercede on the behalf of others! (Hebrews 4:16, 10:19). See, Jesus is still living His life in service for others. By example, we can do the same.

So what does this have to do with 2 Timothy and the concept of fear? Simple, and hear me out; we have all had “hands laid on us.” Maybe not all by man, but by the Holy Spirit who is the originator distributor of our individual gifts that enable us to serve! So we know from this that we have a job, a mission to accomplish, but here is where Paul continues to exhort Timothy and to us on a very important and powerful spiritual principle: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

Any fear, any doubt, any indecision that disables is not of God, but is of the enemy of mankind’s soul. The enemy, yes, the devil, known as “the thief” only comes to rob, to destroy and to kill us. (John 10:10). If he is able to accomplish that goal, if he is able to kill or disable us, how then are we, as Ambassadors and disciples of Christ, able to give our lives in the pursuit of other’s needs? So – you have to first realize and recognize that fear is not of God. Second, if it is not of God, then no matter where the fear comes from, the devil or the world, it has NO power over you, “because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” – 1 John 4:4.

Now recognizing what is NOT from God Almighty, let’s look at what God, our loving Heavenly Father DOES give us. Paul writes to Timothy, God gives us “power, love and a sound or disciplined mind.” Power to overcome not just the lies of the enemy, but also the barbs and spears and to continue forward when things look bleak. Power to LOVE in a super-natural, Godly way; not with mere feelings but with decisive action. Then on top of that power, He gives us the ability to actually LOVE as He commands and desires us too. Why, because “And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.” – 1 John 4:16.

By giving us HIS love, we are abiding in Him and He in us. Power to Love and Love is Power. But it doesn’t stop there. He gives us a sound or disciplined mind. We have become “new creatures” in Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:17). We are no longer of the selfish nature which is the opposite of Godly love, but now created and reignited within us is a caring, compassionate and loving nature. This is reflected in the transformation of our mind and the things we choose to think on.

Paul also wrote this to the Romans. “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” – Romans 12:1-2.

Do you see the point I was making in this Scripture? We present our bodies, our very usefulness as a LIVING SACRIFICE, just as Jesus is even now still doing. But furthermore, our minds themselves are transformed by this renewal. We come out of those old ways and our thoughts are alive and more sure (more disciplined); why? Because we have super-natural, spiritual Power and Love which by their very existence chases away fear! These are the awesome gifts given freely from a Heavenly Father who truly loves us in ways we can only imagine!

So, whomever is reading this, or whomever this is for (in a personal way), don’t accept fear, don’t nourish it, don’t even entertain it, for fear IS the enemy’s tool. Remember, it’s just a tool, not truly a weapon. You must grasp it, accept it, AND utilize it for it to work as a power over you. The truth is you do NOT have to hang on to fear. But the Power, the Love, and the Sound mind ARE weapons in the hands of a people whose Lord (and Master) is God Almighty!

My sincere and greatest prayer is that this encourages and emboldens you. The Lord loves you, more than you can ever know, imagine or even comprehend. Our corruptible flesh, including our brain that is just another fleshly organ, can only comprehend and grasp so much. But what little we are able to comprehend, imagine thousands of times more than that, and that is just the tip of God’s love for each of us individually!

So, be encouraged, be inspired, be comforted and be at peace, but – do not be afraid!
