“Lord” Chesta In Jail

food for thought header 2
When northern California police arrested Chesta Arthur Mills, Jr., on charges of malicious mischief, he warned them: “I am to be addressed as Lord Chesta, for I am the second son of God and Lord over all churches.”

The prisoner also said he would destroy the Santa Rosa jail, where he was incarcerated, in an earthquake at 10:01 p. m. At 9:58 p. m. an earthquake, centered five miles north of the jail, rumbled through the area.

“Lord Chesta, I’m on your side, brother,” one inmate shouted as howls swept the jail. Although the jail (and the inmates) shook, the building wasn’t destroyed.

Luke 14:23

thought of day header

Wednesday October 26, 2022

Luke 14:23
“Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in.”

In the great parable in the fourteenth chapter of Luke, giving an account of the great supper an ancient lord prepared for his friends and neighbors, and to which, when they asked to be excused, he invited the halt and the lame from the city slums and the lepers from outside the gate, there is a significant picture and object lesson of the program of Christianity in this age.

In the first place, it is obvious to every thoughtful mind that the Master is beginning to excuse the Gospel-hardened people of Christian countries. It is getting constantly more difficult to interest the unsaved of our own land, especially those that have been accustomed to hear the Gospel and the things of Christ. They have asked to be excused from the Gospel feast, and the Lord is excusing them.

At the same time, two remarkable movements indicated in the parable are becoming more and more manifest in our time. One is the Gospel for the slums and the neglected classes at home; the other is the Gospel for the heathen or the neglected classes abroad.

Reflecting With God 10/26/2022

reflecting with God header
Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

Wednesday Reflecting

These were the potters and those who dwell at Netaim and Gederah; there they dwelt with the king for his work. – 1 Chronicles 4:23.

Anywhere and everywhere we may dwell “with the King for His work.” We may be in a very unlikely or unfavorable place for this; it may be in a literal country life, with little enough to be seen of the “goings” of the King around us; it may be among hedges of all sorts, hindrances in all directions; it may be, furthermore, with our hands full of all manner of pottery for our daily task. No matter! The King who placed us “there” will come and dwell there with us; the hedges are all right, or He would soon do away with them; and it does not follow that what seems to hinder our way may not be for its very protection; and as for the pottery, why, that is just exactly what He has seen fit to put into our hands, and therefore it is, for the present, “His work.”

Stay Alert, Stay Vigilant – 5

expository teaching header 1

Scripture Text – Nehemiah 7

A city is much more than walls, gates, and houses; a city is made up of its people. In the first half of Nehemiah’s book, the people existed for the walls; but now the walls must exist for the people. It was time to organize the community so that the citizens could enjoy the quality of life God wanted them to have. God had great things in store for Jerusalem, for one day His Son would walk the city streets, teach in the temple, and ultimately die outside the city walls.

Encouraging Worship – Continued

And some of the heads of the fathers’ houses gave to the work. The governor gave to the treasury one thousand gold drachmas, fifty basins, and five hundred and thirty priestly garments. Some of the heads of the fathers’ houses gave to the treasury of the work twenty thousand gold drachmas, and two thousand two hundred silver minas. And that which the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand gold drachmas, two thousand silver minas, and sixty-seven priestly garments.

So the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, some of the people, the Nethinim, and all Israel dwelt in their cities. When the seventh month came, the children of Israel were in their cities. – Nehemiah 7:70-73.

As we serve the Lord, we must always strive to do our best; but without His help, blessing and anointing, even our best work will never last. “Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the LORD guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain.” – Psalm 127:1. Nehemiah knew that there was a desperate need for the people to come back to the Lord and turn away from their secret sins that were grieving Him. Even though Nehemiah was the official representative of a pagan king, he did everything he could to glorify the God of Israel.

One of the key lessons we can learn from this long chapter is that people are important to God. When God wanted to take the next step in His great plan of redemption, He called a group of Jews to leave the place of exile and return to their own land. He gave them encouragement from the prophets and leadership from the people who feared God most and wanted to honor Him in all they did. The Lord didn’t send a band of angels to do the job; He used common people who were willing to risk their futures on the promises of God.

et - man's importance

Today, God is still calling people to leave their personal “Babylons,” their personal places of exile and follow after Him by faith. The church today is obviously living in a day of “reproach” (Nehemiah 2:17), and there are “ruins and waste” all around us that need to be rebuilt. David himself asked, “If the foundations are destroyed, What can the righteous do?” – Psalm 11:3. The answer is simple and plain: The righteous can rebuild what has been torn down and start over again! If you think that an enemy victory is final, then you have lost your faith in God’s promises. There is always a new beginning for those who are willing seek God’s help and anointing and to pay the price.

Nehemiah, and especially in this section, reminds us that God keeps accounts of His servants. He knows where we came from, what family we belong to, how much we gave, and how much we did for Him; and He calls us by name! When we stand before the Lord, we will have to give an accounting of our lives before we can receive our rewards (Romans 14:7–12); and we want to be able to give a good account. There is not one of us that our Lord is going to “forget.”

A third lesson we must learn is that the Lord is able to keep His work going. The first group of Jewish exiles left Babylon for Judea in 538 B.C. and, in spite of many difficulties and delays, rebuilt the temple and restored the worship. Eighty years later, Ezra and another group returned; and fourteen years after that, Nehemiah arrived and rebuilt the walls and gates. During the days of Zerubbabel, God raised up the Prophets Haggai and Zechariah to give God’s message to His people. No matter how discouraging the situation might be, God is able to accomplish His purposes if we will trust Him and do His will. John Wesley was right when he said that “God buries His workers but continues His work.” We must not be discouraged! God’s work is never finished just because we become frail and unable to continue! We need to remember that, if we truly love God’s perfect will and plans.

Finally, and most important, we must all be sure that we know we are in the family of God. No matter how much the Jews argued or protested, the priests without legitimate genealogies could not enter the temple precincts and minister at the altar. God is not impressed in the eternal scheme of things with our first birth; what He wants is that we experience a second birth and become His children, a people He can call His heirs. If you are not certain of your spiritual genealogy, read John 3:1–18 and 1 John 5:9–13 and make sure that your name is written down in heaven (Luke 10:20; Revelation 21:27).

I’m Asking For Your Help Lord

I’M ASKING FOR YOUR HELP LORD

He’s knocking on my door Lord,
That old devil in disguise.
He’s trying mighty hard Lord,
To tempt me with his lies.

door knocker bullet

He’s whispering in my ear Lord
And I know You gave me a choice,
But he’s whispering soft and gentle Lord
With such a charming voice.

So, I’m asking for Your help Lord,
Through each and every day,
For only with Your help Lord
Can I chase temptation away.

door knocker bullet

You know it’s really hard Lord,
For You were tempted too
But You rebuked that tempter Lord
And I want to be like You.

So help me lock the door Lord
Then throw away the key.
Cease his tempting voice Lord
And let my thoughts dwell on Thee.

door knocker bullet

Let me feel Your loving presence,
Bestow Your sweet, peace on me,
Keep me ever in Your presence,
Now and throughout eternity.

Daily Prayer & Praise 10/25/2022

prayer and praise header 4
Prayer for Tuesday

Lord our God, grant that our spirit may recognize Your Spirit and Your unfailing love, so that our lives cannot be swallowed up by the passing and temporary concerns of this life but are lifted to something higher. Help us hold fast to all the blessings You have not only allowed, but have given us to experience, the blessings You will certainly continue to give, even though new battles and new troubles are always going on all around us. Send a great light to shine among the many people whose task is to lead the way so that Your Kingdom may come and in the coming may be illuminated brighter than the stars. Send light so that Your glorious name may be honored through our human deeds and You may be known and glorified as life abundant for all. Through Jesus Christ who has promised us abundant life, we ask You these things, dear Father.

Amen.

Issuing Passports To Heaven

food for thought header 2
A woman who calls herself “Alice the Prophetess” issued “passports to heaven” to an estimated 100,000 Africans who joined her holy war of rebellion against the Rhodesian government.

The forty-five-year-old woman claimed she died, went to heaven, met the big black god, and came back to earth to preach the truth. Then she whipped her followers into a frenzy by standing with her “Twelve apostles” atop ant hills, playing records of the World War II speeches of Winston Churchill. “Churchill,” she said, “was the voice of God.”

Before her capture by government forces, the fanatical prophetess led bloody attacks that caused the deaths of hundreds of Africans.

Light At Evening Time

thought of day header

Tuesday October 25, 2022

Zechariah 14:7
It shall be one day . . . at evening time it shall happen That it will be light.

God very frequently acts in grace in such a manner that we can find a parallel in nature. For instance, God says, “ . . . as the rain cometh down and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, . . . so shall my word be, . . . it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” We find him speaking concerning the coming of Christ, “He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth.” We find him likening the covenant of grace to the covenant which he made with Noah concerning the seasons, and with man concerning the different revolutions of the year—“Seed-time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.” We find that the works of creation are very frequently the mirror of the works of grace, and that we can draw figures from the world of nature to illustrate the great acts of God in the world of his grace towards his people. But sometimes God oversteps nature. In nature after evening comes night. The sun has had its hours of journeying; the fiery steeds are weary; they must rest. Lo, they descend the azure steeps and plunge their burning fetlocks in the western sea, while night in her dark chariot follows at their heels. God, however, oversteps the rule of nature. He is pleased to send to his people times when the eye of reason expects to see no more day, but fears that the glorious landscape of God’s mercies will be shrouded in the darkness of his forgetfulness. But instead, God overleaps nature, and declares that at evening time, instead of darkness there shall be light.

A portion for each day. – 2 Kings 25:30.

The acts of breathing which I performed yesterday will not keep me alive to-day: I must continue to breathe afresh every moment, or animal life ceases. In like manner, yesterday’s grace and spiritual strength must be renewed, and the Holy Spirit must continue to breathe on my soul from moment to moment, in order to my enjoying the consolations, and to my working the works, of God.

Stay Alert, Stay Vigilant – 4

expository teaching header 1

Scripture Text – Nehemiah 7

A city is much more than walls, gates, and houses; a city is made up of its people. In the first half of Nehemiah’s book, the people existed for the walls; but now the walls must exist for the people. It was time to organize the community so that the citizens could enjoy the quality of life God wanted them to have. God had great things in store for Jerusalem, for one day His Son would walk the city streets, teach in the temple, and ultimately die outside the city walls.

Establishing Citizenship – Continued

Please read Nehemiah 7:4-69 for some background on this section.

The animals were mentioned because they were vitally important to the Jewish agricultural economy and to the work of rebuilding the nation.

The total of the figures in this list is 29,818; but Nehemiah’s total is 42,360. When you add the 7,337 servants and the 245 singers to the 29,818 total, you get a total of 37,400, a difference of almost 5,000 from Nehemiah’s figure. Some of these extra unnumbered people may have been priests who could not prove their genealogy as seen in verses 63–65, as well as others who didn’t fit into any special category. If we knew all the facts about how Ezra 2 and Nehemiah 7 were compiled and copied, we would understand what only appears to be discrepancies.

The important thing is not to count the people but to realize that these people counted. In leaving Babylon, they did much more than put their names on a list. They laid their lives on the altar and risked everything to obey the Lord and restore the Jewish nation. They were true “pioneers of faith” who trusted God to enable them to do what was seemingly the impossible.

Before continuing on, it might be good for all of us or any of us to ask ourselves, “If I had to prove my genealogy in order to get into God’s city, could I do it?” We are all heading for one of two destinies—heaven or hell—and only those who belong to God’s family can enter heaven. Anyone can enter God’s family by receiving Jesus Christ as their own personal Savior, and this alone guarantees our entrance into heaven (John 1:11–12; 3:16; 14:6).

et - jesus the only way

Encouraging Worship

Citizenship and leadership together can make a state, but it takes worship to make that state into a godly nation. John Stuart Mill wrote, “The worth of a state, in the long run, is the worth of the individuals composing it.” But the worth of the individual depends on his or her relationship to God, and this involves worship. If individual godliness declines, the morality of the nation declines. This is so very apparent in the day and age we are living in now.

The parallel passage is Ezra 2:68–70, which tells us that some of the Jewish leaders gave generously to the temple ministry. But Nehemiah informs us that the governor, Tirshatha and some of the common people also gave offerings to the Lord. It was only right that the leaders set the example. A thousand drams would be about 19 pounds of gold, and 20,000 drams would be just about 375 pounds. It seems obvious that some of the Jewish leaders left Babylon very wealthy men, with precious metals and servants; however, within a few years, the economy will be failing and the nation will be in the grips of a crippling depression (see Haggai 1).

But all of this money would have been useless were it not for the God-appointed ministers at the temple: the priests, Levites, singers, and all of the helpers. Moses had assigned special towns for the priests and Levites to live in (Numbers 35:1–8; Joshua 21), but later Nehemiah had to move some of them into Jerusalem (Nehemiah 11:1–2).

It was now the seventh month (October–November), when Israel was expected to celebrate the Feast of Trumpets, the Day of Atonement, and the Feast of Tabernacles (Leviticus 23:23–44). There could have been no better time for Nehemiah to call the people together to honor the Word of God, confess their sins, and to dedicate themselves and their work to the Lord. What began with concern in the beginning led to construction and conflict, but the time was dawning for consecration (chapters 8–12).

I Prayed

I PRAYED

I said a prayer for you today
That all your pain would fade away.
That you would feel His love for you
Surround your soul your whole day through.

I asked the Lord to give you peace
And that your worries would decrease.
I asked for joy and laughter too
And that He’d make your gray skies blue.

on knees praying bullet

I prayed that if you just can’t cope
That He would shower you with hope.
I prayed He’d take away your fears
And that He’d wipe away your tears.

I prayed and asked that you would feel
His gentle hand reach down and heal.
And when you feel down and depressed
I asked the Lord to give you rest.

on knees praying bullet

He knows you may not understand
But He has all of your days planned.
He’ll never leave you this is true
He’s with you every moment through.

We all do struggle in our life
Trials we face that brings us strife.
Just lean on God and others now
And you’ll get through it all somehow.

on knees praying bullet

You see I love you very much
And I pray you feel God’s gentle touch.
Surround your heart and soul each day
As you keep trusting in His way.

I said a prayer down on my knee
That your pain and worries would just flee.
I said a prayer for you today
And everyday for you I’ll pray.

Daily Prayer & Praise 10/24/2022

prayer and praise header 4
Prayer for Monday

Dear Father in Heaven, we thank You that with our poor, faulty, sinful, and death-ridden lives we may continue to find shelter in Your love. We thank You that we are Your children and as Your children we are loved most graciously by You. We thank You that whatever we are, however depressed we are about ourselves and the inadequacy of our own nature, we are still and always will be Your children. Give us Your most gracious Spirit, we pray. Give us Your Holy Spirit, penetrating our whole nature, our flesh and blood, keeping us firm in faith under all temptation and distress, leading us and guiding us through all the twisting paths of life. Give us Your Spirit to fill us with hope as we look to the future, to fill us with certainty in our Lord Jesus Christ, who was, and is, and is to come, whose victory is before our eyes so that we never waver or become afraid. Give us Your Spirit so that we may steadfastly live in this certainty and prepare ourselves more and more for Your coming as King into the world. May we come to know that Your loving-kindness is at work today, that in the end Your deliverance, our redemption, will come quickly, to the glory of Your most precious and holy name. Jesus, name above all other names, through You we pray!

Amen.

A Kenyan Crucifies Self

food for thought header 2
One afternoon in 1965, Daniel Waswa, a citizen of Kenya, struggled up a hill and was crucified by his wife at his own direction. As he hung on the cross, he told the gathered crowd, “I am dying for the sins of all Kenyans.”

After nailing her husband to the cross, the woman collapsed on the ground and died, apparently from shock.

Waswa’s neighbors knew this was no spur-of-the-moment act. He had talked about it for a year and had told them he had been called by God for this purpose.

They begged him to let them take him down. He refused all requests. Finally he was taken down still alive, but he soon died from the nail wounds which had become infected.

Superstitious people now make pilgrimages to the spot where Daniel Waswa died and pray for him to forgive their sins.

The Problem With Science

thought of day header

Monday October 24, 2022

Psalm 14:2
The LORD looks down from heaven upon the children of men,
To see if there are any who understand, who seek God.

When God spoke out of heaven to our Lord, self-centered men who heard it explained it by natural causes, saying, “it thundered” (John 12:29). This habit of explaining the Voice by appeals to natural law is at the very root of modern science. In the living, breathing cosmos there is a mysterious Something, too wonderful, too awful for any mind to understand. The believing man does not claim to understand. He falls to his knees and whispers, “God.” The man of earth kneels also, but not to worship. He kneels to examine, to search, to find the cause and the how of things. Just now we happen to be living in a secular age. Our thought habits are those of the scientist, not those of the worshiper. We are more likely to explain than to adore. “It thundered,” we exclaim, and go our earthly way. But still the Voice sounds and searches. The order and life of the world depend upon that Voice, but men are mostly too busy or too stubborn to give attention.

Monday Reflecting

When the man was let down and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived and stood on his feet. – 2 Kings 13:21.

When men thought him dead, one of Elisha’s bones was worth a whole army of ordinary men. So, if we live with God, and for God, we, too, shall possess a deathless influence, and a spiritual immortality. Our lives will not cease with our funerals, but when men are saying, “He is dead” here, voices shall be calling yonder, “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, for they rest from their labors, and their works do follow them.”

Perfect Rest, God’s Way

Simply put, rest is freedom from work or activity. The source of the Christian doctrine of rest is the rest of God Himself, who, after completing the work of Creation in six days, “rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.” – Genesis 2:2. This provides the basis for the Hebrew Sabbath as the weekly seventh day of rest (sabbath is the Hebrew term for rest), which is presented as an ordinance of Creation. The fourth commandment demands the consecration of the Sabbath day to God and the limitation of labor to six days precisely because God made all things in six days and rested the seventh day (Exodus 20:8–11).

The biblical concept of rest, however, is not just based in the past (Creation) and present (weekly) but also in the future. This future aspect received symbolic expression in the Israelites’ pilgrimage under the leadership of Moses through the wilderness from the bondage of Egypt to the “rest” of the Promised Land. That rest was accomplished under Joshua, who led them into the land and settled them there (see Joshua 23–24).

The 40 years of restless wandering in the wilderness meant that the whole adult generation that set out with Moses perished without entering the Promised Land. This was a judgment they brought upon themselves by their ingratitude and rebelliousness (Numbers 14:26–35). Centuries later God warned their descendants against the danger of following this example of hard-heartedness and reaping a similar consequence of not entering into His rest: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts . . .” (Psalm 95:7–11). The author of Hebrews cites this passage in Psalms (Hebrew 3:7–8; 4:7) as evidence that God’s rest is not a matter of past history but that “the promise of entering His rest remains.” The word “today” indicates that the day of grace is not closed: “For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on. So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.” – Hebrews 4:8-9.

pd - rest of God

It is God’s rest into which all persons are encouraged to enter. The weekly day of rest is just a reminder and a reflection of that rest. The rest of the Israelites in the Promised Land after their wilderness wanderings is a symbol of God’s eternal rest that His people will share. The rest that Christ gives to those who come to Him (Matthew 11:28) is a foretaste and a guarantee of the divine rest that awaits them. The rest after death of believers who have fallen asleep in Christ is a blissful intensification of the reality of this experience: “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord . . . . they may rest from their labors.” – Revelation 14:13. But the completion of this rest in its inexpressible fullness will take place at the return of Christ, when at last all who are His will be fully conformed to His likeness (1 John 3:2). Salvation will finally be achieved as believers are clothed with imperishable, glorified bodies (2 Corinthians 5), and the renewed order of creation in which righteousness dwells will be established (2 Peter 3:13).

This will be the climactic point of all history and the moment of the entry of God’s people into the full and unending enjoyment of His promised rest. The completion of the redemption purchased by Christ at the cross will mean rest and freedom from all sin, and this in turn will mean rest and freedom from all sorrow, pain, suffering, persecution, frustration, injustice, and death (Revelation 7:9–17; 21:1–7). The rest of mankind, moreover, will involve the rest of God’s whole creation as it is brought to the perfection of that glorious destiny for which it was intended from the very beginning (see for example Romans 8:19–25).

Rest, however, is not synonymous with inactivity. What God rested from was the work of Creation. He continues constantly to be active, however, in providentially sustaining all that He has created and in the work both of righteous judgment and gracious salvation. Jesus Christ, indeed, in His incarnation, life, death, rising, and glorification, is precisely God in action (2 Corinthians 5:19). Hence the assertion of Jesus: “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” – John 5:17. What the Christian will rest from is the struggle against the forces of evil and the afflictions by which this present life is marred. The rest into which the Christian will enter will not be a state of uneventful boredom. God Himself is dynamic, not static, and so also is His rest. Since we were created in His likeness, we also will share in that attribute once we enter into that glorious “rest” that is promised.

Consequently, all that a Christian rests from simply sets him free to be active ceaselessly and joyfully in the service of God, the Creator and Redeemer. In perfect harmony with all God’s works, and in complete fulfillment, Christians exultantly praise and serve the triune God. Joy will be full, without possibility of improvement or deficiency (see Revelation 4:8–11; 5:8–14; 7:9–12). Such will be the rest without end of that eternal Sabbath that has a morning but no evening: “Let us therefore strive to enter that rest.” – Hebrews 4:11.

Questions On Bible Prophecy – 7

prophetic words header wp

*Pastor’s Note: We will continue, in no particular order questions posed from the excellent book by Mark Hitchcock entitled, The Complete Book of Bible Prophecy. My hope and prayer is that it will give some insight into much of the end-times prophecy the Bible speaks of and hopefully alleviates some of the fears and confusion people have about studying prophecy. The following is the next in a line of questions I present to you from his book:

Why Isn’t The Word Rapture Found In The Bible?

A few years ago, I was in a restaurant having lunch with a man who had just started attending our church. He was asking me some questions about the last days, and I was telling him about the Rapture. In the middle of our conversation, a man at the table next to us, who had obviously been listening in on our discussion, told me in no uncertain terms that the Rapture is an unbiblical doctrine because the word rapture is not even in the Bible. While he was dead wrong in denying the doctrine of the Rapture, he was absolutely correct in stating that the word rapture is not in the English translations of the Bible.

If you were to read all 727,747 words in the King James Version, or any other well-known translation, you would discover that the word rapture is not there. However, you also wouldn’t find the words Trinity, Bible, or grandfather. Yet we know that all of these things are very real and true.

In 1 Thessalonians 4:17, the words caught up translate the Greek word harpazo, which means “to snatch,” “to seize,” or “to take away.” This word was translated in the Latin versions of Scripture as rapturo, which was brought over to English as Rapture. So while it is true that the word Rapture does not occur in most English translations, the concept or doctrine of a “catching up” of living believers to meet the Lord is clearly stated in 1 Corinthians 15:51–55 and 1 Thessalonians 4:17. This doctrine could just as well be called “the catching up of the church,” “the snatching away of the church,” “the translation of the church,” or “the harpazo of the church.” But since the phrase “rapture of the church” is an excellent description of this event and has become a well-known phrase, there is no reason to change the terminology.

Mr. Hitchcock’s teachings are informative and enlightening as well as inspirational and any book you can get for yourself from his writings will most definitely be well-worth it. I hope you are blessed AND informed and some of these questions and answers will give you a greater strength to walk in confidence and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Bible prophecy ALWAYS points to God and His plans for this world that He created through Christ Jesus. Therefore, for true Christians, it is meant to be a comfort that God continues as always to have everything under control despite what it might appear to the average person.

Positive Authority

life in focus header

AUTHORITY can be used in ways that bring liberty to people, not just limitation.

Authority is sometimes thought of as nothing more than telling others what they cannot do and keeping people in line. But in God’s instruction to Moses (Exodus 6:13), we are reminded that authority can bring freedom when applied wisely under the Lord’s direction.

For example, a judge can use authority to release an innocent person from jail. A high school principal can use authority to obtain resources for teachers to teach effectively. A manager can use authority to reward a worker’s performance and encourage creativity and excellence. So authority can be affirming and supportive rather than controlling and punitive.

Paul exercised a great deal of authority in the early church. But he recognized that his power was given to build others up not to tear them down (1 Corinthians 13:10).

Avoiding Idle Talk

devotionals header

SHUN the gossip of men as much as possible, for discussion of worldly affairs, even though sincere, is a great distraction inasmuch as we are quickly ensnared and captivated by vanity.

Many a time I wish that I had held my peace and had not associated with men. Why, indeed, do we converse and gossip among ourselves when we so seldom part without a troubled conscience? We do so because we seek comfort from one another’s conversation and wish to ease the mind wearied by diverse thoughts. Hence, we talk and think quite fondly of things we like very much or of things we dislike intensely. But, sad to say, we often talk vainly and to no purpose; for this external pleasure effectively bars inward and divine consolation.

Therefore we must watch and pray lest time pass idly.

When the right and opportune moment comes for speaking, say something that will edify.

Bad habits and indifference to spiritual progress do much to remove the guard from the tongue. Devout conversation on spiritual matters, on the contrary, is a great aid to spiritual progress, especially when persons of the same mind and spirit associate together in God.

The Imitation of Christ, by Thomas à Kempis, is a Christian devotional book first composed in Medieval Latin as De Imitatione Christi (c. 1418–1427). The devotional text is divided into four books of detailed spiritual instructions. The devotional approach of The Imitation of Christ emphasizes the interior life and withdrawal from the mundanities of the world, as opposed to the active imitation of Christ practiced by other friars. The Imitation is perhaps the most widely read Christian devotional work after the Bible, and is regarded as a devotional and religious classic. The book was written anonymously in Latin in the Netherlands c. 1418–1427. Its popularity was immediate, and after the first printed edition in 1471-72, it was printed in 745 editions before 1650. Apart from the Bible, no book had been translated into more languages than the Imitation of Christ at the time.
