Ambition
Do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them (Jeremiah 45:5).
So I have made it my aim to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build on another man’s foundation (Romans 15:20).
Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself (Philippians 2:3).
In our natural life our ambitions are our own. In the Christian life we have no aim of our own, and God’s aim looks like missing the mark because we are too short-sighted to see what he is aiming at.
~ Oswald Chambers
Nothing can make a man truly great but being truly good and partaking of God’s holiness.
~ Matthew Henry
Hew not too high less the chip fall in thine eye.
~ John Heywood
Most people would succeed in small things if they were not troubled by great ambition.
~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
And he that strives to touch the stars, Oft stumbles at a straw.
~ Edmund Spenser
Personal ambition and empire building are hindering the spread of the gospel.
~ John R. W. Stott
