Migrating Birds In a Cage . . .

When the birds are migrating in flocks to other lands, and the instinct is strong upon them, if you catch one and imprison it in a cage, it will beat its breast against the bars and pant back and forth. But let the migratory season pass, you may open the cage and the bird will not fly. You may even take it and throw it up into the air, but it will fall back limp to the ground. The tug on that little heart is gone. For a soul, for a nation, and I suppose even for a world there comes a time when the tug of the Holy Ghost at the heart may pass forever, if they know not the time of their visitation.

Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith . . . having their own conscience seared with a hot iron. – 1 Timothy 4:1-2

The Gateway To The Kingdom – Oswald Chambers

thought of day header

For Thursday July 21, 2022:

THE GATEWAY TO THE KINGDOM

Matthew 5:3 (NKJV)
“Blessed are the poor in spirit.”

Beware of placing Our Lord as a Teacher first. If Jesus Christ is a Teacher only, then all He can do is to tantalize me by erecting a standard I cannot attain. What is the use of presenting me with an ideal I cannot possibly come near? I am happier without knowing it. What is the good of telling me to be what I never can be—to be pure in heart, to do more than my duty, to be perfectly devoted to God? I must know Jesus Christ as Saviour before His teaching has any meaning for me other than that of an ideal which leads to despair. But when I am born again of the Spirit of God, I know that Jesus Christ did not come to teach only: He came to make me what He teaches I should be. The Redemption means that Jesus Christ can put into any man the disposition that ruled His own life, and all the standards God gives are based on that disposition.

The teaching of the Sermon on the Mount produces despair in the natural man—the very thing Jesus means it to do. As long as we have a self-righteous, conceited notion that we can carry out Our Lord’s teaching, God will allow us to go on until we break our ignorance over some obstacle, then we are willing to come to Him as paupers and receive from Him. ‘Blessed are the paupers in spirit,’ that is the first principle in the kingdom of God. The bedrock in Jesus Christ’s kingdom is poverty, not possession; not decisions for Jesus Christ, but a sense of absolute futility—‘I cannot begin to do it.’ Then Jesus says—‘Blessed are you.’ That is the entrance, and it does take us a long while to believe we are poor! The knowledge of our own poverty brings us on to the moral frontier where Jesus Christ works.

Reflecting With God 7/21/2022

For Thursday July 21, 2022:

The LORD said to him, “What is that in your hand?”
He said, “A rod.” – Exodus 4:2.

It was probably only a shepherd’s crook. What a history, however, awaited it! It was to be stretched out over the Red Sea, pointing a pathway through its depths; to smite the flinty rock; to win victory over the hosts of Amalek; to be known as the rod of God. When God wants an implement for His service He does not choose the golden scepter, but a shepherd’s crook; the weakest and meanest thing He can find—a ram’s horn, a cake of barley meal, an ox-goad, an earthen pitcher, a shepherd’s sling.… A rod with God behind it is mightier than the vastest army.

Daily Prayer & Praise 7/20/2022

Prayer for Wednesday 7-20-2022

Lord our God, You want to be our God and You want us to be Your people. Give us the inner integrity and the power to discern and reject what does not come from the heart, so that everything may be genuine among us. Then no lies and deception will creep in, and honesty and goodness will flow from our hearts to the glory of truth, to the glory of the gospel and the great hope You give us through the gospel. Guard our hearts. Protect the good that is planted in them by Your Holy Spirit, that it may grow and thrive and bear fruit. To the glory of Your Son, our Lord and in His name we ask.

Amen.

Which Really Is The Bottom?

A jumbled, confusing directive was recently issued by the British Admiralty. It read: “It is necessary for technical reasons, that these warheads be stored bottom-side-up, that is, with the top at the bottom and the bottom at the top. That there be no doubt which is the bottom, and which is the top, each warhead has been labeled with the word top!”

“And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity. – Luke 21:25

Psalm 45:10 – A.B. Simpson

thought of day header

For Wednesday July 20, 2022:

PSALM 45:10

Psalm 45:10 (NKJV)
Forget your own people also.

We, too, like the ancient Levites, must be “consecrated every one upon our son and upon our brother,” and “forget our kindred and our father’s house” in every sense in which they could hinder our full liberty and service for the Lord. We, too, must let our business go if it stands between us and the Lord, and in any case let it henceforth be His business and His alone, pursued for Him, controlled by Him, and its profits wholly dedicated to Him, and used as He shall direct. And, like James and John, you must be willing to give up “the hired servants” too. It will make a great difference in your way of living. It will be a change to give up your ease and luxury, your being waited upon and indulged in every wish, and have to do your own work, to give up the attentions of others, to put with privations, and inconveniences, and humiliations, but it will be easy to do it with Him. He never owned a foot of land. He never rode in a carriage. He never had a hired servant. He lay down at last in a borrowed grave. But He is rich enough now, and so will you be some day if you can only be willing to suffer and to wait.

For Wednesday July 20, 2022:

“Come now . . . and I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring My people . . . out of Egypt.” – Exodus 3:10.

None of us can tell for what God is educating us. We fret and murmur at the narrow round and daily task of ordinary life, not realizing that it is only thus, that we can be prepared for the high and holy office which awaits us. We must descend before we can ascend. We must suffer, if we would reign. We must take the via crucis (way of the cross) submissively and patiently if we would tread the via lucis (way of light). We must endure the polishing if we would be shafts in the quiver of Emmanuel. God’s will comes to thee and me in daily circumstances, in little things equally as in great: meet them bravely; be at your best always, though the occasion be one of the very least; dignify the smallest summons by the greatness of your response.

We Need Revival!

Pastor’s Note: This is an excerpt from one of my favorite “classical” preachers and authors, R. A. Torrey. I’ve been reading several of his short books on different subjects and I just finished one on prayer. At the very end, he speaks of the importance of praying for general, worldwide revival.

Now you have to understand something, Torrey died in October of 1928, almost a century ago and when he speaks of the condition of the world in regards to the need for revival, we HAVE to consider the state of the world and how much worse it is today.

After reading his thoughts and teachings on prayer, I can’t help but admit being convicted. I thought I prayed often, but I have been misleading myself as I’m sure many of my current peers have as well. I love prayer. I love the communion with our Heavenly Father and I’m not talking about just petitions either. Yet in the light of Torrey’s teaching, I feel I have fallen way, way too short.

But I digress. This is about the state of the world and the need for TRUE revival all over the world and the only way to get it will be through fervent, earnest prayer to the Lord Almighty in Whom nothing, absolutely nothing is impossible.

pd we need revival

Excerpt From How To Pray, by R. A. Torrey

Now look at the state of the world.

There is lack of conviction of sin. Seldom are men overwhelmed with a sense of their awful guilt in trampling under foot the Son of God. Sin is regarded as a “misfortune” or as “infirmity,” or even as “good in the making”; seldom as enormous wrong against a holy God.

Unbelief is rampant. Many regard it as a mark of intellectual superiority to reject the Bible, and even faith in God and immortality. It is about the only mark of intellectual superiority many possess, and perhaps that is the reason they cling to it so tenaciously.

Hand in hand with this widespread infidelity goes gross immorality, as has always been the case. Infidelity and immorality are Siamese twins. They always exist and always grow and always fatten together. This prevailing immorality is found everywhere.

Greed for money has become a mania with rich and poor. The multimillionaire will often sell his soul and trample the rights of his fellow men under foot in the mad hope of becoming a billionaire and the laboring man will often commit murder to increase the power of the union and keep up wages. Wars are waged and men shot down like dogs to improve commerce and to gain political prestige for unprincipled politicians who parade as statesmen.

The licentiousness of the day lifts its serpent head everywhere. You see it in the newspapers, you see it on the billboards. You see it on the streets at night. You see it just outside the church door. You find it not only in the awful cesspools set apart for it in the great cities, but it is crowding further and further up our business streets and into the residence portions of our cities. The moral condition of the world in our day is disgusting, sickening, appalling.

We need a revival, deep, widespread, general, in the power of the Holy Ghost. It is either a general revival or the dissolution of the church, of the home, of the state. A revival, new life from God, is the cure, and the only cure. That will stem the awful tide of immorality and unbelief. Mere argument will not do it; but a wind from Heaven, a new outpouring of the Holy Ghost, a true God-sent revival will.

The need is clear. What then shall we do? Pray. Take up the Psalmist’s prayer, “Revive us again, that thy people may rejoice in thee.” Take up Ezekiel’s prayer, “Come from the four winds, O breath [breath of God], and breathe upon these slain that they may live.” (Ezekiel 37:9). Hark, I hear a noise! Behold a shaking! I can almost feel the breeze upon my cheek. I can almost see the great living army rising to their feet. Shall we not pray and pray and pray and pray, till the Spirit moves and God revives His people?

In Times Such As These ~

*Pastor’s Note: Do you want perfect peace? Have you ever experienced perfected peace? The only way to have it is to put your trust, your heart, mind and spirit, totally on the Lord. Here’s a beautiful way that Sister Deborah Ann of CHRISTian Poetry teaches it! God Bless and enjoy!

CHRISTian Poetry by Deborah Ann – Home

pcp db in times such as these

In times such as these,
we need God’s peace
we need Him each day
more of it to release.

For, without His peace,
it’s so hard to cope
if our minds aren’t filled
with faith, trust and hope.

In times such as these,
we need God’s calm
we need it everyday
to be our soul’s balm.

For, without His calm,
there is only anxiety
that comes from living
in today’s society.

In times such as these,
we need God to release
daily into our hearts . . .
His perfect calm and peace!

~~~~~~~~
Philippians 4:6-7
Be careful for nothing;
but in every thing by prayer
and supplication
with thanksgiving
let your requests be made
known unto God.
And the peace of God,
which passeth all understanding,
shall keep your hearts
and minds through Christ Jesus.
Isaiah 26:3
Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace,
whose mind is stayed on thee:
because he trusteth in thee.
Daily Prayer & Praise 7/19/2022
Prayer for Tuesday 7-19-2022
Lord our God, we rejoice that we may be called Your children. In our weakness we ask You to shelter us in Your hands. Strengthen us in the hope and faith that our lives will surely go the right way, not through our strength but through Your protection and guidance. Grant that through Your Holy Spirit we may come to know more and more that You are with us through all circumstances. Help us to be alert in our daily life and to listen whenever You want to say something to us. Reveal the power and glory of Your Kingdom through Your people, to the glory of Your name, and hasten the coming on earth of all that is good and true. In the name of Your Son, our Redeemer, Jesus Christ.
Amen.
Computerizing The Scriptures
This is already many years old, but Homer Duncan discussed a computer which can assimilate into permanent storage 5 million words per second. Since the Bible has 850 thousand words, this memory is capable of assimilating the entire Bible six times in one second and bringing it out again, word by word, any passage, any verse, any place, on command, in 200-billionth of a second. No errors are allowed. Running at that rate, the unit has to pass a test in which it runs 24 hours without a single error.
“But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end . . . and knowledge shall increase.” – Daniel 12:4
Substitution – C.H. Spurgeon
thought of day header
For Tuesday July 19, 2022:
SUBSTITUTION
2 Corinthians 5:21 (NKJV)
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we
might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Of this God in Christ, our text says that he knew no sin. It does not say that he did not sin; that we know: but it says more than that; he did not know sin; he knew not what sin was. He saw it in others, but he did not know it by experience. He was a perfect stranger to it. It is not barely said, that he did not take sin into his heart, but he did not know it. It was no acquaintance of his. He was the acquaintance of grief; but he was not the acquaintance of sin. He knew no sin of any kind,—no sin of thought, no sin of birth, no original, no actual transgression; no sin of lip, or of hand, did ever Christ commit. He was pure, perfect, spotless; like his own divinity, without spot or blemish, or any such thing. This gracious person, is he who is spoken of in the text. He was a person utterly incapable of committing anything that was wrong. It has been asserted lately, by some ill-judged one, that Christ was capable of sin. I think it was Irving who started some such idea, that if Christ was not capable of sinning, he could not have been capable of virtue. “For,” say they, “if a man must necessarily be good, there is no virtue in his goodness.” Away with their ridiculous nonsense! Is not God necessarily good? And who dares deny that God is virtuous? Are not the glorified spirits in heaven necessarily pure? And yet are they not holy because of that very necessity? Are not the angels, now that they are confirmed, necessarily faultless? And shall any one dare to deny angelic virtue! The thing is not true; it needs no freedom in order to create virtue. Freedom and virtue generally go together; but necessity and virtue are as much brother and sister as freedom and virtue. Jesus Christ was not capable of sin.
Reflecting With God 7/19/2022
reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.
All Scriptures Used are NKJV, New King James Version
For Tuesday July 19, 2022:
She took an ark of bulrushes for him . . . and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank. – Exodus 2:3.
The mother of Moses laid the ark in the flags by the river’s brink. Ay, but before doing so she laid it on the heart of God! She could not have laid it so courageously upon the Nile, if she had not first devoutly laid it upon the care and love of God. We are often surprised at the outward calmness of men who are called upon to do unpleasant and most trying deeds; but could we have seen them in secret we should have known the moral preparation which they underwent before coming out to be seen of men. Be right in the sanctuary if you would be right in the market-place. Be steadfast in prayer if you would be calm in affliction. Start your race from the throne of God itself, if you would run well, and win the prize.
Daily Prayer & Praise 7/18/2022
Prayer for Monday 7-18-2022
Lord our God, we thank You for being among us as our Father, for letting us be Your children on earth. We thank You that as Your children we can find life in spirit and in truth. Grant that each of us may find how our lives on earth can be lifted up by Your Spirit. Your Spirit can bring us what we do not possess, so that our daily work, all our striving and struggling for the outward things of life, may be overcome by what is higher and greater. Your Spirit can keep us from falling into base and petty ways, from getting lost in earthly experiences which do not last, no matter how much they demand our attention. We thank You for all You have done for us, Your children. Continue to help us, that we may continue to serve You every day in gladness and gratitude, to the glory of Your name. In Christ Jesus we sincerely ask these things.
Amen.
The Good Old Days?
Our forefathers did without sugar until the 13th century; without coal fires until the 14th century; without battered bread until the 15th century; without potatoes until the 16th century; without coffee, tea, and soup until the 17th century; without pudding until the 18th century; without eggs, matches, and electricity until the 19th century; without canned goods until the 20th century. Now, what was it we were complaining about?
Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. – Philippians 4:11-12
A New Chapter Began – A.W. Tozer
thought of day header
For Monday July 18, 2022:
A NEW CHAPTER BEGAN
1 Corinthians 15:20 (NKJV)
But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become
the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
Now, when we look at the Gospels we note an odd—and wonderful—thing. An extra chapter is added. Why?
Biography, by its own definition, must confine itself to the record of the life of an individual. That part of the book which deals with the family tree is not biography, but history, and that part which follows the record of the subject’s death is not biography either. It may be appraisal, or eulogy, or criticism, but not biography, for the reason that the “bios” is gone: the subject is dead. The part that tells of his death is properly the last chapter.
The only place in world literature where this order is broken is in the four Gospels. . . .
Then, for the only time in this history of human thought, a biographer adds to his book a new section which is authentic biography and begins to write a chapter to follow the last chapter. This time the story did not end with a funeral. . . .
That next chapter after the last is the source of all the Christian’s hope, for it assures us that our Lord has put death in its place and has delivered us from the ancient curse. Death did not end the activities of our Lord.… After three days, His spirit was reunited with His body and the new chapter began, the chapter which can have no ending.
