American Spiritual Life

As I stated in another recent post, it seems the theme the Holy Spirit has laid on my heart this week has been one on the Spiritual Life. It has been speaking to me, not just in my meditation and thoughts, but in my prayers this week as well.

With that in mind, I offer a few quotes to contemplate from some American Patriots from our past:

Without some moral and spiritual awakening, we will awaken some morning to find ourselves disappearing in the dust of an atomic explosion. — Dwight Eisenhower

The sum of the whole matter is this: If our civilization is to survive materially, it must be redeemed spiritually. — Woodrow Wilson

The life of the nation is secure only while the nation is honest, truthful, and virtuous. — Frederick Douglass

Love your country. Your country is the land where your parents sleep, where is spoken that language in which the chosen of your heart, blushing, whispered the first word of love; it is the home that God has given you that by striving to perfect yourselves therein you may prepare to ascend to him. — Giuseppe Mazzini

Some Scriptures to contemplate when praying for America:

1 Timothy 2:1-4, “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

2 Chronicles 7:13-15 “When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people, if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place.”

Proverbs 11:10-11, “When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices; And when the wicked perish, there is jubilation. By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted, But it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.”

Psalm 75:6-7, “For exaltation comes neither from the east Nor from the west nor from the south. But God is the Judge: He puts down one, And exalts another.”

Daniel 2:20-22, “Daniel answered and said: “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, For wisdom and might are His. And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise And knowledge to those who have understanding. He reveals deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness, And light dwells with Him.”

Malachi 4:5-6, “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children, And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”

America is blessed only as much as God’s children continue to walk spiritually following the leading of the Comforter and Counselor that He promised to send so as to lead and guide us. Since “He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust,” (Matthew 5:45b), let us remember that America is blessed when we follow after Him because the blessings He bestows upon His children flow to those around them!

  2. Wonderful thoughts, and yes, we need to pray for our nation. Americans have become such angry people. As you quoted from Proverbs, “By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted, But it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.” We really need to watch our mouths. We should be praying for our leaders, not speaking hatred.
