Hallelujah Chorus’ Custom

On March 23, 1743, when “The Messiah” was first performed in London, the king was present in the great audience. It is reported that all were so deeply moved by the “Hallelujah Chorus” that with the impressive words, “For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth,” the whole audience, including the king sprang to its feet, and remained standing through the entire chorus. From that time to this it has always been the custom to stand during the chorus whenever it is performed. With spontaneous joy the soul stands to salute Him who “cometh in the name of the Lord.” He is “King of kings, and Lord of lords” and to Him we pledge allegiance.

The Form and Spirit of Religion

thought of day header

Tuesday April 4, 2023

1 Samuel 4:3
“Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD from Shiloh to us, that when
it comes among us it may save us from the hand of our enemies.”

How vain are the hopes that men build upon their good works, and ceremonial observances! How frightful is that delusion which teaches for the gospel a thing which is not “the gospel”, nor “another gospel”; but it is a thing that would pervert the gospel of Christ. Let me ask thee solemnly, what is thy ground of hope? Dost thou rely on baptism? O man, how foolish thou art! What can a few drops of water, put upon an infant’s forehead, do? Some lying hypocrites tell us that children are regenerated by drops of water. What kind of regeneration is that? We have seen people hanged that were regenerated in this fashion. There have been men that have lived all their lives as whoremongers, adulterers, thieves, and murderers, who have been regenerated in their baptism by that kind of regeneration. Oh, be not deceived by a regeneration so absurd, so palpable even to flesh and blood, as one of the lying wonders that have come from hell itself. But maybe thou sayest, “Sir, I rely upon my baptism, in after life.” Ah, my friends, what can washing in water do? As the Lord liveth, if thou trustest in baptism thou trustest in a thing that will fail thee at last. For what is washing in water, unless it is preceded by faith and repentance? We baptize you, not in order to wash away your sins, but because we believe they are washed away beforehand; and if we did not think you believed so, we would not admit you to a participation in that ordinance. But if you will pervert this to your own destruction, by trusting in it, take heed; you are warned this morning. For as “circumcision availeth nothing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature,” so baptism availeth nothing.

Reflecting With God 4/04/2023

Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

Tuesday Reflecting

It will be well with those who fear God. – Ecclesiastes 8:12.

A quiet modest word, but full of significance. The fear of God took Abraham to Mount Moriah, and it was well with him there. It was not the fear of God that took Lot to Sodom; it went not well with him there. The fear of God took Daniel into the lion’s den, and the three Hebrews into the seven times heated furnace; they feared Him Who had the power to cast both soul and body into hell; and it was well with them. The Spirit of glory and of God resteth as a dove upon them that fear God; invisible to the world; telling of the new Jerusalem that cometh down from God out of heaven.

Daily Prayer & Praise 4/04/2023

prayer and praise header 4
Lord, hear our prayer:

Lord, we come, called by your love and led by our need, challenged by Christ’s life and aware of our weakness, filled with hope in his death and resurrection, longing to be filled with the power of the Spirit. Lord, we come, for Jesus invites us and brings us home. We long to fulfill your perfect will and will always look to your Holy Spirit for guidance. In Jesus’ name we pray.

Amen.

Praise The Lord 4/03/2023

A Hymn of Praise to the LORD

The LORD made the earth by his power,
and he preserves it by his wisdom.
With his own understanding
     he stretched out the heavens.
When he speaks in the thunder,
     the heavens roar with rain.
He causes the clouds to rise over the earth.
He sends the lightning with the rain
and releases the wind from his storehouses.

The whole human race is foolish and has no knowledge!
The craftsmen are disgraced by the idols they make,
for their carefully shaped works are a fraud.
These idols have no breath or power.
Idols are worthless; they are ridiculous lies!
On the day of reckoning they will all be destroyed.
But the God of Israel is no idol!
He is the Creator of everything that exists,
including his people, his own special possession.
The LORD of Heaven’s Armies is his name!

Christ Intercedes For Us

pastor's desk header

Romans 8:34:

Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. (NKJV).

Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us. (NLT)

A dual intercession keeps the believer secure in Christ Jesus: the Holy Spirit intercedes (Romans 8:26–27) and the Son of God intercedes (Romans 8:34). The same Saviour who died for us is even now interceding for us in heaven. As our High Priest, He can give us the grace we need to overcome temptation and defeat the enemy (Hebrews 4:14–16). As our Advocate, He can forgive our sins and restore our fellowship with God (1 John 1:9–2:2). Intercession means that Jesus Christ represents us before the throne of God and we do not have to represent ourselves since we cannot without Him.

Paul hinted at this ministry of intercession in Romans 5:9–10. We are not only saved by His death, but we are also saved by His life. “Therefore He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them.” – Hebrews 7:25 (NIV). Peter sinned against the Lord, but he was forgiven and restored to fellowship because of Jesus Christ. And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail.” – Luke 22:31–32 (NLT). He is interceding for each of us, a ministry that assures us that we are secure in Him into eternity.

Spiritual Nuggets 4/03/2023

Finding Comfort In a Cynic’s Words

“I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after the wind” (Ecclesiastes 1:14). These aren’t exactly the words you want to hear in the morning—look who woke up on the wrong side of the bed. The intention behind them, though, is actually quite comforting.

The Preacher in Ecclesiastes goes on to prove that he doesn’t need counseling, but instead should be our counselor: “What is crooked cannot be made straight, and what is lacking cannot be counted . . . I have acquired great wisdom . . . [But] in much wisdom is much vexation, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow” (Ecclesiastes 1:15–16, 18). And although we may want to deny this fact, it’s a truism that haunts all great people: we may help the hurting people in our world, but we will never be able to end the pain and knowledge alone will simply not get us there. Words on paper are not the solution. A manifesto, like the Declaration of Independence, may prompt great change, but what is it without action? It is vanity. It’s a striving after the wind.

Delusion of importance has crushed many great people’s efforts. In fact, I would go so far as to say that it’s what keeps most people from becoming what God wants them to be. And it’s not just the delusion of grandeur; it’s the delusion of insignificance or the distraction of focus. You become what you do, and what you think, write, speak, or feel, is meaningless if it’s not what you do.

We as Christians are meant to act. As Jesus says, “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes tasteless, by what will it be made salty? It is good for nothing any longer except to be thrown outside and trampled underfoot by people” (Matthew 5:13). If we are salt, let’s be salty. If we are light, let’s shine brightly (Matthew 5:14). Anything other than that is vain. It’s searching for knowledge for knowledge’s sake. It leaves both us and the world empty.

There is comfort to be found in the Preacher of Ecclesiastes’ words in that he is telling us, albeit through harshness and well-put cynicism, that we’re meant for more than we usually recognize. He calls us to rise to that: to shun the unimportant and focus on God’s work. What good is wisdom and knowledge if it’s not for that purpose?

Haydn’s Response To Acclaim

In 1808, just a year before the death of Franz Joseph Haydn, a grand performance of his outstanding oratorio The Creation took place in Vienna. The composer himself was there for the occasion. Old and feeble, he was brought into the great hall in a wheelchair. His presence caused an electrifying enthusiasm in the audience. As the orchestra and chorus burst forth with full power into the passage, “And there was light,” a crescendo of applause broke out.

Moved by this response, the elderly musician struggled to his feet. Summoning all his strength, he raised his trembling arms upward, crying, “No, No! Not from me, but from thence—from Heaven above comes all!” Although he fell back exhausted in his chair and had to be carried from the hall, the old master had made his point in a dramatic and unforgettable manner.

A Journey Into God

thought of day header

Monday April 3, 2023

Ephesians 1:18
The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope
of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints.

The Church will come out of her doldrums when we find out that salvation is not a lightbulb only, that it is not an insurance policy against hell only, but that it is a gateway into God and that God is all that we would have and can desire. Again I quote [Lady] Julian: “I saw that God is to us everything that is good and comfortable. He is our clothing; His love wrappeth us and claspeth us and all encloseth us for His tender love, that He may never leave us, being to us all that is good.”

Christianity is a gateway into God. And then when you get into God, “with Christ in God,” then you’re on a journey into infinity, into infinitude. There is no limit and no place to stop. There isn’t just one work of grace, or a second work or a third work, and then that’s it. There are numberless experiences and spiritual epochs and crises that can take place in your life while you are journeying out into the heart of God in Christ.

Thinking, praying, reading, studying the Bible – when we do these things, we are reflecting on the Word of God. To reflect is to contemplate and/or consider, and God wants us to deeply reflect on His Word so that we can better understand Him.

Monday Reflecting

I know that nothing is better for them than to . . . do good in their lives. – Ecclesiastes 3:12.

See that well on the mountain-side,—a small, rude, rocky cup full of crystal water, and that tiny rill flowing through a breach in its brim. The vessel is so diminutive, that it could not contain a supply of water for a single family a single day. But ever getting through secret channels, and ever giving by an open overflow, day and night, summer and winter, from year to year, it discharges in the aggregate a volume to which its own capacity bears no appreciable proportion. The flow from that diminutive cup might, in a drought or war, become life to all the inhabitants of a city. It is thus that a Christian, if he is full of mercy and good fruits, is a greater blessing to the world than either himself or his neighbors deem.

Be Still and Know That I Am God!

pastor's desk header

Psalm 46:10:

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” (NKJV)

“Stop striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted on the earth.” (NASB)

“Stop your fighting – and know that I am God, exalted among the nations, exalted on the earth.” (HCSB)

The command to BE STILL is from the term raphah, which means in the original language, “to release” or “let go.” God commands the forces of chaos, in reference to the previous verses 2-3,  and the nations, in reference to verse 6, to stop their raging and recognize Him and Him alone as God, the ultimate Ruler and Sovereign over all the earth.

As you can see in the New American Standard Bible, and the Holman Christian Standard Bible, they render the term raphah into it’s more contextual sense. STILL yourself or REST yourself from striving or still, rest yourself from fighting, which gives more sense to the context when you consider the references that the Lord is making in relation to natural upheavals as well as national upheavals.

pd be still

The command that He is telling ALL mankind is to KNOW, to acknowledge that He is God, ultimately the sovereign and reigning Lord over all!

We often times quote this Scripture from the older versions and especially the King James and we don’t always get the more powerful connotation of what God is telling us to consider. He doesn’t want His creation to just sit back complacently or apathetically in the superficial knowledge that, yes, He is the Creator of all, but rather, He wants us to deeply AND intimately have the depth of knowledge that He and He alone is in control of ALL circumstances no matter how trivial or how great they are!

Psalm 46 is a powerful statement as to God’s ability to take care of those who seek refuge in Him and at the same time should put fear into those who choose to reject His Lordship in the earth, both natural and humankind!

When we find ourselves going through personal turmoil, it should be a GREAT comfort and assurance to truly KNOW that God is still and always has been on His Throne! He cares and loves those who truly recognize Him as God over all. This is what the Bible refers to as “the fear (or awe) of the Lord!”

No matter where you find yourself in this world, and no matter the circumstances you find yourself in, always remember Psalm 46 and take comfort in the fact that the God that David describes as absolute and Sovereign, is also YOUR Heavenly Father!

So, in closing, remember, there is no reason to strive against all you see around you and there is absolutely no reason to fight the ways of the world, for your Heavenly Father IS God and He wants you to be still and rest in the KNOWLEDGE that He is God and the nations and the earth itself will bow down before Him! Amen and AMEN!

Jesus Is Coming Again! – 2

prophetic words header wp

Scripture Text – Matthew 24:3-14

Pastor’s Note: Please keep in mind that as you read these various circumstances prophesied by Jesus, M. R. De Haan wrote and commented abut these things back in 1944.

1. False Messiahs and Christs

Never before in the history of the world has there been so much deception practiced by those who claim to be the saviors of civilization and of the world. It is said that in the last one hundred years there have been no less than thirty-six men who have claimed to be the Messiah, and these have deluded millions. Today there are an undetermined number of men and even women who claim deity, who call themselves by divine titles and say they are messiahs and christs.

2. Wars and Rumors of Wars

This second sign surely needs no comment at this time. With two-thirds or more of the world in the bondage of declared or undeclared war, the world is facing the greatest military crisis in all its history. With the modern implements of war the gravity of any war is multiplied beyond computation. Amid all this carnage and war there is a constant stream of rumors of more wars. The nations which are not actually in the conflict are full of fear and doubt. Seeing the handwriting on the wall, they, too, are preparing as feverishly for war as though they were actually at war. Today the whole world is an armed camp and sane men are shaking their heads and asking the question, “What will be the outcome of this?”

pw coming again 2

3. Famines and Pestilences

These two always appear to follow in the wake of war. In China, millions have died of starvation and pestilence. We have received ominous reports from Europe concerning many of the peoples ruthlessly conquered by the Satan-inspired totalitarian dictators. A few months from now we may understand more fully what Jesus meant when He said, “And there will be famines, [and] pestilences.”

4. Earthquakes in Various Places

“Earthquakes.” How familiar that word sounds in the light of the recent newspaper reports from every section of the globe, many from parts of the world where earthquakes had heretofore been unknown. Scientists tell us that the numbers of earthquakes are rapidly on the increase. Even though it is admitted that modern scientific instruments and seismographs have made it easier to detect slight and otherwise imperceptible shocks, it is still a fact that there have been far more earthquakes in the past twenty-five years than in any other corresponding length of time in history. In view of this Jesus’ words are very significant. He said, “Earthquakes, in various places.” The meaning of this expression is that there will be earthquakes in several places at the same time. This has never happened until recently. During the great Turkish earthquakes (from 1939-1944) which took tens of thousands of lives and resulted in countless millions of dollars’ damage, the scientists reported that the initial earthquakes were not the only ones which occurred on the day they took place, but with them, almost simultaneously, were shocks of varying severity felt in several other parts of the globe, as far away as North and South America. How significant this is in the light of Jesus’ words, “Earthquakes, in various places.” We seem to be living in the very days of which Jesus spoke. To my knowledge, (as of 1944) there is no other record in history of a similar phenomenon. Surely we must heed the words of the Savior: “Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” – Luke 21:28.

To Be Continued

Faith From The Beginning 4/01/2023

Introduction To Faith

Pastor’s Note: The Bible tells us that “without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” – Hebrews 11:6. What better way to grow and learn about faith than from the one known as the Father of Faith, Abraham. I hope this series will inspire and encourage everyone. God Bless!

SALVATION is by the grace of God, appropriated by faith in the promises of God and applied to the sinner by the Spirit of God. We are saved by grace, and kept by grace and are all received through simple faith in the Word of the living God. The Bible teaches no other salvation than this. No wonder then that the enemy of our souls seeks to corrupt the simple message of faith by the addition of all sorts of human works, religion, ceremony, emotions, and deeds of the law.

Within the past few years there has been a greatly accelerated increase in the number of cults and sects which preach grace plus works, and faith plus human effort as a means to salvation rather than the testimony of salvation. My prayer is that this series on faith may be blessed by the Holy Spirit in showing many the error of adding man’s efforts to the finished work of Christ.

The record of Abraham is especially used by the Holy Spirit to instruct us in the life of faith. Abraham is called the “father of the faithful,” and the “friend of God.” Abraham, however, is not an example of perfect faith, nor even of normal faith, but rather a picture of the average life that can be lived IN faith.

Genesis 11:31-32:

And Terah took his son Abram and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram’s wife, and they went out with them from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan; and they came to Haran and dwelt there. So the days of Terah were two hundred and five years, and Terah died in Haran.

Here we are introduced to Abram, not yet known as father Abraham, who will be later called in Scripture the “friend of God” and “the father of the faithful.” We are introduced to the very beginning of the one who is to become the father of the nation of Israel and the spiritual father of all true believers who put their trust in the One true God; to this man who, with his descendants, is the subject of the whole Bible revelation; and who, with his son, Isaac, his grandson, Jacob, and his great grandson, Joseph, dominates all the rest of the book of Genesis. The importance of this man who becomes the Abraham we have come to know may be seen in the prominent place which the Holy Spirit gives to him in the very first book of the Bible.

Classic Poetry 4/01/2023

*Pastor’s Note: A.B. Simpson was a very well respected Canadian preacher, theologian and author who lived from December 15, 1843 to October 29, 1919. My prayer is that you will be blessed and inspired by his poetry as much as I am.

JESUS ONLY

Jesus only is our Message,
Jesus all our theme shall be;
We will lift up Jesus ever,
Jesus only will we see.

Jesus only is our Saviour,
All our guilt He bore away,
All our righteousness, He gives us,
All our strength from day to day.

Jesus is our Sanctifier,
Cleansing us from self and sin,
And with all His Spirit’s fulness
Filling all our hearts within.

Jesus only is our Healer,
All our sicknesses He bare,
And His risen life and fulness
All His members still may share.

Jesus only is our Power,
His the gift of Pentecost;
Jesus, breathe Thy power upon us,
Fill us with the Holy Ghost.

And for Jesus we are waiting,
Listening for the Advent Call;
But ’twill still be Jesus only,
Jesus ever, all in all.

Jesus only! Jesus ever!
Jesus all in all we sing!
Saviour, Sanctifier, Healer,
Glorious Lord, and Coming King!

The Necessity of Holiness – 5

great sermons header

j.c. ryle wp gsp

John Charles Ryle (May 10, 1816 – June 10, 1900) was an evangelical Anglican clergyman and first Bishop of Liverpool. He was renowned for his powerful preaching and extensive tracts. John C. Ryle was a big man, physically, intellectually, scripturally and spiritually. The fact is that Ryle, though very definitely a Victorian of the Victorians, seemed to be able to leave behind him the verbosity and sentimentality of many of his contemporaries so that his writings still speak today, not only to the older generations, but to younger Christians as well.

The Necessity of Holiness – 5

Follow . . . holiness, without which no one will see the Lord. – Hebrews 12:14.

What true practical holiness is, what sort of persons are those whom God calls holy – continued.

From last week: (l) Last, but not least, a holy man will follow after spiritual mindedness. He will endeavor to set his affections entirely on things above, and to hold things on earth with a very loose hand. . . . He will aim to live like one whose treasure is in heaven . . . to commune with God in prayer, in the Bible, and in the assembly of His people.

The history of the brightest saints that ever lived will contain many a “but,” and “howbeit,” and “notwithstanding,” before you reach the end. The gold will never be without some dross, the light will never shine without some clouds, until we reach the heavenly Jerusalem. The sun itself has spots upon its face. The holiest men have many a blemish and defect when weighed in the balance of the sanctuary. Their life is a continual warfare with sin, the world, and the devil; and sometimes you will see them not overcoming, but overcome. The flesh is ever lusting against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh, and “we all stumble in many things” (Galatians 5:17; James 3:2).

But still, for all this, I am sure that to have such a character as I have faintly drawn, is the heart’s desire and prayer of all true Christians. They press towards it, if they do not reach it. They may not attain to it, but they always aim at it. It is what they strive and labor to be, if it is not what they are.

And this I do boldly and confidently say, that true holiness is a great reality. It is something in a man that can be seen, and known, and marked, and felt by all around him. It is light: if it exists, it will show itself. It is salt: if it exists, its savor will be perceived. It is a precious ointment: if it exists, its presence cannot be hid.

I am sure we should all be ready to make allowance for some backsliding, for some occasional deadness in professing Christians. I know a road may lead from one point to another, and yet have many a winding and turn; and a man may be truly holy, and yet be drawn aside by many an infirmity. Gold is not the less gold because mingled with alloy, nor light the less light because faint and dim, nor grace the less grace because young and weak. But after every allowance, I cannot see how any man deserves to be called “holy,” who willfully allows himself in sins, and is not humbled and ashamed because of them. I dare not call any one “holy” who makes a habit of willfully neglecting known duties, and willfully doing what he knows God has commanded him not to do. John Owen, the brilliant Puritan theologian, stated:

“I do not understand how a man can be a true believer unto whom sin is not the greatest burden, sorrow, and trouble.”

Such are the leading characteristics of practical holiness. Let us examine ourselves and see whether we are acquainted with it. Let us prove our own selves.

The Cushion of The Sea

thought of day header

For Saturday April 1, 2023

Psalm 46:10
Be still, and know that I am God.

A number of years ago, a submarine being tested had to be submerged for several hours. Upon returning to harbor, the captain was asked, “How did that terrible storm last night affect you?” Surprised, the captain exclaimed, “Storm? We didn’t even know there was one!” Their submarine was so far beneath the surface that it had reached what sailors refer to as “the cushion of the sea”—a depth at which the waters are never stirred, despite any commotion on the surface.

In our fast-paced world, it is a challenge to slow down and remember that God is in control. We are a society of do-everything, go-everywhere, get-it-done people who mistakenly believe we can handle everything if we just keep going. In reality, we need to become so submerged in God’s peace that no matter what’s happening in our lives, we are able to remain as calm as “the cushion of the sea.”

If you feel overwhelmed, bogged down, or burned out, add one more activity to your daily schedule: spend time with almighty God. That is the only way to reach the depth needed to find true calm in the midst of any storm.

In the name of Jesus Christ, who was never in a hurry, we pray,
O God, that You will slow us down, for we know that we live too fast.

Sparing No Expense

WHENEVER modern-day churches draw up plans and budgets for buildings in which to worship, they face an age-old tension: what is appropriate in terms of size, materials, beauty, and expense? For Solomon, there seems to have been only one answer to that question as he proposed to build God’s temple: spare no expense!

A more lavish building project has rarely been seen. The cost of such a venture today would be virtually incalculable. Was Solomon justified in incurring such an expense? The question is not easily answered.

On one hand, the project contributed to a number of economic and other problems of Solomon’s reign such as heavy taxation, a growing underclass of foreigners, and the depletion of the forests of Lebanon. The temple was by no means the sole cause of these troubles (1 Kings 9:15–19), but it was built with a policy of “only the best,” which seemed to typify the Solomonic empire. Even “silver . . . was accounted as nothing in the days of Solomon” (1 Kings 10:21).

On the other hand, Solomon apparently recognized that architecture is not neutral; it makes a statement. In fact, to the extent that temples and church sanctuaries follow (or sometimes dispense with) architectural forms and principles, they are works of art. Solomon’s temple was a remarkable work of art, built to the glory of God (1 Kings 8:12-13). Was it built to the glory of Solomon as well? Probably, since most great works of architecture are monuments to those who build them. Yet God apparently approved of Solomon’s achievement, for He blessed the sanctuary with His presence (1 Kings 8:10-11).

Yet even as the construction went forward, the Lord reminded His builder that what mattered was not a house of cedar and gold, but keeping the Law (1 Kings 6:11–13). Perhaps that is the most important architectural principle of all when it comes to houses of worship: it is not the size, beauty, or costliness of the structure, but the sincere devotion and obedience of those who worship in the structure. After all, the Lord does not dwell only in sanctuaries built by people, but in the people themselves (1 Kings 8:27; Acts 7:48; 17:24; 1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

The Need To Stay Clean

Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. – Psalm 51:7.

(The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders. When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.) – Mark 7:3-4.

The houses of Tudor England were filthy, germ-infested disease traps, with fleas and lice everywhere. People seldom took baths and clothing was truly clean only when it was new—washer women “cleaned” with cow dung, hemlock, and remnants of soap. The streets were worse. Unpaved and rutted, they were either muddy or dusty. Household garbage was deposited there every day, as were the contents of chamber pots. Refuse piled up in putrid heaps until it was finally scraped away, the stench overwhelming. Cardinal Wolsey solved the problem of horrible odors by holding a scented rose under his nose when in public. Those who could afford it sloshed heavy perfume on themselves.

Cleanliness may not be next to godliness in social success, but it far excels beauty and adornment as we witness of a Christ who cleanses!

Saturday Prayer & Praise 4/01/2023

Jeremiah Burroughs: Piercing Heaven – Puritan’s Prayers

Lord, I am hungry for righteousness—but I cannot find it. And I hope this will be my concern forever: whatever becomes of me, I will reject unrighteousness. I pray that I will not meddle with it and will have nothing to do with it. Through your mercy I hope to keep that prayer forever in my heart.

Lord, if there be but one drop of mercy in me to show pity to others, is there not an infinite ocean of mercy in you?

And Lord, you who know the secrets of all hearts, you know the desire of my soul to know your will.

Whatever help you make known to me, I am ready to make use of it, that I may not be led aside into error. And if you are pleased to reveal your mind further to me, I am ready to submit to it. I would count it greater happiness than all the comforts the world can afford simply to know your mind.

But, Lord, as yet I cannot do this thing without sinning against you. You know it. Yet you also know that I want to walk humbly and peaceably with others, in all meekness, submissiveness, and quietness of spirit.

I will wait until you further reveal your mind to me. Your light will turn my spirit the way you want it to go.

Amen.
