Psalm 106 Excerpts – A Study

I’ve stated it several times in my teaching that many things that have happened in the past in the Bible, we can find a correlation in this modern day we live, mainly because man’s nature, fallen human nature does NOT change UNLESS the Holy Spirit is voluntarily allowed in the person is surrendering to the leading, discipline and counsel of the Holy Spirit.

There are too many situations in the Bible that bears a closer look to what is happening in our world today and I am not the only one who notices it, but greater men than me, in the Lord, have brought instances out in the open.

God does NOT change and that has been established. His Character, His attributes such as holiness, righteousness and purity do NOT change even in the least. His Word, His Living and written Word do NOT change and have stood as I have said before, the test of time over literally thousands of years.

With that reminder given, as some of you know, I have been spending some time in the Psalms. I haven’t read them, other than casually for studies and such for about two years, so going through from the beginning to the end (not there yet, almost) has been an eye-opener with situations both politically and medically that have been going on in the world around us and especially the United States.

As long as the Holy Spirit points out or illuminates certain passages to me, I will share them with my Brothers and Sisters in Christ. I sincerely hope that my Brothers and Sisters study them or at the least read them, as the noble Bereans did with the Apostle Paul and Silas’ teaching. Not to find fault, but to verify that what the Scriptures say, in the light with which they are given, line up with the rest of the Word of God! (Acts 17:11).

As I was reading just yesterday Psalms 105 and 106, and as I was praying through each one, applying the writer’s pleas, praise and words to myself personally, verses in Psalm 106 truly jumped out at me. I want to share some of them in light of modern-day circumstances compared to God’s ways, as recorded through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Psalm 106

1 Praise the Lord!
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!
His faithful love endures forever.
2 Who can list the glorious miracles of the Lord?
Who can ever praise him enough?
3 There is joy for those who deal justly with others
and always do what is right.

Psalm 105 just got through describing the many miracles that God had done for His chosen people in the task of bringing them towards the promised land. The writer described the miracles wrought on Egypt allowing them eventually to finally leave with far more than they ever arrived there with. Psalm 106 continues with the theme of praise AND awe concerning the unfailing love, graciousness and longsuffering of the Lord towards His children. In verses 1-3 the psalmist is expressing the wonder and awe associated with so many miracles of the Lord and how we can never praise Him enough. Along with that thought, the psalmist shares with the joy that is associate with dealing righteously with others.

4 Remember me, Lord, when you show favor to your people;
come near and rescue me.
5 Let me share in the prosperity of your chosen ones.
Let me rejoice in the joy of your people;
let me praise you with those who are your heritage.

The thing that struck me in these verses as I was reading them was that the psalmist was sharing the joy he experienced with his brothers and sisters. Now remember, we are showing the correlations between God’s Nature with His chosen people under the Old Covenant, and God’s Nature with His chosen/adopted people under the New Covenant. In these verses, 4-5, the psalmist is identifying himself with the Lord’s people as his brothers and sisters.

“Lord, when you bless them, count me with them. When they prosper, count me with them. When they rejoice, let me be one of them rejoicing and when they praise You, let me be among them.” Today it is no different, for as Brothers and Sisters in Christ, we have a spiritual connection and a bond. We are not as the children of Israel of the same nationality, but spiritually we DO belong to the same spiritual Kingdom! We have been grafted into the family of Abraham in a spiritual sense. Therefore, these Scriptures apply to us as well.

6 Like our ancestors, we have sinned.
We have done wrong! We have acted wickedly!
7 Our ancestors in Egypt
were not impressed by the Lord’s miraculous deeds.
They soon forgot his many acts of kindness to them.
Instead, they rebelled against him at the Red Sea.
8 Even so, he saved them—
to defend the honor of his name
and to demonstrate his mighty power.
9 He commanded the Red Sea to dry up.
He led Israel across the sea as if it were a desert.
10 So he rescued them from their enemies
and redeemed them from their foes.
11 Then the water returned and covered their enemies;
not one of them survived.
12 Then his people believed his promises.
Then they sang his praise.

As I was reading these next verses, I was praying AND acknowledging to the Lord the same thing. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” – Romans 3:23. I acknowledged that I had sinned and in the eyes of God had done wickedly and at times, like the children of Israel, when I should’ve known better! It is easy to forget all that the Lord has done for His children when they are steeped in the middle of wanton sinful behavior. YET“Even so, he saved them – to defend the honor of his name and to demonstrate his mighty power.” In so doing, His children once again remember/remembered His promises to them. So it is even today. When we do sin, when we stumble, He truly IS longsuffering and will do all to bring us back to Himself. He restores our liberty to praise Him for all He does for us.

So far, we have pretty much made the parallel of the natural with the children of Israel, to the spiritual of the Lord’s modern-day children. But I want to start sharing some similarities in the natural to the natural of today. In the past, the Nation of Israel was God’s special possession, His chosen people, again, as a Nation.

In the last couple of hundred years another people cried out to God to save them from religious oppression and corrupt governments. God heard their plea because they were His spiritual children and He led THEM to a promised land. It was America, eventually to become the United States of America, proudly flying under the banner of God and His principles, adopting the slogan for their whole country, “In God We Trust.” God blessed and prospered the people of this new land as they followed His principles and ideals and as they continued to call upon Name in hope and thanksgiving. We became the most blessed and powerful nation of all the nations of the earth. God was our Lord!

13 Yet how quickly they forgot what he had done!
They wouldn’t wait for his counsel!
14 In the wilderness their desires ran wild,
testing God’s patience in that dry wasteland.
15 So he gave them what they asked for,
but he sent a plague along with it.
16 The people in the camp were jealous of Moses
and envious of Aaron, the Lord’s holy priest.
17 Because of this, the earth opened up;
it swallowed Dathan
and buried Abiram and the other rebels.
18 Fire fell upon their followers;
a flame consumed the wicked.

Comparing natural in the past with God’s chosen people, to the natural in the present with those who identified with God Almighty we see these next verses in a modern light. Forgive me as I take a few liberties in explaining my point. How quickly do a people who have received miraculous salvation from the Lord have a tendency to forget, as a people at large, what God in His unfailing love has done for them. You can go back to Psalm 105 and see the list of events, yet with all of that, they still grumbled and complained.

The children who identify God as their Father still today have a tendency to forget, to run wild and not wait or even accept the counsel of God as Father any longer. They continue to test God’s patience and longsuffering by doing what they want. Now look at verse 15: “So he gave them what they asked for, but he sent a plague along with it.”

Now I want you to think seriously about what I am about to point out. In the last decade (at the least), because of the decline and the apparent wantonness of our political leaders this nation has suffered heavily, in blessing, prosperity and even in health. The American people as a whole have been crying out to God to please, please restore us to our previous glory; please dear Lord, “make America great again!”

Our Heavenly Father has heard the cries of the Nation as a whole AND have heard the prayers of His true spiritual children. Instead of appointing another politician, in His graciousness and wisdom He gave us a businessman of the world. Someone who KNEW how to run a business and he applied those principles to this Nation and gave the Nation what they wanted. For three and a half years, we have had increased economic prosperity, the lowest unemployment in all areas of ethnicity, increased freedom to serve God the way we see fit, a leader who has chosen to even participate in prayer and honoring God for those many blessings. The people for three and a half years have been seeing what they have asked for come about. Yet there is still a faction that cannot see past the noses on their faces!

God has given the Nation, as a people, what they asked for and everyone has benefited. But three and a half years later He also allowed a plague, COVID-19, the Coronavirus, to manifest itself, and though it is as serious as some viruses in the past, it has manifest within the people of the Nation and even the world, unprecedented and needless, panic and fear! A plague.

Now I’m going to paraphrase the next verse to let you see the direct parallel and correlation and you decide in your heart whether the Bible is as applicable today as it was centuries ago.

Verse 16: “The people in the camp were jealous of President Trump and envious of Vice-President Pence, the Lord’s holy priest.” If you think this is taking too much liberty let me ask you to think of something. VP Mike Pence is a die-hard, born-again Christian who has been an inspiration to President Trump concerning trusting the Lord for wisdom and counsel. If that isn’t an appointed holy priest for the time, I don’t know what is. President Trump is the appointed leader (Daniel 2:21) to lead America back to what the children of the Nation, “Who Trust In God,” have been crying for and clamoring for. He has been a “type” of modern-day Moses leading the people to a place of prosperity and blessing; AND, it has been nothing short of miraculous what he has been able to accomplish, because, whether he truly realizes it or not, God has used him to accomplish these historic feats. However, there have been fellow Americans who have been jealous of him since the very beginning and of VP Mike Pence because of his Christian testimony. They have tried time and time again to thwart and sabotage the very things they have been trying to accomplish for the American people. There comes a time, when even God’s longsuffering and patience comes to an end and demands justice.

I will let you decide for yourselves how verses 17 and 18 may apply. I will tell you this much; as a Christian, who truly loves the Lord, I do not want to see people destroyed for eternity. I do not want to see judgement by death, but I DO, beyond any reasonable doubt want to see the blatant evil and sin judged! I CONTINUE to pray that those things that have been hidden and done in the dark will be brought to light; if not for the Nation as a whole, then for God’s true children who continue in faith to walk in the Light! God IS the ultimate Judge and He has ways of accomplishing His will that we can’t even begin to fathom.

Now I’m going to jump ahead a few verses, but feel free to read the preceding verses.

23 So he declared he would destroy them.
But Moses, his chosen one, stepped between the Lord and the people.
He begged him to turn from his anger and not destroy them.

24 The people refused to enter the pleasant land,
for they wouldn’t believe his promise to care for them.
25 Instead, they grumbled in their tents
and refused to obey the Lord.

As I stated, God does NOT change and so His patience and longsuffering must eventually give way to justice and judgement. YET – because of the prayers of not only President Trump and Vice President Pence AND the true children of the Lord in the Nation, there is a plea for the Nation. That is pretty much where we are today in the world and at this time. There are people, including appointed and righteous leaders who are praying for intercession, AGAIN, on behalf of the Nation and the people that they would return to righteousness and holiness.

But unfortunately in the midst of this very panic and fear we have leaders, and thus people, who “refuse to enter the pleasant land, for they wouldn’t believe his (God’s) promise to care for them. Instead, they grumbled in their tents and refused to obey the Lord.” I do NOT have to point specific fingers, but let’s just say almost half this Nation refuses to acknowledge blatant sin and evil for what it is. Licensed prostitution and gambling, abusing the poor with oppression, laws passed condoning homosexuality and making it a “hate crime” to even identify as sin against God. Members of the clergy who engage in the very lifestyle of homosexuality being “ordained” in mainstream churches and do these churches check with the Bible, NO, on the contrary, they refer to their church-established guidelines written over the years in their own books! We have legalized the killing of unborn infants, the very souls that our Lord in more than one place in the Bible, has stated He knew them before the foundations of the world and yet while in their mother’s wombs. (Jeremiah 1:5, Isaiah 49:1, 5, Luke 1:15, 41, Galatians 1:15-16). I could go on and on about the sins that are being condoned by laws and yet God in His unfailing love, still withholds judgement awaiting those who might still turn to Him in repentance.

28 Then our ancestors joined in the worship of Baal at Peor;
they even ate sacrifices offered to the dead!
29 They angered the Lord with all these things,
so a plague broke out among them.

I surely don’t have to exhort any more on these two verses for you can see the parallel plainly and simply here. Baal was the false god in which the children of Israel sacrificed their children too. Why can’t we learn from history? Especially when we CLAIM that we serve God and trust Him in our Nation? Is this Coronavirus God’s judgement? I truly don’t know but it follows Scripture and I can categorically state that the fear and panic is a result of God standing back and rather than interceding (at least in this moment in time) He is allowing the fear to overwhelm and confound the minds of those who rebel against Him. All you have to do is watch a press conference by some of these corrupt leaders to see the results of this.

35 Instead, they mingled among the pagans
and adopted their evil customs.
36 They worshiped their idols,
which led to their downfall.
37 They even sacrificed their sons
and their daughters to the demons.
38 They shed innocent blood,
the blood of their sons and daughters.
By sacrificing them to the idols of Canaan,
they polluted the land with murder.
39 They defiled themselves by their evil deeds,
and their love of idols was adultery in the Lord’s sight.

We were a nation of laws and that included immigration laws. We didn’t prejudice ourselves against different nationalities as long as they were willing to come to this Nation and adopt our values and lifestyles. We embraced and were blessed by the different cultures because they weren’t trying to change us from the inside; but rather they were trying to ADD to the uniqueness and diversity of this once great Nation.

Today, however, let anybody into our borders. Don’t demand that they follow the values let alone the laws of the land. In fact, it has become so rampant that certain communities are so comprised of people who want to DESTROY this Nation and what it stood for that we have elected leaders who outwardly condemn the values and principles this Nation was founded on. Yet a portion of our elected leaders tell us to welcome them with arms outstretched while they plan to destroy us from the inside, much like the once great Roman Empire. Our destiny and fate stands right before our eyes and we are without excuse because we ignore God’s Word(s).

How can anyone with even a modicum of common sense, NOT see the similarities between our Nation of today and the Nation of Israel of the past? If God did not spare judgement upon His own chosen people, how arrogant do we have to be to believe He will spare us, an adopted Nation?

43 Again and again he rescued them,
but they chose to rebel against him,
and they were finally destroyed by their sin.
44 Even so, he pitied them in their distress
and listened to their cries.
45 He remembered his covenant with them
and relented because of his unfailing love.

I ask again in the light of verses 43-45, how long to you truly believe God’s unfailing love and patience will last. The Nation of Israel suffered destruction for their sins and yet God is true to His Word AND His promises. So it is with us today for His Word and His promises do not change. However, there IS a major difference. This is where you need to study and discern the Scriptures in the light of a New Covenant. The Nation of Israel, as a nation and the Jewish people are and always will be God’s chosen special people and possession. The Nation of the United States, as a Nation, is NOT! We have been blessed as a Nation because of God’s adopted children, the true followers of Jesus Christ. The blessings that God, our Heavenly Father has poured out upon His praying and righteous people have flowed to those around us, whether Christian or not. I have stated it many times before, but where God has judged Israel and its people as a Nation, chosen and special to Him, under the Old Covenant as they follow after God they are blessed as His children.

However, under the New Covenant of Christ Jesus, we are individually God’s children whether Jew OR Gentile! We prosper and are blessed according to our intimate relationship with God, the Father, THROUGH Jesus Christ as empowered by the Holy Spirit of Christ that has been given to His children as the promise and seal of our redemption. The Holy Spirit does NOT inhabit a nation as in days of old, but rather inhabits the individual who has surrendered voluntarily to the yoke and Cross of Christ Jesus!

47 Save us, O Lord our God!
Gather us back from among the nations,
so we can thank your holy name
and rejoice and praise you.

48 Praise the Lord, the God of Israel,
who lives from everlasting to everlasting!
Let all the people say, “Amen!”
Praise the Lord!

You’ve heard it said, “As the leaders go, so goes a nation.” This is a true statement and verified time and time again by the Bible and it’s accounts of God’s Character and His relationship with His creation. The United States has many leaders and the President and Vice President can only do so much as the rest of the leaders allow and follow. Our President and Vice President need our continued prayers and support. But we NEED to understand, that God will judge ALL nations and especially a nation that claims Him to be their Guiding Light and in whom that nation trusts.

Whether judgement (of any severity) is happening now or not, it WILL happen sooner or later and the people who refuse to follow the principles of God will suffer along with the judgement of that nation. However, God’s true children need to remember one very important consideration; when we accepted Christ Jesus as Savior and were essentially spiritually born-again, we became citizen immigrants of another Kingdom; a Heavenly Kingdom. Our trust and our faith has been reborn into the values and principles of THAT Kingdom. The United States nor any other Nation remains our government other than to the degree that as foreigners and pilgrims we are indebted to that nation while we are living there.

Some of my brothers and sisters have a hard time following this principle, but it is one that must be taken by faith. It is faith in THAT Kingdom, it’s principles, values and its King of Kings to whom we owe our allegiance. In every other nation, we pray for God’s perfect will to be accomplished knowing AND believing that He has His children’s best interest at heart!

1 Response to Psalm 106 Excerpts – A Study

  1. Nancy Ruegg says:

    Even as we self-isolate, there is MUCH to thank God for (Psalm 106:1). He is still lavishing His goodness upon us–more time to spend in His Word, enjoy family, connect with others on social media, watch intently the transition of winter to spring, etc. And praise God, his love endures forever. We will NEVER be without his lovingkindness! Those opening verses of Psalm 106 are well worth focusing on these days, leading us to focus on what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable (Philippians 4:8)! (P. S.
